Cookbook Sample Preview...

I'm perfectly normal about this, totally calm. But I noticed on Sunday that the Dragon Age official cookbook had a preview/sample that it didn't have last time I checked. To summarize, it shows the Table of Contents and 7 new preview recipes along with 2 from an earlier sample release. It's basically previews the whole first section "Starters and Refreshments".

I will be putting things under cuts in case people don't wanna see things. From now on and after its release, the tag I will be using for the cookbook if you want to block is #tastes of thedas or #da: tot

I will also be silently combusting inside as I try not to let the excitement amp me up too much. I expect to fail this mission lol. (Spoiler I did fail and have been making my excitement everyone's problem.)

So, the cookbook sample. Amazon had a scrolling preview that wasn't as nice as the spreads so I made them into spreads like we got with the previous six recipes. You can see them here in this post.

But the following is the full spread of the sample from the cookbook. It gives us the cover, the two title pages, the table of contents, an introduction of a new character/narrator, the table of contents for the Starters and Refreshers section, and the 9 recipes within that section.

Beneath the images, I have transcribed the lore blurbs of the recipe as well as give an image description, but I didn't type out the recipes. That's for a later post (Also because it doesn't fit on this post. I hit the limit, sorry.) For a similar reason, I'm not adding my commentary to any of the recipes.

Introduction

Dear Mum,

It's me, Devon! I'm all grown up now-- or, well, more grown up than before. You always said I was too much like a child for my own good, and given the number of times you caught me daydreaming about going off on some grand adventure instead of sweeping the floors, I will grudgingly admit that you probably - probably - had a point. But guess what? I finally went on an adventure! A big one! Just like the Hero of Ferelden!

Okay, well, maybe not exactly like the Hero of Ferelden. But I did travel across Thedas! From Ferelden to Orlais, to Rivain, and even Tevinter. Plus, everything in between. It was a long journey, Mum. Weeks and weeks on the road, with the occasional bandit or beast. You'd probably have hated it, but, by Andraste, I loved every second of it! The sights! The sounds! The food.

Oh yes, the food. The reason why I set out on this journey to begin with. I know that I wasn't particularly adept in the kitchen the last time we saw each other. And, yes, I do remember that I nearly set Castle Cousland aflame with my first attempt at a stew. But I am pleased to inform you that I have been practicing extensively, and I think that, if the position still existed, I could take up your mantle as the Cousland family's cook. Granted, I doubt I would be able to fill your shoes completely; no one could manage such an impossible task. But I like to tell myself that I still would be able to make you proud.

And that takes me back to this journey and the all-important question of why. Why did I spend the last year traveling from one end of Thedas to the other, sampling whatever local cuisine I could get my hands on, even dishes that were downright strange? You're probably thinking that it's because the Hero of Ferelden ate it at some point - yes, that's certainly part of it, though I'll have you know that I tracked down foods enjoyed by the Champion of Kirkwall and the Inquisitor as well! Not to mention all their companions. But the truth is, Mum, throughout all of this, you were right there with them at the forefront of my mind. Because when I thought of ways to honor you, I kept coming back to the most important lesson you taught me: Love through food.

Every time I left your kitchen with a warm, full belly, I felt your love for me. And though I can't do the same for you anymore, I can fill this book. I can stuff it full of different recipes, dishes you've probably never even heard of, and think of you with each new entry. Because, you see, Mum, underneath all that childlike excitement, the dreams of adventure and heroism, I'm still very much your child. And I always will be.

Thank you for everything, Mum. I can't wait to share this book and the lessons that inspired it with the rest of the world.

Eggs à la Val Foret

Well, ever since I heard that Solas's bald head was once likened to an egg, I simply try to make my eggs just as round and shiny! So far, it's worked wonderfully and never ceases to put a smile on my face.

Nevarran Blood Orange Salad

Recipe Blurb: Although I knew that Divine Victoria left behind a life of wealth and privilege to join the Seekers of Truth, it wasn't until I was in Nevarra, seeing exactly what she'd given up, that I truly gained an appreciation for the path she'd chosen. The best way to describe my first glimpse of the gardens of Nevarra is that it was like seeing a painting come to life. For a long moment, I could only stand there, so dazzled by the richness and vibrancy of it all that I was half-convinced I was actually still napping in the carriage. Surely, there was no way such beauty could be found outside of a dream. And yet the beauty before me was very much real.

So, too, was the picturesque tableau that arrived later that day on a plate: perfectly cut slices of blood orange artfully arranged on a lush pillow of bitter greens. Was this a meal or a still life, I wondered. In truth, the answer was both. For Nevarrans, food is as much a feast for the eyes as for the mouth. But even if your arrangement isn't quite worthy of being displayed in a museum, this salad will sing a symphony on your tastebuds.

Fried Young Giant Spiders

Recipe Blurb: Just as people on the surface raise cows and goats, the dwarves underground raise spiders. Yes, to eat. The legs are fried and served with a sauce, which, true to dwarven fashion, is made with some type of alcohol. The precise kind depends on the establishment where you're eating your spider legs. Unfortunately, I couldn't get an exact recipe from any of the chefs I spoke to. These sauces are apparently closely guarded secrets and have spurred many a nefarious plot to acquire them-the competiontion to be crowned Orzammar's Best Sauce is fierce. But I've been assured that lichen ale is generally not used.

I've therefore come up with my own recipe, based on the many varieties I sampled while in Orzammar. Given that sourcing the requisite spider legs above ground is not nearly so easy, and the demand for such exports is minimal, I've subsituted them with crab legs. It's not a perfect match, but it's close enough to satisfy me.

Stuffed Deep Mushrooms

Recipe Blurb: Though the mushrooms growing underground in caves and in many parts of the Deep Roads are all called "deep mushrooms," there is no singular variety. In fact, there are several! Some mushrooms are squat, with broad, flat caps, while others are long and spindly, reaching toward the sky like an old man's gnarled fingers. They also have a multitude of applications, used in the creation of everything from restorative potions to deadly poisons. But in Orzammar, mushrooms are farmed for eating!

I was able to sample some of these dwarven delicacies, prized for their unique flavor and intoxicating scent. After only a few bites, I was struck with inspiration. How delicious would one of these mushrooms be when stuffed with cheese and spinach? The answer is: very. Rest assured that I selected this particular variety of deep mushroom not only for its shape, which is ideal for holding the maximum amount of cheese (and spinach), but also for the fact that it does not carry the darkspawn taint. While certain dwarves will insist that a deep mushroom's proximity to lyrium and darkspawn can only improve its flavor, I am quite content to leave that particular question a mystery, especially where lyrium is concerned. Although I'm hardly and expert on the stuff, I can't help but think about Fenris and how much suffering he endured as a result of his lyrium-infused markings. It seems to me that, barring any natural resistance, lyrium and the body are two things that probably shouldn't mix.

Rivaini Couscous Salad

Recipe Blurb: When I first encountered couscous, I mistakenly believed it to be a grain, like rice or the more familiar Fereldan barley. I was swiftly corrected. In fact, couscous is a sort of pasta, made with semolina flour and water, although it's far smaller than your typical Antivan pasta. Couscous has a very mild flavor on its own--maybe slightly nutty. But where it excels is in its ability to soak up surrounding flavors, making it a perfect base for any salad. I'd love to experiment further, but so far, this particular combination of red bell pepper and mint has proven to be incredibly pleasing.

Crab Cakes from Kirkwall

Recipe Blurb: I love it when recipes add a dash of whimsy into the mix. Food shoulf be fun. I, therefore, took it upon myself to put this into practice with a classic Kirkwall dish. After all, who hasn't looked at their crab cakes and wished they looked a little more like crabs? Okay, maybe I'm the only one who's thought this. But now that I've brought this possibility to your attention, I'm certain you're interested as well! Best of all, these extra-crabby crab cakes stay true to the original recipe's flavors, so nothig is lost--only gained!

Fluffy Mackerel Pudding

Recipe Blurb: Can it really be Feast Day without fluffy mackerel pudding? No! In fact, there's no dish I associate more strongly with the holiday than this unique combination of mackerel, onion, celery, and eggs. Granted, I've heard stories that, several decades ago, someone once attempted a diet consisting entirely of fluffy mackerel pudding. Now, that I certainly wouldn't recommend. It stops being Feast Day Fish if you eat it every day, no?

Snail & Watercress Salad

Recipe Blurb: When the Avvar can't get their hands on a gurgut or a wyvern, they turn their attention to smaller prey. Much smaller prey. Snails are found on many a hillside boulder, making them an abundant source of food for the Avvar. Now, while some would wrinkle their noses or cry out in disgust at the prospect of eating a snail, I am pleased to report that, when prepared correctly, the texture. and flavor are actually good! I could happily eat a plate full of snails dressed in butter and oil, but those still on the fence about a snail's place

Cave Beetles

Recipe Blurb: You think that, after snails, I'd balk at beetles? Never! In fact, I greatly enjoyed this dwarven dish, which involves roasting cave beetles in their shells. However, I recognize that many may not have a palate that's nearly so adventurous. If that's the case, the cave beetles can be replaced with whole prawns while keeping the rest of the recipe the same. That being said, if you do enjoy the variation with prawns, I really recommend giving the cave beetles a try. They're quite similar in both texture and flavor. If you were to blindfold yourself, I doubt you could tell the difference!

(Name) asked distressed as the security parted for the blond "he won't stop crying, ever since you left..." (Name) mumbled and let Mikey take the tiny babe and everyone looked shocked as Mikey gently scented the whining baby who immediately calmed down at the scent of his dad "have you eaten?" Mikey asked concerned and (name) nodded "have you eaten anything other than snacks?" (Name) asked, the couple ignoring the shock in the room as Mikey led the Omega up to the lounge.

The executives weren't expecting to see Mikey all clingy and holding a tiny baby with his eyes.

"Uuuh whose this?" Ran asked as he eyed the pretty omega, noting the bite mark on his neck and finally realized the bite mark on Mikey's neck.

"My mate" Mikey said simply as he adjusted the babe in his arms "it's a pleasure to meet you all" (name) mumbled softly and then it clicked for Sanzu...he had met (name) before.

Back in Toman.

Well this was unexpected.

(Name) stuck close to Mikey as the Alpha made no attempt at any more introductions so the men took it upon themselves to get answers.

"We didn't know the boss had a mate or a pup" Rindō said and (name) just sighed "Mikey likes to keep us hush hush, keep us safe" Mikey agreeing as their pup reached out to (name), no longer interested in his papa "now that you know of their existence, their safety is top priority" Mikey's tone was grave and the men nodded, Sanzu silently seething at the fact that he didn't know this vital information about his king.

Why didn't he tell him?

It sure as hell explained a lot.

"He's hungry" (name) mumbled to Mikey who nodded and the two stood up "get back to work" Mikey said cooly as he took his mate to his office so he could feed the pup with privacy.

When the Sanos left Koko was the first to speak up "Jesus fuck" his voice strained as the others nodded "you guys expect that?"

Everyone shook their head.

"How the hell did Mikey land him?" Ran asked and everyone shrugged as Sanzu felt that feeling he felt towards Mikey directed at the omega and pup, the urge to serve.

The urge to protect.

Xiao never expected to find a mate and have a pup when he visited Sumeru but god it was the best choice he ever made. He visited to see a friend who came by his in once and found the most beautiful Omega ever and seeing (name) hold their perfect little pup who was just... God he would do anything for his sweet little babe.

(Name) went with Xiao to Liyue, the couple going back to Sumeru every few months to see (name)s family and so their pup knew of his heritage.

"His ears are so big..."

"Judging by my own, they will stay that big" (name) said teasingly as little Tighnari fed contently, making little gurgles and sounds as he did so "he's going to do great things" Xiao said with certainty as the tiny fox pup pulled away and stared at his dad curiously "hello little one, I'm your dad..." And gently took his pup into his arms, little Tighnari wearing tiny robes "rest love, I will handle our pup"

Xiao wandered around the inn with his pup cuddled into the crook of his arm and made tiny little sounds as his father pretended to make conversation with him "really now? How interesting"

When it came time for his next feeding (name) was already up, the family snuggling in the nest and scenting the tiny pup who kicked happily at his parents giving him all this attention "wait till he meets his uncle..." (Name) said jokingly and Xiao looked honestly excited to introduce their pup to Zhongli.

1. how many works do you have on AO3?

Currently 72! It would be more if I posted all of my Tumblr snippets separately lol

2. what's your total AO3 word count?

467,534 words.

A decent bit, I think. Though I started writing again in 2015, so maybe it's not much? It's not everything I've written on Tumblr, either.

3. what fandoms do you write for?

I used to write for FF11 & Inu Yasha, plus Inu Yasha & Yuyu Hakusho crossover fic. I never deleted my fanfic dot net account, but it is all super old now. Nobody go looking for it! I may one day rewrite some of those old fic, but confronting my teenage writing skills is a bit much for me right now lmao.

My Ao3 is all FFXIV at this point, but that is subject to change! I have a c0mmission from Divinity: Original Sin 2 I'm currently working on! (Ifan. He's such an interesting, handsome guy. I'm having fun writing him~ ❤️)

I am interested in writing for other fandoms! For instance, Nu Carnival that is currently one of my favorite games, and possibly BG3? But I only know of it, haven't played it, I'll have to do research to write for it.

I just need to work through my current queue first!

This one! The fic where I created Ger! Another one I would like to edit to make more friendly to non-binary & they/them readers. I'd also like to update Ger's characterization, because she's an entirely different character now! But I really enjoyed writing this fic. It was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed exploring Haurchefant's character & building up the relationship between him and WoL. I had a sequel planned & everything. I'd still like to write that sequel eventually. I have a draft on my computer for it lol.

I have so many that end on positive/happy endings. I can't really say what is the happiest. Maybe fix-it fics?

8. do you get hate on fics?

Not so much on fic. I have gotten some mean/malicious anons on Tumblr, but not since my fanfiction dot net days have I gotten "flames" or somebody sending me a link to my fic being posted on "gaff" (god awful fanfiction). That was really mean lmao.

I just end up deleting hateful comments, anons, etc. Who wants to waste time on that?

Attacking or harassing real people over fiction is utterly ridiculous and I will never condone that.

9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?

Hello, so much smut!

I can write super explicit stuff that is really raunchy, or more flowery/romantic types. Fun, silly, sweet. Darker themes. I'm pretty flexible when it comes to writing smut.

10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?

I have. Probably RP? The other crossovers I've done are nowhere near as crazy as things can get in RP.

11. have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware of??

It's harder to pinpoint with writing, I think. People can have similar ideas, plots, or just enjoy similar tropes.

Unless someone is copying your work word for word, lifting scenes, or using it for A/I... (A/I images & text are theft. We want A/I to help people, not to replace human creativity with regurgitated trash that has no human soul.)

12. have you ever had a fic translated?

I think I had someone ask at one point but it was some time ago. I don't even remember what fic it was.

13. have you ever co-written a fic before?

Does RP count?

Brainstorming, bouncing ideas off one another. Or even just doing prompts & requests... I think that counts as creating together, if not actually "co-writing".

14. what's your all-time favourite ship?

I have so many!!!

For FFXIV in particular, it's probably still tied between Haurchefant/WoL and Zenos/WoL at the top. Ships with Ysayle or Foulques!! Ships with NPCs that are job class or side characters.

I am really fond of Emet/WoL, too. Tbh, any Scion ship or Ascian ship.

I love them all...

15. what's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Ones that I feel I have to edit to add to them, maybe? I just don't have the free time to do so right now.

16. what are your writing strengths?

Hmm. Research and dedication to accurate characterization??

Dialogue, I think, because I enjoy it very much, but that could also be marked in weaknesses because I struggle with certain characters. (Smart characters. Characters like Urianger who have a particular way of speaking, etc, etc.)

Setting the scene. Word counts go crazy with that.

Descriptive writing and character introspection. I can dive deep into that.

17. what are your writing weaknesses?

Definitely perfectionism. I'm never satisfied. I want every fic I write to be a home cooked meal. Michelin star.

Also run on sentences and my love affair with commas, em dashes, and semicolons.

Keeping the tenses consistent.

World building.

Overworking. (Set word count? What's that? What if 3k fic became a 6k fic became a 9k fic. Oops.)

Having time/energy to write. That's a big one. 🥲

I'm a caretaker for my disabled sister, the designated chef of my household, and just constantly busy every day. I try to squeeze in writing where I can, but some days I'm just so tired and drained that I have basically nothing to spare for my creative pursuits. It's a definite struggle to work through that.

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I like to read it! It's especially fun if it's a fantasy language like vulcan or elvish.

Unfortunately, I only speak English, and even writing in my first language can be difficult. I don't know any other languages well enough to even attempt writing in them.

19. first fandom you wrote for?

Inu Yasha, DBZ, FF11. All when I was a teenager.

Then I didn't write again for years and years. Started up again with FFXIV.

It's so incredibly interesting to see Ewan gradually taking on Alec's mannerisms on Tatooine. His dry humour, his gait, even his slight smirk and carefully neutral facial expressions are massively reminiscent of anh Obi-Wan! It's clear and heartwarming that McGregor really studied him for this role, even more than in the prequels.

But it's also so unequivocally Ewan! It's a more mature Ewan, one who's definitely lived, who knows what makes the character work. So as we're witnessing the hinge point between old and new, between Ewan and Alec, as Obi-Wan struggles to find out who he is now, we as an audience have the comfort of past and present to navigate through the show.

The dumbest thing is if they wanted to claim "realistic" then how in the hell did the other couple which were cute but the definition of puppy love end up together and get married and baekdo didn't like pick a lane, the ending reeked of edgy bittersweet ending because it's the cool thing to do, sad endings aren't synonymous with good writing, sad endings don't make a show/movie better. The fake pseudo intellectualism is hilarious, acting like they're somehow above a happy ending and writing a sad ending filled with plot holes and inconsistencies from the characters. How is it that so many people who make television just do not understand what people actually want. Also screw them for not giving us Yi Jin and what's happening to him, Hee do wasn't the only main character here so she's married and sort of content although it seems she's still kinda in love with him and regretful, what about my boy, I loved him so much and I wanted to know he was happy even if they weren't together, I wanted to see him lead a good life like wtf did these writers smoke I am so mad. Honestly in a time where real life is such absolute garbage and we seem to be heading towards annihilation, having something that is supposed to bring you comfort just devastate you and leave you angry and sad for a long time is not it and it's not just 2521 this is a trend with Korean media and western media where they try to be subversive and shock us completely missing the point. I'm tired...

For all we know, Yijin could be in space, taming lions, dead and buried, married with 16 kids.... like can we have some fucking information, please? Is he happy at all, or is he still pining for her? Does he think of her, like she thinks of him? There were so many loose ends. I hate how this ending implies that as soon as you hit 25 you can't contact your teen friends anymore and your life is over. For many people, life actually begins when they get to this age - being a teenager can be hell, and it's not always like the romanticised "youth" narrative. Who is Min-chae's dad? Who is Hee-do's husband? Why is he absent, a characteristic that made her break up with the love of her life, but she marries a man who does the same thing? Where does that lead us? Exactly where we began (but NOT different this time), which is no story at all.

I totally get your point about happy endings being this icky thing TV writers have to avoid now. At this point, it does feel condescending. It wouldn't be so bad if that was the story from the start but 2521 NEVER felt like that to me. There were hints that things don't last forever, which is standard for growing up, but it doesn't automatically mean that you have to leave EVERYTHING you loved about being that age behind. You can still have your partners and your friends, you can still go places and meet up. It's harder because you all have careers but it IS possible. They all act like they're going to die tomorrow and never see each other. I'm sorry, but that was not where you were leading with the most fantastic build up of 14 episodes. It is sad to grow up but it is NOT the end!

When the writer had Hee Do say that she and Yijin were only lovers in the good times, not the bad times, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I still don’t understand how you can misread your OWN themes and messages. Is that what you smoke? You smoke crack? Their ENTIRE relationship has been them taking turns to pull each other out of the abyss. That was how this show started - the IMF crisis hurt them in different ways and they saved each other. They support each other long distance with phone messages. They support their careers and stand up for each other when they needed it. And you are breaking up in the hour of need, something your relationship was FOUNDED on. Perseverance in dark times my ass.

I love the creative scene transitions in Business Proposal. They also add similar stuff in the scenes themselves from cgi, sound effects, and original camerawork all the way to editing, which really makes the entire experience a fun time. I love that the stereotypical drama that the characters like and is playing in the background often is used to make meta commentary that both allows you to laugh at and be invested in the actual narrative. It's like a wink wink nudge nudge, "it's ok to enjoy this" hug. It's all tropes all the way down in this town and it knows it, asking you to hop in and enjoy the ride with them. There's nothing wrong with tropes if you execute them well.

I've seen numerous people defend the 2521 finale for typical snobby reasons - "just because you didn't get what you wanted, you're upset". First off, as if kdramas aren't known for plot twists and unexpected happy endings. It's not dumb or weak for people to hope for it, especially because the tone of the show was like that throughout 13 episodes. It's not a stretch to assume that tone would continue until the end. It just wasn't able to stick the landing and drastically changed tone, pacing and characterisation, shocking everyone who followed the outline the show had already drawn out before those final episodes. It jumped from A to H to Z without much forethought and never filled in the glaring gaps. As a writer, you shouldn't punish viewers for caring, and you should never punish them for reading the writing on the wall.

Romantic relationships aside, the entire cast's adult lives are a depressing vision of a bleak future. This is in direct and startling contrast to the strength of bonds built up through hours of well crafted screenwriting, directing, acting, and so on. They don't hang out, they don't call or talk - something "realistic" adults actually do. Hee Do spends the final moments of a nostalgic, hopeful text pining away after her youth, where she was clearly happier than she is as an adult, friendless and isolated. We don't even see what happened to everyone else, so we can only assume the others do not fare much better. The threads opened for their futures (as each character had a lovely side story) are not followed through. "Realistically" (people love this word when it comes to fiction) adult life can be, and is, better than youth in different ways. The passions and ambitions you have as a teenager don't disappear when you reach a certain age - you can act on them now. So it is horrifically bleak to have them all give up and condemn themselves to suffering until they die, regretting and reliving a very short period of their long lives. While the rest of the drama did romanticise youth, it should've followed through on its established tone and romanticised adulthood as well. The core of the show itself was ambition (for careers, family, friends), hope and perseverance, and holding each other up in dark times - something it completely abandons in those final hours.

And that is why watchers are frustrated, angry, and upset, at what was one of the best television shows on air.

You know. Sometimes. When I brave the Gilmore girls tag and see the acid directed at Liz Danes. I remember. She sent jess to Luke when he was 17. Not as a newborn. Not as a toddler. 17. Her parenting might have been lacklustre in Luke , jess and everyone else’s eyes and I’m not defending her on that. But for her to send him to stars hollow at 17 and not earlier she’s imply some sincere effort on her part. And I’m willing to bet jess gave just as much as he got. Basically what I’m trying to say is. I don’t think Liz is completely at fault. And at the same time I don’t think jess is completely blameless in the situation either.

I agree. Except I’m willing to defend Liz’s parenting (somewhat) if I’m completely honest with you - because I feel like the amount of hatred she gets is extremely disproportionate to what little we learn about her efforts with Jess. Does she deserve some criticism? Yes (but so does everyone else in this show). I think lackluster was a good word choice to describe her parenting. But even though it’s not fantastic, does it really earn the tsunami of hate she gets from the fandom?

I think Liz is just the first/main person in a long line of people fans want to point their fingers at for Jess’ shortcomings. While that’s warranted to a degree, I feel like people conveniently overlook the ‘accountability vs. upbringing’ debate that should come into play here. Because - while it’s true that most issues start from childhood and can be traced back to the parenting someone’s received - most people agree that those things can’t and shouldn’t be used as an overall excuse for bad behavior. And it’s like you pointed out - Jess was SEVENTEEN. He was definitely old enough to be held accountable for his actions. He had already lived through like, 95% of his childhood by the time Liz threw in the towel and sent him away to live with Luke - so it’s clear that she didn’t just ship him off on a whim at the slightest inconvenience. She did her best for 17 years (basically alone) and then handed him over to her older brother after he had gotten out of control and she didn’t know what else to do. I think the fandom plays it up to be far more traumatic and serious than it actually is.

I’ve made a post before in Liz’s defense comparing her to Lorelai, and I still love/heavily sympathize with their contrasting parallels. If I remember right, I think they were about the same age? Which means Liz had been a teen mom too. I think watching Lorelai do such a phenomenal job against all odds makes people forget just how hard being a single teen mother would be - especially while being away from your family and everyone you used to know. It’s really not unreasonable for someone in that position to be mentally and emotionally unprepared for motherhood. Where Lorelai had Chris, who was at least willing to marry her and be a regular family, Liz was abandoned by Jess’ father the minute she gave birth. Where some people (Lorelai) are able to pick themselves up by the bootstraps and soldier on with cheery optimism, others (Liz) struggle, and feel completely overwhelmed. Where Lorelai successfully found help and a supportive community, Liz just found crappy, unreliable boyfriends. Yet Liz soldiered on in her own way anyway, throughout several difficult stages of child-rearing. She may not have made the best decisions, and developed some unhealthy coping mechanisms - but she loved her son, and did the best she could to juggle her heavy burdens. Despite battling with addictions, poor self-esteem, and having her heart broken over and over again - she managed to raise her son. And even when she did finally send him away to live with Luke - her motive sounded like it was based on Jess’ well-being and future, rather than just trying to get him out of her hair.

As far as Jess giving what he got, I’m going to be controversial and say that I think he may have given worse than he got. People act as if Jess only lashed out because his mother sent him away, when it was essentially the other way around. Look at his first real encounter with Lorelai (a woman he didn’t even know): he mocked her to her face when she tried to reassure him, and he barreled right over appropriate personal boundaries when he said “are you sleeping with him? Because you’re either naive or you’re sleeping with him”.

Like, that is GROSS. A person doesn’t just say that to someone they don’t know out of the blue - by this point, the kid had developed a pattern of saying whatever he wants to people (if he even deigns to speak to them at all). I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if his last encounter with Liz involved him saying something that cut her deeply, and that that was the reason she didn’t want him back for winter break. For goodness sake - LUKE GOT DRUNK because Jess hurt him so badly during one of their interactions. Jess has a way of jumping right to the most hurtful things to say, and IT BROKE LUKE ONCE. And Luke is the stable one in the family! So imagine Jess’ harsh way with words against his mother, who is way less stable than Luke and also probably way more sensitive.

(Of course, I’m not trying to flip the script and say that Jess should take all the blame and Liz did nothing wrong. There’s nuance to almost everything, and I think it’s only fair that the discussion surrounding Liz be nuanced as well, and not so one-sided all the time.)

When you look at Jess’ time with Luke - he was only with his uncle for a couple of years, and during that time, Luke had several periods of being run ragged and driven nuts trying to clean up his nephew’s messes and keep him straight. And after only two years - Luke kicked him out as well. Why is it okay when Luke does it, but when Liz does it - she’s considered a menace? We saw how Jess being kicked out in S3 ended up being the best thing for him, so how do we know that Liz kicking him out in S2 wasn’t actually the best thing that she could do for him at the time? I honestly think both decisions were for the best. Luke did have some good influence on him when Liz sent him his way, and Jess FINALLY gets with the program after he’s blown all of his chances with everyone and has to figure crap out on his own. Which is why I’ve said before - coddling is not what Jess needed. Tough love is what he needed, and tough love is what ended up fixing him. Someone like Jess who thinks they know everything and that they have the whole world figured out better than anyone will never learn things the easy way. It wasn’t until his smart mouth, bad attitude, and dumb decisions caught up with him that he was finally able to realize his actions have consequences - and that you can only bite the hand that feeds you so many times before that same hand turns to shoo you off their porch. I think Luke kicking him out also brought home to Jess that his mother sending him away wasn’t just one of her flighty decisions - but rather it’s his own behavior that pushes others beyond their limit.

I’ve seen some explain Jess’ pushing buttons and testing boundaries as some tragic attempt at a self-fulfilled abandonment prophecy (and I do understand and respect their reasoning on that), but personally… I don’t think that’s what it is. I think he does it in a similar way that toddlers do it - to see what they can get away with. Because at that stage, parents are supposed to train their kids with firm and consistent boundaries on what’s acceptable and what’s not - and I don’t think Jess really had much of that. I think Liz was only able to handle surface-level parenting. I think he got a lot of praise and fussing over in general, but the deeper, more substantial things were met with flighty weakness and emotional deficiency. Understandably, I think Jess grew up to resent that - since as you get older, you become more aware of the different roles your parent SHOULD fill, and you start to see where they lack. That’s why I also said in a previous post that emotionally neglected children will crave/seek out structure, stability, and discipline - because they want to know at what point you’ll actually step up, be a parent, and GUIDE THEM. I feel bad for both of them to an extent, but I feel like Jess gets an overabundance of understanding from the fandom, while Liz gets nothing but hate, and it’s very imbalanced imo. We don’t need to infantilize him. We know he has issues - and we can see where some of those issues come from - but that doesn’t give him the right to say and do whatever he wants.

I also want to address some people’s assumptions about Jess’ being physically abused. Some believe he received rough treatment from one or more of Liz’s exes, and some even imply that Liz herself might have abused Jess. I can’t speak on that with any authority of course (none of us really can, because it’s not something that’s ever brought up in canon) - but I can give my personal opinion, which is: that Jess was not physically abused.

Liz is very physically affectionate with him, and I paid special attention to his body language around her.

He doesn’t flinch, he doesn’t even recoil in disgust (and we all know how Jess has no trouble expressing disgust). At worst, he just seems to feel a little awkward, and I think that mainly comes from meeting her new boyfriend. (Also, I love that little head nuzzle. He even closes his eyes and leans into it. 🥺 They do have a bond. 💖) Her touch here is gentle and natural rather than forceful or fake. And yes, I know - in real life, abusers are known for switching between gentle/loving and harmful/violent. But Jess has the type of personality that would have zero tolerance for hypocrisy. If you ever laid a hand on him, he would never let you touch him again, and by the same token - if any of Liz’s exes had laid a hand on him and Liz had turned a blind eye to it - I think Jess would hold her responsible for that and deny her attempts to embrace him here. I honestly think that at worst, he just couldn’t rely on her to be a stable support, and he gets exasperated by/resents her flightiness. I feel strongly that the tension between them is 100% emotional, because honestly - both Jess and Liz are pretty emotional people, just in different ways. Liz’s emotions are open, exposed, and external - constantly reaching out, while Jess does his best to keep his internal and closed off, essentially hiding behind his sarcasm and rough edges. I think his frustration and disappointment in Liz’s life choices is why he guards his so closely. I think he concluded that Liz’s way of expressing emotion was the “wrong” way and that it brought them no benefits over the years. I feel like he also may have started suppressing his emotions because Liz would be so quick to fuss over him, and that’s not what he needed or was looking for when he had a problem. He needed stability. He needed reliable, long-term solutions. And unfortunately, achieving that (either for herself or for her son) was Liz’s #1 struggle. I do believe she did her best and was trying, though.

I think she loved him, cared for him, and provided for him the best way she knew how, and again - it wasn’t until she was at the end of her rope in the very last hour that she shipped him off to Luke. To LUKE - her big brother, who she looks up to and 100% trusts, the only man she could always rely on, and who she believes with her whole heart can fix anything.

Liz may be far from perfect, but I think she also deserves far more credit.

So with the posts mocking me and my thoughts in the tags I’ve decided it'd be cooler if we actually just talked instead! @laozuspo & @aemiron-main, given we’re right here and CLEARLY seeing each others posts.

Heres my opinions that are apparently super bad and under great mockery right now just for a refresher:

A) Henry was not allowed to live a normal life, he was not socially, emotionally or psychologically allowed to mature in a normal way give he was imprisoned, isolated and abused routinely since childhood. This is not something that leads to normal development of a person and will result in some awkwardness in how they interact with and navigate their surroundings. The context of this persons life, situation and resulting actions should factor somehow, like I just think that's personally worth considering in conversations about the character, particularly when we're wanting to be deep and analytical about these characters and their motives/behaviors.

B) We actually have no canon that details exactly what Henry’s connection with Will is and exactly how personally Henry has been involved in in previous seasons and literally a good 95% of what we have are fan theories and headcanons, many of which that are heavily biased and draw from some really sketchy stereotypes surrounding gay men apparently due to the headcanon that Henry is in fact a gay man. Sorry for being nuts, I guess, but thats a little suss for me and maybe its all worth thinking about. At the very least, the fact that there is so little canon conformation toward whats actually going on between Will and Henry, if anything "personal" at all, should be considered maybe. C) I thought it was kind of confirmed at this point that Henry didn’t forge a relationship with El just so he could use her for his own means. He started interacting with her because he related to her and wanted to protect her from Papa who was planning to harm her because he was IN FACT the abuser and monster which was literally broken down for us in the Papa episode... Like...??? Is Henry mad as hell that she pretty much “”killed him”” after he put his all into saving her? Yep! Thats true. Still doesn’t make him her “abuser” though. That title goes to Dr Brenner. And here's the thing-- Henry was right about it. All of it. About Papa, the other test subjects, etc. He straight up said he didn't want things to turn out the way they did, him and Eleven ending up enemies was never something he wanted. He only attacked Eleven because, if you rewatch the scene, SHE attacked him first. Do I blame her? No, she felt scared and trapped even if his intentions weren't to hurt her, but none the less after the first blow he had to view her as a danger to him just like the other test subjects. So yeah, he’s mad as hell that choosing to HELP HER ultimately lead to the fucked up position he’s in now and I think that AT LEAST makes sense.

But is that an example of the “”cycle of abuse””? Not in the context that I know the “cycle of abuse” to refer to? He’s just her enemy, but he’s not trying to cause her mental/emotional distress to control her for himself. That's what abuse means. Thats what “”abusers”” do. They either develop a close/personal “special” relationship with someone with the intention of using them for their own personal gratification or the close/personal relationship pre exists due to being a mother/father/brother/sister etc. This is different from being in conflict with someone. This is different from having a fight with someone, this is different from being cool with someone once and then winding up against them for some disagreement in views or opinions, etc. That's why not every single person you don't like / don't agree with / have conflict with / hurts you / is violent toward you or is an an asshole to you, etc, is your abuser. An “ABUSER” is a way more insidious. Like maybe I'm out of the loop as to when the "cycle of abuse" started to be used to refer to antagonist characters that do mean things and not a pattern of behaviors observed in RL domestic relationships, but as far as I've known, thats what the cycle of abuse is about and refers to. Which has very little to do with Henry and his relationships or mostly lack-thereof with any of the other characters, except maybe El and again its still quite a bit different, imo. Brenner was an abuser. He made close, special relationships with people just to use them for his own gain. That was his overarching goal. He was able to manipulate them effectively and keep them under his control almost permanently. Brenner died manipulating and gaslighting Eleven and Eleven “broke the cycle” by not giving into him. Billy was an example of the cycle of abuse, in the context it seems to be being used for here, as in, Billy is the result of abusive dynamics trickling through a family due to the actions of the abuser, (his dad) which Billy copped the brunt of and began to pass to his sister. Henry is a super pissed off vengeful, supernatural terrorist with leftists ideals on a mission of biblical proportions to destroy civilization because he views society as flawed, cruel, evil and oppressive and needs to be reset for the “greater good”, who the centrist protags have to stop. That is what canon actually put forward here. All the rest of it is FAN THEORY. And the thing is he’s right about most of his views-- his “evil” comes from the extreme he’s willing to go to, to achieve his otherwise ‘noble’ goals, including trying to kill a kid that's standing in his way and also being pretty pissed that said kid is the reason he feels he has to “”resort”” to this in the first place, per se. I mean is it good? Nah. But its not really that hard to get surely?

D) Every day this fandom is wickedly ableist toward this character; it doesn’t matter if the people making the posts in question think Henry is any type of mentally ill or ND personally, when a huge portion of these posts make fun of him specifically for traits associated with those things -- usually, especially with autism which the character is most HEAVILY coded as. You can pull back and talk about how you’re actually making fun of him because he’s “”an abuser””, but see point B) and C) as to why I can’t really get that.

Okay? I think these are pretty reasonable takes but y’all think thats all stupid and cringe and waay out of whack, alright. Lets put all that aside. Maybe, instead of mocking me and my thoughts you could give me your thoughts on some of the things I've brought up from canon that have influenced my own thoughts on Henry as a character and what has made them so contrary to your own.

Here’s my list:

What do you think the light scene in Henry's childhood means? Why is there a scene in Victor's flash back that shows Henry, a normal little dude, drawing innocently with his crayons in the living room of his new house, experiencing a really weird phenomenon that calls on things we've seen in previous seasons that always indicates SOMETHING from the upside down is trying to make contact with the right-side up?

Why did Henry, as a child, know to illustrate the mindflayer in such a way that his drawing displays the thing as being a dusty, misty black mass. There is a clear difference here in Henry's drawing of the MF and Will's drawing of it. Henry depicts it in a manner that is as true to life as a little kids drawing could be, especially using charcoal to capture the dusty/cloudy effect of it. How could he know this? Is it possible that this hints to something, putting it with the light scene?

Why did Henry's powers only become substantial when he moved to Hawkins. Why did Henry keep getting multiple psychokinetic abilities? So far, Henry is the only one we've seen who doesn't just have ONE psychic power but a MULTITUDE of them. WHAT made Henry the fucking supreme of the psychics in the ST universe and why?

Why did Henry, as a child, a literal 12 year old boy in the 1950s, somehow know and learn how to use his newly gained powers, to demonically suck the essence/souls out of his victims and why? What does he think he means when he says (the majority) if his victims are not really gone? We can agree at least that Henry wasn't born evil and he surely wasn't evil as a child, so I would think to be able to learn and KNOW to do something like this, something would have had to influence or guide him into it in some way. It seems unlikely he just came up with it entirely on his own.

Funnily enough, it also seems that something influenced Henry's views against humanity as well, something influenced little Henry to not just view spiders as cool animals he likes that he can relate to because of the unfair way they're treated by people, but to suddenly views them as LITERAL GODS. Isn't that a little weird?

We saw both the Vines and the MF existed before Henry entered the Upside Down. In particular, the vines were behaving very suss before Henry got there. In canon we at least see them trying to bust out of the UD when Eleven initially sent Henry through. They were forced to slither back inside as the portal didn't stay open for long. This shows they existed and were under the control of something before Henry at the very least.

We have the original scene of Henry's “transformation” in the script. The "vines" were suppose to have played a very active role. Immediately when Henry is thrown into the upside down he's attacked by supernatural lighting bolts and the vines which transform him into Vecna. Like, why? What was behind this? Henry didn't do that to himself, something did it to him. We've also never seen the UD behave like that toward anyone else who has entered it-- except MAYBE Will on a far lesser scale. It really seems as if the UD, or something else in the UD, was just waiting for Henry to get there. What could that mean?

This scene was changed a little in the canon, but we still have the weird ass lighting bolts that mutilated Henry. Do you know what creature's body is shown to be like huge thundercloud flashing with the same sort of lighting? The Mindflayer. We see this when Henry approaches it in the canon scene. You know what's also sitting in a pit below and around the MF in the canon scene? The vines. Further, as far as Vecna’s current form goes, it seems he is in fact merged with the vines. This occurred somehow still even if changed from the original script. Vecna does claim the MF was the means to transcend his human form, so somehow it did that. Makes it hard to believe its just some harmless energy cloud previously to Henry giving it its “shape”.

In season 3, in the scene where Possessed!Billy confronts El- which we can probably confirm this was Henry speaking through Billy- why does he switch to using plurals when talking about something else with him in the UD? If its just him and this thing is just a random, idk, energy cloud that he is using as a tool, why does he talk about it as if its more a partner in crime than an extension of himself, so to speak? Like why would he say things like "We see you" and "We've been building it" when he could just have said "I see you. I've been building it" etc, why the switch to plurals, why make it sound/seem like there is more than ONE intelligent force at work here. Could that mean something? Again put it with the other things I've mentioned here.

If this is JUST him and none of the other beings in the UD have any type of consciousness on their own, they're all just tools and extensions of Henry, why would he not just say "I'm" and "I've". The shift in pronouns happens seemingly for a reason, it seems to suggest at least one other "consciousness" working along side him.

He could be just talking about the Demos but the Demos didn't help anyone build "IT" (the spider monster proxy, which is what I think he’s talking about here). We see the MF fragment and the Vines doing that.

But we also know Vecna's involvement doesn't seem to really be a thing, PERSONALLY, until the end of S3, when he takes control over Billy, separating him from the rest of the Flayed to use as a remote vessel THOUGH it also seemed like he NEEDED the mindflayer to invade Billy in order to be able to take over Billy HIMSELF later on. Flaying Billy doesn't seem to have been done by his own power or direction alone because we also know part of the purpose of the Spider Monster was to steal power from Eleven, power that Vecna claimed he needed to open "his own" gates. This admission suggests the reason we didn't see very much of Henry and Henry didn't appear to be an explicitly active party in the Hawkins-Upside down invasion previously to s4 and somewhere in s3 is that Henry didn't have the power to act himself in any meaningful way.

It seems to suggest he could observe though the hivemind, but his actual personal impact was minor. And if he didn't have the power to involve himself personally until he stole that power from Eleven, as he seems to say himself, why do we think he’s been souly in control of everything going on? Wouldn't we have seen more of Vecna!Henry before s4? Why wouldn’t he just do what he did in s4 in the start? And why did Henry lose so much power in the first place when he was pretty powerful when he first got to the upside down- or at least during the lab massacre. Did he use it doing something in the upside down or was he just out of power after his fight with El back in the lab? It seems theres a big hunk of missing info here but I'm content to leave that all up to speculation and say I could be wrong, we’re gonna need S5 to really confirm this if this is visited again. Nevertheless, putting that particular angle aside, why do we think Dustin is suddenly wrong about his summary of Vecna being the MF's five star general when he hasn't been wrong before?

Why did Dustin previously describe the MF as an ancient malevolent entity if thats not somehow true to what it actually is? I mean, theres really not a lot of other way to describe it unless you wanna believe it really is just some... Random.. Cloud.. Thing.. that was just chilling in the UD.. For no reason? And Henry just come along and slapped a saddle on it and said yippee ki yay mother fucker, I'm off to go abuse some kids cos that makes sense and thats it? Usually, Dustin is used to dumb the plot down for people. He's not used to misdirect people or give irrelevant info.

Next we have the fact that all the characters that were used for inspo in crafting Vecna as a character have these things in common: They were all former humans who were horrifically 'transformed' into monsters and+OR they were 'contacted' by a (usually evil) "god-like" being that they chose to "serve" for some reason or another (Usually some type of coercion or trickery is involved in some shape or form.)

With Pinhead, a character claimed to be Henry's main inspo, it was his disillusionment with humanity and "god" after being traumatized by his participation on WW1 -- He is basically the lead cenobite who serves the Leviathan. So as not to stretch the post here is some info on the Levithan of the hellraiser universe that I think is very relevant and very interesting to the sneak peek of the Upside Down’s effect on Hawkins at the very end of s4.

With DnD Vecna its the Serpent, I'm repeating myself again from a billon previous posts here but I think this description sums things up: "An entity known only as the Serpent speaks directly to Vecna. Others—daring to call themselves wizards, magicians, and sorcerers—manipulate the tiniest aspects of the Serpent and call it magic. But Vecna speaks to the Serpent, and the Serpent speaks back."

The Serpent is the one who gave Vecna his powers in the DnD lore when Vecna was still a human, it is the force the guided him, essentially. Beside Vecna's "evil mother", the Serpent had a MASSIVE part in shaping Vecna into becoming the demi-god lich he becomes in the DnD lore. Another interesting something about the Serpent in the DnD lore is that in religious iconography within the DnD universe, the Serpent is depicted as a serpent made of cloud and lightning snaking down from the sky and whispering into Vecna's ear, telling him the secret of lichdom. Like? Really? This is nothing? Freddy Kurger is another big inspo, particularly for Vecna’s powers and murders, and their impact. Freddy was a human transformed into a monster by the Dream Demons (demonic nightmare entities). Even though Freddy was Evil Tm previous to his transformation, the Dream Demons gave Freddy this power because they wanted to use him as a means to merge the Dream World with the Awake World. Moreover, Freddy boosts this power by somehow capturing/consuming the souls of his victims. Hmmm? I BELIEVE the Duffer brothers straight up said Nightmare on Elm Street 3 was a huge inspiration for Vecna’s powers and the general plot of s4. Chrissy’s death was also suppose to be a direct reference to Tina’s death, where she ends up on the roof lol. We also can assume Henry might take some inspo from Henry Bowers of the IT universe because we know Stephan King’s universe has been referenced in canon multiple times. The Mindflayer, even prior to Vecna's introduction who also shares similar traits, seemed to take inspiration from IT/The deadlights.

The Deadlights were writhing, radiant orange lights that were a mysterious but very deadly and terrifying eldritch form of energy that originated from the preternatural dimension known as the Macroverse (also known as the Todash Darkness). The Deadlights are the true form of Pennywise/IT. Pennywise uses its Deadlights to break a person’s mind because one look at the Deadlights will make a person go insane due to it not being able to be comprehended by a human mind. Pennywise’s spider form, the form that he doesn’t pick from the victim’s mind, is the closest our minds can come to comprehending the deadlights without going insane. Upon looking at the Deadlights, Beverly hears sounds of children screaming, including an older person who shouted "HELP ME!!!". This implied that the Deadlights, and, to an extension, It, did not just eat their flesh and fear, but their souls as well.

IT will manipulate its prey by promising them what they want, but can also determine their psychological fears and utilize them to provoke or cow those it faces. IT has some ability to control the actions of others, most blatantly when It provokes Henry Bowers psychotic tendencies to kill his father and friends, and later acts as its agent in hunting the Losers. Even 27 years later Bowers remains submissive to It.

None of this means anything? This is all just re/misdirection? I mean, maybe I could believe that if this wasn't stuff you have to be paying KEEN attention to the character, the plot, and the OUT OF CANON homages the character pays to other characters in the horror genre to pick any of this up. Its not really something that's so explicit your average fan and watcher is gonna grab it. I clocked this shit purely because I'm an autistic weirdo who over thinks and I happen to also be a fan of a LOT of the stuff the Duffers for s4 in particular used as reference. (The thing, IT, Carrie, Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm St, Dracula, etc) Lastly, on the topic of Will. In the Piggyback episode, when we’re going back over things that have somehow related to Vecna prior to season 4 we’re shown a handful of things: such as El opening the first gate by touching the Demogorgon. This established that Brenner was actually making her look for Henry, which El didn’t know, and then we’re shown her trying to close the gates thereafter. Then we’re shown the thing with the Spider Monster proxy in S3 where Vecna says he had to get her power to open his own gates. And thats all we’re shown for “Vecnas acts.” So its curious to me that there was no showing of the MF and Will in s2 or the abduction of Will by the Demogorgon either. Maybe this is because it could be viewed as a spoiler or maybe its indicating that Henry might not have been personally involved in that as I’m suspecting along with these other things. Will is suppose to be a cleric. A wizard. Will personally depicts himself as a wizard based on his DnD character. In DnD lore a cleric gets their powers due to having some type of commune with a god/deity. Sometimes, and in a manner that is true to Will, the cleric did not choose this. The deity "chooses" the cleric. This, IMO, so far, is what links Henry and Will. Both of them are symbolized by magic and wizardry. And what Vecna of DnD has in common with the Cleric of DnD is that he was also "chosen" by a deity. This seems to reflect as well in stranger things canon because it seems more likely that Will was, for reasons currently unknown, "chosen" by the mindflayer as this deity, who also seems to heavily represent the Serpent for Henry/Vecna and “chose” him too. We literally do not know if Henry was personally behind Will's "selection." This could have even been an accident and the MF "chose" Will for some reason AFTER the abduction because we have nothing to actually canonly confirm that the Demogorgon was acting as a proxy for either Vecna OR the mindflayer, and rather wasn't just initially doing the shit Demogorgon's do based on the fact we have seen the Demogorgon's are parasitic in nature and they SEEM to implant their young into the bodies of other creatures as part of their life-cycle. This happed to Barb too, not just Will. This seemed to be the purpose behind the Demo abducting ANYONE and taking them back to the UD in the first season. We also have the fact that Will was in fact dead for a short time and we don't know why exactly the Vine decided to be in his mouth. Beside the fact we’ve seen that apparently the Vines also like to drain the life from things as shown in season 2 in the underground “feeding hub.” Its still completely unclear and NOT covered via anything canon if the vine was in Will for another reason or if it was just trying to snack on him. Fan theories are fine and all but they are literally just fan theories, not canon fact, canon could go anywhere at the moment. What we do know however is that Will, through his expereinces with the UD creatures, none of whom we can confirm were ever actually Henry personally, has forged a type of link with them all thanks to his personal and failed induction into the actual hive mind in season 2. I PERSONALLY think thats what "Wills powers" are and that hes not gonna suddenly get anymore powers beyond his weird link with the UD creatures, even if I'm not gonna rule that out completely because there is a lot to be seen yet. It is possible though, particularly going back to Nightmare on Elm St 3, since a part of the plot of that movie is that the teens that face off against Freddy manage to get “powers” in the Dream world.

OH and also... The Serpent in DnD sometimes takes the form of a dragon. Isn’t that interesting? Given Will’s painting, of the party facing off against a dragon. Like that could be a season 5 clue maybe too. As far as ACTUAL CANON goes, Will's link to Henry comes from that link with the hive mind, since Henry's also part of the hive mind. If the creatures in the hive mind are all able to share consciousness, memories, perception, etc, as needed which explains why Will is able to psychically link up to Vecna. And also explains why it seems that Will was confused to learn Vecna existed, because he had never actually knew Vecna was there before to consciously feel/search for him. (Again, It could also be because Vecna's presence was apparently somehow radically diminished for some unknown reason until he was able to absorb some of Eleven’s power through the Mf/Spider proxy in s3 which is suggested) It also might explain why Vecna seems oblivious to Will, because this link between them isn't EXACTLY personal and it has occurred entirely through a third party, though the hive mind. Though again! Theres a lot here that could be expanded on and explored so I prefer not to speculate on where that is going TOO much just yet. That being said, I really cannot see Henry being confirmed for a p*do child abuser in s5. Its almost incomprehensible to me that this is an outcome some people in this fandom genuinely want and think is the most logical take. Like, I really can't see that being an accurate read, particularly not with the way Jamie, the Duffers and even Noah speak of Vecna. (Which seems to be more fondly than anything? As far as I’ve seen). Idk, I feel the fact they all seem to like the character is also some sort of clue here but if y’all really think and REALLY want that to be the outcome then... Ok? Each to their own I suppose but we really don't know yet and can’t confirm anything so acting like this is true irrefutable canon rn is bizarre and slightly unfair for fans of the character- which is my point and I’ll stick to idea that my latest obviously autistic “”queer coded”” fav isn't a depraved gay p*dophile stereotype until I’m shown otherwise in s5. But YEAH, that aside, what are your thoughts here. Sure its possible that this is all like, intended to be inverted in Vecna, but I'd like to hear what y'all think about it anyway because there is just as likely a possibility that all of this is played straight and not inverted at all. And if you guys choose NOT to engage with this post because I'm just a delusional cringe fail apologist or whatever ok, cool, but I thought I'd ask anyway because I'm seriously interested in what you make of all the stuff I’ve talked about that shaped my opinions at this point cos I’ve never seen either of you mention any of it in anything before.
