A hawk followed me for awhile, screeching, within 10 ft of me, for about 5 minutes. Saw numerous toads, frogs, dragonflies.

When I walked onto the trail from the bus stop, I almost stepped on a garter snake!

The mosquitoes could hold their own in a sword fight with a hummingbird.

I whittled a tent peg!

I fixed the janky mesh on that tree root across the path; it was all gnarled up so I spread it out flat and re-attached it to the rest.

I was only outside for 2 hours; it was too hot to stay out longer in jeans. But this is my first foray into practicing knife skills and observing the woods. The ambulance sirens were unsettlingly loud and distracting, the golf course across the river made all voices carry really well, so I'm looking forward to visiting a place with fewer other people nearby soon.

After today's excursion into some woods, I wrote some notes on the experience for myself to read later on. I'm trying to record my journey...

And today was not as comfy as I'd hoped it would be. The fact that I could hear people playing golf and also biking the paved trail across the river, they could all see me, the ambulance sirens, the random houseless person to the left side of the initial trail I entered by the river.. all of that underlined the fact that I was still in a city, and the experience that I'm building up to is to not be in the city, not be surrounded by people.

So it was uncomfortable, not just in the 'I'm wearing jeans and it's 30° C' way, but I also didn't feel free to do the things I went out for. Namely, to find quiet spot to eat, scope out firewood, a place to build a camp. I was constantly expecting to meet someone else on the trail, or to have the police show up and ask me what I was doing there or something. Also the mosquitoes were immense.

I picked up a bunch of garbage on the way in and out, and the place that I stopped to drink some water and decide I was going to turn back around was a nice clearing that led to multiple trails, except that somebody had left a beer can and their underwear and a tank top on a log. Next time I go out I'll find a different section of woods, hopefully quieter and I can feel a bit more free to practice there.

In the meantime I'm going to use my knife to continue carving my walking stick that I started carving with the wrong tools like 6 years ago, get more familiar with it, and learning to sharpen it.
