i rly do think there is a line between being critical of saudi, their involvement in football, where all the money is coming from, the millions of human rights violations that the government perpetuates and covers up via sportwashing … and then just straight up dunking on football cultures outside of europe (specifically england/germany/italy) and acting like the fans there are inferior in some way (even if they are smaller in number that does not mean that the football being played is worth any less) and implying consciously or subconsciously that the footballers who grew up in the system there don’t deserve to play football. i’ll be honest, way too many ppl cross the line.

Current Events in Silm fandom rlly reinforce my feeling that, despite claiming an ethos of acceptance/tolerance of anything that doesn't hurt ppl, a lot of ppl in the section of Silm fandom I frequent do follow a set of socially-agreed-upon mores about what concepts are "not acceptable" to discuss or propose (or the ways in which certain topics must be discussed to be acceptable), that you all seem to have agreed on despite the things those mores restrict not being harmful to anyone.
And when someone does say smth that violates those mores, the response is disproportionate to the amount of harm done (which is typically none, imo). I know it's tempting to say "but we just want people to be comfortable and safe", but treating ppl badly for the sin of sharing thoughts you dislike is NOT the same as preventing people from doing things that are harmful. The former is much more of a harmful behavior than the sharing of the thoughts that sets it off. Fannish etiquette, people: you shouldn’t act like someone’s meta makes them morally suspect just because you disagree with it; save the “this is morally bad” for things that are ACTUALLY harmful. We're all stuck on this website together & if you want to have any sort of community, you need to ACT like you're in a community, and that means letting other people say things you dislike. Block them if you need to! I block people all the time because i know it's better for me AND for them if we can both blog in peace.
I am not particularly comfortable with the young-queer-on-tumblr silm fandom rn due to this tendency to rebuke things that are uncomfortable rather than harmful. Maybe that's fine with you. But if your goal is to make all fans feel comfortable and accepted, you need to actually do that. If your goal is to make people who share your unwritten rules comfortable in your space, you need to admit that, and write those rules down, and curate your space so it follows them.
Edited 8:10am PST to clarify the specifics of the behavior I find concerning.

hey. if you ever decide to put on a show as background noise for when you're working you should make sure it doesn't have Themes and Motifs that will sneak up on you and leave you questioning what the fuck you just watched and what time is it because apparently you binged the whole show and a movie when you were supposed to be editing your paper

Generational trauma is weird sometimes.
Like, I have never in my life seen let alone experienced a tornado. But both of my parents lived through a nasty one, and so now any time we get so much as a watch, I've got leashes and collars on the dogs and my bag strapped on with my ID and sturdy shoes (even if I'm otherwise still in my pj's) and my water bottle refilled and I am READY. All because I grew up on the story of my mom having to walk barefoot to the red cross station after her house got blown away around her.
Anyway, this comes up now because last week was the 50th anniversary of the inciting event, as it were, and my mom actually told her story straight for once instead of roundabouting it.
Pictures/info/TLDR version of the stories below in case you were curious.
Clocked in at half-mile wide. Multiple vortices. Wind speeds estimated between 250-305mph. 32 killed (plus two firefighters due to a subsequent fire) and 1,150 injured.
On the ground for 39 minutes, traveling about 32 miles. Downtown Xenia pictured at center, Arrowhead subdivision on the far left at point of touchdown.
The Arrowhead subdivision was the first hit - my mother's neighborhood. All that was left of her house was the hallway she was sheltering in with her younger brothers, and the closet where she'd stashed the family cat. They were home alone at the time. She was 14.
Image of the damage in downtown Xenia, where my dad was. He survived thanks to a passing couple who dragged him off his bike and to the nearest cover - the stairwell of an elementary school. It was partially destroyed, and he almost lost a finger to a flying brick, but he lived to tell about it. He was 16.

Bunny and I went to Sharks practice yesterday and I brought a film camera to take photos which was VERY disturbing to the zoo animals, but I'm hopeful at least one of the 12 photos I took of David Quinn yelling comes out well. I used to do a ton of film photography in high school but this was pre-Youtube, pre-smartphone, and pre-adult income so it was a lot of trial and error via Walgreens, and then I went to college and someone gave me a digital camera, so I just stopped doing it entirely. But I need a hobby that doesn't involve fanfiction in any way, so my mom and I dug up my dad's old film camera. I trialed it on some Sharks and some Cudas and some plants in the backyard today and took it to the most hole in the wall film developer I've ever encountered. I'm very curious how they will turn out. I figured I should get one roll out from under my belt just to adjust to how the camera works again. It's been interesting trying to remember how to frame photos on an SLR after over a decade of using a smartphone almost exclusively for photography. Like retraining my creative eye.
Unfortunately jokes on me because while Bunny and I were observing a very sparse optional practice for the Cuda, I caught a very tender moment between Akim Aliu and perma-injured housewife Anthony Vincent, so if that one single shot does turn out, I will be acting up.
