“Yuuri, make me breakfast,” Viktor whined, his belabored trot slowing as he reached the gate to Hasetsu’s Yu-Topia.

The morning’s first rose-colored sunbeams were just peeking over the hills. Yuuri, already waiting at the gate, puffed an exhausted laugh.

“You are going to have to keep up if you want to work off that off-season tummy,” he teased. “You have to look your best for your final season.” He pulled Viktor close and patted him gently on the stomach. Viktor smiled and kissed him lightly on the cheek.

“I thought this was supposed to be a vacation.”

The two were just in time to watch the sun rise while their aching muscles soaked in the steamy onsen. This was the first time they had managed to finish their run in enough time, with only two days left before they had to return to St. Petersburg to train.

Viktor slipped slowly into the bath and seemed to melt in the warm, relaxing waters. He sank down and rested his head on his arms right next to where Yuuri sat huddled over a steaming cup of tea. They watched the rest of the sunrise together in silence. Yuuri had brought home plenty of gold medals last season, and he was beyond grateful to even share the podium with Viktor once. For the first time, they had worked together to strengthen one another and had the pleasure of watching each other succeed and grow. The tension of competing was exhilarating both on and off the ice.

All the same, Viktor’s body was beginning to show signs of strain. He would never admit it, but Yuuri was sure he knew. He could not help but feel worried at what this season would bring for Viktor. He was thrilled to continue skating together, but he would feel at fault if his love felt even the slightest disappointment in himself, or worse, if he was injured. Viktor’s standards and expectations for his own skating had skyrocketed ever since his two students had beaten his record. The wins he had once cinched easily had become a challenge once again.

Yuuri gazed over at his husband’s willowy frame. He was leaning against the wall of the pool, eyes turned skyward, lost in thought. His fingers twirled that silver hair of their own accord.

Yuuri was so in love.

It had only been two years since Viktor first greeted him here on a snowy April morning. How much had changed. It really did feel like home. Him. Here. The onsen—not just the spring itself, but the entire resort—seemed to calm Viktor immensely. It was here that his head was clearest, his features brightest. Yuuri had wanted to come now, right before training, for that reason. The last thing they needed was a stressful start.

A half an hour later, as the two men changed into their clothes, a startling gasp shook Yuuri out of his pleasant honeymoon daze.

“Божья матерь…”

Viktor thrust his phone in Yuuri’s direction, his eyes wide and worried.

It took a few moments for Yuuri to understand what he was seeing.

On the little screen in his hand, a gruesome image hung in disturbing resolution beneath an international news banner. Smoke and flashing lights masked most of the wreckage, but one thing was recognizable in the midst of everything: a motorcycle.

No, no no no, this couldn’t happen now.

Nonnie, I think more than half of YOI fics out there are domestic established relationship because that = post-series Victuuri, lbr. So boy do I have so many rec (put a limit of one fic per author tho. And also tried not to include fics I've already recced but you should check out the masterlist). I'm sure I still missed a lot of great fics so other recs are welcome!

A laundry list of to-do was rattled off rapidfire as Yuuri sipped at his lukewarm herbal tea. If he’d wanted, he could have tossed it on the floor, demanded a freshly-made cup that was hotter, verbally abuse whoever had allowed his drink to go cold. He sort of wanted to, somewhere in his mind. Somewhere underneath the ‘Thank you, no thank you’ and the ‘decency and dignity’ and the calculated nods and gestures, Yuuri was beginning to crack.

Blogiversary!!!

So....this blog started one year ago today. And almost immediately took off in a way I really wasn’t expecting. It was kind of wild. Since then, I’ve found a blog-partner and friend in my sweet Elf, written more myself, basically abandoned my personal blog and moved to Twitter, started a Discord channel (if you aren’t already, come join us and chat about fic and YOI! https://discord.gg/TkDPQqc), and answered almost five hundred of your fic rec asks and had nearly 1k of you follow us! It has been truly a wild ride, and I’m really grateful that mostly the community built around this blog has been wonderful and supportive and full of great fic recommendations! I’m even more grateful to the Fic Rec Elf, @jfmesq, without whom I would never have made such a success with this blog! Thank you so much my dear, you are the best Elfling a Fairy could ever have!

As a little Blog Birthday gift, Elf and I are going to do a “Head Shoulders Knees and Toes” rec list like someone suggested, because it sounded cute. We’re going to try to do as many entirely new fics as we can, one fic to each category! Mine are below, and the Elf’s will be coming as soon as her internet stops acting up!

So, to start us off!

Head

The Ties That Bind Us by @topcatnikki (complete, 69k words, Rated E) is an unusual soulmate AU. I spent a long time not reading this because I thought it was a post-apocalyptic AU, but the Cataclysm referenced in the description is far more personal. This fic is phenomenal, and it deals with a lot of what is going on in Victor and Yuuri’s heads with anxiety and depression. It’s incredibly sweet and I loved the premise. Definitely check it out.

Shoulders

I had a lot of trouble picking this fic. The other categories are fairly obvious, but I couldn’t decide what aspect of “shoulders” to focus on until I went back to the original suggestion of “responsibility” and it suddenly hit me! The perfect fic for this, which is the only ongoing rec on this list, is You Ruined Everything (In The Nicest Way) by SnarkyBreeze (WIP, 10/15 chapters, rated T). Snarky is updating regularly, and I have been loving this fic. It’s a little of everything good, Trans!Yuuri, slow-burn Victuuri, Phichit being the best friend, and of course an adorable baby! Yuuri definitely tries to put everything on his own shoulders in this fic, but he seems to be learning to let others shoulder burdens too. It’s super sweet!

Knees

Ok, I could have gone with all sorts of smutty kneeling fics, and I certainly have those, but I’m a smart-ass so I had to go with Out of an entire kingdom he kneels only to me by @thehobbem (complete, 5k words, Rated T) which is an entirely NON smutty Hades/Persephone AU. Hob is a fabulous writer and this is a great little AU, super cute and fluffy.

Toes

So, I actually have recced Heels Over Head by @amarokster (complete, 33.6k words, Rated E) before once or twice. But, look, in a fandom full of foot-fetishists validated by canon, there’s a lot to choose from here. And out of all of them, this one is probably my favorite. It’s just so silly and serious and adorable and hilarious! I just, love the idea of Victor slowly developing an obsession with Yuuri’s feet and ankles!

I lost my job as a church organist this week after I came out as bisexual and transgender. It was an important move for me at the time, as anti-lgbt language was being added to the church’s by-laws.

I thought I would be met with compassion and openness, but instead I was told I was loved and accepted “in spite of my sins.” I could remain the organist, but I could not continue to be a member.

My income from this church wasn’t spectacular, but it got me through to the next paycheck every week.

Every little bit counts.

But danger looms on the horizon, as it always does for someone in his line of work. So when he gets the chance to answer the call, he does, even if it implies crossing the milky way in a tiny spaceship with Victor Nikiforov —the man Yuuri has been pining after since they met— by his side.

Looking at the picture in the newspaper, the superhero is carrying Victor in the most cliché way they could ever find themselves in: a bridal carry. It has become an iconic photo and the city just ran with it. Everyone loves a good love story, even if it’s not entirely true.

E, 38k, Complete. AU - Crime and police, soulmates. It was his first job as detective; hunting down the ever elusive Mercury, a thief who got his kicks from simply getting away with the crime. Yuuri had gotten close. Really close. And then he noticed the mark of the soulmate bond on his hand.

M, 1/?, WIP. AU - Just like Heaven AU, apparent MCD. Yuuri has a traumatic fall, and he's absent from the rest of the series. After Victor's fifth straight title at Worlds he feels strangely despondent, so he decides to leave St. Petersburg. The first night in his new apartment, he's haunted by the ghost of a beautiful Japanese man he's never met before.

A sword, slightly curved to the back, red, and clearly made of blood is emerging from the youmu’s front. He knows who that kind of power belongs to, but he can’t bring himself to believe.

Viktor doesn't take Yuuri up on his offer at the Sochi banquet, but someone else does. Depersonalized, depressed, and doubting that he'll make it through another season of marketing himself to an uncaring public, Viktor finds himself ill at Worlds, and nothing he does seems to help. When Yakov takes on a new skater, Viktor's health takes a turn for the worse and he's suddenly faced with a dire choice.
