I just remembered when the pandemic started and we had to start online classes one of my class lessons showed these Smokey bear ads and one of em was Smokey approaching some family I don't remember much but
For some reason Smokey had something going on with the dad?

okay smokey bear! basically i saw non- americans having questions about this little guy on the poll and thought why not.
so he is the mascot for the US forest service for their campaign about wildfire prevention! the campaign was conceived in the early 40s as a result in a fire started in los padres national forest due to fallout from ww2 and the realization that there was a lack of firemen due to the draft, so the general public needed to do their part in protecting forests. the original animal mascots were characters from Bambi (1942) and were such a success that the campaign decided to create their own (as well as only having the bambi character rights for a year). and a bear just, made sense!
and then! in 1950 during a forest fire in new mexico a crew of firefighters rescued a bear cub that was severely injured and he was dubbed smokey, he became a national news story and the public fell in love with him.
smokey the bear continues to be a public service figure, and he has an attitude which i find hilarious but guilting works 🤷🏻
have an evolution of posters
you can find more and radio and video clips here. personally i do not like the current iteration of the depiction but i don’t work for the ad council🙄😤
anyway, it is my favorite propaganda campaign because a) cute sassy bear and b) actually a good cause. it is the longest running public service advertising campaign and will be turning 80 next year!
and remember…only you can prevent wildfires.
