So, I went back and rewatched Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World (at the same time). Heres the thoughts:
I watched Girl Meets World before (when it came out in like middle school/high school; I’m in college now so it’s been a while) and since I’m a Boy Meets World fan I thought I would go back and rewatch it.
Boy Meets World is amazing. The storylines, the characters, everything else; I will always love that show and I often rewatch it.
Girl Meets World is 95% hot fucking garbage. Like I get it’s a Disney channel show- it’s not going to be the greatest thing ever- but good god this is a mess. The writers didn’t really get to tell the story they wanted because of Disney, at least I hope that’s what happened instead of actually thinking that this would be on the same level as Boy Meets World.
—————-
The 5% of the show I enjoyed was:
- Eric’s episodes
- Eric and Tommy’s reunion
- Eric and Jack’s reunion
- Seeing more of Cory and Topanga’s relationship
- Some of Shawn’s episodes
- Some of Farkle, Smackle, or Maya’s scenes (definitely not a lot of them though)
- Stuart Minkus’ appearances (and Jennifer too)
- Feeny and the other original characters making cameos too
———-
The rest of Girl Meets World I kinda hated.
For example:
- they did Angela dirty (like, wtf? They acted like she wasn’t close friends with Cory, Topanga, and the other characters before she left in Boy Meets World; it seemed like they made some of the characters mad at her (Riley) for no reason at all, she did nothing wrong in my opinion. And I would have loved to see more of her, like as an Aunt to Riley and Auggie or something)
- they did Jack dirty too (he would’ve definitely stayed in contact with at least Eric and Shawn, being as close as they were on Boy Meets World. And why wasn’t he at Shawn’s wedding? Also, we should’ve seen more of him after the semi formal episode, and jeric should have happened)
- no Rachel appearances (I would have loved to see her again, and she did stay in contact with Eric, as mentioned in the show, so she could’ve come back)
- the annoying ass Riley, Maya, Lucas love triangle
- the fact that they still didn’t make jeric happen (I need them to happen. They would be so cute! Just look at them:⬇️)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
- Mr Turner not having more scenes (I hated that he wasn’t at Shawn’s wedding- like we knew he was in NYC, he could’ve been there- and that he wasn’t in more scenes, especially ones with Shawn)
- the whole “Maya is turning into Riley and they have to stop it” arc. (It was- like the love triangle- annoying, long, and unnecessary. And people do change in high school- and often do a full 180 to their personality; I know I did, and on the Boy Meets World universe Harley Kenner did too. I didn’t even notice the change until it was outright said on the show, and I think the characters discouraging this was just wrong. Yes, Maya did change a lot throughout the show, but that is good. It shows growth, it shows a character arc, that her life is getting brighter and she has more hope, and I still saw Maya as the same character at that point. Anyway, I think that this whole arc was just bad, but I think that Maya still was a good character- she was just poorly written sometimes)
And let’s not forget the two biggest reasons I hate this sequel:
- Joshaya (that relationship was creepy as hell now that I’ve watched the show as an adult, in middle school I didn’t really see why people disliked it, but now I get it. I mean at the end of the series Josh is a FRESHMAN IN COLLEGE (around 18) and Maya is a FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL (around 14 or 15), them doing what they do on the show is illegal. And Josh saying that he’ll “play the long game” too and wait for her? Ew. Just ew. That makes it so much worse; it implies that he’s waiting until she’s 18 or in college and that’s just disturbing and disgusting for a Disney channel show and in general. Overall: Joshaya is gross and illegal and should’ve never been a thing and other characters should not have encouraged it on the show)
- “Girl Meets Farkle” (the infamous autism focused episode. I loved the fact that it had representation for autism, but I hated the way this episode was handled and written. This was by far the worst part of the show for me. I hated the way that some of the characters (Riley, Maya, Lucas) reacted when Farkle said he might be autistic. They acted like it was some horrible thing to be autistic, (which- as a human being and recently diagnosed person with autism- I found offensive) seriously they acted like autism was going to kill him (I’m not joking, that’s how they reacted) and they even went as far as to make Farkle mask who he was in one scene when Farkle said that he identified with some signs of autism. Like, all he wanted was support from his friends when he was getting tested and figuring things out, and all he got was hate from them. And I hate that other characters (and the writers of the show) didn’t see this too and change things or put a stop to it. They also used some outdated language to describe the spectrum on the show, which didn’t help things at all. For a lot of people and viewers, this was the first time they really learned about or saw anything about the spectrum and autism and this is just a horrible way to learn about this. Additionally, I loved Smackle’s whole story and telling how she got diagnosed, but I hated how some characters (Riley and sometimes Maya) treated her throughout the show. As an example: Smackle, as shown in the series, doesn’t often like hugs or physical contact (like me sometimes) and she makes it known, but Riley still fucking tries to hug her constantly and it’s so irritating! I know that if I was having a moment like that, as I often do, and someone tried to hug me like that I would be very uncomfortable and upset, so this whole thing they do with those interactions on the show just pisses me off. Overall: this episode of the show was offensive and horrifying, mostly because of the way the show frames autism and the way that the other characters react to Farkle and his potential diagnosis and Smackle with her actual diagnosis.
—————
In conclusion to my long ass rant:

Double Date
Summary: It was just a double date. How bad could it be?
Read on ao3 | ff.net
“Do you think they’re still waiting for us?” Isadora Smackle asked as they walked briskly to the restaurant they should have been at ten minutes ago.
“We’re only a few minutes behind.” Maya tried to keep the guilt out of her voice, and hoped she didn’t sound exasperated instead. “They’re not going to leave just because we didn’t turn up on the dot. We’re not standing them up. And that’s if they’re even there already in the first place.”
“We would’ve been here on time if you hadn’t been late,” Smackle pointed out in her usual blunt manner, her heels clicking in time with Maya’s.
“I’m sorry! You know I didn’t do it on purpose, Smacks. I took a nap and overslept.”
Which wasn’t exactly the truth. Oversleeping on an afternoon nap implied she’d been awake the whole morning before taking the nap, when in reality, she’d gone to bed sometime around 7.00 am and, completely worn out, had slept like the dead until the evening. And remembering the reason she’d been up the whole night before, well past dawn, had colour rising to her cheeks. Fortunately Smackle didn’t notice, preoccupied as she was with their upcoming double date.
A double date Maya honestly had no interest in anymore.
When Isadora had first asked her to come along with her, Zay, and whichever friend he brought, Maya hadn’t needed much persuasion.
For one, she was aware that her friend didn’t have much experience with dating, having had only one boyfriend throughout her high school years. Smackle had explained how Farkle Minkus was as much a nerd as her, and that they had dated mainly because they were intellectual equals (arch nemeses before becoming arch lovesis-es), ambitious, and had found each other “aesthetically pleasing”.
Maya wasn’t exactly an expert in the dating department herself — her only serious relationship had ended up bombing spectacularly at the end of her first year of college, and her ex-boyfriend had turned out to be a complete douche, despite being related to her best friend and actual angel Riley Matthews. Josh was the reason she had sworn off relationships and stuck to one night stands.
But Smackle had also told Maya how her Asperger Syndrome made it difficult for her to understand emotions, which was why she wanted Maya to be there on her first date with the guy she’d been texting for a while now and had decided she really liked. Maya was definitely better at reading people than Smackle.
For another, Maya was sort of acquainted with Zay, a drama and theatre major who was heavily involved with the college dance scene. She knew he was a funny, brash, outgoing chatterbox who seemed to be the exact opposite of the studious, overachieving, and somewhat socially clueless Smackle. And since she liked both of them, she’d been curious to see how they would work out.
She hadn’t given much thought to her counterpart on this double date. If he was attractive or appealing in any way, it would be a bonus. If he wasn’t, well she knew Zay enough to know that he wouldn’t ignore her and let her be bored, especially as she was his date’s closest friend. She was doing this pretty much exclusively for Smackle.
Now, however, the last thing she wanted to do was make awkward small talk with a stranger while Smackle and Zay flirted right next to her, when all she could think about was the guy she’d spent the previous night with, and what she was pretty sure had been the best sex of her life.
When she’d left his place that morning, Hot Guy (she’d asked that they not exchange names, and after a brief moment of hesitation and reluctance, he’d agreed) had still been fast asleep, sprawled stomach down and stark naked on the bed, his hair completely mussed from her hands, and his muscled back sporting the marks of her nails. And for the first time in the history of her sex life, Maya had questioned her strict no-repeat policy on one-night stands.
She wouldn’t mind a repeat of last night. Hell, she wouldn’t mind several repeats. Even after sleeping the whole day, her body still felt gloriously achey, with muscles she didn’t even know she had all pleasantly stretched.
On top of that, Hot Guy had been genuinely interesting, funny and sexy in a dorky way, capable of making engaging conversation, and probably the first person ever who’d been able to keep up with the sarcasm, banter and teasing that was Maya’s usual form of flirting. She couldn’t remember an evening she’d enjoyed more, especially with an unknown college guy she’d bumped into at the bar. It was a shame that she’d probably never see him again.
But then, Maya reminded herself, she had excellent reasons to avoid any and all romantic entanglements. She liked her life fine the way it was, where she could focus on college, art, friends, and the freelance assignments and commissions she’d recently started getting for her work. She didn’t have the time to complicate it by adding more people to it.
Mentally sighing, she resigned herself to the fact that Hot Guy would just be a lovely, satisfying memory (pun very much intended, she thought with a rueful smile) that she could look back on in the future. Meanwhile, there were other things she had to focus on right now. Like Isadora’s potential love life.
They reached the restaurant and both girls paused outside.
“I’m not mad at you, you know.” Smackle said, wringing her hands. “I’m just—” She broke off to gesture to the door, the nervousness unmistakeable on her face. It wasn’t a sentiment the normally confident young woman was familiar with. Until now.
“Oh, I know, honey.” Maya pulled her friend into a side hug. “It’ll be fine, you’ll see. Zay’s a great guy, mostly. And if you decide you’re not interested in him after all, we’ll go back to my place, break open that bottle of fancy French wine that Shawn got me, and binge watch the latest season of Doctor Who.”
That earned her a laugh from Smackle, and made her feel much better. Enough ruminating about something she had no control over, she told herself as they pushed open the doors to the noisy, Saturday-night-crowd filled restaurant. It was just a double date. She could do this. How bad could it be?
She saw Zay, seated at one of the booths in the corner. His face lit up when he spotted them, and he raised a hand to wave them over. Maya followed a grinning Smackle as they wound their way through the tables. And came to an abrupt halt about ten feet away from the booth when the broad-shouldered man sitting opposite Zay, with his back to them, turned to face them and goggled when he saw her.
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.
“Isadora,” Zay stood up, beaming. The relief on his face was palpable. “You came.”
“Hi, Zay.” Smackle beamed right back. “Sorry we’re a little late.” She stepped a little to the side. “You know Maya.”
“Of course! Hey Maya, good to see you.”
“Yeah, you too,” she muttered weakly.
Zay turned to his friend at the table. “Isadora, Maya, this is Lucas Friar. Lucas, meet Isadora Smackle and Maya Hart.”
Maya could actually feel the colour surging up to fill her face. Not for the first time, in some vague corner of her mind that wasn’t drowning in embarrassment, she cursed her pale skin. Her cheeks were probably as red as cooked lobster.
The guy at the table — Hot Guy, (no, not Hot Guy, he had a name now, Lucas), because, of course, who else would it be? — was still gawking at her as he got to his feet. His face was crimson, and he looked exactly how she felt: a mix of panic, bafflement, hope, and lust (she recognized that look in his eyes pretty easily).
And since neither Zay nor Isadora were blind, they were currently looking back and forth from him to her, puzzled.
“Hi,” Hot Guy — Lucas — croaked. He sounded utterly mortified.
Against all expectations, that steadied Maya a bit, enough to see the hilarity of the situation.
Hadn’t she been feeling sorry just a few minutes ago that she’d never see him again? And now here he was, handed to her on a platter, his hair still adorably mussed like last night and looking just as delectable. If she was looking for a sign, then she had just walked face first into it.
She stood up straighter and aimed a sultry smile at him. “Hi,” she purred, suppressing a smirk of smug satisfaction when his eyes widened and his ears went bright red to match his face. This was going to be so much fun.

okay babe, i didn’t give you grass, but i did give you (fingers waggle) so much more.
ao3.
“C’mon, dude, it’s cold.”
“Lucas, stop being a fucking wimp,” Maya sighs from her place beside him on the trampoline. “If you’re gonna keep bitching and moaning, go back inside and measure your dick to Farkle’s again or something else equally stupid.”
“We’ve never done that!”
“Sure you haven’t. Or better yet, go make us some pasta. We’re hungry, aren’t we Riles?”
“Mmm.” Riley only snuggles closer into Maya, burying her head even further into the warmth of her skin.
“Whatever. Farkle’s right, we’re just getting eaten alive by mosquitos out here and will probably get frostbite.”
“Lucas, it’s April in Upstate New York. It’s like 45 degrees out. We’re not gonna get fucking frostbite.” Maya snorts when she turns her head to find Lucas laying next to her, arms crossed with his hands shoved underneath his armpits in an attempt to keep them warm, back rigid. “What, a li’l Texas boy like yerself can’t handle the fearsome outdoors?”
“Yeah, Lucas,” Riley giggles, voice muffled by Maya’s skin. “What’s a country boy t’do?” The accent she uses is significantly worse than Maya’s, but it makes Lucas and Maya smile anyway. Riley could do pretty much anything and it would make Lucas and Maya smile.
“You, too, Riley?” Lucas asks, eyebrows raised.
“Maya’s right! You were so used to hot weather for so long, and it almost never snows in the city. All that smog has you spoiled.”
“Oh, yeah, definitely spoiled,” Maya agrees with a conspiratory grin. “Save yourself, Huckleberry! Go on without us!”
“Please, Lucas! You must make it to dry land and tell our story!” Riley cries.
“Okay, I’m going,” Lucas laughs as he gets off the trampoline, jostling the girls. “But not because you told me to. Spring Break Lucas does what he wants and is not bossed around by his friends like he usually is.”
“Sure. As long as Spring Break Lucas still makes that delicious Three-Cheese Chicken Penne that Regular Lucas is so fond of.” Lucas just shrugs, but he’s grinning, and calls out to Farkle who Maya can see reading on the recliner to start boiling water. Riley and Maya hear do it yourself, I’m not your maid! from inside, and they both laugh as the door opens, flooding them with light briefly before submerging them in darkness once again.
Without Lucas, without anyone else, when it’s just Riley and Maya, it’s usually quiet. Hushed voices, soft touches, everything draped in fabric that mutes the outside world. They don’t notice the cars backfiring outside, or the yelling from the Morgensterns down the hall, or the sycamore tree scraping outside the window. Usually when it’s just Riley and Maya, they’re in the Bay Window, and the drapes and curtains always make the world seem softer somehow, safer.
Or maybe it’s just Riley and Maya that do that.
Maya thinks for a moment about how safe she feels right now, wrapped up in her best friend at her step-father’s house upstate. Riley talks sometimes about how this place looked before Maya ever saw it: drab, lifeless, boring. No pictures on the walls—not even any that Shawn took himself—no area rugs, no interesting furniture. It looked like a house and not a home. But then Cory started visiting more once Riley was old enough to take the train without getting nervous, and Topanga would stay home with Auggie while Cory and Riley would visit Shawn. They’d always bring something along when they went. Something permanent. A photostrip from the boys’ childhoods, or a drawing of a cat Riley made on the train ride up, all jagged lines and the kind of innocence they all thought she’d have to lose eventually.
The picture of the cat Riley drew at age nine is still up on the fridge, and it has the same lack of finesse that her art still has today. But that’s the thing Maya admires most about Riley: she never lets being terrible at something stop her from doing it. Maya knows if she hadn’t had a natural talent for art, she would’ve never pursued it, even if she knew how much she loved it. Fear of failure and rejection runs so deep in her that she thinks it must be paramount to her personality that this point. She doesn’t know who she’d be without it.
But she doesn’t need to; at least, not for the next four years. She is going to the Tisch School of the Arts in the fall, and this is their group’s last spring break together. Maya, Zay, Lucas, Farkle, Riley and Smackle have all been going to Shawn’s cabin every spring since their freshman year of high school. The first two years, Cory demanded that Shawn come along to “babysit.” Shawn ditched them to go hiking both years, and once Cory caught wind of this and the fact that nothing even remotely scandalous had happened while Shawn was absent, he allowed the six of them to go the next year unsupervised.
Most of the time, when the six of them are together, it’s chaos. They’re all loud personalities, and being cooped up in a tiny house for five days doesn’t usually go swimmingly. Last year, they nearly burned the place down when Zay and Maya got into a “flaming sword battle” with burning marshmallows on sticks. The year before that, Smackle and Riley got into an all-out fight over whether or not Buzzfeed quizzes were stupid or not. Riley told Smackle she doesn’t know how to have fun, and Smackle called Riley shallow, and Riley cried, and it took two whole excruciating days for them to start talking again. Lucas, their mediator, couldn’t even solve it. It ended up being Zay who finally out an end to it by telling them he was sick of needing to choose sides. They’re all friends, and they need to act that way. Riley apologized first, which still infuriates Maya to this day, and that was the fight that caused the biggest rift between Smackle and Farkle. He confided in Maya that he couldn’t stop thinking about how torn apart Riley was by being called shallow by his girlfriend.
Things became even more strained between the two of them after that, and their breakup came ten months later and was more drawn out than anything Maya has ever seen. Worse than when Lucas thought there was something romantic between them. Worse than her crush on Josh that was strung out to its last dying breath until Alan fucking Matthews sat her down and asked if she was okay and if his son was hurting her. The reality of the situation sunk in then, how she had been chasing him to ignore a much larger truth, and her come-to-Jesus moment about her sexuality came shortly after.
Worse than… anything.
It’s still bad even though it’s been a full year. They’re all still friends—Smackle is currently inside watching Animal Planet with Zay—but it’s strained. Maya can tell that Smackle feels more left out than she did when she was on the outside of the group looking in, even though they all invite her wherever they go, and Lucas has been dancing around both Farkle and Zay with long looks and stolen glances—the same long looks that Farkle himself gives to everyone he’s friends with, falling in love more easily and freely than he’d ever be able to quantify scientifically. The same long looks that Maya has been giving Riley since the day they met.
Maya is tired. She just wants everything to be alright. She wants to paint and see her friends happy and kiss Riley. Apparently, the world only wants her to do one of those things.
But even if she can’t kiss her, Maya is happy with Riley. She always is. Being with Riley in any state is better than being with anyone else. Even without the Bay Window, without cars backfiring and people screaming, they’re still safe. There’s stars to blanket them now, and bullfrogs from the pond just through the woods to talk back to them. No matter where they go, they’re still Riley and Maya. Riley is Maya’s best friend on earth, she always has been, and she knows that will never change.
Which is why she should’ve known that kissing her wouldn’t change it either.
“Hey, Maya?” Riley says sleepily from her place on Maya’s shoulder. Maya hums, lost in her own thoughts. “Why are cicadas so loud?”
“Why are you asking me?” Maya snorts. “There are two scientists right inside that I’m sure would be happy to ramble for hours about the etymology of cicadas.”
Unlike anyone else, because Riley is very much unlike everyone else, she doesn’t note Maya’s usage of a two-dollar word. Instead, she ignores the answer entirely, still trapped in her thought process. “Do you think they’re screaming?” It almost makes Maya laugh that Riley continued on as if Maya hadn’t said anything until she realizes that Riley knew all too well what Maya had proposed and how awkward it is for her to talk to both of those scientists right now for much different reasons. She sees the long looks Riley has been giving Farkle for years, and she sees the crafty ways she avoids conversation with Smackle. Maya notices more about Riley than she does anything else. If Riley were an academic subject, Maya would be a scholar in the field. “It kind of sounds like they’re screaming. I worry about them whenever we come up here. They only make noise at night. Do you think they’re hurt?”
“No, honey. I think maybe…” Maya sighs, pushing Riley’s hair away from her eyes so she can look at the night sky better. Riley’s hand tightens in the sweatshirt she borrowed from Shawn’s closet and turns her head slightly to watch the stars move while Maya thinks. “I think maybe they’re singing.”
Riley hums happily at that. “I hope so. Singing in their own special cicada language.”
“What songs do you think cicadas would like?” Maya is always glad to distract Riley from the negative thoughts that flit through her mind.
“Oooh… Bad 80s pop songs with weird beats. Yeah, definitely. Like, you know that one that Lucas is always playing?” Riley hums a little bit of it, and then starts singing it choppily. It’s a bit off-key but she’s clearly trying so hard, just like the way she always sings. Maya recognizes it immediately as Dela. Riley’s right, Lucas played this song non-stop when he discovered it in his venture into genres that weren’t the country music forced on him his entire childhood. She’s missing a few words here and there, so Maya joins her to fill in the spaces.
“I’ve been waiting for you all my life! Hoping for a miracle. I’ve been waiting day and night, day and night!” Riley suddenly sits up and clambers to her feet in that innately clumsy way she always seems to move with and begins jumping as Maya attempts to join her whilst still singing. “I’ve been waiting for you all my life! Waiting for redemption. I’ve been waiting day and night. I burn for you!”
Maya bears down hard on the trampoline at the right moment, and Riley sails high into the sky as they loudly finish the chorus of the song. She collapses onto her back with a shrill giggle, momentum bouncing her several times before she comes to rest. Maya joins her once again, a bit breathless, and then Riley looks over at her with her perfect toothy grin and Maya wonders if she’ll ever be able to breathe again.
And then Riley leans over, cups her cheek delicately in the cover of night, and kisses her. Simple, like they’d done it hundreds of times before, and for a moment, Maya thinks maybe they have. Maybe she’s met Riley before this life, with no bay window but the same amount of safety. Maybe they kissed then, too, and this is just a continuation of everything they’ve done before. It somehow feels more believable than something this natural being their first kiss. Distantly, Maya can hear Dela playing from the portable speakers inside, and she smiles into the kiss. She cradles Riley’s cheek, and Riley’s other hand rests against her steadily beating heart, and it’s perfect. Maya feels like she can finally breathe again.
Riley pulls back only slightly to look at her, and while Maya knows she’s blushing, Riley is not. Her smile is sweet, candy, like spun taffy that Maya wants to pull at until her smile is all that’s left of her. She wants Riley to be this happy always. It makes her a bit dizzy to know that she has the power to do that for someone who is constantly pushing aside her own happiness for others.
“Always wanted to do that,” Riley says in that quiet way she gets sometimes, but only ever around Maya.
Maya nods, and matches Riley’s grin. “Me, too.”
And perhaps it was always as simple as that. Their friends are still a tangled mess of unspoken feelings inside, but under the cover of darkness, her and Riley are just fine. There has never been anything tangled about them, and Maya feels foolish that she convinced herself there ever was.

Prom?
(Lucas Friar x Maya Hart)
Warnings: frustrating boyfriends
3.5k+ words
Tumblr media
Lucas’s promposal to Maya
She knew that he was gonna ask her, and she just silently begged that it wouldn’t be some big grand romantic cheesy gesture that happened in front of everyone. Of course, it was. She thought about all the things he might do but nothing definitive came to mind.
--
“You know what’s coming up don’t you?” He teased while waiting for her to get all of her stuff out of her locker.
“Tacos?” Maya asked hopefully, “That would really brighten my Monday.”
“Sure, we can get tacos after school but I mean something more like in like two months…”
“Oh, you mean us getting tacos after school in two months? Yeah, I can’t wait. I marked my calendar and everything.” Lucas chuckled lightly at her.
“No shortstack. This event is just happens to be a little more fancy, though I will still get you tacos.”
“Are you talking about this whole dance thing that every girl won’t shut up about?”
“Prom? Yes, I’m talking about Prom.” Maya obnoxiously gagged, “Come on Maya it’s our senior prom.”
“I don’t know huckleberry, it is JUST a dance.” She closed her locker and turned towards him.
“Yeah but it’s the last prom we will ever go to as high schoolers. Plus, I want to take you.”
“Oh? You think that you’re gonna take me?” Maya bit her lip slightly. He wrapped his arms around her waist lightly.
“What, you got your eyes on someone else?” He glanced away from her and dragged them across the heads of the sea of people, “cause if you don’t want to go…” He loosened his grip and slowly pulled them away from her. Before he could completely let go she placed her hands on his, putting them back around her.
"Is that what you’re doing? Trying to make me to hate you?” Maya teased him, “Because I know you don’t think you were just looking at other girls.”
“Of course not.”
“Okay, good. If you really want me to go then I will, but you better woo me.” She was joking and he knew it. But he wasn’t about to not try to impress her, he was just gonna do it in a big way. She might hate him but there is no possible way that she’ll say no.
“Oh I will.” He pressed a light kiss to her lips, “you coming to my game after school?”
“Of course.”
“You always come support me don’t you?” The gears started turning as the words fell from his mouth.
“Yep, so you better play well.”
“Of course.” The bell rang overhead. He kissed her cheek, “I have to get to math but I’ll see you in history.” She smiled and kissed him once more.
“Okay, see you then.” They parted ways going to their respective classes.
*after school*
Maya sat in the bleachers next to Riley who was next to Farkle. Lucas was talking to the rest of his team on the field pointing out to a member of the other team occasionally. Lucas finished talking and the team broke apart, taking their correct position. AA High School was on the outfield and Jones High School was up for bat. Lucas covered third base while Zay was a shortstop. The friends didn’t really know what was going on but they cheered all the same. After the game, which Abagail Adams won, the four friends and Izzy who showed up a few minutes late made their way to Zay and Lucas as they came out of the locker room. They hung out for the rest of the night, just enjoying each other’s company.
--
Now Maya didn’t know when it was gonna happen but she knew that it was coming soon and it was gonna be big. She dreaded the moment but now as she stood on the side of the baseball field, a camera in her hands her mind was elsewhere. It was on the players, the game, and the lens. She was just trying to capture a good photo. That’s all she wanted to do.
--
“Which tie do you think would be better?” he held up a dark blue and a dark green tie on either side of his neck.
“Why do you need a tie?” Maya asked confused and she lounged across his bed
“For Prom of course.”
“Oh yes, of course.” She rolled her eyes, “It’s what… a month and a half away?” He nodded and turned to the mirror, “Almost everyone’s been asked already.”
“Yeah. Why is that?”
“Because girls need time to pick out a dress.” Maya was becoming agitated. It was a Tuesday night and she was agitated. She wanted to have time to pick out a good dress too but the way he was playing this game wasn’t fair.
“So which tie?”
“I don’t know. It depends on what I’m wearing. We have to coordinate.”
“Well what are you wearing?” Maya glared at him but his back was still towards her.
“I don’t know yet.” She was seething. This was soo unfair.
“You better get on that, those dresses go by quickly.” He glanced her way, knowing full well what he was doing. He saw her red face and her clenched teeth but refused to meet her eyes. He just folded up the ties and placed them back on his desk. He walked back over to her and pressed his lips against hers. She relaxed almost instantly and wrapped her hands in his collar. She tried to pull him down onto the bed but he just forced her wrists off of him. He laughed and pulled away from her, she groaned.
“Another time, I promise. I have to get to baseball practice.” Maya, who basically forgot she was mad at him, pulled him in for another deep kiss before letting go and climbing out the window.
--
She held the camera up to her eye, twisting the lens and adjusting everything to try to form a decent photo but nothing worked. The sky was either too dark, the lights were too light, the ball was moving too fast, or the players weren’t doing anything interesting. She groaned and began to make her way to the other side of the field, hoping to find a new angle. She glanced in Lucas’s direction periodically as he talked to his team, something he often did as the captain. She took a photo, nothing yearbook worthy, of him and his wild gestures. She laughed at him and climbed to the top of a set of empty bleachers looking through the lens again. The game was about to start.
--
“It’s literally a month and a half away. Why hasn’t he asked me?” Maya complained to Riley who was putting her newly acquired bouquet of roses in a vase.
“I don’t know. I mean, we know he is going to ask you. Maybe he just assumes you are going together, he does that.” Riley fluffed the flowers but Maya just huffed and shook her head.
“No, he brought it up on Monday saying how he was gonna wow me. It just pisses me off that it hasn’t happened yet, I’m literally like the last girl to be asked.”
“Not the ones that are still hoping to be asked.”
“I am one of those girls now.” Maya sulked flopping on Riley’s bed.
“He’s gonna ask you. I wouldn’t worry.”
“That’s easy for you to say. Charlie asked you six months before the dance and then again with a big gesture today.” Riley smiled.
“Yeah…” She sighed, “What about Farkle and Smackle?”
“Oh Farkle did this whole experiment thing where one chemical reaction set off another. I don’t really know but it was super complicated and eventually it poured out this thing that set a banner on fire to only reveal Farkle standing there holding a sign that said Prom?.”
“That is sooo romantic. Zay asked Sarah?”
“Yeah, something with football and cheerleading. I didn’t see that one but people said it was cute.”
“Aww.”
“See? I’m the only one.”
“You guys are the strongest couple in the group, he’s gonna ask you.”
“But when? Because I still want time to get my dress.”
“Then go ahead and get it.”
“What?”
“Go get it. You know he’ll ask you so why not get your dress?”
“You know I will.” Maya checked her watch and cursed under her breath. “Shit.”
“What?”
“I told Lucas that I would meet him after his baseball practice.”
“But it’s Wednesday?” Maya just shrugged, “When does it end?”
“Ten minutes.” Maya sighed gathering her stuff quickly.
“School is twenty minutes away.” Riley stated.
“Yep so I gotta go!” Maya rushed out of the window.
“We’re going dress shopping tomorrow!” Riley called after Maya but got no confirmation. Maya quickly scurried down the fire escape, clutching the rails to keep from falling. She practically ran to the subway and only made it to the school five minutes late. Lucas was leaning against his car, scrolling through his phone and glancing upwards every now and then. Maya jogged up to him completely out of breath.
“Hey.” He said pocketing his phone, “You okay?”
“Very out of breath.” She gasped for air and draped herself across the hood of his car. He laughed at her.
“Did you leave? I thought you were going to say after to finish a project.”
“I was but I actually got it finished during class and Riley wanted me to come over so she could tell me all about her promposal.”
“Yeah I saw it, Charlie did a good job. He did something with carnations and made a pun like ‘what in carnation’ but I’m not positive.” Maya’s eyes narrowed as she adjusted her body to a sitting position on his car. “I could’ve picked you up there, you didn’t have to run here.”
“It wasn’t that big of a deal. Now get me food!” Maya spun around and Lucas chuckled. They both got into his truck and were about to pull out when Maya spotted a girl carrying a large poster, a teddy bear, flowers, chocolates, and balloons. Maya hated it.
“Where do you want to go?”
“Wherever.” She replied uninterested and annoyed. Lucas looked to her, Maya was looking out the window not meeting his gaze, and smirked. His plan was working.
--
The umpire blew a loud whistle and shouted once signaling the beginning of the game. Abagail Adams took their positions in the field. Maya took a few shouts of the boys doing their little chant and running onto the field, but she wasn’t too proud of any of them. She did get a fantastic shot though when the pitcher threw his first ball. She mentally cheered herself and got off the bleachers, walking closer to the players. She captured a couple great photos of the players and decided to just sit and wait until they batted. She joined the loud student section and slipped in with a semi-familiar gaggle of girls. Baseball was a tough sport to watch due to the quick drops in intensity but that’s not necessarily why Maya comes. She likes Lucas. He a good bean.
--
“What about this one?” Maya stepped out of the dressing room smoothing down the dress.
“LOVE IT!” Riley shrieked. Maya laughed at her and just silently cheered that the store was empty, it was a Thursday afternoon so that was expected.
“It makes your skin look a lot less white than usual.” Smackle stated.
“Hey, I have been tanning a lot in the past year!” Maya defended herself. She looked towards the mirror, uncertainty in her eyes, “You really like it?” It was a blue dress that had a lace bodice with a narrow deep v-neckline. The skirt flared out ever so slightly. Maya ran her hands over her waist toying lightly with the fabric.
“Maya, you look stunning.” Smackle said with a small smile.
“But if you don’t like it here then don’t get it.” Maya tipped her head to the side, her tongue poking her cheek. She thought about Riley’s words and eventually shook her head.
“Are you gonna get one?” Maya asked Riley after going back into the dressing room.
“Yeah, I’ve been looking at a few but nothing has stuck out.” Riley slumped.
“I can help you.” Smackle offered sweetly.
“Do you already have yours Izzy?” Maya called from behind the door. Suddenly a large piece of blue fabric flew over the door startling the other two girls. “And can you put that back?”
“Yeah sure.” Riley sighed, “I might look at some dresses too so just call me if you need anything peaches.”
“Okay.”
“I’ll go with you Riley.” Smackle began to walk off but popped back in, “and yes Maya I already have mine.” Maya picked out her second dress and pulled it over her head. It was a black halter dress that skated across the floor. It had a small key-hole cut out between her breasts and a completely open back with a long slit up the side. It was gorgeous. Maya checked herself out in the small mirror in the dressing room, turning around slightly and examining her butt. It looked good. She stepped out to see herself in the full mirror.
“Hey Riley?” Maya called out, “How does this look?”
“Maya!” Maya’s head whipped around at the sound of her friend’s cry. Riley came rushing in and Maya was extremely worried, “I found the dress for you!”
Maya put a hand over her heart, “riley you almost gave me a heart attack.”
“Peaches!” Riley whined, “Look at it!” She held it up and Maya studied it, it was definitely pretty.
“Yeah, I’ll put it on next. How about this one though?”
“It’s nice but you shouldn’t wear black because you wore it last year.”
“Good point.” Maya grabbed the wine colored dress from Riley and went back to the room, “Did you find a dress?”
“Yeah a few. I’ll try them on in a minute.”
“Where’s the little chipmunk?”
“Oh Farkle came to pick her up so they could talk about Prom details.” Riley explained. Maya stepped out a moment later wearing the tight wine colored dress. It was a high neckline halter dress that had a very simple rectangular cut out just above her waist in the back. The dress was very simplistic and had no other details other than the high slit that ran up her left leg. “Maya…” Riley was speechless.
“Riley, this is gorgeous but…” Maya didn’t know how she was gonna afford it, “I don’t know.”
Riley sprang up and began to feel the dress, “Is this velvet? Maya, this is amazing. You have to get it!”
Maya decided to just say it, “it’s too expensive.”
“Maya, why do you think my mom gave me this credit card? It was literally made for only the buying of our dresses. She intended to buy yours and mine.” Riley’s tone didn’t sound condescending but it also wasn’t uplifting and reassuring either.
Maya bit her lip and shook her head slightly, “no.”
“What?”
“I’m gonna pay for it. I want to.” She did want to pay for it. She didn’t want the pity money and it was her last prom.
“If you insist. Now take that off and help me find a dress!” Riley began jumping up and down quickly bounding back to the dress racks. Maya looked at the price tag and winced, she was gonna have to talk to her mom about this. After a long twenty minute phone call where Maya made a string of promises about working extra shifts and paying her back Katy finally agreed to put Maya’s dress on the emergency card. The girls were in the shop for another hour until Riley finally picked out a dark blue form fitting dress that had a deep v-neckline. It was perfect for her form and accentuated every part perfectly though Maya wasn’t sure how Mr. Mathews was going to feel about it. They paid for their dresses and headed back to the subway when Maya got a text.
Mom: Low on staff, can you help out?
Maya: Sure I’m on my way
Maya gave her dress to riley to hang up at her house, promising to get it the next day and boarded a different train heading to the Nighthawk Diner. She arrived in record time and quickly changed into a waitress outfit. She know the routine perfectly at this point and quickly fit into the rhythm of the afternoon and was taking orders left and right. It wasn’t until 8 at night and she finally had a break that she realized Lucas had been trying to contact her.
Lucas: I thought we were gonna study for History after my baseball?
Lucas: Where are you?
Lucas: Are you okay?
About five other messages like those were sent over the course of the three hours of inactive phone usage. Maya cursed silently and quickly texted him back apologizing and explaining that she was working.
Lucas: look up
Maya lifted her head from her spot behind the counter and saw Lucas siting on a bar stool with a large goofy smile on his face. She chuckled slightly and walked to him
“What are you doing here?”
“I figured that you were working, came to surprise you.” Lucas shrugged.
“Well, thank you.” She pecked his lips lightly, “yeah sorry about that. Haven’t had a break in a little bit so I haven’t been on my phone in a while.”
“No worries. How’s it going?”
Maya sighed and slumped against the counter, “Really busy until like twenty minutes ago. I don’t get it, it’s a Thursday.”
“There was a big basketball game at a stadium nearby.” Lucas informed her. She nodded her head.
“That makes sense.” She glanced at his clothes, “Are you still in your uniform?”
“Yeah, practice ran REALLY late. I texted you during a break when I thought we were done but then some kid pissed off the coach and we stayed extra.”
“Jackson?” Maya asked knowingly. The kid, a junior, was always making trouble in the hallways.
“Yeah. He said some shit about a girl and coach heard. Ugh.” Lucas frowned. Maya leaned on her hand.
“Want anything?”
“Can I have some water? I ran out of mine in like the first twenty minutes.” Maya chuckled as she grabbed him a glass of water. “You want anything?”
“Oh I didn’t realize you worked here.” Maya teased sticking her tongue out at him
“Ha ha. No, I’ll pay for your dinner though.”
“Naw I’m good.” The two fell into a small conversation that was interrupted by their laughs constantly. It wasn’t until Maya was berated by her manager for socializing on the job that she shooed out Lucas with a kiss and a see you tomorrow.
--
Abagail Adams High won like always but this was special. It was there last game of the year and it completed their undefeated season. The guys rushed the field and all joined in a dogpile. Maya capture it all laughing at them. Lucas caught her gaze and walked to the edge of the field, Maya met him halfway.
“Good job cowboy.”
“Thanks shortstack.” He kissed her before he was interrupted by the hollering of his teammates.
“Hey get your team together and I’ll take a photo for the yearbook.” He nodded and rounded up the guys. Maya took several photos before going to the coach.
“Uh are there any photos you would like done for the yearbook?” Maya tried to ask as politely as she could even though she hated the baseball coach and his strict policies at school.
“No thank you Ms. Hart but I appreciate the offer.” Maya nodded and walked back to the edge of the field. Lucas came back up to her.
“Hey I have to go get something but I’ll be right back.” Maya nodded and began to look through the photos on the camera.
“Hey Maya.” She heard Zay call. She looked up, “Can you get a photo of us?”
“Uh… yeah sure give me a second.” Maya wasn’t paying attention to the group of guys that began forming themselves into a line. She leveled the camera to her eye and saw five guys shirtless with letters on their stomachs. She lowered the camera.
“Prom?” She saw Zay with the question mark on his stomach, “Aw Zay, I’m flattered but you already asked someone.” The students were gathering around all of them with their cameras out.
“Actually I was hoping you’d go with me.” Lucas said from behind her. Maya slowly turned around to reveal Lucas standing with a bouquet of flowers in one hand and a large bag of tacos in the other.
Maya pretended to think, “Only because you got me tacos.” She grabbed the bag and kissed him. Cheers erupted from around and bright lights went off. She broke apart, “you suck you know that?”
“Yeah I know that but the tension made it better right?”
“I guess??” Maya hadn’t really thought about it, “Can we go eat these now?”
“Yeah let’s just get a photo. They stood by Zay and the other boys with Lucas’s arm wrapped around her waist.  Another one of his teammates took a photo of them. Lucas kissed her cheek. “Happy now?”
“Of course.” She kissed him back, “I got my tacos.”

An Unexpected Meeting | Part 1
Summary: AU: ‘This isn’t how I thought we’d meet’, Lucas’ is Zay’s childhood friend, Zay knows the rest of the Clique Six through college. Zay is convinced that Lucas and Riley would be perfect together. They finally meet when Lucas moves to New York but not in the way either thought they would. A/N: This was inspired by that quote and here we are. TW for sexual assault, and there is some swearing involved.  Pairing: Riley x Lucas  Words: 2,303
“I’m telling you man! You two are going to hit it off! You two are perfect for one another and after the shit heads she’s dated…man, she needs a guy like you.” Zay shook his head as he once again lectured Lucas.
“Zay.  I know you’ve only told me a hundred times. And now I’ve constantly got Maya, Farkle and Smackle telling me.” Lucas rolled his eyes at his friend as they hung out in their living room.
Lucas had recently moved to New York to start veterinary school, Zay had been living in the city since college and was more than excited to have his best friend back in the same city as him. The two had gone to school together in Texas since pre-k and parted ways when it was time for college. Zay had met Maya, Farkle, and Smackle in college and quickly hit it off. He had also met Riley through Maya and was convinced since the moment they met that her and Lucas would be perfect for each other. Lucas had met the rest of the gang on different occasions through college and formed a friendship with them, moving to the city had only cemented it. But he and the pretty brunette were always missing each other. He’d been living in the city for a month at this point and today was the day they were going to meet. She was coming over so that they could all go to Topanga’s together and hangout.
“I’m sure she’s great, but can you all calm down geez, you’re making me nervous.” Truth be told Lucas was already nervous he had seen pictures of Riley before and he was convinced she was a goddess set loose on the world, and everything else he had heard about the brunette only convinced him further.
“Whatever man. It’s going to be great! Nothing’s going to ruin this!” Zay shouted excitedly at that moment there was a knock on the door, Zay sprung to get it hoping it was the pretty brunette. But sadly that was not the case.
Riley stood by her door debating on whether or not to bring her camera bag with her. She had discovered her talent in high school and her camera was with her ever since. She majored in Photography during college and her friends rarely saw her without her trusty camera she had named Ro. She knew she didn’t need her camera but she never knew when inspiration might strike. Plus she could fit whatever was going in her purse into the bag, after a good moment of debating she decided on her camera bag. Grabbing her keys and heading out the door. Texting Zay to let her know she was coming over. He had insisted that she come over before so they could all walk to the bakery together. She knew that he just wanted to make sure she finally met Lucas. He heart fluttered at the name, she had seen pictures of him before but never met him. She was convinced he was a Greek god with his dirty blonde hair and green eyes. Everything she had heard about him was good, he sounded great. She was coming down the stairs to the floor Zay lived on when her phone buzzed. She had Maya had a small apartment a few floor above the boys that she loved. She since was at their door she didn’t bother looking at her phone, figuring it was Zay with an okay. Once she opened the door she wished she had.
Zay was shocked when he opened his door. There stood his freshman and sophomore year roommate, Ryan. They had been okay roommates, but at one point Ryan and Riley had been on a few dates and he had been a total asshole to her. Riley had quickly told Ryan that she didn’t want to see him again in a romantic sense but Ryan couldn’t seem to accept that. And he acted out in anger and always was super rude to Riley whenever she was around. It had basically ruined what little friendship Zay and him had had. Zay didn’t loose much sleep over it, Riley was much more important to him.
“Ryan. What are you doing here?” Zay asked crossing his arms as Ryan burst in. Lucas quickly sensed the awkwardness of the situation and retreated to his room, not wanting to get involved in the drama. He knew that if Zay needed him all he had to do was shout.
“Nothing I just came by to see my old buddy Zay, see how life was treating you. Wondering if you’ve seen a pretty brunette recently and if she mentioned me?” Ryan asked Zay while he plopped his feet up on the coffee table.
“That’s none of your business, Riley has no interest in you. Now can you please go.” Zay wanted him out of here as fast as possible he knew it wouldn’t be a good first meeting between Riley and Lucas if Ryan was involved in anyway.
It was at that moment that Riley walked in with a look of horror on her face. He could see her quickly debate walking out but Ryan saw her before she could bolt.
“Riley! How good to see you!” Ryan walked over and gave her a big hug, which she did not return and tried to stop him pulling her to the couch but his grip was too tight.
“I just came over to get Zay and Lucas so we could go.” Riley told Ryan shortly.
“I was just going to grab Lucas and the three of us can go!” Zay said quickly, “And no Ryan. You’re not invited.” Just as Zay got up to get Lucas his phone started to ring, Riley gave him a look of terror hoping he wouldn’t answer it and leave her here alone with Ryan.
“Shit. It’s my mom I gotta answer she only calls me when its something important. I promise I’ll only be a moment.” Zay gave Riley an im sorry look and answred his phone. He went to Lucas’ room and knocked on his door asking his mom to hold on for a sec and he’d help her with her issue. He just needed to tell Lucas something.
“Lucas, bro. Riley’s here can you please go out there and save her from Ryan. Remember Ryan I told you about him? He doesn’t get no, and he’s always terrible to Riley. My mom needs me.” Lucas shot up and headed to the living room, Zay and vented to him about Ryan and the guy really boiled his blood. From what he heard he treated Riley terribly and Lucas had no room in his life for people who were nasty for sport.
When he walked out he wished he had gotten there sooner.
As soon as Zay left Ryan had started in on Riley. He kept putting his hand closer up her leg and his grip was too tight for her to move it. The grip hurt and Riley just wanted him to get his hands off her.
“Ryan move your hand, you’re hurting me and I’m not doing this with you. Like I told you years ago I’m not interested.” Ryan seemed to only get more frustrated with this and gripped her tighter and putting an arm around her should and putting his hand on her face with another tight grip.
“Riley come on you know you like me. Just give in.” Ryan just gripped her face tighter with his fingers.
“No.” Riley stated with no room for argument, she was close to tears.  He had always been pushing and rude to her but he had never been this aggressive with her. She was sure she’d be bruised.  Ryan apparently didn’t hear her or care because he leaned in to kiss her. But as she closed her eyes with tears springing the corners and tried to push him off she felt him being pulled off. As he was pulled off he scraped her cheek harshly causing her to cry out. She looked up to see who she assumed was Lucas shoving him out the apartment with a great force.
“Get the hell out Ryan and don’t even think about coming back.” Lucas slammed the door as he threw Ryan out, beyond enraged that someone would try to force themselves on anyone, let alone Riley. When he turned to Riley he was sure his heart stopped she was even prettier in person. She had a soft glow about her and all Lucas wanted was to sit with her and find out everything about her. But she was trying not to sob with her hand pressed against her cheek. He quickly sat down next to her ready to offer comfort when she threw herself into his chest still crying. He was quick to respond wrapping his arms around her and stroking her back.
Riley was overwhelmed her face hurt like hell, and she just wanted a hug. As soon as Lucas sat down she couldn’t help but throw her head into his chest and felt his arms wrap around her. He smelled amazing Riley noticed as her crying started to settle, he smelled like cedar and sage and ocean? Once she stopped crying she pulled her head out of his chest, embarrassed as the situation she decided now was probably when she should formally introduce herself. He hand was still against her cheek as she turned to face Lucas. “This isn’t how I thought we’d meet, but I’m Riley” she offered him a shy smile, which Lucas returned with his own.
“I’m Lucas, it’s very nice to meet you Riley.” The two just started at each other for a few minuets before Lucas noticed she as still holding her check.
“Hey let me take a look at that.” Lucas said as he gently removed her hand from her face. He immediately felt tingles down his arm and he was sure he felt the brunette shiver as he took her face in his hands to examine it. Ryan had definitely drawn blood and left a good few scratches on there.
“Let me get some stuff to clean it off, who knows where he’s been. You just stay right there Riley.” Riley smiled softly at him and nodded.
As Lucas went to the bathroom to get the first aid kit Zay walked back in.
Seeing Riley with bloody scrapes on her cheeks and puffy red eyes he quickly walked over. “What happened? Oh my god! Are you okay? Did Ryan do this! I’ll kill him.” Zay was stopped getting up when Riley pulled him back down.
“Yeah it was Ryan, but don’t worry Lucas took care of him. He literally threw him out of your apartment. He went to get the first aid kit for me.” Riley explained with a shy expression. Zay wiggled his eyebrows at her and she shoved him lightly “Shut up Zay.”
Lucas walked in on them laughing together and he was sure he had never heard a more beautiful sound. “I got the kit.” Lucas held it up as he brought it over the couch. He put gloves on before cleaning her wound gently, and delicately putting a cotton pad over it with some tape as it was still bleeding.  As he did this he and Riley chatted about what they were going to be doing. He told her about becoming a vet, and she told him about how she was a photographer.
Riley looked at Lucas once he was done batting her lashes, “Do you think I’ll live Dr. Friar?”
Lucas chuckled softly tucking some hair behind her ear, “I think so Riley, just make sure you change the bandage before you go to bed tonight. And if you need help, well you can come up and I’ll help you.” The two once again got lost in each other’s eyes before Zay cleared his throat.
“Okay lovebirds. I’m going to head to Topanga to see the gang. Riley I’m sure they’ll understand if you want to skip considering… uh Ryan.”
“Yeah I think I’m just going to go home and lie down for a while instead.” Riley answered with a shrug.
“Or if you want, you can stay here and I’ll keep you company?” Lucas asked Riley with a hopeful look. He really wanted to spend more time with her but he didn’t want to push her.
“That’d actually be really nice, Lucas. Thank you.” Riley gave him her own sheepish smile and it wasn’t long before they were lost in conversation. The more they talked the closer they sat and it wasn’t long before Riley’s head was on Lucas’ shoulder and he casually played with her fingers. At some point later in the afternoon they had turned the tv on and Riley had fallen asleep and Lucas wasn’t far along after her.
That was the sight Zay walked in on when he came back from Topanga’s with the gang. Riley’s head on Lucas shoulder, his head on top of hers and their hands clasped in between the two of the, He had filled their friends in on the events with Ryan. And as pissed as they all were with Ryan, they were sure Riley and Lucas would be together very shortly. He threw a blanket over them and went to his own room to get ready for bed. When he got up in the morning they were still there, peacefully sleeping in the same position. They shyly awoke sometime later, Riley left with plans to meet up with Lucas later that day and get coffee and continue talking. After she left Zay gave Lucas a look, “I told you man! I told you perfect for one another!”

On the fourth day of Ficmas, hoffkk gave to me...
Four Dancing Elves (A Rucas Fanfic)
*******
Riley was sitting by herself in her parents cafe, lounging on the vintage loveseat and drinking hot chocolate.  Checking her phone, she saw it was 4:00 on the dot, the exact time Lucas said he would meet her.   He said he had a surprise for her, and Riley couldn't even fathom what it could be.  Trying to contain her excitement, she glanced around the cafe in search of her boyfriend.  There were some college kids grabbing breakfast and coffee, an elder gentleman drinking tea ad doing the newspaper crossword puzzle,  and some women with shopping bags checking out the glass case of baked goods, but there was no Lucas... yet.  She hummed a Christmas tune to pass the time then, after a couple of minutes, checked her phone again.  IT was now 4:02, and Lucas was nowhere to be seen.  Displeased with his tardiness, she frowned then took a sip of her warm beverage.   Normally, Lucas running late would be no big thing, but since he was leaving early the next morning for a big family Christmas back in Texas, she wanted to spend as much time with him as possible until then, especially since he wouldn't be back until after the new year.  Yes, this holiday break was going to be long and torturous, but Riley tried not to let herself dwell on that or Lucas's lateness.  Instead, she tried to distract herself again by texting her other friends to see what they were up to.  She texted Maya, Zay, Smackle, and Farkle all in one big group message.  A few minutes went by, and there was not a single reply. Riley tried texting them all again, this time individually, only to get the same result.  It was now 4:10, and she was officially concerned.  Where was everybody?
She was about to text yet again when the bells on the cafe door jingled, signaling the arrival of a customer.  Immediately turning her head, she found Lucas in the entryway, grinning brightly. Riley beamed at him and said, "Hey."
"Hey." Lucas repeated, standing there unmoving.  "I'm sorry I'm late, I was getting your Christmas present ready, and it took longer than I thought to get everything set up."
"What do you mean?"  Riley asked curiously.
"I'll think it'll be easier if I just show you."  He decided as his smile widened.  "Hit it, guys."  He tossed over his shoulder and out the door before making his way over to the seat beside his girlfriend.
Furrowing her brow, she stared at the door and waited to see what happened next.  She almost lost it when, Maya, Zay, Smackle, and Farkle all filed inside dressed like elves.  They had the complete costumes from the hats and pointy ears down to the tights and whimsical slippers.  Before Riley could comment, Zay set down the portable speaker he was holding, placed his cell phone next to it and hit play.
The room instantly filled with an up tempo drumbeat accompanied by jingle bells.  After a few beats, Maya called out, "1, 2... 1, 2, 3..."
All of sudden, her four elfish friends began dancing and singing in perfect unison,
"Let's make the whole year Christmas No reason to forget this Feeling we're feelin' now Gotta keep it going all year round Let's keep the sleigh bells ringing We'll keep the whole world singing, Feel so good why stop now? Let's make Christmas the whole year round."
Riley squealed as she clapped happily in delight.  She loved this song.  It was one of her favorite Christmas jams.  She could never remember the name of the artist who sang it though.  All she ever remembered was that she looked freakishly like Maya.  It really was spooky how much they resembled each other.  Not letting that thought distract her, Riley kept watching intently as Maya stepped forward and sang solo,
"I don't care if snow stops falling down Santa's come and gone, yeah he's left town I don't need a Christmas tree, Mistletoe, or red and green All I need is you next to me To make every night Christmas Eve."
As Maya finished the first verse and they all sang the chorus together once more, Riley threaded her fingers in between Lucas's and squeezed tightly.  This was her way of silently telling him how much she was enjoying this little performance.  As the chorus came to a close, Zay slid forward and showed off his mad dance skills as he executed his own solo.
"All those pretty lights have been put away And old Rudolph is gone on holiday We'll keep that fire burning Though the calendar is turning Why stop at 1, hey, what for? When we can have 364 more!"
Finishing his last note with a Michael Jackson style jump up to tiptoes, the other three joined back in. They did yet another round of the chorus, then Smackle and Farkle came forward together and began doing an adorable partner dance as they sang the next part as their own personal duet.
"I don't need a Christmas tree Mistletoe or red and green All I need is you next to me To make every night Christmas Eve."
Farkle rolled Smackle in toward him and back out with his opposite arm, so that they were apart and striking a fun pose on the last note.  It was the cutest thing Riley had ever seen, the whole routine was, especially when they all joined together for the final chorus of the song and began a kick line. She couldn't help but giggle at that as their voices rang out,
"Let's make the whole year Christmas No reason to forget this Feeling were feelin' now, Gotta keep it going all year round Let's keep the sleigh bells ringing We'll keep the whole world singing Feel so good why stop now? Let's make Christmas the whole year Make Christmas the whole year Let's make Christmas the whole year round Let's make Christmas the whole year round!"
The kick line faded into partner dancing for the rest of the song.  At the end, the boys got down on one knee as the girls held their hand and twirled around them in a small circle.  On the very last note of the very last line, the girls sat down on their laps, crossed their legs, put one arm around their neck and extended the other up in the air with fingers spread out in a jazz hand motion.  The boys extended their free arm the same way but downward.  Once the music stopped, Riley stood up and began to clap.  Much to her friends' appreciation, so did the rest of the cafe patrons.
"You guys, that was awesome."  Riley said truthfully.  It really was amazing, and the fact that Lucas planned it all and put it together just for her, well, that just made it completely perfect.  He was definitely the best boyfriend ever in the history of boyfriends.
"Thanks, Riles." Maya smiled.
"Yeah, it was nothing." Zay agreed.
"When Lucas told us about his gift idea and asked for our help, we couldn't say no." Farkle told her.
"I also couldn't say no to this sexy elf outfit." Smackle chimed in, making them all chuckle. When she caught Lucas smiling at her, she immediately spat, "Stop hitting on me!"
Everyone laughed a little more, then Zay said, "All right, I don't know about y'all, but this hot chocolate needs some hot chocolate."
"Libations sound good to us."  Farkle said as Smackle nodded in agreement.
"Okay then," Maya chimed in.  "Why don't we give these two crazy kids a minute alone and see what my mom's got cooked up behind the counter."
Riley looked to Lucas and smiled.  He smiled back sheepishly and said, "So, you really liked it?  It wasn't too much?"
"It was wonderful."  She affirmed. "I can't believe you went to all that trouble."
"Well, Riley, being with you is like having Christmas all year round, and I really wanted you to that.  I wanted you to know just how special you are to me."  Lucas explained as he retrieved a neatly wrapped gift box from his letterman jacket pocket.  He got quiet as he handed it to her and watched her open it.
Riley tore the reindeer wrapping paper off to reveal a red velvet box.  She tossed the paper on the coffee table and studied the box a moment before opening it.  Slowly, Riley lifted the lid to reveal the prettiest sterling silver necklace.  It had a charm at the end that sparkled.  It was a heart intertwined with an infinity symbol.  It was beautiful.
Riley was speechless as she stared at the thoughtful gift, so Lucas took advantage of silence and told her, "You truly are a gift, Riley.  Every.  Single. Day."
Meeting his eyes, she beamed up at him for a moment before throwing her arms around him and pulling him close.  Pulling back ever so slightly, she whispered in his ear and said for the first time ever, "I love you, Lucas."
Pulling back quickly, Lucas looked at her with eyes that sparkled with a mix of adoration and excitement, "What did you just say?"
Smirking, she replied, "I know were only seniors in high school, but I know what I feel.  You are the best person I know--"
"Hey!" Maya yelled from the coffee counter, obviously eavesdropping.
"Besides Maya." Riley amended.  When Maya nodded her approval, she continued, "Anyway, as I was saying, you are one of the best people I know.  You make me feel happy and special and are always there for me.  The truth is, if I tried to dream up the perfect guy, he wouldn't even come close to you.  Tonight, you really proved that, just like you do every day... and I love you for it. I love you, Lucas Friar."
As he stood their grinning from ear to ear with Riley in his arms, there was only one thing to say.
"I love you too, Riley Matthews."  He replied, the words sounding so natural as they rolled off his tongue.  Unable to stop himself, (not that he wanted to) he leaned forward and kiss her deeply.  After a moment, he pulled back, leaned his forehead against hers and whispered, "Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas." She repeated cheerfully then kissed him again.
Lucas gratefully accepted and, as he lovingly embraced his girlfriend, he couldn't help but think that even though Riley is the one walking home with a gift box, he is the one who got the best Christmas present ever.

Chapter 5: There is Healing
Riley’s eyes fluttered open as the morning sun brightened up her room.  She let out a sigh and rolled over to look at her clock which was long since broken.  Usually she just used her phone to set her alarm or to check the time, but for some reason, having that dumb broken antique clock on her side table was a comfort. It helped Riley sleep at night.
The clock had broken when she was still in college.  It was a gift from her parents when she first left home, and in her junior year one of the springs snapped.  Riley just never found the time to get it repaired, but recently she didn’t see a point to getting it fixed.
Somehow, she hoped leaving it in its current state would help tomorrow from coming.  But it hadn’t – and the hope had lasted for over two months.
Riley flopped onto her back and let out a sigh.  It wasn’t a secret, at least between her, Maya, and Izzy that she was trying her best to move on with her life.  She wasn’t going to lie to herself – she still had her doubts.  Riley was definitely damaged, but her broken heart was still beating.
There may be pain in healing, Riley thought, but it sure takes its time in doing so!
One thing was for sure – Lucas had gotten back inside of her head, and he wouldn’t leave.  I tried to guard myself, but around him I’m an open book…
A pounding on her door interrupted her trail of thought.  Riley let out a groan as she swung her legs over, pulled on the nearest hoodie, and headed to the door.  She glanced down at her phone as she shuffled towards the entryway.  “Eight thirty in the morning… on a Saturday.  Who in the world –” Riley started, but was interrupted by more pounding.  “I’m coming, I’m coming!  Geez, what do you expect for this time in the morning on the weekend.”
Riley opened the door to reveal her raven haired friend standing in the doorway.  “About time, Bubbles!” Smackle declared as she stepped into the apartment.
Riley sighed as she closed the door.  “Izzy, what are you doing here?  If you hadn’t noticed, most of the city is still sleeping,” she commented as she crossed her arms.  It may have come out a bit harsh, but to be honest, she did wake up only about ten minutes ago.  Her mind was still muddled with sleep and she wasn’t thinking clearly.
“I have come to cheer you up!” Smackle replied as a beaming smile spread across her face, making her eyes glint.
Her eyebrow shot up in confusion.  “And how do you plan on doing this exactly?”
“I decided to find you something to get you out of the apartment, so I found you a date for this evening for Maya’s New Year’s Party tonight.”
Riley nearly choked on air at her friend’s words.  “Smackle, what the – why on Earth would you do that?!”
Isadora’s smile fell upon Riley’s reaction.  “You had told me last month you wanted to move past this jarring run in with Lucas. I thought this would help the healing process.  Was my hypothesis wrong?”
Riley ran a hand through her hair and closed her eyes briefly.  “No – I appreciate what you did.  You’re right; I need to get out of this apartment.  However, I’m not sure if a date is the answer.”
Smackle raised her hands in defense.  “Do not think of it as an official date, but perhaps a chance to get to know him.  ‘No strings attached’ as Maya may put it.  If you two get along, that would be good; if not, you part as acquaintances.
“I told him a good friend of mine required a night out and needed a friendly companion.  He then inquired if it would be a date.”
“And?” Riley probed.
“I informed him it would most likely be closer to a ‘hang out’ than an actual date, and he agreed. He is not really one for blind dates.”
Riley wrung her hands as she contemplated what Smackle just placed before her.
Seeing her friend’s doubt, Isadora continued on, “Have I mentioned he is a hunk? H-U-N-K, hunk.”
Riley couldn’t help but smile as Smackle’s comment brought her back to eighth grade.  “Okay, Izzy, I’ll take you up on your offer.  What’s his name?”
Her smile returned as she said, “David.”
OoOoO
Riley tugged on the hem of her dress as she approached Maya’s apartment in Soho.  She didn’t know what she was getting herself into.  Why did I agree to this? her mind raced.  Sure, it felt kind of nice to get out of her apartment, but why in the world did she agree to meet up with this David fellow?  Even if it wasn’t technically a date, Riley was still regretting it a bit.
She let out a sigh as she entered the apartment building.  The heated air seeped through her skin.  Riley made her way up the stairs and headed down the hall to Maya’s apartment, letting herself in.
Even though the party started about ten minutes prior, the apartment was already filled with people. She slid off her pea coat and revealed a knee length red satin dress.  Riley didn’t have her coat off for more than two seconds before she heard her name being called out amongst the crowd.  She turned around to see Maya, sporting a black and silver beaded dress that hugged her body and fell just above her knees, champagne flute in hand.
“Hey Riles,” she greeted as she wrapped her in a hug.  “I wasn’t sure if you were going to come.  I’m glad you did, though.”
Riley smiled as she hung up her coat.  “Yeah… Izzy kind of helped with that.”
“Well, you’re here. It’s a step in the right direction… anyway, drinks are on the counter, you probably know most everyone here,” Maya paused.  “Are you going to be okay?”
“Yeah, I think I will be. I’ll let you know if that changes. Go, have fun.  It’s your party.”
“Are you sure?”
Riley nodded.  “Yes, I’m sure.  I need to find Smackle – she has someone she wants to introduce to me.”
Maya’s eyes widened as she tilted her head.  “Oooh! Look at you!  Good luck!”
The two friends parted and Riley began to weave through the crowd.  It didn’t take her long to spot Smackle in her cream dress with a crocheted lace bodice by the balcony standing beside a tall dark haired man.  His hair was slicked back, and it would probably cover some of his hazel eyes had it not been.  Riley raised her eyebrows slightly as she noticed how he was dressed – blue slacks and a baby blue button up shirt layered under a gray v neck sweater.  She definitely found him attractive.
“Riley!” Smackle called out. With a smile, Riley made her way over towards them.  “Riley, this is David – one of my coworkers.  David, this is Riley – a good friend of mine.  With that, I shall leave you two alone.”
With that, Smackle headed into the crowd of people, attempting to wink in Riley’s direction before she disappeared.  Riley turned towards David with an awkward smile.  She let out a nervous chuckle as David slid his hands in his pockets.
The two stood in silence for a few moments before Riley said, “So, do you know anyone else here?”
David bobbed his head from side to side.  “Besides Isadora, I know Farkle, but that’s about it.”
Once Farkle’s name left his mouth, Riley’s eyes automatically started scanning the room. She didn’t see him when she came in, but sure enough he was now standing next to Smackle with his arm around her shoulders.  She hadn’t seen him in a while, and Riley made a mental note to reach out to him soon. “I know most everyone here.  It’s mostly mine and Maya’s friends from high school and college.  I hope it’s not too awkward for you.”
David shook his head. “No, not really.  I usually don’t find it too hard to strike up a conversation with someone I don’t know.”
“Well, we’re doing a stellar job at that so far, aren’t we?” Riley replied sarcastically.
He let out a soft chuckle. “Touché.  It’s probably the situation we’re in.  Even though it’s not technically a date…” David trailed.
“…it still kind of feels like one.”
More silence drifted between the two before David asked, “Do you want to start over?”
Riley raised an eyebrow. “Start what over?  We’ve barely been next to each other for five minutes.”
David nodded.  “Yeah, and it seems like we’re going down a dead end.” He pushed himself off the wall, fixed his posture, ran his hand through his hair, and stuck his hand out.  “David Hogan.  And who might you be?”
She couldn’t help but roll her eyes playfully as she took his hand.  “Riley Matthews.  It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“The pleasure is all mine,” he replied as he kiss the back of her hand, making Riley blush.  From her end, this was making it all the more strange, but still a bit fun.
“So Riley,” David continued, “tell me, do you know any of these fine party goers on this lovely New Year’s Eve?”
Riley wanted to laugh at what was taking place, but she managed to stifle her laughter.  “I know most of them.  Actually, I came here because one of my friends wanted to introduce someone to me.”
David nodded teasingly and coyly smiled.  “Interesting. Have you managed to meet him yet?”
She shook her head, deciding to have fun with where the conversation was going.  That’s why she was there tonight, right?  “No, no… it doesn’t look like he showed up.”
“Well he’s a fool if you ask me, stand a beautiful young lady up like yourself.  What is it that you like doing in your free time?”
Riley let out a light sigh before she answered.  “Oh, you know… stuff that most people find uninteresting or think it’s rather stupid.”
David reached out and lightly placed his hand on her shoulder.  “Please, tell me.”
She looked deep into his eyes and saw that the play was over, the charade gone.  Despite starting the conversation out in a goofy manner, he was genuinely interested in what she liked to do.  “Reading – I like a lot of the classics, hiking, writing… stuff like that. I’m a photo journalist most of the time, so it’s nice to be able to convey a story in a different medium. Over the past year or so, I’ve actually been trying to work on my own book –” Riley cut herself off before she said anymore and quickly looked away from him.  She hadn’t told anyone about her little side project.  Not her friends, not her family – no one.  She had been meaning to tell a few people for a while, but it had been pushed onto the back burner.
Riley looked back up at David, and the same look remained on his face.  “No, that doesn’t seem uninteresting at all.  Who doesn’t want to create worlds?”
“I guess that’s one way of looking at it.”
David smiled gently as he continued to speak.  “Now that you’ve divulged some information on yourself, I guess I should do the same. I work in the same lab as Smackle, majored in Biochemistry.  I, too, enjoy reading, but tend to stick with mysteries – which I guess is why I get along with Farkle.  Sometimes entertainment today is too predictable,” he commented, making Riley laugh.  “Other than that, I like the warmer weather, spending the day at the beach, and just trying to have fun.”
Riley nodded as the two retreated back into another thread of silence.
“Well, that was fun while it lasted,” David retorted.
“That it was.  I’m sorry; I guess I’m just not up to talking that much tonight – which is usually the opposite of what I usually do.  I have a tendency to ramble.”
David put his hands up. “It’s okay, I get it.  Smackle was trying to help you.  I have an idea – if you want, we can try and get together later on, whether as friends or something more, on our own terms.  Does that sound like something you’d be up to?”
Riley bobbed her head from side to side.  “Maybe.”
“If you do, let her know when and where, and I’ll be there.  If not, it was nice getting to know you.”
“Likewise,” Riley smiled before David disappeared into the crowd.  She took a couple steps onto the balcony and inhaled the crisp December air as she glanced up at the sky.  Despite all the lights, a few stars managed to peek through.
After a moment, Riley heard footsteps behind her.  She turned her head to see Maya standing there.  “How was it?”
Riley shrugged as Maya made her way over to where Riley was standing.  “It went pretty well considering we both felt pretty awkward about the date that wasn’t a date.  We talked for a bit before we decided that if we wanted to try again on our own terms we would.  He seems like a nice guy.”
“Definitely looks the part,” Maya commented as she looked at the group of people out of the corner of her eye.
Riley chuckled as she leaned against the railing.  “He was definitely handsome…”
“So how are you doing, Riles?  I know we haven’t had the chance to talk too much over the past month, but my schedule has been pretty busy.”
She nodded.  “Don’t worry about that.  Life happens and takes away from the more important things,” Riley joked.  “But I’ve been doing alright I guess.  I’ve been trying to move on, and I think tonight helped.  It was what I needed.  Life has dictated that what was in the past needs to stay there, and I have to come to accept that.”
Maya smiled as her mind flashed to that day when she bumped into Lucas on the sidewalk, recalling his distress that was plastered on his face.  “Maybe.  You never know when it may throw you in the opposite direction you think you’re going.”
“Very true.  Anyway, I think I’m going to head home.”
“Are you sure?  There’s only about an hour before the ball drops, and you’ve only been here for around 45 minutes.”
Riley nodded as she looked down at her watch.  “Yeah, I’m sure.  It may not have been too long, but it was what I needed.”
OoOoO
The streets were rather bare, but that was typical this time of night on New Year’s Eve.  They were all at their own parties or in Time Square. Riley shook her head as she headed into her apartment building.  The faint sounds of Barry Manilow’s version of What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve played over the lobby’s speakers.
“What am I doing New Year’s Eve?” Riley asked herself as she headed up the stairs.  “Not much apparently – and that’s okay,” she admitted to herself. A small smile came upon her lips – she was finally ready to take the next step in her life.
She turned down the hallway and headed towards her apartment.  When she rounded the corner, Riley stopped dead in her tracks.  Just when she thought she had moved on, she found herself hanging on another day, another word.  She may have lost her way three years ago, but Riley was finding her way back home.
Her doe eyes met his emerald ones as he stood outside her apartment door.
“Lucas,” she breathed. Her heart pounded against her ribcage, and her mouth ran dry.
Lucas took a step towards her.  “Hey Riley… can we talk?”
A/N: I hope I did okay with Smackle’s character.  I’ve never written her before and I hope I did her justice.  The song this chapter is based on is Broken by Trisha Yearwood – not exactly a classic, but I felt most of the lyrics fit what I wanted Riley to go through.
Next chapter will be Lucas’ POV during this time!  I have an idea of what I want to happen, but if you have any suggestions feel free to let me know.  Also, if you could please let me know what you thought of it (what you liked, didn’t like, what should be improved upon, etc.), it would be greatly appreciated.

AU College Fic. Farkle never figured out how Riley really felt about Lucas, so it never got out. Now she’s turning 21 and the gang decides to go to Las Vegas to celebrate. Sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas.
Rating: M
Pairing: Rucas
Word Count: 3,626
Cross-posted at ff.net
Soundtrack (although not at all organized and subject to edits)
A/N: Please read the a/n because it might be the reason why this is the last chapter you’ll read.
Ok, so first off (and this will help explain what I did and why I did it), the chapter titles.  I always had a vague idea about what I wanted to do for this fic.  As I began to write it, I wanted to figure out exactly how long it was going to be.  I knew that I wanted it to encompass a long weekend, so I knew it wouldn’t be super long, and I knew I wanted it to have some cool chapter titles to tie back to the overall Vegas vibe.  I thought, at the time, that I wouldn’t be able to do 21 chapters, so instead, I came up with something better.  Every chapter (minus chapter one), corresponds to a playing card nickname.  The chapters have gone from Deuces (a nickname for the 2 card) all the way to the Ace card (Aces high, baby!).  I only cheated slightly with chapter ten.  It was originally called Dime, but I went with a ten higher card nickname (TT) because the name was perfect.  A lot of the chapter titles dictated the course of the fic (an example is the hot tub moment in “The Devil’s Bedpost” or how “Time Travel” was comprised of a flashback).  I wanted to challenge myself to stay in those sort of parameters, and honestly, I think that overall, the fic turned out better than I thought it would. Those nicknames really weaved a lot of the story.
Hopefully you’re still reading this because this is the whole point of me telling you about the chapter titles: I didn’t stop with the Ace card.  There is an epilogue, which will be posted tomorrow (Saturday).  It’s the “joker” card and the name of it is “Wildcard”, and trust me when I say that it’s called that for a reason.  So, if you want this fic to be wrapped up nice and tidy, don’t read the epilogue.  If you want to read the full ending I had envisioned for this story, then definitely read the A/N I’m going add before the epilogue begins.
This is the longest a/n I’ve ever done, but if you’re still reading this, thank you.  Thank you for reading this fic, and for humoring me.

                                    Chapter Fourteen: Alas
“I don’t know about you guys, but this has definitely been the best night here,” Lucas told the group as they lounged in the living room.  “Just a few drinks.  Some bowling, some pool…just us…all of us.”
“It’s definitely been more low key,” Farkle agreed.  “So, what’s been your favorite part of the trip?”
Lucas briefly glanced at Riley.  She looked like a vision as she was seated next to Maya on the loveseat.  She seemed completely oblivious to the fact that his eyes were on her as she and Maya laughed at whatever they were talking about.  He smiled softly as he looked back at Farkle.  “Are you asking the group or just me?”
“Everyone,” he clarified as he glanced at the girls.  “Because I figured with you and Riley it would be the obvious…you know…finally getting together.”
When Riley heard her name, she turned her attention to the guys’ conversation.  She glanced at Lucas as his eyes fell to the ground.  She couldn’t be certain, but he seemed a little sheepish as he looked away from her.
“You’re whipped already,” Zay teased as he caught the bashful look on his friend’s face.  He had known Lucas for most of his life and had only seen him act like that twice—both times involved one Riley Matthews.  He sipped on his drink as he tried to think about his favorite part of the trip.  “Mine would probably be…watching Farkle drive the golf cart into the lake earlier today.”
Maya and Riley nearly exploded in laughter.  “Wait,” Maya continued to laugh, “What?”
Zay grinned.  “Oh yeah…you guys missed it.  Farkle thought he had it in reverse, but it was actually in drive, so he went right over the edge and into the lake on the 10th hole.”
Riley covered her mouth with her hand as she giggled at her friend’s mishap.  The mental image of Farkle driving a golf cart into a lake was priceless.  “Oh my God,” she began as she wiped tears from her eyes.  “What happened?”
“We managed to fish it out,” Lucas explained.  “Thankfully the cart wasn’t damaged or anything like that.”
“So, who won,” Maya asked as she wrapped her arms around her suddenly cramped stomach.  She wasn’t sure the last time she laughed so hard.
“I’ll give you one guess,” Zay answered sarcastically before he gestured to Lucas.  “He was Mr. Perfect in middle school and high school.  He’s still perfect…even in college.”
“I thought we didn’t keep track of our score,” Lucas told him.
“I lied.  I was keeping track in the off chance that she,” he waved his hand in Riley’s direction, “got you off your game today because of last night.”
“Hey!” Riley crossed her arms over her chest in mock offense.
“You know what I mean,” Zay chuckled as he playfully winked at Riley.  “How was the spa?”
“Good,” Maya answered.  “It was relaxing…for the most part.”
“For the most part,” Farkle asked.
“The girl talk was…intense,” she elaborated.  “Once that was out of the way, we were able to relax some and have a good afternoon, right Riles?”
The brunette nodded.  “Absolutely.”
“What was your favorite part of the trip, Farkle,” Riley asked him.  She knew that the breakup with Smackle still weighed on him, but she hoped that they were able to get his mind on something else, even if only for a little while.  He seemed so uptight when they first arrived, but he had appeared to have relaxed some over the last few days.
“Honestly?”  He smirked.  “I think it was when Zay, Maya, you, and me were dancing last night.”
Riley laughed.  “When I forced you to?”
He nodded.  “Yeah…ever since Isadora…ever since the breakup, I haven’t been…I haven’t really been myself.  Last night, I was able to let go for a little while…it was nice.  It was nice to be able to laugh with you guys.  It helped me to forget about…everything for awhile.”
“We’re always going to be here for you, Farkle,” Maya assured him.
Riley nodded.  “Yeah, no matter what.  You’re stuck with us…all of us.”
He smiled.  “Yeah.  I want you guys to know that you are the best group of friends I could ever ask for.”  Maybe this trip was the first step in the right direction?  He was finally able to let go for a little while and have fun without thinking about her.  He knew that everyone had been patient with him as he dealt with everything, and for that, he was forever grateful.
“So, why don’t we do this then…” Zay stood up as he face the others.  “No matter what happens.  No matter where we go…what we do…every year, the five of us take a trip somewhere.  It doesn’t have to be here or anything too exotic if we don’t want to.  Just a trip somewhere.  That way, no matter where we end up, we’ll still be in each other’s lives.”
“I like that idea,” Maya told him.
“Me too,” Riley smiled.
“So, let’s do it.” Farkle stood up before he slid his hands into the front pockets of his pants.  He turned to Lucas.  “Lucas?”
“Yeah,” he nodded as he stood up.  “I think it’s a good idea.”
“I only have one question.” Maya looked between Riley and Lucas.  “Where is Zay going to sleep tonight?”
Riley slowly turned her head to Lucas.  When their eyes met, their cheeks turned crimson.
“You know, you don’t have to spend the night with me if you don’t want to…or if you want to take it slow,” Lucas told her the moment she came out of the bathroom in a pair of yoga shorts and a tank top.  His heart fluttered at the sight of her.  He briefly wondered if that feeling would ever go away, but as she walked toward him, he realized that his heart had fluttered every single time she entered a room.  He looked down at the bed as he pulled the covers down.  “Or, if you want, I can take the other bed.”  He knew he was rambling.  He never rambled before.  God, what was she doing to him?  “We don’t have to…just because Maya and Zay…” he looked back at her.  He’d gladly turn into a complete buffoon if it meant that she would always look at him the way she was at that very moment.  An amused smile tugged at the corners of her lips while her eyes seemed to sparkle underneath the glow of the lamp on the nightstand.  He sighed.  “We do what we do.”
She couldn’t help but to be slightly amused by his sudden anxiousness.  She had never seen him so flustered before.  She secretly enjoyed the fact that she had set him on edge for once, since he had always managed to make her act the same way.  “Lucas, if I didn’t want to be in here, I wouldn’t be in here.”  As she closed the space between him, her eyes fell to the bed.  “And once we get back to the city, I’m not sure when we will have another chance to…you know…spend the night together.  With finals and then winter break…I’ll be back at my parents’ for a month and you’ll be back with your parents and…” she blushed as she clasped her hands together.  She slowly looked up at him. “I…I want to be with you…even if we’re just sleeping.”
He dropped the sheet as he turned to her.  As nervous as he was a minute ago, a sense of tranquility suddenly washed over him.  That was his Riley.  She had the power to incite a nervousness he had never known in one moment and then immediately calm him the next.  “Well, I think we’ve already been together longer now than the first time we were boyfriend and girlfriend.”
She laughed as she remembered their afternoon long relationship when they were in middle school.  “Hey, it’s a step in the right direction, right?”
“Absolutely.”  He wrapped his arms around her waist as he buried his head in the crook of her neck.  “I’m glad you’re here.”
“Me too,” she closed her eyes as they held one another for a moment.  She thought for sure that there would be a lot of awkwardness between them after their earlier encounter, but there wasn’t.  If anything, she felt more comfortable around him, and despite his slight nervousness, he seemed to be more comfortable around her as well.  “I’m glad that everyone seems ok with it.”
“Were you that worried about it?”
When they pulled back from one another, Riley turned away from her boyfriend as she slid underneath the covers of Lucas’s bed.  “A little,” she admitted.
Lucas frowned.  “Why?”
“Because of Farkle…and Smackle.”  She looked up at Lucas as he sat down across from her at the foot of the bed.  “They were together…forever…you know?  A-And now, they aren’t.  Have you even seen her since they broke up?”
He sighed.  “No, I haven’t.”  It wasn’t intentional.  He and Smackle had grown to be pretty close friends over the years.  They even went to the same college, but it was as if she had completely disappeared when Farkle and she broke up.  He tried to text her, but she never answered.   “You?”
“Once.  It was…awkward…horrible.  There was this Farkle sized elephant in the room and Maya and I tried so hard to tiptoe around it, but every single time we opened our mouths, we ended up saying something about Farkle.  We didn’t mean to…we thought that we could make it normal.  We thought that we could be friends with both of them, but…it was so…awkward.  Maya and I tried to remain impartial throughout everything, but she broke up with him.  She…she broke his heart and as much as we wanted to stay out of it, we also wanted to protect him.  I think…I think Smackle knew that.”  She paused as she thought back to that horrible afternoon at her mother’s bakery.  “We weren’t mean or anything…and Maya and I thought that…well, I don’t know what we thought.”  She looked down at her hands, which rested in her lap.  “We haven’t…we haven’t hung out…or even spoken since then…and…I don’t want that to happen with us, Lucas.”  She cut her eyes up to him.  “If something happens…if this…if this ends, I don’t want our group to be even more fractured.”  She took a deep breath.  “It’s one reason why I…why I never told you how I felt.”
“Riley…I know that…that this changes everything, but I also know that whatever we have…it’s different than what they had.”  He looked down as he reached for her hand.  “They know that.  They want us to be happy…I think Farkle especially.  He knows that our relationship wasn’t his relationship.  We’ve been friends for a really long time now.  We know what we’re walking into.”
Riley glanced at their joined hands before she looked back up at him.  “Lucas, we were never just friends.”
He ran his thumb over her knuckles as he lowered his eyes to their hands.  “You know…my favorite thing in this world is when you talk to me.”
She furrowed her eyebrows.  “It is?”
He nodded as he looked up at her.  “I hated it when we drifted apart.  It felt like…it felt like part of me was missing.  It felt like the best part of me was missing.  Riley, I know that I loved you before I even really knew what love was.  When you pulled back from me after that party…and I heard you and Maya talking…I think that’s when I realized what love…what losing it really meant.  I don’t…I don’t want to feel like that again.  I don’t want to be incomplete.  I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.  I don’t know where life is going to take us, but I do know that I’m willing to fight everything…fate, time, misunderstanding…just…everything…in order to be with you.”  He took a deep breath.  “I’d do anything for you.”  He glanced down at their hands once more.  “We’re different than Farkle and Smackle…and any other couple we know…because every relationship is different.  This…you and me…I’ve been waiting a lifetime for it.  Now that we’re…starting to explore that…I’m not going to be able to let go that easily.  At the end of it all, I need you, Riley.  It’s that simple and it’s that complicated…not to mention the fact that it’s also that scary.”
Riley swallowed.  “I know that I’ve been running away from this…not just the last few days, but ever since Tombstone and Texas.  I…I feel the same way.  I know that I can’t lose you from my life…so I thought it was safer to hide…even after you and Maya broke up.  I know I pulled away…and I need you to know that…it killed me.  I hated leaving places when you were just showing up.  I hated cancelling plans all together because I knew you were going to be there.  I wanted to see you.  I needed to see you…but knowing that scared me even more.”  She gripped his hand.  “I’ve been able to keep you away because…because I told myself that you didn’t see me like that, but…after that night in the hot tub…after we kissed…I knew…my heart knew that I…I couldn’t run away anymore.  This…instinct that I have to protect my friendships tried to fight it.  I tried to push you away, but…I can’t do it anymore.  I don’t want to do it anymore.  I want to be with you.  I need to be with you.  You’re right…it’s the scariest thing in the world to need another person, but I…I love you.  I’m in love with you…and now that I’ve had a taste of everything I’ve been running away from…I know that I’m willing to fight for it too.  Anything…everything that comes our way.”  She ran her free hand through his hair.  “We really stink at this taking it slow kind of thing.”
He smiled.  “Yeah…but if you think about it…we’ve waited seven years for this.  For some people, that’s taking it painfully slow.”
She considered it for a moment.  “You make a good point.”  She smirked.  “You know…I wonder what my dad is going to say about all of this.”
“I have a feeling I’m going to be losing a lot more shoes,” he laughed.  “At least over winter break anyway.”
“Oh, you think you’re going to sneak into my room without him knowing it?”
He smirked as he leaned in closer to her.  “I’m going to try.”
Riley smiled against his lips as he kissed her.  This felt right.  More than right.  Her hand slid to his neck as she opened her lips against his.  He was rapidly becoming an addiction.
The phone in Lucas’s room blared promptly at 8:00am.  He groaned as he rolled over and picked up the phone.  “Thank you,” he mumbled before he put the hung up the device.  As he rolled back over, he took a moment to look at the angel who slept next to him.  So, yesterday wasn’t a dream?  They were actually a couple now?  He smiled as he wrapped his arms around her once more.  Last night had easily been the best night of sleep he had in ages.  Being able to hold Riley in his arms was more than a dream come true for him.
“What was that,” she murmured half asleep.
“Wake up call,” he answered softly as he kissed her bare shoulder.  He reveled in the feeling of his skin pressed against hers.  He could easily get used to waking up like this every morning.
“What time is it,” she mumbled as she pressed herself against him even more.  The feeling of his skin next to hers felt nothing short of electric.  Couldn’t they have this every morning?  She frowned slightly as she slowly opened her eyes.  No, they couldn’t.  They had to get back to reality today, and that meant spending the night in their separate beds.  Besides, if this was going to work, they couldn’t go 0 to 100 right away.  She wanted to enjoy every single moment of their ‘honeymoon’ period.
He planted another kiss to the back of her neck.  “8am.”
She slowly turned her head toward him.  A lazy smile danced across her features.  “Good morning.”
“Good morning,” he smiled.
“It definitely is,” she softly whispered before she pressed her lips to his.  She sighed as she turned her body to face him.  “How long do you think we have until Zay demands to come in and get this stuff?”
“Don’t worry,” he smiled as he ran his fingers down the length of her arm.  “I packed it all up after you fell asleep last night.  It’s already in the living room.”
Riley chuckled.  “Poor Zay.”  She never wanted to kick the guy out of his own room, but the temptation to have one full night with Lucas was too appealing to turn down.
“Poor Zay nothing,” Lucas insisted before he kissed her again.  “I wasn’t about to let anyone disturb you.”
Her teeth lightly scraped her bottom lip as she looked up at him from underneath her eyelashes.  “You know…you are always free to disturb me…if you want.”
“You aren’t tired of me yet?”
She smiled as she swung one leg over his hip as she straddled him.  “No,” she answered as she leaned down to kiss him.  “We’re just getting started.”
Lucas smiled as he wrapped his arms around her waist.
Riley’s furrowed her eyebrows as she flipped through the movie selection.  She bit her bottom lip when she reached the movie she wanted to watch on their flight to Las Vegas—the movie that she had to stop watching so she could pretend to fall asleep all because she was petrified of sitting next to Lucas.  Was that only four days ago?  She tapped her fingers against the screen as she, once again, debated the selection.
Lucas smiled from his seat behind her.  It was definitely déjà vu, but only this time, he felt a lot more confident as he leaned forward.  “Are you ok?”
“Hmm?”  She turned her head toward him as a half smile slowly formed on her lips.  “Yeah, I’m ok.”
He gestured to her screen.  “I heard that’s a good movie.”
Riley looked back at the screen as she softly chuckled.  “Yeah…yeah.  I’ve heard a lot of good things about it.”
“Do you want to watch it together?  He glanced at Zay.  “I’m sure Zay will switch seats with you…or if you want to sit by the window, I can move to the aisle?”
She slowly turned back to him.  “I feel like we’ve had this conversation before.”
He looked down as he lightly laughed.  “Yeah, we have.  I’m just hoping that…”
“What?”  She could practically hear her heartbeat in her ears as she waited for him to answer.
“That your answer will be different this time.”
Riley glanced at the blonde who slept next to her.  She knew that once they got out of the airport, they would go their separate ways in order to study for finals.  That meant that it would easily be a week before she could see him again.  “I’d love to.”
Lucas couldn’t hide the grin on his face as he watched Riley get up from her seat.  He nudged Zay, who had been completely oblivious to the entire conversation as he had his headphones plugged in and the volume turned up.  “Zay,” he called out as he nudged him a second time.
Zay glared at his friend.  “What,” he asked as he slid his headphones down.
“Can you switch seats with Riley?”
Zay glanced at Riley as she attempted to climb over a practically comatose Maya.  He slowly looked back at his friend.  “Ahhh, I got ya,” he nodded.  “So, is this how it’s going to be from now on?”
Lucas frowned.  “What are you talking about?”
“You two are going to be going out on dates and holding hands and all scared to death.  You’re not going to think anything at all about ditching one of your best friends.”
Lucas furrowed his eyebrows.  “I’m not ditching y--”
“Oh, you abandoned me for her,” he gestured to Riley.
“Zay, you know I’m not abandoning you.”
Zay’s look of complete and utter betrayal quickly morphed into laughter as he stood up.  “Nah, I’m just kidding, man.”  He slapped Lucas on the back before he looked at Riley.  “I’m really happy for you guys.”
Riley smiled as she slid into Zay’s seat.  “Thank you, Zay.”
Lucas looked up at his best friend.  “Thanks, Zay.”
“Just remember this when you name your firstborn, ok?”
Riley and Lucas laughed as they watched him climb over a completely oblivious Maya.  As Riley turned to Lucas, their eyes met. Their laughter slowly faded as they both considered Zay’s last statement.  Could that be something in the future, perhaps?  Kids?  Maybe one day?  Riley laughed nervously as she turned to the screen in front of her.  “So, are you ready to watch this movie again?”
“Well, to be honest, I wasn’t really paying attention to it the first time.”
She frowned.  “Really?”
He nodded.  “Yeah.  You see, I really wanted to watch it with this girl…but she kinda brushed me off.”  He lifted his arm in a silent invitation for Riley to snuggle next to him.
Riley smiled as she curled up next to him.  “Well, it was her loss.”
“Nah,” he decided as he handed her the left ear bud.  “The timing wasn’t right.”
She looked up at him.  “And now?”
He slid the right ear bud into his ear before he looked back at her.  “It’s perfect.”

A/N #1: Here it is Part 1 of the 2-Part Finale
25. Girl Meets Hospital
A/N #2: Although rare, there are injuries that could incapacitate a baseball player.
This chapter also comes with a warning, this chapter contains material that could be sensitive to some readers, it concerns cutting, bullying, as well as thoughts of suicide.
The beginning of the baseball season had come, and Lucas was up at bat, Riley was cheering with the cheerleaders, Zay was on third base, Farkle was calculating the probability of Lucas getting a home run while Smackle asked questions about the game. Maya ignored them all paying more attention to Josh who was watching the game while she told him something in his ear.
The pitcher threw the ball at his face with full force, and before Lucas could duck the ball hit him and knocked him out cold. Riley ran up to him to check on him but he was unconscious, but she kept calling his name while squeezing his hand. She watched as the paramedic took him away, rushing to go with him on the ambulance. Their friends not far behind as Josh drove them all to the hospital while Zay called Lucas’ parents telling them what had happened.
Riley cried in the waiting room, because the doctors said only family at the moment, everyone else couldn’t figure out what happened. Except Zay said to the coach that the pitcher had done it on purpose, the ball had clocked in at over eighty miles per hour straight to Lucas’ face. They ran test on Lucas all afternoon, as his parents showed up, as Riley’s parents came with food for everyone, as Zay’s mom sat next to them telling them everything will be alright. Riley just kept on crying.
When Lucas woke up he was in his bed at home, but something felt different, his memories didn’t match what he saw. There was no picture of Riley and him at Coney Island from the summer before, it usually sat on his nightstand, there was nothing from his time at John Quincy, his trophies were labeled for a different school. There were no traces of his regular life and it seemed like he had been put in a different world. Farkle would tell him that alternate universes didn’t exist and that he should go back to sleep. When he reached for his phone, the model was different but the password was the same, Riley’s birthday, when he unlocked it all of the pictures were different. He was in a football uniform and not a baseball one, he was wearing a uniform for Thomas Jefferson High, Abigail Adams’ rival school.
“What’s happening?” he wondered pulling up his texts and seeing a multitude of girls asking for dates, but no messages from his friends.
“Lucas are you awake?” his father called. “I know you took a hit yesterday at the game but you can’t stay in bed all day.”
His door opened and his father walked in, for some reason he looked different, normally his father would have a hard edge to his voice from when he had been expelled, Riley had softened him a bit and they had gotten into a normal relationship. But the man in front of him looked like a completely different person.
“Ah you’re awake,” he said before sitting at the edge of the bed. “You should get ready for school.”
Lucas only nodded, he didn’t know what to say, something felt off and he couldn’t place his finger on the problem. It was Friday, or at least that’s what his phone said, which means they had a game the night before. He got up and went through the motions of getting ready, he said good morning to his mother only to see a middle schooler with her. He had a sister, and he didn’t know it, the girl had the same eyes as his but where his hair was more mixed brown and blonde, this girl’s hair was pure blonde.
“What’s up bro?” she said looking at him like he was staring too long.
Instead of saying anything he grabbed a banana to make his mother think like he was trying, grabbed his backpack and rushed out the door. His school ID was for Thomas Jefferson, but he went to the one place he had always went to in the morning to grab a muffin, but Topanga’s wasn’t there. Instead he was faced with a fast food restaurant that wasn’t open yet, so he walked on toward Abigail Adams hoping to find Riley, or Maya, or Farkle, hell Smackle would do but as he stood there watching the students all he saw were unfamiliar faces.
He had almost missed her, he wouldn’t have noticed if not for the fact that her hair still looked the same, and her face was a beautiful as ever, but she was alone, no Maya, no Farkle, she was dressed in black and had more make-up on than he had ever seen. Someone knocked into her and she lashed out at the person, a boy stood not too far from her, he looked just like her but taller, his head as curly as Mr. Matthews but lighter than Auggie’s. He was yelling at her for being rude but Riley only pushed him away and walked into the school.
He walked off towards where Thomas Jefferson was completely shocked, not knowing what he should do. Once inside, people joked with him as he went to his classes, he was popular at this school because he was the star quarterback and team captain. He was asked out by several girls but turned them all down and just kept going through the motions of his day. His teammates invited him to a party on Saturday, and he said yes only to get them to shut up. Everyone just thought he was in one of his moods, but they still pestered him throughout the day.
When school was over he was glad, he couldn’t stand the way everyone had treated him like he was everything in the world. He missed Zay cracking jokes, Smackle flirting with him only to make Farkle jealous, Maya pushing his buttons, and most of all he missed his sunshine, he missed Riley, his Riley and not the cussing dark girl he had seen. He had checked his phone several times, but Zay’s number wasn’t there, and when he had called Zay’s New York number a woman answered, and Zay’s Texas number was disconnected.
Wandering around he found himself in the library where he had told Riley that he wanted to be a veterinarian. He sat there hoping that the whole day was some elaborate scheme but it hadn’t been and now he was in a life he didn’t know anything about. He looked around the room and noticed that in a far off corner was a familiar orange turtleneck and a head of blonde hair.
“Farkle,” he said out loud, the librarian shushed him while Farkle looked at him like he had grown a third head. Lucas walked over as fast as he could sitting next to the genius, who was wearing an Einstein Academy uniform instead of his now signature boy band look.
“Do I know you?” Farkle asked looking at Lucas who was now sitting so close.
“Lucas Friar,” he said hoping to have some form of normalcy instead the genius started to pack up.
“You’re that football player aren’t you,” he said as he stowed away the last of his things. “We definitely don’t know one another.”
Lucas was trying to figure out how to gain his best friend’s attention when he just started talking without thinking. “Have you ever woken up and thought that everything was wrong, like nothing makes sense?”
“No,” he said as he tried to get up but Lucas pulled him back down.
“Listen to me for a minute please,” Lucas said his eyes pleading with him. “I woke up this morning and everything was wrong, you, Maya, Zay, Smackle, Cassie, and my Riley weren’t in my life, I don’t know what to do.”
“Lucas, I don’t know you,” he said looking at him confused.
“I just want to know what happened, all I remember was being at a baseball game, Riley was cheering me on, and you were calculating the probabilities of a homerun with Smackle… I got hit in the face with a baseball and the next thing I knew I was in the wrong place, even though it’s the same place. Everything I knew never existed.”
Farkle looked at him like he had grown a third head before shaking his head and standing up. “Come on lets go to my house to talk, the librarian is giving us a dirty look.”
Lucas followed feeling like his world was crashing down around him, when they reached Farkle’s almost everything was the same, except Maya’s bedroom wasn’t there.
“The train will be here in a minute,” Lucas said and Farkle looked at him.
“How do you know that?”
“I used to hang out here, with you and the girls, Zay would be playing that zombie game with Riley, with you and Smackle would do some weird experiment over there, I would play golf, while Maya drew something.”
“You really aren’t from here,” Farkle said looking around. “No one has ever been in this room, hell no one really remembers Maya, she moved away in the seventh grade.”
“They were your wives then,” Lucas sighed as he dropped down onto the couch. The train zoomed by only stopping for a moment to as the conductor asked Farkle a question before moving on. “Where is my normal life?”
“I don’t know,’ Farkle said as he sat down across from him. “I do know that a lot of things changed in seventh grade.”
“Can you tell me what happened?”
“Well, Riley started acting more and more like Maya in the seventh grade, then Maya and her mother moved to Arkansas to be closer to their family. Her mother gave up on acting because she realized it was causing her to miss her daughter growing up.”
“So she didn’t remarry?”
“Who Maya’s mom?”
“Yeah, where I’m from she married Shawn Hunter, and he adopted Maya.”
“No, actually she was a widow, her husband had died when Maya was little, and she decided that she needed to try and live her dream because life was too short. Except in the end it was causing Maya to act out because she never grieved for her father.”
“What about Riley? She was with this guy earlier, but he looked like her so I’m guess that either Auggie was born first or something.”
“No, that’s her brother Elliot, he’s two years older than her, he’s a senior at Abigail Adams, he’s their star everything, top student, athlete, debate club, student body president. Riley’s the middle child but her brothers kind of over shadowed her over the years, so she became like Maya and when Maya left she became worse. We all stopped being friends around the same time and I transferred to Einstein Academy. I haven’t talked to them since.”
Lucas couldn’t believe it, “This is too much for me.”
“I know, it’s weird, there’s no scientific explanation for any of this, but if what you say is true then there’s a world out there where Riley is a different person.”
“We all are,” he said frowning. “I have a sister that I don’t know, and the kids at school worship me, but for some reason I feel like some of them are on edge around me.”
“Well you’re kind of a bully,” Farkle said. “I know some kids who go to school with you and well they’re all afraid of you.”
“But that’s not me? I guess without Riley I’m not the best person am I?”
“Can you tell me? You know about your life?”
Lucas nodded and slowly told him about his life, the real life he lead where he went to the same school as all of them. Riley falling on his lap the first day of seventh grade, Farkle’s transformation in eighth grade, Maya’s constant name calling, even how Zay came to New York, and how Smackle joined them in high school. “You’re dating her you know, Smackle.”
“But we wouldn’t match, the probability of us being together is…”
“Farkle stop and think, you and Smackle were made for each other, you always said that like forces repel but the two of you aren’t alike at all, you just need to open your eyes to that.”
They talked for a while longer, Lucas sent a message to his mother that he was going to stay with a friend. He wanted a chance to figure it all out and Farkle was the best person to help him. The two of them looked over websites, social media, anything to try and jog his memory, but nothing worked. Lucas was stuck there and he didn’t know how to get back to where his life was as close to perfect as he could have asked for.
“Maybe you need to fix somethings for Lucas here?” Farkle suggested later that night.
“What like he needs to stop being a complete douche, and date Riley?”
“Riley might be the one thing that would bring this all together, maybe you’re here to fix what went wrong. Which means you need to learn as much as you can about the part of you that lives here.”
“But how?”
“Well what did you learn from going to school?”
“Everyone liked me, except the people who weren’t popular, all the girls asked me out, but according to my teammates I don’t like any of them so it gave me this rep as a bad boy who thinks no one is good enough for him.”
“Okay, so why wouldn’t the most popular guy in school date just anyone? Look through your phone, not the messages but the pictures. There’s something there.”
Lucas pulled out his phone and started going through the pictures like Farkle said, there were pictures with his teammates, and some girls, pictures from parties, and a folder labeled Her he opened it and saw nothing but pictures of Riley, all dating back to that day on the subway when she fell on his lap, but from the looks of the photos she had never turned around and saw him. He had ended up at a different school instead of John Quincy, but there were still pictures and pictures of Riley. From parties, to games where their schools played against one another, she was there but she didn’t look the same. As the pictures went on she wore darker clothes, and people weren’t around her. Even in this world Riley was his everything even if she didn’t know it.
“Wow, talk about stalker,” Farkle said. “I guess the best thing to do is show up at that party tomorrow, because most likely she’s going to be there.”
“She really is the center of my whole word,” he said, thinking of how she made him a better person, but without Maya, or Farkle, or even him Riley wasn’t the same person.
The two of them went to sleep soon after, and when Lucas woke up the next day and was still in Farkle’s room he knew that nothing had changed. He wasn’t home, he wasn’t in his New York, but if Farkle was right, Riley was the answer to everything. The two of them worked on a plan for him to get Riley, but they knew it was going to be hard. When they finished Lucas went home and changed his clothes for the party, saying a quick goodbye to his family as he rushed out the door.
Riley sat in the waiting room, her heart pounding in her chest as everyone she knew came in and out, the doctor had told him that the ball had reached nearly 100 mile per hour when it hit Lucas, and at that rate injury was high, especially since it hit him when he wasn’t looking. They were checking for injury to see if he had a concussion, a clot in his head or even if it had blown his pupil. For all this to happen he needed to be sedated and most likely wouldn’t be awake until the next day. His parents stayed nearby, but Riley wouldn’t move from where they had wheeled him in. Baseball wasn’t supposed to be as rough as any other sport but there were still sever injuries and it frightened her.
She kept replaying the moment in her mind, all the other cheerleaders were pumping up the crowd but she had turned around the moment he went up to bat. She was cheering him on because she wanted him to know she was there, but the pitcher had thrown a fastball when Lucas had looked down, his head only turned to meet the ball face to face. Watching him fall to the ground, as Farkle and Zay ran towards him to check if he was alright had hurt as much as if the ball had hit her. She couldn’t move, as the referees walked up, as his family walked towards them. Everything had moved so slowly, but then she felt her heart beating and her feet moving forward, running towards him. Calling his name and getting no answer, she got on the ambulance on instinct. Watching them hook him up onto the machines, checking his eye, his head, she squeezed his hand to let him know she was there.
Even with everyone telling her it was going to be alright hours later, she couldn’t get the image of Lucas unconscious on the gurney. Her cheerleading uniform still on her, she didn’t want to move afraid that if she did everything that could go wrong would. In that moment her only concern was the boy on the subway who had changed her life in so many ways, and she never got the chance to tell him how much she loved him.
The party was in full swing when he got there, all the football players greeted him with pats on the shoulder but he only had one goal, Riley. It took him a while to find her, she was in a corner of the room sipping on something inside of a red solo cup ignoring the rest of the room. Her brother was on the other side of the room talking with some girl, so Lucas took a chance and walked over to Riley.
“Hey,” he said but she rolled her eyes and turned the other way. This Riley didn’t do the Hi, Hey, Hi, that his Riley did. “Can we talk?” he asked as loud as he could without shouting.
“Why the hell would I talk to you?” she said before walking out the backdoor.
“Riley we need to talk,” he said trying to catch up to her through the crowd of people. “Please.”
He knew that the Lucas of this world liked Riley, but he didn’t say anything to her, he was content with watching her from afar. He grabbed her arm and pulled her out the side gate towards the street.
“Let go of me,” she said pulling her arm trying to get away.
“We need to talk,” he said as they reached a park and he sat her down on the swings. “This is important.”
“Right, like the big bad popular football player had anything to say that would explain him dragging a girl out of a party and to an isolated park.”
“I love you,” he said trying to get her attention. He felt bad for the Lucas from this world because he blurted out this secret crush without thinking. He hoped that the memories would be there when the guy came back, but he wanted his Riley, and he knew he loved her more than anything even if he didn’t tell her, even though he should have.
Riley laughed at him and then her face turned serious. “I don’t play games big boy, now leave me the hell alone.”
“Riley please,” he said. “What do I have to do to get you to understand that I telling the truth?”
She ignored him and kept walking away. The only thing he could hope at that moment was that Riley was still the same girl who left her bay window unlocked. He rushed towards her place, the apartment was still the same, but there were no flowers on the fire escape, no sign of the old Riley. There was a light on and she sat there looking out, so he knew he was in the right place, so he climbed the ladder and walked up to her floor trying not to make too much noise. Her window was open letting the spring air into her room but when he saw inside it wasn’t the same.
The room which had been bright and airy, with blue and purple everywhere, was black and red, from where he was all he saw was the small things that had meant that somewhere in there was the old Riley. His Riley. A purple cat in the corner, Berry the Bear Bear on the chair, and Riley’s desk in the corner near the door. The brunette sitting there, it took him a moment to realize that she had pulled her sleeve up, her arm covered in cut after cut. She had pulled out a blade and was about to cut herself again when he burst through the window and took it away from her.
“Stop,” he said as he threw it across the room. “Don’t do it.”
“What the hell are you doing here?” she screamed and he wondered if anyone would hear her. “Get the fuck out.”
“No,” he said pulling her close. “You can’t do this to yourself… Riley you can’t hurt yourself.”
“No one will care,” she said yelling at him as she pulled away and walked towards where the blade landed. He grabbed her again and pulled her close. “Stop it,” she yelled. “You don’t even know me.”
“I know you like cuddle bunnies, but you don’t tell anyone anymore because they would make fun of you. I know Berry the Bear Bear is your favorite childhood toy because your parents gave it to you before your brother Auggie was born, when you were home sick. I know Maya is your best friend in the world, and I don’t understand why she’s not here to stop this,” Riley started crying in his arms as he spoke. “You love purple cats, and you think you don’t have a talent while everyone else is good at something, even though I know you love to write about everything.”
“What are you a stalker,” she said as she sniffled, her body shaking in his arms.
“No… Well I don’t think so, but I do know that for some reason I can’t seem to date anyone else, and I’m a total jerk to everyone, but your face is all I want to see in the morning.”
“Oh please, you’re just saying that because my brother is your rival,” she said but he knew her voice wasn’t as cut throat as before. “No one cares about me.”
“Are you sure?”
“My parents praise my brothers but don’t say anything nice to me, they’ll make sarcastic remarks like how my brother is the best student but I’m good at sleeping. I have a perfect GPA, but my little brother is a prodigy. No one cares about Riley Matthews, I shouldn’t exist, hell my parents liked Maya better than me when she was still in New York, they praised her for being an Amazon Warrior but I was just the klutzy girl who tripped all over school.”
“That’s not who you are to me,” he said as he took her towards the bay window. “To me you’re a bright spot in my day, you are serious but you want the best for everyone, when you smile it’s like the sun is shining and my heart skips a beat.”
“Lucas you don’t know me,” she said but it was almost a whisper.
“I could prove to you that your life is worth something,” he said before he kissed her on the forehead. “People care, you just have to let go of the sadness and let them into your heart.”
They didn’t talk for a while, they just sat there in each other’s arms, for some reason it felt as if she was using him as an anchor, to keep her grounded to something. This Riley was falling apart, and he couldn’t understand why no one saw it.
At around midnight he realized that she had fallen asleep in his arms, so he scooped her up and tucked her into her bed. He turned to leave when he realized that she had grabbed his arm.
“Don’t leave,” she said in a quiet voice. Normally her father kicked him out around nine, but neither one of her parents came in to check on her at all.
“Where’s everyone?” he asked curious to know what was different about this version of the Matthews.
“Auggie’s probably sleeping, my parents are at some party they left a babysitter here for Auggie, I came in and just went straight to my room, and Elliot of course was at the party.”
“Do you parents check in with you before bed?”
She shook her head, “Not since Maya left,” she said her voice tired.
“What do they do?” he asked curious to see if they were the same people he knew, because for some reason something wasn’t right if they let her get to the point where she was cutting herself.
“My mom’s a lawyer, she’s the head of the firm that’s number one on Wall Street, my dad is a banker, and he works for one of the big ones, although I usually forget which one.”
That’s how he knew that everything was different, Mr. Matthews wasn’t their teacher, and Mrs. Matthews wasn’t defending the little guy. The café didn’t exist, and Riley had a brother who was the best at everything to the point where he overshadowed his sister. Maybe he needed to fix both himself and Riley before it was too late.
They talked about silly things for hours after that, and Lucas knew she was fighting to stay awake. Riley still loved cuddle bunnies, and unicorns, but her life had taken a dramatic turn when she started high school. After being bullied in middle school she had closed herself off, but the bullies had followed only now they had crushes on her brother. She didn’t make any friends because all of the girls all wanted to get close to Elliot, forgetting that she was there. When she didn’t do what they said they would push her into the bathroom stall and throw water on her until she was soaked through. They would spread rumors about her throughout the school, about how easy she was but they also said that because of that she had an STD that changed depending on the week or month.
They fell asleep next to each other after talking for what seemed like hours. When they woke up hours later, he could tell that Riley felt shy about him being there, he knew that it had something to do with what he had seen. He needed to know the why’s of what was happening in this world, and he needed to do it fast because he didn’t know how long he had here.
“Can I ask you something,” he said sitting up on her bed. “Why do you cut yourself? I know you have bullies and the school worships your brother, but why would you do that?”
“Some days, I think it’s because,” she hesitates looking down at her hands, she pulls down the sleeves of her black sweater. “It’s because I keep trying to prepare myself for eventually getting to the point where I want to die.”
Her voice was barely a whisper but he had heard her loud and clear and it hurt him to hear her say those words. This was Riley, regardless of whether or not this was his life, she was meant for so much more than what she doing in that moment. Instead of saying something, he pulled her into a hug and held her there for what seemed like forever. He felt as her body started shaking, as she started crying in his arms. This is something she was missing and he hoped that they would be able to move forward together. He hoped that the version of him in this world would protect her at all cost.

Reality High
- One Shot -
Summary: The clique six feature on a reality television series that follows them around school. Exciting at first but Riley quickly realises that reality TV might not always be real.
Word Count: 6141 (Haven't written a one shot in a while so here’s a long one!)

“Riley, hurry!” Maya yells from the comfort of her friends sofa, “It’s starting!” “I’m coming!” Riley shouts back from the kitchen. The brunette bolts over with two cans of soda in hand.
The two best friends watch the season finale of their favourite reality tv show, ‘Reality High’. Each season has the same layout; it follows a number of students from the beginning of the year to the end of the year but the only difference being, when a new season begins the show would follow a new set of students in a new school and a new city. In it’s third season - the one the girls sit and watch now - it’s set somewhere in LA.
The two soon to be juniors sit with their eyes glued to the screen hanging off every bit of drama as it concludes their favourite season to date. When the show wraps up the girls are on the brink of tears watching their favourite of the students - A girl name Miranda - graduating.
After the end credits roll, Riley and Maya are about to enter a loud discussion about their thoughts on the finale when a clip pops up advertising the entry period for season four.
“Did that just say Abigail Adams High?” Riley’s mouth is agape as she stares at the television in disbelief.
“No way!” Maya springs up from the sofa in excitement, “Season four is being filmed at out high school?”
Riley squeals, “Maybe we’ll know the kids on the show!”
“Maybe we’ll be the kids on the show!” Maya jokes but secretly wishes for it to be true.
It’s the following day that the principal formally addresses the excitement buzzing through the school. He outlines how the audition process will take place. On the last day of the school year - as an incentive to show up - the producers will be filming audition tapes for those who wish to participate where they’ll take the summer to filter through applicants and choose the winners.
Ever since the news broke it was all anyone was talking about. The majority of students were all dying for a place on the show.
“So is anyone going to sign up to audition?” It’s Riley who poses the question that afternoon in the bakery.
“Why bother?” Zay laughs, “They only ever feature seniors.”
“Not true,” Maya chimes in, “In season two they had two students from each year level.”
“Why would you want to be on it anyway?” Lucas speaks up, “It’s all just manufactured television.”
Farkle lets out a snort in agreement and Smackle points out she’s too smart for the show. Riley rebuts with the fact that they all watch the show, wether they were too smart for it or not.
By the looks of it Riley and Maya were going to be the only ones in their friend circle to sign up. That was until Riley convinced Lucas it could be fun and with Lucas on board it didn’t take much convincing for Zay to join the party. It seemed that only the two geniuses were opting out of auditioning.
It’s two days before the auditions when Riley’s Uncle Josh comes barrelling through their apartment door with some exciting news of his own. After two years at NYU Josh got accepted into his dream school, the New York Film Academy in which he transferred his junior year. It’s at this school that he was given the opportunity to sign up for a contest; the prize being an assisting position to an executive producer of a national television series. He won the contest and as it turned out the television series he would be affiliated with was Reality High.
The end of the week arrives quickly and Riley’s nerves bubbled inside her the closer she got to auditioning but she manages to get through it without passing out or embarrassing herself completely.
The hype surrounding the upcoming season of Reality High dies down a few weeks into everyones summer vacation. That was until Riley received the phone call. It was the producer of the show wishing to see Riley for the second round of the auditioning process. So excited over the phone call Riley immediately rings her best friend to share the good news but before she could get a word in Maya was screaming down the phone about her own phone call with the producer.
It was later revealed that all of her friends got the same call. Which came as a surprise to Riley, not that she didn’t believe they were worthy of spots on the show but because she didn’t think two of them even auditioned. It’s during the second round of the audition process that they learn the producers new angle for season four was to follow a group of friends rather than random students.
That was the beginning for them. Things moved quickly after that second round. Each of the six friends were put under contract for the show and went into various meetings. About a two weeks before school is due to start camera crews came to each of the high schoolers apartments to film their ‘get to know me’ packages.
The way the show worked was pretty simple, the camera crew would follow each of the chosen students around school, a couple hours after school and selected times on the weekend. To make the show as ‘authentic’ as possible there is only a two week lag between episodes aired and real time.
(I know this is impractical for how TV actually works but lets pretend it’s real. I need the immediate response to how people react to the show to see how Riley’s reacts to their reactions etc.)
The first day of the new school year approaches quickly and everyone had heard the news of the six juniors scoring positions on the show.
Riley was half expecting the extra attention from her peers but to the extent she received she wasn’t prepared. Riley likes everyone but not everyone likes Riley and she knew that but come first day of school it seems as though everyone wanted to be her best friend.
At first the cameras were hard to get used to. The producer had to keep reminding the teens to try and avoid looking directly at it when they were going about their business. After a few days it normalised for them.
The first week acts as an introduction episode. The six friends gather in the Matthews living room to watch it air. It opens with a clip of their school. The halls are deserted so Riley figures this must have been filmed prior to school commencing that year. It segways into each of the students get to know me packages. Each clip pauses on a cute or quirky picture of each high schooler with their name and a byline like ‘The Jokester’ etc. None of which were offensive or bad but Riley would later learn that was the producers branding each of them.
Once the episode wraps up the teens are left chattering excitedly amongst themselves and it’s Maya whom first points out that her social media was blowing up. Everyone else checks their phones and find the same thing happening to them.
As the first few weeks pass things are definitely not normal for the teens but they were all certainly loving the attention the show brought them. Each of them felt special and were overall pleased with how the episodes were turning out. That and the small sum of money they’re paid for participating was nothing to complain about.
The producers were loving every bit of it as well. The whole ‘history lesson applied to each of their lives’ bit was something they couldn’t have written better themselves. As it’s their job to monitor ratings etc. the producers are very in the know when it comes to how their viewers are receiving each episode. They’re constantly scouring hashtags about the show on social media. Gathering intel on how to better the show etc. Overall the response to the new angle was positive. The viewers seemed to love the mismatched group of friends.
It’s after six episodes, when they’re eight weeks into filming that Riley steps back from the hype and looks at how the show is affecting her friends. Each of them seemed more confident which wasn’t a bad thing by any means but Riley had an off feeling brewing inside her. A feeling she chooses to keep to herself for the time being.
Another few weeks pass and viewers are loving Riley’s goofiness and the way she obsesses over little things. They love Lucas because of his loyal leader nature - that and he is f i n e - Zay never failed to have the viewers in fits of laughter with his witty comebacks, The geniuses seemed to divide the audience, half of them didn’t understand their quirky behaviour and saw their intellect as braggy and pretentious but the other half, maybe more than half loved their dry honesty when it came to their friends. Maya was probably the crowd favourite, her pretty girl look was something that captured the audience and her ‘I don’t care’ attitude won them over completely.
As for Riley’s observations of her friends she obviously notices how being on the show is affecting them in social situations. Random people would recognise them wherever they went which was exciting at first but then it started to become a little bit of a hassle. When the cameras were around they had people to make sure filming wasn’t interrupted by the casual viewer but when the cameras weren't there they were free gain. Every study session or movie date was interrupted. Riley didn’t hold it against anyone, if anything she was extremely flattered that people wanted to meet her but it still weighed on her a little. More than it did anyone else's. Riley would never say it aloud but she had a feeling her friends wanted to be spotted. She’d notices them posting more pictures and posts about where they were which she knew was encouraged by the producers to create hype around them but again that off feeling inside her stirs.
It’s soon after this that things start to blow up for Riley and not in the good way. For the most part the filming of the show felt natural for Riley. Yes, they’d give certain queues for the six friends and suggestive topics to discuss etc. but it didn’t feel too fake for Riley. That’s why Riley misinterpreted the genuine nature of the tenth episode aired.
The show had been on a two week hiatus over Thanksgiving. Snippets were still filmed and added into the following weeks episode, but for the most part they had a break from daily camera life. Even these little snippets they filmed were optional to take part in, they weren't obligated in the contract to film over school breaks. Riley took this opportunity to recoup her thoughts and rest. Something about the constant attention and how aware she was that everyone was watching her exhausted Riley. So the brunette takes her week off school and opts out of any filming.
After Riley returned to school feeling refreshed, some of the original excitement the show brought her creeps back in when they begin filming again. At the end of this week that the clique six gather to watch the new episode like they had every week. It’s only two minutes in that the mood amongst the group changes completely.
The episode opened with some fluff piece about friends, family and thanksgiving. One that they subtly worked in the absence of Riley as the others had all opted to film. But it wasn’t just a simple “Riley is away for thanksgiving” explanation. No, it had been manipulated to look like Riley was avoiding her friends during the break or it at least implied that was the nature of her absence.
The six friends watching remain quiet, partly because they were shocked. As the episode unfolds more it seems the manipulation didn’t end there. It looked as though Riley was still being distant from her friends even after returning to school. This is all achieved with cheap editing tricks and they insinuated that the reasoning behind this had to do with relationship trouble. To make it worse they implied there was a triangle forming between Riley, Maya and Lucas. A simple Ha Hurr between friends was showed in a way that looked like Riley reacted sadly to it.
The episode wraps up and the entire room is tense. Isadora, Farkle and Zay quickly make excuses to bail and Riley is left quietly shocked on the sofa.
“Riley, that obviously wasn’t what it looked like,” Maya says quickly.
“I know.” Riley gives a slight nod.
“I have no idea why they’d try to make out like Maya and I like each other...” Lucas frowns.
“It’s okay,” Riley says softly.
“No it’s not,” Maya frowns too. “You’re upset.”
“It’s fine.” Riley says more firmly.
It took a bit of persisting but Riley manages to get her boyfriend and best friend to leave without discussing it in-depth.
Riley retreats to her room and takes her laptop to bed with her. Every single thing inside her said not to do it but curiosity won out in the end as she clicks on the hashtag surrounding their show. Riley spends an hour scrolling through countless comments about her and her relationship with Lucas or more so her ‘triangle’ with the addition of Maya. It quite literally devastated Riley to read everyone favouring Maya and Lucas’ relationship over her own. It’s after she feels herself being unable to hold back tears anymore that she closes her computer.
When they return to school on Monday Riley feels all eyes on her but this was different to people being interested in her position on the show. Riley knew these glances came out of curiosity regarding her apparent ‘triangle’. Lucas and Maya were undoubtedly awkward around each other and they both insisted on making things right with Riley but she continues to assure them that she’s alright and she knows there is nothing going on between them. Still her heart is weighed down by the negativity being sent in on her social media.
It’s when the episode revolving around that week airs that Riley finally cracks. Maya and Lucas’ awkward behaviour around one another was portrayed as suspicious and Riley’s wandering mind about the whole thing provided perfect material for them to edit as a broken heart. Riley gets up and leaves mid episode. Both Lucas and Maya chase after her.
By the time they get upstairs to Riley’s room she’s already crying in the bay window. Lucas and Maya trip over each others words as they try and spit out apologies and explanations to her. Both stressing how they’re not intreseted in one another romantically.
“Riley, you have to know that’s not real.” Lucas holds her gaze.
“Of course I do but does that make it hurt any less to see it portrayed that way?” Riley wipes at her damp cheeks.
“I’m so sorry,” Maya tears up seeing her friend so upset, “We can go talk to Mick [the executive producer] tomorrow and sort out this mess.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Riley chokes on her tears, “Everyone already sees it a certain way. Have you read what they’re posting online lately?”
“No, I try not to check the tags, people can post some nasty things...” Lucas explains.
“Yeah well I did,” Riley says, “And they’re starting a Team Riley or Team Maya hashtag war.”
“What?” Maya frowns.
“Yeah and you’re winning,” Riley snaps at her best friend.
“What?” Maya asks more shocked than before.
“I just want to be left alone,” Riley stands up from the bay window and moves over to her bed, “Can you please leave?”
“Riley-” Lucas starts but Riley cuts him off.
“Please?” Riley asks desperately. The two other teens give in and leave her alone.
Once school commences again on Monday - after two days of silence from Riley - they all return to school. Both Lucas and Maya spring on their mutual interest before the camera crew arrive at school.
“We’ve contacted Mick and he’s set up a meeting for us before homeroom,” Maya explains quickly.
“I promise we’re going to sort this all out, Riley,” Lucas gives her a small smile.
“Okay.” Riley wears a weak and unconvincing smile as the three of them make their way to the auditorium where Mick has a temporary office set up for the duration of the filming. He doesn’t spend everyday there, as he has a lot to deal with but he does have a very hands on approach when it comes to this show - hence the allocated spot for him that’s close to all the action.
It takes only a matter of minutes for Mick to brainwash both Lucas and Maya from angry to compliant. They open with obvious distaste to the way they were being ported and Mick spins the situation to a positive.
“Approaching thanksgiving we were coming to the part of the show where viewers start to cut in and out of watching. It’s the time of any season where we have to step things up a notch.” Mick explains, “That’s where we came up with the triangle idea. Nothing picks up ratings like two best friends fighting over the same boy.”
“But we’re not fighting over the same boy.” Maya says firmly.
“Maybe not but we’ve been picking up on a buzz surrounding you and Lucas, so it’s our job to explore that further.”
“Why?” Lucas asks, “Riley’s my girlfriend.”
“And no one is saying that has to change,” Mick sits back in his seat with arms folded against his chest. “But you can’t deny chemistry.”
Riley sinks into her seat. This was like the cutest couple yearbook revelation only on a nation wide scale.
“So you want us to play the part?” Maya is confused.
“Exactly,” Mick leans forward. “Throw in a few weeks worth of confusion between the three of you and we’ll work the whole ‘who’s it going to be?’ angle. Maybe take a poll and make the viewers think they have a say in who Lucas chooses and then we can circle back to Riley and Lucas. These last few weeks have been the highest rated episodes of any season to date. This kind of exposure is amazing for kids your age. Each of you is almost guaranteed college scholarship offers after this.”
“Really?” Maya fails to hide a smile.
“Yes.” Mick nods.
“So you want us to actually pretend to be in a triangle?” Riley speaks up for the first time since sitting down.
“Exactly,” Mick grins, “It’s better that you’re all aware and on board with the plan. That way it eliminates any real tension between you.”
“So Lucas and I wouldn’t actually have to date?” Maya questions.
“Maya?” Riley asks in shock that she was considering it.
“What?” Maya asks defensively. “Imagine if an art school is willing to give me a scholarship..”
“Why don’t I give you three kids sometime to talk this over and we can meet up again after school to talk about our next move.” Mick rises from his seat and leaves the three alone.
“We don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with,” Lucas says softly but Riley was already too hurt.
“Don’t you get it?” Riley snaps, “It doesn’t matter if we agree or not they’re going to manipulate the show any way they want!”
“Doesn’t that make it easier to agree to faking it then?” Maya asks. “Besides, he said that it would only be for a few episodes and then they’d go for the fairytale ending for you and Lucas.”
“I already lived through months of a real triangle, now you’re asking me to do it again for the world to see?” Riley asks.
“It’s just fake Riley,” Lucas says softly.
“Not to me it isn’t.” Riley is in a state of disbelief that they were even entertaining the idea of being compliant.
“This could be huge for us, Riles..” Maya gives her a small smile.
“I wish I never applied for this stupid show,” Riley is on the verge of tears as she storms out of the room.
Riley hides away in the bathroom as she saw the cameras preparing to begin filming. It’s inside one of the stalls that Riley calls her mother. Over the weekend after Riley sent away Maya and Lucas she talked - or more accurately, cried - things over with her mom. Topanga was immediately upset on her daughters behalf but Riley was quick to convince her mom to let her handle things before she gets her lawyer mom involved. Hence why Riley turned up to the meeting with Mick alone. It’s after this meeting that Riley decides she wants out and Topanga is there within the hour.
During first period the six reality television stars are called for a non filmed meeting with Mick. Topanga is already standing by with folded arms and a mean look on her face. Josh was also present, as Mick’s assistant and he’d heard from him about the proposal he offered the teens and was just as disgusted as Riley and Topanga.
Everyone but Riley was confused about the nature of the meeting. She knew why they were there, she initiated it but the other teens weren’t expecting to be called in. Even Lucas and Maya thought they weren't reconvening until that afternoon.
Topanga is the first to address everyone, “We’re here because Riley wants off the show.”
Surprise stirs amongst the teens. Mick is looking smug behind his desk. Like he knows how this is all going to play out already.
“Now Riley is legally bound to the show by contract,” Topanga explains, “The only way out of it is if all of you refuse to participate.”
“What?” Zay says what everyone was thinking.
Riley awkwardly sits in her seat wishing the ground would swallow her whole.
“Can’t Riley be released from her contract if we all agree to continue filming?” Maya thinks she’s offering up a solution that worked for everyone. Since they all enjoyed the hype the show brought them.
“Maya!” Topanga scowls out of shock.
“Mrs. Matthews if Riley doesn’t want to be on the show why should we all have to give it up?” Farkle asks sheepishly.
“If Riley’s not on the show anymore that means that she won't be able to be in any of your classes, nor will she be able to take part in any of your after school hang outs.” Topanga knew she was dealing with teenagers but still she couldn’t hide her disgust in them.
Riley again reaches her breaking point due to the lack of support from her so called friends and runs out of the room.
“I expected more from all of you,” Topanga evens out her glare around the room, “And you,” she turns to Mick with a look that sent shivers down the grown mans spine, “I will be coming after your show and then you personally for exploiting my daughter like this.”
Topanga leaves in search of Riley and the teens are left with the shows producer and Josh hovering behind with a similar look of shock and disgust at how they were acting.
“Maybe we can talk to Riley and convince her to be on the show,” Maya speaks on behalf of everyone. “Is there anyway we can drop the triangle thing? I think she’d be okay if that wasn’t featured.”
“If she doesn’t want to be on the show don’t make her!” Josh snaps.
“We can do the show without her,” Farkle agrees with Josh. He didn’t want to exploit Riley but he also didn’t want to give up the show.
“She’s the only reason you’re on the show,” Mike half scoffs.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Maya pricks up a brow.
“I need a smoke,” Mick sighs heavily and exits the room.
“Josh, what did he mean that she’s the only reason we’re on the show?” Maya asks him.
“Maya your whole standoffish interview wasn’t enticing by any means, Lucas your Mr. Perfect answers were also boring and Zay you came across as a try hard.” Josh is blunt with his response. “Farkle, Smackle you two didn’t even audition, how do you suppose you got a spot on the show?”
“I just figured with the whole friend group angle they decided to include us...” Farkle shrugs.
“I stood there and watched them put a cross next to each of your names after your audition tapes.” Josh explains, “But then Riley sat down and everything changed.”
“What do you mean?” Lucas asks, feeling terrible for everything that has transpired in the last few weeks. He wasn’t exactly pushing to stay on the show but his silence in the matter was just as bad.
Josh uses the laptop on Mick’s desk and pulls up a file. He clicks play on the file labeled ‘Riley Matthews audition tape’ he turns the screen to the other teens, hits play and leaves the room.
“Next up we have Riley Matthews.” A voice from behind the camera calls.
Riley walks nervously up to the stool and takes a seat. A soft giggle escapes her as the chair swivels with her when she tries to readjust her position.
“So, Miss Riley Matthews can you tell us why you’d be a good participant to watch on Reality High?” The producer asks from behind the camera, “What makes you special?”
Riley takes a few seconds to answer. You can see her brain ticking as she smiles softly to herself.
“To be perfectly honest with you I don’t know why I should be on your show.” Riley answers, “I don’t know what makes me special or more important than anyone else auditioning…I just know that my friends and I love your show.” Riley is nervous and the producers pick up on it.
“You seem nervous,” Mick highlights from behind the camera.
“I’ve never been really good at talking about myself..” Riley states honestly.
“Why don’t you tell me about your friends, the ones you watch the show with?” Mick asks in an attempt to get Riley to loosen up.
Instantly Riley’s face lights up. She sits up straighter in her chair and looks eager to answer. Still she takes a moment to ponder the perfect thing to say.
“You know the breakfast club?” Riley asks with a smile. “We’re kinda like that but without the whole detention aspect..” Riley chuckles. “Each of us are so different but in a unique way we’re exactly right for each other.”
With his interest peaked Mick asks Riley to elaborate.
“There’s Isadora and Farkle, they’re quite similar to one another with their genius minds and despite science - the thing they believe most in - saying they’re wrong for each other they still found love. It’s quite funny actually,” Riley gets lost in her ramble but Mick doesn’t stop her. “Both Farkle and Issy went through a great deal of growth on the outside as well as the inside and it seems that people focus mostly on the physical differences rather than the emotional.. I guess it’s not funny actually... To me I’ll alway admire how they embraced the feelings that scared them most. They’re the embodiment of the statement that looks don’t define who you are. Then there’s Zay, he was the latest addition to our group  and he admitted to feeling like an outsider at first but we were never really complete until he showed up. He’s hilarious and is known to stir the pot a little but when it comes down to it he has all of our best interests at heart. Then there’s Maya, she’s my sister - well not literally - but DNA can’t tell me otherwise. She’s fierce and strong and she hopes, even when it scares her, she hopes. She may be small but she has the heart the size of… Something really big,” Riley giggles. “Ive always wanted to be more like her.” “Then there’s Lucas,” Riley takes a deep breath, this was the big one. “He’s my boyfriend but that’s not really relevant because we were friends first. He’s overcome a lot in his life and he prides himself in being respectful and there’s not a thing that could stand in his way if he thinks one of us need protecting... He wants to be a veterinarian,” Riley giggles softly, “I guess the protection thing is just his nature…” At this point Riley had completely forgotten she was being filmed. She lost herself in talk of her friends just like she had with Evan at the ski lodge. Riley could go on and on forever when it came to her friends. “And there may of been a time in our relationship when I was scared of losing him but now I know that no matter what the future holds he’s always someone I want in my life. I always want to talk to him… So he may be my boyfriend but he’s kinda my best friend too.” Riley wears a shy smile before letting out a nervous giggle, “But you can’t let Maya know I said that because we have this ‘you and me against the world’ thing going on.” Riley pauses for a moment. “And you know at the end of the movie how Judd Nelson throws his fist into the air victoriously? I know it’s because he got the girl or whatever but that’s kinda how I feel everyday because of my friends.” Riley looks back at the producer with a sheepish smile. The kind she gets after realising she’s gone off on a ramble. “So to circle back to your original question, ‘What makes me special?’ Well, the answer is, them.”
“Thank you, Riley, I think we’ve seen enough.” Mick steps into view to give Riley a hand shake and the tape cuts out just after Riley skips away.
“Wow.” Maya says and each of the teens wear guilty expressions.
“Well I feel like scum..” Zay says light-heartedly but he and everyone else felt even worse than scum.
Lucas storms out of the room without another word.
Topanga took Riley home after the meeting and she assured Riley she would sort this out as quickly as possible. It was not long after she arrived back at the apartment that Riley received a text from Maya saying they were all going to stop the show and they’d fix everything. A little too late in Riley’s eyes as she was already so upset over the whole situation. Part of her did feel guilty for asking them to give up the show, she saw how much they were enjoying everything it brought them but at the same time she didn’t like where things were going. They were only three months in imagine what the rest of the year would bring them with life in the spotlight? Sadly, Riley tosses her phone to the side without replying.
After a quick nap, Riley takes hot bath and dresses in some comfy pyjamas. Riley goes downstairs to watch some television in the lounge and is surprised to see her friends and Uncle Josh all sitting down waiting for her. At this point Riley is feeling cornered and has no choice but to sit down and hear everyone spit apologies at her. All of which sounded sincere but Riley’s heart still ached at the situation.
They plead with Riley to stay put for a few more moments and she obliges. Maya turns on the television and Riley’s unsure what was going on but they ask her to just watch. Riley sits there as her best friend presses play on something.
The screen opens with Maya, Lucas, Farkle, Isadora and Zay all standing together.
“ ‘Sorry we’re such jerks’ take one.” Josh can be heard from behind the camera.
“Do we really have to call it that?” Maya frowns.
“Yes.” Josh says, “Are you denying that you were a jerk?”
“No.” Maya deflates.
“Then, action!” Josh says.
The five friends look awkwardly amongst themselves wondering who was going to start. Zay chuckles half heartily, “We’ve had cameras following us around for months, so why is this so hard?”
“Because this actually means something.” Lucas sighs out of disappointment in himself. “Riley, what makes you special is your faith in the universe and the limitless amount of belief you have in people.”
“Riley, I believe in you more than I do science.” Farkle states and Smackle looks lovingly up at him and nods in agreeance. “Riley, you’re special because you’ve helped us both navigate through those emotions that scared us most.”
Smackle takes a turn. “You’re special because you helped me accept a part of myself that I wasn’t willing to acknowledge.”
“You’re special because YOU have everyone’s best interest at heart.” Zay stresses. “I only ever tried to do the same.”
“You’re special because you would have given up the show - or anything for that matter - if we asked, without hesitation.” Maya speaks up. “You’re special because there’s not a thing in this world that you wouldn’t share with me. Family, friends, boys... Things I wanted because I always wanted to be more like you.” Maya wears a weak smile.  “What makes you special is that you’re going to forgive us, even though we don’t deserve it..”
“Because you’re Riley.” Farkle adds.
“And Riley’s special.” Lucas delivers the last line before raising a fist in the air and the other friends all do the same.
“And cut..” Josh says softly before the video stops.
“I take it you saw my audition tape?” Riley lets out a quiet laugh as she wipes at her damp cheeks.
“Riles, you’re so much more than us.” Maya reaches for her best friends hand.
“We’re so sorry for getting caught up in the hollywood lifestyle.” Farkle says.
“You make us better.” Lucas says with a small smile.
“Are we forgiven?” Zay asks. “Because I’m willing to grovel.”
“You’re forgiven.” Riley laughs quietly. “But what about the show?”
“We are done with it.” Maya states as a matter of fact.
“Even if we all refuse to film, surely there are more legal repercussions than them just allowing us to break the contract?” Riley knits her brows together.
“I wouldn’t worry about that.” Josh wears a proud smirk as he pulls out his phone. “After the meeting I went to look for Mick so I could quit and I found him outside…”
Riley gives him a puzzled look so without further explanation Josh plays a video he recorded on his phone. It’s of Mick taking that smoke break he mentioned he needed but he’s also on the phone to someone where he quite horribly laughs at Riley’s expense and in detail talks about the way he manipulated the love triangle etc. At first Riley was confused as to why Josh would show her this, his nasty words didn’t exactly make Riley feel better about the situation but then Josh goes on to explain how the video may or may not of been anonymously sent into a few dozen entertainment news places.
As a result of Josh doing this the video went viral as a show beloved by many was exposed for it’s cruel treating of the shows participants. Reality High was immediately pulled off the air by the network and the six teens - Riley more specifically - were issued with an apology from the head of the network.
The show was put to rest but the buzz around the teens was the craziest it’s ever been. Everyone rallied behind Riley after they heard the horrible things said by her shows producer. Suddenly her relationship with Lucas was the most adorable thing in the world but Riley chose to tune out what she could and take back ownership of her own life again.
After the apology video Lucas apologised again to Riley in private and sweetly expresses how he never wanted to fake date or real date anyone but her. Riley accepts his apology and understands he just got caught up in things. Lucas being Lucas made a point to continuously shower Riley with gestures that prove his sincerity. It was a form of smothering but Riley didn’t let it annoy her because she knew Lucas was just trying to show her he cared.
Eventually things die down and return to normal for the six friends. Riley harbours no pain or resentment towards her friends or the show because if one good thing did come out of it was the fact that Riley learnt something very important; sure her friends made her special but she made them special too.
End Notes: Yo this was long. Sorry if theres heaps of errors, editing long one shots like this is a complete nightmare!!!
A prompt sent to me SO LONG AGO!! It took me ages to get to.. I actually started it way back in the day! But heres the anon credit: (I did change a few things like leave out the R x F manipulation etc. But I hope this suffices okay!

Prologue Ch 1 Ch 2 Ch 3 Ch 4
"Are you sure you guys didn't take this too far, she bought the freaking pent house and it didn't come cheap" Josh said with utmost concern for his baby sister. Him and his wife were hosting movie night for their friends while their son was spending time with his grandparents Cory and Topanga. Darby, Yogi, Farkle, Isadora, Zay and Vanessa were present at Josh and Maya's house.
"I get your concern Josh I really do" Farkle said "I mean the plan at first was for her to rent but she buying the place only makes it so much better because now it wouldn't be easy for her to just move somewhere else, they need this push trust me it's been fifteen plus years, there has to be a reason the both of them haven't found their other halves"
Josh understood were the genius was coming from but that doesn't mean he still wasn't concerned for his sister. She tends to react to certain situations in the worst ways behaviour and health wise. This little plan of theirs, even though it came from a place of love definitely fell into the category of situations that his sister never handled properly. He just wished their group would leave her to figure this out on her own.
"My concern with this plan is what if it doesn't work and it blows up in our faces, what if Lucas gets mad, I mean we're older now but he still scares me" Yogi muttered
"Oh common honey, the man knows better now he won't even hurt a fly" Darby tried to comfort her husband and put his mind at ease.
"Yea tell that to the hole he made on the wall of his office when he found out about Nathan" Zay just dropped a bomb on the group without even realizing what he had done.
"for the life of me I still can't understand why they went so long apart when it's so clear they still love each other, she loves him, he loves her so why drag the drama on for so long gees happiness is not that hard" Vanessa exclaimed while Zay smiled and threw his arms around her.
Obviously Riles is going to be pissed at first because she knows we go to his place all the time and then out of nowhere Farkle suddenly suggests the house right next door from him" Darby said while sipping her wine
Maya was more worried about her best friend's reaction to this whole plan fiasco "I'm still a little scared, I've known the girl my whole life, when she gets pissed she could take drastic actions, what if she decides to sell the home and move"
"She wouldn't do that Maya it would be too obvious she is moving because of him, she already admitted to all of us she loves that place. She's still bubbles after all; she would never want to hurt him like that. Even if they haven't seen each other" Isadora explained. Then everyone turns to Zay as he is tearing through a turkey leg
"what are y'all staring at me for, I agree with the Mr. & Mrs. Genius here" he huffs seeing some of the members of group still in doubt, then he moves to drops the turkey leg down on his plate "common guys its Lucas and Riley we're talking of here, we've seen this play out before it's not rocket science people. What those two have I can't even begin to explain it, just being in close proximity and they can't stop talking to each other. It's a little freaky if you asked me" Zay said earning him a smack in the head from his new fiancé
"and that's how they bond with each other" Farkle added and it was as if a light bulb went off in this head "You guys that's what happened, that's why they refused to see themselves"
Maya caught on "because they knew one of them was going to cave in and then they would start speaking again, that's why Lucas leaves when Riley comes home but why didn't he leave this time"
"Duh because he wants his girl back, Jesus, what part of Lucas loves this woman don't you people understand" Zay said in frustration leaving everyone dumbfounded.
Josh was particularly shocked with these new bombshells Zay has been dropping all night, because to be honest he never thought the alleged plan would work, he always figured if they were ever going to get back together it wouldn't be because of people meddling, it would be Riley and Lucas figuring things out themselves. Josh knew parts of the story that no one present knew, so he was particularly thrilled to hear Lucas wanted Riley back for the sake of his sister's happiness. Then he turned his attention to Zay "did he tell you this? Like with actual words? What happens to Nathan then?"
"When last did Lucas stay in New York for a whole year plus" Zay asked with raised eye brows "he has more than enough doctors to take care of his clinic here, he could have gone back to Texas if he wanted to. Riley has been back for what over a month now and he still shows no sign of going anywhere. He doesn't need to tell me he wants the girl back; his actions show it"
"and Josh, who cares what happens to Nathan" Darby spat "I mean he's a good guy and all but we all know that relationship doesn't hold a candle to Rucas" Maya smiled at this remembering when they use to tease the couple with the ship name back in high school.
"That's true I haven't even considered the Nathan factor in this equation" Farkle said
"Bubbles wouldn't want to hurt Nathan either hmm" Isadora thought for a minute and looked to her husband "Dearest it would appear we skipped out on that variable, so what do we do now, Nathan is a threat to our desired outcome but there are ways to eliminate him from said equation though" Smackle smirked
"SMACKLE!" everyone yelled
Zay looked at both of them as if they were crazy "hey! Mr. & Mrs. Genius, Lucas and Riley aren't equations from a textbook, like I said this isn't rocket science, we have succeeded in getting them to see each other again that's good so now just sit back and watch the magic happen"
"In a weird way I agree with Zay on this. I don't think there's any magic to it but they definitely have some kind of pull to each other" Josh said
All through their conversations, Maya was still confused in thoughts with all of this because she never understood why, why were things happening this way for those two. Lucas had once said Riley was his favorite person in the world to talk to, and that was one of the most honest things Maya had ever heard him say. One look into his eyes you could tell he meant every word of it and he proved it all through their high school years. The two would constantly sneak off to God knows where just to be alone with each other. Once Riley told her they drove out of the city at night just for the sake of the adventure of it and of course more of an excuse for them to be together.
So why would they be so willing to go so long without wanting to see each other, Riley didn't cheat Maya was sure of that, Lord knows Missy as hot and sexy as she looked tried to get Lucas but he wouldn't budge, it wasn't their spark; those two made fireworks just by linking pinkies, they didn't stop loving each other, nope very far from that, then it hit Maya like a ton of bricks. Their first real fight started after Riley got sick once at the beginning of senior year, she kept to herself for a while after falling sick. Riley had told Maya that her asthma was acting up so she had to stay away from school for a while, Maya knew it wasn't the whole truth but she decided to not push it because she figured Riley would come to her when she was ready to talk but Riley never did and she shrugged it off because Riley got better but her friend's relationship never did. So she decided to test her theory
"Sweetie remember when Riles got sick at the beginning of senior year" everyone turned their attention to Maya wondering what that had to do with anything "do you remember what happened to her" Maya asked Josh
Josh was alarmed by this question because this was not his secret to tell and he knew the hell his mother would raise on him if he spilled anything to anybody so he panicked and said the first thing that came to his head "Oh um yea I remember, she had this flu that wouldn't go away"
Lies! Why would Josh lie to me Maya thought to herself she said it was her asthma, so something did happen to Riley. Oh God something happened to Riley! Maya began to internally panic How could I not see this? She didn't tell Lucas and it must have been huge since it caused them to split up and Josh is lying to me over it. Maya got up from the table with haste to leave "I have to go see her"
Josh followed behind her outside of their home to get away from the rest "Babe it's late we have guests, Riley's fine trust me the flu has definitely passed"
"Sweetie please I have to go see her right now, something's not adding up"
"I assure you she's fine Maya; you can ask her about it tomorrow" Josh pleaded, he could sense Maya knew he lied
"If I don't go it's going to bug me and then I'm going to have to bug you all night" Maya was determined to get answers, something happened to her sister and her husband was trying to keep her away from finding out. This only made the wheels in her head spin faster
"Maya she is probably exhausted from moving today, she and Nathan are probably having some alone time for themselves and they wouldn't appreciate you busting in asking for answers to something that happened years ago plus I already told you what happened"
"You told me something alright but you and I know that's not what happened, I know you're covering for her or you feel like it's not your position to tell so I'll respect that tonight for the sake of the people in our house but tomorrow you bet your ass I'm getting my answers" Josh shoulders visibly relaxed themselves as he let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. He was more than relieved that his wife was dropping the issue for this night because now he would be able to give his sister the heads up that her spit fire best friend knew something was up.
GMWGMWGMWGMWGMWGMWGMW
"Riley?" His eyes widen in panic "Oh my gosh Riles where is your inhaler" He rushed to her side again and put his strong muscular arms around her. Lucas didn't need to be told what was happening to her, he had been there with her when she badly struggled with it in high school.
She slid to sit on the floor of the elevator to create some kind of distance from him. His heart broke a little seeing her like this. Seeing that the doors to the elevator already closed shot and they had started moving, her heart beats sped up. Her breaths were only getting shorter so she pointed to the small cardboard box she dropped while she tripped. He didn't even think twice about it, he ripped the top off and saw a bunch of inhalers still in their packaging. He quickly tore one open, shook it and put it in her mouth so she could take the puffs. She sat calmly to relax for a few seconds before the doors opened to their floor.
Lucas squatted beside her "are you okay, Riley please talk to me, do I need to take you to the hospital" she shook her head slowly still staring at his emerald orbs that had tiny flecks of gold around them. She felt like she was in high school all over again, seeing Lucas take care of her when she use to have attacks back then. She kept staring at him as if she was looking at a ghost, her mind was running a million miles per second and her pounding heart did not help her current daze. She tried to get up but Lucas held on to her from the side to support her, she was shocked by his actions and furrowed her eyes at him but that didn't stop all the butterflies that were on a rampage in her stomach.
"Luke I'm going to be fine I'll just go home and lay down for a bit" she picked up the box to live. While Lucas was still stunned at what just happened, she called him Luke that's something he hadn't heard in years; he saw her and not in his dreams or imaginations and he physically touched her; he spoke to her; she still looked as amazing he remembered, her pictures never did her justice he always knew that but this was just mind blowing for him; she had grown so much more than his brain could currently comprehend and he didn't miss her blown out curves and long legs that did things to his insides. He paused for a minute to collect his thoughts on his way back to his house, did he just see her walk into the house right next to his, she said she was going to go 'home' where was her home, was Riley his new neighbour. He went into his place to go process what just happened.
Meanwhile on Riley's end she couldn't reach her home fast enough. She entered and slammed the door behind her then rested her back on it to take small breaths what is he doing here, how did he find me, why is this happening now, I'm happy with Nathan right? I love him right?
"Riley?" Nathan called from on top of the stairs "where do you need these to go" he said holding up two lamps
"Natan!" Riley called and ran up to him before he could say anything she wrapped her hand around his neck and kissed him. The kiss wasn't just for endearment sake, it was more of desperation, she deepened the kiss sliding her tongue into his mouth while he graciously accepted it, she held on to him so tightly for dear life and ran her hands through his brown hair. She pulled away looking into his eyes as if searching for something she was so sure for the past seven months she finally had.
"whoa, babe what was that for, I mean not that I'll ever complain but wow."
She huffed while her hands were still around his neck and forced a smile "I just wanted to say thanks, you know for helping me move, and being here with me"
"well if this is the treatment I get for helping you move, you just call me whenever you need a mover, you can call me mover man" he said with his hands on his waist pretending to be a superhero which made Riley giggle.
They got most of the boxes unpacked that day and after a light dinner of pizza and wine, both were too tired to do anything else. So they decided to call it a night. Nathan passed out immediately his head touched the pillows. Riley laid next to him but couldn't bring herself to sleep. Her mind was still on the events of the elevator; her brain had managed to memorize every detail of him. He looked so much better than he what he looked like the last time she saw him; he was much taller, her head barley reached his shoulders; and his arms only got bigger from his muscles. Her hands moved to the spot on her arms that he held, she remembered the moment he held her so vividly it was like she could still feel his arms around her. She turned on the bed to her sleeping boyfriend and felt guilt run through her, this man sleeping right next to her; a man who loved and adored her and has constantly showed her how much he cares about her, but here she was practically drooling over someone she hasn't seen or spoken to since she graduated 12th grade. She tossed when she heard her phone vibrate from the night stand

Waves
Here is another drabble. This one is a little more closely linked to the show, but still different–obviously.
This is like Ski Lodge never happened–Lucas never formally “chose” Riley, but Maya still decided she didn’t like them anymore.
I also aged them up a little bit.
The feeling I thought was set in stone
It slips through my fingers
Trying hard to let go
Lucas sits in Mr. Matthew’s class staring at the back of Maya’s head. He couldn’t even tell you what they were learning today which in hindsight was pretty pathetic. How lost can you be by the back of someone’s head that you couldn’t even pay attention class?
By the time the class ends and definitely when the day ends, he realizes he had been on autopilot almost all day. Too enveloped in the thoughts that were Maya Hunter.
He should have known she was never going to let him pick her. She is too loyal, too kind and the head of Riley Committee.
He should have known the second junior year started. She carefully chose her seat at the beginning of the year to sit in front of Riley instead of him. The first day she sauntered on in with an air of beauty and rebellion and stuttered at the open seat in front of him. He stupidly thought if she plopped down in front than she would choose him over Riley then somehow that would prove something to him–that just maybe they could make it work.
But as always, she changed direction so subtly that he was sure no one would notice that she even considered him, but he noticed it.
And it made him refuse to give up the sliver of hope he still held for his blonde beauty.
But then Riley is telling her she has changed and Maya is listening to her. Lucas could feel himself losing her as though she was a rope that no matter how tight he held on, it still slipped through fingers so quickly that it left burning scars.
He couldn’t bring himself to be mad at Riley because she was trying to find a quick fix to a triangle that was never much more than a straight line rushing right into the short stack of pancakes that had come crashing into his life when he was thirteen years old.
Now as a junior in high school, it had been going on too long and to try to change it would just lead to destruction. His group of friends was falling apart at the thought of Maya and Riley no longer being Riley and Maya.
He saw the glares Farkle sent him when he spent too long staring as Maya walked through the cafeteria.
The way Zay shakes his head at him knowingly when Maya speaks of Josh and Lucas finds any reason to leave the room.
Even Smackle had picked up on it and the sadness that she exuded towards him made him uncomfortable and fidgety. Smackle picked up on more secrets that brought the group down more than anyone else. Lucas was all but positive she knew of Zay’s crush on her and had known for quite some time.
Loving Maya and wanting her was going to hurt more people than it would make him happy. So he tried so hard to push it away, but then she was smiling at him and pulling him close to her and he holds his breath to not breathe her in.
He is going to lose her and he was a masochist for prolonging it as long as he has.
Because then–she is saying she doesn’t like him like that anymore. She liked him because Riley did and Lucas wasn’t one to cry out in anger, but he came close in that moment. Because there was absolutely no way that they could go through the shit they did and for her to feel nothing for him. The lingering looks, the holding of each other and the secret touches no one knew about it.
She thought she wasn’t going to be picked so she pushed him away before he hurt both her and Riley.
So that’s where they are at. Him staring at the back of her head while Riley thinks now they are together and maybe they are. He doesn’t even know anymore and it doesn’t even bother him when Riley starts to stare at Farkle’s head just like he did Maya.
He is pretty sure she doesn’t even know she is doing it.
They sit in Topanga’s both acting like they are happy and not falling apart and losing each other as friends in the process when she finally snaps.
“What is your problem?” Riley asked and he looked up from his homework. He was so in tuned in his world of self-loathing he didn’t even realize it was just them there.
“I don’t have a problem.” He muttered.
She scoffed an angry breath he didn’t even know she could produce. But she did and it was towards him.
“You have had a problem for months, Lucas.” Her tone begins to soften, away from angry girlfriend to worried best friend, “I am your best friend, Lucas. Talk to me.”
He knows whatever he says will break them even if it doesn’t break her, but he has to say it to someone or he might just lose his mind.
So after moments of tense filled silence, he says sadly. “She stopped liking me, Riles. It doesn’t mean I stopped liking her.”
Riley breathes an oh like, of course, that’s it. She doesn’t elaborate and neither does he. They both sit together in their misery, staring at each other as though begging the other to fix them when Maya walks in. Riley’s eyes jump over to Maya with a terrifying precision and Lucas can’t tell if Riley looks hurt or relieved.
It is awkward and confusing and Maya looks at Lucas like he has just ruined everything in the world. Farkle comes bouncing in with his usual energy, mid-sentence of telling Maya something when he finally reads the fucking room.
“What I miss?” He asks so genuinely that Riley gives him a soft smile which Farkle gladly returns.
Lucas can’t help but think that Riley was going to be just fine. He, on the other hand, probably dead at the hands of the girl he loves.
Riley’s eyes are back on him and her eyes look glazed over. He wonders if she just realized how much time she wasted on the idea of him instead of being with Farkle who had always been her knight in shining armor. How much hurt Maya had gone through at their own stubbornness.
It stays quiet and sad and it doesn’t get better.
For a long time, it just stays worse.
There is a swelling storm
And I’m caught up in the middle of it all
And it takes control
Of the person that I thought I was
The boy I used to know
But there is a light
In the dark
And I feel its warmth
In my hands
In my heart
Why can’t I hold on
It comes and goes in waves
It always does
It always does
We watch as our young hearts fade
Into the flood
Into the flood
[Chorus]
And freedom
And falling
The feeling I thought was set in stone
It slips through my fingers
Trying hard to let go
It comes and goes in waves
It comes and goes in waves
And carries us away
Through the wind
Down to the place we used to lay when we were kids
Memories of a stolen place
Caught in the silence
An echo lost in space
It comes and goes in waves
It always does
It always does
We watch as our young hearts fade
Into the flood
Into the flood
And freedom
And falling
The feeling I thought was set in stone
It slips through my fingers
Trying hard to let go
It comes and goes in waves
It comes and goes in waves
And carries us away
I watched my world youth disappear in front of my eyes
Moments of magic and wonder
It seems so hard to find
Is it ever coming back again
Is it ever coming back again
Take me back to the feeling when
Everything was left to find
It comes and goes in waves
It always does
It always does
And freedom
And falling
The feeling I thought was set in stone
It slips through my fingers
Trying hard to let go
It comes and goes in waves
It comes and goes in waves
And carries us away

Perspectives — Chapter 1: Maya
Summary: Maya’s always had mixed feelings about New Year’s. But this year, it’s different.
Read on ao3 | ff.net
Maya has always had mixed feelings about New Year’s.
When they were little, it was usually just her, Riley and Farkle. They’d be at the Matthews’ apartment, and Mrs. Matthews would make them big mugs of hot chocolate after dinner as a treat. The three of them would curl up together in the bay window, where Farkle would recount his plans of taking over the world in great detail, while Maya doodled in her small notebook and Riley cuddled Beary the bear.
And every year, her two friends would be determined to stay awake until midnight only to fall asleep beside her in the bay window well before the clock struck twelve. Maya, who’d been a light sleeper ever since her father left, and was used to staying up late and getting only a few hours’ sleep every night, would usually see the new year alone.
Farkle finally managed to stay up with her past midnight in fourth grade, and Riley joined them in sixth grade, and together they watched the fireworks from the roof of the Matthews’ apartment building. It was Maya’s last entirely happy New Year’s for a while.
.
The New Year’s in eighth grade, in their last year of middle school, was the night Maya ended up in a triangle with her best friend and the boy they both liked. It was the night Maya joined Lucas on the Matthews’ rooftop, hope in her heart and her heart in her eyes instead of hiding behind a façade, because it seemed as if, for once, she wasn’t going to be punished for putting her own happiness first, ahead of Riley’s. And she got both her hope and her heart crushed, because of course, since when was the universe ever kind to a broken, messed up girl like her?
.
On New Year’s in freshman year of high school, Maya decided she had to move on.
The events before and during their ski lodge trip had left her exhausted. Riley insisted Maya only liked Lucas, and was getting good grades and not racking up detentions, because she had ‘become Riley’. Lucas told Maya he didn’t like their teasing and bantering, making her realize she had misunderstood his feelings for her.
There was only one thing Maya could do, so that’s what she did: she removed herself from the triangle so that Lucas and Riley could be together, as they wanted.
And though Maya and Josh had decided they might be right for each other someday, Zay’s words had made her realize it wasn’t fair on either of them to not be able to live their lives now. If she and Josh decided in the future — when they were both older and not in such drastically different places in their lives as they were as a high school freshman and a college freshman — to date each other, then they could definitely do that. But for now, she needed to move on from him too. So, she’d spoken to Josh and called off the long game.
And when their classmate Brandon asked Maya to be his girlfriend at the New Year’s eve party at the Minkus penthouse, she said yes.
Brandon was one of the very few people Maya was close to outside of her immediate group of friends. In many ways, they were a lot alike. They were both a bit rough around the edges, a bit dark. Like her, he too came from a broken home (though Maya now realized that she and her mom and Gammy Hart were a whole family by themselves even before Katy married Shawn). Like her, he struggled with not believing that hope was only for suckers. And like her, he had feelings for someone who did not reciprocate them.
Maya had hung out with Brandon quite a bit during the summer before they began high school, when Riley had been in Philadelphia with her grandparents, Lucas and Zay in Texas, and Farkle busy with some or other summer academic thing. It had set the foundation of what would become a truly strong friendship. She liked him, she was comfortable with him, he liked her, he was comfortable with her. So, dating Brandon hadn’t seemed like a bad idea at all.
By the time New Year’s came around, they had already been on a couple of dates, though Maya hadn’t yet told any of her friends, not even Riley, because she didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. But Brandon was fun to be with, and she truly believed they might be able to help each other move on.
She refused to think anything about the way Lucas’s eyes had been on her the whole night, or that he’d apparently left the party when Brandon kissed her by the tall glass windows of the Minkus’ ballroom at midnight. He probably disapproved of her behaviour and her decision to date Brandon, because he didn’t like Brandon much in the first place. But he had chosen Riley, and Maya’s decision to date anybody else was none of his business.
She found out the next day, when she turned up at the bay window to tell her best friend her news and found her in tears, that Lucas had broken up with Riley at the party. Despite her own happy circumstances, it was impossible then to think of New Year’s as good when her best friend was so sad.
.
Maya had her own New Year’s eve breakup in sophomore year, when she and Brandon decided to end their relationship. They’d long confessed to each other that they still had feelings for other people, and it didn’t make sense to call themselves boyfriend and girlfriend anymore when they were just friends — close friends, but nothing more. They both decided it was best to start the new year with a clean slate.
Still, it was the end of her first proper relationship, and Maya couldn’t deny that it left a bittersweet feeling inside her.
She spent the party (being held at the Matthews’ apartment once again) surrounded by all the people she cared for. Her friends did everything they could to distract her from the fact that she’d just broken up with her (now ex-)boyfriend, and Maya had to admit they were pretty successful, though one person in particular might be the reason. Lucas stayed by her side the entire night, unwilling to leave her alone and refusing to let her mope.
Maya and Lucas had become close again after drifting apart for a bit when she’d tried to get over him by dating Brandon, and his concern made her feel warm and safe. She had to remind herself more than once that Lucas only cared for her as a friend, nothing more. That was how he’d always seen her.
She noticed, when she and her friends headed for the roof just before midnight, that Farkle held Riley back. Frowning, she was about to protest — she wanted her best friend by her side when the clock struck twelve — but Lucas caught her hand and shook his head. Puzzled but not unduly worried, Maya let herself be led upstairs. She could always find out from Riley tomorrow what Farkle wanted.
And when midnight struck and fireworks exploded in the sky above, Maya found herself laughing, squished between Lucas and Zay into the tightest group hug ever, while Smackle struggled and squirmed, and scolded both Lucas and Zay for flirting with her in front of each other. Maya looked up to find Lucas’s eyes on her, looking at her the way he’d done back in middle school. The steady, rapt look that had once led her to believe he had feelings for her.
“Happy new year, Maya.” His voice was low, and his eyes were full of some emotion she couldn’t place.
Just friends, she reminded herself. “Happy new year, Lucas,” she smiled back at him.
The light in his eyes dimmed for a moment, but then he seemed to shake off whatever had affected him, and pulled her into a tight hug that Maya returned wholeheartedly. The feeling of warmth and safety flooded her again.
She may have just broken up with her first proper boyfriend, but she always had her friends. And despite her own weird headspace, New Year’s didn’t seem so bad after all.
.
In junior year, New Year’s eve feels different. Maya, Katy and Shawn are hosting the party this time, in the bigger, nicer apartment they moved into soon after Katy and Shawn got married. Everyone Maya loves is here: family, friends, and other people who are important to her and her parents.
Mrs. Matthews and Mr. Minkus are standing by the windows, and from their loud voices and exaggerated hand gestures, Maya thinks they’re probably comparing how many A’s they each got in college or something. It’s amusing to watch.
Shawn is talking to Farkle’s mom and Harley Keiner, their middle school head janitor, both of whom he and Mr. Matthews knew back in their high school days. Matthews is chatting with Lucas’s Pappy Joe, who’s visiting New York for the holidays with Lucas’s Grandma Mabel. Maya’s Gammy Hart, Lucas’s mom Lillian and his Grandma Mabel are seated not far, having a quiet conversation of their own.
Maya’s mother has probably gone inside to check on Maya’s six month old baby brother Patrick, while Auggie and Ava have already fallen asleep together on the couch.
Her friends are grouped around the dining table: Riley, of course. Farkle and his new girlfriend Haley. Smackle and Zay, who’ve been pretty blatantly flirting with each other since Halloween. Brandon, failing miserably to appear mysterious and cool when he’s smiling like a complete dork at his girlfriend Sarah.
Riley’s been quieter than usual lately, and though Maya noticed this a while ago, she sensed that her best friend needed some space to think about whatever was bothering her before she talked about it. But Maya decides it’s time for her and Riley to have a proper talk in the bay window tomorrow, so Riley can finally tell her what’s wrong. She thinks she has an idea about what might be on Riley’s mind.
“It’s only a few minutes to the New Year, people!” Katy announces as she comes back into the living room, and the noise level immediately goes up.
Maya looks around for the one person who’s nowhere to be seen. He was talking to Brandon, Zay and Farkle earlier, and then with Mr. Keiner, but after that he’d disappeared. She’s about to ask Zay when someone takes her arm and tugs her behind the large Christmas tree, where they’re partially screened from the rest of the room.
“Ranger Rick!” Laughing, Maya turns to face her boyfriend. She and Lucas have been together since the end of the summer, and it still doesn’t cease to amaze her that they found their way to each other despite everything.
“Shortstack.” Lucas wraps his arms around her waist, grinning at her like the heehaw he is.
“What happened to your shirt?” she asks, adjusting the collar of his plaid flannel that she’d claimed for herself a few months ago. He must have found it in her closet and changed, because he’d arrived wearing the t-shirt she’d given him for his birthday, which listed every single nickname she’d ever called him.
“Your baby brother,” Lucas wrinkles his nose. “I held him for like a second, and he burped, and threw up a bit of his dinner on me.”
“He recognises a sucker when he sees one!” Maya grins. “Last week, he threw up all over Matthews. You should’ve seen his face!” A thought strikes her. “Huh. Dumping food on other people — in whatever form — seems to be a Clutterbucket family trait. My mom threw food and smashed cake on Kermit’s face when he came to visit. You know, during the forgiveness project in middle school.”
She watches as Lucas scans her face, confirms that she isn’t sad or upset when she mentions her biological father. And still decides to change the subject because he doesn’t want anything her to think about anything that might make her unhappy, especially tonight. “And you dumped two smoothies on my head on our first date,” he says.
“Best date ever!”
Lucas snorts. “At this rate, and with you as his role model, Patrick will dumping stuff on people’s heads by kindergarten.”
“Oh, do stop with all the compliments,” Maya pretends to wipe a tear. “You’ll have me bawling my eyes out in a minute!”
“Hey Shortstack,” He tugs a lock of her hair to get her attention. “Have I ever said anything nice to you?”
It takes her a second to realize he’s not just asking her a (in her opinion, rather dumb) question out of the blue; he’s repeating word for word what she said to him on New Year’s eve three years ago on the Matthews’ rooftop. It catches her off-guard. “Why?” she asks him, suspicious. His smile is a bit too innocent.
He sighs dramatically. “Do you have to spoil the moment? I’m trying something here!”
“Fine! Yes,” she rolls her eyes but replies to his first question, going along with their game. “You say nice things all the time, you never stop! I don’t know how I put up with you. You’re such a corny, gooey, cheesy huckleberry sap!”
“You forgot mushy,” Lucas grins and draws her closer. “Well, here’s one more to add to the list: It’s one minute to midnight, and I’m glad you’re standing here with me.”
Maya blinks before pressing her lips together to stop them from curving in a wide smile. It’s bad enough that her eyes are probably shining like a besotted fool’s. “You think you’re cute,” she begins, scrunching up her nose. “Now you’ll want me to say something mushy too! I don’t do mushy, Huckleberry. It’ll ruin my street cred!”
“I promise I won’t tell anyone,” he whispers mock-conspiratorially in her ear. “But for the record, it was pretty mushy when you said it to me three years ago, too.”
“Okay fine, but just this once,” she grumbles. “Mad Dog.”
His mouth falls open. “Did you just—?”
“You’ve been pestering me ever since we started going out,” Maya mutters as the crowd in the living room begins yelling the countdown. “Don’t let it get to your head.”
“Are you kidding? This is the greatest day of my life!”
“You’re such a dork!” she groans, but she’s smiling as she grabs his shirt collar and pulls his face down closer to hers. “It’s midnight, and I’m glad you’re here with me too.”

It was finally Friday night and Riley had felt like this week had been going on forever.  Her classes had started piling on assignments and she had the nagging feeling all week that something was going to go wrong. But so far nothing had and she was getting ready to enjoy a night in with just the girls. Although she had to admit to herself that a part of her wished Lucas was here too. She really liked talking to him, and his presence always seemed to make everything better. And his eyes don’t even get her started on his eyes.
She was pulled out of her thoughts when Maya asked her a question.
“I’m sorry Peaches? What did you ask?” Riley asked giving her a smile
“I asked if you were drinking tonight, Smackle wants to know which bottle she should open.”
After a moment of thought Riley responded, “Sure pour me a glass. Its girls night in and I’m ready for wine, face masks, movies, pizza and talking!”
The girls settled in around their living room in a triangle-ish shape with the pizza in the middle of them and each with their own large glass of rosé.
“So Smackle? How are things with you and Farkle? I feel like we haven’t talked about ‘girl stuff’ in forever.” Riley asked as she took a sip of her wine.
“Me and my beloved are doing quiet well. Yesterday we spent three hours just talking about theories on space. It was quiet a nice date. And how about you  Maya? Hmmm? How’s that Lindsay girl doing in your art class? I know you have a crush on her.” Smackle gave Maya a friendly look as Maya’s mouth hung open ever so slightly.
“Whaattt” She tried to play it off but neither Riley nor Smackle was believing her, “Ugh. Fine. She’s so nice and cute and she has the nicest laugh. And like I want to ask her out but I don’t know if she’s into girls.  Literally the worst part about being bi because I don’t give off lesbian vibes but I think I give off straight vibes and ugh!” Maya threw a pillow over her face as she groaned.
“Re-fucking tweet.” Riley raised her glass in Maya’s direction. “That’s always the hardest part. With things like that you just have to like ask her out and like if she says no, if you like her you could still be friends.” Riley shrugged as her phone dinged, seeing a snap from Lucas with a picture of Farkle and Zay captioned “I wish you were here, you’re more fun than these guys” She giggled as she sent him a funny face back.
Maya and Smackle shared a look as they watched Riley giggle at her phone
“And how about you Riley?” Maya asked with a raised brow and a smirk. She knew Lucas was into her best friend, and she had a feeling that Riley was developing feelings for him as well. She just wanted them together already.
“What about me?” Riley asked suddenly feeling nervous at the direction their conversation was going, she chugged some more wine to calm her nerves.
“What about you? You and Lucas make quiet the pair.” Maya responded watching her friends face heat up and not just from the wine she was drinking.
“What are you talking about? He’s like my best friend, besides you two of course.” Riley rolled her eyes, but her stomach fluttered at the idea of being something more with Lucas
“Oh please. There is some serious romantic chemistry between you too. I saw the picture Zay took of you two sleeping on their couch. The two of you looked very comfortable” Izzy gave Riley a look
“Its so obvious the cowboy likes you Riles and I think you like him to. He’s perfect for you! And unlike the bitch of the underworld he treats you right.” Maya encouraged Riley, “Come on. He’s smitten. Come on girl power ask him out!” Maya and Smackle cheered at the idea while Riley quickly drank the rest of her wine before pouring more. Trying to ease the anxiety she felt at the thought of asking out Lucas.
“Maya I told you in the beginning of the year I’m not doing that. If someone wants to ask me out and I have feelings for him or her I’ll say yes. But. I’m not making the first mood. Not what after it lead to last time.”
“Riles…” Maya sighed and tried a new tactic she had to know if Riley did have feelings for Lucas, “So if Lucas asked you out on a date you’d say yes?”
Riley thought for a long moment while both Smackle and Maya held their breaths, “Yes. If Lucas were to ask me out I’d probably say yes…” Riley couldn’t help but grin at the thought “He’s just so nice and he smells really good and he has nice hair.” Riley giggled and they could tell the wine had started to get to their friend. Riley frowned, “I miss him. I love you two but you two don’t snuggle with me like he does. He also lets me hold his hand a lot. He’s so nice.” Both girls couldn’t help but smile and giggle as Riley rambled on about Lucas.
They shared some more laughs and did a mask and while Riley was in the bathroom Maya turned to Izzy. “We should get the boys up here. See if we can’t push little miss giggles over there and Ranger Rick together.”
Smackle grinned, “It would be nice to see my beloved.” Smackle quickly took out her phone and texted the boys. Farkle responded they would be over in ten minuets tops. The girls high fived and laughed together as they waited for the boys, but were quickly overcome with concern when Riley came out of the bathroom with a pale face. Before they had time to react the boys came in
Lucas was thrilled, he had wanted to spend more time with Riley but he didn’t want to interrupt their girls’ night. But apparently Smackle and Maya wanted them to all hang out together, and he wasn’t complaining. It meant more time with Riley and before he knew it they were at their apartment. He quickly burst through their door excited to see Riley but he immediately noticed that something was wrong. She was ghost pale and clutching her phone and looked like she was about to start sobbing. Before anyone could react he pulled her into a bear hug hoping to comfort her. She started to cry as he stroked her hair and whispered words of comfort in her ear.
Their friends where shocked at how fast Lucas had reacted, he just came in the door and within seconds he was comforting Riley. And it definitely seemed to be working. None of the friends could remember a time when they had calmed Riley down that fast. She was a sensitive soul and Paula had often resulted in her crying but it usually took a good twenty minuets to get her to calm down. And within minuets she had calmed down and was hugging Lucas back with a tight grip.
Once Riley had been able to calm down she pulled away from Lucas but quickly grabbed his hand, she knew she needed to explain but she was still shaken up and needed a physical reminder that he was there. She took a deep breath and exclaimed, “So um…lets sit down so I can explain.” Everyone found their seats; Lucas was sitting so close to Riley on the ground their legs were touching, not that she was complaining.
“Paula texted me…” Riley stopped talking for a second as a choras of “That bitch!” and “The devil.” And “fuck her” were heard from her friends and they didn’t even know what she said, Izzy noticed that.
“What exactly did she say Bubbles?” Izzy asked with an encouraging look
Riley took a deep breath and pulled out the phone and read, “You’re just an insecure bitch. I treated you the way you deserved, so I don’t know why you broke up with me. Whatever its not like you could do better than me. No one likes you anyway you hoar.” Riley’s voice quivered as she finished reading it.
“That’s not true!” Lucas shouted, “Sorry that was loud. But Ri you have to know that isn’t true right? Anyone would be lucky to have you. You deserve more than her.” Lucas pulled her back into his chest as more tears came down her face. Zay plopped down next to her, rubbing her arm.
“Yeah Sugar, any one of us would be lucky to date you. And we’re blessed to have you in our lives. Don’t cry.” Riley nodded from her place in my Lucas chest trying her best to dry up her tears. Once she had finished crying she turned towards the group,
“Sorry if I ruined the night…I know it was supposed to be fun” Maya cut her off,
“Riles you didn’t ruin the night, Paula did. And if she texts again don’t open it okay? Just give it to one of us and we’ll delete it. Right guys?” Maya gave everyone a look as she glanced around, they all nodded eagerly.
“Of course, Riley we’re here to help you in anyway we can. We love you, you’re our friend.” Farkle told her giving her a big smile.
Riley simply nodded, she had curled herself up in Lucas’ lap with her cheek resting comfortably on his chest.
“Why don’t we watch a movie?” Zay suggested, since it was going to Halloween next they decided on watching Halloweentown. They had a nice time watching it and when it was over they put another movie in and another. After the third movie Smackle went off to bed with Farkle following along proclaiming he was to tired to go back to his room. Zay called the couch not wanting to leave either and Lucas figured he’d sleep on the floor. But first he had to find a way to get Riley to bed without waking her up, during the last movie her crying and drinking had gotten to her and she had fallen asleep in her place on Lucas’ lap. Not that he was complaining at all, he loved being able to hold the brunette close to him.
What he didn’t enjoy was the smirk Maya was giving him.
“Well Ranger Rick, what are you going to do about the sleeping princess there? She wont move unless you make her.”
“Well short-stack what do you suggest I do?” Lucas asked back with a smirk of his own, he liked the playful teasing with Maya. It reminded him of his younger sister and him.
“You can just put her in bed, she’s already in pjs and her door is open. Either way I’m going to bed. Goodnight losers.” Mays gave them a peace sign as she retreated to her own room. Lucas weighed his options and ultimately decided on picking her up bridal style, it was easiest with how she was placed in his lap and the way she was griping his shirt in her sleep.
He thought he had done a pretty good job of putting her in bed, until he started to pull the covers over her. And she shot up almost hitting him in the head with her own.
“Lucas? What’s going on?” She asked rubbing her eyes, he tried not to get lost in her sleep filled voice as he answered her.
“You fell asleep watching the movie, I was just putting you in bed. Zay’s sleeping on the couch and Farkle is with Smackle.” He filled her in just in case she went to the bathroom at night and was freaked out seeing some guys asleep in her living room.
“What about you?” Riley asked concern evident in her voice
“I was going to sleep on the floor, you girls have tons of blankets.” Lucas shrugged
“No. That’s dumb. You stay here with me. My bed’s big enough for two. And I don’t want you sleeping on the floor.” Lucas was tried to shake off the shock of getting to share a bed with Riley. He knew his feelings were growing for her and this was about to put him over the edge. He wanted to ask her on a date but he was so unsure if she had feelings for him. He decided he had to talk to Maya.
“Lucas are you coming in or not? I’m cold” Riley’s voice shook him out of his thoughts
He quickly slipped into the bed with her, and as soon as he was under the covers he felt her cozy up to him. He had worn basketball shorts over and he almost jumped a mile in the air when he felt Riley’s cold fit touch his leg.
“Holy shit Ri, your feet are cold.”
“I told you I was cold, but its better now because you’re here and you’re warm.” Riley sleepily mumbled as she drifted off.
The next morning when Riley woke up she moved to stretch but couldn’t when she felt an arm around her torso. She opened her eyes and realized that she did in fact invite Lucas to sleep in her bed with her last night and somehow throughout the night she had ended up on top of him. Not that she was going to complain, being with Lucas always gave her a sense of calm and after last night she desperately needed it. She took a deep breath and tried to clear her head. But it was hard, she’d been with Paula for almost a year and most days she struggled not to hear the words thrown at her in anger or because Paula felt like she looked too happy. She’d been doing so well, but once again Paula had to ruin it. A few silent tears fell down her face and she tried to wipe them away but Lucas beat her to it. He had woken up when she had attempted to stretch but Riley had been lost in her head to notice.
“Hey beautiful girl, don’t cry.” Riley let out a forced laugh and when Lucas gave her a questioning look
“Its just…you’re so nice to me and say things like that. And I was thinking about Paula and her words, and how even though we dated for almost a year she was never as nice to me as you are. And we’re not even dating.” Riley stated with a sad shrug before he could respond Riley rolled off him and into a standing position.
“Come on sleepyhead lets get some breakfast. If the others are up they can come too” Riley pulled him out of the bed and into the kitchen. Lucas was still a little shocked that he had spent the night sleeping next to her. They found their friends all mulling around waiting for the pair, no one said anything expect Maya gave both of them a look that made Riley’s face flush. The gang headed to a cheap nearby diner for some breakfast. Just as they sat down Riley’s phone dinged and without thinking Riley grabbed it and oh how she wished she hadn’t.
It was another text from Paula that read, “You’re nothing without me Riley. You just stay in Rileytown all day well your friends put up with your silliness. Grow up bitch.” Lucas quickly noticed Riley stiffen next to him and when he saw the look she was giving her phone he gently took it out of her hand.
“Riley, whatever Paula is telling you is a lie. And we’re you going to give us your phone to delete the texts?” Lucas asked with a slight reprimanding tone.
“I was going to! But it just dinged and I look at it and there it was” Riley stated with a sad tone. Lucas noticed that the light that shone from her was dimming he wanted to help, and an idea came to mind.
“Farkle can you like make it so that it doesn’t show what Paula has texted Riley until you open the phone?” Farkle gave Lucas a smirk,
“Yeah it’ll take me like two minuets” He held out his and hand for the phone and after a few moments he gave it back to Riley
The group had a good time at the diner joking around and Riley seemed to get lighter with each moment. As they were walking back to campus Riley’s phone dinged once again with a notification. She glanced at and wordlessly handed it to Lucas.
He opened the text and tried not to look at it but that was easier said then done. The text, “You’re a greedy cheater. Just like all bi people. That’s why we didn’t work out.” Lucas thought it sounded eerily familiar but he couldn’t place it as he handed Riley back her phone, she returned it to her pocket and grabbed his hand as they walked.
She wouldn’t tell anyone if they asked but she was still shaken by the message she had read at breakfast and she was hoping Lucas could help her push those feelings away. Lucas gave her hand a squeeze and a dazzling smile that she returned.  He was happy she seemed to be feeling better, but he couldn’t help the nagging feeling about the text. Why did the wording sound so familiar?
