The Tree Banshee theory

This is a theory predicting the role of Spooky Month's most enigmatic monster, one many fans might not even know about yet, so sit back and enjoy!

Watching HS for a second time, Gregor's pose here stuck out to me, so I went back to check my hunch...

Yep, he's in the same pose as the figure on the left wing of the gate. But what about the tree like figure on the right wing?

Well, for that, we turn to the movie theatre, many fans know about the demon priest poster that foreshadowed HS back in TT, well we see a very interesting poster for a second in episode 6

"The Forest Sight", huh?

Now for the clencher, we turn to an image from the arg

The same eye patterns, and a ghoulish being I've come to call the Tree Banshee, you might remember it for it's scream in TT or for an illustration of it in the book from the TT arg.

I believe this entity also somehow benefits from sacrifices made to Eyes and that it will be a/the major monster of a future episode, which lines up well with my idea of Roy's episode being about him chasing Skid and Pump into the woods, where they get lost.

With that tweet thread from Pelo about how Skidad doesn't care about Lila BUT cares about Skid and that he's "everything" to him it seems more likely that Skidad and Lila were some sort of arranged marriage so that they could have a kid to be the leader of the cult after Skidad died

It also made it more likely that Lila killed Skidad (I was skeptical on that one purely because we don't know much about their relationship)

I’ve been thinking a lot about Skid’s Dad after a certain tweet Pelo made, hinting that he might come back

And I’ve been wondering

What if he’s not really dead?

Hear me out here. What if he’s not really dead, and the mannequin is just a red herring?

We never get told how he dies, simply that he’s dead. We’re never told if a funeral was held or if there was even a body to bury

So what if he faked his death? To keep his family out of his cult business? Whether it was simply to get them out of the way of his progression or out of the way of danger.

He led Skid and Lila to believe he was dead so he wouldn’t be questioned about constant meetings with the cult or any strange behavior. We see the cultist robes in the attic, so what if he had to leave them behind upon faking his death? And Lila held onto them because they were the last she had of him.

But that’s just a theory

Death (as a living being)

I’m actually surprised no one has talked about this before but I’d just like to share my thoughts about this because I thought this was a little interesting

So at this part and during the cave scene with Puss, Death emphasizes on the fact that he’s fond of the scent that is fear.

He mocks Puss almost the entire film, making these elaborate ‘illusions’ in Puss’s head. If he simply wanted Puss dead, he could have just killed him, but as he admitted it himself, he decided to ‘play with his food.’

He gets annoyed when Puss mentions the phrase, “I laugh in the face of death” and quotes him in the cave, saying Puss had never even noticed him because he laughs in the face of death. Puss laughs in his face, quite literally.

And obviously, he was annoyed by this. So what better way to get back at him than to quote him to his death? Death clearly wanted Puss to know the exact reasons he was cutting his life short and he made sure Puss knew it well; he struck him with his blade, immediately deeming the statement ‘never been touched by a blade’ as false and continued to haunt him when he tried to get more lives back in hopes of shaking Death off of him.

Death exerts an extra amount of effort into playing the role of ‘the big bad wolf’, raising his sickles and using them as hand gestures instead of his actual hands.

But no one has questioned his sudden shift in personality when he finds that Puss does in fact value his life and now sees Death as an equal rather than a concept that is below him.

Death looks VERY different from how he did the entire movie. But what else was different in this scene was his intentions. The moment his intentions changed, his creepy/scary complexion had completely faded away into something more gentle. Even his voice had grown soft towards the end of his sentence when he says, “Right?”

What am I getting at? Well, basically, judging from his last scene, I strongly believe that a lot of what we were able to infer about Death’s ‘personality’ from the entire movie was barely even half of how he truly is. The things he says like “I just love the smell of fear”, “go ahead, run, makes it more fun for me,” and “this is gonna be fun”, had mostly been the side of him that he showed to mortals who didn’t know their place in life. In fact, I believe in the cave of lost souls he almost oversells the idea of Death being Puss’s worst fear as he constantly repeats Puss’s quote and tells him, “but you’re not laughing now,” like that wasn’t something Puss already knew.

And regarding his rage when he yells, “why the hell did I play with my food” in spanish, it kinda just confirms that Death was playing a role and this may or may not be how he views fear or mortals in general.

The last scene was a sliver of what or how Death truly was; a softspoken creature who just wishes to be respected by mortals.

But that is just my interpretation of the movie. I very well may be completely wrong about this, but I just thought I’d share my views on this film and how Death was written.

I find it interesting that no one's pointed out this line from Moloch, we know Pelo is vey particular about the use of "everything" in SM, and here we have what is, to my knowledge, the first use of "nothing" in the franchise.

Now we have another word to keep an ear and eye out for. If you have any ideas, please share them in comments or RBs

Something I've seen no one talk about:

Skid's nickname has only been said or seen once thoughout the 5 episodes, and it was when Skid introduced himself and Pump to Eyes in The Stars.

Skid has said Pump's nickname three times (twice in The Stars, one I mentioned and In Deadly Smiles), Pump also writes his nickname on a letter him and Susie are sending to their parents

We also know that Pump's real name starts with "Wil"

Skid's real name is also hidden in a photo of him and his parents when Skid got his first tooth

This probably means nothing but I just find it interesting that no one has said the word "Skid" in the show except Skid himself, and we know the start of Pump's real name but we have no idea what's Skid's real name is, if it means anything at all it'll probably be connected to the lore with the cult somehow, and I only think that because of this image
