As we find ourselves nestled in the delicate balance between winter’s hushed whispers and the impending arrival of spring, I’m reminded of the quiet beauty found in the in-between—the gentle pause where the earth catches its breath before bursting forth with new life.

During this middle way between seasons, I often find myself lingering, not quite ready to emerge from my winter cocoon. There’s a certain comfort in the stillness, a familiarity in the chill of the air and melancholic gloom of the clouds. Yet, as the promise of spring beckons, I feel a stirring within—a subtle invitation to welcome the unfolding of new beginnings.

There is magic in embracing the flow, in listening to the whispers of nature and allowing ourselves to be guided by its gentle currents.

As we prepare to transition into the blossoming of spring, here are four herbs and plants to accompany us on this journey: Nettles, Cleavers, Dandelion, and Peppermint.

7th May 2023. The view from the washing line. My Dutch barn door made by my Dutch husband, painted in Duck Egg Blue. Door made using reclaimed building materials and glazing. Of course there is a story to it. We had sold some second hand glazed French Doors on Gumtree, pointing out the reasons why they were being sold to the buyer and he laughed it off as an easy fix, then we got the call that he wanted to returned the doors with the complaint that they weren’t fixable and he couldn’t even use the materials to make another door. So we refunded the full amount and Michael made this door from them. It always makes me smile. Would you like to join me? I’m hoping to be posting a photo each day in May. I love it how Lil potters about the cottage, she takes such pride in helping make Fairy Wren Cottage a cosy home. After my morning sit outside in the sunshine, I came in to find Lil had replaced last week’s kitchen table flowers with a fresh linen table runner and a cyclamen she had bought me. Late Friday afternoon in the garden picking a small posy of wallflowers for next to the bed. The cabbage I grew from seed! It’s a first and has been a long time garden goal. But, I am always learning and that is the great thing about gardening. • My two contributions for the new community made Growing Food Ideas ebook are: 1. During the colder months there is less grass and green pick growing for our chickens to graze on. To add variety to their grain based diet we grow mustard greens, kale, cold climate herbs and lettuce for them. Year to year we let these plants self seed and it costs us nothing. 2. Our elderly friend keeps a very small fruit and vegetable garden now and shares her abundance with us. We grow extra seedlings, fruit and vegetables to share with her. We also keep a couple of extra hens to share the extra eggs with her. • Keep sending your ideas in for the free ebook. Everyone is welcome. • I wanted to create this ebook, to help us help each other grow more food for ouselves since the increase in food and living expenses. Lil made a smoothie while we wait for lunch to cook.
