In today's consumer society, we no longer take the time to appreciate life's little pleasures, such as strolling barefoot in the grass, admiring the moon, listening to the birds sing, or even being bored. Our time is often dedicated to the incessant quest for financial gain to satisfy our material needs, which are constantly renewed due to rapidly evolving technologies, programmed obsolescence and the omnipresent advertising that surrounds us.
People who adopt a frugal lifestyle and consume less are often more satisfied with their lives than those who earn less. It seems that the satisfaction associated with material consumption is often fleeting, and that we are always on the lookout for more, insatiable in our desire to possess. Once a purchasing decision has been made, it often takes a back seat to other concerns, and the pleasure of the purchase can be short-lived.
The philosopher Schopenhauer developed the thought of satiety, which represents the feeling of emptiness and boredom one can experience after satisfying a desire.
Desire is a by-product of need, involving the addition of unnecessary elements and pleasure. For example, eating is a basic need, but eating caviar is a desire because it involves pleasure and is not necessary for survival.
By adopting a thoughtful approach and asking the right questions, it is possible to adopt a minimalist lifestyle, owning only the essential material goods. This approach helps to reduce unnecessary consumption, to appreciate each object for its true utility, and to avoid cluttering up with superfluous goods.
We can also reduce our consumption and our carbon footprint by choosing products that we really need, and that are manufactured under ethical and sustainable working conditions. By opting for this approach, not only can we consume less, but we can also benefit from products that are more sustainable and economical in the long term.
Similarly, we can look at agriculture and our food. It's best to opt for local, seasonal agriculture, as this not only directly supports local farmers, but also reduces the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the many vehicles involved in long-distance product transport, which can sometimes cover thousands of kilometers.
For example, a tomato imported out of season can generate up to four times more kg of CO² than a local tomato in season.
It's also possible to grow your own food and become food self-sufficient. This approach preserves the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to the transport of goods, as well as ensuring food security in the event of crisis or shortage. What's more, home-grown food can be healthier and of better quality, not to mention the advantage of being food independent. This can be done on a small scale, even in a small garden or on a balcony, by growing herbs, vegetables or fruit.
It's possible to live off the grid. It's a radical approach to voluntary simplicity that involves living entirely autonomously, disconnected from the power grid, running water and urban infrastructure. This practice may require advanced technical skills, as well as adjustments to lifestyle and consumption patterns. However, living off-grid can offer total freedom and independence from conventional production and consumption systems, and a significant reduction in environmental impact. For example, by using renewable energy sources such as solar panels or wind turbines, and by collecting water from natural sources.
A fact about rejection in humans, almost all the times humans react to the rejection or the answer no more than they react when they receive a yes or praise.
Stats show that rejection only increases emotional aggression and decreases the helping behavior.
You can look at it from a different perspective where a no is as good as a yes and that will make all the difference.

Life is moving faster and faster these days. While living in Alaska we got pregnant, then moved to Washington on some undeveloped land, spent the last few months trying to get utilities in order, and are still living that RV life currently. The tiny house is coming along, but progress has recently come to a slow grind, even more so now with the arrival of that Alaskan baby. Still, in all the chaos, little moments of quiet, like in this photo, pop up.
