..gaffen and zeldas horses pre and post cal (including hylia brainworms)? names + personalities perhabs
hehe oh this might be long. because I . uh
drew all of them.
gaffen has five horses so. full slots in-game yea. non-"special" horses are sneaky, cheese, and epona! the giant horse is named pumpkin, and the white horse is named cloud, however he does not really consider cloud his horse. he also did the epona thing </3 i am taking a little artistic license with the horses because I want there to be different heights + builds for them uh yea. i used to be really into horses growing up so its my right. horse isle 2 babeeyyyy
sneaky -- mare, skewbald, 14.5 hh. I would say she's probably descended from horses that were already running wild around hyrule from before the calamity. I'd say her build is similar to that of an american mustang for that reason (short, very hardy. tho tbf I really dont think a lot of feral horses WOULDNT be like this. im just. messing around) she's gaffen's first horse, and his favorite one.
Tumblr media
she's about seven years old now? gaffen caught her when she was fairly young and very soon after he left the great plateau so she took to him very well. shes very gentle and intelligent, generally speaking doesn't know what to do around monsters. gaffen had to train her to not shy around them because she is not a fan and is kind of a coward </3 she knows a bunch of tricks like shaking hands and standing up on her hind legs, retrieving objects, and other stuff. she's very treat-oriented and will listen to anyone who gives her food. this actually led to a yiga kidnapping? once? yeah the yiga tried to steal her oops. her name is sneaky bc gaffen had to sneak up on her to catch her. very creative
epona -- mare, flaxen chestnut, 13.9 hh, about six years old. also descended from already-feral horses, though she may have a little farm horse that got free in there. she's the second horse gaffen registered!
Tumblr media
epona started just. following gaffen one day. this is presumably because she was bored and smelled food on him. she's a very bold horse, and not afraid of a fight. she also gets bored really easily, so gaffen has taught her several tricks as well. she really likes people, and is the most vocal of gaffen's horses. gaffen named her after a story he heard about chosen heroes naming their horses epona, as he didn't know the story when he found sneaky.
cheese-- stallion, 15hh blue roan. he's descended from horses used by the hyrulean military. he's got a very long, pretty mane and is very well-built, similar to an andalusian.
Tumblr media
cheese was named after his coat color and markings. he's around seven, and is gaffen's fourth horse. gaffen thought he looked like mold but the stable owner he tried to register him at (it was tasseren) said he wouldnt let gaffen name a horse mold. so he settled on cheese. cheese is generally a very sweet horse who loves attacking monsters. he's kind of annoying around people he doesn't know and will nibble on your clothes. but! he is a great jumper and people have asked gaffen if they could breed cheese with their mares once or twice. his favorite treat is apple horse treats that some stables will sell
pumpkin -- 23 hh mare, technically this coloration I dont THINK exists irl but the closest is probably a liver chestnut. she has the build of a shire more or less, and her bloodline is believed to be the result of an abandoned breeding project in the gerudo highlands.
Tumblr media
pumpkin is AGGRESSIVE. towards horses, people, what have you. the problem is she's very attached to gaffen and gaffen as far as hes concerned thinks pumpkin can do no wrong. she runs over things with no remorse. its not like she wants to she just doesnt care. gaffen thinks she was the matriarch of her old herd. she's a very proud horse and refuses to do tricks but she is very affectionate towards gaffen and generally listens to him. her favorite treat is endura carrots. she is the fourth horse gaffen has registered and is around fourteen years old.
cloud-- 14.2 hh white stallion, around nine years old. my god I did not want to make him white I wanted to make him a grey or ivory or perlino but nooo. canonical pink nose which means he's probably white ew ew ew. anyway he is based on an arabian horse, however I gave him feathering, he's kinda fuzzier than an arabian and he probably has a mane more like an andalusian. i love andalusians. but he descended from a special breed of horses called the hyrulean imperial breed! they're a hotblooded breed known for their intelligence and grace.
Tumblr media
cloud is the last horse gaffen registered, probably because it was so frustrating to catch him. unfortunately toffa was a LITTLE bit more picky in this au lets say. and didnt just look for a white horse but something with the breed characteristics of a a hyrulean imperial. so gaffen ended up catching several horses either sired by cloud or part of his herd that were a similar color. cloud, uh, well he hates everyone. he is wild as they come, very difficult to train, even for someone who likes training horses and had quite a bit of experience like gaffen did at the time. this was only exacerbated by hylia having recently popped into gaffen's head and insisting he give the horse to widget and train him properly, which only made him more angry at the horse. gaffen just. didnt really treat him well. to him, that is not his horse. cloud is a big fan of apples but he also likes sugar cubes-- basically anything sweet.
ok pre-calamity horses now
chestnut-- 15 hh mahogany bay gelding, 15 at the time of the calamity.
Tumblr media
chestnut is a horse that gaffen got from his parents when he was thirteen. it took him a bit to get used to riding but once he understood it and began to bond with chestnut he fell in love with horses. they're better than dogs, obviously. chestnut was basically the perfect companion-- he was trained very well for his job before gaffen got him and had a gentle disposition. chestnut, unlike gaffen, seemed to enjoy the company of just about everyone, and most stables gaffen went to complimented him on how well-kept and good-natured chestnut was. when the calamity hit gaffen ordered the boy under him who was responsible for the horses to set chestnut and the other horses free. it's unknown if the horse survived.
lily -- 14.2 hh white mare, around 5 years old at the time of the calamity. I DO NOT KNOW WHY WE CAME UP WITH THE SAME NAME </3 she is a hyrulean imperial
Tumblr media
widget did not like lily at first, and lily did not like her. though she was trained to be ridden without complaint by the royal family specifically the horse had a way of being annoying without technically going outside of the rules she was trained to follow. though some stablehands suggested she take some time to learn better riding habits widget didn't really care to do it as she had made up her mind that she didn't like horses and didn't want to put any effort into learning how to bond with hers. eventually, with some help from gaffen the Horse Obsessed Freak, widget does learn to like and work with lily and they get along fairly well.

[Image ID: A digitally illustrated redesign of Fluttershy from My Little Pony: Friendship is magic. Flutteryshy is a fluffy yellow pegasus horse with skewbald patches of pale fur. Her mane and tail are green, and so long that they flow across the ground, appearing to have picked up twigs, leaves, and flowers while dragging. Her hair mostly covers her eye, which is blue. Her mane is pinned up partially to support a robin’s nest with eggs. Her cutie mark shows several pink butterflies. Her wings are bandaged with grey compressional tape. End ID.]
Fluttershy is something of an outcast among the ponies of Ponyville, since she lives on the outskirts of the town, never wears shoes, and talks to all her animals as if they understood her. Some of the local ponies even think she’s creepy, and the fillies make up rumors about her being a witch who cursed anyone who tries to go into the Everfree forest. That suits Fluttershy just fine, though. She doesn’t need that much company; she’s content with her small group of friends, most of which are woodland critters. Fluttershy is a bleeding heart whose compassion extends to nearly every living thing, since her appellation “The Arbor Pony” allows her to speak to and understand both animals AND plants alike.
Fluttershy was born with chronic joint pain that makes it extremely difficult for her to fly or channel any magic with her wings, so she moved down from the clouds to live somewhere where mobility would be easier. It still hurts to get up and move around some days, so Fluttershy prefers to take things slow, and knows the value of rest and relaxation. Fluttershy is so gentle, in fact, that a family of robins built a nest in her hair one day while she was in her garden, and she decided to let them stay there and styles her hair around the bird’s nest to keep it stable. What Fluttershy enjoys more than anything is a cup of lemongrass tea and a quiet sunny day at home. In that way, it might seem a little odd that her girlfriend is the fastest flyer in Equestria, but she wouldn’t trade her for the world.

Ride up - 12 lessons in England
I've just moved to the UK for university and I started taking riding lessons at the place affiliated with the university in November? Maybe October.
Guys. I'm having a really nice time.
There was that initial weird sussing-out moment from the horse people, been sitting on a bunch of school ponies, couple of schoolmasters, but now sort of moving towards schoolmasters/babies and onto the More Exciting horses. They sort of tested me out with a Big Bay warmblood/Irish Draft gelding schoolmaster in my first lesson this year (who handed my ass to me a little, but I won't lie I loved it, 10/10 would do again) and then I had sort of a rough ride on a lesson pony who'd been trouble in the school (the lesson before, I'd gotten this just GORGEOUS 13hh skewbald pony pulled out of the New Forest as a feralish young mare with a foal at foot, 8ish years old and cute as a button, and JUST like a pony I used to ride back at home. The coach kept shouting out,
'She looks really happy!' and tbh I was glad because I was having a fantastic time on her, pressing all her lil buttons. She had ALL the transitions in place, from halt to canter and back down to halt. She had a lil leg yield! And a not-half-bad shoulder-in. Maybe the nicest I'd managed to ride lateral-work). And then I had a rough ride and felt very dejected because other Trouble School Pony didn't magically turn angelic for me like the previous Trouble School Pony (tbh I came off him 45 minutes later feeling as if I'd made the problem worse, not better).
And then on Monday I got Bob
Bob is REALLY FRIGGING CUTE. He's a big (16h+) Irish Cob/drum horse type, with stupid big hairy feet and a dumb white face, one brown one blue eye, a MOUSTACHE (!) with funny dark ears and a blue roan/sabino thing going on. He's a looker. About 8 years old, comes from a maybe not so nice home (origin story unclear) and the instructor describes him to me as 'a bit tense' when I'm getting on. And she's standing at my knee looking up at me, and I suddenly felt 15 years old with my old instructor from back home standing next to me and talking me through a new horse before a ride. It felt good to remember that I've got hours under my belt and experience, LOTS of different horses and mostly successful rides. Some real bad ones thrown in there, but when I look back at those really bad rides later, they're probably the ones where I learnt the most about myself, the ones that changed me for the better.
And I just sort of had a ride and enjoyed it. And it was simple. Calm. A little wiggly sometimes, a bit messy on the right rein, but he was an uncomplicated, fundamentally good loveable baby who just wanted to do a good job. He tried so very hard. His feet are Very Big and hairy and cantering is hard work, but he tried his best at laterals. He was very, very sweet. And we had fun together and were both better for it and I'd happily do it again.
And that's where I'm at. Next lesson's on Monday evening.

Ch 1-Les Brothers d'en face After failing to try to get the Cossacks and a Chinese to join the 22nd cavalry to fight the Sudists
Blutch and Chesterfield return
to Alexander's camp.
after some time after that incident Chesterfield and Blutch managed to hide the lying.
But, their superiors soon discovered everything.
As punishment, the two had to spend a few months in the jail in the camp.
After those long months in jail, their superiors decided to give the two of them a second chance to recruit new soldiers.
Soon they returned to where Mayor Dooley was waiting for them.
"Mayor Dooley?" Asked Chesterfield.
"Yup, Sergeant Cornelius Chesterfield and Caporal Blutch are you here again to try to recruit the new soldiers?" asked the mayor and the two nodded yes.
"Well, I hope the same thing didn't happen with the Cossacks." said Mayor Dooley, looking seriously at the two who were surprised to see that the news went quickly.
"Yes ... and you already knew what happened, didn't you?" chuckled Chesterfield nervous
"Yes, I heard from Captain Stark." replied seriously.
"but, thank your superiors and me because we are willing to give you a second chance." said the mayor, which made a big smile appear on the sergeant's face.
"But a question, what are their names?" It was Caporal's turn to ask.
"Good that you asked that.
he said, going over to a table and handing Chesterfield a paper.
"Here are the names of the two."
answered Mayor Dooley.
Soon, Chesterfield and Blutch looked at both names on the paper, and their eyes widened in surprise.
"Huh? Adrian and Andrew ..." murmured Blutch, until reality made him shook his head.
"wait, are those names ..."
"Yes, they are native to the United States." replied Dooley.
"The two born in Virginia and moved to Missouri to try a new life.
well they are out there, let's say it was a mistake for us to give this mission to try to make those men become real soldiers ... "
said the mayor, sitting in his chair to settle his affairs.
"Good luck." he finished with a smile at the corner of his mouth.
"Thank you Mayor Dooley." he said shaking the mayor's hand and going outside, just as they left the mayor's office they saw some soldiers.
some talking about everything and nothing.
Soon the red-haired sergeant stepped forward and cleared his throat
"Well, which one of you are Adrian and Andrew?" asked the sergeant, looking at the young soldiers.
"Well it looks like ..." the first voice spoke, it seemed to be from an older man.
"these are Us ..."
spoke the second voice that was identical to the first but this sounded a little younger.
Soon two young men with black skin and curly hair, identical to each other, stepped forward to the surprise of the caporal and the sergeant.
Adrian had gray eyes and Andrew had hazel eyes.
Something that some black-skinned people didn't have.
Some of these people had brown or black eyes, so Chesterfield deduced that they had inherited the color of the eyes of a relative like a Grandfather or an Uncle.
"Are these Adrian and Andrew?"
Blanket whispered to Chesterfield.
"I think so, Blutch."
Chesterfield whispered back.
Chesterfield looked up and down at the two young men.
"So, are you very similar, are you by any chance twins?"
asked Blutch and the two young black men nodded.
"Twins ... this is something rare to happen."
it was Chesterfield's turn to speak.
"But with the color of your eyes it's easy to tell who's who."
"Heh, that's true." replied Adrian.
if we both had black or brown eyes you two would be confused all the time. "said the young man with gray eyes.
"Greetings, i, m Sergeant Cornélius Chesterfield and Caporal Blutch Hardings." he said introducing himself on behalf of the two.
"The General and the Captain gave a second chance to train the two of you to do well on the battlefield." he explained, soon the redhead changed his facial expression from serene to serious.
"Are you ready for this?" asked the redhead.
"The war can last for years, and the soldiers of the 22nd cavalry are exposed to the dangers of this civil war, some survive and others do not.
"you are aware of that, aren't you?" he asked and the two nodded yes.
"Yes, Sergeant, we are aware that during a battle we may come back alive or not." Replied Andrew.
Letting out a short quick sigh, Chesterfield ordered Blutch to fetch the uniform the soldiers were wearing, something Blutch did without murmuring or questioning, as he had already done the mesko when he went to get the uniforms for the Cossacks and the Chinese.
When Blutch arrived with the two uniforms, the two young men went to a place to change and try on the clothes.
The uniforms fit the twins right as one (or two) gloves, the uniforms were the same as those of the soldiers at back the camp.
"Very well, come with us now." He said.
"Where are we going sergeant?" asked Blutch, looking back at where the two twins were talking to each other, the conversation seemed to be fine but Blutch decided not to interrupt.
"Well, we're going to have to train them, my little Blutch, and it's going to be in the very place where that failure happened." explained while he cringed a little with the memory.
"Oh please, those Cossacks were good either." said Blutch, smiling a little but just as the caporal saw the glare that Chesterfield shot at him, the mocking smile became a frown.
"For a circus, but not for being soldiers." huffed the redhead.
A few minutes walking, silence prevailed among the four until they arrived in a clearing with a vast space for training.
"Here, we're here." he said and the two twins looked at Awe at the vast space that the field had, it seemed that the green pasture seemed to have no end as well as the mountains that were there, far away.
"Your training starts now." said the redhead.
"Blutch, you know what to do." said chesterfield and utch dashed back to where they came from.
after a few hours of waiting, Blutch returned with Two Skewbalds, the sergeant was impatient with the delay of Blutch who came with two Skewbalds.
"Sorry sergeant, I took too long because these were the only horses that were there ..." the young one sheepily.
"Adrian and Andrew come here!" shouted Chesterfield and the two woke up from a long nap, then the two went to Chesterfield and Blutch were, and were surprised to see the two horses.
"First lesson of training, you will go horseback riding." explained Chesterfield with an proud smile.
"As you are in the 22nd cavalary you should know how to ride them, horses can be a little difficult to ride and be trained." explained the sergeant and then he looked with a serious expression at the two boys.
"And then." he started, "who's going first?" the red-haired sergeant asked.
"I go first!" exclaimed Adrian,
leaving Chesterfield surprised.
"Are you sure about that?" he asked trying to hide the nervousness in his voice.
"Relax, you will see Adrian in action." he said, approaching the Skewbald and saddling him, then the youngest climbed the White and Brown furred equine.
Needless to say, but he did a very good job, even the Sargent's jaw fall at seing the young man controlling a horse on the first day, as he and Blutch were training for almost three days when they arrived in the Army.
"Look, you did very well, better than the last recruiter who couldn't ride a horse."
"Really?" he asked surprised and the sergeant nodded, then he tried to make a serious face, but the joy he felt did not keep an straight face.
"thank you sergeant."
"And you, Andrew, can you ride a horse?"
Chesterfield asked looking at the hazel-eyed man.
This question took the oldest of the brothers by surprise, soon he could feel his throat close but what could he tell the redhead?
who didn't know how to ride a horse?
That you were not prepared for a test like this?
Or should he just lie?
Lying was the right option, wrong for some ... but can lying always get you out of something right?
"Suuure ..." he lied and Adrian facepalmed something that blutch realized.
Adrian felt a hand on his shoulder, he turned and saw Blutch with a worried expression on his face.
"Let me guess, he never rode a horse before."
"No, never," replied the youngest.
"although we are twins, we are very different, we were raised on our father's farm." explained the gray-eyed young man.
"he was only good at other tasks but never riding a horse." he said with a certain nervousness in his voice as he looked at the older twin.
"Aie, aie, aie..." murmured the young caporal.
"Very well ..." he said, saddling the white and black furred horse.
With a quick sigh, the young man finally got on his horse.
A new experience for him since he had never assembled one.
"Good horsey, good boy ..." he said getting on the horse but the horse that Blutch got was skittish and he took down the young man who had just ridden him.
"Damn ..." he said getting up and dusting his uniform.
"Are you okay bro?" Asked Adrian from a distance.
"Yes, but it's time to try again!" He said going to the horse and getting on it again.
"I like his persistence and determination." said the sergeant, noting that the young hazel-eyed man was getting on his horse again.
"He was always like that." he said.
"I always wanted to show Dad that he could make it happen." explained younger of the twins.
Soon they watched the struggling young man to stay on top of the steed.
Soon Sergeant Blutch and even Adrian could not contain their laughter after seeing the novice soldier try to control the horse or even fall into a puddle of mud.
"Uhhh, I-I think that- that's enough ..." Chesterfield said trying to keep from laughing again, but it was something that Blutch and Adrian tried to do but failed miserably.
approaching the young man, Chesterfield put a hand on his shoulder.
"Hey look at me." he said and the young black man looked at the redhead.
"when Blutch and I arrived here we didn't even know how to ride a horse.
Of course your brother is one step ahead of you but hey! it's never too late, is it? "he asked and the young man was silent and then nodded.
"Now let's go back to camp, okay?"
Upon returning to the camp, the four saw that there were more of them there all looking very young, some seemed to be just 23 and 26 years old and others already adults seemed to be 38 and 40 years old.
Inside a cabin made of wood, a soldier named Liam was looking out the window to see the four men arriving there.
"My Colonel." he said to the white-haired man.
"Sergeant Chesterfield and Caporal Blutch are here with the new recruits."
"Great, let's see how they do."
"Do you think they managed to train them both?" asked Liam.
"Those two idiots?" the Colonel immediately laughed out loud.
"Of course not, you will train them just to check I want you both ready tonight."
"Yes, my colonel." he said and went out to where Chesterfield and Blutch were with the new recruits.
"So ... are you the two new recruits?" he asked and they both nodded.
"Great, you have ten seconds to join the others." he said
"Join the others to where?" It was Adrian's turn to ask.
"To the front of course, now follow us you and the others are heading to train and then to Biglerville." Explained Liam.
"Biglerville well ..." the oldest one said and then his eyes wait is an three days trip! "Shouted Andrew to the annoyence of Liam.
"Well you better be ready for long trips, 22nd cavarly soldiers not only battle on the battlefield
but they also do some patrols in some cities and also in the states of the U.S.A. "he explained." C, mon you two. "
"Good luck." said Caporal Blutch.
"We are going to need it."said Andrew and he and his brother joined the other soldiers for a trip that would last not one, but three or seven days.
A few days passed after the new soldiers left the camp to be trained.
while this was happening, the same things were happening in General Alexander's camp.
The Charges the enemy troops in the battlefield, some missions like going to fort bow and even Chesterfield and Blutch getting themselves into trouble and trouble, and rare trips to Fort Bow.
"Hey Blutch stop bein, worrywart they are fine." Chesterfield said irritated with the caporal pacing.
"How are you sure about that?"
"'Cause they are back!" He said pointing to the same group of soldiers returning to the camp.
Soon the two brothers went to Sergeant and Caporal to tell how the long days of training were with Liam and the others.
"Hey, how was the training?" Blutch asked.
Well ... weapon training was easy for me, but difficult for my brother here. "He said pointing to Adrian who was scratching the back of his head.
"Why? The redhead asked." Don't tell me that- "
"I accidentally shot a grazed soldier.
only after a few attempts, you know, I never held weapons, but I finally managed to hit Bullseye. "
"With my help, of course." Andrew said giving a playful punch to the younger man's arm, and Adrian did the same.
"And I helped him ride a horse." he said with a smile and Andrew soon nodded and chuckled.
"thank you very much for trying to train us, even if that training was just a warm-up."
"Now you're welcome, now come with us.
you will meet the other soldiers who are here in the camp with us. "explained the sergeant.
"Yes, some of them are survivors of the several times of Stark's crazy charges in enemy troops."
"Blutch stop talking about Stark like that, he's a great leader!" Said the sergeant.
"And you know what I said about him is the most sincere truth." Retorted the caporal soon Blutch and Chesterfield started arguing.
and the two of the brothers just laughed at the arguing duo.

My thoughts and headcanons about Arthur and his horse, both before and after he becomes unwell. This got very long and very out of hand very quickly. I think I should've kept this for a fic, but, well:
1. Arthur takes the colt from the Adler's Ranch. He asks Mrs. Adler if she wants to keep him after all, to which she sharply replies no. Arthur keeps the Adler's horse in camp anyway; he saw Sadie sit next to him when he was grazing, brushing out his mane and tail once, too.
2. Arthur doesn't buy his own horse. Instead he catches a nice wild skewbald. He brings it back to camp. Feels like almost everyone has to comment on his choice of horse and how he'd break his neck before he can even catch up with a stagecoach he wants to rob, but well. Arthur can only shrug.
3. The filly he caught is pretty tall and has surprisingly soft gaits. Arthur never had to work with a wild horse before, but he worked with green horses enough, and it's kind of nice and a new experience, too. It takes three weeks for him to finally mount up, using a bitless bridle as the horse fusses too much otherwise and being bitless helps keep her calm and confident. Arthur finds out she's so soft in her gait it's almost like he's sitting on a sofa, and that's when he knows her name.
4. While camped in Horseshoe Overlook, Arthur takes the Adler's horse to jobs and takes Sofie in hands to hunts. She doesn't fuss too much hitched and grazing while he's out tracking, so that works. Arthur tries to be as gentle, confident and thorough as he could with her, and in a matter of weeks Sofie is used to the idea of his weight on her back and learns what Arthur means by different input of his leg or rein.
5. Sofie acts very skittish around water and refuses to cross. Arthur figures he can't force her, so maybe he should show her it can be fun. He dismounts to be on her level, gets his boots soaked, splashes water on her feet, tries to trick her into trudging deeper with sugar cubes. He ends up soaked through and through once Sofie gets the taste of splashing in the river, hitting the water surface with her hoof. After that there're no problems with crossing bodies of water; sometimes Arthur takes her the long way along the riverside just so that she can have some fun, also build her stamina up a bit.
6. Once tracking a deer that hurt its leg and was bleeding badly, Arthur runs into a pack of wolves. Sofie gets him out without so much as a wail. She still doesn't take well to the bit, and at this point Arthur's confident enough in his skill with bitless to get his point across and not hurt her by accident. After the encounter with the wolves, Arthur decides to use her for the next job. It happens sooner than he expected, as Cornwall runs them out of Valentine in a shootout.
7. Sofie proves to be very, very brave, and not too keen on trying to buck him off in danger. She has her fun, though, and Arthur lets her, as long as she isn't actively trying to make him end up on his back on the ground.
8. When Arthur is kidnapped, Sofie is very distressed. She follows the O'Driscolls, which they brush off as a horse sticking to the herd. They hitch her once they reach the hideout. She almost costs Arthur his life when he gets out of that basement. Sofie sees him and starts neighing, trotting up to him, and it's blind luck the last O'Driscoll guarding him is too surprised to alert anyone before Arthur plants a knife in his eye.
9. Sofie gets him out of there and straight to their camp. Her gallop doesn't jostle Arthur too much. Although he can't remember a thing from the road the next time he wakes up in camp, he knows Sofie got him there safe and sound.
10. Shortly after they escape to Shady Belle, Sofie's behavior changes. She's less playful on the road, seems much more careful in her stride through woods or up and down the hills and wary in general. Arthur risks the journey back to Valentine, where the stable owner seems to be the most competent veterinarian in these parts. He checks her over and promises that if something is wrong, he can't see it, and to his eye Sofie's just fine. Once he learns she's actually a broken wild horse, he brushes the matter aside completely, saying she's just getting used to her new life. It doesn't sound right to Arthur, but with no more symptoms to look into he accepts that, still keeping an eye out for any more signs.
11. After Guarma, Sofie meets him in Shady Belle. He rides her to Lakay bareback. It almost seems like her gait somehow got even softer. In camp, Charles tells him they couldn't get her to leave with them once she and other horses came home from Saint Denis.
12. Shortly after the diagnosis, when Arthur gets particularly lightheaded and Sofie balances him out from a fall, the realization hits: she's gotten more careful when she first felt he was unwell, doing her best to keep him from more harm or discomfort.
13. Arthur loses even more weight. He passes out again, but this time, his foot gets stuck in the stirrup. He visits Dr. Barnes in Saint Denis for another shot and to check the bruise on his temple. He also visits the trapper to get sheep pelt for his saddle as sitting on hard leather for too long gets unbearable and he's cold half the time he's not burning up, and the stables to buy hooded stirrups in case he black out again.
14. Arthur loses too much strength. He doesn't use the bow anymore. He still can, if not for too long, but he doesn't want to, because it makes him anxious and afraid of how weak he's becoming. The rifle in his hands is heavier than he's used to, too, but still easier to manage. He hunts and tracks on horseback now, and waiting for the game to take bait, Sofie always stands still as a statue under him. Maybe she knows if they don't catch any game, folk back in Beaver Hollow will go hungry. Maybe she doesn't. Arthur's grateful she's patient with him, staying still for hours and bearing through the sound of rifle shots with no fuss.
15. When Hamish dies, Arthur has to take a moment to decide what to do with Buell—he doesn't want to risk keeping him in camp, where anything can happen to anyone at this point. Arthur mounts Buell to ride him to Van Horn, not trusting him to not get spooked and lost in the woods here. This is also exactly when he realizes how careful and patient Sofie has been with him. Buell is quite a brute. He doesn't take easy to leg, and Arthur finds himself completely out of breath not less than two minutes later. He never uses spurs with Sofie, wanting to keep her responsive to just leg, and she always is, keeping the gait he sets for her until he asks for something else. But Buell needs constant pressure and release, and maybe every other horse except for Sofie does, too, and Arthur isn't up for that, both in physical and moral strength.
16. He leaves Buell in the hands of the stable owner, paying ahead for a year of stabling. He lets Sofie, who's gentle and careful, take him back to camp. He only has it in him to grip the horn and will himself to make it until he can pass out in his cot and not at the side of the road on the way there.
17. When Charles comes back to the peaks of Ambarino to take care of the dead, he buries Sofie's heart with Arthur.

Because I was bored I turned all the Sides into horses
And this was the end result
LOGAN: Black Arabian -Trained to be ridden English -10 years old -Moody mount, will throw you for so much as having lopsided reins -or if he disagrees with your opinion -or if he doesn’t like you -Just-don’t ride him unless you’re a very experienced rider -Throws a shitfit if you try to trailer him, he does NOT like small spaces -Lives mainly outside for this reason -Was taught many tricks to keep him occupied -(This was a mistake because he has caused a bit of damage to stables trying to amuse himself) -Won’t kick or bite, usually is just a bucker -Is on lease but still lives with the others
ROMAN: White Shire -Trained to pull -13 years old -Thomas dyed his forelock red once and he LOVED it -His forelock is now always dyed for shows -Is a diva -If he got his legs wet, he’d sulk for hours -Mud is a no-no -Saying that he will roll in it on purpose the night before a show -Always stable him before shows or he WILL make a mess of himself to spite you -Will bite and tries to kick, has a hard time getting his back legs off the ground -Has stepped on people’s feet for the Hell of it -Was raised by Thomas as a foal and as a result has and will follow him around like a puppy -This is problematic at shows where he’s broken lead ropes just to follow his trainer around
PATTON: Palomino Shetland Pony -Was trained to pull, is now retired and is just a companion horse -30 years old -Absolute. Sweetheart. -Grew up with Thomas, and will follow him around like a puppy (with Roman) -Must be stabled near Virgil or he’ll freak the fuck out -Kids adore him, he adores kids -Knows tricks -Works as a calming force for Logan (high-strung) and Virgil (high anxiety) -Can and will walk directly underneath Roman and Virgil’s bellies if they stand still long enough -Gives kisses
VIRGIL: Friesian -Was trained to be ridden western and english as well as to pull -16 years old -Background is unknown, he’s a rescue horse -Very high strung and spooky, to the point of being deadly to ride if you don’t lunge him first -Is totally unaware of how tall he is, has banged his head against many a stable door and tree branch -Wounds easily -Will never bite, kicks freely -Must be stabled near Patton, else he’ll have a meltdown -It took a month just for Thomas to touch him -One-person pony: if you aren’t Thomas go to Hell -Thomas has tried to lease him out to other people and Virgil repeatedly acted vicious jut to turn them away -As such he’s never ridden -Pulls at shows with Roman, they make an...Interesting team -If you hear horses squealing it’s usually them picking a fight with each other
DECEIT: Buckskin skewbald Thoroughbred/Arabian crossbreed -Was trained to pull -9 years old -Heaven help the poor sod that tries to get a saddle on his back -Right eye is wall-eyed (blue) -Has an attitude -#divahorse -Doesn’t trot so much as sprint -Will never kick, only bites -He’ll taunt other horses to get them to kick him though -Why? No one knows for sure -Has to be paired up with Remus, otherwise he’ll be out of control -Too smart for his own bloody good -Lives to work up Roman and Logan for his own amusement -Virgil has it in for him
REMUS: Bay Hackney horse -Trained to pull and (possibly?) be ridden western -9 years old -Has been nicknamed Mad Horse for all the shit he’s pulled in his 9 years of living -That’s also his show name -His stall has had to be horse-proofed many, many times -So many times Thomas now calls it “Remus-proofing” -Bites and kicks freely, has taken chunks out of the others before -including Roman -(especially Roman) -He and Roman have it out for each other, so they can NEVER be pastured together -He’s had to be muzzled once or twice -Do you know how hard it is to find a muzzle for a horse? One that stops biting? -He and Deceit must be teamed up, otherwise Remus won’t do a damn thing you tell him to -Nobody is allowed near him unless Thomas and/or Joan are there with them
???: Red Roan Quarter horse -Unknown age -Unknown training -Nobody knows where he came from, he just...Appeared in Remus’ pasture -The only horse that will actively and maliciously attack humans -Remus himself isn’t sure about him -There’s no known records of this horse -Thomas suspects he’s wild -Gentling procedures are in effect, but the bastard hasn’t shown many signs of softening up

As hard as he tried to puff himself up I still managed to get his saddle on him for a lunge 🤣 was a 46” girth on the first hole till he started walking and having to breathe then I got it done up some more ha ha ha 🤣 he lunged nicely in it thought he might throw in some bucks but that would take to much energy and he just wants to plod lol 😂 #cob #horse #skewbald #horsenose #micklem #stübben #thorowgood #cobsaddle https://www.instagram.com/p/Bveb87PgBou/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=o169u2e380x3

Oh, look, more Ken fic. This time he’s looking for a horse.
So far the search wasn’t going so well. Ken had decided what he wanted, a young thing that he could ride, just to get him into the swing of things again. Preferably something bomb-proof, that wouldn’t freak out while he was getting it acclimated to Argit and Zed. Just, a reliable horse with a bit of training under its belt.
He doesn’t have that kind of luck.
First had been the pretty grey mare, who had been sweet as sugar right up until he asked to give her a quick ride. The thick gloves her owner had put on so her ‘love bites’ wouldn’t hurt as much had crossed her immediately off the list.
Then was the sorrel gelding, beautiful with great conformation and a lovely blanket, but the nastiest attitude he’d ever seen. Not only had he refused to buy, he’d gone online to warn others.
And that other gelding, the skewbald, that had, like the others, been fit and fine right until the moment he wasn’t. Ken didn’t need a horse that didn’t “take well to children, women, and other animals”. It was at this point he began to wonder if there was just something wrong with horses in the area, if they were all screwed up like this.
Which meant that the next one was a gift in comparison. A bay roan mare that was adorable and healthy, with big eyes that begged for a treat and an off-center blaze. But getting her to do anything the entire time he’d been there had been a chore. She clearly didn’t enjoy being ridden, and didn’t brighten up until he cleaned her off and let her go laze about in the sun. A born pasture ornament. Which was fine, but not what he was looking for.
He did make sure to send Ben a picture though, in case he was looking for a new muse. They could afford it.
The next, a leopard appaloosa gelding with liver spots, was even better. Nice temperament, solid hooves, well trained, but his legs. His conformation was horrible, as if they hadn’t even tried to correct it when he was a foal. Ken wasn’t an expert by any means, even with his minor in Equine Science, but he’d give him maybe four years before he started becoming visibly lame with just regular usage. Yes, most people moved on from their first horse by then, selling it to get something better, but he wasn’t sure if he’d have been able to justify selling a lame horse to himself.
Ben got his picture too. (‘Wouldn’t he look so good by that mare?’)
So basically, so far he hasn’t had much luck on the horse buying scene. He’s got two options that either are or will inevitably become pasture ornaments, good ones but still, and three that he wouldn’t bring home for love or money. Ken is coming pretty close to expanding his search to other parts of the state, or upping the age range he was looking for. Right now, though, he’s resting against the hood of his car, chewing his lip and looking at the latest prospect.
She’s a pretty thing, if not as attractive as the others. A purely liver chestnut quarter horse, with good confirmation, distinctive musculature, and curious brown eyes. Her temperament is wonderful, she appears to be disinclined to spook, and she’s a good size for him. But the conditions she’s in concerned him. The paddock is small and nearly all mud. She’s keeping to the grass that’s left, but Ken is certain she’ll have soft hooves. A problem that could take a year or more to properly fix if it’s gotten bad enough.
Sighing and shaking his head, Ken stands back up and heads over to ask her owner some more questions.
He is definitely going to have to expand his search.

Gotta love when one of your non-horse-person classmates tries to tell you that roan isn’t a horse color (claiming it’s a pattern) but strawberry/red/blue roan *are* colors, and gets all up in arms about it when you tell her that if roan is a pattern, then grey, spotted, and pinto coats are patterns too (they’re not) ^.^ It’s a good thing we didn’t get into fleabitten/dapple grey, blanket/snowflake/leopard Appaloosa, cremello, champagne, chocolate, piebald, skewbald, overo, tovero, tobiano, sabino, etc or else I think her mind would’ve exploded XD

Beautiful sunny morning, shame about the wind I got blown over in the mud 🤣🤣🤣!! Tried out a new bridle on Smoosh and he seemed content didn’t mind me fiddling about fitting it to his big head and then lunged nicely, but we shall see how he feels tomorrow, weather permitting lol 😂!!! #cobhorse #muddyhorse #moulting #skewbald #horseselfie #micklem #micklembridle (at Canterbury, Kent) https://www.instagram.com/p/Btl2zPugscX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1x33spyyx6mxq
