I just wanted to thank @ghosttotheparty for letting me use their fic “Say My Name and Say It Twice (Cotton Candy Skies)” as inspiration for my latest fic “darling, you don’t have to hold it, you don’t have to be afraid.” His fic is my favorite VDS fic and one of my all-time favorite fics, so being able to write and post a work inspired by it was so much fun and I’m so happy that they agreed to this!! Please go read “Say My Name and Say It Twice (Cotton Candy Skies)” if you haven't already, it deserves so much love!!
On another note, I used some videos of live ballet performances to help guide me with this story, so those along with ghosttotheparty’s fic will be linked in this post!! <33

so i have some silly questions. ive seen you and a lot of other kp accounts talk about skam. where do i start? which is the og skam? do i start with that? are all the skams the same but in different languages? should i watch all of them or some or only one? is it ongoing or done or unfinished? where do i watch it? also what is the show about and what are its major tws?
Definitely not silly questions, but holy shit they're big ones 😂 I'll try to be as succinct as I can, with the caveat that I haven't watched all of them in their entirety and the remakes are very much NOT interchangeable despite being adaptations of the same show.
So to break it down—
What is SKAM about?: SKAM was a Norwegian show that aired from 2015-17 for four seasons. The show was set in a high school and centered primarily around two friend groups (fans usually call them the girl squad and boy squad). Each season focuses on a new main character from these friend groups and is told from their point of view, with plot arcs that range from SA to mental illness to coming-of-age struggles, but they're all very grounded and relatable teen issues told with (for the most part) a lot of empathy and hope. The seasons are pretty narratively distinct rather than having major plots stretching across multiple seasons, so while you might miss some context, you don't necessarily have to watch all the seasons or watch them in order.
Now what's really cool about SKAM, and what you unfortunately miss out on somewhat by not watching it live, is the multimedia component. The show's format is something that was never really seen before and hasn't really been seen since, at least not to the same extent. While it was airing, each scene in that week's episode went live in real time throughout the week. So for example, if a scene is meant to take place on Monday at 3:20pm in the story, that scene would be posted online on Monday at 3:20pm. Scenes could drop at literally any time, day or night, and on top of that the characters had real Instagrams that they'd post on and text conversations that would be posted too, again all in real time, so not only was there something new pretty much every day for the fandom to talk about, but all those media components (clips, Instagram posts/stories, texts, etc.) were interconnected so they all fed into the plot in important ways. At the end of the week, all the scenes would be compiled into the full episode, but you wouldn't see the other media components which really add a lot to the story even if they're not 100% essential. I think a lot of the remakes have a fan-made Tumblr where all the different types of content have been collected and put in order so you can get the full experience, so I'd definitely check them out first.
As for the remakes, all of the above applies to them too. There are a total of seven remakes, each from a different country: SKAM France (France), Druck (Germany), SKAM Italia (Italy), SKAM Austin (U.S.), SKAM España (Spain), SKAM NL (Netherlands), and wtFOCK (Belgium).
Where to start: I recommend the original Norwegian SKAM. Some seasons are better than others, and if you're just in it for the gays (I pretty much was lol) then season three is what you're looking for. It's been a while since I watched the og or any of the remakes so I'm not sure where they're available now, but that info should hopefully be pretty easy to find.
Are all the SKAMs the same but in different languages?: Sort of, but also not. Most of them follow the main plots of the og seasons but they vary widely in terms of how closely they adhere to the characters, tone, themes, etc. SKAM España, for example, is SUPER different to the point that it barely resembles the original most of the time (and it's GREAT). Also some of the remakes didn't get to cover all four seasons (SKAM Austin and SKAM NL only got two seasons and I'm still in mourning), while some remakes covered all four AND seasons beyond that (SKAM France just finished its tenth season).
Should I watch all of them or some or only one?: Everyone has remakes they like more or less than others, it's just individual preference, but they're all worth checking out imo. After watching the original, I'd probably recommend SKAM France, Druck, or wtFOCK first as a taste-tester, but genuinely all of them have their strengths and their flaws. My personal favorites are SKAM France (for the cinema and acting), wtFOCK (for the music and general vibes), and SKAM NL (for the cinematography, acting, directing, basically everything).
Ongoing or finished?: Most of the remakes are finished, with the exception of SKAM Italia (which just started season 5 like two days ago actually) and mayyyybe SKAM France and Druck, which both had seasons finish airing recently.
Major TWs: This is hard because the remakes are, like I said, distinct from each other, so some TWs won't apply to all of them, and especially with the remakes that have gotten additional seasons, they have more than the original. I also haven't watched all of them from start to finish so I don't know all the things to look out for.
For the original, you'll definitely encounter drug/alcohol use and abuse, SA and SH, Islamophobia, homophobia, bullying, as well as depictions of mental illness that could be triggering. The show has its heavy moments, but it's not gratuitous about it imo and at the end of the day still manages to be uplifting despite talking about some really serious topics, which is a feat tbh. If you have questions about TWs for specific seasons or remakes I can try to go in a bit more depth. Each remake (and the original) also has a fandom wiki with episode/season summaries that give you a good idea of what to expect, so that could be useful as well if you want to watch out for anything in particular.
——
I think I got everything! If you have more questions about SKAM, totally happy to help as I know it can be confusing at first to get up to speed with it all lol. And definitely hmu if you want deets about the gay seasons, which are the only ones I've consistently watched because...well, I'm gay obviously lol.

Well in this case, I was referring to 🇧🇪. (Mainly for the K*to thing.)
But ofc 🥖 is a genre of hyperbole in itself. 🇩🇪 did so amazing then screwed it up at the very last bit. The jury’s still out on 🇪🇸 (but the s is silent). It wasn’t very much involved in SKAM 🍕, so I can’t say a whole lot about that. I think we can forget about that one time 🇺🇸 also wanted to join the party. And there was SKAM 🇳🇱, alas, the one that was over before it had properly started. 🥲 (curtesy of Dutch public broadcasting management 😤 -> hint: it’s a mess)
And last but definitely not least: there’s the og, the mothership, SKAM 🇳🇴. No words, chef’s kiss, a masterpiece. (but even that one had its quirks)
That all being said: I for one cannot wait until Asian countries finally pick up on this brilliant (ahem 🤫) format! 🙃 🇰🇷🇹🇭🇯🇵🇹🇼🇻🇳🇵🇭
~ anonchor ⚓️
thank you for clearing that up anon lol
I only saw season 3 of skam belgium but I do remember there was some controversy around the following seasons. good thing I dropped it lol.
skam france remains my favorite remake, I just loved the cinematography and the cast; I liked it the the most out of all, even though it was the one that felt the least like the original lol. but what can I say. I haven't seen seasons 7-10 yet though.
spain, netherlands and usa are the ones I have not seen at all. I heard the american one is trash and I can imagine why so I won't touch that one lmao. I might watch the other 2 at some point though.
an asian adaption would be very interesting. I'm voting for taiwan because I feel like they're the only ones who can get this format right lmao. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Robbe knew his best friend. He could see when he was sad, sense when he was angry, feel when he was happy. It was a skill he prided himself on. So when Lucas came along, Robbe could tell that Jens was in love.
He saw the looks Jens gave the new boy from across the courtyard, full of awe and yearning, but every time Jens turned back to their lunch table, Robbe pretended he didn’t notice.
Robbe also knew how scary it was to recognize that what you felt was love. So he didn’t tease, or laugh, or judge.
He knew it was what Jens needed.

how could i fall when i am lifted by every word you say to me?
“Hey, Luca,” he said, a smile gracing his lips. “Did you get my texts?”
There was no reply from the other boy.
“Luc?”
A little sob crackled through the line, followed by a sharp intake of breath. Jens’ eyebrows furrowed and he pressed the phone closer to his ear, concerned.
“Lucas? What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice lined with panic.
“I don’t-” the voice faltered as Lucas let out another upsetting cry. “I can’t- I can’t breathe.”
Jens’ feet acted before his mind fully comprehended the sentence, hastily guiding him down the sidewalk on autopilot. “You’re okay, I’m right here. Are you still at your apartment?”
Lucas made a choked sound of confirmation, followed by more heartbreaking sobs. “Need- I need you. Please.”

Or, Lucas has a panic attack, but Jens is there for him.

I'm tired of shows always taking place in the US (or England), give me more shows in Asian, African, European, or South American countries. Or Australia (the continent, though we call it Oceania here but according to the internet the continent is called Australia)
Here are some of my own recommendations:
- Into The Night (Netflix, made in Belgium but has multiple languages and takes place all over the world)
Dystopian / Thriller
The sun turns deadly, causing a small group of passengers on a plane to keep flying, trying to avoid the sunlight. The longer it takes, the more the world is ruined. Can they find a safe haven?
- Dance Academy (Australia)
Drama / Dance / Teen Romance
The show follows a group of students at a dance academy where they teach ballet, but also some other styles of dancing. Filled with drama and competitions.
- Madre Solo hay Dos (Mexico, English title is Daughter From Another Mother, on Netflix)
Drama / Comedy / hint of romance /LGBTQ+
Two completely different women give birth at the same time in the same room and do not get along. But then they find out that, after having bonded with their babies, they have been accidentally switched. Switching them back is painful, so instead they start to raise them together. But their lives are so different from each other that is starts to cause issues.
- Als De Dijken Breken (Netherlands, though I'm not sure if it's available for international viewing)
Thriller
The Netherlands is protected from the sea by dikes, but what happens if they break? Big parts if the country would be gone in a matter of hours. In this show, the dikes break, causing chaos as everyone tries to get to safety.
(As a dutch person living near dikes this was so scary to watch lol)
- Miraculous: tales of ladybug and chat noir (France)
Children (but fun for adults as well) / animation
Two children live double lives as superheroes, completely unaware of each other's identities. Feelings are involved, causing a somewhat love quartet even though only two people are involved. Each episode the two save the city, or the world, against new villains, which are regular citizens turned evil by the main villain.
- XO, Kitty (South Korea, Netflix)
Drama / Romance / Spinoff to All The Boys I've Loved Before / LGBTQ+
Wanting to learn more about her late mother, and to reunite with her long distance boyfriend, Kitty goes to the same boarding school in Seoul as her mother went to. But things aren't what she expected. Secrets unfold, not everyone is telling the truth. On top of that, she also gets a sexuality crisis.
- Doogie Kamealoha MD (Hawai'i - while this is an American state, it is still severely unrepresented in media, and due to its history of being a country/republic of its own before Americans imprisoned its queen and declared it as a state of the US, I'm still adding this - Disney+)
Extremely intelligent Lahela is a 16-year-old doctor, nicknamed Doogie because of the resemblance to the TV Show. But being different than others her age is difficult. Juggling social life and the busyness of working at the hospital is a true challenge, but she tries to make the most of it.
Bonus: shows I don't watch or stopped watching
- Nowhere Boys (Australia, also has a movie)
- the Skam shows (several countries)
- Young Royals (Sweden)

will you ever visit any of the young royals or skam locations?
I doubt it. Sweden I actually spent 3 weeks in. It’s a nice place but kinda crossed it off my list and wasn’t so taken to go back. Plus it’s soo expensive. Not saying it’s not worth a visit I am just saying 3 weeks was good for me. There still so many places I haven’t been too that I have on my top 10 list.
Ummm skam is a huge universe and I have been to a lot of the locations featured in France, Italy, Germany, Spain,NL, Norway and Austin. Just as a tourist exploring the city. Like I have been to or around certain shooting locations in all the major cities featured in these remakes. Like certain train stations or neighborhoods or nightlife locations.
Belgium I have also been too but never Antwerp. Belgium would be the kinda of place I would probably go back to on my way to France or the Netherlands because I have friends in both places. So it would be more so a “hey the border is decently close so I’ll make a detour” but it’s not a place I would craft an entire trip around. Once again no issues with belgium it’s just I got a lot of places I want to see and it’s not high on the list.

Oh, I kinda have the same request, but for Dutch content! Not necessarily streamers, I'm only starting my learning journey, but I'll be moving to the Netherlands soon and would like to watch anything with subtitles if possible. Now my only idea is watching dutch skam, but can you please share your favourite ccs and content in general?
I've been thinking abt this since I got this ask I don't think I watch even a single dutch creator 😭 like the popular dutch creators just dont make my type of content at all, really since I spoke the language I've just watched everything in english oops
I know one of my friends watches gamemeneer and he seems pretty decent from what I can tell but I don't personally watch it lmao
The only dutch content I really consume is this television show called Wie is de Mol which is basically if among us was a tv show? the whole country is obsessed with it, and there's a YouTube channel that subtitles the episodes but other than that I'm coming up blank sorry anogie
