villain discourse is so annoying.

every once in a while when i scroll through the notes on a post about a villain or antagonist who's a fandom favourite, the notes are filled with 'but you know he killed people, right... killing people is bad... if you think this fictional guy is cool and funny and iconic then you're basically a hybristophile because they're a serial killer. you're normalizing serial killers omg. murder is baddddd'

yes, i know that murder is bad, i'm not six months old. and excuse me? it's giving 'women will read books and get ideas' which is maybe not far off because most fic writers and readers are female, and the stereotypical fanfic writer is a teenage girl.

besides, literature and drama always loved the bad guy. re: greek tragedies, crime and punishment, etc. i think everyone on tumblr needs to read some actual books for once.

so many people have this disney-fied, marvel-i-fied idea of what storytelling is, they believe that every story has to be an aesop's fable and adhere to the hays code.

if you're looking to fiction for a moral compass instead of (sometimes ugly!) truths about the human condition, you're looking in the wrong place.

seriously not trying to be elitist about fanfiction sites, but can someone who actually uses wattpad please explain why every fic i click on forces me to scroll through fancasts and moodboards and sassy things the characters say and people explaining that inspiration for the fic before i get to the first chapter. i’m guessing the site doesn’t give people a space on their profile to put non-writing stuff. or maybe it’s just the culture there. i don’t mind extras in the A/N’s but the first chapter almost never being the first chapter is just annoying.

i’ve tried to read on that damn site for years but every time i rage quit. and the search functionality is trash tier.

again, not trying to be elitist but it’s very annoying when i just want to read fanfiction and end up being assaulted with pictures. ao3 allows you to put pictures, but people don’t abuse it.

and then, the ui is horrible and seems to force writers into doing tiny chapters because the text box is a third of the screen for absolutely no reason. it also doesn’t put the date the first and last chapters were posted so i can tell if it’s been abandoned, finished, or still updating. infuriating.

The scenario entitled consumerist people in fandom have created for themselves is so funny to me. You have write for yourself'd fic writers into literally not giving a shit.

All the time recently, I see people complaining that people won't write for their ship/headcanon, which deserves to be written for because [reason, reason, reason], meanwhile never leaving comments on fic that have ship/headcanon, much less recommending or reblogging fic posts much less even hitting the like or kudos button.

The only people who continue to write fic are those who literally do not give a shit because they know whenever they post they're lucky to get one comment. Why would we cater to you, random internet person??? Why? For what?

So if you're wondering why alternate ship/headcanon is so popular, it's probably because people like it or it's a small pocket of fandom where readers still interact with writers instead of treating us like tiktok/IG content creators.

If you want more of what you like, write it yourself and/or support writers who already do and stop expecting everyone to drop what they're doing and cater their hobby to what you like.

so last Friday I was walking past a large window in my department buildings on my way to lab and someone looked up and kind of nodded and me and I thought I recognized him so I waved back

Today I was leaving lab to go have lunch and someone who could possibly be the same person waved at me and I just stared blankly back at him.

Then again it could just be a friendly stranger since my facial recognition (esp with masks) is that bad.

Every time I see people talking about ‘psychopathy’ like it’s a real diagnosable thing and not a bullshit social construct it makes me die a little bit inside.

I mean technically if you're looking for an actual medical thing that corresponds, it's ASPD, but the reason ASPD exists in the first place as a diagnosis is because it is really, really hard to make any objective measure of the main traits of 'psychopathy.' Which is why in pop culture everyone loves to 'diagnose' storybook villains and violent criminals as 'psychopaths', because it's just so subjective.

The main problem with ‘psychopathy’ is that it only exists because people wanted to say that everyone evil must have a specific mental disorder, so they should make a mental disorder based around the common perception of evil.

Which is so wrong as both a scientific and moral judgment. Notice that no one ever 'diagnoses' a nice/moral/kind person (real or fictional) with psychopathy, because the idea of 'psychopathy' is so firmly entwined with evil.

Please know that no psychological/psychiatric institution considers psychopathy a diagnosable medical condition.
