Parallel and non-parallels: the skewed lines of SJ and og!LBH
Hey, hey! Don’t we love comparing Shen Jiu (resident meow meow/bristling stray) to Bingge (poor wet dog who deserved better from life)? But for fun, I wanted to explore their differences.
The free and the unfree
SJ was a slave. LBH was not.
Okay, shittiness of life is not strictly dependent on class (e.g. by Confucian values, farmers were meant to be more valuable members of society than merchants, but there were plenty of rich merchants and poor farmers) but the distinction here is important because it changes how society perceives them, and how they perceive themselves. LBH was poor, yes. His childhood was tragic, yes. But he was regarded as a person, whereas SJ was property.
So some thoughts on how this fine but important distinction goes on to drastically change their worldviews down the line.
Warning: #PsychoAnalysingFictionalCharactersWeBarelyKnowAnythingAbout
This post is heavily injected with my biases and headcanons. Feel free to complain.
Moments of unnecessary kindness vs moments of unnecessary cruelty
QJL – as a master to a slave – was under no societal obligation to give SJ anything. Remember what he says?
If it weren’t for our family, you’d still be on the streets even now, playing a beggar and swindling for a living. That you don’t lack for clothes, that you can even read and write when you’re only pretender trash – who gave all that to you?
This is the lie that QJL constructs: that SJ is worthless, that he has no right to complain about mistreatment, and that anything above a beating is a debt to be repaid. And in-world, there is some truth to this statement. He could easily have kept SJ around as a ball to kick around and a playmate for QHT with no consequence. But he didn’t. He elevated his status and gave him skills that would later become fundamental to his power and privilege, setting him on the path to the kind of decent life which would have been completely unavailable to him as a slave. There’s kindness here, but it’s false kindness – a tool QJL uses to justify his behaviour and put SJ down.
Meanwhile SJ – as a peak lord – has an obligation to teach his disciples. And LBH has always held some rights (if severely limited by the fact he was poor) – his tragic past is more likely to illicit sympathy rather than an arrest warrant (1).  YQY shows (small amounts of) discomfort at SJ’s mistreatment of disciples and asks him to be more lenient. By default, SJ is expected to give LBH an access to a better future. Instead, he actively tries to squash his potential and ruin his cultivation.
So to summarise, QJL’s treatment of SJ is characterised by unnecessary kindness within default cruelty, while SJ’s treatment of LBH is characterised by unnecessary cruelty within default kindness. This screws them both over, but in different ways.
The urge to reject, the urge to protect
SJ firmly rejects kindness. To him, kindness is nothing but a knife in a disguise, a weapon to humiliate and degrade him. Even to those he cares about, SJ refuses to demonstrate a single shred of good intention. I don’t give a damn about all that loyalty crap, he says to YQY, despite demonstrating over and over that he does in fact give a damn. He gives many damns indeed. He also refuses to reveal that he helped LQG, berating SQH for even trying. (2)
SJ is even worse at accepting help – it is shameful he thinks, to regard women as saviours (3). It is interesting that in SJ’s most vulnerable moment, the closest he ever comes to demonstrating his feelings for YQY, he says:
I have vicious inclinations, I’m filled with resentment. Now Luo Binghe wants me to die a painful death, and I have only myself to blame.
This doesn’t feel like an evil villain speech. This feels like someone desperately trying to push the other person away so that they wouldn’t be dragged down with them. In his moments of care, he is unkind. Because kindness, for SJ, is never care.
Meanwhile, LBH returns kindness with kindness, cruelty with cruelty. And of course, that makes sense, right? The kindness that LBH has received in his childhood, either from his adopted mother or NYY, is scant against the backdrop of cruelty but it is genuine (if not effective at alleviating his suffering). And while he has a bucket load of issues, he doesn’t have the unique SJ brand of hating those he loves, or rejecting offers of help (even if it is from people who are obviously manipulating him for merit – looking at you, QWY.)
But this is og!LBH’s downfall. All of his self-worth is built on collecting and dishing out kindness (=women in Bingge’s dictionary) like pokemons, leading to this rather pitiful worldview:
Bing-ge clicked his tongue, saying disdainfully: “Who let him be so useless, that he actually doesn’t have a single woman.”
He is unable to bond with people beyond something superficial, ending up with a bloated harem on which his places his worth but clearly doesn’t make him happy.
The rejection of self vs the rejection of fate
SJ is (as SQQ eloquently puts it) a poser. He is characterised by a rejection of his past and a rejection of his self.
This is in part a necessity – he is a criminal, from the lowest levels of society. But SJ goes beyond just hiding his past. He puts on airs of an aloof immortal, an act which SJ picked up in the Qiu manor, perhaps even instilled in him by QJL himself. And it’s not just mannerisms:
Shen Qingqiu finally understood how the original flavor’s personality, where he flattered you in the face then stabbed you in the back, had developed. Most probably he’d picked it up from Young Master Qiu through osmosis…
And why shouldn’t he copy Young Master Qiu? Three years of his life has taught him that nobody will treat a slave with decency, but they will a young master, no matter how unpalatable (4).
A piece of shit can’t be polished, QJL tells him, and while SJ rejects this narrative (I’m human, he says) he always come back to it. YQY is a dragon leaping into the sky; SJ is a failure unable to attain his potential. YQY is a righteous sect leader; he is an evil piece of scum. He believes himself broken and worthless. He rejects what he believes is his ‘true self’ and covers it over with a mask… but he is always plagued by his past. He tries to cover up – to play the respected scholar, the aloof immortal – inevitably falls short, becomes bitter and jealous, hates himself for his ‘naturally evil tendencies’, tries to cover up… and so continues to trod along this downwards spiral to a bitter and bloody end.
Meanwhile, LBH rejects fate. Very dramatically in fact:
None of that is important. It’s enough to just do what I want. Fate either never existed at all – or it’s something I should trample beneath my feet.
(This is bingmei, not bingge, but it’s not hard to imagine bingge has a similar outlook on life.)
More concretely, LBH rejects being under other people’s influence. His entire life is a sandwich of great fortune and great misfortune, and importantly his misfortune comes from others oppressing him, his fortune comes from his inherent abilities and talents. Despite all his setbacks, he finds himself powerful and capable, with people (women) literally throwing themselves at him.
SJ never really tried to change LBH in the way QJL changed SJ. Instead he tried to destroy him (within the bounds of his role as peak lord). SJ found power in part by accepting what QJL had taught him. LBH found it by turning his back on SJ, firstly by learning demonic cultivation behind his back, then leaving him altogether (not by his choice, but still).
Whereas SJ desperately sought to maintain an air of civility (ironically upholding the systems he suffered under), the height of LBH’s blackening is a rejection of pretences… and thus a rejection of boundaries. (He literally brings down the system.) In an embodiment of this (interestingly at a point where his behaviour is arguably as close to Bingge as it gets), Bingemei says:
If Shizun sees me as no better than a beast either way, I might as well live up to expectations.
His misbelief is that obtaining power and crushing obstacles will make him happy, because relying on his own capabilities made him less miserable in the past. Of course that misbelief ultimately causes him to be extremely miserable.
The longing for connection
Both stories are a tragedy, but they are different tragedies intricately tied to their origins. SJ is the slave who stabbed his master in the stomach. LBH is the disciple whose master pushed him down a cliff.
But coming back full circle, SJ and og!LBH are united by a lack of substantial human connection. SJ because he rejects himself and thus pushes everyone else away. LBH because he rejects others and thus never opens himself up to anyone, despite there being ample people willing to do an awful amount for him (#UnderappreciatedOfficeLadySHL).
And on the theme of parallels, Bingmei is a Bingge who was able to believe that someone chose him, from the bottom of his heart. Meanwhile, a major part of SY’s arc was breaking free of roles such as ‘villain’ and 'protagonist'. When we accept others and accept ourselves, when we build healthy relationships with the people around us, life can be better.
Extra
Yah know, I agree that any kind of SJ redemption (and I root for a SJ redemption) must have SJ learning to love himself (there’s plenty of wonderful fics in this vein)... but I also feel like a big part of his redemption has to be first understanding and then truly rejecting the narratives drilled into him by QJL/WYZ. I dunno, I think people should critique QJL more.
Footnotes
Okay, LBH past does resolve a lot around how he is bullied unfairly, by people more privileged than him, similarly to SJ. I will admit the parallels are probably bigger than the differences here, including their interactions with QHT/NYY.
Caveat, he also does this before his experiences at the Qiu manor, so if QJL did play a part in this, it was to exacerbate an existing personality trait.
Although this overlaps with his toxic ideas of masculinity as well. I will make a post of this… soon.
Rather tragically, this is misbelief. In SVSSS, QHT announces to the world that SQQ is (maybe) a freed slave and everyone conveniently forgets about it the next day. Even LPM doesn’t use that against him.

I love SVSSS, but I am very sure that somewhere half way in MXTX decided to fully change her plans for the story, which turned it into an inconsistent mess that is making people constantly argue now about the characterisations and themes in the novel.
Because the story starts out as a satire and points out that SY is a shitty internet hater and neet, who is designed that way to make fun of these super hateful reddit bros. Yet halfway in that whole part of his personality just never gets mentioned any more and he never learns anything either or changes his behaviour.
Same with how MXTX throughout the whole story makes all these points about SJ actually not being the scum villain he was painted to be in PIDW. Like having SQH mention that he is a virgin, him never having lusted after women, it being revealed that he did not kill LQG, and such stuff. Yet it actually never gets acknowledged at all from SY as the POV character or the story itself.
And don't even get me started on the inconsistent mess that is YQY's entire characterisation.
So my only guess is that MXTX did genuinely start out with the satire idea and that SY was supposed to be the butt of the joke. As in "Hateful and transphobic reddit bro who objectifies young women has to take it up the ass after becoming a bottom in a BL, lol! 🤪"
But halfway in she wanted it to actually become a proper BL, but has written herself into a corner with SY's character flaws and also the justification of him being in SJ's body when SJ wasn't a scum villain like claimed. So she simply dropped these plot points. Otherwise I can not understand the huge inconsistencies. And also why she always seems to ignore SVSSS's existence.

"gruesome, that someone so handsome should care"
it's the 1930s in the north of england & george russell is a horrible goose 20yo with a big chip on his shoulder. he's in service for a rich family with a big estate, and hates it; he used to dream of going to university but had to leave school at 14 (crucially for the characterisation of our boy i should note he didn't want to go to uni to STUDY, he just longs to be rich and full of leisure). anyway it's a rare afternoon off and he's out riding his bicycle, miles off into the hills in the remote and windy heart of the world, feeling almost free: until he gets a flat tyre.
he's pushing his limping bike along, cursing himself for not listening to his mum and carrying his little repair kit with him, wondering how many hours it'll take to get back to Fuckface Hall, when a Duesenberg Model SJ pulls alongside him. this is a FANCY CAR and the man driving it is like no one george has seen before: clearly not white, for one thing, and clearly RICH rich, for another, in a louche bohemian way that would horrify the Fuckface Hall inhabitants. he's wearing sunglasses and a little scarf around his neck and he smiles like something is very funny and he's drinking from a flask and every instinct george has is shrieking DANGER. but the man says his name is alex, and he offers george a lift...
of course alex is very seductive and they have ill-advised sex next to a hedge and george is HORRIBLY conflicted about it because it feels incredible but it's WRONG and he's not like that--he's going to get married and have children, like a normal person, he's not--he's not one of those men--he's ejaculating into a hawthorn bush while getting buggered from behind. ANYWAY. he consoles himself at least he'll never see alex again.
obviously next month who should turn up at Fuckface Hall as a guest but Nice Car Alex :):):)

hi! do you ever feel like the bingqiu fandom is binghe biased? like a lot of the time its giving.. “wow binghe is our little precious bun who deserves the world and more! ..oh and stinky neet loser sqq is so blessed to have him lul” it feels unfair towards sqq :( it makes me sad hes no ones fave but thats okay like whatever right? but even when its bingqiu hes treated like an afterthought. like we have binghe fans criticising sqq for not doing more, sj fans are frankly delusional, sqh fans think hes “too mean” to their precious hamster, liushen fans only like him bc hes a good hole/dick for lqg (obligatory “not all men” lol) idk i only follow a handful of svsss twt accs because no one seems to like him, he feels either tolerated or treated as a gag character lol 🥹
i just dislike a lot of fanon bingqiu i think? i read all the books before hopping on twitter and i see some absolute rancid takes on there like the woobification of Shaun(tm) qinghua and jiumei.. which is easy enough to avoid tbf so whatever floats their boat idc. but when i follow bingqiu accs, it feels like OC x OC rather than ~bingqiu~ if that makes sense? like i LOVE the manipulative crybaby domtop x flustered thin face subby pillow princess they have going on!! and fanon bingqiu is just.. not it? and obv id never send hate or anything (i just block and keep it moving) but it makes it kinda sucky when the fandom is already teeny tiny and a large chunk of the fandom isnt what i envisioned/expected i guess which is so odd! when they essentially erase canon!! if it’s like some queerbaity ship or whatever, people can characterise them however they want but its like CANON how they act/are in bed/etc and its all taken away!!! idk im probably just whining sorry 😭
(i included all my thoughts here sorry for the spam!!)
hey, thanks for stopping by!! I definitely know what you mean with regards to SQQ, but I will assure you that there are very much still plenty of dedicated "sqq mains" out there. My sphere of influence on twitter is heavily biased toward people for whom sqq is their favourite character, so maybe I'm not getting a representative sample of the fandom overall, but he's definitely a very well loved character and has more than his fair share of people who do him justice in their writing and for whom he's their primary blorbo!! I remember posting this on reddit a while back and more than half of the responses (though admittedly a small sample size) had him as their fave. So, I don't think he's without appreciation!
But with that said, I do get where you’re coming from. I’m not gonna talk about readers who take his actions in bad faith and actively dislike him (HOW??), but as you’ve said, even among people who do like him, we don’t always understand him as well as we could. Most fans do get on some level that he’s an unreliable narrator, but it’s still very common for people to take him at face value and completely miss his depth. He’s a funny little guy with amusing narration, but he’s also kind and selfless, and he’s also smart and witty, and obnoxious and annoying, and frankly pretty insensitive, and deeply, deeply traumatised—and a million other things! He has layers.
I think all popular characters in fandom will inevitably start getting boiled down to a few key traits. And as somebody who’s been writing fic for 15 years, it’s really hard not to let your own biases colour your portrayal? I absolutely do it with SQQ!! I focus on his kinder, warmer aspects and downplay his flaws, I’ll readily admit that. We all get drawn to a favourite character for a certain trait, and that trait becomes the grit around which our interpretations form. If you’re somebody that likes silly characters, you’re going to write SQQ and dial his silliness up to eleven. If you like kind characters, you’ll write SQQ with emphasis on his kindness. None of these traits are OOC in and of themselves, but if you start to only read fanfic and don’t revisit the source material, you can get lost in what’s popular and forget all the depth that actually made them interesting in the first place. And once you’ve grown attached to a particular version of the characters in your head, it can be really hard to let go of it. I don’t really know where I’m going with this, but I'll add that I think protagonists are just particularly prone to this happening because they're usually the one the audience relates to most.
Idk if any of that really addresses the stuff you were talking about. You mentioned dom top Binghe/pillow princess sqq and to be honest I’m kind of reluctant to talk about this in depth because I’ve received negative comments in the past for supposedly being anti-bottom Binghe, when all I’ve ever said on this matter is that I think it’s a bit weird to insist that “I’m scared of hurting you so I might as well let you do it” is proof that Binghe is canonically a bottom. The fact that someone found that statement so threatening to their view of the characters that they would go to my ao3 page, click on the first fic they saw that happened to feature bottom SQQ and leave their holier-than-thou anonymous opinion there is just bizarre to me.
To be honest tho, it tends to be Binghe characterisation that puts me off moreso than Shen Qingqiu. The only SQQ characterisation that truly bothers me is when people write him as willing to hurt Binghe, or willing to do anything with underage Binghe, but there is a LOT of Binghe stuff that I’m sensitive too. Idk if you read this thread of mine but like, even my friends whom I love make “Binghe stalking/imprisoning/"atticwifing" SQQ” jokes and these bother me way more than any random stranger saying SQQ would get off on spanking Binghe.
And like, it’s kind of hard because objectively, Binghe is a very dark character, so it doesn't feel particularly OOC to say he would do those things, but it's about framing. It bothers me when the emphasis is on how fucked up he is and not how hard he's trying, because it implies a level of futility that I just don’t think is there in canon. To me the beauty of him is in how much doing right by SQQ doesn't come naturally to him, but he ultimately decides to do it anyway because he wants SQQ to be happy. (I feel it needs to be said that I don't mean this in a judgy "if you write dark Binghe you don't understand him and are a bad person" way. Just that I myself can't handle that, and I strongly disagree if you think it's where Bingqiu's relationship is headed).
but idk, I've found my corner and I'm very happy here. I actually don't read fic as often as you'd think, mostly because I am sooooo picky, so I totally get where you're coming from :) but the fandom is still decently sized and very diverse, so there are always going to be at least a few people who share your feelings, if you can find them!

Can we trust databooks and chapter's covers? Did Kishimoto write them?
Like some databooks claim that Sasuke and Karin were in romance, Sakura used to have crush on Sasuke, Sakura filled Sasuke's lonely existence with love. On cover of chapter 363 it is mentioned that Sasuke left or threw away love and ss think it means he left/threw away his love for Sakura.
Haiyya.
No. Databooks, novels, games etc are not canon. NONE of them. Dot. Period. Kishi didn't write them. One of those few pages, where Kishi wrote Sasuke saying that the kiss tasted like miso, that apparently was written by Kishi and that was the reason it was written in first person. But honestly, you can go ahead and disregard that as well if you want. It seriously doesn't matter.
What matters is the story and the story only. Kishi personally wrote parts one and two, Boruto movie, Gaiden and those few extra chapters, one as a pretext for Road to ninja movie and the one where Naruto misses his hokage ceremony. And the one as a pretext to The Last where Kiba and his dog are the MCs. And a couple of pages where Naruto takes Hinata on a date.
Databooks are compiled by the editors. Why else would it talk about things that blatantly go against the story and the actual characterisation? Only people in the fandom, who want to go five steps deeper, have the time and patience to read the databooks. They are just extra material provided by SJ for fans as fanservice. It boosts publicity and keeps the fans interested. That's how any media business works. Just like novels and games which are merchandise. They are NOT canon and they are not to be taken seriously. When you read Harry Potter, what's canon for you? The actual books or the games based on them or the fanfiction based on them? You think the creator has the time to put that kind of effort and time that he already has a shortage of in derivatives of the original work? Kishi sometimes draws the covers of the novels or poster art etc, because he is under the contract by SJ. The novels have his name and the name of the actual writer of the novels written on the cover. Kishi's because he is the original creator of the characters. He has no participation in the actual stories.
He supervises Boruto, and he also was the creative story supervisor of The Last, where he said in an interview that he didn't write the romance bits of it, because he felt embarrassed to make two of his characters, that he thought of as his own children, kiss. Lol. He sure didn't feel embarrassed when he drew a naked Sai and Sasuke performing full on sexual foreplay in fucking canon. Also, Hinata's and Sakura's characters in it are pretty much in character.
But people who understand Kishi's writing know why he does the things that he does and says the things that he says. ALL of it pans out logically. A lot of it because he wrote a gay love story in a limiting genre such as shounen, which itself was a brave and risky thing to do, so he has to be careful about what he says in the interviews. And a lot of times, he just runs his mouth, and why won't he? He wrote such a great story diligently for fifteen fucking years and he can't even talk about it freely because of the limitations of this genre. He wanted to write something different, something that hasn't been done in shounen before, so he wrote a gay love story, which reads like it comes from such a deep and personal and emotional place, but he had to sacrifice other things for it. For example, the ending.
He says other stuff too in his interviews, the snarky stuff, that he says about Sakura and Hinata, tongue in cheek, because he is petty and he enjoys it and he also looks down upon people who aren't able to see his true intentions. Because of their own projection. And I don't mind it honestly. His hands were tied. So if this is the way for him to take his frustrations out, so be it. It's partly the reason he wrote Gaiden. He could have written it so differently, it was a new angle, he wrote new elements in it, but he chose not to. He decimated SS in it. Because he wanted to. Because he couldn't care less for SS. And he has never shown anything but disdain for Sakura's character consistently.
You know how he would feel for the SS stans? The same thing he felt and said for Sakura's seiyuu who was just so excited for Sarada's character, the result and reason for SS. Heh.
Mockery. It's pretty consistent too.
You can go ahead and stamp it up on your mind, only the original manga is canon. Plus few other things mentioned above. What Kishi wrote. Nothing else matters. Absolutely nothing.
As for chapter 363, this.
Tumblr media
Guys. Do you really think Sasuke said this for Sakura? What does your understanding indicate?
With all due respect, I need to say this. You guys are just way too gullible. SS are one of the craziest and most delusional fandoms in the history of fandoms, so much so that, its own creator mocks it relentlessly.
Do you really think Sasuke means Sakura when Kishi talks about his love?? For real?
Who is Sasuke's one and only.....friend? Who is the ONLY one Sasuke needs to 'cut off' to be truly alone? Who became Sasuke's 'closest friend' which Sasuke himself said was very significant for him? Who is his 'Usuratonkachi' which is his word in Kishi's most favourite panel, a conclusive, final panel that he had already thought of years before the manga ended? Who is the person Sasuke protects and cares for at the cost of his own goals and ambitions, no matter how small the threat, and even almost died for without a second thought? Whom does his body move for on its own? Who is the person he shed happy tears for? Who is the person he resonated with, who related his loneliness with, and who felt warm and fuzzy for, who reminded him of his bonds with his family, his core motivation?
Now who is the person he apathetically attempted several times to get rid of in part two? Who is the person he called annoying and was utterly unimpressed with, who got called annoying by him consistently? Who was the person he said he had no reason to love and that person has no reason to love him? Who was the person he couldn't care less for and left to die in lava dimension but rescued Naruto even when he didn't need to be rescued? Who is the person he cannot even respect as a fighter, who is the person he can't even bother to answer the queries of? Who is the person he can't even bother to thank or apologize to properly? Who is the person he clearly said in reunion that he had already cut off his bonds with? Who is the person he doesn't see for 12 years? Who is the person he is never happy to see, who doesn't even smile for?
Also, what do you understand by love? What does love mean? What do you feel when you love someone?
Someone with whom you resonate deeply with, with whom you share your loneliness, whom you would give your life for and whom you would protect tooth and nail at the expense of your own life in order to sustain their goals and dreams, to have them live at the expense of your own ambition, someone whom you smile and laugh with, someone who makes you feel like family, warm and cared for?
OR
Someone who you show at best some friendliness but then at their lack of understanding and empathy makes it easy for you to cut off your bonds with? Someone whom you can't respect? Someone whose intelligence and instincts you can't trust? Someone whom you can't even take seriously?
Do you really need me to answer these questions? For real?
Do you really cannot see something as crystal clear as this? Would you really let yourself be manipulated by silly ass SS who Kishi himself made the laughingstock of the fandom? Why do you give them so much credit? Honestly, if this was some experimental cinema that you needed explaining, I would have done it. I do explain the more indirect parts of it anyway. But you seriously gotta be smarter than that guys.
SS have NOTHING except for their crazy ass delusions. Trust your instincts. Trust Kishi's writing. He is the freaking creator. Who would you believe, him, the one who wrote this story or SS who come up with crazy ass garbage bin metas? Give yourself some credit.
I have like sixty repetitive asks just on the topic of SS said this, SS said that, and you guys ask this to every SNS analysis blog there is. And they all pretty much say the same thing. And why wouldn't they? Because that's what Kishi meant you to read. It's hardly rocket science. It's so goddamn clear for everyone to see. But you guys are still so goddamn insecure.
Even casual fans can see it's about SNS and both SS and NH are last minute shit for the sake of Boruto. How?
Common fucking sense.
SS have to be delusional to believe in their ship because they literally have NOTHING else. And they say shit like this and you believe it willy nilly.
Forget SS. Read the manga for yourself. Make your own conclusions. I don't mind explaining stuff but I draw a line at spoonfeeding shit that is already clear as crystal. What do you want me to do? Teach you the alphabet? English? Words? Sentences? You want me to be your kindergarten teacher?
Seriously. Stop. Doubting. Yourselves. Kishi's story might be a little indirect but it's not incomprehensive. Really, it's not difficult. For the most part, it's pretty straightforward. For the rest, I am here and I would do my best to help you understand. Which I already do.
But put some effort yourselves. And for heaven's sake, don't be so gullible. Don't be so fucking EASY.
YOU, SNS, have EVERYTHING THAT MATTERS. Fuck NH, SS. NrSk, SK. They have nothing. And you have one of the best written love stories in the entire world.
And you are still so damn insecure, it's seriously ridiculous. Kishi put so much damn work in this love story, you apparently are in the fandom because of it, but you still doubt it. At the end of the day, it pretty much negates what Kishi himself wrote with so much damn effort. All because of- SS SaiD tHiS, Ss saID thAt. 😭
This is a love story about Sasuke and Naruto.
I have said it a million times already. Trust your instincts. That's how stories work. That's how they are written. Follow the story for the story's sake. Not for shipping. You are not in competition with ANYONE. No one can compete with SNS, how can they? The whole story is a love story about THEM! Unless that's all you care about. Competing. In which case, go to someone else. I am here to talk story and characters. I don't give any credit to NH and SS and you are only enabling them when you obsess over every little stupid thing they say. Stop it.

I believe that Data (”Star Trek: The Next Generation”), Ron Weasley (”Harry Potter” - books) and Mando (”The Mandalorian”) are ISFJs.
Introverted Sensing
Data, as an android, has great memory and he bases his decisions on his past experiences. He applies the Starfleet protocol to the letter.
Ron has been brought up in a traditional family and he holds quite conservative views. Sometimes it makes him nasty (for example, when he says “scarlet woman” or when he’s scolding Ginny about her boyfriends), but it also makes him value family and friendship so he’s a loyal brother and friend.
Din ‘This is the Way’ Djarin is a devout follower of the Mandalorian cult. He doesn’t have any doubts about it.
Types like ISTP or INTP prefer knowing the reason for doing what is expected of them. They don’t easly follow the crowd, tradition or religion. They might but they usually need to think it through. On the other hand, SJ types tend to stick to traditional values and the way they were taught unless proven otherwise. Why fix what’s not broken?
But they are not blind machines. They may break the rules they usually follow when they feel it’s justified. Often the reason concerns other people.
Extraverted Feeling
Data, who follows the Starfleet protocol even when it’s inconvenient, breaks the Prime Directive and his beloved Captain’s orders, because a little girl was scared. He risks punishment to help his friend who’s desperately looking for his mother. He tries to understand and adress other people’s feelings.
Ron cares deeply about his friends. He sacrifices himself during the chess trial in the first year. He’s ready to risk his life to save Ginny in the Chamber of Secrets. He notices something weird is going on with Hermione in their third year. He helps to prepare Buckbeak’s appeal. He lets Harry practice spells on him to help him to prepare to the Triwizard Tournament. He notices scars on Harry’s hand after Umbridge’s detention. He learns more about courting to better express his admiration for Hermione. He jumps into cold water to save Harry during the war and his sacrifice lets him get the sword of Gryffindor. He remembers the House Elves during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Mando immediately starts caring about Grogu. He breaks one of the most important rule of his cult and takes his helmet off to please Grogu. He’s less angry with the sheriff who uses Mandalorian armour when he gets to know him better.
Introverted Thinking
Data, Ron and Mando are logical and pragmatic. When they encounter a problem, they think it through and when they do, they need good arguments to change their minds. They are quite stubborn.
At the same time, they don’t understand their own feelings very well. Data believes he doesn’t have any feelings. Ron doesn’t understand his feelings very well which leads to his frequent discontent and anger. Mando hides behind the emotionless mask.
Extraverted Intuition
They can be creative, flexible, funny and open to new ideas.
They aren’t stereotypical
A stereotypical ISFJ is a quiet girl who bakes cakes for her friends. It might be true for some women, but for a lot of ISFJs, especially men, this is simply not true.
Data lives in a futuristic society so he doesn’t adhere to traditional values. He doesn’t show his Fe in a typical way because of his autistic traits and because he’s a member of a military organisation. Sometimes he question his Ti because of his low self-esteem.
Ron is a teenager in a patriarchal society. He’s pressured to hide his Fe and he doesn’t rely on his Ti as much as he could because of his low self-esteem. He my be perceived as other types, because his characterisation in the films sometimes clashes with the books, changes his behavior and makes his traits less obvious. For example, he behaves more like a perceiving type rather than a judging type, he doesn’t notice Harry’s scars (Hermione does) and so on. (BTW, in the books Hermione is clearly an ISTJ while in the films she looks like an ISFJ.)
Mando is a member of a military cult and he lives in a dangerous world. He’s learnt to hide his Fe.

it's really not that funny at all, but for some reason Dan still being a practicing christian amuses me just the tiny little bit. i think it's entirely because i'm having to consolidate that being the same Dan from the "stories for straight men" comic, leading to the characterisation of "Dan is a Pious man, but lord above he has a Perishing Thirst" in my head and like good for you Daniel Fuller, way to embrace your faith yet remain sex positive
On a less jokey note: Dom having some religious inclination, even if slight, is both just cute and a little sad given his mostly-still-just-hinted-at-but-i-am-connecting-those-dang-dots backstory. I love the idea of him never pressuring- probably not even offering in the "you can come if you want" way that Dan does in the comic- Miranda or Cody to join him to church (not that i imagine he goes every week himself, but he tries to go as often as possible) but they have accompanied him a couple of tomes and he really appreciates the gesture. I also like the idea that for him personally, it's less about the inherent truth of the scripture of Christianity for him, and more a dictionary-definition spiritual thing for him where it's more just calming, grounding; gives him something to anchor himself to and to help make the world make a little more sense. A routine that's not really a routine but its close enough and unlike work it's neither necessary nor stressful and for Dom, I think he'd need something like that; I'm for once not joking about when I say that setting aside time to listen to music and engross myself in it and get all into the spiritual BS of how it feeds the 'soul' or 'spirit' is a very similar and very necessary grounding thing for me in reality (and by extension SJ obvs) and as we know, I Do Enjoy A Bit of Projecting on Dom (even if done in the abstract in this sense).

Anatomy of a Scandal
In a lesson unrelated to coursework, we did writing practice for our up and coming media studies mock. We were tasked with writing a comprehensive analysis of the techniques used to film the opening of Anatomy of a Scandal (dir. SJ Clarkson, 2022).
Rewrite post feedback:
“Anatomy of a Scandal” is a thriller-drama show that follows the endeavours of a female barrister. From the first scene post title, “Anatomy of a Scandal” presents itself as an unconventional, representing the often overlooked women in the field of law and politics. Framed from the main character, Kate Woodcrofts perspective, the director makes use of specific filmmaking techniques to demonstrate the virtues of Woodcrofts character.
The opening scene (pre title) focuses on a couple in an intimate moment. A non diegetic, haunting soundtrack plays throughout the sequence, intermixed with pleonastic, diegetic sounds of pleasure such as heavy breathing and moaning. The lighting desaturated chiaroscuro, which often times suggests duality or moral ambiguity. The lighting also obscures certain elements such as the faces of the couple, which may be indicative of the relationship being done in secrecy. The director follows a theme of obscuring visual elements, through the use of lowering the amount of frames per second to generate motion blur to further obscure the actions of the character. All this paired with fast paced editing of tight, close shots and multiple angles, leaves the audience unaware if the onscreen actions are that os passion or violence.
Post title, the perspective is now subjective as we follow Woodcroft leaving court in medias res. We see her wearing a wig, which solidifies her profession as a barrister. This representation demonstrates Woodcroft as unconventional, as very few women are barristers. Throughout this section, multiple techniques are used to show off the setting, being that of an impressive, expansive court. Its grandness is reinforce through repeated use of medium to wide shots of high and low angles, as these shots display the environments sheer size. However, this is used in tangent to the director drawing most of the attention to Woodcroft. The black barrister uniform costume contrasts greatly to the the light, blued tinted court, making her stand out more. In addition to this, from Woodcrofts first appearance, the camera becomes dynamic, tracking an panning on her actions, almost as if she is leading it, characterising her as a leader.
A growing, non-diegetic soundtrack titled “How the Mighty Fall”, indicates a downfall for her character, losing her established position of power. The sound of Woodcrofts offscreen, diegetic footsteps are pleonastic, making her presence known, this demonstrates control and power, which is modern, progressive representation of women. In addition to this, control is also displayed through fast paced, rhythmic editing, as if her actions dictate the flow of music. The shallow focus on Woodcroft in the foreground also emphasises her importance, unconventional as women are conventionally relegated to the role of disposable stock characters. Importance is emphasised when shots of her grow tighter, causing her to take up more of the frame. this is best shown in the dutch angle of her saying “Fuck yes”. The dutch angle suggests disorientation, likely due to a long day of work. This, alongside her exhausted paralingustics, Woodcroft is represented as a hard worker.
Woodcrofts hard working nature is further proven when she steps outside into the low key lit night. this, in contrast to the well lit court, implies she has been working for hours. the soundtrack now fully embraces her control, pausing and waiting for her to open her umbrella. Unlike the courtroom sequence, the shot duration is now much longer. this presents Woodcroft at her most calm and collected; not in a rush. this is unconventional as women are often told not to spend prolonged periods of time outside at night, as it is unsafe. Woodcrofts refusal to do that indicates a level of independence and control. She also dawns a full black costume, presenting her as mature and refined.
When Woodcroft reaches her chambers, she is presented as a leader, now with the aid of other characters, that being her butler, to interact with to see her dynamic with others. The chamber sequence is a long take, with few cuts. Extra attention was paid into making the audience constantly aware of Woodcrofts dominating presence. She is often kept in frame, even if not in focus, or in the background. In the few moments she is not in frame, her voice is heard offscreen, giving her a dominant, almost godlike presence. despite this, the actress gives performance codes of a relaxed and down to earth boss.

being and time by Esmenet @chadlesbianjasontodd
He had thought it would stop feeling like this. He had thought that that final, painful conversation with Yue Qingyuan would have been enough to stop feeling anew, every time Yue Qi looked at him, like he was walking around wearing another man's ghost.
Platonic qijiu/yueyuan with feels. Very well-written with excellent characterisation and some cucumberplane friendship. Oneshot.

voluntary victim (tie the noose) by technorat
Looking back at everything, Shen Qingqiu comes to a conclusion: everything that went wrong in his first life happened because of him.
Or, the Peak Lords search for Shen Qingqiu. Too bad he doesn't want to be found.
Liujiu/liushen/bingqiu/bingliushen time travel fix-it with character development and redemption. Angst, aftermath of torture, trauma, and hurt/comfort. Shen Qingqiu and the other peak lords slowly become friends. 9/? chapters as of 1/1/21.
Write What You Know by bingheluvr69
Shang Qinghua had a lot of regrets. In his original life as a cultivator, he never got to be a writer, he never really made friends amidst his constant paranoia and mistrust, and he never really learned more about his boss before Mobei Jun killed him (presumably, for his uselessness).
In his new life, he's broke, he has no cultivation, and he lives in a Modern world with a shitty System. But at least he has the spare time to start a writing career?
Part of the SV Stand-alone Plotbunny Oneshots. OG SQH is Airplane fic. Some cucumberplane friendship and very slight pre- Moshang. Fix-it fic with reverse transmigration, humour, and some amnesia. (and personally, it has a lot of things that I didn't realise I needed in an svsss fic until I read it). Oneshot.
(Note: only some parts of the summary have been added to reduce space)
Feel free to add more ✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧

decided to take a trip down memory lane and revist tog, and honestly i breezed through the first few chapters. it's honestly glaring & kind of sad how much better s/jm's prose is in her first book compared to most recent (less em dashes/repetition/bad metaphors, even some subtle characterisation & editing, god forbid). esp considering authors are probably supposed to become better writers as they publish more books, not worse. what a lack of motivation to create good art does to you, i suppose?
i think it also has to do, on a large scale, with the fact that sj///m had worked on t0g for years with multiple people, from critique partners to her agent to, finally, her team of editors at blooms. in her later books, the books likely go right from sj///m to editor, and she's admitted that she has the power to blanket reject editorial notes (and had done so since h0f). since they outsourced for Noa Wheeler, though, she seems to be trying to spruce up her prose, however bad the result is. at least she's back to one book a year, though i fear (and have already witnessed) that bouncing bw CCity and ac0tar is going to make the books mirrors of each other, and not in a good way. in many ways, they already are copycats (such as the Asteri/those higher beings mentioned in ac0sf i'm drawing a blank on)

More non-Ichigo character thoughts. This time, Rukia.
Sleving the ones who are actually permanently children for whatever reason completely unexplained at least before the novels, haven’t been following the novels. Like the Digimon Adventure universe movies, the only other cartoon I like on its own merit and not because it’s tied to my cartoon-loving dad who died of racially motivated fetishistic abuse against Asians, the same which most fandom exhibits, the Bleach novels seem like they’re mostly there to justify the poor rush job that the epilogue was. Again, same as the Adventure epilogue. Just, the literal twelve-year old fans decided to hop on the family computer and type up some fix-it fic to post on their Geocities rather than the terrible-twos-esque temper tantrums we saw from some Bleach fans.
Anyway, so, you know, there was definitely a deep love between Renji and Rukia that appeared when Renji was fighting Ichigo, though not in the early stuff, because seat-of-pants writing. Been there, and I think anyone who’s written fic has.
However, not only do none of their interactions ever read as romantic, they don’t read as the same maturity level except for the early jail taunting bit.
Renji reads like a lot of his peers, except that his childhood as a street urchin haunts him especially hard.
Remember episode one? The first thing Rukia gets mad about ends with her claiming she’s ten times Ichigo’s age. When she binds him, she takes time to draw on his face before going to do her duty.
I just mentioned the whole problem of characters’ trajectories veering wildly onto a completely different road. Shoot, look at early Gin and end Gin. (Leaving aside early Orihime who wants to be a cyborg and wants to fight to protect Tatuki like Tatuki always protected her, and her veering into Nurse Nancy In Distress Orihime, which compounds sexism because yes, the work is sexist and all sorts of queerphobic. I really would’ve loved to see a follow-up on when she decides to destroy the Hogyoku, honestly)
However, Rukia… never really moves past or gets veered off the course of her early characterisation. Even her very sweet scene with Orihime in the early Arrancar arc—it frankly read *way* more like possibly shippy peer content between them.
There are totally adults that size—I’ve known white, black, and non-white European cis men under four foot nine and Rukia’s height and build is not at all uncommon for E/SE Asian women. Her and Momo both look like just short women, not the same as, say, Hiyori or Tousirou, who are clearly just perma-kids. The average Japanese woman is five foot two/157 or 158 cm, but that height and build is not uncommon. (And though mine was racially motivated because I’m Asian enough, furthermore, Japanese enough, Momo seriously needs more love—takes a DV survivor to know a DV survivor. Clearly Aizen has groomed probably even her sense of self out of her, and neither canon nor fandom is particularly kind to her. There is not much explicit about what went on between them, but I honestly see no other possible reading for her)
Just…Rukia doesn’t ever end up reading like someone who would make a good parent. Yes, the parents of all Bleach teens are absolutely dysfunctional—the adults in positions of authority over them in Karakura all are somehow. However, what little we see in the new SJ Bleach chapter, which I actually bought at my local Japanese language bookstore, so I’m going off the original in my native language, thankfully, they’re not just repeating the dysfunction. (Though I’m very curious why there does seem to be formal kinship terms despite the fact that Kubo unimaginatively rolled with current Japanese law—thank the LDP, America’s favourite—and Rukia married out instead of Renji marrying in, as evidenced by their name plaque at their door. Clearly, there is some Kuchiki influence in their family, though… scratching my head)
It’s another undeveloped, inexplicable thing, just, I mean, while the read I got was Orihime seeing Ichigo as her hero when abuse is on all sides, totally reasonable, and Ichigo seeing Nurse Nancy in Distress Orihime as a *responsibility,* and that is just never the underpinnings of a healthy relationship. I don’t even care if you’re talking a D/s relationship, you don’t start off on that foot and expect to last, at least there was *some something* going on?
Renji and Rukia just don’t read romantic, and furthermore, Rukia just doesn’t read mature enough to be a mother at all. Rukia looks like she could be in her twenties, but she acts like a teenager throughout. Any time she’s not in line of duty mode, she just acts like Ichigo’s age. So that development was absolutely a curveball.
(And “people can be born as ghosts” is just a whole another issue and posts. Artificial bodies being capable of reproduction resulting in living children? OK. Ghosts having ghost babies…? Stretching a little too far for my taste)

When kishi joined the project they said they were going to be following his outline. And kishi spoke about not minding the characters from naruto dying. I hope that means he wrote that they die in his outline... Boruto is complete trash, but they did lose the rinnegan and kurama at the same time. I feel like that was kishi's influence even though whoever wrote it + ikemoto executed it poorly
Yeah I think so too. Since Kishimoto is the creator and supervisor, that implies that the story goes through his lens before getting published. Ikemoto's art is abysmal and doesn't really drive the emotions as well as Kishi's did. I also am not sure who is writing it, there's no credit mentioned for it. But it does seem only logical that Kishi is behind the scenes, seeing how Sasuke and Naruto's parts are progressing. Even if it is executed badly like you said.
But well, Kishi has talked about them dying or something drastic happening in this vein. Usually killing off a major character in the sequel serves as a major milestone in the character development of the protagonist of the series. But he also knows that Boruto and the new gen characters simply don't have the dramatic and narrative heft that his original creations' characters had. It doesn't matter what Boruto fans say, objectively, Boruto is a subpar manga, as compared to the original. It can't even do justice to the major themes that the original established, if you are gonna base your story in the same universe with the same characters, you can't just cheat the audience by adding new elements without actually justifying them in a rational manner. Naruto and Shippuden might have had a few plotholes but largely, its world building made sense, you can tell Kishi was being sincere and not taking his audience as fools. He really tried hard. And he succeeded. Boruto is just so...derivative and badly done at that.
But it does seem Sasuke and Naruto's relationship is getting some traction, although it's hard to tell where it's gonna go. Killing off Sasuke and Naruto's characters would be cutting down Boruto's audience by a large percentage. I don't know if producers themselves would approve of it. But I can see why Kishi would wanna do it. He never really wanted Boruto. He obviously nerfed them because he knew that the way Sasuke and Naruto were actually characterised in the original would never really gel with Boruto's world unless he made heavy alterations to their characters. So he did. He owns majority of rights to Boruto manga, nothing can happen without his say so. And I can say with some confidence that he isn't really too happy with the whole concept of Boruto. It's so clearly half hearted. I also have a sense that something is going on with the publication as to writing and production of the manga. Some complication. Perhaps some altercation between Kishi and SJ and editors regarding the creative part. But it's only a hunch.
Only time will tell.

reading sjmess books always give me this weird sense of emptiness because like. even as a woc who’s white passing i get the natural thought of allthese white people being extra beautiful and mess’s descriptions of the few poc are so insulting, almost as much as their characterisation and execution, that you get mad as fuck. i’m honestly so tired of that woman
me too, anon, me too. i’m so tired of every. single. white. person. being described as beautiful or stunning or striking or gorgeous or what-have-you. and when a POC is described as pretty in some way, it downright reeks with problems. just look at this passage in CCity (drug mention tw):
She found Juniper dancing amid a pack of sylph females celebrating a friend’s successful Drop. Their silvery heads were adorned with circlets of neon glow sticks chock-full of their friend’s designated allotment of her own firstlight, which she’d generated when she successfully completed the Drop. Juniper had managed to swipe a glow-stick halo for herself, and her hair shone with blue light as she extended her hands to Bryce, their fingers linking as they danced.
Bryce’s blood pulsed in time to the music, as if she had been crafted just for this: the moment when she became the notes and rhythm and the bass, when she became song given form. Juniper’s glittering eyes told Bryce that she understood, had always understood the particular freedom and joy and unleashing that came from dancing. Like their bodies were so full of sound they could barely contain it, could barely stand it, and only dance could express it, ease it, honor it.
Males and females gathered to watch, their lust coating Bryce’s skin like sweat. Juniper’s every movement matched hers without so much as a lick of hesitation, as if they were question and answer, sun and moon.
Quiet, pretty Juniper Andromeda—the exhibitionist. Even dancing in the sacred, ancient heart of the Raven, she was sweet and mild, but she shone.
Juniper is one of the few canonical POC in CCity, since sj///m leaves most of the other characters up to interpretation, such as with Hunt Athalar being Asian-coded, but it’s so thinly written that a lot of people read him as white (as evidenced by the fanart), or Fury Axtar, whose ethnicity i’m still not sure of but many agree she’s Asian-coded (and this is also reflected in fanart of her). the amount of praise sj///m gets for doing the absolute bare minimum in terms of rep is fucked. we can’t praise her for including characters of color when the inclusion of those characters is problematic to the nth degree.
also, just so stans are aware, if they happen to peruse my blog or our tags: BRUCE IS NOT A WOMAN OF COLOR. JUST BECAUSE HER STEPDAD IS A MAN OF COLOR DOES NOT MEAN SHE SUDDENLY BECOMES A WOMAN OF COLOR WHEN BOTH OF HER BIRTH PARENTS ARE WHITE.
ahem, anyway, it’s infuriating and sj///m has not improved in the slightest. with CCity, i’d even go so far as to say she’s regressed in her inclusion of diverse people, from characters of color to queer characters to disabled characters. she’s included them, yes, but the world they inhabit is not inclusive and supportive and diverse and, therefore, their inclusion has opened up more problems than if sj///m had simply left all of them cishet, abled, and white.
