Scientists Make Alzheimer’s Breakthrough

A Simple Blood Test Could Detect Biological Markers of the Disease 15 Years Before Symptoms Develop, Researchers Say

Scientists have hailed a potentially ‘Revolutionary’ breakthrough in the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, after a team of Swedish researchers found that a commercially available blood test can detect biological markers of the disease about ten to 15 years before symptoms develop.

In a study of 768 people in their fifties, sixties, and seventies over an eight-year period conducted by the University of Gothenburg, it was found that the test – which detects the presence of tau proteins in blood – was 97% accurate in assessing if a subject was liable to develop the disease.

The results of the study, published in the JAMA Neurology Journal on Monday, have been hailed as a breakthrough in early screening tests for the disease well in advance of the onset of symptoms.

Alzheimer’s, which causes the brain to shrink and its cells to eventually die, is the most common form of dementia, and is characterized by a decline in cognitive function, as well as behavior and social skills.

The research “adds to a growing body of evidence that this particular test has huge potential to revolutionize diagnosis for people with suspected Alzheimer’s,” Sheona Scales, the director of research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said, according to The Times on Monday.

She added that the testing is “superior to a range of other tests currently under development,” and preferable to more invasive methods currently used by medical practitioners, such as lumbar punctures.

David Curtis of the UCL Genetics Institute said that the findings of the Swedish team of scientists “could potentially have huge implications.”

“Everybody over 50 could be routinely screened every few years, in much the same way as they are now screened for high cholesterol,” he added. “It is possible that currently available treatments for Alzheimer’s disease would work better in those diagnosed early this way.”

The developer of the blood test, Californian company ALZpath, has said that it hopes to make the test widely available for clinical use in the first quarter of this year.

About 1 in 9 people (10.7%) aged 65 or over has the disease, according to data from the Alzheimer’s Association. This is expected to rise substantially in the next 25 years, the group says on its website, “barring the development of medical breakthroughs to prevent or cure Alzheimer’s disease.”

Thousands of people across the UK who are worried about their memory will receive blood tests for dementia in two trials that doctors hope will help to revolutionise the low diagnosis rate.

Teams from the University of Oxford and University College London will lead the trials to research the use of cheap and simple tests to detect proteins for people with early stages of dementia or problems with cognition, with the hope of speeding up diagnosis and reaching more people.

Currently, getting a formal diagnosis in the UK relies on mental ability tests, brain scans or invasive and painful lumbar punctures, where a sample of cerebrospinal fluid is drawn from the lower back.

About 1 million people are living with the condition in Britain, and this is expected to rise to about 1.7 million by 2040 – with potentially grim consequences. In 2022, dementia took the lives of 66,000 people in England and Wales, and it is now the leading cause of death in Britain, with Alzheimer’s accounting for two-thirds of cases.

Patients and their families have been reported to wait for up to four years to get an appointment and the results, according to charities. More than one in three people living with dementia in England are yet to receive a formal diagnosis.

The tests are highly effective in research settings, so if they prove as useful in real life, they could make the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s more accessible.

They could provide results to patients much sooner and accelerate the introduction of new Alzheimer’s drugs that rely on early diagnosis. The trial will help determine if they can be rolled out routinely on the NHS.

Fiona Carragher, the director of research and influencing at the Alzheimer’s Society, said the reliance on specialised tests had led to “unnecessary delays, worry and uncertainty” that meant people often could not access the care they needed early on.

“Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer, yet a third of people living with dementia don’t have a diagnosis, which means they’re not able to access care and support. At the moment, only 2% of people with dementia can access the specialised tests needed to demonstrate eligibility for new treatments, leading to unnecessary delays, worry and uncertainty,” she said.

The research teams are sponsored by Alzheimer’s Research UK and the Alzheimer’s Society, with £5m of funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery.

Dr Sheona Scales, the director of research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “We’ve seen the enormous potential that blood tests are showing for improving the diagnostic process for people and their loved ones in other disease areas. Now we need to see this same step change in dementia, which is the greatest health challenge facing the UK.

“It’s fantastic that through collaborating with the leading experts in the dementia community, we can look to bring cutting-edge blood tests for diagnosing dementia within the NHS. And this will be key to widening access to groundbreaking new treatments that are on the horizon.”

More than 50 memory clinics across the UK will be offering blood tests to about 5,000 volunteers as part of the five-year trial.

Jonathan Schott, the chief medical officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, will lead a trial on the most promising blood biomarker in tests on 1,100 people across the UK.

The second trial will test for multiple forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies on about 4,000 people.

This is how they find out about Princess Sheona who they find stuck in an underwater maze, but how will they be able to get her out and can Angus and Haining be convinced to help? This is a fantasy adventure which grips you from start to finish and teaches us all about bravery and being kind.

sheona 'scourge' king, age seventeen, is kidnapped by the life foundation during an attempt to kidnap an unhoused woman camped nearby. unhoused themselves and highly protective, sheona, addressed as 𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗚𝗘 and/or cur by fellow members of the scene and community, fought off the government agents attempting to kidnap the woman— resulting in them being taken in her place. in the now-conjoined oscorp &. life foundation laboratory, they are given as a host to the 𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗕𝗜𝗢𝗧𝗘 after four of the symbiotes have been retrieved from whip-web. however, rather than deteriorate under the symbiote's parasitic nature, the two formed a destructive bond; breaking loose ( with some help ) – and refusing to ever be separated. now, at nineteen, they reek havok under the watchful eye of earth-721's whip-web; and perhaps, even in places he cannot reach.

𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗧𝗜𝗗-𝗕𝗜𝗧𝗦:

sheona doesn't go by their birth name unless you are a family member ( not of blood but of bond ) or a romantic partner which is... few. very few. they are AFAB and go by they/them pronouns. transmasc, bisexual, you will call them scourge or cur; there is no in-between. pure, pure scottish. positively impossible not to notice the second you speak to them.

heavily involved in the metal scene. they organize for venues and know lots of bands personally due to years of keeping up-and-around for any punk that needs help. if you need an abandoned place to play music, or hell, to stay— scourge's got yer' back. they are a big crowd-killer though so... maybe don't stand too close.

they've been unhoused for a long time since their mother disowned them at the age of thirteen for things out of their control. when they bond with lasher, they find a security they haven't had in a very long time- so they spend their time in earth-721 doing what kabiguru can't do; which is kill those who won't take no for an answer. they have no moral qualms against killing for another's sake— and if it's for lasher's sake, eating is apart of the menu.

scourge ends up stealing one of the dimensional travel watches' off one of the spidermen that were assigned to a mission on earth-721. when lasher's put in danger due to forces on their earth, scourge flees to earth-616 to prevent the symbiote from being taken away. for now, that is where they reside until the threat subsides.

𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗟𝗘 𝗙𝗨𝗡 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗦:

- they've done all their piercings themselves along with designing of their own clothes. they despise the feeling of most earth-721 fabrics.so, their solution is making their own. for their anniversary of meeting, scourge knitted lasher their own sweater-- it did indeed fit. - hate, hate, hate being touched. if you touch them, lasher will instinctually come out to protect his host. if they initiate contact, you either gotta start counting your days or thanking them. - familial bond with kabiguru that results after realizing that his influence is the reason why they escaped from the life foundation that fateful day. scourge calls him 'dad'. doesn't really see him as dad but it's clear whatever they have going on is affectionate on some level.

I'm back! Let's see how long this lasts.

It was my ignorance that saved me. Later that's what I'll find out, when the dust settles around me, or at least the chains. It was my ignorance of my brother's shady dealings, of my father's wheeling and dealing, and my mother's scheming and even my sister's con artist ways. What did that say about me that I never saw any of it? I grew up thinking my life was pretty normal. A little strange, but aren't all families just a little strange? Granted we moved around alot, but at least I always had a roof over my head, food in my belly, and well.. I sucked at making friends. So wasn't like I ever really had anyone to miss when we moved. It would only be later, as I sit here in this cell, shackles on my wrists and ankles, leaning on the bar and tempted to rattle a metal cup on the bars like those old timey movies mom loved so much. That is, if I had a metal cup. Somehow I seemed to be lacking.. well.. everything. Was it possible to be bored in jail? Because quite frankly, I was absolutely bored. No one had come by to speak (interrogate) me in what felt like days but was most likely only hours. I was stuck in these terrible prison garments which weren't even black and white striped, which only added insult to injury, or even a cool color like bright orange. No, they were a boring grey and oddly comfortable with the elastic stretchy waistband pants and the shirt long enough to cover my pooch that most shirts rode up. Don't judge me! I like carbs. Anyway, what was I saying? Right, it was my ignorance that saved me from the fate of my family. I pressed my forehead against the bars, ignoring the stinging sensation of the silver coated against my bare skin. As a quarter blood, it was only annoying instead of capable of burning my flesh or even for some species, melting it, the silver that is. Granted, most species were allergic in some way to silver, it was only the really cool species like Dracona or the holy Sheona who suffered with gold and iron? That was mostly for faeries and their ilk. I'd never met a Faerie before but I was pretty sure they'd be really interesting and fun to talk to. God I was bored. Did I mention I was bored? Because I am. So bored. And lonely. Though to be fair, that wasn't anything new. Wasn't like anyone wanted to befriend me, either because of the humans sensed there was something different about or the Supers.. Supernaturals that is, looked down on me for being a quarter blood. I wasn't even sure I was registered in the K'na'gran Empire or not. Only half bloods and higher were required after all. Sighing, I pulled on my ponytail, pulling the scrunchie free and letting my tangled waves tumble around my face. It wasn't even anything pretty like curls or beachy waves, but just generic brown hair to match my generic brown eyes, to my generic plain pudgy body. Sighing, I shoved the strands back into a messy ponytail. The waves were too wild and grew all different directions to ever be able to properly braid, too coarse and thick. Closing my eyes, I breathed in and out, trying to control my rising panic about the idea of dying alone and un-mourned and I still had no idea where my family had been taken. When the scrunchie immediately slide free and tumbled to the floor, I just sighed and poked it with one socked toe, debating whether I wanted to take the effort to bend down and pick it up. My hair falling into my face, tangling with my glasses, made the decision for me. I shoved my glasses, old enough that the prescription mostly hindered instead of helped me actually see but I liked the comfort of wearing something I'd worn since I was six years old, up the bridge of my nose and huffed as I bent down, going to one knee as it was easier on my old bones. Somehow, the Mother was watching over me in that moment.
