well, I can't say I expected the new chapter to feature Idia (metaphorically) going to (metaphorical) hell, getting a pep talk from his (metaphorical) Phantom brother which helps him finally move on once and for all from his brother's death, and (metaphorically) overblotting again to fight his way back out of (metaphorical) hell, only to have his darkest fear (non-metaphorically) come true when his mom goes through his computer and finds all his secret files. but I am glad it did!
also this is all a flashback for the purpose of explaining to our group what the heck is going on (whether or not any of it is getting through is another matter)

Me: hm, I want something to put on the TV as background noise... Huh. Looks like YouTube is recommending something called The Last Unicorn. That's perfect, it's probably some old shitty animation that has aged poorly! I can watch it ironically!
Me, 2 hours later as the credits roll: *crying, cheering, buying the book, composing the songs*
Me, 2 weeks later: So I have compiled all of the quotes from the book that I think could make good tattoos, and also, HOW HAVE I NEVER LEARNED ABOUT HOW THE LAST UNICORN FUCKING SLAPS??? This gay-ass little fairytale fed my soul! Watered my crops! Transed my gender! Can't believe I heard of this story from youtube recommendations, of all places!!

love that in a time of people trying to write teenage girl characters as relatable by making them mention tiktok or whatever harrowhark is by far the most realistic and actually relatable because shes a complete wreck. in gideon the ninth she's lying to everybody in her community and secretly carrying everything on her own back. she's a bitch to everybody because she's at her maximum of stress at all times. in her own book where she's the title character she's depressed as shit hanging onto a malicious sword with her fingernails even though it makes her throw up. she's emotionally distressed in at least 8 ways at all times and has no idea why but so dissociative she barely feels it and god is trying to kill her. honestly what is being a girl in your late teens except god trying to kill you

neuvillette's lore is actually insane. we all took one look at him and went "haha dragon🫵" but i significantly underestimated how big of a role he would play. he's the incarnation of the original hydro sovereign. he took back his rule right under the heavenly principles' nose. he's the one handing out hydro visions now (not even because he has to, he doesn't, he just grew so fond of humanity that he chooses to). he gave away the hydro gnosis bc he straight up doesn't need it. he's planning to DETHRONE ALL OF THE ARCHONS (in a few hundred years, when the traveler's not around to see it, so it won't be awkward for them). he's kind and soft-spoken. he's full of vengeful rage. he's a father to hundreds. he found his purpose after feeling lost for 500 years. skirk pulled him aside for a super-secret convo and when he saw us again he immediately spilled the tea. as far as i can tell, he spawned into existence fully formed. no other character can fucking compare

Rereading Batgirl (2000) and it really is crazy how DC struck gold with such a strong ongoing centering a complex and nuanced protagonist, with strong ties to other characters in the mythos, and an interesting take on morality filtered through her trauma and guilt, and her deep desire to do good. And then just threw all that out for seemingly no reason other than racism and misogyny and let Cassandra’s character be neglected for years.
