Hi Friends. Quick update on my life. I'm very excited about having new music to share, but I just wanted to let you know that one of the reasons why I haven't been able to participate in the press and promotion leading up to the release of Javelin is bc I am in the hospital. Last month I woke up one morning and couldn't walk. My hands, arms and legs were numb and tingling and I had no strength, no feeling, no mobility. My brother drove me to the ER and after a series of tests—MRIs, EMGs, cat scans, X-rays, spinal taps (!), echo-cardiograms, etc.—the neurologists diagnosed me with an auto immune disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Luckily there's treatment for this — they administer immuno-hemoglobin infusions for five days and pray that the disease doesn't spread to the lungs, heart and brain. Very scary, but it worked. I spent about two weeks in Med/Surg, stuck in a bed, while my doctors did all the things to keep me alive and stabilize my condition. I owe them my life.
On September 8, I was transferred to acute rehab, where I am now undergoing intensive physical therapy/occupational therapy, strength building etc. to get my body back in shape and to learn to walk again. It's a slow process, but they say I will "recover," it just takes a lot of time, patience, and hard work. Most people who have GBS learn to walk again on their own within a year, so I am hopeful. I'm only in my second week of rehab but it is going really well and I am working really hard to get back on my feet. I'm committed to getting better, I'm in good spirits, and I'm surrounded by a really great team. I want to be well!
I'll keep you posted as I progress. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. And a huge shout out to all the incredible caretakers of the world working night and day to help us heal. They are living saints.
Be well, be joyful, stay sane, stay safe. I love you.
yours truly from a wheelchair XOXOXO Sufjan Stevens

pre-season testing, 2023
sebastian is almost knocked back at the sudden presence of another in what he assumed was going to be an empty garage.
test session wasn’t for another couple of hours. but there, at the far end of the garage’s exit towards the pit, sat the driver. she sits on the floor, slouched over as her legs are crossed over one another.
“you’re early!”
“i couldn’t sleep,” she answers almost immediately. she turns her head to get a glance at sebastian. she gives him a small smile before turning away again to face the empty pit and grandstands. “i figured i should just sit here and take it all in.”
he smiles, closing the door behind him. he manoeuvres in and stops right next to her. he puts his hands on his hips. “i know, right? i didn’t sleep well days leading up to my rookie year either.”
she turns her head and furrows her eyebrows. “i didn’t think someone like you got nervous.”
“oh, i was terrified,” he laughs, finally bending down and dropping himself on the concrete floor next to her. “but i can only imagine the nerves, especially in your circumstance.”
“yeah, a woman in formula 1.” when he turns to look at her, she’s fiddling around with her thumbs. “first of its kind in decades.”
she laughs dryly before leaning back, resting her hands against the gravel. years ago, following her friends into formula 3 seemed like the biggest feat. then eventually, prema took a chance on her and threw her into formula 2 with the big guys.
even then, racing on the track and sharing the paddocks with bigger names like max verstappen and fernando alonso, formula 1 still seemed so far away. with good reason too, considering that her promotion announcement had been torn apart and overanalysed by the media.
everything, from mid december to early february, everyone had been tearing her apart.
but sebastian has been watching her since she started racing in f3 in place of oscar, after moving up to f2. she’s a joy to watch on the track.
and while he’s put away his years of being a villain to the public eye, he lives to prove everyone wrong. his first year as a race engineer, and then to have a woman as his driver? he would love to see it.
he is confident in the way she holds herself behind the wheel of a race car. there’s no doubt she’s a world champion in the making.
“no,” sebastian wags a finger in the air, “you’re a driver in formula 1. everyone in this garage — in the factory — supports you. we wouldn’t have put everything in developing the car for you if we didn’t think you’d be out here wrecking everybody.”
she sighs with a shrug. “i guess.”
he pats her firmly on the shoulder. “i’ll be here every step of the way, kid.”
bahrain, 2023
sebastian feels a presence looming over him as he scans the car with the andretti's engineers. he turns around with an eyebrow raised, locking eyes with the younger girl staring up at him with wide innocent eyes and a hopeful grin. a small smile stretches on his face as he straightens his back. “hi!”
“hi.” she glances away momentarily and licks her lips. she meets his eyes again with a soft sigh and a slightly wider grin. she hums as she sways, fingertips tapping against one another. “i have an interview.”
he nods hesitantly, raising an eyebrow. “alright.”
“okay.”
sebastian watches her curiously, not moving away from her position in front of him. she hugs she can on pepsi against her stomach as her eyes dart all over the garage. “is everything okay?”
“of course!” she answers almost too fast. she perks up with a smile and curious eyes. “i have a favour to ask.”
“anything, kid. what is it?”
she takes a deep breath and breathes out slowly. she looks away momentarily again and huffs. “well, you see… people keep staring at me when i’m walking around. it’s kinda… scary. they scare me.”
“okay? are they saying anything to you? who is it? give me names.”
“they’re not! but i can feel them whisper as i pass by — that’s never a good sign.”
“i’m sure they’re not gossiping about you, kid.”
“yeah, but, you know? i don’t like the possibility that they might be doing just that. and sometimes they point.”
sebastian smiles, slowly realising what she’s getting at. “do you want me to come with you?”
she hums, scrunching her nose and pressing her lips together. “do i? want you to come with me? what a bother!”
he shrugs, slowly walking away from her. “that’s okay, i was just offering. i’ll just see you–“
“yes! yes, seb! please, please,” she whines, grabbing his arm and pulling him towards the exit to the paddocks. “please come with me. i’m scared, i’m nervous, and oscar and logan are missing.”
he laughs, throwing his clipboard onto the table. “okay, let’s go. i’ll show you the best spots, kid.”
saudi arabia, 2023
she stares with wide eyes as she tries to process the question in her head. it’s the first of its kind, to be asked something like that. it echoes in her head like some of record player, unsure how she’s supposed to answer that question.
“do you think you’ll last longer than a couple of races like the last woman in formula 1?”
are they waiting for her to slip up and bring another woman down? a woman that’s basically urged her to even start racing in the first place?
is she supposed to say something that they could twist to make it sound like she’s against other women making it to where she is now? she’s just not sure. who even thinks of that question?
“is that question really appropriate?” sebastian steps forward with a hand on her back. “did you really sit there, watching this brilliant young woman walk towards you, and think that that’s an appropriate question to ask?”
“no, like i mean–“
“she will no longer be doing interviews with you. i don’t give a fuck who you work for,” sebastian mutters, slowly whisking the shocked girl away, shielding her away from the cameras.
she stays planted on the ground, head turning to follow sebastian slowly walking away. “no, it’s okay, really. i was just a little taken aback by the question.”
“no, this interview is over.”
sebastian shoots the reporter one last look before successfully whisking the young driver away from the cameras. “you don’t have to answer every question, you know?”
“it’s rude if i don’t,” she sighs, shaking her head. “i have to answer. what if they start thinking i’m a snob?”
“why is their problem if you’re a snob? if they ask you stupid questions, they can’t keep expecting sane answers,” sebastian scoffs. “write your narrative, don’t let them dictate and twist your answers.”
azerbajian, 2023
“seb,” she cries, nuzzling into his side as the marshals escort her. she has tears in her eyes as she approaches him by the medical building, finally pulling her hair back as sebastian takes her into his arms. “i’m sorry.”
“no,” he hums, rubbing her arm gently. “the important thing is that you’re okay, kid. don’t think about the crash at all.”
she shakes her head against his chest, finally letting out a soft sob. “but it’s so unlike me to crash. i’ve been racing for years!”
“these things happen.” he cranes his neck and pulls away slightly to glance at her face. she’s all red with tears streaming down her face, hiding her face away from curious race attendees. “you know what we should do?”
she mutters a soft ‘what’, rubbing her nose roughly as she glances up at him with sad eyes. he’s only gotten to know her better recently in light of him taking her under his wing, but it’s a very different energy when she’s like this. it’s not something he wants to get used to.
“i’ll walk you to the med bay, and then i’ll go and get you some ice cream. does that sound good?”
she shakes her head and sighs, letting sebastian wrap a protective arm around her as they walk. “i don’t want ice cream.”
sebastian gasps softly, flashing her a bewildered stare. “what? you don’t what?”
she sniffles. “i don’t feel like eating ice cream.”
“oh, come on,” he giggles, squeezing her cheek very lightly. “i’ll get you extra marshmallows and even add sprinkles in.”
she looks at him from the corners of her eyes, a small smile playing on her lips at his suggestion. “really? and extra chocolate syrup? just this once?”
sebastian nods with a smile. he moves over to her other side when he sees a camera approaching them, waving a hand in the air to shoo them away. “i’ll even let you eat a whole pint.”
australia, 2023
sebastian trails behind her, juggling between his phone and her helmet in her hands. he watches with a proud smile as she is stopped by a reporter.
“what does it feel like to be the first woman to score in formula 1 after years of the drought?”
she giggles giddily, stopping to answer a question. “hi! um, yes, it feels amazing to be the one to do it. it’s not a lot of points, but it really means a lot to me.”
“of course. do you think you can maintain this performance throughout your rookie season? what are some challenges you think you may face in the year to come?”
her eyes widen at the several questions for her. it feels just like they haven’t had any serious questions regarding the race for her since she started the year. sometimes they do, but it’s never really anything good that would reflect on her.
she looks over her shoulder, meeting sebastian’s eyes, as she smiles at him widely, as if to ask him ‘do you hear these legitimate questions they’re asking me?’. sebastian only gives her a warm smile in return with a thumbs-up.
she turns away and tries to come up with a proper answer to the question. “i think with sebastian’s help, it’s definitely made the transition a lot easier. hopefully i can stay consistent in the races to come. and my biggest challenge? definitely trying to catch up to max.”
they share a laugh. she turns around momentarily, looking at sebastian for approval of what she’s just rambled on about. sebastian gives her another smile and a nod, making a gesture to turn her back around.
“well, i think that’s everyone’s biggest challenge thus far into the season. thank you for your time today and good luck.”
miami, 2023
she holds the phone against her ear, temple laying against the window to stare at the paddocks. “where are you?”
“what do you mean?” sebastian’s voice comes through her phone, making her raise an eyebrow. “i don’t start as early as you today.”
“what? i’m supposed to walk into the paddocks by myself?” she shrieks, lifting her head. she looks around outside the car, watching the several people walking in and out.
“yes? aren’t you with oscar and logan?”
she tears her eyes away and turns to the other two men inside with her. “i don’t trust either of these idiots to not embarrass me walking in!”
logan throws his arms in the air, turning to her from the driver’s seat. his arm pokes between the two front seats, reaching to the back to try and hit her. she scowls and smacks his hand away, scowering away into the far corner from logan.
“you will be okay, kid. would you rather you walk in by yourself?”
she lets a moment pass. “okay. you got me there.” she sighs and rolls her eyes. “fine.”
monaco, 2023
“i’ve got an interview!”
he sees a shadow pass through the bottom of the car, prompting sebastian to jump up. the girl is already halfway towards the large exit that leads to the pitstop with a lollipop in hand. “coming!”
“it’s okay!” she holds her hands up in front of sebastian, grinning as he comes to a stop about three steps from the car.
sebastian tilts his head and frowns slightly. “what?”
“yeah, it’s a rookie interview. i got my bodyguards with me again today!”
he raises his eyebrows with an impressed grin. “oh! you’ll be okay without me?”
“yeah!”
as if on cue, two men — one in orange and on in blue — pulls up to the garage. “let’s go, loser!”
“okay,” sebastian laughs, greeting the two with a smile. he pats his driver on the back. “be back in one piece. i’ll see you later.”
“absolutely,” she grins. she runs around the car, throwing her arms around him and squeezing him. “you got my pepsi in the freezer?”
“i got 2 of them in the freezer just for you kid,” sebastian whispers, squeezing her back. he presses a kiss to the top of her head and waves as she starts walking away. “be safe!”
canada, 2023
“you don’t possibly need me just to get a cup of coffee downstairs, do you?” sebastian sighs. despite his complaint, he still follows the young driver down the stairs of the andretti racing home to get a drink.
and it’s been one their routines every race weekend: getting coffee together after their daily team meeting in his office. it’s endearing, really, how much she relies on him every weekend when she feels that the paddocks have their eyes glued to her too much.
“do you not like spending time with me anymore, seb?” she jokes, looking over her shoulder to tease him. “you can just say so.”
he laughs in bouts of sarcastic ‘haha’s and scowls at her slightly. “that’s not what i mean. half the season has come and gone — shouldn’t you be more comfortable roaming by yourself?”
“i guess,” she shrugs. “i just feel like being with you today!”
he pouts his bottom lip out and presses a hand against his chest. “oh, thank you. how thoughtful.”
sebastian stops in the kitchen of the office, grabbing the two custom andretti mugs with their names on the handle. his cup’s got her name and autograph, and hers with his. he extends his hand to her. “you know how i like my coffee, kid.”
“of course! i’m like your personal barista.”
austria, 2023
sebastian pushes the door open with a soft knock. “kid, are you better?”
“no! go away!” she shrieks, chucking a small pillow towards the door. “where are my meds? is logan seriously not back with them yet?”
he puts his hands in the air to surrender. “he’s trying to get here as quick as possible. are the cramps still bad?”
suddenly he feels like he wants to crawl into a random hole and stay there — the glare she is giving him simply made him wish that he never bothered to open his mouth.
“i don’t know. you tell me at the state you see me in,” she growls, eyebrows furrowed. “like–“
she whines again, clutching herself as she curls herself into a smaller ball on her beanbag. she closes her eyes and nuzzles her face into the stuffed koala with a soft cry.
“kid,” sebastian sighs, scratching his head. it sucks seeing anybody like that. “is there anything i can do to help? logan should be here any minute.”
“i want pepsi! freezing pepsi! like, with small bits of frozen pepsi in it — that’s how cold i want it.”
he hums. “i thought you shouldn’t be drinking cold drinks on your period?”
“you asked me how to help! i want pepsi! my frozen can of pepsi!”
he scrambles to run out of the room. “okay! i’ll get it from the fridge!”
silverstone, 2023
she shakes her arms and adjusts the neckline of her fireproofs. “i can do it.”
“yeah!” sebastian cheers, pumping his fist into the air. “i believe in you!”
“exactly. i can do it!”
but despite her words of encouragement for herself, her feet stay planted on the ground. her fists are balled by her side as her body stiffens up by the door with a scowl.
sebastian tilts his head, moving his head around hers to take a look at her face. he glances at the door. “do you have any intention to actually do it?”
“some time in the next hour, maybe,” she sighs. she turns around to sebastian and shakes her head. “i can’t do it, mate. i want to go home.”
“what?” sebastian throws his head back. he turns her back around and pushes her forward. “i promise you won’t die.”
“how do you know that?”
“you’re just walking the paddocks to the building to film a shoot with oscar and logan. you’ll survive the 2 minute walk, i swear.”
she huffs and pushes the glass doors open, glancing back at sebastian. “i’ll make a run for it so nobody has the time to realise it’s me.”
he shrugs with an impressed smile. if he were in her shoes, he never would have thought of that. “whatever works, kid.”
italy, 2023
“seb.” the girl drags her feet along the floors of the garage, hunched over slightly with a hand clutching her stomach. “how long til the first round of practice?”
“about 20 minutes,” sebastian says, looking up from his clipboard. by the sound of her voice, he already knows what’s going on. his suspicions are confirmed when he sees her at her state. “fuck’s sake.”
“i’m sorry. i promise i won’t take too long in the toilet.”
“we told you to stop eating ice cream before you have to get on the track,” sebastian sighs, throwing his head back. he puts the clipboard down, annoyed, yet he still reaches forward to wrap a protective arm around her shoulders and guides her towards the door leading to the paddocks. “your track anxiety doesn’t go well with ice cream, remember?”
“the idea was good in theory — it was pretty warm earlier.”
sebastian sighs and shakes his head. “you know where to find the meds for your stomach, right?”
she frowns, looking up at him. the pale lips and the sweaty forward simply told him everything he needed to know. he laughs with a small nod. “okay, i’ll deliver them to you with a glass of really cold water, okay?”
she nods with a small smile. “okay. thank you, seb.”
singapore, 2023
“what do i do with this?”
sebastian slowly turns to the girl with a scowl on his face. “what do you mean?”
“what do i do with this?” she repeats, putting her arms in the air in question. she turns to look sebastian in the eyes with eyebrows furrowed. “where do i put it? is it even mine?”
“they will make a replica for you to bring home.”
“but i live in an apartment with two hyperactive kids — they’ll only break it.”
“your ki– you mean kidnapper and stubby? just put it up away from them!”
“i,” she trails off, shaking her head. she lets her stare linger on the trophy sitting on the table in her driver’s room with worry. “i kinda don’t want it unless it’s a trophy for a race win.”
“complacent!” sebastian laughs. “are you that confident about being a race winner?”
“you don’t think i could win a race?”
“wait.”
“that’s kinda mean, seb. i don’t know.”
“you know that’s not what i mean.”
she shrugs and turns back to the trophy. “we just need to play bumper cars with max on the track, maybe.”
“maybe? definitely.”
she shrugs and puts her hands on her hips. “i reckon we just need more street circuits to throw max off. then maybe we get liam to be my teammate next year!”
qatar, 2023
sebastian looks up at the sound of the click of his door. he raises an eyebrow, frowning at the girl trying to silently escaping his office. “where are you going, kid?”
she stops with a hand on the door, head poking out as she smiles. “i’m going to get us coffee downstairs.”
he frowns and furrows his eyebrows. “without me?”
she squeaks slightly as she raises her eyebrows in shock. “i was gonna bring it back up here to you so we can chat while we discuss race strategies.”
“oh.”
“is something wrong? do you prefer drinking something else?”
sebastian shakes his head with a small smile. “no reason. you used to ask me to get coffee with you.” he puts a hand on his chest. “have you grown to hate me, kid?”
“aw, seb! it’s not like that!” she coos, running back into the room. she runs over to his side, resting herself on the armrest and throws her arms around sebastian. “i just thought i’d like to finally go get it myself, you know? you won’t be around forever.”
sebastian has to admit — that one kind of hurt him a little. he’d come out of retirement to step into an unlikely position in the sport so he could be part of her development as a driver. and also because he was starting to regret his decision slightly, but that’s besides the point.
and also the fact that he’s grown quite fond of her. while he’s got three children of his own back home, it’s just different with her.
“wow, kid. counting down the days to my eventual retirement that i won’t take back?”
“no, you misunderstand me, seb,” she giggles, resting her cheek on top of his head. “i just wanted to be a big girl; like you always tell me to be in the paddocks every weekend!”
brazil, 2023
“you’ll be okay without me?” sebastian hums, raising an eyebrow as he stands in her hotel room. he sinks into her pillows on the bed as he watches the young girl darting around the room to gather her things. “i can come if you want.”
“logan and oscar will be with me,” she grins, scrunching her nose with a soft giggle. “unless you would like to come with us, seb?”
he scoffs, folding his arms over his chest. “no way. i don’t understand valorant like you kids — i would have more questions than anything else. you don’t want that, kid.”
she laughs, shoving her items into her small purse. “it’s blythe’s finals! and i’m just as clueless about valorant as you are. the 3 of us know nothing.”
“i’m just upset you hadn’t invited me in the first place.”
“it was last minute! just come with us, seb!”
“i don’t have a ticket.”
“one of the players’ my sister. we’ll find a way to get you in without a ticket.”
sebastian raises his eyebrow. “wow, corruption has gotten to you quick.”
“no, that’s literally how we’re able to attend. blythe pulled strings.”
he rolls his eyes, a small smile growing on his lips as he pushes himself off the bed. he actually does want to come along. finding out he wasn’t even part of the original plan hurt, yes, but he doesn’t want to push himself to be a part of plans that he’s not invited to.
“okay, if you insist.”
las vegas, 2023
she raises an eyebrow, scoffing. “you’re fucking kidding, right?”
max raises his eyebrows, turning to the girl with an impressed grin. while she’s not one to shy from cussing away from cameras, doing it with a room full of cameras and reporters is simply a different thing. he glances at sebastian who has his chest puffed out and eyebrows furrowed since the question was being asked.
the question was easy: how do you do your hair for race weekends, and how does it always look good after the race?
kimi is right, his lecture that weekend in austin has finally taken its mark in her brain. why are all the questions directed at her during press conferences always redirected back to her womanhood?
if she wanted to be asked about her makeup routine and collection, she’d have started an instagram live instead of wasting her time on this stupid couch.
“it’s unfair, don’t you think? you’ve asked me one question about racing, now suddenly it’s about my hair?”
“in a sense that–“
“i’m just curious. i’ve raced the races of what i can give this year to prove that i should be respected as a driver. why are you asking me about my hair?” she raises an eyebrow. “you’re a 50-year-old man. what have you got to learn from my haircare routine?”
max snorts and sebastian bursts into laughter. she clenches her jaw, genuinely getting slightly agitated. she meets sebastian’s eyes who only gives her a thumbs up with the proudest smile.
it’s nice to finally see her standing up for herself.
abu dhabi, 2023
sebastian holds the phone up to his ear, looking into the designated car that she’d taken to the paddocks that night.
“yeah?” a soft voice comes through, getting overshadowed by the loud music in the background. “what’s up, seb?”
“where are you? i’m at your car.”
he hears her hum in confusion. “what do you mean? i’m already in the paddocks, seb.”
he scratches his head, raising his eyebrow as he looks towards the busy entrance of the paddocks. “what do you mean? i thought you’d wait for me outside? aren’t logan and oscar coming in later than we are?”
“yes. but i arrived before you so i thought i’d just wait for you here,” she explains. “did i forget something?”
“no, it’s just,” he sighs and starts making his way to the row of gantries, “you’d usually wait for me if you were by yourself. i thought we were doing the same — i completely forgot that you’re a big girl now.”
he hears her laugh, louder and wholeheartedly. “seb, that’s so sweet! i can’t believe you looked for me even though i haven’t said anything!”
he rolls his eyes. “oh, shut up.”
— bonus
“seb, look what i got you over the break!” she shrieks, jogging into his room with a paper bag in her hands. “i got us matching somethings!”
he raises an eyebrow, looking up from his phone. “what? you got me something?”
“yeah! i wouldn’t have gotten my first points without you, so i wanted to get us something to celebrate our first points as a duo,” she giggles, sitting on the seat on the other side of the table.
she puts the paper bag down and starts pulling a set of mug out of it. she hands him a mug and holds up her own excitedly.
he looks at the mug. it’s got her name on the handle and her signature messily printed over their names mushed together into one in big and blocky purple letters.
“look at the bottom.”
‘long live — all the magic we made’ with the date of the australia race is carved into the bottom of the mug.
he smiles, looking up. “you really didn’t have to, kid. but thank you. this is so thoughtful.”
she claps silently, jumping on the spot with a giggle. “it’s just a small token to remember one of the times we made history together.”

Series Masterlist
Tumblr media
PART 4
The reciprocity of Gemma's Instagram follow adds a layer of anticipation to Lando's daily routine. He finds himself frequently checking her profile, eagerly awaiting any new posts. However, Gemma maintains a certain mystery by refraining from sharing updates, leaving Lando to wonder about her activities.
As Gemma embarks on her first day in the paddock, she arrives early, greeted by the buzz of mechanics and a few interns. The morning unfolds in the McLaren hospitality suite, where she enjoys a quiet breakfast with newfound friends before the chaos of the day's activities commences.
Simultaneously, Lando, accompanied by his trainer, Jon, and Max, arrives early at the circuit. After engaging with fans and signing autographs, he eventually makes his way to the hospitality suite. Upon entering, Lando's eyes immediately scan the room, and his gaze locks onto Gemma's side profile. A brief moment of surprise and recognition crosses his face as he freezes in place. Gemma, initially unaware of his presence, turns to see who has entered the suite. When their eyes meet for the first time in weeks, a warm smile lingers on her lips, but before any further interaction can unfold, Lando hastily rushes out towards the garage. The unexpected encounter stirs a mix of emotions within Lando, leaving him grappling with the impact of seeing Gemma again after weeks of anticipation.
“Mate, where are you going? I thought you wanted breakfast?” Max asks as he hurries after his friend.
“She’s here. Why’s she here? She said she worked at the factory. What’s she doing here?” Lando blasts as he finds his driver’s room.
“Alright, calm down. It’s just a girl.” Max retorts.
“That’s not just a random girl, Max.” Lando breathes.
“Yeah, I think we’ve established that she’s your soulmate.” Max jokes and shakes his head at his friend.
As Lando sits down and pulls up Gemma's Instagram, he discovers a recent Story that she posted just before he arrived at the circuit. The image captures her breakfast with a caption that reads, 'First day things.' The realisation that she did share a glimpse into her day brings a mix of relief and curiosity to Lando. However, before he can delve deeper into his thoughts, his PR manager interrupts, urging him to join her for some media questions.
Meanwhile, Gemma, still in the hospitality suite, feels a sense of confusion over Lando's abrupt departure. His hurried exit leaves her pondering, and doubt creeps in—did he misinterpret something, or did he think she lied to him about her job? Gathering her things, she decides to head to the garage, still mulling over the unexpected encounter. As she makes her way toward the area where the cars are located, lost in her thoughts, she inadvertently collides with someone turning the corner.
The collision interrupts Gemma's internal musings, forcing her attention back to the present moment. She looks up to find herself face to face with a familiar face. The realisation dawns as she meets the eyes of the person she crashed into—a member of the McLaren team. The unexpected collision becomes a moment of connection, a reminder that amidst the chaos of the paddock, there are still opportunities for unexpected encounters and perhaps a chance to clarify the misunderstanding with Lando.
“Gemma.” Lando blurts out when he sees who he’s bumped into.
“Hi.” Gemma greets him as his PR manager stays behind him.
“You’re here.” Lando comments, surprise clear on his face.
“I got a promotion.” She explains.
“Gemma will be one of the analysts for Oscar’s car.” Susan, Lando’s PR manager, states, clarifying Gemma’s role and presence in the paddock.
“That’s great, congratulations.” Lando responds, turning back to face Gemma.
“Thanks.” Gemma smiles, suddenly feeling flustered and uncomfortable under his gaze. “I’ve got to get set up.”
Gemma smiles at Lando once more before she disappears to the pit wall. Lando watches her departure, appreciating the sight of Gemma dressed in the McLaren uniform and sneakers, a far cry from the elegant attire of the gala night. Despite the differences, he finds a certain allure in seeing her don the iconic papaya colours of the team.
“I didn’t know you two knew each other.” Susan comments as they get back to walking to the media pen.
“We met at the launch.” Lando explains. “She’s a smart one. Good thing she’s helping us here, though.”
“I’ll rather not ask for any more information, but, please Lando, don’t make a mess of it with her. Just keep your head down and focus on racing.” Susan suggests. “We’re looking to win a championship, not having to diffuse any scandals.”
“Yeah, we’re just friends.” Lando agrees as he follows Susan to the media pen.
As Gemma reaches the pit wall, Zak Brown, McLaren's CEO, leaps out of his seat with a welcoming smile. Eager to acknowledge Gemma's presence and contributions, he extends his hand to shake hers. With genuine enthusiasm, Zak introduces her to the engineers and team members gathered around him, highlighting her role as one of the analysts for Oscar's car.
Gemma, grateful for the warm reception, exchanges greetings with the engineers. The pit wall becomes a dynamic space buzzing with activity, and Gemma quickly immerses herself in the professional environment. As she takes her place among the McLaren team, the camaraderie and shared passion for racing create a sense of belonging, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her career within the world of Formula 1.
“I was so happy to hear you accepted our offer.” Zak comments.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity, thank you.” Gemma states as Oscar approaches them.
“Oscar!” Zak exclaims. “Just in time. Oscar, this is Gemma Mayfield. She’s going to be one of the analysts for your car.”
“Hi, very nice to meet you.” Oscar greets Gemma and shakes her hand.
“Nice to meet you too, Oscar.” Gemma responds.
As the conversation unfolds on the pit wall, Gemma and Oscar delve into the intricacies of the upcoming race. They discuss Oscar's expectations based on pre-season testing, analysing data and strategies to ensure a strong performance on the track. The professional exchange transitions into a more personal topic as Oscar mentions his girlfriend's interest in karting but reluctance to let him be her teacher.
Gemma, always up for a challenge, offers a solution. “Tell Lily I'd be happy to take her out for a karting experience during the season. I can keep an eye on her while you focus on your racing duties.” Gemma suggests with a friendly smile.
Oscar, appreciative of the offer, gladly exchanges numbers with Gemma to facilitate the planning of this karting excursion for Lily. The exchange not only solidifies a professional connection but also introduces a friendly dynamic between Gemma and Oscar, creating a sense of camaraderie within the McLaren team as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming race season.
In the brief interlude between FP1 and FP2, Oscar and Lando find themselves engaged in conversation. The atmosphere in the McLaren garage is alive with the sounds of mechanics fine-tuning the cars, and the air is charged with the anticipation of the upcoming session.
“Have you met your new data analyst yet?” Lando wonders.
“Gemma? Yeah, she’s great.” Oscar responds. “She’s offered to take Lily karting.”
“Did she?” Lando smiles.
“Wait. Why’re you asking about my data analyst?” Oscar asks.
“No reason, really. I met her at the car launch and haven’t really spoken to her since. She was still working in the factory at that point.” Lando explains.
“Ah. She doesn’t happen to be the mystery girl you’ve been hinting at since pre-season testing?” Oscar teases with a knowing look.
“Possibly.” Lando shrugs.
“I can send you her number if you ask nicely.” Oscar informs his teammate.
“Please, Osc.” Lando pleads. Oscar chuckles before unlocking his screen and sending Gemma’s number to Lando.
“Just don’t tell her I gave it to you.” Oscar implores.
“I won’t. Thanks, mate.” Lando speaks as he heads to his driver’s room.
In the quiet solitude of his hotel room after the second practice session, Lando finds himself caught in a whirlwind of contemplation. The ambient glow from the bedside lamp casts a warm hue across the room as he sits on the edge of the bed, fingers idly tapping on his phone screen, contemplating the decision to reach out to Gemma. The weight of unspoken words and lingering emotions hangs in the air, leaving him both hesitant and eager to bridge the gap that has formed between them.
With Gemma's contact pulled up on his phone, Lando stares at the screen, pondering the right words to convey the complexity of his thoughts. The room seems to echo with the tension of unspoken sentiments, and after a moment of internal debate, he presses the call button, the device coming to life as he holds it to his ear.
As the phone rings, thoughts race through Lando's mind, each chime signalling a step closer to an uncertain outcome. Finally, Gemma's voice breaks the silence on the other end of the line.
“Hello?” Gemma asks once she answers the phone, her voice filled with a mixture of curiosity and surprise.
“Hi, stranger.” Lando replies, a playful tone underscoring his words.
“Lando?” Gemma questions, her voice betraying a hint of uncertainty.
“Happy to hear you recognise my voice.” He teases, attempting to lighten the atmosphere.
“Mmh.” She hums in response, her voice a soft acknowledgment that lingers in the air.
“You know, I’ve got a bone to pick with you.” He tells her, his tone playful yet carrying a hint of genuine concern.
“You do?” She replies, curiosity colouring her response.
“Yeah. I give you possibly the best night of your life only for you to dip before I even wake up.” He informs her, a blend of humour and mild reproach in his words. The atmosphere between them holds a mix of lighthearted banter and an underlying current of vulnerability, as if they are tiptoeing around the unspoken emotions that linger in the wake of their shared experience.
“I did leave you a gift, though, didn’t I?” Gemma counters, taunting him.
“So you did. But, I couldn’t even make you breakfast.” He adds.
“It was just a one time thing, Lando. I didn’t think it would be appropriate to expect breakfast.” She explains. “No strings, remember?”
“So, we can’t even be friends?” Lando wonders.
“Friends?” Gemma repeats.
“Or nothing at all.” Lando quickly replies.
“We can be friends.” Gemma finally agrees.
“You don’t regret anything?” Lando asks.
“No, I most certainly do not regret a thing.” Gemma assures him. “Do you?”
“I would be insane if I did.” Lando responds, causing Gemma to chuckle.
“You’re quite persistent.” Gemma states.
“Again, I’d be insane if I wasn’t.” He informs her. “So, tell me, would my friend like to join me for dinner later?”
“Lando-” She starts, but cuts herself off. “Let’s just be friends first before we do anything together, especially alone.”
“Yeah, that makes sense.” Lando reluctantly agrees. Gemma was dead set on keeping things professional and to keep their one time fling in the past.
“But, I’ll have breakfast with you in hospitality before qualifying.” Gemma suggests as a consolation. “You know, to make up for the fact that I left before you woke up.”
“I’ll take that.” Lando smiles, even though she can’t see him.
Their conversation, though laced with playful banter, hints at a complex mix of emotions and unspoken desires, leaving the future of their connection uncertain yet intriguing.

To celebrate and promote DC/Marvel crossovers, we’re hosting a “fanworks of fanworks” event!
Participants create fanworks in various mediums of existing crossover fics. The idea is to connect a community of writers, artists, and appreciators of DC/Marvel crossovers.
More under the cut, or in doc form here.
How it Works:
Writers submit a bookmark of their existing DC/Marvel crossover work (one fic or series per submitting author) to an Ao3 collection. Writers will also need to create at least one fanwork (any medium) of another author’s fic, but that comes later; see step 2. After bookmarking your fic, complete this form.
You do not have to submit a fic to participate! Participants sign on to create up to five fanworks of submitted fics, within the following categories: playlist, art, collage/moodboard, remix fic, timestamp/sequel fic, and podfic. Details below. If you’re interested in fanworking (but aren’t submitting a fic) and you want an email with a ping once the submission period closes, put your email on the list here!
Writers and fanworkers are encouraged to share ideas and promote each other’s work!
Guidelines for the Event:
Writers will be able to indicate which types of fanwork they’re okay with their fic receiving. Each fic submitted will receive at least one fanwork, but can receive up to one of each type. A fic cannot receive more than one of each type of work.
If participants choose to create more than one fanwork, they each need to be for a different fic — you can’t sign on to do more than one type for the same fic. Participants can do more than one of a type (as long as they’re for different fics). For example, you can do playlists for up to five different fics, or a playlist for two fics plus a remix for three fics.
Any crossover of Marvel and DC is eligible — no restrictions on content, pairing, or length. But keep in mind that if people don’t want to read your fic, it’s less likely to get multiple claims.
A fic with more than one author can be submitted by one of the authors, even if a co-author has submitted a different fic of their own. The writer who submits the fic is solely responsible for participation and fanwork creation.
Timeline:
January 1 - Fic submissions close; reading window opens! Participants are encouraged to read all the fics in the collection before choosing which ones they’d like to fanwork.
January 14 - First round claims — for writers only, to guarantee that each fic gets at least one fanwork.
January 21 - Open claims start. Once your claim is confirmed on the Big Spreadsheet you can start creating/posting immediately.
February 29 - Tentative deadline for posting fanworks. If a lot of people express interest we may set up staggered posting dates.
Types of Fanworks:
All fanworks need to be posted on Ao3 using the “inspired by” feature. If you need help embedding images or whatever else, we can help you figure that out, but you do need an Ao3 account.
Original art. Digital preferred, but if you’d rather create traditionally and then scan to upload, we can work with that.
Collage/moodboard. You can use a simple grid layout, or get more creative with it. These should have at least nine elements involved.
Playlist. At minimum, ten songs. These will get posted to Ao3 either using a screenshot of the track listing, by typing out each track name/artist, or embedding the playlist. You can also include cover art, explanations of why you chose each song, snippets of lyrics, links to each song on YouTube, etc, if you want to get more in-depth with it.
Timestamp/sequel fic. Maximum 5000 words. Fill in a scene that takes place during the original fic but did not make it into the original story, or write a sequel.
Remix fic. Maximum 5000 words. Put your own spin on the plot of the original fic. Keep the original characters, but you can add additional characters to a scene, or see how one character making a different choice would change the whole plot, or reverse their roles, etc.
Podfic. This one is pretty self-explanatory. Ideally, podfic should be complete by the end of the posting window, but if you’re working with a long fic and want to break it up, make sure you have at least one chapter posted.

✨Fairies Finds✨: New Early Artwork and Promotional Video from 2005 Disney Fairies Japan Website with Gail Carson Levine- Author of Fairy Dust Trilogy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fly with you everyone and happy Friday the 13th! I have been looking into Disney Fairies pre-release stuff ever since some early stuff was posted into Art of Disney Fairies. I have also been interested in media preservation since late 2017 when I found Web Back Then. Truthfully, despite having this interest when trying to find the old Disney Fairies games from my childhood- I never really shared much with the world. I feel like I should remedy that! (this find is relatively recent though I found it yesterday!)
This is a video I found on the Internet Archive from disneyfairies.jp, a promotional page on the Disney Japan website that seems disconnected from the main Disney Fairies page which was a clone of the original website. See here
Through some research the gist of the video is this:
The video starts with an introduction to the original Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, which is interjected with clips from Disney's Peter Pan. Then we see more artwork of Disney Fairies- including unfamilar designs including early Vidia, Rani, Fira etc. According to Part of the Magic, Disney Fairies started development in early 2001- the series was launched fully in 2005. Then Gail (dubbed of course) begins to describe the plot of Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg whilst we see several pictures of this early Disney Fairies art. Interesting pictures as we get to see the very early designs of Disney Fairies characters that I have never seen before.
Interestingly, this video was never embedded on the page, you had to download it and play it through a video player such as Windows Media Player or Real Player, it was 2005 after all.
Tumblr media
Here is the screen you'd see when you'd want to watch this promotional video. I recognize the leaves used in early flash games such as Lightball Challenge, Dragonfly Race etc.
Tumblr media
A page on the website that I found with my decomplier, i couldn't view it normally!
I tried looking for this video in English to no avail, or any version on the internet. It must have only been accessible through this website.
Interestingly, I found this other page whilst doing my page digging thing again and found this, suggesting this was also a Japan exclusive and not for the American market ... and there is more early promotional stuff to be found in relation to Disney Fairies!
Tumblr media
I also looked into one the main book artists on the creative team, Judith Holmes Clarke. She had a website I found on her IMDB page, that was live around 2017-2019. I saw this and wanted to add it as it had one of the stills in this video. It also has a sketch of Rosetta and Tink. This is what I found:
Tumblr media
It is probably a scan of this magazine, Disney Newsreel, mentioned on her IMDB.
Overall, I'm super happy with this find and I'm so happy to share it with you all!! I will be happy to share more now that I'm publicly outing myself not just as this fan of children's fairy media- an archivist. gasp...
Also probably making a website/blog which I will share later and will be in the About Me link with my other socials.
Tumblr media
And believe me, this is just the beginning

[incomplete] Unofficial miscellaneous Mayura trivia
What is the meaning of the ‘Wiz’ in ‘Nanika Wiz Mayura’?
Nanika with (ghost name) was a common format for ghost titles, starting with Sakura/Nin-i-tan
A tribute and clever pun to the legendary Wizardry series - a series of role-playing video games, developed by Sir-Tech, that were highly influential in the evolution of modern role-playing video games. The original Wizardry (released in 1981)was a significant influence on early console role-playing games such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Originally made for the Apple II, the games were later ported to other platforms.
Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna, released by Sir-Tech in 1987, is famously the hardest game in the history of computer RPGs. There is nothing harder. The majority of those who have played it were unable to leave the very first room. It’s like the ancient blueprint of the RPGs we know and love today.
I find it a groundbreaking feat that the game was re-programmed from scratch and is somewhat playable within Mayura’s dialogue, despite being an English game this is the biggest obstacle to translate for me.
Wizardry has recently opened an official english site for the first time to promote the remake, you can see the history of it there
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
help, I don't understand Mayura's references!
That's okay, me neither when it comes to many of them.
many of her references stem from a magazine called Micom BASIC(マイコン BASIC), one of the oldest running gaming magazines focusing on microcomputers.
up until as recently as 2022 it was near impossible to find any archives of Micom BASIC, but you can check out some scans of them (untranslated) here:
 https://retrocdn.net/Category:Micom_BASIC_scans
https://archive.org/details/micomBASIC19841994
also highly recommend this translator's blog if this sort of stuff interests you - @thearkhound they've made some really accurate and insightful english translations of never before seen interviews with legendary game devs like Shigeru Miyamoto from Micom BASIC.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
but as someone who struggles with having the attention span to complete classic RPGs  (many being obscure, japan release only and too expensive on the second hand market as well) it's helped me immensely to casually watch Gamecenter CX and the Wizardry OVA to get a better grasp of some of the terms and spells she uses.

Some versions of your translation differ with what club Mayura is the president of, what’s the deal with that? Which club is she the president of?
To be honest it’s hard to say because she changes the answer every time, but there is a part of Mayura’s script as well as a little javascript code on her now defunct official blog which randomly generates a club title, picking from various retro gaming keywords, before twitter’s API was destroyed there was a widget where you could hit 'join club' by sharing it to a Twitter hashtag. from what I can gather She’s formed a whole lot of gaming clubs and is simultaneously leading all of them at once.
How come Mayura identifies as both a wizard and a girl? (or ‘Why is she a Digital Witch?’)
(a few explanations for this but TLDR; there’s a ton of inconsistencies spanning my various translations of Mukei’s homepage, it seems like wizard and witch are interchangeable in retro RPGS, sorry if it’s confusing)
During the earliest days of RPGs ( especially J-RPGS from the years 1982-1987), Wizard was usually a gender neutral or unisex character class.
Tumblr media
Native Japanese speakers say “mahoutsukai” normally to mean ‘wizard’ in Japanese. mahoutsukai – 魔法使い (まほうつかい) : a noun meaning ‘wizard’ in Japanese. This can also work as plural. Depending on the context and situation, this can also mean ‘witch’ in Japanese.
The Japanese kanji for ‘wizard’ is Mahou Tsukai, which is directly ‘Magic user’ and does not specify a gender, Mayura’s favourite game (and ghost namesake) is Wizardry and a majority of her personality and dialogue is based around it, so it felt fitting to translate it to Wizard.
“Witch”/”Digital Witch” and “Wizard” are used in english interchangeably in (untranslated) 2010s iteration of Mayura’s blog so I'd say it's probably up to personal preference, both are correct
in the history of programming, Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (SICP) is a computer science textbook by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professors Harold Abelson and Gerald Jay Sussman with Julie Sussman. It is known as the "Wizard Book" in hacker culture and refers to programming or hacking as magic, using sorcerer's spells to invoke the processes within the machine . (which I'm too uneducated to fully understand but my reasoning is that wizards = hacker and technology related)
Why does Mayura speak so strangely?
Her only knowledge of human culture or the 21st century is learnt solely through archaic RPGs and reading through strategy guides or obscure out of print magazines like Micom BASIC. According to her extended lore, 400 years ago she was a human living in the real world,  but she was an orphan and the village she lived in shunned her and tried to burn her at the stake. it's said in some of the Mayura Maniacs reference sheets that before her current life as a desktop buddy, she was an orphan and an alchemist named Unyx took her in as his student, protecting her and teaching her to control her magic powers. in order to save her from being executed, he had to transmute her soul into a 6-pointed star bracelet. Mayura was 20 years old at that time and lost all memory of her previous life when she was re-awakened in the 20th century and many of her favorite games were released in the founding years of gaming before my time during the 80s and 90s

Trigun Ultimate Overhaul Update: Magazine to Book, the unseen art.
OVERHAUL FRIDAY 01/06/23 - MAGAZINE TO BOOK, the unseen art.
Welcome everyone and happy New Year!
This will be our first post of the year and we're excited to enter this year, as it will be a big one for Overhaul 2.0. We hope you enjoyed the Multiple Bullets release and that the new scans were to your liking. It may have been the first time for some of you reading those extra chapters, so to continue the theme of never before seen things, we want to share a few things from the magazines.
A quick few notes before showing these examples.
The quality of the images will be varied, as magazine paper is very rough and lower quality, so the grooves of the old paper can be very clear on black print. These scans are not representative of Overhaul 2.0 quality scans, as they are scanned from the book releases. All information and imagery in magazine releases that since have been changed for the final release is no longer considered canon.
PREVIEWS:
Tumblr media
(Above: TriMax vol 5, chapter 6, page 172. Magazine version.)
There are a few hotspots for when a lot of changes happen. These are usually around important and emotional events, moments where the tiniest details can be important for the weight it might carry. If the scene comes across as jagged or incoherent, then the entire mood can be ruined for the scene.
One of the bigger series of changes happen in the last chapter of TriMax volume 5, here several pages in a row are different, along with different dialogue too.
~
Tumblr media
(Above: TriMax vol 5, chapter 6, page 168. Magazine version.
Translation reads: "I will not sway. I will no longer yield. I will make a stand."
This earlier dialogue gives a very different mood from what we eventually got in the book, where he instead apologizes over and over again. It reflects some kind of resistance to outside factors, be it Knives’ influence or his own powers, it's hard to tell.
A fantastic piece of art that eventually didn't get, but at least we can enjoy it this way nonetheless.

TriMax vol 5, chapter 6, page 174. Magazine version.
Some of you might already spot the deal with this page, but to those who haven't noticed it yet. Nightow accidently drew Vash with his black hair here despite it being a flashback from when he was fully blond. The art is still really nice, but I personally really appreciate that he turns this page into a two page spread for the final release.
~
Tumblr media
TriMax vol 8, chapter 1, page 39. Magazine version.
Another scene that has been heavily altered, though I will only show this smaller example, as the changes are many tiny panels of similar but different art from the final version. I feel like this example serves as the most prominent change, as a couple of pages of Knives reacting was simply a single panel originally. Some of the dialogue was also different in this release, but we've yet come around to translating it. We'll share more info on changed dialogue some time in the future.
~
Tumblr media
TriMax vol 10, chapter 3, page 73. Magazine version.
Tumblr media
TriMax vol 10, chapter 3, page 74. Magazine version.
Another series of big changes for several pages in a row. Not much to share about these beyond the fact the art is amazing, but what is being conveyed is also a little confusing, so it's no wonder things got changed up as they did.
I'll let the pictures speak for themselves as I share the last pieces of interesting art from this volume.

Last we've got another thing to show, which is future content that we'll be releasing. There are a few tiny comics here and there for Trigun, usually marketing material, and these haven't been posted and translated online before.
We're currently working on cleaning these comics up and translating them. They'll eventually be uploaded as a small standalone release, but here is a small teaser of some early Trigun material.

And with these pictures and info shared, we haven't got anything left to show off for this post!
MORE INFO NEXT WEEK!

Meddling Kids VIII
WARNING! This work/series contains mentions of slut shaming, EDs, gore, implied torture, implied SA, SH, violence, and many other things that can trigger some viewers. I will also mention that this work does NOT intend to glorify, romanticize, normalize, or promote ANY of these behaviors or ideas. That is not who I am and that is not what I stand for. Please do not take that message away when you read this.
This is a Manhunt/Bully crossover, so expect non-family friendly shenanigans.
Well, they weren’t going to get anything out of Max, which sucked. He was probably the only one with any dirt on cases. Jimmy had zero plans. Lucky for him, he had two best friends with a shared brain cell.
“Well, there’s gotta be something on their permanent records about this,” Pete suggested.
“You’re right. They have to document that for legal purposes,” Gary nodded, sitting up.
“I have a key to Crabblesnitch’s files,” Pete said.
“Sweet. Let’s go,” Jimmy stood.
The trio shuffled out of the library. The air started to warm up as February began to die. Spring was near. The football season for Bullworth and the surrounding schools would start up soon. Jimmy was never much of a football fan. Sure, he’d sit down and watch it with whichever stepdad was around. But for the most part, Jimmy was more interested in the music industry. The only sport he enjoyed was boxing. Even then, it depended on which rich bitch he was in the ring with.
Once upstairs, they peered into the office. Neither Ms. Danvers nor Dr. Crabblesnitch were in there.
Perfect.
Petey barged in first and grabbed the keys out of his pocket. Jimmy stood by the door to watch for prefects or any other authority.
Petey unlocked each cabinet one by one. Gary began to search through them. Most of the filed paperwork was just accident reports and work orders on various equipment. Nothing too special. Pete knelt and unlocked the last drawer.
School records. Just what they needed.
Gary dove in, pulling up any files relating to Johnny and Norton. Pete took them with care. Jimmy snuffled his way over, nosily rummaging around in the file cabinets and drawers. No wonder Christy loved gossip so much. Being nosy was fun.
“Dude, let’s look through these old yearbooks,” Gary grinned.
Jimmy smiled as he reached into a drawer, retrieving a book that was probably older than his stepdad.
“Bullworth Academy, Class of 1985,” Jimmy leaned back on the wall, and Gary joined at his side.
He flipped the book open, the inside bare of any signatures. Gary leaned over and flipped the pages. Within a few minutes, they were already giggling up a storm. They thoroughly enjoyed their Mean Girls-esque fun. Good god, the outfits. Not to mention the goofy ass hairstyles they wore. Jimmy wondered how their parents let them go out dressed like casual clowns.
“I’d rather kill myself than wear that,” Gary sneered, pointing to one girl who looked like she’d gotten electrocuted.
“This makes me glad I’m bald,” he replied, flipping a page.
Gary’s eyes scanned the names, his eyes falling on one. His face changed completely. Petey turned over to them and raised a brow. Gary looked like a kicked puppy almost. Hero to zero.
“What’s wrong?” Jimmy turned his head.
Gary pointed to one portrait, “that’s my older brother.”
“Since when did you have an older brother?” Jimmy knitted his brows in confusion.
“Since the day I was born,” Gary replied.
“You walked right into that one Jimmy,” Pete spun in Crabblesnitch’s chair.
Jimmy rolled his eyes to the sky and looked back at the yearbook. Gary’s finger still pointed to the face. Under it read the name ‘Leroy Elwood Smith’ that sounded like a grandpa's name. He looked a lot like Gary, but only with dimples and a douchebag mullet with a matching mustache.
He couldn’t help but notice the stale silence in the room.
“So, uh, what happened?...” Jimmy asked with hesitance.
Petey looked at Gary, who seemed to be in a trance.
“Leo committed suicide in 2001, after September 11,” Pete answered, looking down.
Ouch. That was heavy.
Gary slowly pulled the book into his lap. He flipped through pages and only stopped at the ones with his older brother in the pictures. Jimmy looked on alongside him. Leo seemed like a great person. A lot of the photos he was in included him with friends. One boy specifically. Daniel Lamb. That name sounded familiar. Jimmy remembered hearing it from somewhere.
As soon as Gary started to develop tears, Pete grabbed the yearbook and closed it.
“We should go,” he stood.
“Yeah, good idea,” Gary shook his head.
Jimmy stood, making sure all the drawers and cabinets were closed before they left. The last thing they needed was a suspension for being nosy, meddling kids.
Gary snatched the yearbook from Pete on their way out, giving a dirty side-eye.
For the rest of the day Jimmy wracked his brain for any ideas. He was stumped. He was creative, yes. But not in the Scooby-Doo mystery-solving way. Maybe if he watched some Law & Order Special Victims Unit, Jimmy could improve that. Gary watched that show all the time with Parker Oglivie.
But at the stroke of midnight, Jimmy’s rock brain finally sparked.
Happy Volts.
That asylum had all they needed. Records and maniacs.
Jimmy put on his clothes and slipped out of the dorms. He dodged Edward’s flashlight. Better safe than sorry. The snow had now thankfully begun to melt, leaving less evidence of his escape. Winter was the worst time of year to sneak out. Unless you had those dumb tennis racket snow shoes to cover your tracks still, Seth Kolbe or Diana Prescott would mow your as down until you became a snow angel. Regardless of heels and house slippers being their respective choices choice of footwear.
Jimmy made it to the gym, ducking down inside to evade Max Mactavish. He’d been more aggressive since Edward’s nasty confrontation with him. And Jimmy didn’t feel like getting bodyslammed into the cold pavement tonight.
He walked around with squinted eyes to see in the dark. He could see from what little light the swimming pool and exit signs gave, but other than that it was pitch black. It made him uneasy. Alone in a dark, empty gymnasium.
His hair stood on end when he heard the door open.
Jimmy darted down the stairs and ducked into the boy’s locker room. He hid amongst a pile of discarded towels in the far corner facing the lockers. He was busted. Done. If he was lucky it would be a prefect and not whatever maniacs had killed Alice Cuellar. He knew he knew too much. Oh god, the DA probably hired those sick freaks to kill him.
“Come on, let’s go,” A voice whispered from outside.
They sounded young. But it could be those skully guys Edward was rolling with, all of them looked pretty young.
“Move, Sonny! Geez!” one hissed.
“Sorry!”
The footsteps clambered into the locker room.
“You got the bolt cutters?”
“Of course I do, dumbass.”
“Good.”
Jimmy peeked from the towels.
His eyes widened. These were kids his age.
One was tall with long blonde hair tied back into a high ponytail. Jimmy could tell that it was a guy by the confirmation of their arms and legs. Good god, that boy was big.
The one in the middle was criminally small. He had to have been shorter than Jimmy. It boosted his ego, knowing he wasn’t that short. He had short hair in a classic jock cut.
The third guy was tall and skinny with an obnoxious neon green liberty spike mohawk. Jimmy could vaguely see his unique choice of punk fashion from his towel hidey-hole. The guy also held a pair of bolt cutters.
“Quick! We might get caught,” the blonde urged.
“Sonny quit being such a pussy,” the short one bit.
“Maverick, hold the lock,” the punk-looking guy ordered.
The shorter one, presumably named Maverick, stepped up and held the lock. The punk took the bolt cutters and quickly broke the lock. The blonde ripped the chain out as they pried the door open.
Jimmy watched in disbelief as these guys took out the mascot. They didn't even go to Bullworth. He could tell by their red uniform attire.
He was not going to let this slide.
“Hey! What are you doing!?” Jimmy hollered as he stood from his pile of towels.
“Shit- go, go, go!” The punk pushed, the other two running out with the mascot.
Jimmy dove at him and delivered a blow to his temple. He staggered back and swung the bolt cutters to hit Jimmy in the side of the head. He fell to the ground with a yell as the punk ran.
Jimmy quickly came to his senses and got up. He chased after the thieves until they were in the parking lot.
“Payback motherfucker!” Maverick yelled from the car window with his middle finger up as they sped off, leaving Jimmy in the dust.
He had to get that mascot back.

Thanks for your album comparison! What about covers and promotional pictures in general (for both singles and albums)? Which one do you like the most? Is there a style they chose that you find the prettiest? You can rate your favourite pictures looking at the girls' solo careers individually but it would also be interesting to compare them!
Hello again! 🤗
Sorry it’s taking me so long to get back to you, I always have a bunch of asks in my drafts and I try my best to work through them in more or less chronological order 🙈
First of all, for me personally Wakana is the clear winner when it comes to visuals. Her photo shoots are ✨top-tier✨ with no exception [even if her outfits look atrocious at times XD] ! Say what you will about Space Craft but they definitely don’t shy away from investing a lot of money in high-quality promotional material and merchandise. We are constantly getting gorgeous pamphlets, special photo spreads for her fan club magazines and of course a variety of photo booklets/books for her music releases. Nothing of that sort exists for Keiko’s and Hikaru’s solo work. One might argue that it’s not necessary since the focus should be on the music rather than the artist’s visuals but meh, let’s be real here, in many cases it’s those specific “idol” marketing strategies that bring in the big money and not the music itself. On a side note, Wakana is just so freaking photogenic, especially when it comes to professional shoots like this. Despite Keiko’s otherworldly beauty, she somehow always manages to look kinda awkward in at least 80% of her staged photo shoots. There honestly haven’t been enough releases from Hikaru that contained a proper amount of visuals so it’s hard to even compare her to Wakana and Keiko.
Without further ado, let’s get to my faves〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→
Wakana
Tumblr media
Wakana - magic moment [Regular Edition]
Comment: Look at her!!! Just look at this goddess! Can you believe that this was part of the regular edition credits booklet?!! Now THAT’s how you make people buy useless regular editions! By adding the most beautiful pictures of your artist! I love every single shot. Her hair, her outfit! The locations! Perfection! I don’t even mind the random fabrics on the ground. I have absolutely no idea how you would adequately translate a theme like “magic moment” into visuals so I am not mad that they simply went for an urban but still open setting.
Keiko
Tumblr media
Keiko - dew [Limited Edition]
Comment: This is 100% my aesthetic, it’s unbelievably beautiful! Probably would have been my overall #1 if there had actually been more than just a few shots in the super pricey limited edition. They were really lazy with the booklets of the other editions and I’m still bitter about that. But other than that, no complaints from me. As far as I am concerned, these are perfect visuals! All the pink, the girly outfit, the messy bun, the misty glass. Stunning! And it reflects the image of the album title “dew” pretty well. Generally I am a big fan of most of Keiko’s promo and cover images (“Ray / 始まりは” & "桜をごらん / 笑ってやる” are probably my favourite single covers) but it’s a shame we are only ever getting one or two shots and not an entire photo series. Call me shallow but I want more of those pictures, preferably in physical format!
Hikaru
Tumblr media
Hikaru - disclose [Tokuten Postcard]
Comment: I really struggle to pick something for Hikaru. Don’t get me wrong, she always looks flawless in her cover shoots but for the most part, there is just not a lot to choose from and I might actually prefer how she looks in her tokuten postcards because those visuals are typically a little more daring. Unfortunately I don’t own all of them so I just went with the one above. Overall, I enjoy her “disclose” visuals most, maybe because they are very reminiscent of Kalafina?  Who knows? Either way, her dress is gorgeous and the cover design is suitably dark.
Everyone, feel free to share your faves! For reference you can check out my scan tags 〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→

Request Information
Hi! Welcome to the request page, thank you for considering my translations! I am a fan translator and NOT by any means a professional, just someone with a years-long thing for Japanese linguistics and media and a little experience doing the occasional favor for friends as a hobby! That being said, I will not and never will on this blog accept paid translation commissions. I only put out what I consider to be the best of my ability, but all of my work is done on my own terms and the quality you see in my archive is what you can expect from a request made here!
General Information and TOS
I reserve the right to refuse a request for any reason.
If I refuse your request, please do not try the same one again at a different time looking for another answer. Making another request of a different nature is fine.
If you have made a request, please wait until the one you've already made is finished or refused before making another.
My work is intended first and foremost for personal use, spreading information or as a shared study in the language. I am not doing this as a gotcha to any official translation team (in the case that there is one). I am not comfortable with my words being used to poke holes at the work of others. PLEASE be respectful towards the source material. PLEASE be respectful towards other translators.
Do not edit your request into any scans. Do not edit any of my translations into scans.
Requests can be submitted via either the ask box or DMs. I might take it to DMs anyways if I need additional confirmation or context.
Requesting anonymously is fine, but ones with aforementioned extra requirements may be refused since I won't be able to reach out about it.
I'll tag you when/if I post your finished request unless you ask me not to. If you requested anonymously, you'll have to check back and find it yourself.
I won't post every request that comes through DMs, if you just want something for personal use it will probably be left that way.
I will reserve the right to post whichever ones I want to or find relevant, at which time I will ask if you'd like to be tagged or left anonymous in said post.
If you need to engage further questions/discussion/collaboration in regards to the translation, please feel free to do so either privately or publicly on the post itself, either is fine! This is all originally in the interest of further study material both for myself and others, curiosity is never annoying.
These are all done on my own time and at my own pace, it could take less than a day or over a week depending on the volume or complexity of the material and what I have going on irl. I don't provide progress updates, please be patient.
I am open to pretty much any material, but please be mindful that due to the contextual nature of Japanese, the depth of my work and additional context I can provide will increase the more context I have regarding the source material, either provided by you or if you're here for a property I already work on (ex: I've been able to provide additional comparison in how a character was referred to in different teasers due to already being very familiar with the requested series and its promotional material.)
I am strongest in media translation (basically anything with dialogue). I have significantly less experience in more formal pieces or technical and news articles. Some pieces (ex: poetry, certain genres) may require outside analytical skills or historical knowledge that I either do not have or am not comfortable speaking on authoritatively.
If your request is an interview, please provide the fullest transcript you have even if you're only interested in an excerpt or single interaction.
Songs
No special process, just throw 'em at me.
I do not do translyics/singable lyrics.
I will not take songs if I've read an English translation of them before (I know there's no way for you to know this, but just know that it's an extremely likely reason for a refusal so I really recommend checking if there's already another translation ready to go somewhere)
Manga and Games
I don't source raws. If you would like something translated, you will have to bring it to me unless I already have it.
Max amount I will take at one time is 1 chapter of manga, 40 lines of text for a game (gacha interactions, visual novel, along that kind of format)
I am willing and able to work on more intensive game translation projects if you end up with a game you want to play but can't read, but I won't do an entire fan patch lol
I don't edit panels/screenshots or encode dialogue on request. Whatever you request from me will be delivered in text format (please see my translations of Owari no Seraph or Villain for reference). I am willing to provide notation such as page breaks or page numbers to make up for this.
Doujin
Doujin as in indie manga published on a website: That's fine, but may be more likely to be refused depending on the site and scale of the project! You can request it like any other manga if it's free to read, if it's paywalled I will ask for proof that you purchased it and supported the author.
Doujin as in a fan project on someone's personal social media/art account: Never. No exceptions even if you get permission or it's publicly available. Sorry.
Note: This is in reaction to the scale of the project and being thoughtful of the author's personal boundaries, not the nature of the content itself. (i.e. I am open to translating adult material as long as it fits the other criteria idrc lol)
Misc
I'm always open to questions about (my, can't speak for others, not professional ;P) understanding of the language and regarding my and/or official translations as long as they're discussed in a respectful manner.
As long as everything is once again respectful and not used to bother other translators, I don't mind doing comparisons, breakdowns, explanation threads and things like that.
Again, I will only do these for translations that are my own or official. Please do not bring me another fan's work.
I don't mind information I provide being used in theorycrafting, but if you plan to use it please do not attribute your theories to me in part or whole and please do not ask me to comment on the theories themselves. I'm both not familiar with deep lore fandom and also just not really into that.
Promotional material, teasers and announcements are always fine. If said promotion or announcement is in part of a video or archived livestream, I am willing to summarize around specific timestamps if you have them.
Light novels I will take one chapter at a time, but on a case by case basis. They are much more likely to be refused just due to the time required.
Ready to Read Archive is not currently open. Will update if that changes.
You may see audio drama and video subtitling work here at some point, but it is not currently open for request.
Feel free to ask about anything you don't see here!

I found something that I thought was interesting. At some point when I was a kids my brother and me got these two figures at a thrift store or something. Here is a picture of one (the other one, at least for the time, is lost)
Tumblr media
Now doing some research I found a series of toys that looked like they were the origin of this design. They were made by a company called World of Wonder sometime in the 80's. The toys were just sold under the name Germs I think. Below are photos of a set.
Tumblr media
As you can see the third one from the left in the top row matches the design and coloration of the one I have, however its mold and paint job are in poorer quality, and most importantly it has this base. The name of the base is as far as I can tell a completely arbitrary type of yeast. The toys all have specific "scientific names" the one I have for example is called Grumpyrumbleosus and a description of the effect they have, in this case grumpryrumbleosus is said to cause stomach aches. The toy that was lost matches the mold of the second from the right on the bottom row, it too had a base and was of similar quality, however unlike the other one its coloration was completely different, being purple and green. I am not certain what the base said but it was probably similar some microscopic thing or pathogen. I thought this was rather strange so I wanted to share and maybe get your thoughts on it.
I am DELIGHTED to be asked about the GERMS because I have SO much I can say about them!! Here's my incomplete collection behind my leech jars:

The originals came out when I was exactly five years old and I was instantly obsessed, but they were seemingly sold for only a few months before they disappeared. I've heard a rumor that they were recalled because the original test tubes (with the round ends, left) were dangerously sharp if broken, which is probably true, because my others (right) have test tubes made of softer, flimsier, thinner plastic. I actually have two of the "Body Odor" germ, the other one hiding in my collection of pollution creatures. It's my favorite because it looks the most like an almost realistic parasite.

Years later, I'd see your versions as decorations at a pediatric hospital, and I think maybe those are the only two that were repurposed as medical novelties? They're super rare, as far as I know, probably sold only through medical supply catalogs in the 80's or perhaps given to doctors as part of a product promotion. That's still not the end of these, though!

At some point later in time there was a Spanish language collectible card series basically called "Germs of the Body," and nobody knows if it was ripping off the Germs designs or they had the same uncredited character designer, but a few are pretty blatant imitations of specific Germs. Many years ago I did a multi-part review of them here, but a lot of cards have still never been clearly scanned, and can't be because they were holographic only!

Then in the 90's, a decade after the original Germs, there was an Italian ad campaign for kids to promote environmentalism, and you could send away for rubber toys called "Ecologini," each of which was supposed to be a creature that somehow helped the ecosystem:

Their design style is pretty familiar, some just exactly the "Germs" characters and others remixed with different body parts. Again, there's no determining whether they're knockoffs or the same artist. One strong possibility is that after the original toy line was discontinued, the character designs could have been sold cheaply to stock art archives, which would also explain how just a couple were remade into the medical figurines. One thing I do know is that the original toys were made by the same company as the "Teddy Ruxpin" cartoon and toy line, so while the designer of the germs was never credited, I suspect it was the same person who designed Teddy Ruxpin's peripheral characters. It feels especially evident in the look and feel of "Grubby:"

I also know a guy who collects really, really obscure toys and researches toy history, who actually came into possession of "hundreds" of old design documents for the germs including tons of unused designs! I haven't heard from him in a while but he sent me a few dozen of them I made into another article once! Here's one of the coolest that didn't make it into the final line:

I think people who follow my art can probably tell how big an impression this obscure, short lived IP had on me. Some Mortasheen monsters are practically my own fan "Germs" designs.

Thank you for the excuse to overshare about something so very very specific. I should really compile all this into one big site article some day.
