Balancing Act

This conversation was politicized well before Parkland, before Las Vegas, before Sandy Hook. It was politicized the moment politicians accepted money from the National Rifle Association. #ShameOnThemAll

If someone wants to hurt people, they will try to find a way. But why should we make it easy for them? This is not about repealing the Second Amendment. Claims to the contrary are about fear or an effort to spread reductive propaganda in order to profit.

It’s easy to draw a line and connect these dots: the bottom line is about money. It’s always about money in this culture. But the real bottom line, what it’s eventually going to come down to, is sustainability.

NPR reports that over the course of about 3 years, the number of guns manufactured in the U.S. nearly doubled - from 5.5 million to 10.9 million. That figure is from 2013. Two years later, in 2015, The Washington Post reported, “There are now more guns in the United States than people.” There’s a significantly higher number of guns in the United States than in countries like Canada, Australian, and the United Kingdom.

Consequently, the homicide rate in the U.S. is higher than the homicide rate in Canada, Australia, and the UK. The biggest difference in that homicide rate comes from the 60% increase in homicide rates by gun violence in the United States as compared to the other three countries (among many others).

Citizens in other countries don’t boast the right to bear arms -- but that isn’t to say a people can’t responsibly handle this right. There are millions of responsible gun owners.

But we’re not a very healthy society. And this many guns isn’t helping. #commonsense

Gun sales go up in the U.S. after major tragedies, like San Bernadino. These increases have been credited either to rhetoric about gun rights being taken away and a rise in fear about the ability to protect one’s self.

If the premise of the right to bear arms is about maintaining safety, one would think that there would be an interest in safety for all - not in creating a culture in which there’s a free for all when it comes to gun consumption.

If we want to create sustainable communities, we can’t afford to let fear or ego or money stop us from having this conversation. Or from recognizing that our culture could be healthier. Our public spaces could be safer.

A number of things will need to be examined to make this possible... Systems that allow people to slip through the cracks as “low-risk,” and allow warning signs to be missed. Civil dialogue that has been undermined by divisiveness. Public health crises like bullying, drugs, domestic violence and sexual assault. And yes, gun safety laws as well as the number and types of guns that are manufactured. The purpose(s) of guns.

It’s about individual rights and it goes beyond individual rights to create a culture in which people can exist freely and safely.

There’s a balance in there somewhere and it is in our best interest to find it.

Steffi wird es nie zu VS schaffen. Sie und Lena Gercke sind okay, aber Models würde ich die beiden nicht nennen, bekannte TV Faces sind das. Lena ist ja auch inzwischen mehr Moderatorin. Steffi soll an ihren Traum glauben vielleicht wird es mal etwas :)

Sie arbeiten ja schon beide als Model. Lena hat sich ein zweites Standbein mit der Moderation aufgebaut, dass sicher viel Zeit ihres Arbeitsalltags einnimmt, wenn man die Zeit fürs Modeln damit vergleicht. Stefanie ist sehr aktiv in den Social Media, aber sie arbeitet in letzter Zeit stärker an ihrer Modelkarriere, auch jetzt mit Agentur und Wohnung in NY. Und sie hat ja doch ein paar bekanntere Projekte: L’Oreal, Michael Kors, …. Das macht natürlich noch kein “erfolgreiches” Model aus ihr, aber immerhin folgt Ed ihr auf Instagram :D Izabel ist er ja gerade erst entfolgt #shameonhim
