Next, a pair of fanfics! I've been fighting really bad reading brain for a while now, which is SO frustrating when I have a fandom I know I love, authors I know I love, fanfic summaries that have my full attention-- and I can't get myself to start reading. So to try to sidestep that, I went ahead and bound two tossawary fics blind, Servant to a Different King, and A Child Once. It was hard not to go for some of the tossawary fics I've read and loved, but I really want to kickstart my brain into reading new things.

Both of these were a lot of fun to work with! I wanted to get blue somewhere in the binding for both books, because mobei-jun, but I didn't want to just take the lowest-hanging fruit. For Servant to a Different King, it slips in through the endpapers, and for A Child Once, it's the navy bookcloth. The bindings also weren't designed as a pair, but I still like to link things in quiet ways, so I took the endpapers from the same pack, and went with chaotic, high-energy ones, for Shang Qinghua. So I love how these came out, and I'm pleased to report that I've now read A Child Once! (not from my nice new book, that would be silly, i just suddenly unlocked my ability to read it on my phone)

In "Servant to a Different King", one of the reasons that I chose to have Su Xiyan be so blunt about her past mistakes (in private, to a good friend) was to try and make her an interesting partner to Tianlang-Jun. Like, "I'm being more emotionally open now! Emotions and vulnerability are simply also a tool and a weapon to wield against my friends and enemies. :)" And I feel like against Tianlang-Jun, there's really no choice but to own this shit, because there is no amount of awkwardness and discomfort that will STOP HIM from bringing something up and teasing a loved one about it if he gets stubborn (and maybe a little self-destructive). So Su Xiyan has to admit that she's in love and that her own arrogance and ambition nearly killed her, like, "I'm cool with this. I'm so cool about this!" because her only other option is to scream about how fucking humiliated she feels about everything, and she won't do that because it's undignified.

I enjoy Tianlang-Jun and Su Xiyan because I feel like they're both so self-aware and manipulative, and that DID NOT SAVE THEM in canon. I enjoy interpreting them as a "Look at us! Pretending to be in love like ordinary and naïve people!" couple that got fucking bodied ironically by love anyway. "Fatal flaws? Yes, I'm aware of them, and I've decided it's a skill issue- oh, shit."

i'm in the process of watching a bunch of american zombie movies to prep for my honours essay next semester (i'm gonna talk abt them in the context of generational fears!! i'm really excited) and just. man. all the pre-night of the living dead are pretty explicitly racist in some really insidious ways and too many of the post-living dead ones are too

"Servant to a Different King" is definitely a Moshang fic, first and foremost, but it is also my Tianlang-Jun and Su Xiyan fic. I have some unfinished oneshots for them as well, but this is the longest complete thing that I've written for them so far.

They're a background pairing, but very relevant to Shang Qinghua's situation, and it was a lot of fun to get to explore the two of them actually escaping their plotted dooms and getting married. It's all very "Help, the closest things I have to friends are the tyrants of the Demon Realm and they WON'T STOP SUGGESTING double dates!!!" for poor Shang Qinghua.
