so 'The Amazing Digital Circus' has all kinds of fun references and wears its inspiration on its sleeve...
from Popee the Performer (the environment, slapstick, and especially Gangle's masks resembling Kedamono's), to Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach (the inside of The Tent looking very much like the Daycare), to Deltarune (Caine's eye-glitching looking very similar to Spamton's, and of course them casting Alex Rochon as Caine, who is known for his Spamton voice!).
but there's also another neat little set of references which may or may not be deliberate: the nods to Toontown Online!
Toontown Online was an MMORPG where you play as Toons (slapstick-using, brightly coloured, animal cartoon characters) fighting Cogs (evil fun-hating robots based on corporate businesspeople). the game still exists now in fan servers such as Toontown Rewritten and Toontown: Corporate Clash, with a thriving community contributing to new stories and preserving the original game. i noticed a few similarities between Toontown and TADC:
the name generator! when you first enter Toontown, you have the option to choose your name via a random generator. although you can type in your own name, and the names are comprised of separate words rather than letters, the silliness and randomness of it seems very similar to Caine's name generator...additionally, if you typed your own name, you would have to wait to have it approved (ensuring that the name wasn't offensive), much like Caine's quickly-spouted rules about naming!
2. portal travel! one of the big gimmicks of Toontown is that you're able to move between areas by jumping through a portable hole, also known as 'teleporting'. this looks quite similar to the one Gangle and Kinger are pushed through/Jax jumps through to find the Queen of the Gloinks!
3. Jax's appearance! in Toontown, you create your own Toon by selecting from one of the available species, and then changing their colour, height, clothes, and more. a tall purple rabbit is definitely a type of Toon which could be created in the original Toontown game, and his whole playful nature reminds me so much of the game!
as an old fan of Toontown i'm delighted to see these references, and am sure they're on purpose. given that this is The Amazing Digital Circus, i think we're going to see a loooot of references to older online culture, like games and videos 🥰💖
everyone, please do go watch The Amazing Digital Circus pilot and support them if you can. they deserve to be funded to create even more wonderful episodes!! and i'd love to hear people's thoughts on this. were there any references you spotted? 👀

Call me crazy, but, I don’t think its fair to Izzy or to the audience for Izzy to have only the options of: 1. Dying or 2. Living but suffering.
If you think Stede is capable of redemption for the horrible way he treated his family, his crew, people not on his crew, and Edward.
If you think Edward is capable of redemption for the horrible things he’s done to Stede’s crew, Izzy (I don’t care if you think he deserved it or wanted it, its still a horrible thing to do to someone), his lack of care for his own crew, and the things he’s going to wind up doing in season 2.
If you think everyone else’s propensity for murder and maiming and torture and, yes, just being a dick is excusable.
But you, for some reason, cannot see a way forward for Izzy that doesn’t involve death or perpetual suffering? I don’t understand you, I don’t trust you. You are no better than a cop, if we’re being entirely honest. We don’t like cops around here.
I genuinely resent the claim of ‘Izzy has internalized homophobia’ (I think its much more nuanced than that) but if you’re going to go for that angle, are you honestly going to tell me that you believe people who are oppressed deserve to suffer because they have a complicated relationship with their own oppression and how they deal with said oppression?
I’m not going to approach the claims of ‘Izzy is racist’ because, frankly I’m not a person with authority to speak on that, I’ll simply say ‘I disagree’ and direct you to people who do have authority to speak on it, who refute the idea (some being the writers themselves). I will also say ‘Why are Stede and Pete, who have actually been called racist by a BIPOC/indigenous person in the text, extended a grace where Izzy is not?’
I genuinely don’t think the show is going to go in that direction, I agree with Con in that ‘the show is kind’ and I think that it would be cruel to point to a character that is already suffering and say ‘none of the rest of these people who are suffering deserve to be but this one does and he should be punished because he wasn’t nice like the rest of them’. (Ignoring the fact that none of the rest of them are actually all that nice, they can be, because they care about each other but if you’re only nice to people you care about then you’re not actually nice) If the show does go in that direction though, I will be genuinely disappointed, disheartened and, to be entirely honest? Hurt.
No, not because it’s Izzy specifically. It’s more than just the one character, its about the message that sends. ‘If you are not the ideal oppressed person you don’t deserve a happy ending’. That’s the message it sends. Its a shitty message.

Cute lunches for my Cute husband: Lan Wangji
had the cutest headcanon of post-canon wangxian: Wei Wuxian takes the juniors out for night-hunts everyday. He often eats lunch, or dinner, or sometimes both outside with them. This bothers Lan Wangjj. Excessive food eaten outside isn't good.
It starts really simple. Lan Wangji takes a pretty little tiffin, and peels a pomegranate and adds a cute, little silver spoon in it. When Wei Ying is to leave for his newest "cram" class, Lan Wangji hands him the tiffin.
"What is this?" Wei Ying asks, taking the tiffin in a pretty qiankun bag.
"For you." Lan Wangji replies, but doesn't elaborate. He kisses him and Wei Ying is off on his way.
When he opens the tiffin later that afternoon, he sees the pomegranate and the silver spoon; something in his heart moves.
The juniors cannot comprehend what they say. When they return later, Jingyi runs up to Lan Wangji.
"Hanguang-jun, did you hand Senior Wei that tiffin?"
"Mn."
Jingyi shares a look with another junior, "Makes perfect sense now."
"What's the matter?"
"When we gathered for a short rest, Senior Wei took out that tiffin, and he ate the pomegranate, little by little, without making the slightest of sounds." Jingyi says, "Senior Wei ate for over half an hour and didn't say a single word. We were so worried."
"After he ate," another junior continues, "he thanked the heavens for giving him you. It was so strange..."
"We thought he was cursed!"
"But he was just in love, haha."
"Hanguang-jun is a very doting husband."
Lan Wangji smiles, walking back to the Jingshi, a cookbook under his arm.
-
The next day, Lan Wangji gives him different sorts of snacks. The day after, the night hunt is supposed to last longer, so he packs him a whole hunan-based meal. In the following week, he goes to Caiyi and personally selects a rabbit embossed, cute tiffin with a cuter spoon. A fortnight later, he wraps the tiffin up with an adorable ribbon.
Fifteen days later, during their quiet dinner in the Jingshi, Wei Wuxian finally cries and they talk about it.
"It's just - I spent a great part of my first life starving. Or hungry. Or struggling with food." Wei Ying says, "I never had the habit of regular, timely meals ingrained in me."
"Mn."
"And... it's just. It's like. You cook for me in Cloud Recesses. For dinner. We eat together. That is one thing." He says, "But even when I go out, away from this place - to which my prime connection is you - even then, you hand me food. I've learnt that homes are places which have hearths and food. But even when I'm away, I'm never... actually, away from home. There is no fear that I am ever, too far away."
"Mn," Lan Zhan agrees, "Wei Ying is home."
"That's... like, that's. Lan Zhan. You - you are too good. You know? At this point you'll never get rid of me."
Lan Zhan smiles, "Good."
---
"You know, whenever I eat those lunches of yours, I eat it quietly. I think of how you must have made it for me, with every little detail. You must have been thinking of me, of what I like." Wei Ying says, "You love me so much. Sometimes, I worry whether my ways of loving are enough. I eat slowly, savoring each bite, thinking of my Lan Zhan going through all the effort just to keep me well-fed. Packing my chilli oil in one little compartment, adding extra sweets, more of all I like and less of all I do not. How can you be so perfect, hm?"
"Wei Ying's love is enough," Lan Zhan says, instead, "Cooking a lunch is a very small thing. It's been fifteen days. Wei Ying often skips meals during night-hunts or eats too fast. Yet, the juniors told me Wei Ying called a break, ate slowly, and thanked the skies for me, even today. Wei Ying adds meaning to my love for him by accepting it so gratefully, everyday."
