December 11th 2004 saw death at the age of 101 of Margaret Fay Shaw.
Many Americans come to our shores, some looking for their ancestral roots, others just to explore our beautiful lands and take in our culture, few leave a mark like Margaret Fay Shaw did. Even her birthplace near Pittsburgh, Glenshaw, lends itself to the Scottish lands she fell in love with and devoted her life.
Shaw was one of the most notable collectors of authentic Scottish Gaelic song and traditions in the 20th century. The arrival of this young American on the island of South Uist in 1929 was the start of a deep and highly productive love affair with the language and traditions of the Gaels. She was also an outstanding photographer, and both her still pictures and cinematography contributed to an invaluable archive of island life in the 1930s.
She met the folklorist John Lorne Campbell on South Uist in 1934; they married a year later and together helped to rescue vast quantities of oral tradition from oblivion.
Her most important published work was Folksongs And Folklore Of South Uist, which has never been out of print since it was first published in full by Routledge and Kegan Paul in 1955.
As well as the collection of Gaelic works, John Lorne Campbell and Margaret Fay Shaw bought the Hebridean island of Canna, where they spent rest of their lives, after which they bequeathed it to the National Trust of Scotland.

Poignant images of the recent re-burial of 14 Revolutionary War bodies discovered at Camden, including one redcoat highlander. Members of the present-day Royal Regiment of Scotland were in attendance along with the reenactors. Research is currently being conducted to find any living relatives of the deceased. is MDR1 but it always shocks me when people say BCs weren't bred for sheepdog trials when that's like.. a huge part of the BC's history, that they were the selection of the regional working sheepdogs "collies" that people competed with and literally developed sheepdog trials for the og sporter dogs but also yeah mdr1 isn't really.. in BCs, like it's so quoted as MUST TEST FOR IT! and there's been one case i've heard of with it, and the dog wasn't even confirmed to have it through dna testing, just that's what the owner said it died from.

trying not to think about how the domination of an increasingly internet-based and therefore undifferentiated anglosphere media surely incentivises presenting whatever view of a certain nation’s politics will play best in America, and if the country is Anglosphere itself this will in turn actually affect the politics there bc of how media Does That

I would absoloutely LOVE to read a story of yours based around brigid showing up in America on a coffin ship. As someone from Ireland, a lot of people don't actually know the history and it makes my heart so so big hearing it even mentioned :')
I don't know if I'll ever do the coffin ships specifically but I have a lot of thoughts about Brighid and the diaspora in America and Australia especially but also Canada, Argentina and Chile. One of the handful of times I've heard Irish Gaelic in public it was from an Argentinian, it was glorious. Sorry, braincells playing pingpong today uhhh where was I oh! Yes. So if you kind of scratch that surface of American consumerism and the whole phenomenon of plastic paddies and yanks ordering car bombs in pubs you might be surprised! There's a real appreciation for the history and culture and music under there, I swear. I'm not Irish-American but I was born in Boston and we're the worst about this, I swear to god, but there is a really rich vein of history and appreciation in there somewhere.
Anyway, all of that to say I will likely write a story about if not the coffin ships themselves, then at least some of Brighid's life and relationships that resulted from the circumstances. Coffin ships, fever sheds, the Irish Brigade, the Fenian raids, the music, the food, the holiday, the legacy of the Celtic Church in the Catholic church of America and Australia. There's a lot of material in there.

On April 21st 1838, the naturalist John Muir was born.
Born in Dunbar, East Lothian, his parents were Daniel Muir and Ann Gilrye. He was the third of eight children: Margaret, Sarah, David, Daniel, Ann and Mary (twins), and the American-born Joanna. His earliest recollections were of taking short walks with his grandfather when he was three.
In his autobiography, he described his boyhood pursuits, which included fighting, either by re-enacting romantic battles from the Wars of Scottish Independence or just scrapping on the playground, and hunting for birds' nests As a child, he was raised under a strictly religious upbringing.
John Muir was a naturalist, conservationist, explorer, and writer. At age 11, his family immigrated to the United States from Scotland and settled in Wisconsin. Muir learned to love the wilderness at an early age and even carved working locks out of wood. At age 21, he entered the University of Wisconsin, but left after three years. After suffering an eye injury while working in Indiana, Muir resolved to work in the wilderness.
In 1868, after roaming the North American continent, he landed in San Francisco. Muir explored California and was awestruck by its natural beauty. He soon became a successful writer, describing the landscapes and detailing the devastation of alpine meadows and forests by grazing sheep and cattle.
As a result of his efforts, Congress established Yosemite National Park in 1890. Muir was also involved in the creations of Sequoia, Mount Rainier and Petrified Forest National Parks. To protect the parks from poachers and land prospectors, Muir, and his supporters, formed the Sierra Club in 1892. He served as its president until his death in 1914.
Find out more about John Muir on a web site dedicated to hime, including a 20 minute documentary. https://johnmuir.org/

Oh My God there's so many split between 'this sounds gross', 'this pisses me, an insane etymologist enthusiast, off'
SOUNDS GROSS: bennifer (like the fucking celeb portmanteau??), gaemon (ugliest targ name. naming my baby gayman), aenys (bruh.), dake (.bruh), hobber (mina tyrell why did u name ur kid this.), gargon (sounds like when my 10yo brother tries to do a dragon deez nuts across your face joke), garse(ok this one and hobber are supposed to sound gross but cmon bro)
PISSES ME OFF EYTYMOLOGICALLY: patricia, henrietta, isembard, christian-derived names like josua, criston, joseth. he has a bunch of surnames (usually scottish) used as names which is a common practice in the USA but sounds weird in a medieval setting eg cameron, kyle, qarlton
FRAT GUY QUICK ROUND (names that i dont necessarily hate but make me go lmao thats a westerosi frat guy): bradamar, braxton, addison, ambrode, chett, gareth, harys, josua, joseth, kevan, kyle (so many kyles omg), malentine, raylon ok ill stop there its no longer a quick roung
thats just off the top of my head plus quick browse of The Spreadsheet im sure theres more i have opinions on!

My French mother who was adopted by an American Navy officer who ended up with PTSD from the Vietnam war, and grew up on American military bases around the world, who would end up marrying one American man and another after that–the second of whom was extremely liberal for Indiana, raised three children in America over the course of like thirty years–one of whom was severely sick and disabled and then came out as queer at age eleven, then moved to the U.K. on her French passport before Brexit,
Ended up being an English monarchy-loving centrist who was of the opinion that neo-Nazis had the same right to free-speech as everyone else, and it took my making her cry by pointing out after a Pride event was confronted by armed neo-Nazis that the Nazis wanted and still want people like me (and other communities as well) dead and eradicated before she finally got over that last opinion

The language switches I do are hilarious to me because-as a native English speaker-my ENTIRE pitch changes. Here is how I sound speaking different languages:
Japanese: Slightly higher and almost bouncy, like a caffeinated squirrel combined with an 11 year old sticky iPad boy who just got a Fortnite pack.
Russian: 65-year-old male chain smoker who won’t stop talking about that one time his friend shot him in the hand “by accident”
Scots Gaelic: Like me but…classier? Slightly deeper than normal pitch.
French: Deeper voice, almost like a man who tastes wine and smells cheese before it’s shipped to aristocrats around the world for a living.
Navajo: Me but more bouncy with more fluctuation.
NOTE: these are MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCES. I am in NO WAY an expert or native speaker of these languages, and I do not believe that everyone who speaks these languages sounds the same or experiences them the way I do (no shit bc I only really fluently speak “Yee Yee” American (not that there’s anything wrong with that))
