A few weeks before the wedding, David and Patrick are both feeling bogged down by the details. The list is long and they are stressed.

On a day off from the store, Patrick suggests they go to town hall and sign the marriage license. They expect it to be sort of… perfunctory. Another item checked off the list. But it’s actually sweet and tender and it feels bigger than that. They’re legally married now.

Some of you may recognize the storyline that this comes from.

Patrick grins at her in that way that she knows will drive someone crazy one day. But for now, it just makes her actually crazy.

“Fine.” She grabs the remote and mutes the tv. “So, I’m meeting my new partner today. He just got to town, and Ronnie wants me to meet him at the rink, just to see if it’s going to be a good match. We’ll start training on the weekend.”

“Stevie!” he gasps, stupid eyes, big and round. “I didn’t know you were thinking about going back to pairs ice dance. After Emir, I thought you’d sworn off dancing with a partner.”

Because with the nerves comes no doubt, not even for a second, that right here, right now — this is where he's supposed to be. This is right. He's about to marry David. He's about to marry the love of his life.

There's a knock on the door. His father pokes his head in. "Ready, son?"

"I'm ready."

Patrick is recently un-engaged, a bachelor looking for adventure and a change. He receives a letter from a cousin who had moved to the West Coast the previous year, and decides to take his chances and follow suit.

He is smart and capable, but completely unprepared for the [formerly] wealthy family in his wagon train.
