Swirling Sea Ice
The Sea of Okhotsk is the northern hemisphere's southernmost sea that seasonally freezes. Caught between the Siberian coast and the Kamchatka Peninsula, cold air from Siberia helps freeze water kept at lower salinity due to freshwater run-off. (Image credit: W. Liang; via NASA Earth Observatory)

Satellite-based passive microwave images of the sea ice have provided a reliable tool for continuously monitoring changes in the Arctic ice since 1979. Every summer the Arctic ice cap melts down to what scientists call its "minimum" before colder weather begins to cause ice cover to increase. This graph displays the area of the minimum sea ice coverage each year from 1979 through 2018. In 2018, the Arctic minimum sea ice covered an area of 4.15 million square kilometers. This visualization shows the expanse of the annual minimum Arctic sea ice for each year from 1979 through 2018 as derived from passive microwave data. A graph overlay shows the area in million square kilometers for each year's minimum day. The date shown in the upper right corner indicates the current year being displayed. . A massive bloom of cyanobacteria is visible in the Baltic Sea. This Overview was featured in latest feature about cruise ships - link in bio to see the full story. This area receives roughly 300 cruise ships each year and wastewater dumped by ships contains nitrogen and phosphorous that has been proven to feed these blooms. Large blooms can cause an oxygen-depleted dead zone where other organisms cannot survive. . #Repost @europeanspaceagency 18 years old and rocking‼️ 🌏🛰 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our oldest operational Earth observation mission, Proba-1, captured this unusual image of plentiful parked airliners at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, usually the busiest airport in India, on 7 May 2020. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The cubic-metre-sized satellite has been in orbit for more than 18 years. It left Earth from India: Proba-1 was launched from the country’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre by Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle on 22 October 2001. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The first in our family of ‘Project for On-Board Autonomy’ missions, Proba-1 began life as a technology demonstration satellite, subsequently becoming an Earth observation mission. Its main hyperspectral Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer is accompanied by the monochromatic High Resolution Camera, which took the 5-m spatial resolution image shown here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Overseen from our centre in Belgium, the highly-automated Proba-1 introduced various then-novel but now mainstream technologies to space, including lithium ion batteries, gallium arsenide solar panels, the use of startrackers for gyro-free attitude control and ESA-developed ERC-32 microprocessors running its flight computer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Proba-1 continues to deliver imagery to scientific teams around the globe, while also providing useful data on the longevity of space systems and components. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📸 @europeanspaceagency ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #ESA #EuropeanSpaceAgency #EarthFromSpace #India #NewDelhi #IndiraGandhiInternationalAirport #Airport #AirportLife #Covid19 #Proba1 #SatelliteImage #BlackAndWhite #Airplane #Tech #Technology #Earth #SolarSystem #Veteran #EarthObservation (at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAfxmydDekL/?igshid=qdinusz0nht7
