For the ask game... 37, canglan

So I was going to write canonverse, but then @crisdrawsandcries posted figure skating AU art, so I wrote the beginning of figure skating AU. There is no actual dancing in this, but there will be eventually of course. Also I'm used to writing for THE figure skating anime fandom where I did assume a level of knowledge, so if any of this is confusing, I apologize. I'll probably add some footnotes.

It’s not that Lanhua was a bad skater. Objectively, you could not be someone competing at the elite level without being a good skater. There were thousands of athletes that did not manage to reach the heights that she had.

But, he remembered the one year, when they were both younger, that she had managed to reach the Junior Grand Prix Final, and he did catch her free program. She was older for a skater competing in the junior division; eighteen and soon to turn nineteen, and she had finished in last place with a disastrous short program. Her free skate was gutsy and mostly clean, and she climbed up to fifth, but whoever coached her jump technique should have been banned from the sport forever. She had one of the worst hammer toes he had ever seen. She slowed down and came to almost a complete stop before she jumped. Her flip edge was abysmal. 

Dongfang Qingcang did not usually pay attention to other skaters. They were irrelevant to his goals. The athletes in his own discipline could not beat him, let alone those in others. But he did remember that Lanhua had been loved. Her skating skills were immaculate, her spins breathtaking, and her musicality was second to none. And she was cute, apparently. She had a bright, slightly silly personality that appealed to fans. Not that he was paying attention, but he did recall her almost falling on her face on the way to the Kiss and Cry after that free skate. People found that charming, supposedly. 

Musicality, grace, emotional expression, were all things that fans loved. “Bare your soul on the ice” or some such. Changheng skated like that, and for that he was maybe, more popular a skater than Dongfang Qingcang was. But the results did not favor him. Perhaps if he spent more time cleaning up his quad lutz than he did working with modern dance troupes, he could actually win a few gold medals to go along with his endless collection of silver. 

Because none of that alone brought results. Changheng’s fangirls did not decide whose name would be etched in the history of the sport. The victories were not his, the world records were not his. 

 Lanhua vanished from international competitions only a year or so after that Junior Grand Prix Final. She’d been forced by age to move up to the senior level, and she couldn’t hold her own there, quickly overshadowed and outscored by several other skaters from her federation. It was the fate of so many young skaters. Dongfang Qingcang’s younger brother had been one of them. Though perhaps Xunfeng could have gone further in the sport if— never mind. 

His father had always told him to focus on only himself. The enemy was nothing more than a distraction, and who they were was irrelevant. On the ice there was only him, and in competition, the only skater that mattered was him. He stood atop a podium so high above the other men he skated against, that they were not worth breaking his concentration for. He was the prodigy. He was the son of his father’s dreams. There was nothing that could break him if he merely did what his father told him. Skated like his father told him. Ate like his father told him. Lived like his father told him. Dressed like his father told him. Practiced until his father told him to stop. 

His father was wrong. He had always been wrong.

I don't have a presentable snippet for this one, but it's basically a canon-divergence where XLH sets her face and never lets her true identity slip to DFQC. She goes through with marrying Changheng and goes to fight Tai Sui, but at the last minute, DFQC realizes that the Xishan Goddess is going to exhaust her primordial spirit, and goes to help her. Glazefire appears in the process.

So between the two of them, Tai Sui is defeated and both of them live. But a weakened DFQC (who still doesn't know Xiyun is XLH) falls into Shuiyuntian's hands and Xiao Lanhua is well and good tied to Changheng. It starts with Xiao Lanhua waking up after her wedding day/fighting Tai Sui day.

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?

ooh tbh I'm not sure. The obvious answer is Assassin's Creed since it's been uh. 16 (?) years of making fanart and fanfic for it and loving the (first four) games but I also have just literally never been involved in the fandom as a community so I'm not sure that counts. As far as like...active involvement in the fandom community, I think it would be between Voltron and MDZS and both stand at about 3 years. oh wait I forgot Marvel LMFAO yeah Stucky had me in a vice grip for like. 5-7 years

Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?

9) What interesting canon knowledge did you discover that you didn't know before?

This is more what I discovered about the real world referenced in LBFaD, but…cinnabar is a mineral and NOT a spice 🤣

An actual canon detail: the execution room where Xunfeng took the lightning strikes and where XLH confronted DFQC when he was pretending not to love her is a different room from the throne room. Or at least the decor and everything else changes drastically.

20) What's something you learned about yourself while writing for LBFaD?

I had a different answer earlier, but I also learned a lot about my own writing process for longer stories: for example, that even if I outline parts ahead of time, I’ll want to rethink my outline by the time I’m writing the part. It’s still helpful to lay down the overarching outline ahead of time though, even if I make drastic changes to it later.

Early Grey Tea : The inevitable Zombie Apocalypse is upon us! What’s your plan of action?

I would do very very badly in a zombie apocalypse I think. But my plan would be something like 1) run (attach myself to someone with a car), 2) get some kind of mobile radio so I can keep up with developments and communicate, and 3) find out what kind of zombie apocalypse it is and arm myself accordingly. I'd probably start out with fire as a weapon and go from there. Ultimately I would either be aiming to get to an island (hopefully they can't swim) or survive until someone figures out a cure. That being said, if the zombies aren't attacking and are instead just kind of...returning and hanging out creepily, maybe I would try to help build a society where we can coexist??

Italian Soda : Describe your dream date

Okay this doesn't say first date and I don't think my dream date could ever be a first date anyway, so assume this is like date 2 or onwards or that I already know the person. I think it would be fun to go out and get breakfast/brunch (yes I am that person, I love breakfast okay) and then spend the afternoon doing some kind of activity like going to a bookshop/library or plant nursery or doing a craft like those paint your own ceramics places. Then we can end the day with an afternoon tea/coffee break and if it's going really well and we want to continue hanging out, maybe getting take out and going home for dinner and watching something.

The crowns

OK, you got me. Here we go. Dongfang Qingcang's headgear. In episodes 2 and 3 he wears a very large, gold crown with a complicated shape that matches the armour and looks like tree roots.

The texture of the gown worn under this is rather gorgeous. (Obviosuly, none of what we call "armour" in this show is supposed to look at all like physical protective gear, and he doesn't usually bother with it just for fighting, so I just assume that its primary function is ceremonial, but I also like the idea that it acts as some sort of conductor for magic shrapnel flying around on a magic battlefield, like a Faraday cage or something. You know what, I'm going to call this the Faraday Crown because we'll see it again).

When he realises he's going to have to get down to the much more difficult business of having arguments with Xiao Lanhua, he changes into something more comfortable which includes this very modest little hair-clip-style tiara. He partially wins this argument:

He continues to wear this one with all three black-and-gold outfits right through the duelling and drama:

... as well as being baffled in boats, twice, and being back, at the start of episode 10 ...

... Except when he is wearing the hunting dress, which has its own slightly more elaborate headpiece with a stalk that sticks up.

In passing, let me point out how much of this show works because Wang Hedi's face is intrinsically hilarious. But anyway, I'm pretty sure he wears this same one with the honey-coloured gown.

So that puts this medium-sized, somewhat plain, but in my opinion rather elegant headpiece with the two outfits in which the character looks and feels most comfortable and 'at home': whether because he's doing something he feels comfortable with, like forest shenanigans, barbecuing fish, or burning down the hall at Haishi (the hunting dress), or because it's the calm before the storm (the honey gown).

As things start to go haywire, his outfits get more magnificent and he wears what sassybluee has pointed out is the Berry Crown, an extremely pretty asymmetrical tiara with little touches of blue, like berries:

He wears this with the Chrysalis Gown and with the Fire Gown, through the process of transformation.

In later episodes, as he's under increasing pressure, his look goes right through magnificent into downright ugly. This outfit in epiosde 28 is just awful:

It does make sense if you think he's trying to increase his physical authority by looking heavier around the waist, but it doesn't work. The honey-coloured gown does a much better job of that, just by looking soft and comfortable and incidentally very sexy.

But wait - is this the same crown he was wearing with his armour in episode 2? I think it is.

And immediately after this, in the next scene, and without any explanation, we see that he's taken it off - to have an argument with Xiao Lanhua. This is the second time he has taken this specific crown off to do that specific thing, and this time it leaves him, shockingly, bareheaded:

Which we know he never is, except when sleeping, or playing sick for attention, or in so much pain that the Berry Crown symbolically fell off and we got the shot of it on the floor, above.

He loses the argument. It's very real.

To wrestle with Taisui for the first time and to fight Shiyuntian in episode 31, he is back in full battle dress, with the Faraday crown (and the same belt, which makes so much more visual sense with the armour):

In episode 33, however, the transformation is truly complete, and he wears this mourning tiara, which looks carved from unpolished jet, and points downwards, not up. I don't think we've see it before:

Then, he puts the Faraday Crown on again for the final battle, which is obviously worth the extra ceremony. It would be impractical to show him actually putting it on, of course, because this isn't the right moment for that level of visual implausibility, but his having just done so is implied in this very touching scene:

It disappears, however, during the battle, and he is bareheaded again:

And for their joint victory, bareheaded and wearing a very plain black robe (but still with an interesting subtle damask pattern to it)

For being back the second time around, he resumes the rather modest little tiara he wore in episodes 3 to 10 at Arbiter Hall, and for being back the first time. I was a bit thrown by this outfit choice on the first watch, but on reflection I think it's probably the correct degree of ceremony for snogging your goddess:

So I think we are to accept that these things are to differing degrees disguises, but never wholly a disguise.

Nevertheless, here is The Evil Penguin Disguised As A Chicken, because it makes the point about headgear better than anything ever did, and if you are too young to get this joke, you should definitely watch The Wrong Trousers. It's only about 20 minutes long.
