Turn Week 2022: Loyalist or Patriot?
Dear Mr. Culper,
I have chosen to deliver the newest intelligence you must give to 725 in a unique manner, though I am sure you will have no trouble decoding it yourself. Your education proves so. The 72 have a great love of music, which I hear frequently in 726’s residence, and though I am not interested in the arts myself, I have complied a musical cipher concerning each member of the ring— you, myself, 725, 721, and 355. If 721 finds any fault with my methods, tell him we must be as clever as we can. You never know when the tide in 727 will turn on you.
Your obedient servant,
Samuel Culper, Jr.

When Rebekah had asked Ben if anything was needed on her trip into the city, she'd meant milk, eggs, fabric, leather, any sort of goods that would benefit the camp, not a damned courier job in Caleb's stead. Of course, then he'd used that firm, forceful, commanding tone that secretly made her weak and she'd reluctantly agreed, wishing she could smack that triumphant look off his ridiculously infuriating pretty boy face.
Now, apparently, her fashion statement had literally knocked the designated contact for a loop. Agent 723, or Samuel Culper Jr., unknown by any other name in accordance with his wishes, looked at her as if she were wearing a codfish for a hat. She was in no mood for this.
"Do you take issue with my trousers, sir? I believe we have more important matters to discuss than my wardrobe choice, wouldn't you agree?"

So I am yet again avoiding real-world responsibilities in favor of trying to find out more about the Culpers. I found some letters in the library of congress awhile back so I’m actually going over them now.
Abe’s handwriting is just totally illegible. Maybe it’s because I’m not accustomed to reading 18th-century letters with my 21rst century eyes and I’m completely out of practice, but I can’t read a word. I managed to get through one that was just about him traveling to New York soon that was like half a page. He signs Samuel Culper like this:

I’ve moved on to reading Robert’s letters because I’m praying he has better handwriting. He does, some of them are just faded to the point where I can’t make them out. He also writes “sir” in the most extra way possible:

I love these dudes, okay, they’re great.

Robert Townsend’s Counterfeiting Plot Discovery:
Who is Robert Townsend?       In short, Robert Townsend was a significant member of the Culper Spy Ring during the American Revolution. He lived in Oyster Bay, New York which was heavily occupied by British officers at the time. He worked as a merchant and was solely dedicated to making a good living for himself. He became a spy in June, 1777 and other common aliases associated with Townsend are also “Samuel Culper Jr,” and “723.”
Townsend’s Most Memorable Discovery      In the late 1770s, the British constructed a plot to flood the American economy with fraudulent money. They were planning to print loads of fake dollars, get them to circulate through the economy, and cause severe inflation. In addition, Townsend learned that the British had found "several reams [large quantities] of paper made for the last emission struck by Congress." Meaning, the counterfeit money would be made with the same product as the official money, thus making the distinction between the real and the fake impossible. If the British arrangement worked, the American financial system would’ve been so fractured, the war would’ve been surely over.       Early 1780, Robert Townsend picked up on the British plan. It is unknown how or where he picked up the plot. However, knowing Townsend was a merchant and lived among British soldiers, it can be assumed he heard the counterfeiting arrangement while trading commodities with an officer. He sent a dispatch to the higher ups in the Continental Army and the news reached Congress. As a result of Townsend’s discovery, Congress recollected all of its bills in circulation (which was a major deal and probably a pain to do) and saved the war effort.       This piece of information Townsend found has been deemed one of the most memorable and important discoveries of the Culper Spy Ring.

This Day in History: Agent 355
On or around this day in 1780, a female agent in one of Washington’s spy rings may have been arrested. Can you believe that this woman was so good at hiding her identity that we still do not know who she was!? We can mostly just guess at what happened to her.
The mystery lady, a.k.a. Agent 355, was a member of the Culper Spy Ring, which operated in the New York area under the supervision of Benjamin Tallmadge. Other members included Abraham Woodhull (a.k.a. Samuel Culper, Sr.) and Robert Townsend (a.k.a. Samuel Culper, Jr.). They used business or family relationships in the area as cover for their activities.
The system used by the spy ring was perhaps a bit sophisticated for that time.
As Townsend collected information, he encoded it using a system of number sets that had been created by Tallmadge. These sets assigned numbers to 763 commonly used words, places, and people. If a word was needed outside of this set, then a mixed up alphabet was used to create it. Once created, the coded message was written in invisible ink, but a regular, mundane letter would be written on the same page, thus hiding the contents of any given secret message.
The story continues at the link in the comments.
