turn week 2022 | favorite female character | anna strong
"I have no home, no husband, no man to love or to love me, no reason to stay in this place I've known all my life. I can at least tell myself that I've saved a decent man from being the next casualty of your mission, though at the cost of his hope and happiness. You drove me to befriend him, Abraham. And when I did, you made me pay for it. And for that, I'm not sure I can ever forgive you."

Turn: Washington’s Spies Characters as songs from Midnights
I was inspired by this post and upon making my Ben Tallmadge playlist on Spotify, I started listening to Midnights by Taylor Swift again and a few characters came into my mind when listening so, here it is!
This is just for fun, I know some lyrics may not match with the characters but I based it off more on vibes than literally.
Anti-Hero: Abraham Woodhull
This song is 100% Abe! He’s turned into quite the anti-hero to me. I’m three seasons in so far and he’s come a long way from just being a quiet cabbage farmer. He’s killed an English officer, cheated on his wife, set up Robert Townsend’s dad’s attack... Abe is our anti-hero for sure <3
Midnight Rain/Maroon/Glitch: Anna Strong
UGH. MY FRICKEN GIRL. I love Anna so much: she’s fearless, compassionate and strong all in one. I felt Midnight Rain was a good fit because she truly goes by the beat of her own drum, no matter what it could mean for someone else. She jumps off the boat for the cause and for Abe, she only wanted to marry Hewlitt to protect him... she’s much deeper than what people think she is throughout the show. I love it. Maroon because this reminded me of her and Abe’s relationship. I love them together but it is wrong because you have to account for Mary (although I know it doesn’t have anything to do with her) but I think at some point Anna realizes how toxic it was and how it didn’t serve it. I find myself feeling bad for Anna a lot because she really doesn’t have anyone in Setauket. I was happy to see her find a home at the rebel camp with Ben and Caleb. Glitch is the more happier version of Abe and her’s relationship.
Bejeweled: Peggy Shippen
Another one of my favorite characters. Peggy got herself into trouble but I was rooting for her and Andre until the end, and especially when she was forced to marry Arnold, I wanted my girl to be safe! This song just screams confidence and self-assurance, which is what I think of when I think of Peggy.
Karma: Caleb Brewster
Caleb is so fun and so is this song. I love how he doesn’t take things too seriously, even if his own life is in danger. Karma I think has always worked out in his favor and he knows he’ll avenge the people that need avenging.
Vigilante Shit: Mary Woodhull
Mary REALLY SHOCKED ME ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. Some of her actions come out of nowhere but at the most important times. When she immediately came up with a plan to cover Mr. Baker’s death to when she tries to kill Simcoe herself. SHE IS A BAD BITCH. And I grew to love her. I think she uses the way people think so little of her (fragile, sweet woman) to her advantage. The lyrics “ladies always rise above, ladies know what people want, someone sweet and kind and fun, the lady simply had enough...” Don’t fuck with my girl Mary.
Lavender Haze: John Andre & Peggy Shippen
Their relationship was beautiful and tragic. Truly fucking tragic. I think the beginning of their relationship was a lot of fun and light-hearted, and so full of love, which is I think the “lavender haze” fade. It’s just John and Peggy: no judgmental people and the world watching. HONORABLE MENTION: Paris. In another world, John Andre escapes to Europe with Peggy and they live happily in Paris <3.
Mastermind: Ben Tallmadge and John Andre
I had to give this song to both of them! Our spymasters! Both men of honor. Both doing their jobs for country and for King.
The Great War/You’re On Your Own, Kid/Bigger than the Whole Sky: Ben Tallmadge
*Sighs.* Ben <3 I love him so much. I think The Great War makes a great Ben inspired fanfic song. I feel like Ben keeps a lot of his true feelings to himself; he’s not going to go any one person to vent about how he feels inside. He locks it up in a box, tucks it away, and throws out the key. He’s always at a crossroads about the war and sometimes himself; someone has to make the tough decisions and plans and it’s him. When Anna says “you ask too much of people.” That’s why I chose this song for him. You’re On Your Own, Kid is big Ben and George vibes. George is clearly someone Ben looks up to but there are moments (I think) Ben realizes his hero is flawed (just like everyone else, including him.) And I think in season 3 Ben starts to realize that this war isn’t so black and white. Which leads me into Bigger than the Whole Sky, I think this is a song for Ben and Sarah </3. The song by itself is truly so, so sad, but when you put it in context with what happened with Ben and Sarah... it will shred your heart. I’M SORRY!!!!
HONORABLE MENTION: Epiphany from folklore for Ben Tallmadge. This is the ULTIMATE Ben song for me.
Another honorable mention is This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things from reputation for George Washington and Benedict Arnold. This song speaks for itself, LOL.
Let me know if anyone here happens to love/watch Turn: Washington’s Spies AND loves Taylor’s music! Would love to hear other perspectives or maybe if you think a song belongs to someone else. <3
