can you make a list of your top indie horror game recs ::3

yeah! so these wont be in order of what i like the most, they're just going to be here in whatever order I think of them. i'm also trying to go with what I think are more lesser-known ones, and if one is more popular it'll because I think it's one people write off that are actually good. as i'm writing this i'm going back up to say the descriptions for these will become less detailed because i got tired and cant keep repeating the art!! the atmosphere!!

Scarlet Hollow: A heavily choice-based horror mystery visual novel about going back to Scarlet Hollow- a small town in south historically ran by your family- for the funeral of your late aunt. its episodic and there are currently only 4 of the 7 episodes out. even with just them it is my favorite game. I love the writing and the art and the whole atmosphere of the game AND the soundtrack brought Brandon Boone (the composer) into my top 5 artists in my spotify wrapped last year

Slay the Princess: Another choice-based horror visual novel (and dating sim!) by the creators of Scarlet Hollow where you are tasked with, well, slaying the princess to prevent the destruction of the entire world. It's only a demo right now-releasing q3 of this year- but I'm excited for the whole game! my selling point for it with my followers is that the narrator (and some other characters) are voiced by Jonny Sims and hey podcast fans you like him check out this game

Endacopia: A click and point horror game inspired by Humongous Entertainment games such as Pajama Sam. Currently also a demo and set to release in October of 2024, I can not emphasize enough how excited I am for it. The game's style is so fun and there's lots of little details and the music??? There's two musical numbers in the demo alone. Some of the style and writing also reminds me of Undertale and even Homestuck somewhat (I say as someone who hasn't read homestuck)

FAITH: The Unholy Trinity: This is an 8-bit style horror game inspired by the 1980s Satanic Scare coming in 3 chapters with multiple endings, a very good example of games not needing high-end realistic graphics to be scary

Doki Doki Literature Club: Glances at my icon. who could've seen this one coming. I feel like most people know about ddlc by now, even if they don't know anything past "horror anime dating sim". It starts off for a long while a seemingly normal, if bland, visual novel dating sim until-seemingly suddenly- twisting into psychological horror. There's, however, a lot of foreshadowing once you see the beginning again after knowing what will happen. Honestly I think this games brilliant and its such a shame it somehow got lumped in with "cringe" mascot horror (its not even a mascot horror game?). For me a lot of the horror comes from the amount of scares left up to a random percentage- and how subtle a lot of them are. You can replay it and have a fairly different experience than you did the first time- and be scared by completely new things. There's also this existential and cosmic horror element that is less one you experience while playing it, i think, and more thinking about it afterwards. This isn't even touching on a lot of the secrets and easter eggs. a few years after the original game came out, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus was released, and it leaves the og game experience essentially untouched while adding a new vn experience the length of the og game (thats seemingly horror-less) as well as some more lore to the world, not of the game, but around the game, and builds more on the existential/cosmic horror. Needless to say from the length of this, I adore this game. also take the content warnings seriously, in the (free) og the game opens with warnings and a link to a page with specific tws, and in ddlc+ you are given the options to see those warnings listed before starting the game, as well as the ability to turn on tw pop-ups before game events

Home Safety Hotline: Also currently a demo, a horror game where you work for a home safety hotline, answering calls to help people deal with pests and other household problems. as the game progresses you get some more... off-putting calls and access to more unusual problems. I love games that put you into the role of someone who works a mundane job dealing with horrifying shit (similar reasoning to why I like the I'm On Observation Duty games, which I think are more popular rn than I want to put on this list)

NiGHT SIGNAL: By the same creator of Home Safety Hotline, this one's a short one about getting a new tv set and finding some strange channels during the night, inspired by The Twilight Zone and a 1995 game, The Dark Eye. A lot of the art in the game is done with clay which creates this really nice uncanny look and atmosphere- details about which you can see in an artbook you unlock after playing the game, which is REALLY cool I adore seeing the creativity behind and what goes into games like these.

and there's a bunch more I like, these are just the ones off the top of my head and I also dont feel like typing a bunch more dfnafnsk I'll also say if yall haves one you really like that I havent mentioned feel free to send an ask talking about them

i’ve been reading your stuff since you wrote for davekat and had massive respect for you the whole way. i didn’t know what tlt was but i put it on my to read list bc of you and. jesus fucking christ man it’s so good. read all three books and now i’m like dreading/anticipating atn so hard.

THANK YOU 🥹 i cant believe im cool now. win for past SAM. im always glad to know that people like my davekat writing... its been years truly. i cant reread them without wanting to wince/rewrite it but when other people like it it still gives me that confidence with improvement, appreciation, two cakes, yanno. i will also take reading tlt as a victory i engorge myself on content of it. i dream of it sometimes the fact that its overtaken homestuck is definitely a symptom of illness here . but again tyvm this made me smile

While preparing to come back to this blog, I reread a lot of my old content to get myself back into regression content! Here’s a masterlist of my personal favourite things that I’ve written/made on this blog! I don’t often revisit art or moodboards, so it was a lot of fun to see them all again.

Fanfiction:

Only Heaven I’ll Be Sent To (Resident Evil, regressor!reader with cg!Lady Dimitrescu: some of the only action scenes I’ve written on this blog, so I had so much fun with it, and oh my gosh I love Lady Dimitrescu so much.)

Restrained (Death Note, secret regressor!Light and cg!L, ‘littles are known’ universe: I reread this one so often and I wish I had the energy for a sequel, I want to read more in this universe)

Little Brother, Big Brother (Homestuck, regressor!Dave and cg!Roxy, regressor!Dirk and cg!John: I wanted to really dive into some complex dynamics with these four and I feel like I did a good job, this fic feels very real to me in a way a lot of my other writing doesn’t.)

Something Wrong (BNHA, regressor!Katsuki: you can really tell this is a fic where I’m processing things, and it still gets to the heart of my complicated feelings about writing Katsuki and Izuku’s dynamic)

Home Sweet Home (Twilight, regressor!Cullens with cg!Esme and Carlisle: big regression families are my lifeblood and I love writing immortals regressing. This might be my favourite thing I’ve written.)

Evenings of Eternity (Good Omens, regressor!Crowley and cg!Aziraphale: I don’t write much for Good Omens but they’re such a pleasing pair to explore. Again, immortals regressing is a favourite of mine.)

Song of the Hive (Magnus Archives, regressor!Jane Prentiss: some of the only real horror writing I’ve done on this blog, and I love it very much. Hive/regression combination just works so well.)

Forever More (Phantom of the Opera, regressor!phantom and cg!Christine: I have many emotions about Erik being a regressor and this fic is a balm to all of them. Probably the fic I’ve reread the most.)

General Opinions on Movies me and my partner marathoned recently written before the melatonin wins

Planet of the Apes trilogy

LOVED THEM. SO MUCH. I care a lot about Caesar and Maurice so the end of the third movie really had me in tears. So good.

Jurassic World Movies

Pretty alright, docked some points because of real world opinions of Crisp Rat, but I am HERE for Blue and the T-Rex. The Indominus Rex was, imo, a really cool dino. Fed my childhood love of scaley boys.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

YES KING ITS WHAT HE DESERVES. So happy to see Kitty again and Harvey Guillén did a great job. 10/10 will watch again.

The Golden Compass

Lost to the mf ages. I had a preview for this movie on a dvd I had as a kid, and only now got to watch it. So sad there wasn't a sequel.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

YES. YES. YES. EVERYTHING I WANTED IT TO BE.

All of the Michael Bay Transformers movies

Ugh took us so long to get through cause each movie is a little over 2.5 hours but we made it! I watched the first one as a kid (as well as read some of the comics) and Ive always loved Bumblebee. I loved all of the movies. LOVED HOUND he was my childhood second favourite. Im a little sad that Arcee didn't get nearly as much of a part as she deserves but I'll live. I'm more partial towards Sam Witwicky but Cade Yeager is alright. Hes cool.

Transformers: the Movie (1986)

Partner's childhood favourite so naturally we had to. Was really good! Reminded me of why I love 80's cartoons so much, it was a huge nostalgia trip and got me wanting to watch all of my childhood shows and movies (X-Men, TMNT '87, Rainbow Brite, etc.). I will always love the style and the way they did the backgrounds. As for the movie itself, I got my fill of Arcee, and I'm happy with the experience. Will watch again.

Bayverse TMNT movies.

YES FINALLY. Ive had these on my watch list for. A WHILE. I loved them, loved Mikey and Donnie specifically. Not my favourite iteration of Casey but he was fine. Overall p good, happy to see Bebop and Rocksteady. I think they should've used '87 Krang's voice in the second movie but he's squeaky and kind of annoying so I get it. Reminds me to watch ROTTMNT.

Dinosaur

Literally didnt even know this was a Disney movie but was fantastic. Beautiful animation despite being old. Loved it.

Hook

*Points at Rufio* its him officer. Its the homestuck flashback. Despite the fact that I had to explain why Rufio cause me to uncontrollably laugh to my partner, was a really good movie. Hook and Peter were both played by amazing guys.

“A Good Man Goes to War”

Plot Description: it’s the battle of Demon’s Run, and River Song has something to tell the Doctor

The way Amy and Rory constantly get torn away from each other…

AND the way they keep trying to make us think Amy’s in love with the Doctor ALL THE FUCKING TIME

It’s exhausting

I’m sure these like…space station grunt workers will tie into the grander scheme at some point but I can’t bring myself to care about them…yet…?

Is this the Silurian woman who becomes a…not companion, but frequent ally of the Doctor? (The way my brain went through V names and tried to convince me her name was Vriska as if I’ve even read homestuck) it IS her because that’s Jenny. Jenny, right?? Yes.

Oh to be fighting with laser guns but dressed like you’re in Pride and Prejudice. That’s such a good way to stage a scene

Why DO they even attempt to keep River locked up? Or is it mostly self-imposed out of some sense of penance

Knowing what we eventually find out about River and hearing her tell Rory that it’s her birthday 😭

Ohhhh…the space station grunts are the underlings to the people who kidnapped Amy.

They really made the headless monks Sith Nazgûl huh?

I do like the interspecies lesbians

It’s interesting to think about this episode in contrast to The Pandorica Opens (if that was the first of the Pandorica episodes). We have a lot of the same elements, but now the Doctor has gathered a group of different alien species to do the attacking. It’s kind of no wonder the one grunt talks of him as a dark legend

The pirate crew??????? Hell yeah!

One, the Colonel Run Away speech is powerful but two, you being angry isn’t new, Doc. You can pretend you’re a silly little muppet man all you want but….no

Noooooo, after that really touching reunion I’D FORGOTTEN THAT THEY REPLACED MELODY TOO. THAT’S NOT THEIR REAL BABY

I can’t believe he’s putting a time limit on Amy and the Doctor hugging…..

That would be so unbelievably traumatizing. If your newborn child liquified in your arms.

No matter what it is that River says here, no matter how right she is, part of the reason she couldn’t come here til now was because she shouldn’t cross her own time stream

so what are your c!worsties duo headcanons?

alright alright

SO! their relationship is sort of split up into two major phases. the pre- and post-betrayal.

pre-betrayal they were friends, good friends actually! puffy was one of the first people she met on the server and gave her a tour [purpled did earlier but it was kinda shit so she offered lol] puffy also introduced her to the egg by taking her to it directly, although they made sure to get hazmat suits

after that they were friends! not super close but they hung out occasionally. then came the banquet. hannah, sam, foolish, and puffy all got together to plan to take them down. sam was suspicious of hannah bc of her previous entanglements with the egg but puffy had nothing but full trust, relying on previous encounters

im not actually sure if puffy knew the extent of what was happening between with hannah and the egg im going to have to rewatch the vods. i think its likely she knew but believed she got away just like puffy and sam had. which is a defining trait of puffy. shes very self-assured and struggles to change opinion / see she was wrong. so when she believed hannah was safe and trustworthy. she BELEIVED.

so when the betrayal happened it was absolutely crushing. in an instant she saw a close ally not only turn against them but also assist in the murder of her son.

[interesting note is that when hannah betrays her quote directly talks to puffy. she does say sam who shes arguably closer to or address everyone. though if im remembering correctly its bc right before she says that puffy says 'hannah how could you!' but im choosing to believe that she just felt bad <3]

so after that any semblance of a good relationship was just crushed into the ground. puffy actively distrusts bad and ant bc they were infected. but hannah who was not only infected AND betrayed her? its bitter and shes hurt and stubborn as hell. she shattered her trust and they can never come back from that

so for some headcannons [under the cut cause this is getting long lol]:

-puffy is the kind of person to find annoyance in everything she does. a 'look at that bitch over there. eating crackers..' type if you will

-hannah tried to explain that she had no choice bc she was literally dying and she does feel bad. puffy is stubborn and. not that she doesnt believe her but its like shed just keep insisting that she CHOSE to betray them [comparing hannahs experiences to her own though its not correct]

-hannah would not back down though and it would dissolve into a screaming match and now shes bitter and angry as well. thats where i think the 'you were the one who introduced me to the egg' thing would come from. yelled during a heated fight which would genuinely hurt puffys feelings and just lead to both being angrier

-they would avoid eachother as much as possible for a period before they begin acting very petty with eachother

-hannah had apologized to foolish and they had become friends again. which pissed puffy tf off

-they would probably do a malicious prank war [puffy leaving spiders in her house [hannah is deathly afraid of them] and hannah stealing / burning her items]

-puffy would probably start it and initially be much more passionate. then hannah fights back hard

-hannah i think would switch between disliking and wanting to annoy her to not caring [bc other issues have come up]

-after loosing her wings hannah would get burnt out by their rivalery and maybe even begin to blame herself which then she gets to have a #healing arc with tina

-after that theres two ways i can really see there relationship going

a. drift apart, hannah moves on and decides she doesnt need to stick in the past. because of the reciprocation puffy also moves on. they never talk anything out and their relationship fizzles out like that

b. hannahs having a breakdown and puffy feels bad and they have a little bit of a feelings jam. after which they change into being a kismesissitude. for those who never read homestuck its one of four of the alien romances. it essentially boils down to ppl who hate eachother so much that they makeout but dont actively harm / kill and theres some begruding respect. you can read more abt it HERE.

version a is more realistic imo bc i truly believe puffy is just too stubborn but also i think them being kismesis' and just annoying eachother [sort of similar to bad and foolish] is fun

so yea! thats basically how i view them rn of course ill probably develop things in the future

but essentially:

friends -> allies / trusted -> betrayal -> BIG fight -> period of bitter anger [possibly even true hatred] -> malicious enemies -> healing arc -> actual worsties

this is one is important as fuck i see so many people not understand this and it drives me crazy

"Sburb ruins, mythic challenges, and personal quests generally tend to come off as shallow busywork, stage props, or set pieces in a spurious Hero's Journey. Rose either faintly glimpses this truth at this early stage, or she's just hitting her rebellious teen stride. Either way, she doesn't take the surface value of the quest seriously at all, and only wants to smash it apart and loot the secrets. My sense is that the average reader reacts to this impulse unfavorably. Because readers watch the formula play out so often, they are trained heavily to respect the journey of the hero, to anticipate and crave its fulfillment, to see it as something verging on contractual in their relationship with a story. So a gut-response to this recklessness is like, "ROSE, NO! STOP THAT! You simply must complete your quest and play the rain!" What comes with this view is the feeling that her evolution as a character is only being delayed for a bit while she gets some anti-narrative foolishness out of her system, and then we'll get down to business and watch her do her quest, play a whole BUNCH of rain, and reap the narrative satisfaction. There's just one problem: she never does that. This candy-coated Kiddie Kwest is at no point ever taken seriously by Rose or the narrative itself, nor should it be.

When trying to parse character arcs, we look out for certain beacons. So when we hear "play the rain," we're like, ah, GOT IT. That's Rose's arc. Once she finally gets over this destructive teen bullshit, she can wise up, play the rain, and her arc will be finished. Wrong. This is almost a red herring arc. Her quest on this planet, its patronizing presentation, its intrinsic shallowness, is a mirage surrounding her that represents a fully regimented series of milestones for achievement and personal growth, much as society dubiously presents to young people in many forms. The true arc-within-the-arc is actually an upside-down version of what it appears to be. What Rose is doing now, which seems to be misguided recklessness taking her further away from the truth of herself, is actually better seen as a good start to her real journey: breaching the mirage of regimented growth, exposing it for the charade it is, and pulling the truth out of it. The real conflict in her arc comes not from the fact that she refuses to take it seriously, by destroying it and taking shortcuts. It's the opposite. It's that, upon trashing her planet, she continues to have this nagging sense that she should be taking this quest seriously, much like how a young adult may have a nagging sense of guilt that they aren't "being an adult right" by the time they approach adulthood. And this nagging, unanswerable guilt arises from the truth that the regimentation of adulthood is completely fake. It was always a mirage. Learning this, making peace with it, is part of the growing process for many, and it is for her too." -Andrew Hussie

I mean I guess them being a council/jury of some kind is what I expected from their first appearance (bc at that time they were basically TELLING clockwork to kill danny, not asking,, so I figured they had SOME kind of authority) but. there were so many. anyway, here goes vlad! letting his own hubris go brrrr. releasing a weather ghost for political gain! #justvladthings

Interesting point! Did you have a favourite Homestuck moment?

The first time I think I remember reading a Homestuck story – in HS2.0 or before that, but probably HS2.0 – involved Rose and Jade exploring Rose's mind in order to find Rose's true soul in the Rose Matrix, which was something I felt like I wanted to do at the time, in part because I had heard so much about how weird Rose's mind was and how much she had to hide from herself, and how much that stuff was a big part of the story.

I think the moment came in the comic where Rose and Jade met Caliborn, and Rose's mind was still in the process of dissolving. Rose and Jade were in some sort of spooky abandoned castle, and the room in which this moment occurred was this big expansive, empty space that had this sort of spooky vibe to it, and which had once been Caliborn's room. Jade's mind kind of collapsed down into Rose's mind for a moment, and this was a moment where both Jade and Rose seemed to lose their ability to maintain their own realities, almost as though Rose and Jade weren't "really there" and Caliborn was, and which was this big moment of the two worlds colliding, and the room becoming Caliborn's. I had a feeling that once I got some context from the next page, this was going to be like a big scene where Jade and Rose finally had to face up to what their powers were, and what they implied about reality, which was an angle I thought was interesting then. (As I found out later, it was a big theme in Homestuck.)

I was reading Homestuck at the time this all happened, and it felt like a real moment that I could connect to, especially because of that spooky vibe. It didn't feel like the sort of thing someone could make up or some sort of story device. This sort of thing happens in the real world. This sort of thing seemed like a natural thing for me to experience; it felt like this sort of moment of the two worlds finally meeting, was just a real part of what was going on.

It might be interesting, though, to give some other examples of real-world things that feel "like a story" but aren't, like the moment between Rose and Jade in Rose's Room. I don't think this is exactly the same thing, but it gives a good sense of what I'm talking about.

The moment in "The House on the Rock" song "When you come into the kitchen again, honey, can you bring me a knife?" where, by sheer coincidence, the knife she asked for shows up the moment she sees it in her hand, which is a sense of your expectations and desires colliding with actual reality

The moment in The Hobbit (to me) when Sam and Frodo both simultaneously see that the Ring has been destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom, because of course they see that. That moment, they both know, has always been there, and only now it's finally happened. It feels like a big narrative reveal, where both of these characters are like, "oh, I knew that was going to happen all along!" In some sense it feels like a fantasy and a nightmare all at the same time – this reality that was always there with me, but which only now is becoming my reality – and this moment of the two colliding makes me feel like I have experienced it, for the first time

And also when while i was watching antfrost pov thy were waiting n doing nothing which is great for them after all chaos is what thy wanted. Then they r " recognize" by the dream smp. Dream acted all high and mighty thinking tht no matter wut thy do itll be nothing bc he sees them like lmanburg when in reality the four of them are in sync, thy are clever, n observent thy dont cause as much conflict as the lmanburg.

Observations:

I use the opening lines of a story like most people use headlines; luring in the reader by making them think “Hold on, what’s going on?” and hoping it ignites strong enough curiosity for them to read further to figure it out. For that reason more often than not the opening lines are not exactly related to the story.

A surprising amount of mu openings also clearly say: “The story you know is over.”

Also very specific thing which is less about opening lines and more about the trope of my fics: A suspicious number of beginnings based on the fact that the person of focus is dead or implied to be, or implied to be really close to it.

I also don’t like long introductions to the story, so it’s either “Things are happening now, figure it out dear reader” or “This is a thing I am going to focus on because it’s my thing, deal with it, plot will come later.”

Favourite opening line is from The Wolves Breach Through, especially because it quickly evolves into a rant about langauges. The Night In Gale is a close second, because I love to take a piss on the source material. For this reason The Battlespire also comes close to the top, although the fic in itselfwas shit.

[1] Like A Teen Girl should get renamed, because the story evolved from “Parody of the Magic Highschool Girls premise” to “Drama With the Lads”, but I eh, who cares anyway, right?

[2] The Many Deaths of Me deserves to be rewritten by older and more experienced me. It could be a great fic.

[3] Probably going to get renamed to Original Real Feeling of Sharing, but only when I start the next story from the series.

1) Fenris and Hawke, Dragon Age 2

They’re just so Good for each other, I’m gonna cry: the support, the love, the found family. And also Fenris and Anders, because they’re so Bad for each other. I just have a lot of Fenris-related emotions, and a lot of emotion for how nuanced the intersecting narratives of abuse and power are in DA2, and how the tragedy of the game feels both obscenely avoidable, and completely inevitable. And Fenris is by your side <3

2) Dirk and Dave, Homestuck

Apparently I have a thing for brothers with really complicated history, what surprising news this must be to everyone reading my blog. The lines of blame and responsibility and love and autonomy in Dirk and Dave’s relationship are really fascinating and thorny: what does it mean to know that, in another universe, you were an abusive guardian? what does it mean to meet your dead older brother again, when he’s your age, and find common ground? everything about them is so complex, and I love it.

3) Frodo and Sam, LOTR

Theeee queer-platonic BroTP/OTP of all time. My ten-year-old heart couldn’t handle them, and I still can’t handle them now. The unashamed, unwavering love that need not be romantic! I blubber at Mount Doom and the Grey Havens like a tiny, tiny child.

Last Movie

Blade Runner, for the first time. Spent the movie being like, wow, this protag’s just straight up the villain, they aren’t even trying to make him sympathetic, huh. Extremely atmospheric, just like I vaguely remember from 2049. And just like in 2049 I found myself wondering why this movie wasn’t from the perspective of all the generally more interesting female characters.

Currently Watching

Getting slowly through Hannibal, I’m in the middle of s2. I thought it would be the kind of show I’d be super into, but something about Mads Mikkelson’s... idk, stagnant over-composure? doesn’t really do it for me, I think. I’m gonna finish. At some point.

Currently Reading

“currently” is quite the misnomer with me: generally speaking, if I like a book, I am damn well consuming it in one sitting if I gotta stay up all night. Most recent books, then: I read the Six of Crows duology, which I thoroughly enjoyed: what every YA fantasy series needs is more murderteens. I gave up on the other Grishaverse books, though: they’re just not nearly as interesting. I also somewhat recently read The Tyrant Baru Cormorant, in the series I affectionately think of as the “lesbian accountant does treasons” books. Baru is a Cas-coded Sam girl, which I very much appreciate in a protagonist.
