Egon Eiermann (1904-70) undoubtedly was one of the most influential architects in postwar Germany: as professor at TH Karlsruhe he had a formative influence on his many students and through his buildings on the young German democracy. On the occasion of Eiermann’s centenary the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe, in close collaboration with the saai | Archiv für Architektur und Ingenieurbau, in 2004 organized a retrospective of the architect’s work that was accompanied by the present book: „Egon Eiermann (1904-1970). Die Kontinuität der Moderne“, edited by Annemarie Jaeggi and published by Hatje Cantz, provides a comprehensive critical evaluation of this pivotal figure of German architecture. Besides a catalogue of 24 selected works, thoroughly illustrated and annotated, the book features very insightful essays on a number of aspects in Eiermann’s oeuvre of which three stand out as particularly informative. First, there is Wolfgang Pehnt’s poignant overview of Eiermann’s oeuvre: without omitting his thriving business during the Nazi era, Pehnt underscores Eiermann’s unwavering modernism and by juxtaposing him and Hans Scharoun works out the fundamentals of Eiermann’s architecture: realism, universality, clarity and functionality are the core values of his architecture.

Sonja Hillebrand on the other hand takes to Eiermann’s pre-1945 architecture and demonstrates how the architect, himself never a member of the Nazi party, made only few concessions to the Nazi’s architectural dogmas and sneakily managed to push through his designs.

On a final note Annemarie Jaeggi’s examination of Eiermann’s buildings for the Federal Republic of Germany deserves particular praise: by means of the embassy in Washington, the German pavilion at Expo 1958 and the „Langer Eugen“ in Bonn Jaeggi carves out the quest for an architectural representation of a democratic Germany and how Eiermann shaped a positive German self-representation with his very own architectural language.

In view of the insightful essays and the excellent work catalogue the present volume is a perfect supplement to earlier publications that critically examines Eiermann’s work and on these grounds is a must-read!

Setting someone's hive on fire is a pretty classic "big deal" pitch move, but there are plenty of other ways to make a dramatic hate confession too...

Interrupt a big event that's very important to them.

Take them out to dinner and ask them out publicly in front of everyone.

Have a truckfull of Black Thorn roses poured onto their doorstep so they can't leave their hive.

Or, gift them a Rafflesia arnoldii with an attached hate letter.

Create a very poorly edited PowerPoint or GrubTube video with a thumbnail that includes an unflattering shot of their face red-circled.
