Been a while since I've posted. I've decided I hate Facebook again and for now I'm letting off steam here.

I said before that I'd deleted my long rant and just stuck to a mini-rant. Well, today I'm posting a long rant. Fair warning: This is a rant.

As far as I can tell, there's no good news about the Borderlands movie. They've changed Commander Knoxx's character to be Atlas's daughter instead of General Knoxx, so I guess she'll be Commander Atlas now. That... doesn't matter. Of all the issues I have with this movie, whose daughter she is is probably the least important. Actually, it's not an issue. Her EXISTENCE is an issue, but not which NPC is her parent. Atlas isn't even an NPC, it's just a gun manufacturer, presumably named after its founder. We never see the founder(s) nor, as far as I can remember, hear any backstory. I'm not sure which problem they were trying to solve by the rename.

First problem: We do have to rescue Lilith, Athena, and one other who I won't mention due to spoilers. I can only think of those three. Lilith tells you to kill her if you can't save her... "Better dead than a damsel." Athena engineers her own rescue; you're just the muscle. So there's kind of a dearth of damsels in this franchise. The movie's premise is that Commander uh... Atlas?... needs to be rescued. So, right. Damsel in distress. Kind of immediately contradicts the lore of Borderlands, who has strong women who generally don't need rescuing.

Second is: why General Knoxx's er, I mean, Atlas's daughter? She's a new character. It's like BORDERLANDS ISN'T CHARACTER-RICH ENOUGH, we have to add more just to get the plot started.

Edit: She still shows credited as Commander Knoxx in my web search, including on IMDB. I saw Atlas in the last article I saw on the movie. It's possible it was simply mistaken. I note parenthetically that Knoxx works for Atlas Corporation, and the DLC he's in is Atlas-heavy. Could just be a mistake. Edit to the edit: The Wikipedia article premise mentions her as Atlas's daughter. But she's named Knoxx. I'm fucking confused; which is she?

Next: They have Kevin Hart playing Roland. Kevin Hart is a comedian. Roland is a serious, somber, straightforward guy who never jokes and never laughs, or even smiles. Any humor that happens in relation to him works because it plays off his sober sincerity.

Roland: Oh good, you're not dead. Lilith: That's his way of saying "Hi". Roland: Sorry. Hi.

Why do they need a stand-up comedian to play Roland? Either Hart is trying to branch out and do some serious acting, or... they're making a comedy.

OK, Cate Blanchett is doing Lilith. I don't know if she's the best choice, but I don't know who else I'd recommend. I guess I'm OK with that.

As for Tannis... I love Jamie Lee Curtis, but she's a scream queen that also does comedies. Tannis isn't FUNNY, she's TRAGIC. Again, there's humor, but it plays off her personality, which is informed by her severe social awkwardness. (She's pretty much coded autistic. I don't know if it's canon.) No doubt the trauma she's suffered has exacerbated any existing personality deficits. Or caused new ones. Can Curtis do a sober Tannis? I mean, play her seriously, not deadpan. I don't know. Again, I don't think she's meant to -- this movie is looking more like a comedy every day. Could be worse, but I'm not sure I'd pick her.

Next, we have Claptrap, who is introduced as "The wise-cracking robot" and played by... Jack Black, a comedic voice actor. Thing is, Claptrap does not crack wise. He's hilarious, but that's because, similarly to Roland and Tannis, the game plays off his naive sincerity. He's funny because he's so serious, but clueless. I haven't memorized every line in the entire franchise enough to instantly recall everything that every claptrap robot has said, but as far as I can remember, Claptrap has told MAYBE three jokes on purpose. One is self-referential, spoken by a claptrap who is supposed to be programming the game: "Borderlands? More like Memelands, am I right?" One is spoken right after a hatch is automatically locked, trapping you in the first map: "I hear that getting eaten by bullymongs isn't such a bad way to go." Was that one a deliberate joke? Don't know, so that's my "maybe." And the third is from a side mission called The Iceman Cometh. It's a moderately silly pun that any 10-year-old would be proud of. When you (as a character) don't react, he then EXPLAINS THE JOKE. When you still don't react, he LECTURES YOU on the nature of humor. TWICE. Naive sincerity, not cracking wise. So again, this suggests the movie being a comedy.

So, we have two of the four vault hunters from the first game, Lilith and Roland. The roles of Mordecai and Brick are interesting, in that THEY AREN'T THERE. Why?

Tiny Tina is. She's a psychotic young teen with a penchant for explosives. She's got a connection to Brick, who -- for some reason -- isn't in the movie. She's not the kind of person who needs a bodyguard -- she's the kind of person against whom YOU need a bodyguard. I only bring this up because... ... Krieg is her bodyguard in the movie. Why? I already mentioned her connection to Brick. Krieg doesn't have a connection to Tina, he has a connection to Maya. I don't know when this movie is supposed to take place in the Borderlands timeline, but if Lilith is retired, it'll be between the first and second. Possibly around the time of the Pre-Sequel. We don't see Krieg until BL2, where he's added as the last playable character after the original four plus Gaige. So the timeline doesn't make sense and Krieg's connection to Tina doesn't make sense and Krieg being Tina's bodyguard doesn't make sense. I don't know anything about the actors, I may look them up and try to watch some of their stuff.

Tina doesn't show in the game until BL2, but there's no reason to think she hasn't been around since Borderlands, we just haven't seen her. (But only after the events of BL:PS, since it's Jack's slag experiments on Tina's parents that kill them and drive her into being a vengeful little psychopath.) But Krieg doesn't show up until he becomes a vault hunter? OTOH until then he was living as a psycho... probably on Pandora. So I suppose the timeline might be OK, technically. I'll give them that one. But I still object to the Tina/Krieg connection.

Gina Gershon as Mad Moxxi: Gina is an attractive woman, doesn't have Moxxi's curves, and she's 61. She's pretty hot-looking but I'm not sure she really fits the character, physically. Can she do Moxxi's va-va-voom? Don't know.

Charles Babalola: I don't know him. I try not to get upset at race lifts; I'm used to Sir Hammerlock being the "great white hunter" stereotype, but I suppose it doesn't hurt anything if he's black. At least he's British. This is a weak protestation at most. EDIT: Several people have pointed out that he's canonically black, which I never noticed. Well, OK then, that one's on me.

Bobby Lee plays Larry. He's another stand-up comedian. There sure are a lot of those for a serious film, eh? Also, who the fuck is Larry?

Ryann Redmond as Ellie: nobody's going to match Ellie's unrealistic proportions, but Ryann seems like a reasonable choice physically; basically, you just need a plus-sized woman who can act. I don't know anything about her acting but I presume she's competent, at least. Ellie is a smartass, so wise-cracking from her is welcome. So how come they cast a stand-up comedian as Roland but a serious actress as Ellie? The cognitive dissonance is making my brain cramp.

And Eli Roth has left the project and declared that he does not want credit for his writing. THAT bodes well.

This is supposed to be canon. Canon my ass. This is a TRAVESTY. EDIT: Somebody said it's not supposed to be canon. I read that it is. I'll try to dig up the reference when I get a minute. EDIT 2: Sorry it took me so long, I was busy procrastinating. Now, in my memory, when the first announced the movie they claimed it would be "true to Borderlands", but of course that's changed. I must have skimmed over the more recent "canon" phrasing, sorry. Apparently it's changed to "canon for the Borderlands Cinematic Universe", which is not the same as canon to the games. To me that's seems a bit disingenuous, considering that as far as I can tell, the Borderlands Cinematic Universe consists of one unfinished movie. (And calling it a "Borderlands Cinematic Universe" also seems a bit conceited since their first -- and so far only -- entry has been in Production Hell for 9 years and hasn't even finished.) So my apologies for getting the "canon" claims wrong, but I'm still unhappy and I think they're making excuses. They've taken an Action Movie script, grabbed some names from the Borderlands franchise, and pretended that the result is a Borderlands movie. They did that with Sly Stallone and the first Judge Dredd movie, remember? (Maybe you don't, but I was a fan of the comics. Fortunately the second movie was much, much better.) This makes me think of Stallone's Judge Dredd. (Also the anime version of the Lensman, but that one's pretty obscure.)

Anyway, I have more, but I think I've said what I need to. I may watch the movie out of morbid curiosity. I'm not going to dislike it out of spite, I'm not that hateful. I'll try to give it a chance. I just don't like the odds.

• The film would be loosely based on the infamous Revelations version of P1....

• ...and by loosely, I mean Persona In Name Only, aimed at Americans, R-Rated action-horror, starring the actors in my joke fancast:

• Frank welcomes the gang to the Velvet Room but does jackshit

• One or more of the girls fucks Edward because why not?

• The demons our heroes battle are generic CGI trash that wouldn't look out of place in literally anything else

• The Personas resemble Stands more than they originally did, however, the gang prefers using their weapons to conserve energy

• Some of the gang prefer melee over guns or vice versa (Ed uses an MP5, Ellen uses a sword, etc.)

• Though the movie is action-horror at its core, elements of other genres are brazenly shoehorned in...such as the aforementioned sex scene or Mark and Brad spewing one-liners

• Half the film would take place against grungy, industrial backdrops because grit.

• For some stupid reason, a wholly original score would be used as opposed to music from either version of the game aside from maybe the iconic Aria of the Soul in a scene or two, and an award-bait song like Dream of Butterfly or School Days, albeit reworked to make more sense in English instead of being nonsensical English lead vocals with Japanese backing vocals.

• Clichés and plot holes would be present across the board instead of using what people liked about the game's story

• It won't ever get made because Atlus refuses to acknowledge the original Persona on its own anniversary, let alone at all

I still haven't finished the game or the manga so I guess I'm out of ideas.

All the Sims that appear in "Ecofinisher's Sims 4 Base Game file" - Part 6/6

I forgot, what was the reason I wanted to do this bio, but here it is.

This post focuses on the Sims, that live in Newcrest. Both self-made and gallery-taken Sims.

WOLFF (Thornton, Morgana and Jake Wolff)

Summary: Morgana and Thortnon had agreed on having at least one child, in order for Morgana to be able to get to know how it is like to be in parenthood. During the son's growth, Thornton slowly sympathized with him and allowed him to be more often around him. Things get weirder, when his former affair Jamie steps into his life again and he has the choice to stay faithful to his newfound family or go a different path.

Summary: Three different childhoods met each other in this WG. All had their different family issues and moved together to escape the drama. They grew up to become BFF's and prayed to be inseparable. One little thing do the girls not know about…..their crush on Don Lothario!

(ILIANA) LANGERAK

Summary: Dustin and Zelda have been hidding their affair for years from their family. Kaylynn, the youngest of the Langerak clan was aware of the situation, but was never able to talk to someone about it in fear, it would only destroy their family. Things begin to change, when Zelda complains about nauseous issues Kaylynn spits out about, what was going on. The drama had intensified in the household, that around the time, Kaylnn's older brother left for college he took her along.

Summary: Zelda and Dustin had to move out from the main house of the Langerak’s as her older sister and Dustin’s relationship changed drastically upon Kaylynn’s confirmation. The whole clan followed different paths leaving the parents back with Zelda and the newborn child. Dustin and Iliana are still married by law, mainly because Dustin doesn’t want to lose his love of his life and is begging for a third or fourth chance…..as if that’s ever gonna happen….

Summary: Upon Kaylynn leaving to be on her own,the oldest Langerak child became a father of two kids. Parker actually had it all good, perhaps better than his own dad. When the kids grew older, Parker began to deal with a peculiar feeling, making him question his life and he eventually returns back to his old habits.

Summary: As they thought that dealing with Lisa during her teenage time was a tough time, it has gotten worse as now Arlo and Darlene have their rebellious phase including their ongoing rivalry. More trouble raises as both Lisa and Ethan bring their partner into their hut as Bebe and Lisa bring their former enemy-ship into the place as well. Will the Bunches really keep their family together in this state or will they put an end and force everyone to leave?

When the girl one day falls in love with the kind boy of their neighborhood the parents have forbidden her any contact with him. Fun fact, they expected she would have obeyed them about that….

ALTO-LINNELL (Bert and Holly alto. Davy Linnell)

Summary: Bert offered his niece and her boyfriend shelter, so both wouldn't be in trouble, upon leaving the Alto clan. Bert does know the Altos very well and doesn't sympathize with them as well. Holly was grateful at first for her uncle's offer, but soon has to realize, that he does have a few problems with some clients....

So apparently there’s a borderlands movie coming out later this year, and the plot summary released by the studio reads like something out of a parody about making s video game movie

Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe's most powerful S.O.B., Atlas. Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team - Roland, a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg, Tina's musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis, the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap, a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands but they'll be fighting for something more: each other.

And the cast list too. Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland. Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, and Jack motherfuckin Black as Claptrap.

I wish to god I was kidding.

Reviewing the All Elite Wrestling personnel 2022 Edition (Part 2) -

PROMOTE

One of the diamonds in the rough so to speak. One should not miss out on his unorthodox techniques or creative moveset. I liked him in Lucha Underground as Killshot and, like there, he stands out because he brings something different to the table. Unlike Keith Lee, who seems like a hit or miss, the only drawback to Swerve is the same probelem AEW has with any talent they don't know what to do with so I'll make it easy for them - push this guy, make his star shine in the spotlight, and give him the recognition he deserves.

Honorable mentions to Kris Statlander and Julia Hart. In Kris Statlander's case she's injured again so it hampers her improvements this year. Had she stayed healthy she'd of taken the spot Jamie Hayter now covets. As for Julia Hart she wasn't on the official roster and I feel sorry for her being put in such a bad position spending half the year in a "will she won't she" storyline between The Varsity Blondes and The House of Black and, when joining said House of Black, is now only 1 of 2 remaining active members and just last week almost died on TV. She deserves better - maybe if Saraya is cleared Julia should do something with her to help her out of this rut. Beyond this I just wish her the best - Justice for Julia!

Anyways Jamie Hayter is 2022's Dark Horse of AEW. She has won over the fans and interest all by being a superior athlete and a vastly improved look from her 2019 version. Even after loss after loss and made to seem like a sidekick the fans don't buy it - they want her to win like they wanted The Acclaimed to win the Tag Team Belts. What's the hold up? Strike whilst the iron is hot - give Jamie some meaningful wins. Oh and put her in the BCC - at least then the faction would mean something more than a platform to hold Bryan Danielson back. Jeez why does Toni Storm have the title and not her...beat her, beat Thunder Rosa to be undisputed, then beat Jade Cargill in a "Champion Vs Champion" match to cement Hayter as the top talent in the women's division.

The better Scorpio Sky. Everything Sky has achieved Jay Lethal should achieve more - one of the most consummate professionals in all wrestling, a fantastic help to guys like Sammy Guevara and Ricky Starks when he put them over, and very humble to help others as best he can. He has already paid his dues in AEW and it's time for him to be rewarded for this.

The bizarro Goldberg. Goldberg got everything but had no dues or tenured talent to deserve it. Claudio is an incredibly strong, fast, techical, versatile, and enduring person in wrestling. He has spent the prime of his entire life in a company who treated him wrong yet we're supposed to feel sorry for how CM Punk got treated. Yeah this is why the fans of wrestling eat poor and live poor because you have right here the most valuable asset in professional wrestling. Oh wait he can't 'talk' you mean he's a stoic throwback and not a bombastic dramatist like your Jericho or Moxley types? I never understand why people want AEW to be an 'alternative' to WWE when you have the most alternative answer to what you know about wrestling in Claudio. He's everything - he's old school, he's new school, he's the guy you could put in ANY ERA and he'd be great. This guy is the modern day Bruno Sammartino except the industry can't book him for 9 years on top because then it'd made sense. A crime this guy isn't AEW World Champion or at least TNT Champion. No no his ROH run doesn't even matter who brought this up!? Go sit down and remain silent until you're asked to talk again.

This was a hard toss-up between him and Max Caster but, like with all things, waiting just a little can make all the difference and Caster is in a good position right now where he belongs. What about Kaz then? He can work, he can talk, and he can help others. I don't get why good people get punished whilst bad people get rewarded. What did Kaz do wrong? You can't say he's too old because a number of talent are doing better than him whilst being older. You can't say he's boring because so is Garcia and Yuta and yet they're pushed. What is it? Lack of ego? No I don't mean Ethan Page I mean he's not causing problems. Is this it? He's too professional? Amazing. Maybe him, Ogogo, Sydal, and some of the others should make a faction, because Tony Khan LOVES FACTIONS, and call themselves "The Professionals" because all they're here to do is win matches and be examples of this business. Imagine AEW needing this as a gimmick.

I'm including this as an entry for them as a Tag Team but honestly you could say they'd do equally well as singles. The Lucha Brothers are mainstays of AEW who have always been constants in the company, Penta even more than Fenix, yet both are due for major pushes. It's like FTR - you can't deny something which always delivers. One day we'll see these two wrestle each other again, which was a treat the last time, and I hope this time it's for higher stakes.

As I've said before in previous years, anyone who is not on the list is because I either find what they are doing fine and AEW can just stay the course or, if they have appeared before, won't again beacuse I am principled to believe what I said before and will stand by it. In the case of Darby Allin I felt the last couple years he was doing fine but 2022 he's been misused and treated like a joke. No better example than the ill-fated loss to Jeff Hardy. If MJF is destined to win the AEW title then destiny sees Darby beating MJF for said title. How can you see it right now? They need to build Darby up now before it's too late. Cut him from Sting, maybe do a "Best of Seven" with Swerve, and try to ensure by 2023's annual recap I'm not regretting putting stock into Darby Allin now.

This comes with a caveat - I do not mean return him to AEW no I mean return him to ROH, let him beat Jericho for the ROH title, and bring it to prominence. Adam Cole's run in AEW was tainted after his win to Jungle Boy (and anyone else by low blow it seems) by having him paired up with Orange Cassidy and his friends Kyle and Bobby made to become second rate versions of themselves too. Kyle, in fairness, did get to be utilised better which only made Adam Cole look more diminished as time went on. We can't see him on AEW first - let him be the flagship to ROH and go from there. A calming influence within a sea of anger at AEW.

The unsung heroine of the women's division - the pinfall princess - Riho suffered an injury back in February and we've not seen her since. She's sorely missed. I never realised just how needed she was until I saw all the awful women's wrestling throughout 2022. Riho is always great just as Hikaru Shida is, just as Yuka Sakazaki is, and even Maki Itoh. It's a cultural export some don't have the stomach for yet people have never felt she didn't truly belong - they're just sour over the success of a perpetual underdog. Riho is a joy to watch because she has to brave the odds.

Last year, Bryan Danielson was the greatest AEW talent working, AEW was doing really well doing into 2022, and it all got ruined when Jon Moxley forced him to become part of this BCC storyline. Ever since then he's been made to look like the 2nd or 3rd or even 4th best of the group (maybe even 5th if you count Regal seducing his "Man in the Mask"). His loss to Daniel Garcia was one of 2022's most pathetic calls. Did Moxley lose to Yuta? Did Jericho position himself to lose to a upcoming talent like Dante Martin? If AEW can't do right by him then at least make him tear it up in NJPW or somewhere else where his style matters. Like Claudio, and as MJF likes to parrot, Bryan Danielson is GEN E RATIONAL TALENT. You can't afford for him to miss the last great years of his career by floundering in the midcard and wrestling bums like Matt Menure. He was born for this and, like Ricky Steamboat, will always be a great talent.

We are slowly losing our freedom of speech

Recently, Jamie Fox came out and apologized for something he said.

Then Neo said something about how he thought children should have to wait until they were of age to be able to choose their sex. Well, the LGBTQ community went after him. He came back and said he would not apologize for having an opinion.

I agree with him. So many people are trying to "cancel" people just because they don't like their opinions.

Anymore, no one seems to be entitled to their own opinions. If you disagree with someone, if this is your own opinion on a subject and people don't like your opinion, then they want to cancel you.

I remember Kevin Hart stood up and said he wasn't going to apologize for something he said 10 years before that he already apologized for. Good for him! He didn't care that he would lose the Oscar gig; it was about principals.

Look, we've all done or said something stupid in our life. Every single one of us! Does that mean people can continue to berate you with that years later? No, absolutely not. You made a mistake. Hopefully, you've apologized for it and learned from it and didn't do it again. It's over. Now everyone else should get over it, too.

And as far as Neo is concerned, he's allowed to have an opinion, and I say good for him for standing up and saying he won't apologize just because you don't like his opinion. Where is our freedom of speech going in this country? Are we not allowed to say what we think in order to not piss off someone? I get that we must have respect for others' beliefs or race or sexual orientations or disabilities but just because you don't agree with something is no reason to come after a person. That is also discrimination against freedom of speech.

We need to stop being so soft in this country. We need to stop being our children's friends and being afraid to punish them. We need to stop giving trophies to everyone who didn't win. We need to be able to voice our opinions whether you agree with them or not. We need to get over ourselves.

So today my friends look at where the country is going. When we start taking away our freedom of speech, when we are no longer able to voice our own different opinions, our rights will slowly erode until we have none left.

And then you might as well move to Russia where your opinions will get you killed. Remember, this country was built of free speech. These are our rights. Like what a person says or not, keep scrolling, follow someone else, but you don't get to dictate a person's opinion.

Luck of the Titanic by Stacey Lee

Read time: 4 Days Rating: 4/5

The quote: "I'm afraid my brother wants to see the stars, not be one." — Valora Luck

Well, I'm not okay... That ending is so beautifully painful. And really not what I expected coming into this. Yes Luck of the Titanic is set on the Titanic and you expect death, you know the framing of what is coming to come to a degree. But the surprise is more what role are your protagonists and their allies going to play in the sinking, what are their social statuses what is their best level likelihood of survival and how much ingenuity is going to be needed to improve their odds.

Leaving the plot alone in this review as I usually do, you can find that in other reviews, characters are my drawcard so my reviews focus on that. From a very early point, I referred to half Chinese half British protagonist, Valora 'Val' Luck as ingenious but almost desperate that part of my opinion of her didn't really change. But she has managed to absorb parts of both of her parent's skills sets, as well as those of her recently deceased employer. She uses them all well and her upbringing and employment mean that her ability to pass both as the 'Merry Widow' and in Third Class is logical. She blends with both, can socialise with both but does expect some loyalty (which she does get from the other women in the book Charlotte and April). Overall I did end up really liking Val. She is my kind of female character taking risks to go after whats she wants, taking s*** from no man and willing to love.

I will mention Val's love, Bo, first before Jamie. Bo, Chow Bo Wah, his Jamie's best friend and one of the few people that know about Val before she arrived on the Titanic. Bo is about the same age as the twins and is all but warned off Val by Jamie when they meet not for her good for his. Bo is burdened by a lot of pain after he lost his brother in a fight, the beautiful ring he wears was made by him for his brother An. The chemistry between Bo and Val is instant but they are in an awkward situation with them both wanting different things Jamie, what they think is best. I like this relationship though it's so sweet. As are their nicknames for each other 'Stowaway' and 'Wagtail', it also involves one of the cutest love tokens I've seen in historical fiction in a while. 17-year-old Jamie 'Valor' Luck is Val's twin. Jamie's nickname from his crew is Little Captain. They will follow him like he is their captain, helped them learn English and keeps them all together like a little family. He disliked the acrobatic work that Val and he did as kids, he's happy working on the ship and enjoys the freedom, the stargazing. He's a brilliant contrast to Val. I like his growth and the life lessons he learns, the way the events of this books shapes his future.

Jamie's crew is a mix of sweet, cute and understandably grouchy. All of the crew have their pair, their best friend that they are almost always with Olly and Wink are never far apart and roomed with Jamie and Bo who protect them as need be. Olly and Wink are just so adorable, not much more than kids they would basically follow Val anywhere. My favourite was Drummer, we find out so little about him. I like his restless energy and caring heart. I particularly like the line "Little sister, there is much sorrow in your face", at that point there was and he know exactly how to help her. All of them have their stories. One of the best characters for me is the American Miss April Hart, couture designer ballsy as hell and something of a saviour for Val. April spends most of the book in men's suits, we find out towards the end that she is LGBTQ+. I just really like her and her attitude.

A quick comment dump

Timing is everything in this book. Something big happens as the ship hits the iceberg.

The whole book is set over the 5 days the Titanic sailed. April 10 1-83, April 11 p84-143, April 12 p143-218, April 13 p219-246, April 14 247-293, April 15 p294-359 and an epilogue.

"Dragon and phoenix twins are yin and yang opposites that usually create harmony together. But when we disagree, we won't usually stand down, especially the more masculine 'yang' dragon, which in our case has always been me" — (Val, p48) The dragon and phoenix thing is hugely important to the book and to the Chinese culture, I think. Val is willing to stand her ground and more than once it gets them in trouble because they both rise to anger, Jamie in her defence.

This is one of those fantastic books where the discriminated-against group own the slur. There is nothing quite like it.

"Taking risks gives fashion its passion." — (April, p132) I adore April and her fashion analogies and quotes.

"If you always give, you will always have." — (Tao, p195) This is a saying not a quote but I really do like it.

Bo, Val and Jamie's complex relationship is done justice. It's best friends sister but not.

""See that circle? The bigger fish create a whirlpool, helping to stir up the smaller fish. Makes them easier to catch. We call it that a kiss from Tin Hau, the goddess of shipwrecks and sailors. It means good luck is on the way. Maybe for you." [...] "Tin Hau is generous but quick to anger. Some believed she sent the monsoon to destroy our village because we had taken too much from the sea."" — (Bo, p242) My mythology loving self really liked this it fits in perfectly. Val regularly pays respects to her parents, she practices Chinese traditions, Bo has proved by this point he does too. Winding a goddess in there was a fantastic choice and Tin Hau (Mazu in Mandarin) was the right fit. Her demeanour feels like it fits Val's a little too, I don't think that is a coincidence. That said this moment is also kinda heartbreaking once you look back at it. Oh and this says a lot about the ties that bind on the ocean.

"a woman with the punched-in face of a bulldog." — (Val, p314) I think this is one of the iconic women from the Titanic. A brutally American woman who alienated most of the first class.

There are some wonderful descriptions in this book, from colour to clothes to acrobatic acts. The description is an important part of the story in a way.

A personal issue I had with it. The writing took a while to get into its stride. Almost like it took a while for Val to find her voice, or maybe it took me a while took to understand and appreciate her voice. Val is frank and bold as a young woman, forward and borderline bossy, especially to her brother and his crew that is reflected in her manner of speech. For me, this book will likely end up being unmemorable. But it is a great execution of a fantastic idea. Drawing attention to a little thought of a group of people from the Titanic and provoking thoughts of social status and racism. If I do remember Luck of the Titanic it will likely be for the devastating ending. That said recent books I've thought would be unmemorable haven't been. So we'll see. I do recommend it though I did find it to be an enjoyable read.

Although I've tried to make it as gender-neutral as possible, it's been kinda hard 😅 That being said, just because there's a man and a woman together in the picture doesn't mean you have to write a straight couple 😅 You can have two men together, two women, a non-binary couple. Relationships with more than two people (poly) is also allowed.

The idea is that you follow the theme of the square/moodboard, not that you've got to include everything in the board. A moodboard is a way to inspire you to write, so write what you took from the board(s) you choose 🥰
