Xenia Lothbrok formerly Rurikovich better known as Xenia of Novgorod and called among her people the Viking Princess is the princess of Kievan Rus, daughter of the late King Rurik, Igor's older sister and niece of Prince Oleg, Dir and Askold. Always protected and guarded, Xenia grew up lovingly among her family, raised in the belief in the Norse gods and raised as a proud Viking woman, to which her people belonged before converting to Christians, still firmly maintaining her faith today, like her father once, who was a convinced Viking, warrior and king and still today refuses to follow the Christian faith, which she sees as a threat. As the only child of her parents, Xenia had a strong will from an early age, knowing how to use it to make others follow her will and to captivate them with her charm. In addition, she showed early on what she wanted to fight for by taking a great interest in the battles, travels and plans of her father, who included her in their plans from an early age and relied on Xenia's intelligence and acumen, which made men passionate and skillful supported, which is why he took them and their uncles with him into battles, on the sea and on raids. After the birth of her brother and the death of her mother, she took over her mother's upbringing, grieving but outwardly appearing strong and determined. However, behind this mask in order not to appear vulnerable is her mother's gentle nature, great sensitivity, a feeling for others and wanting to help them, her good-natured heart that burns for those she loves and is loyal to them and Igor is similar is than everyone else assumes. Despite the admiration of her people and her role as an advisor to Dir and Igor, she always feels alone, doesn't belong and is sure that her fate lies somewhere else. Now she lives in Kattegat with her beloved husband King Ivar, at his side and as the new Queen of Kattegat and mother of Cailan Ivain, Vidar Ragnar and Edda Aslaug. ⸻ Vikings.

Two of my living history kits, or two versions of one kit, finally coming together. This is my high status kit focusing on Kievan Rus in the later 10th to early 11th century. The territory of Kievan Rus encompassed the areas of modern day Ukraine, Belarus and western Russia; and the society was culturally a mix of Slavic and eastern Scandinavian peoples with notable Byzantine influences on the upper social strata.

Did Europeans buy enslaved Slavs from the Muslims in medieval times?

Europeans were mostly selling Slavs to Muslims. Venice, for example, was a major medieval hub of international slavery. Venetians were not allowed to sell Catholics, so they were selling Pagans and Orthodox Christians. They were buying from Germans, Vikings, early Rus rulers and many others.

Later, Italians worked as resellers and movers in the Islamic slave world of Crimea and Turkey. They were buying Slavs from some Muslims and selling to others.

Still, there were Slavic slaves bought for the European masters. Beautiful blond Rus girls had some “exotic” value for the South-Western Europeans.

There’s something I think is pretty interisting about Ivar’s ships, specifically his male ships. Like from the fics I’ve read Ivar/Heahmund seems to be the most popular and, while not as popular, Oleg/Ivar also seems to resonate with some Ivar stans.

And the funny thing is that, both Heahmund and Oleg are old enough to be Ivar’s dads. 

Supposedly Ivar is 20 years old in season 6, we don’t know how old Oleg is, but based on the actors age he should be around 36 years old. 16 years older than Ivar. 

In season 4b and season 5 Ivar was 17/18/19, Heahmund died at 44 halfway through season 5b when Ivar was 19. Making him 25 years older than Ivar. 

I don’t really have a  point, except that some of us Ivar stans really clocked in on Ivar’s daddy issues with these ships 😭

Entered my first attempt at jewellery making to my second Queen's King's Prize Tournament! I didn't do as well at last year's, having won the Queen's Choice, but I came away with new connections, resources, and ideas!

What I entered was a 10th century Volga Rus Dukach based on grave descriptions! I found vintage Portuguese Escudo for the coins, and the various supplies I used came from Fire Mountain Gems. My source book I used was Iuliia Stepanova's book, The Burial Dress of the Rus' in the Upper Volga Region (Late 10th-13th Centuries)
