When nikki wants to go to the audition in the hybe building, he got lost (ofc, that building is sooo huge). Then, he abruptly ask to a stranger to ask for direction, that stranger happened to be jane. Seeing him stutter, mixing both korean and japanese together in a same sentence, jane confidently strike up a conversation in japanese. Hearing the "stranger" could talk in japanese make him felt soo relieved. • Nikki develop a slight crush on Jane. He would secretly glance at her direction when she's in the same room/show with him.

rory’s guide to where the howlters might move

i was talking with @underthisweather about this because we both play sims 4 and/or watch simmers that aren’t dan and phil play. there are a lot of people more well-versed in the sims 4 game and the dapg series than i am, but as someone who deliberately bought sims packs to get all the playable worlds, i can at least give it a guess.

i briefly considered making this a tier-list video but i have WAY too much on my plate to wrangle making a template and editing video right now, so quick post it is. i use all the world names, so feel free to look around youtube and other places online if you want to actually see the worlds.

Guidelines

this is all residential worlds, so vacation worlds and secret worlds aren’t being ranked. sorry, batuu (/j).

obviously, willow creek has been their home for a million years, so that’s not in the running, but i’ll talk about it a little bit before we get into the other worlds.

even though i’m not making a tier list video, i am making tiers because it’s fun. they are:

-top contenders: my best guesses for where dil, tabitha, dalien, and nuki land -possible: not my guesses, but also i won’t be completely humiliated if they pick one of these -for the bit: not likely, but if they have a particular joke or personal attachment or storyline in mind, that could keep them in the running -nah: probably not happening

if you want to jump to the end and skip my blathering, that’s where the full tier list will be.

a quick primer as to what we’re talking about here:

-“worlds” are a group of neighborhoods sorted by a general theme or biome or both.

-“neighborhoods” are a group of buildings/spaces grouped into a loose theme. while sims 4 isn’t open world like sims 3, it has wandering spaces between lots that don’t require additional loading that form the connective tissue of the neighborhoods

-“lots” are where specific buildings/houses go. there are a variety of lots: residential, commercial, etc., and they can have specific traits to help or challenges to make things harder, much like you can give sims traits. residential is our main focus here

-each lot has a grid size. 64x64 is huge; 20x15 is a lot smaller.

here’s what they’ve told us about what’s going to happen, pulled directly from the transcript (timestamp):

Phil: We are gonna either build a house from scratch or buy a house, but we're moving. Dan: We're shaking things up. Phil: To a new neighborhood. Dan: The Howlters are getting out of here. Look, it's that time. They lived a whole life. They were ready to retire. They got this three-bedroom massive house. They don't need all of this stuff. Phil: They don't. Dan: They need to start a new life in a new neighborhood now that their gay kids are out of there and they've got an emo and a Shiba Inu to raise. Phil: Yeah. Think about it, though. We're gonna have new neighbors, new friendships, new experiences, new jobs.

generally what we know/can guess:

-prebuilt or custom-built residences are most likely, but they can also bulldoze and build on other kinds of lots without cheats. i summarize the amount of lots each neighborhood has to give you an idea of how many potential neighbors might be around.

-dan is implying they’re going to downsize, so a smaller lot seems likely

-it sounds like dil and tabitha will be getting new jobs? that probably won’t have a ton of impact on the world/lot because jobs are largely “go somewhere else to work and you either can watch or not” or “you work from home but the neighborhood doesn’t have much impact here”. still, good to know

Willow Creek

just wanna give a quick shoutout to willow creek, dil’s home world from the beginning. it’s a base game world, and it’s got a lot of goodies: excellent starter homes, three empty lots (the one they used is a 30x20, which is not as big as they get, but is also not the smallest), notable townies (pancakes family!), a nice park, and a little downtown area. the vibes are distinctly southern USA in biome and architecture

neighborhoods

sage estates: mansions! two residential lots (one occupied by default, one prebuilt empty).

pendula view: historic section, featuring the goths. four lots (three prebuilt, one empty 30x20).

courtyard lane: current home of the howlters and pancakes! in their game, all five lots have houses (shout out to the owl slide).

foundry cove: starter homes. five lots (four prebuilt, one empty 30x20).

crawdad quarter: park, museum, nightclub, gym, library

Oasis Springs

another base game world! VERY deserty, specifically with a slightly palm springs (southern CA, USA) vibe? they have a lot of vague deserts in the sims 4 without actually considering biome too deeply, which i can say because i’m a high-desert queer. anyway.

neighborhoods

acquisition butte: midcentury and kind of mission-style mansions. four residential lots (three prebuilt, one empty 40x30).

skyward palms: two residential lots with mansions.

bedrock strait: the description calls it “delightfully kitschy”. five residential lots (four prebuilt, one empty 30x20).

parched prospect: single-family homes similar to bedrock strait, maybe with less kitsch? five residential lots (four prebuilt, one empty 30x20)

mirage canyon: downtown area, with museum, lounge, park, gym, and bar.

upsides

i wouldn’t call dan and phil desert gays, but irl palm springs is pretty gay! there are a lot of options here to renovate that aren’t giant but aren’t tiny, either. the howlters could get invested in the landgraab drama, if they wanted. the weather is also a lot less rainy than most other words, which means fewer thunderstorms (a big plus for my gameplay, hard to say for them).

downsides

as previously stated, i don’t see dan and phil as desert gays. oasis springs isn’t their architectural style, and emo dalien would probably be miserable (this could be an upside for story reasons, but i’m leaning toward it not working specifically here). plus, oasis springs is an early sims world, and i feel like they’ll go newer for the fun of it.

i deliberated over this one for a second because it’s mostly a no, but i think it’s just possible enough to put in “Possible”. the very bottom, though.

Newcrest

honestly, i’m hesitant to call newcrest a world all its own because it’s basically willow creek without anything in it. there are no preset buildings here, just three neighborhoods with five empty lots.

neighborhoods

bridgeview: lots are 2 20x15, 2 30x20, 1 40x30

llama lagoon: lots are 1 30x20, 1 30x30, 2 40x30, 1 50x40

ridgeline drive: lots are 3 30x20, 1 40x20, 1 40x30

upsides

one word: versatility. i play here all the time because it’s easy to make a tiny home (my favorite way to build my sims’ skills) on the smallest lots and build a full town around them, complete with all the houses, neighbors, and lot types you want. for youtubers who are into storytelling, it’s very appealing.

downsides

i honestly don’t see dan and phil as youtubers who want to make their own towns. they could pull from the gallery entirely without taking up too much time, but that feels too stale for their playstyle and personal aesthetics, and i think they want to shake things up more. it wouldn’t even make a good “we said we were moving but we didn’t say it would be different” bit.

Magnolia Promenade

technically possible, but i doubt it’s happening: it’s a similar style to willow creek with three retail lots and one empty 30x20 residential lot.

Windenburg

the world that came with get together, which we know dan and phil have. quality-wise, it’s one of the best worlds in the whole game: a bunch of lots, beautiful architecture, variety in neighborhoods. it has a real northwestern european vibe.

neighborhoods

windslar: mix of large houses and smaller. six residential lots with one empty 40x30, and a chalet gardens lot, including hedge maze.

olde platz: old downtown of windenburg with a bunch of housing but no empty lots. four residential, bar, library, cafe, nightclub, and an ancient ruins lot.

lykke centre: new downtown of winderburg. park, cafe, gym, nightclub, and a giant pool.

the crumbling isle: rich people on an island! five residential lots with one empty 20x20.

upsides

versatility, but with structure. building a new house on that 20x20 island lot seems very possible to me, but they could take one of the empty prebuilts or evict someone easily. a lot of neighbors to mess with, and a lot of destinations to play in. i visit lykke center’s nightclub and pool in my games all the time.

downsides

not only would i say tudor is not dan and phil’s style (which is a lot of the non-mansion housing), i would say that, despite the slightly more germanic or nordic bent, it might be too familiar in some ways? but the bigger impediment i think is that it isn’t silly enough for their playstyle and doesn’t fit any of the characters. emo dalien probably won’t pub crawl, you know?

San Myshuno

the world that came with city living, and dab and evan’s stomping grounds! big city and mostly apartment living.

neighborhoods

spice market: listed as a “family neighborhood”. six apartment units in two buildings, one 30x30 single-family house prebuilt, one karaoke bar.

arts quarter: the “bohemian” neighborhood where the humor and hijinks festival happens. six apartment units, including a penthouse, and an art museum.

fashion district: the “young and trendy” neighborhood where the romance festival and geekcon happen. six apartment units, including a penthouse, and a karaoke bar.

uptown: the “luxurious” neighborhood, with four apartment units, a gym, and a rooftop lounge. the city park’s next to this one.

upsides

we know this is VERY dan and phil because dab and evan already live here (and their place looks like the dnp manchester flat)! it would be very funny if dab’s parents showed up and we saw dnp playing dab like he was constantly annoyed they were cramping his style. i would also enjoy if they demolished the standalone house and built a city-style house like forever home. not that i’m trying to get a house tour by any means possible or anything.

downsides

this isn’t different enough, and that’s why i mostly think it won’t happen. i think it would only happen if dab and evan went elsewhere.

For the bit. i think they’ll go a different direction but they also can’t resist being self-referential, so i can’t rule it out entirely

Forgotten Hollow

the world that came with vampires. if you’ve watched this sims series in full, you’ve seen it before. i play in it constantly, but most people aren’t into occult sims like i am or build cemetery lots to keep all their dead sims. for some reason.

garliclauter place: empty prebuilt, 30x20, vampire nexus lot trait

there’s also some non-lot space that’s fun to hang out in, like the central park (that isn’t a park lot) and wilderness behind most of the lots

just skipping to this because it’s an easy “nah”: they’ve been here before and purely did it as an alternate-universe spooky week episode.

Brindleton Bay

the world that came with dogs and cats (and the first canon gay sim townies)! we know they have it because nuki exists. rainy seaside vibes.

neighborhoods

sable square: listed as both the “cultural center” of the world, but as a “monument” to their pets. three residential lots with one empty 30x20, a park with the dog-friendly lot trait, and a vet clinic.

cavalier cove: seaside residential of varying sizes. five residential lots with two empty 30x20s.

whiskerman’s wharf: touristy downtown wharf. three residential lots with one empty 40x30, a bar, and a lounge.

deadgrass isle: island with a museum lot. also has a lighthouse i think you can run around in, but i haven’t tried it.

upsides

if they were doing nuki-focused story or were looking to fill a house entirely with cats and dogs, this would be the place to go. maybe the howlters could have gay friends and live next door to the heckings! dan and phil yelling about the feral/townie cats would be a delight.

downsides

honestly, i’m just not a huge fan of this world. it never runs well on my computer, it rains all the time (which i like in real life, but not the sims), and if i have pets, i’m always in the vet clinic getting that stuff to work. obviously this is a ymmv thing, but i think it’s too bland for dan and phil as well.

low in “Possible”. i think oasis springs makes more sense, honestly.

Del Sol Valley

the world from get famous, which is basically a giant los angeles clone.

neighborhoods

mirage park: three residential lots, including one empty 50x40

starlight boulevard: the downtown area. two lounges, one museum, one nightclub, one park.

the pinnacles: mansion area. three prebuilt residential lots.

i’m gonna put this in “nah” quickly because dab is pursuing the actor career and might come here if he wants fame, but it’s more of a world to visit than live in. i don’t hate it or anything, but there’s few sims to interact with, and it wasn’t well-built. (one of the mansions has no bathrooms!) i think the only potential spoiler here is if dan and phil (mostly dan) wanted an outlet to rant about the entertainment industry, but they can do that without moving to del sol valley.

Strangerville

came with the pack of the same name! this is different than every other world because there’s a built-in narrative about the government and weird behavior, but it also has the neighborhood structure.

neighborhoods

secret lab: this is part of the narrative and is a single lot, but it gets its own neighborhood mention because, if you look up the map, it takes up the entire upper left corner.

shady acres: rich part of strangerville. five residential lots with two empty 30x20s.

strangerville plaza: main part of strangerville. four prebuilt residential lots, one library, and one bar.

upsides

honestly, that i have any is going to probably set me apart from any sims player-dapg fan combo. i think the red desert look is nicely different from the willow creek look, the build items are sometime underrated, and dan’s area 51 reference in the latest video could have been a hint. dil has been super close to alien weirdness; might as well follow that to its logical conclusion!

downsides

i don’t actually think dan and phil will do strangerville’s story because they want something a little more different. the richer housing in this world isn’t super well-built, and i can’t imagine them building a trailer in a trailer park for fun (although they should; i enjoy those kinds of build videos a lot).

Sulani

the world that came with island living, probably most directly inspired in style by hawaii. this is a fun one because one of the neighborhoods is built on a volcano, multiple lots include sections of water, and you can turn into a mermaid! or, you know, just have a drink on the beach.

lani st. taz: four residential lots including one empty 50x50, and a beach lot

mua pel’am: the volcano neighborhood! three residential lots, including one empty 40x30, and a lot of fun exploratory territory.

ohan’ali town: main town area. four prebuilt residential lots, one beach lot, one bar

upsides

very different than willow creek, good if they want to pursue a “dil and tabitha are kind of retired and immortal, why not go to the beach” storyline, generally just a good world.

downsides

if “pale nerds move to the desert” is a bad idea, “pale nerds move to the beach” isn’t much better. the off-the-grid options seem VERY unlikely!

Glimmerbrook

realm of magic’s residential world! (there’s a portal to another world in this one, but you can’t live there without mods/cheats.) another world where i like it in theory, but the construction could be better, and it’s mostly centered around an occult type.

i’m putting this in “Top contenders” with an asterisk: i don’t think it’ll happen yet, and if/when it does happen, it’ll be because dalien graduated high school and moved to university, which was implied in the latest video to be a likely path for dalien. my understanding is that university plays work better if the students live out of the world, but imagine dan and phil passing up a chance to talk about their uni experiences. i bet dalien will live his conflicted alien life in the dorms, at least to start with.

Evergreen Harbor

eco lifestyle’s world! it doesn’t have a strict narrative like strangerville does, but it’s built specifically for residents to vote on community initiatives and with mechanics that change the look depending on how environmentally conscious everyone’s being.

neighborhoods

grims quarry: former quarry turned residential neighborhood. three prebuild single-family lots and one apartment lot.

port promise: former industrial port trying to be reclaimed by the community. three prebuilt residential lots, one bar, one community space.

conifer station: former train area turned residential. two prebuilt residential lots, one apartment space, one community space.

upsides

i honestly think this one has a lot of potential, both in regards to dan and phil’s tastes and storyline options. going from strict scientist toward environmentalist would be a great route for dil, and the household could live in an apartment without being in the city, if they felt like downsizing that much. dan specifically has a reformed nihilist vibe that would go really well here, and dumpster diving/woohooing is a LOT of fun.

downsides

maybe not glamorous enough? dalien would probably hate it, which is not a hard no for me lol. they might want a world with more neighbors to torment, too. i’m also not sure if dan and phil have eco lifestyle, are interested, or even really know about it.

Top contenders, even if dan and phil don’t know it

Mt. Komorebi

snowy escape’s world, which is definitely japanese in influence, but not tokyo: it’s specifically more rural mountain areas. it’s also unique in that it’s half residential world, half vacation world, and the mountain is snowy even if you don’t have the seasons pack.

neighborhoods

yukimatsu: mountain peak with ski slopes! two rental lots, one onsen bathhouse, and one empty residential 50x50.

senbamachi: old part of town. three prebuilt residential lots, one bar, one park.

wakaba: new part of town. three residential lots, including one empty 20x15, one lounge, one rental.

upsides

look, it’s japan. dan and phil like japan (to put it mildly) and this pack melds older style with modern luxury real well. the builds are really solid as well; this was around the time when the sims team got simmers involved in making buildings, and it makes a big difference. the one time i played with dan and phil sims, they lived in mt. komorebi.

downsides

the combination of sports and vacation makes this a bit less likely as a moving destination, i think.

For the bit. it’s borderline imo, but if they go here, it will largely be because dan and phil love japan.

Henford-on-Bagley

cottage living’s world, which is very deliberately rural england in style.

neighborhoods

the bramblewood: mostly woods, with some buildings. three prebuilt residential lots, one park.

old new henford: the real farming neighborhood. four residential lots, including one empty 50x40.

finchwick: the village. two residential lots and one bar.

tier ranking

nah. if i think windenburg might be too familiar, henford-on-bagley definitely is, and i doubt they’ll do farming gameplay.

Tartosa

the world for the still-broken wedding stories pack! mediterranean in inspiration, mostly italy, i think.

neighborhoods

terra amorosa: waterfall, bridge, and buildings. three residential lots, including one empty 30x30, and one wedding venue.

porto luminoso: seaside town. three residential lots, including one empty 40x20, one rental lot, and one lounge.

tier ranking

nah. if we go here, it’ll be for the devan wedding, but even then i don’t think it’s super their style. (tbf i haven’t played here a ton, but the lounge is fun to visit)

Moonwood Mill

the werewolf pack’s world! i think this is a bit more liveable for most people than the vampire world, if only because there’s some variety in building type, but it’s still an occult pack.

Copperdale

the high school years world! mountain western united states vibe with a lake dividing the town in two. the map is beautiful, honestly.

neighborhoods

rockridge heights: the high school gets its own two-part neighborhood, divided into a high school building for regular school gameplay and an auditorium for things like prom, graduation, and a job fair.

prescott square: downtowny area. three prebuilt residential lots, one library, one thrift and bubble tea store (random, but high school years comes with thrifting as a money-making opportunity for teens).

plumbite cove: waterside area. three residential lots, including one empty 20x20, one rental, and one park, but my favorite part is the rabbit hole amusement park (you don’t get to see anyone go on the rides, but it’s a common afterparty destination).

upsides

if you ask me, this is the most likely neighborhood for howlter relocation! they specifically referenced high school years as dalien’s next stop, there’s a small empty lot to build on, it’s one of the newer sims expansions, and it’s different enough from willow creek to make it interesting while not reinventing the wheel. the social opportunities for dalien will be big! even if they don’t move here, we’re definitely going to see it a lot.

downsides

i do think dan and phil’s tastes have gotten more upscale over the years, so they outgrew willow creek, and copperdale might be a little quaint/small for them, too. doesn’t change the fact that dil and tabitha still have a teen.

the growing together world! seaside town grown up; probably san francisco bay area since lots have the quake zone trait, “sequoia” implies that biome, and the map has a big bridge on it.

neighborhoods

anchorpoint wharf: downtown area. two residential lots, including an empty 30x20, one library, and one rental.

gilbert gardens: family recreation spot. three residential lots, including an empty 40x20, and one recreation center.

hopewell hills: more suburban. four residential lots, including an empty 30x20.

upsides

family space with a lot of options to build and annoy/clone neighbors, while not sacrificing a more urban feeling. plus, it’s the second most recent pack, which means it still feels fresh to a lot of people.

downsides

i’ll be honest, i thought san sequoia was a slam dunk when i was conceptualizing this post. but now that i’ve gone through all the other worlds, i think it’s honestly too young for the howlters. dalien is not splash pad age, for sure. i think it’s still a solid contender, but i would be a bit surprised if it gets picked.

my personal theory is that they're working less on the hitb "storyline" and releasing shorter videos (this & the "actually watching nukie" one) in between hitbs/botws/re:views/etc because just filmed a bunch of stuff in a batch or two and scheduled it to upload bc they're working on something behind the scenes.. however given that im not on their patreon i dont rlly know whats going on n this theory prolly doesnt hold much water anyways.

the only reason i rlly think it is that iirc theres this one forum post from when space cop released where jay was like "if we make another movie we just gotta take a month off and spend a fuckton of money". n scheduled uploads would fill out the time theyd spend filming to make everything seem Normal...

I have buds that have their patreon and they've been telling me that they've had this like "secret project" running in the background for a while but last time they had a "secret project" it was the ad for Justin Roiland's game with Rich flattening his dick in a toastmachine thing. So I'm pretty sure it's NOT GI 2 if it's anything. Don't keep your hopes up 💔

I'm thinking about Red Letter Media's Nukie video and the idea of VHS grading again. Do you have any idea how easy it would be to fake that? It's like Rich said, they can't open the plastic to inspect the tape, they're literally just looking at how banged up the corners are and how pristine the shrink wrap is. If you have an old, beat up copy of Back to the Future, what is stopping you from going to Office Depot and having a new box printed on glossy cardstock? Cut it out, fold it, glue it together, throw in some random naked tape you have in a box somewhere, and then shrink wrap it at home. How could they possibly tell the difference? How much fidelity could a "real" tape box have? If it was originally printed in the 80s, the only problem you could run into nowadays is making it look TOO good. TOO many dots per square inch. TOO crisp edges. I'm sure you could fudge it in photoshop and make a high-res png of the cover look like it was printed in a Taiwanese factory in 1986. VHS forgery seems simple enough, because the forger would have access to the same high quality photos as the appraisal company.

The Wish Granter's Apprentice AU

Because I want to yowl into the void:

As I've probably mentioned before, this is a Canon Rewrite/Patchwork Fic that borrows some things from the J-Drama and live action film

That means none of the Tsubasa crossover stuff, though Clow Reed still plays a major role

Yuko and Clow had a kid and he looked just like Watanuki because of course he did

This kid we'll call him Kimihiro Reed died, they wished to see him again but the price was that Yuko would have to grant wishes in the shop and outlive Clow until she sees their son again boy oh boy that sounds familiar huh

....and then Clow fucks off to go make those damn cards I guess

Years later Watanuki's parents (who are normal ass people and not the Sakura/Syaoran clones or whatever) go to Yuko wishing for a child since they're not able to have any

Yuko agrees to help them but the price is that Yuko has to raise their kid in if anything happens to them

Their son is born and whaddya know, he looks just like Clow and Yuko's dead kid and he can see spirits, they don't know what's wrong with him

Little Watanuki gets lured into busy traffic by a spirit one night, Mama and Papa 'Nuki go to save him but get run over by a truck, rest in fuckin peace

Yuko shows up and takes Watanuki to the shop and raises him from then on

He's sick and beginning to well, "disappear" from his run-in with the spirit and his general sadness/blaming himself for his folk's passing I guess, Yuko nurses him back to health until he can go back to school and rejoin the outside world

He meets Himawari and Doumeki when he goes back to school

Stuff from here on out plays out a bit similarly to canon but with a kind of Stranger Things/80s kids movie vibe

They all grow older over the course of events

DouWata, DouWata everywhere

Watanuki does end up taking over the shop after Yuko dies but there's none of that "I can't leave and I watch everyone I love get old and die" bullshit and he gets to live a mostly normal life with Doumeki and nothing hurts

There's quite a bit more but that's all I can squeeze out of my tired brain at this time....

First day of Kool (Ben 10)

it was the first day of class after the spring break, and the students of the Kindergarten class couldn't wait to meet the new kids at bellview elementary school. of course they're parents had given them a heads up that the new kids were special, they still needed diapers after all but most of the kids were cool with that, it made them feel super big (though a few were worried about stinkies happening) there was also the fact that (and this was the part that little Jay and Peter, his bestest buddy loved) the new kids were five like everyone else. They were both TEN year olds, but they'd been made all simple or something cuz of one of those aliens always running around. "Heh, Just remember, be nice to them, my mommy told me if I make'em cry I'LL be in diapers for a MONTH." Peter said, walking to school with Jay. "Heh, no problem, i heard they're happy go lucky dorks, and get amazed easily. I bet we can have them calling us the coolest kids ever before recess." "Heh, put your money where your mouth is!" "..what money? everything I have is in my piggy bank." Jay said, confused. "..I meant..oh never mind." Peter said, rolling his eyes and then the pair got a look at the new kids as their grandpa dropped them off. The boy was wearing a T-shirt with chaze from paw patrol on it, sucking on a pacifire and wearing some kinda weird watch, whining and fusing as his grandfather held out a hand for the paci but the so called big kid didn't seem all that willing to give it up, shaking his head till he got a light swat on his butt.. that was covered with a pair of dark green shorts that did NOTHING to hide the fact he was in a massive diaper! "Benny, I told you, no nukies at school. you promised if I let you suck on it on the way over you'd give it up willingly." the grandpa said. Benny whined again but then spits the paci out, getting a sigh and eye roll from his gramp's who hand now had a bunch of spit in it too, making the girl giggle and laugh. "Bennnn you silly! you were 'pose to just pull it out!" she hooted, brushing her orange hair back and wiggling her hips. dressed in a loose blue top, she had gone with a white skirt that didn't fully hide her diaper, though if she was embarrassed by the bulky white padding poking out the bottom of her skirt she didn't show it. "oh!..uh.. Sowwy grandpa max!' Ben said, sniffling and bottom lip trembling now. "hey, it's ok. you'll remember it for next time right? And Gwen, be nice. " his gramps said and ruffled Ben's hair with the non spit hand. "W-whoa..so cute!" Peter said, blushing and getting a silly look on his face. "Yeah.. Gwen's adorable!" Jay said. "..Y-yeah Gwen.." Peter said and Jay went to say something but the grandpa had spotted them and called them over. "hey, you boys are in kindergarten right?" he asked. "Yup! K-2, with miss Anderson." Peter said. "Great! thats Ben and Gwen's class! Look, I'm running a little late..can you help these two get to class? and make sure Ms. Anderson gets their diaper bags?" he asked, handing Ben a light green one and Gwen a dark blue one, the kids giggling. "Yeah! we gotta make sure there are LOTS of diapies on hand for when we make boomies!" Giggled and then blew a raspberry. "Hehehe yeah! we're number one at going number two..though I'm WAY better at making stinkies then Benny!" Gwen said, puffing out her chest. "And here we go.." Max groaned, face palming. "Nuh-uh! I'm the best pooper!!!" Ben huffed and got in Gwen's face. "puh-lease, rabbit's poop more then you. and your stinky diapers are like, flowers! MINE are massive and make skunks go yuck!" "NO NO NO NO NO!! I poop way more and it's super bigg! Grandpa tell her!!" "Nooo I do! grandpa tell him!" And both dorks turned to their grandpa. "Oh gee, I'd LOVE to settle this, but your gonna be late for class!" Max said quickly, then turned to the boys. "Besides, your new friends haven't even introduced themselves!" The pair froze then blushed, looking ashamed. "Oh right.. Uh.. Sorry guys." Gwen said, rubbing the back of her head. "I'm Gwen!" She added, holding out her hand. "Yeah, sorry..and I'm Ben!" Ben said, doing like wise, his hand out to peter while Gwen's was out to jay. "Jay." the boy giggled, shaking Gwen's hand. "peter." He giggled, blushing while shaking Ben's. "Come on, we'll show you the way to class! And uh, don't worry, if anyone goes to tease you, we'll protect you! Right Jay?" "Uh..Uh..yeah! right!" "Hehehe Thanks! the kids in our old class were a bunch of dweebs who kept teasing us!" Gwen coo'ed. "Just couldn't handle how AWESOME we are." Ben said, smirking and rubbing a finger under his nose. "yes, that Must be it. "Max said. rolling his eyes. "you two have fun, I'll pick you up after school." "BYEEEE Gramps!" the two big babies called and waved bye bye to max, then followed their new friends into the school.

Getting into the classroom, Jay and peter were a little taken back by how unashamed the cousin's were, dashing around the class and introducing themselves (though thankfully without the argument over who was the super pooper this time.) They turned their diaper bags over to Miss Anderson who chuckled and then lead them to the table they would be sitting at, with some special chairs waiting for them that got a few complaints from the other students. "hey! How come THEY git chairs with sides!?!" Chad, a brown haired boy style in a mushroom cut asked, his bottom lip sticking out. "Yeah! I want sides too!" whined Mandy, a blond with twin pigtails, crossing her arms. "Kids, be nice, these are special chairs that Ben and Gwen need because with their..er.." And Miss Anderson paused, trying to think of the right way to phase it. "We need special seat cuz with our mega DIAPER butts, we fall out of normal chairs!" Ben said, cheerfully taking over and turning around and bending some, patting the back of his puffy butt. "Yeah, we're total big babies and while we can sorta learn, sitting in big kid chairs like you guys is totally beyond us. sooo.. Please don't be upset!" Gwen said, holding up her skirt and showing off her diapers as well. This instantly broke any tension and had ALL the kids giggling while Miss Anderson snorted and covered her mouth, trying to hide her smile. "Oh Ok! Sorry!" Chad said. "Do you need help getting in your baby seat?" Mandy asked. "I'll help them out kids, but thanks you for asking. and Gwen sweetie, please put your skirt down." She said.

With that settled it was time for class to start, and while most of the class was paying attention, Ben had out a crayon and was doodling on a sheet of paper, his tongue sticking out the side of his mouth while Gwen was drumming on her bottom lip with her index and middle finger. Jay and Peter, who were sitting on either side of them gently got the big babies attention, making Miss Anderson glad she didn't have to start off by calling the big babies out. "Alright class, let's start with some basic spelling today. who here can spell their own name?" She asked, knowing that while most of her students could, Gwen and ben might not be able to. Everyone raised their hand, though Ben and Gwen looked a little unsure as they did. "Gwen, ben, are you not sure?" She asked gently. "well Uh.. I can spell my first name.." Ben started, rubbing the back of his head. "And so can I.. it's the last name that gets all tricky ricky dicky." Gwen said, finishing his thought. "Well, why don't we all try and spell it together?" Miss Anderson asked, getting a blue marker for her whiteboard and standing by it. "And what IS your last name's?" she asked, knowing them but class interaction was the name of the game. "it's Tennyson." Ben coo'ed, kicking his legs gently. "Alright. let's sound it out, who would look to go first?" Miss Anderson asked. "Oh Oh Me me meeeee!" Gwen cried out, holding up her hand and waving it around and pushing up out of her baby seat. "heh. Ok Gwen. go ahead." "Tennyson! Q N T R O-" Gwen started, but was cut off to soft giggles from the class. "Nooo, but good enthusiasm! would anyone else like to try? Ben?" "uhhh.. nope, it took me ferever to learn how to spell my first name." he said blushing and squirming. "It's ok ben, lots of kids do!" Peter said quickly, patting Ben's arm and making the big baby cheer up. "Can I try?" Asked a mousey dirty blond with hockey hair and glasses, named Jim. "Of course Jim." Miss Anderson replied. "Tennyson: T E N N N Y S O N." He said, looking nervous. "That's correct Jim, good job!" Miss Anderson coo'ed, and the class cheered him, but the loudest cheers came from Gwen and ben. "Wow, he must be like, the SMARTEST kid in class!" Ben gushed. "..Not that smart.." Peter huffed. "huh?" ben asked, confused and not catching on Peter was jealous. "Nothing!" Peter squeaked, realizing he had spoken too loud. "So is he like a super duper speller?" Gwen asked jay. "well he's ok.. I'm better but I don't like to show off." Jay said, putting on a air of arrogance. "Ohhh Koolies!" Gwen coo'ed.

After the spelling lesson it was time for reading, which to the surprise of no one Ben and Gwen couldn't do either. Miss Anderson was quickly getting the feeling that while she had been told Ben and Gwen were ready for kindergarten that they were more fix to be in pre-school but had been turned down due to their ages. Still she would make the best of it and give it her all and who knew, maybe she could work a miracle. At least the class was fully behind the big babies, Having quickly taken them in as their little brother and sister and when it was clear that Ben and Gwen couldn't read Peter and Jay had taken them to a plush corner of the room for Kids to read if they had free time and read to them. Math time was semi better, at least as long as they didn't go over the number ten, since Ben and Gwen did all of their counting on their fingers, but it was something that miss Anderson could work with, having already started to put a modified lesson plan together for the cousins.

All and all, the day went well and the cousins were more then eager to come back tomorrow. The only slight hiccup in the day when it came to the class being kind and caring was shortly after lunch when the pair had loaded their diapers, and window had to be opened quickly. it didn't take long to discover that the plan to just change them in the classroom wasn't going to work out and so she'd had Jay and peter who seemed to have a sweet spot on the pair escort them down to the nurses office carrying the diaper bags with them, and escort them back after the fact. Gwen and Ben said sorry for stinking the class up and were quickly forgiven. Yeah, having two big babies in the class was going to be a little more challenging then she counted on, but as Miss Anderson watched then dash up and glomp their grandpa as he picked them out out the window, she couldn't help but think it was more then worth it for the trade off of the two cuties.

On special occasions when [Restaurant chain co-founder and self-made multi-millionaire Hiroe] Tanaka was a child, whenever someone asked her what food she wanted to eat, she’d always say kushikatsu. Her father, she says, realized what others didn’t: that cooking it is an art. The oil, batter and sauce all have to be just right. For years he used his downtime from working as a real estate agent to perfect kushikatsu for her, she says.

Then, when Tanaka was 21, her dad passed away.

As Tanaka went on with her life, doing administrative work at an advertising agency after deciding not to finish a university degree in literature, she tried without success to replicate her father’s kushikatsu. In the late 1990s, she took a job with [restaurant chain co-founder and company President Keiji] Nuki, who was running a bar in Osaka at the time, because she wanted to focus on cooking. One of the dishes she constantly tried to make was kushikatsu.

He found a small property in a quiet residential area outside central Tokyo, where rent was cheaper. He filled the kitchen with instruments from his old places, and whatever was missing he bought using an auction website. “A lot of people told me not to do it, that the place wouldn’t attract people because there weren’t any other shops nearby,” he says.

Tanaka wasn’t willing to quit. She even offered to borrow money for the business under her own name. But she accepted it was time to take a step back, and started to pack.

That’s when she found it. It was in a box of memos and mementos from her dad. He’d left her the secret of his kushikatsu after all.

Neither Tanaka nor Nuki had any expectations for the scrawled instructions, which had been corrected over and over. “The discovery wasn’t dramatic at all,” Nuki recalls. “It’s not like the memo had ‘success guaranteed’ written on it.”

But they tried it and it worked. “It was, indeed, the taste of the kushikatsu my father used to cook,” Tanaka says.

Nuki, a newfound kushikatsu fan, decided to make one last attempt to conquer the Tokyo restaurant scene.

But the Tanaka kushikatsu went viral.

People were lined up to get in even at 1 a.m. Nuki had to set up extra tables outside. The number of bicycles parked outside the shop drew complaints from neighbors. Passengers on buses stared with curiosity at the long lines.

Nuki and Tanaka added a second and third store. They all bustled with customers. When a rival kushikatsu joint opened in the trendy Shibuya area of Tokyo, the two decided it was time to turn their business into a franchise. (x)

Rain Boots and Puppy Paws

Pairing: Ezra (Prospect)/Reader

When Ezra and Cee returned to some kind of normal, Ezra didn’t expect Cee to be begging him for a puppy. But he’s a huge sucker, despite not being a pets kind of person. He is, however, a flirt, and his newest target is the cute trainer who exercises the dogs.

“Please?” Cee begged. She’d been trying all sorts of tactics to get Ezra to say yes to looking at dogs, and so far, nothing was working.

“I’ve told you a thousand times now little bird, we are not getting a dog,” he said. “We are currently preoccupied with recovery.”

Cee pouted. “A dog could help!” She said eagerly, leaning across the table so her cold fingers touched Ezra’s hand. “If we got a service dog it could help you with your arm!”

Ezra huffed. “I’ll consider it.”

Immediately, Cee was up, happily taking a lap around the kitchen and racing off to her room. Ezra chuckled, watching her go. It had been a little over a year since he’d been appointed her official guardian after almost a year and a half of various legal battles, and she’d bloomed so much under his haphazard care. They’d settled down on a small Earth-like planet with air that was, thankfully, breathable and not toxic. In that year, Cee had started attending school while Ezra worked from home, creating a nice pattern for them. Cee was no longer sullen and silent, although she had her days, just like Ezra, when the past caught up to her. For the most part, however, they were a happy semi-functional found family.

Ezra sighed, grabbing his tablet and unlocking it. Setting it on the table, he one-handedly typed in a search for good dog breeds.

Three days later, he gave in to Cee’s begging.

“Fine!” He said, smiling when Cee bugged him about it again. “We can look at dogs! But, little bird, if we get one, it will be your responsibility.”

If Ezra though Cee got excited when he said he’d think about it, then this was pure joy. She bounded around the table and hugged him, smiling. “Did you see any you liked?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Ezra said with a grin.

Cee snorted, settling back down at her seat. “You always do your research before making a decision,” she said. “Did you see any you liked?”

Ezra shrugged, stabbing the unidentifiable meat on his plate with his fork. “I saw some with promise,” he finally said. “And there’s a shelter in town we can visit.”

“Tomorrow?”

Ezra chuckled. “Hold your horses little bird. We can go this weekend.”

Of course, in the time it took to reach the weekend, Cee and Ezra did extensive research. They both agreed an overly fluffy dog would be a bad idea, even if Cee fell in love with the husky puppies. A small dog wasn’t ideal in any way, but neither was a huge one. Some breeds weren’t good for what they needed, and some came down entirely to personal preference.

“We’ll just have to see what they’ve got,” Cee said finally on Friday night. “I still think a german shepherd is a good idea,”

“And I still don’t want a dog that will shed a fuck ton,” Ezra finished, shutting his tablet down for the night. “Go get some rest. We’re leaving early tomorrow.”

As Cee ran off to go get ready for bed, Ezra cleared the table off, leaving the dirty dishes in the sink. He couldn’t really do the dishes with one hand, so Cee did them whenever she got the chance.

Ezra went to bed that night anxious. He’d never been a pets person, despite having the faintest memories of a cat when he was little. Especially with how his dreams were plagued by the Green and his right arm stump still hurt and ached with phantom pains, he wasn’t sure if a dog was the right thing right now.

And then he thought about Cee, and how happy she had been when he’d agreed to look at dogs. This would be good for her, to have a lively animal running around instead of his lazy ass.

The sun rose early, shining brightly through the blinds and waking Ezra. He rolled over, rubbing his face and beginning to slowly stumble through his morning routine.

Cee passed by the open bathroom door as Ezra smeared a numbing cream on his stump, pausing and watching with nothing short of immense guilt on her face as he winced while rubbing over a tender spot.

“Good morning little bird,” he said, not pausing in his action or turning from his reflection in the mirror. “Haven’t I taught you that staring is rude?”

Cee jumped, her guilt turning to surprise. “Sorry.”

“It’s okay.” Ezra ran the sink and pushed his hand under the water, wincing at the heat. “Are you almost ready to go?”

“Yeah,” Cee mumbled, reaching around Ezra to grab her hairbrush. “Are you?”

Ezra nodded. “Just need a shirt, then we can head out.”

They left not long after that, taking the train into the city. Ezra stood so Cee could sit, her eagerness returning with every passing minute.

“Have you decided on a breed yet?” She asked when they stepped off the train, the twin suns warming their skin.

“Not yet,” Ezra said, locating the small shelter. “It depends on what they have.”

Immediately, upon walking in, Ezra and Cee were met with animals of all shapes and sizes. Cee lit up, seeing a litter of puppies snuggled up next to their mother. “Ezra,” she said happily. “Thank you.”

Ezra smiled. “You’re welcome little bird.”

They spoke briefly to a receptionist, who took them to see the dogs.

“We have a bunch of different breeds,” she explained, gesturing to rows of kennels. “If you want, some of our dogs are out back with one of our trainers.”

Cee thanked the receptionist before heading down one of the aisles, cheerfully greeting every dog she saw. Ezra trailed behind her, making a mental note whenever he saw a dog he liked.

“What about this one?” Cee asked, pointing to a black and white dog that looked like a skinny panda with really short fur.

“What’s the breed?”

Cee squinted at the card. “She’s a one year old whippet.”

“A what?”

“Whippet,” Cee repeated. “Remember? We looked at a few. They’re like greyhounds but smaller.”

Ezra shrugged. “I like her. Let’s see what else we can see, but keep her in mind.”

They eventually headed out back, where a figure was chasing around a bunch of greyhounds, happily shouting to the pack to give back the frisbee they’d stolen.

As soon as they turned, giving Ezra a clear view of their face, he stopped short. Oh fuck. They were goddamn beautiful.

You laughed, grabbing the red rubber frisbee from TomTom, giving it a tug before commanding the dog to drop it. He did, allowing you to fling the frisbee across the yard, sending all five greyhounds chasing after it. As you watched them go, you realized you weren’t alone.

“Hey!” You waved, gesturing the two people closer. “Are y’all looking for a dog?”

The younger girl nodded, grabbing the older man’s hand and pulling him closer. “Yeah! What breed are these?”

You gestured to the dogs, who were now wresting for the frisbee. “Greyhounds. Fast as hell for all of fifteen minutes before they become the biggest couch potatoes.”

The girl introduced herself and who you assumed was her father until she called him by his name. He was handsome in a way you couldn’t describe, a way that made you pause and think about every word you spoke to him. A way that made you think you were in love.

“Can I go play with the dogs?” Cee asked, nudging Ezra’s side.

“Yeah,” he said. “Be careful little bird. And do not get horribly attached.”

Cee nodded and ran off, joining the fray as she tried to take the frisbee.

You turned to Ezra. “She’s a wonderful kid,” you commented loosely.

Ezra blinked a few times, eyes on Cee. “She’s not mine. At least, not by blood.”

Ah. That explained a lot. You shuffled, smiling at the dogs and Cee playing. “How long has she been begging?”

“Hm?”

“How long has she been begging for a dog?” You repeated. “You don’t seem all that interested in this.”

Ezra smiled. “A while. Keeps insisting it’ll be good for me.” He gestured to his right arm, or lack thereof. “I guess I finally just gave in.”

You laughed. “I hate to agree, but a dog would help.”

“Mhm,” Ezra hummed, nodding. “Okay, traitor.”

Before you could respond, the frisbee whizzed past your head, along with five very eager dogs chasing after it. They crashed into you and Ezra, sending you toppling to the ground, him landing squarely on top of you.

“Oh shit!” Cee shouted, racing over and helping Ezra sit up so you could also straighten. “Are you okay?”

Both of you nodded, immediately becoming targets for the dogs. They circled around, sniffing and licking, causing you to giggle.

“TomTom! Nuki! Georgia! That’s enough!” You laughed, shoving Georgia off you. She snorted and instead decided that licking Ezra’s entire face was a good idea.

Cee smiled. “I think she likes you.”

Ezra made a face beneath Georgia’s tongue, causing you to laugh again. “Georgia, hon, leave Ez alone.”

Georgia, thankfully, stopped licking Ezra’s face. Of course, she decided that instead, she wanted to plop herself down in Ezra’s lap, which was exactly what she did.

“They’re lovebugs,” you said, scratching behind Georgia’s ears. “Greyhounds are people dogs, and it shows.”

Cee smiled, reaching out and giving Juliet, who had collapsed on your leg, a few scritches. “Are any of them up for adoption?”

“Well.” You thought it over, trying to remember. “TomTom was claimed last week, we’re waiting to hear back from Juliet’s forever family, Nuki is going home tomorrow, but Georgia and Julek are both available.”

Julek, who had been settled in the grass, heard his name and wandered over, sniffing around your ears.

“Yes, you’re a good boy,” you said happily, petting Julek. “But if you wanna adopt Julek, I have to tell you he’s super attached to this one cat we have, so they’re a package deal.”

Ezra gave Cee a pointed look. “We’re only getting one.”

Cee nodded. “That’s okay. I think I want Georgia.”

They ended up leaving with Georgia’s paperwork and a promise to come back for her next weekend. She barked at them as they left, and you laughed. “Georgia, honey, they’re coming back for you,” you promised.

Your promise held true, as seven days later, Cee and Ezra eagerly came back for their dog.

“That should be it,” you said, checking over the paperwork. “Georgia is officially your dog.”

Cee smiled, bending down to give Georgia a kiss.

You passed the paperwork back over to Ezra. “Keep that somewhere safe. If you need to train her, call this number here.” You pointed to a phone number on a business card. “This number is the vet service we use, and it’s really close by. And that number is the one for the here, in case anything goes horribly wrong.” As you explained, you walked them to the door, until the three of you were standing outside in the warm sun.

“What about that one?” Ezra pointed to a plain business card with a handwritten phone number on it.

You smiled. “That’s my number.”

Before you could elaborate, the train pulled up, meaning Cee and Ezra had to leave.

“Call me!” You shouted across the platform, waving to Ezra.

He waved back, giving you a thumbs up before disappearing onto the train.

You didn’t have to wait long for the call. As soon as you walked back into the shelter, your phone rang. You answered the call, stomach twisting in knots. “Hello?”

“Hey.”

You smiled, hearing Ezra’s voice, albeit a bit tinny. “You called fast.”

“I had a question that just couldn’t wait,” Ezra said, the sound of the train chime interrupting him.

“And what would that question be?” You asked, opening the door to the shelter with your hip and settling down at your desk.

“I’m off on Wednesday and was wondering if you wanted to go somewhere with me?”

You laughed. “Ezra, are you asking me out?” You teased, despite knowing this was exactly what was going to happen when you picked up the phone.

“Yes I am.”

“Well,” you fiddled with your pen, already writing the date in your calendar. “How does five sound? We can get dinner.”

Ezra paused, as if he didn’t expect to get this far. “Five sounds fine.”

“Then it’s a date.”

“Yeah,” Ezra agreed. “It’s a date.”

Nampō Roku, Book 6 (11.2, part 3): the Details of the Go-daisu-sho [御臺子所] in Ashikaga Yoshimasa's Shoin.

11.2 continued) [The arrangement of the room] was just as [illustrated] previously¹.

As for further details related to this sketch that was in [Ri]kyū's possession², here will be [added certain] comments that relate [specifically] to the go-daisu-sho³:

◦ On occasions when the daisu will be displayed, [the members of the court] will descend onto the mats that were spread out in rows on the lower level, as shown [in the sketch], and there partake of the tea.

◦ Speaking of the mo-biki [no] ōdo, one panel of this door is opened, and the tea utensils are carried [to a place] just outside of [this door], where two yoryūdo [寄人] are stationed⁵ for the duration [of the service] -- to receive and take charge of the tea utensils.

◦ At this time, the official who will be in charge of [preparing and serving]⁷ the tea should lower the ties that bind [the legs of] his hakama [from above the calves to a point just above his ankles]⁸; and, if an enclosure is provided at the edge of the veranda for ablutions, he should wash his hands⁹. After doing so, he receives the utensils [from the yoryūdo] and carries them to the daisu.

◦ On the other hand, if, on this occasion, the arrangement requires nothing to be carried, then, after lowering the kuguri, and washing his hands, [he] approaches the daisu just as he is¹⁰.

◦ Also, if the place for washing the hands can be seen from the lord’s seat, [the person who will prepare the tea] should be careful to behave appropriately¹¹. And all the more so when serving [the tea], [one] must know what is appropriate¹².

◦ From the [mo-biki] ō-do to the daisu is [a distance of] more than 3-ken¹³. The way that one carries ones mo [裳], ones footing, the foot with which one steps through the ō-do, an understanding of what is auspicious and inauspicious, and so on: the way to do all of these things is very strictly defined¹⁴.

◎ This final section deals with certain rules of deportment that it is essential for the person who will be serving tea in this setting to adhere. While I have divided the list into individual points (for the sake of clarity), in the original this passage is written as a single unit, with minimal punctuation.

Rather than being points extracted from an otherwise unknown document in Rikyū’s possession, this material seems to be excerpted from the rules for the service of the shōgun, that were issued by the Tokugawa bakufu (the language is as of a code of rules, rather than a narrative that would accompany an illustration). For the reader’s convenience, a simplified sketch of the shoin has been added, below.

The nobleman would be seated on the o-age-datami [御上疊], a raised platform on which two tatami mats were placed. Other guests (or, more likely, the nobleman’s attendants) would presumably be seated on the mats of the veranda room in which the daisu had been set up.

Two yoryūdo [寄人] (assistants) would be stationed outside of the mo-biki no ō-do [裳引ノ大戸], to assist the person who would be serving tea -- by handing him utensils that had to be carried out into the room, or to receive from him things like the koboshi, so they could be taken out to the mizuya.

After preparing himself, the cha-sahai [茶差配] (the person charged with performing the temae) would enter through the mo-biki no ō-do and walk the length of the veranda room*, to take his seat in front of the daisu. ___________ *The veranda was covered with 12 tatami mats, arranged in four rows of three. According to other period texts, this person would walk across the lower three rows of mats, and then sit down on the far end of the daisu-tatami. He would advance toward the daisu on his knees.

¹Ō-yō migi no gotoshi [大ヤウ右ノゴトシ].

Literally, “[it is] wholly as on the right.”

The original was written from right to left, as usual, and the drawing was positioned between the two blocks of text. The remarks translated in this post are found to the left of the sketch.

²Kyū shoji no sō-zu ha nao kuwashi [休所持ノ惣圖ハ猶委].

Kyū [休] is the usual abbreviation of the name that Rikyū was using during the last five years or so of his life. It is unclear when this particular incident was supposed to have occurred (though “Rikyū” was, of course, the name best known to the chajin of the Edo period).

Nao kuwashi [猶委し]: nao [猶] means still, more, further, additional; kuwashi [委し = 詳し] seems to mean details, particulars*. In other words, additional details (on how tea was served in this room) will be presented in the passage that follows†.

The author appears to be intent of solidifying the connection between Rikyū and this sketch, and the various details that will follow. __________ *The word is usually used in the adjectival form kuwashii [詳しい, 詳しい] today, which means detailed. The noun form, “details,” is kuwashii-koto [詳しいこと] -- in the modern language.

†The implication is that Rikyū was in possession of a secret document (something along the lines of the O-kazari ki [御飾記]); though, for that reason, he is being careful only to share carefully selected passages with Nambō Sōkei, only those that will throw some light onto the way in which this kind of room was used.

In fact, this seems to narrate details of the way that tea was served at the Tokugawa court (which is exactly the point -- to make it seem that the Tokugawa system was a direct extension of the earlier bakufu, of which the best documented, in cultural terms, was the court of Ashikaga Yoshimasa).

³Kore ha go-daisu-sho made no kaki-nuki nari [コレハ御臺子所マデノ書拔ナリ].

Kaki-nuki [書拔] means an excerpt, extract, or selected remarks. The implication seems to be that the document purportedly owned by Rikyū contained additional details that will not be quoted -- the author's intention being to limit these remarks very specifically to the particulars related to the go-daisu-sho.

⁴Go-daisu kazareruru toki ha, zu no gotoku ge-dan no kasane-tatami ni ide tamahite o-cha mesareshi to nari [御臺子カザラルヽ時ハ、圖ノ如ク下段ノカサネ畳ニ出玉ヒテ御茶メサレシト也].

Kasane-tatami [重疊] means tatami mats spread out row after row (as was illustrated in footnote 14 of the previous post).

⁵Yoryūdo futari koko ni arite [寄人二人コヽニ在テ].

A yoryūdo [寄人] is a sort of assistant, a low-level functionary who can be asked to perform various menial tasks. Persons of this sort were employed at the Imperial court, as well as in the shōgun's offices and residences.

In this case, their job would be to keep watch over the utensils that were deposited on the outside of the mo-biki ōdo, as well as assist the person who was performing the temae -- doing things such as taking the koboshi to the mizuya, to be emptied, and then returning it to the host so that he could restore it on the daisu at the end of the temae.

⁶Shibaraku o-chagu wo uketorite motsu [シバラク御茶具ヲ受取テモツ].

Shibaraku [暫く] means for the time being, for the duration. In other words, while tea is being served.

Ukitorite motsu [受取て持つ]: uketoru [受け取る] means “to receive (the tea utensils);” and motsu [持つ], “to hold” -- in this case, having the nuance of taking charge of (the utensils).

The two yoryūdo receive the utensils (from the person conveying them from the mizuya; and, later, from the host, when he brings things back from the daisu).

⁷Cha-sahai no hito [茶差配ノ人].

This is the title* of the person whose job is to perform the temae at the daisu.

This designation (which probably referred to one of the dōbō-shū [同朋衆] at Yoshimasa's court) would not be used of Yoshimasa were preparing the tea with his own hands. __________ *If the person performing the temae was, indeed, one of the dōbō, then the title would presumably be temporary -- indicating the person who had been ordered to prepare the tea.

⁸Hakama no kuguri wo oroshi [袴ノクヲヲロシ].

A kuguri-bakama [括り袴]* is a kind of split-legged hakama that has a drawstring inserted into a hem that runs around the lower edge of each leg. The ends of the drawstring protrude through a pair of holes located on the inner side of the legs, as shown below.

Depending on the activity in which the wearer would be involved, the hakama could either be tied “high” (just below the knees, above the calves), or “low” (at the narrow point of the lower leg, just above the ankles).

Since the cha-sahai will be performing the temae seated in seiza, the tie is lowered to the ankle, so it will not restrict the flow of blood to the lower legs (as it might when tied just below the knees).

In all but the Enkaku-ji version of the text, the first wo [ヲ] (which functions as the particle that indicates the direct object) is missing. __________ *Or kuguri-o no hakama [括り緒の袴].

Korean traditional trousers are also tied to the legs in this way -- though, at least in the present day, this is done using ribands that are not attached to the garment.

⁹Sono en ni aru o-chōzu-gamae ni te chōzu wo shite [其緣ニアル御手水ガマへニテ手水ヲシテ].

O-chōzu-gamae [御手水構] refers to the installation of a chōzu-bachi [手水鉢] at the edge of the veranda. Sometimes the user must descend down an incline to make use of the basin, and sometimes the person may sit or squat down on the veranda, allowing the wash water to spill down between the front edge of the basin and the edge of the veranda. There is no actual indication of what form the o-chōzu-gamae took at Yoshimasa’s shoin, though possibly the latter might be implied.

A wall or other sort of screen* was sometimes erected around the chōzu-bachi in order to hide the ablutions from the sight of other people in the area (since part of the process consisted of rinsing out the mouth), though this screen is not always present. __________ *Kamae [構] usually means a structure or construction that encloses something. Though it can also be used to mean “arrangement” -- the way something is arranged (in other words, in this case, whether the chōzu-bachi adjoins the veranda, or is separated far enough that the person who wishes to make use of it is required to descend to ground level).

¹⁰Mata hakobi-mono naki kazari no toki ha, kuguri wo oroshi, chōzu-shite sono-mama daisu [h]e kakaru nari [又運ビ物ナキカサリノ時ハ、クヽリヲヲロシ、手水シテ其マヽ臺子ヘカヽルナリ].

Hakobi-mono naki kazari [運び物なき飾] means an arrangement that requires nothing to be carried out from the preparation area. For example, an arrangement where the chakin, chasen, and chashaku have been arranged in the dai-temmoku, which is displayed on the ten-ita together with the chaire.

Kuguri wo oroshi [括りを下ろし]: kuguri [括り] refers to the cords that tie the lower ends of the legs of the hakama to the wearer’s legs; oroshi [下ろし] means to lower -- see footnote 8.

Chōzu suru [手水する] means to wash ones hands; perform ones ablutions.

Sono-mama daisu [h]e kakaru [其の儘臺子へ掛かる]: sono-mama [其の儘] means as [he] is, the way [he] is, without change -- that is, without picking up or doing anything else (after washing the hands); daisu [h]e kakaru [臺子へ掛かる] means “[he] sets out for” (or, perhaps, “arrives at”) “the daisu.”

¹¹Chōzu no tokoro mo gozen yori miyuru yue, sono kokoro-e aru-beshi [手水ノ所モ御前ヨリ見ユルユヘ、其心得アルベシ].

Gozen [御前] more literally means "the presence."

Sono kokoro-e aru-beshi [其の心得あるべし] actually means “(you) should be aware of that.”

¹²Sara-sara to tsukau kokoro-e shikaru-beki to nari [サラ〰トツカフ心得可然トナリ].

Sara-sara [更々] means more and more, all the more.

Tsukau [使う] means to handle, manage, perform (the temae). Hence, “serving [the tea].”

Kokoro-e shikaru-beki to [心得然るべきと] means “to know what is appropriate.”

Both Shibayama Fugen and Tanaka Senshō give this sentence as sara-sara to tsukau kokoro-e shikaru-beki-koto nari [サラ〰トツカフ心得可然事ナリ], which means “all the more, when handling the utensils], it is a matter of knowing what is appropriate” (rather than “...[one] must know what is appropriate,” as in the Enkaku-ji manuscript). Ultimately, the meaning is very similar.

¹³Daisu made ō-do yori san-ken yo [臺子マデ大戸ヨリ三間余].

San-ken yo [三間余]: san-ken [三間] is equivalent to 18-shaku; yo [余] means “more than,” “over.”

As mentioned above, the mats in the room were arranged in four rows of three, and the cha-sahai (the person who would perform the temae) would walk across the lower three rows of mats, and sit down on the far end of the daisu-tatami. He would then advance toward the daisu on his knees. This means that he would walk a distance of 3-ken after he stepped across the threshold of the mo-biki ō-do.

The word yo [余] could be taken to suggest that the intended meaning is that the cha-sahai walks onto the daisu-tatami, and lowers himself directly into the seat he will occupy during the temae. If this is the preferred interpretation of the significance of yo, then this statement is further evidence that these passages were written around the middle of the first century of the Edo period -- when the way one entered the room and approached the daisu was based on Sōtan’s way of doing things.

¹⁴Mo no hiki-yō, ashi no hakobi, ō-do [h]e iri-toki no ashi, kikkyō no kokoroe nado, mina sahō genjū nari [裳ノ引ヤウ、足ノハコビ、大戸ヘ入時ノ足、吉凶ノ心得等、ミナ作法嚴重也].

Mo no hiki-yō [裳の引様] means “the way that the mo is carried” -- that is, it is at this point, just before entering the room, that the mo* is carefully tied on to the waist, so that it will flair outward and extend backwards in a straight line.

Ashi no hakobi [足の運び] refers to the correct way to walk across the length of each mat (so that one always crosses onto the next mat with the same foot)†.

Ō-do [h]e iri-toki no ashi [大戸ヘ入時の足] means the foot with which one crosses the threshold when entering through the ō-do‡.

Kikkyō no kokoroe [吉凶の心得など]: kikkyō [吉凶] means “good fortune and bad fortune;” kokoro-e [心得] means to understand, to know. Doing certain things will be appropriate to a given occasion, while doing them in the opposite way would be inauspicious. Thus is it not just a matter of knowing which is which, but of understanding which is most appropriate on the present occasion.

Mina sahō genjū nari [皆作法嚴重なり]: mina [皆] means “everything,” “all of these (things),” “in every situation;” sahō [作法] refers to manners, the correct way to do something; genjū [嚴重] means things like stringent, rigorous, hard-and-fast, strict -- here referring to the rules of correct deportment. Especially when performing before a nobleman, one must be especially careful to perform each and every action correctly. In this setting, there is no room for mistakes or missteps. __________ *The mo is a formal train (of white gauze) which indicates that the wearer is of lower rank than the people being attended. The meaning of the phrase is that one must be careful (from this point onward) that the mo extends backwards in a straight line, and not be wrinkled or off-center.

No mention is made (and, in fact, it is very unlikely) that women ever served tea to Yoshimasa. The conventions, however, had changed drastically by the Edo period.

†This is something that beginners also study during their wari-geiko phase of training for chanoyu -- and something to which everyone must always pay attention.

‡In chanoyu, for example, one of the major schools states that a person should cross the threshold of the sadō-guchi with the left foot; another school teaches that this should be done with the right foot.

Rikyū, on the other hand, taught that one should cross with the foot on the side closest to the wall that adjoins the sadō-guchi.
