BMG is backing a new Lewis Capaldi documentary. Do you think they are doing the same for the one Louis is making?
https://bmg.com/de/news/BMG-partners-with-Pulse-Quickfire-Films-Lewis-Capaldi-for-new-documentary-film.html
Very interesting!
BMG has partnered with Pulse and Quickfire Films and multi-Platinum, two-time BRIT Award-winning, Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi for his debut feature-length documentary film.
BMG is the long-time music publisher of Capaldi’s songs including his 2019 breakthrough hit ‘Someone You Loved’ which topped the UK Official Singles chart for seven weeks, and held the Number One spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. Capaldi’s debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent is also a critical and commercial smash and has amassed over 15 billion streams worldwide.
Filmed over a five-year period, the film by BAFTA-winning director Joe Pearlman (Bros: After The Screaming Stops) captures the 24-year-old singer-songwriter’s defining year as he becomes one of the biggest stars on the planet, delivering an intimate portrait of his unique character, hopes, and fears in his own words.
Alistair Norbury, President Repertoire & Marketing BMG UK, said, ”We are delighted to help bring this project to life with Lewis and of course Pulse and Quickfire Films. As well as a great songwriter and musician, Lewis is a compelling character who has a genuine and deep connection with fans. This release further demonstrates our commitment to support artists across every service area from records to publishing, film to books, neighboring rights and increasingly artist management and live too.”
Independent Entertainment will be representing the production at the forthcoming Cannes Virtual Film Market.
The documentary is the latest project in BMG’s fast-growing line of music-related films and television projects including the critically acclaimed David Crosby: Remember My Name; the Joan Jett documentary, Bad Reputation; Mavericks: The Legendary Promoters of Rock, a film about legendary concert promoters and the early days of the live music business; Rudeboy: The Story of Trojan Record, Echo In The Canyon, one of the top-grossing documentaries of 2019; and the forthcoming They All Came Out To Montreux, a definitive three-part documentary series celebrating the history of the Montreux Jazz Festival.
I think the trend of everyone jumping on to documentaries has produced some uneven results. As much as I want to see Louis, it feels a little premature to see a documentary on someone who doesn’t have a long solo music history (I feel the same way about Lewis Capaldi, frankly). I know that these documentaries are meant to promote and sell the artist, but a bland/ boring film with an insufficient character arc, or no new information, sort of backfires.
