I've been thinking about this page A LOT lately and I kinda want to do a series of drawings with OA in each season I love that in the manga, after Oscar and Andre become lovers, all the time they spent together is still considered as significant as these short moments they're together ~romantically~ Oh the essays I'd write if I were good with words

Andre slander (rose of versailles) is 100% tolerated and encouraged. He was boring at best most of the show and then at the end when he did You Know What and then was just like "oh.. Damn idk what got into me sorry. Won't do it again".

André dumped his drink in Girodelle’s face when Girodelle suggested he take Oscar for a wife & allow her to keep André as “a servant [...] who yearns for her” in his home. André fell crying in the dirt because he can’t present himself as a suitor to Oscar, because he isn’t noble.
Tumblr media
Andre wants to be with her honestly and openly, not be a dirty little secret or watch her marry another man (“Did God leave me with this one eye to see that?! Just to see you become another man’s?!”)... but cannot, due to his lesser status in society. Oscar's father is his master, too...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even when Oscar’s father allowed it (wistfully and reluctantly, "If only you were a noble…"), their marriage was still only in secret.
Nobility need royal permission to marry commoners, it seems, and this is touched upon in the story of Oscar's parents (when the General believed his wife-to-be was only a commoner, rather than a poorer noble), and Osar's a renegade… but, their household considered them married and Oscar told others on the battlefield that they were married. She even seemed to think that when the revolution was over, they'd officially be married.
Tumblr media
... it was not to be, alas. Even if it isn't official, Oscar and Andre consider themselves a married couple.

Just realized who Limerick reminds me of...
Tumblr media
Jeanne and Limerick both fall into the genre of character where its like "I don't like you because you're kind of the worst BUT you're written in an interesting and compelling way so I want to see where this goes."
Jeanne my beloved but also my detested??? She's a girlboss and also like a wife to me. Idc if she would stab me...Unlike Limerick who I legitimately just Hate.
Something something it's easier to get behind Jeanne’s motives of wanting nice things/never being satisfied with where she is vs Limerick who starts with the motive of wanting Recognition but then veers into doing it for One Man’s attention specifically, and that's where she loses me. It's also a little about The Struggle. I experience a similar thing with Chosen One characters where they can have immense power but it has to feel like They Earned It. Jeanne lived a tumultuous life in Paris and worked for Every Scrap of Everything she ever Got vs Limerick who grew up with everything handed to her. Not to mention Jeanne to some degree cared for Rosalie and her mother, even though she tried to pretend she didn't. Limerick truly and sincerely doesn't.
Anyways I love unintentional character parallels...

Transmasculinity and queer sexuality in the works of Ikeda Riyoko
Tumblr media
Content Warning: Discussion of transphobia and suicide
Spoilers for Dear Brother, The Rose of Versailles, and Claudine
Ikeda Riyoko—perhaps the most famous member of the “year 24 group” that played a large part in creating the foundations of the shoujo manga genre—is often credited with laying the groundwork for depictions of queer characters in shoujo, and in particular with creating the archetype of the gender-bending heartthrob heroine, or “girl prince.” Building on earlier representations of butch or transmasculine characters in early shoujo manga such as Princess Knight, and the Takarazuka theater tradition of the otokoyaku male role actor, Ikeda’s enormously popular gender non-conforming heroes—Lady Oscar from The Rose of Versailles, Rei from Dear Brother, Julius from the Window of Orpheus, and the titular character of Claudine—helped to establish that there was a major mainstream audience excited to cheer for a hotheaded, androgynous tomboy with a heart of gold. Lady Oscar in particular has fingerprints all over the history of anime and manga, from a gender-bending cameo in Pokémon to serving as the inspiration for iconic characters like Tenjou Utena.
When I first read The Rose of Versailles last year, I expected its depictions of queer and transmasculine characters to be somewhat limited—after all, the comic was written for mainstream audiences and a mainstream publisher in the 1970s. But across Ikeda’s work, I was deeply surprised with the level of care and nuance with which Ikeda approaches transmasculine love stories. While there is obviously a lot about Ikeda’s portrayal of transmasculine characters that feels dated to modern audiences (for example, her comics often do fall back on “biological” ideas of women’s weakness and emotionality, and sometimes psychologize her character’s genders in uncomfortable ways), I was surprised by how much of these comics still hit for me today. What makes them work for me is both the extreme pathos with which Ikeda writes transmasculine character’s experiences of rejection—and, at rare moments, gender euphoria —but also the fact that her trans characters are not simply given a one-size fits all born-in-the-wrong-body narrative. Instead, they are each portrayed as unique individuals with varied personal relationships to their gender, their sexuality, and the historical context of the society they live in.

Best Underrated Anime Group B Round 3: #B8 vs #B2
#B8: Middle school idol drama
#B2: Girls aiming to become top stars in a Takarazuka high-school
Details and poll under the cut!
*#B2’s tagline has been changed.
Tumblr media
#B8: Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live
youtube
Summary:
Naru Ayase is an 8th grader who can see the colors of music when she listens to it. For Naru, who is extremely good at decorating, becoming the owner of a shop like Dear Crown was her dream. One day, she finds out that the manager of a newly-opened shop is recruiting middle school girls who can do Prism Dance, and immediately applies. Naru begins to Prism Dance at the audition, and an aura she’s never experienced spreads out in front of her. At that moment, a mysterious girl named Rinne asks her if she can see “rainbow music.”
Propaganda:
WHERE DO I START.
First off: Lesbian activities. Ayase Naru and Rinne Amagi are very close friends and even end up living together. Naru is also only one of the few characters without a proper love interest which really helps further the Naru/Rinne ship.
Otoha Takanashi: often talks about fairy tales, but the only characters she ever sees as Princes are women. Baby lesbian, I love her.
Second: DRAMA. So two of the characters (Ito and Kouji) actually start dating, but their parents do not approve for reasons they are evasive about until it is later revealed in the story—[This part of the propaganda has been cut by admin due to possible spoilers]
Third: banger music. This series includes many covers of popular 90s dance tracks from band TRF, which I am fond of. It also has a lot of unique music written for the show itself which is also good, especially for a children’s show.
Trigger Warnings: It might need the emotional abuse tag for specifically one of the characters’ parents, who is a pretty extreme perfectionist when it comes to her daughter. But nothing else aside from that. It’s a kids’ show, so it never goes that far in terms of actual harm. Most things also get resolved peacefully.

#B2: Kageki Shoujo!!
youtube
Summary:
After being forced to graduate from JPX48 following a controversial incident with a male fan, Ai Narata swears to never interact with another man ever again. Using her talents and strong desire to get away from men, Ai auditions for the exclusive all-female Kouka School of Musical and Theatrical Arts. The school is renowned for producing the best actresses that go on to perform in the famous all-female Kouka Theatre Troupe. Coming from the idol industry, Ai is the perfect candidate for the school’s hundredth generation class, but her aloof demeanor alienates her from her classmates. The eccentric Sarasa Watanabe is the only person who wishes to become Ai’s friend. She enters Kouka with the goal of becoming a top “otokoyaku” performer—an actress that plays traditionally male roles. After seeing a Kouka performance of The Rose of Versailles when she was younger, Sarasa dreams of performing as Lady Oscar one day. Unfortunately, Sarasa's inability to read a room causes friction between her and her classmates, including Ai, who reluctantly becomes her roommate and partner in many of their classes. Succeeding at Kouka will involve more than just raw talent for these young girls as jealousy, deceit, and the harsh realities of show business put their mental fortitude to the test. Will Sarasa and Ai be able to rise to the top and stand on the silver bridge?
Propaganda:
If theatre setting/schools is your thing, you’re probably going to love this series! We follow our protagonists and their schoolmates following their dreams to become actresses for the prestigious Kouka Revue. Not an easy road as they will have to face and overcome many challenges, the hardest ones coming from themselves. Indeed, the story is not afraid to address sensitive topics and their resulting traumas (see TW list) always rightfully handed. These episodes may be a bit hard to see if you’re sensitive to these topics, but the show never leaves you in discomfort: everything is properly addressed, and characters are cared for realistically.
The characters are all very well-written, portraying individuals with way more depth than they may appear at first glance. We follow their growth—or its start—during the series. Sarasa is a walking sunbeam, and her blooming friendship with the withdrawn Ai is a delight to watch. We learn to know—and love—all their classmates as well, as episodes switch focus to one or the other.
The OST is really good, with a catchy opening, and no less than five different versions of the ending song, a fabulous duet voiced by the cast! The animation features really pretty art with iconic details like the stars in Sarasa’s eyes. The series is a homage to Takarazuka and scatter references to famous real-life Revues and older famous shôujo manga series like “Versailles no Bara” or “Glass no Kamen”. Actually, it feels like a modernized version of their essence: roses, sparkles, spotlight, drama, all while staying safe!
This anime is like candy for eyes and soul, and I really hope we'll get a season 2 to explore the girls' voices further!
Trigger Warnings: Child Abuse, Pedophilia, Self-Harm
Nothing is too graphical nor explicit, just the right amount to let the unsettling situations be clear enough to watchers, and they’re always addressed correctly.
Child abuse/ Pedophilia: episode 3 (+4), about Ai’s traumas
Self-harm: episode 5 focuses on a girl with an eating disorder, forcing herself to vomit (not sure if that really counts as TW?)

Also another question. What would you say to do when it comes to a homage without spoiling Re:Creators?
I really want to watch Re:Creators so I avoided your spoiler segment but also I know there was some valuable info on homages on there, so say like, for She-ra’s “homage” to Utena, what do you think they could’ve done better to make it an actual homage? (Aside from just not doing it at all, or just canning the entire 5th season bc of how terrible it was) :P
Pick their moment and not choose the literal emotional climax that the entire show had been leading up to as the point in the story where they just did a borderline shot for shot copy of the original Utena.
I don't like Steven Universe copying Utena either, because Steven universe is not as good and you should never reference a better show/movie in your show/movie (because it just makes the audience want to turn your show/movie off and watch the better one instead) but AT LEAST when SU referenced Utena is was in small, unimportant ways which did not impact the actual story.
Tumblr media
(this still fucking annoys me because you are throwing away the opportunity to make something iconic of your own show in favour of just making people think of a better show but at least it doesn't sabotage your emotional climax)
But the best way to pay homage to something is to look at what the story itself actually entails and build on that rather than just copy the surface level visuals.
The way Utena is inspired by Rose of Versailles, for instance 😏

This one was kind of a doozy for me.
Here's the Vincent playlist for all the playtesters of culture out there! He's going to get some longer songs than usual in here as a treat (classical music can be like that, so yeah). I'll also admit right now that I'm not especially knowledgeable in the classical music scene, so I may not always pick out what's considered the best interpretations of the pieces at large. I feel like I should have something to say on why I chose some of these so, like the Kadsey playlist notes, this is long.
We're starting off strong with Chopin's 12 Études, Op. 10: No. 12 in C Minor as performed by Murray Parahia. Op. 10: No. 12 is the piece that Vincent performed in his route, which is the most obvious choice yet when it comes to these playlists. The reason I chose Murray Parahia's interpretation specifically is because of the way I chose a piece later on.
Next song is a swing into the macabre with The Séance by Blackbriar. I felt like referencing Vincent's interests in the supernatural early on. Seeing a ghost was definitely a formative experience for this guy.
Cut for spoilers below, just in case.
I don't want all of the classical selections to be "oops, all piano" even if that's Vincent's instrument of choice, so I'm also sprinkling in some other stuff. This one is Ernst's The Last Rose of Summer "Étude No. 6" as performed by Midori on violin, the same instrument as Vincent's father. I'm no expert, but the bow work sounds insane in this. I also like to think Vincent is a character that has a fondness for roses, since he tends to wear a purple rose boutonierre on his jacket.
I know someone that's a big fan of the v-kei group Versailles, so I slipped a little of their music in, since I think it's symphonic metal-adjacent. First up from them is Sympathia. I think it fits well with the fact that Vincent has some complicated relationships to deal with in his life (especially with how he views his deceased parents). That theme somewhat continues with La Maritza by Therion, with the singer reminiscing about her father.
I'm not really sure if Vincent's really into Impressionism when it comes to classical music, but I like to think he has some fondness for more emotionally-driven pieces, to contrast Ashino's soulless approach to art if nothing else. So, we're going to have some Debussy. 12 Études, L. 136: 2. Pour les Tierces (I'm so sorry for these titles; I sure don't pick for classical music to be organized this way) as performed by Mitsuko Uchida caught my attention. Apparently, Debussy said in his time that his études are "a warning to pianists not to take up the musical profession unless they have remarkable hands", so yeah. This piece and the set it's from are supposed to be major skill checks and I respect that.
Dark Venus Persephone is something I chose to somewhat reference the Glory version of Vincent's mother, Lily (I specify the Glory version, since there will also be references to the Bureau version that's pulling the strings on the whole AI project). Basically, she's a beautiful and tragic figure that was gone before her time, fitting with this sort of song. METAL KINGDOM is next to amp up the energy a bit more, along with giving us some power of friendship vibes, since Vincent could really use that kind of positivity. I, Don Quixote as covered by Chrisopher Lee (yes, the actor that played Saruman in LotR, among other iconic roles; he was also a metal enthusiast and occasional opera singer) is next because no one can tell me that Vincent wouldn't have had some admiration for Sir Christopher Lee as a fascinating gentleman.
A Villain's Monologue and The Rapture (but it's Pink) are songs that I think could fit for either the true Lily in the Bureau or Ashton, since both of them have plans for Vincent and aren't interested in giving him any say in the matters (and some bits of each song kind of fit each character more). Hell, Ashino can count in this chaos, too, since he thinks Vincent's rigged to be chosen by us and plans to circumvent that himself (albeit without killing Vincent, which is a bit of a step up from Ashton's attitude).
This next one is very basic of me, but come on. Mozart's Requiem in D Minor, K. 626: Sequence: VI. Lacrimosa dies illa is such an iconic piece. If someone asks me what a requiem mass sounds like, I'd point to this. Death is Not the End comes next because death is practically a slap on the wrist for the AI characters in this story (as well as the player's avatar within the game, for that matter, since getting killed boots us back to the date selection screen with no lost progress). There also seems to be some reanimation stuff in there, so we could link that to Lily and the Bureau's plans.
Ghost is probably the weirdest song in this playlist, from a genre perspective, but it still feels on theme with the possibly supernatural aspect (especially if you take the music video into account, but this isn't about music videos) and the pessimistic doubt to it. Let's face it: Vincent's not exactly in the best situation in REBOOT, the game where we can finally get to know him. He's reluctant to reach out to his friends for help and his attempts to ask what's wrong with John and Kadsey lately have been brushed off in turn.
Next up is Chopin's 12 Études, Op. 25: No. 12 in C Minor as performed by Murray Parahia and I had decided to play a bit of a game in choosing that pianist. Usually, I look up a recommended artist for the solo pieces and pick something. For this one, I chose the piece and listened to several interpretations, picking out the one that spoke to me. This piece tends to also be called the Ocean étude and I assume it's from all of the arpeggios evoking rolling waves. Something about this specific interpretation sounds like an outpouring of grief to me, though I'm not sure if that was the intention from either Chopin's composition or Parahia's playing. Whatever the case is, this is the only version that nearly made me cry, so I knew this was the one. This was a fun little experiment and I'd recommend trying it, since interpretation in performance is very important to classical pieces. Also, this one ended up making me feel slightly more confident in my tastes, since I decided to look up info on Parahia and apparently his interpretations are extremely well-regarded in general.
Our Truth by Lacuna Coil us a song that gives me the vibe of "I reject your reality and I replace it with my own.", though I think we can hope for something more positive than what characters that have tried to change things have done so far.
Next is Beethoven's Sonata No. 14 "Moonlight" on C-Sharp Minor, Op. 27 No. 2: I. Adagio sostenuto as performed by Paul Lewis. Moonlight Sonata is the other piece that Vincent plays in his route, but that one is if you reject his date. Of course, trying to reject him only ends up bringing us closer to him by some strange events and we get some delicious lore on top of that.
The Rabbit of the Moon by Moonlight Haze is next and I'll admit I chose that for Vincent's fondness for rabbits. It's about the Chinese fairytale of the jade rabbit, which I admit I only originally knew about since someone gave me a book about the Chinese zodiac that included that story. Not going to tell the whole thing here, but basically the rabbit is rewarded for the kindness of their attempted self-sacrifice to help a stranger.
This next one's actually pretty scandalous and would probably embarrass Vincent to no end: Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Yes, I know the title of the version I put on the playlist is in French, but I thought putting the translation would be convenient here. This feels like it could be a decent nod to the yandere end, since I haven't even really mentioned the REBOOT yandere ends in any playlists. They all play out pretty similarly (something I have speculations about), so I thought I'd just slip in something extra spicy for that. I imagine some of you may be confused by me saying that about this song, since it mostly sounds dreamlike, sweeping, and a bit romantic, but you'll know what I mean if you know either the poem it's based on or the ballet made later on to accompany the song (especially the ballet, honestly; that ending is bold, is how I choose to put it, and I'm not at all surprised that reactions to it had been mixed, since that was the same sort of audience that literally rioted at the premiere of Rites of Spring). This piece is something called a symphonic poem, which basically means it was made to evoke the feeling from some other piece of art- stuff like poems or paintings.
The other Versailles song I slipped into this is DRY ICE SCREAM!! [Remove Silence] and I like the energy in this one. This one comes off to me as a bit of a tragic love song and it's hard not to see everyone stuck in Glory as a bit tragic with what they're all going through, even if Vincent and John are less aware of the details.
The final song is Shared Hearts by Snow White Blood and Lilly Seth. It's a fairytale-themed song about an inseparable bond between sisters, but I chose it because of Vincent's found family: his friends and the player. Considering that in his true end, even if that's not the truest ending of the game, he finally reaches out for help and has renewed direction in his life, I really wanted something to reflect the bonds that support him. I hope that his ending stays happy.
Next time will be John. I thought his list would be the most difficult, but it really wasn't.

👑 Some info about the new story:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Small lore and references: France, Versailles.
Text: I don't know what to say, so l chew slowly to buy myself time. Poppy seeds pop between my teeth and outside Aunt Suzanne's gardens laugh near the roses.
She is so careful, Alexander, that all the world think l'm a miser!
We didn't have the many. I can't say this to Aunt Suzanne. Especially not in front of Alexander.
Papa would be humiliated.
Despite the anxiety clenching my stomach, I force myself to swallow.
Tumblr media
This spoiler is definitely from this story. Looks like the story will be set in Rennaissance France, Versailles (I've been to Versailles so let's see how it goes) and the LI may be King Louis XIV (Sun King) . And my friend already has a theory about the man in the spoiler:

Similar to The Rose of Versailles and Dear Brother, Revolutionary Girl Utena is an exceptional story that should be required viewing for anyone with any interest in the shojo metagenre of anime, but it also has a problem that holds it back from being a 10/10 in my book. For Versailles, it was Oscar’s sudden and overwhelmingly intense attraction to Fersen serving as the bedrock for almost everything that happens in the back half of that series. For Dear Brother, it was that the final major arc of the story was mainly focused on two characters who weren’t really central to the plot. For Utena, it’s this (spoilers below the break):
Tumblr media
When Akio revealed that the Dueling Arena had actually just been an illusion created by his planetarium for the entire series, my initial reaction was “OHHH FUCK THAT’S COOL!!!” But this reveal, the narrative purpose of which I understand to be physically re-centering the entire dueling system around him, reintroduced the problem I had with the series when I was first trying to get into it: what level of reality are we dealing with?
The grandiose-but-mundane explanation that there was no sky arena or castle made me then call into question the entire finale. Did Anthy literally sacrifice herself to protect Dios far in the past, and her real body is being tortured for eternity to continue protecting him, or is the whole Rose Bride thing just a metaphor for the stigmatization of sexual abuse and what we’re seeing as an audience isn’t really happening? If it’s just a metaphor, what does that mean about Utena’s backstory, seeing Anthy impaled on all the swords and resolving to save her and being given the rose crest? If it’s real, wouldn’t the Rose Gate just be another illusion created by the planetarium, and why would Akio bother with it?
In the hypothetical version of the show where the planetarium reveal wasn’t done, I’d just be rolling along with the things as they happen and understand that this is all taking place in The Anime Dimension™, much like all the gags that happen during the student council meetings. But by going out of their way to ground those fantastical elements with an explanation, I’m suddenly right back where I was when I started watching the show, where I had difficulty getting in because I couldn’t figure out where my suspension of disbelief needed to be.
Tumblr media
That aside, though, I want to stress that this show fucking rules. I’m hoping you’ve already watched it yourself if you read through all that, since it basically spoils the entire ending, but if you haven’t, it’s still worth watching for the ride. Plus, it’s all free on YouTube, straight from the license holder!
However, unlike The Rose of Versailles and Dear Brother, there’s still a little more left for me to check out with Adolescence of Utena, which I am very excited to start watching tomorrow, so I have the chance to sleep on this ending.
