Rocket Secretly Likes Being Petted II
[Previous Chapter] [Next Chapter]
The next time Nebula found Rocket; he was on one of the couches in the Milano Commons--sitting on Peter Quill's lap as the human petted him with gentle hands.
"Is... is he...?" Nebula asked.
"Yeah," Quill answered. "He... he's sorta here, but... not?"
Nebula nodded, having talked to Rocket before about the timer-code that took 'him' semi-offline so he could experience what it was like to be petted - or experience gentle touch altogether - without the baggage of his memories and thoughts getting in the way.
With eyes closed, and body leaning back into the human's chest, the little raccoon was purring wildly - so hard that his body was vibrating - as Peter went over his headfur, scratched him behind the ears, and then moved to stroke and scratch under his chin!
Nebula tried to approach quietly so as not to disturb them--but Rocket heard her anyway and to her shock, his eyes opened and he issued a sort of noise from his throat, some sort of trilling raccoon-call, as if to beckon her over. Deep within the hardened core of Nebula, a small, unaltered Luphomoid Girl-spirit started banging around, jumping up and down.
"Aww..." the Luphomoid Cyborg murmured. No sooner had she sat down on the couch next to Peter, then Rocket was slowly moving back and forth between them, wanting pets from both. Nebula giggled and then she and Quill did so, laughing as Rocket nuzzle-nuzzle-nuzzled and lick-licked his friends.
"Damn... we could so use him to run the Milano--I mean, listen to the sound of that engine he's got!" Quill said a while later, making poor Nebula quietly laugh so hard she nearly choked! "I didn't know raccoons could purr like that!"
Rocket was on Peter's lap again when it happened. Gradually, his purrs faded--only so he could open his mouth and yawn hugely. Then, the little raccoon blinked, closed his eyes, inhaled a slow, deep, breath through his nose and finally exhaled slowly through his mouth. "Rocket? Hey, buddy, you back with us?"
When Rocket nodded, Quill continued, "Can you say something, so we know you're with us, pal?"
Now the raccoon's eyes went misty. "Almost don't wanna," he replied, his words soft and quiet. "Don't wanna make it weird or ruin it. Jus'..." his breath hitched in a sob, "jus' let me have this, Quill, jus'..." As Peter slowly wrapped his arms about Rocket - as the awful and demeaning thoughts and memories started to creep in, telling him he was a man, that this was degrading - poor Rocket suppressed a snarl and ruthlessly crushed it all down, inhaling Quill's scent...
... not realizing that - by allowing the base raccoon to surface - the timer had allowed Rocket to do something he should have done long ago: Imprint-on-Parent. Base-raccoon-Rocket and Cybernetic-AI-Rocket connected and reached an understanding: Peter Quill was now new PARENT/SIRE/ADMIN.
... and then Rocket blinked, and slowly turned to look at Peter Quill in awe, with tear-filled eyes. Peter Quill, his new Father. Peter Quill, the most wonderful person in the world.

Here is fanfics and chapters I plan to write in the near future. I am canningroxy22 on Archive of Our Own.
Fanfics I plan to write
Tangled AU - Rocket Raccoon x Peter Quill  - Rocket Raccoon is trapped in a tower by The High Evolutionary where he lives with his friends Lylla, Teefs and Floor in an imprisoned existence. When the thief Peter Quill stumbles upon the tower, Rocket makes a deal with him to take him and his friends to the outside world where they can see the sky. As their adventure begins, Rocket and Peter grow closer, creating a unity between animals and humans.
The Last of Us fanfic - When Jackson's peace is upheavaled and Joel suffers a grave injury, Ellie, Dina and Jesse race against time to find a cure. As Joel's life slips away, he thinks back to the most darkest times of his life. Heavy angst and violence with flashbacks throughout. Canon divergence to The Last of Us Part II, but takes place in the world of the TV show.
Faces Collide - What if Rocket Raccoon crash landed on Earth after escaping Counter Earth and befriended Peter Quill and his family. Platonic Roquill, both are childhood friends.
Mikhail Stranger Things fic  - a Stranger Things fanfic from the point of view of Mikhail Antonov, Dmitri's son as he escapes to America where he and his father ends up in the post-apocalyptic town of Hawkins. He becomes a member of the party and falls in love with Will Byers.
Chapters to complete
Guardians of The Outer Rim - Chapter 2 to complete. I'm really excited by this series. You will get Din and the Guardians interacting with Grogu and some suprise cameos. That's the only tease I'll give.
Trial of Two - Fifth and final chapter to be completed. It's been awhile since I've written this as I was wanting to finish this before the Mandalorian season three finale, but was too late. It's got quite a different story than what happened in the finale, so be aware of that.
Which one are you most excited for?

The Hunt For Florida Man
Rocket is jostled awake. “Ugh, WHAT?!?!” He says only to find the source of the shaking was his now-teenaged son. “Groot! What do you want?” The raccoon rolls over in bed to discover the time on his clock. “Oh my god! It’s almost 3 in the morning! Go to bed, you have school tomorrow!”
“I... I am Groot.” The tree squeaked as he shuffled his feet.
“Really? Another nightmare? Thought you outgrew them a while ago.” Rocket sighs. Knowing that he didn’t want to make Groot feel bad, he flipped up his blankets. “Fine, you can sleep with me tonight, but you better wake up on time tomorrow.” He states as Groot climbed into bed and got comfortable. “By the way, what was the nightmare about?
“I am Groot...” Groot pipes up, slightly embarrassed. “Seriously?!?!” Rocket facepalms himself. “Florida Man?!?!” He couldn’t believe his ears. “Groot, Florida Man ain’t real!”
“I am Groot.” Groot replies.
“I don’t get paid enough to deal with this...” Rocket grumbles. “Groot, you gotta stop believing every cockamamie thing that comes out of Kraglin and Drax’s mouths. They know that you’re young and gullible, you just gotta show them that you’re smarter than they think. Be the better, smarter person! Now go the flark to sleep.” Rocket advises his son sleepily as he yawns and moments later, begins to snore.
Groot was left alone with his thoughts as he too shortly drifted off to sleep. Thankfully this dream didn’t have Florida Man in it and the teenager slept good.                                                       —————— It was morning. Rocket and Groot got up on time and ready for the day. As they went downstairs, the other Guardians were in the kitchen eating breakfast and watching the morning news which covered the events throughout the galaxy. As Groot sat down with his favorite cereal in a bowl with milk, (a reward since Rocket didn’t have to fight with the ‘Treenager’ for a change, something that was becoming rarer and rarer with each passing day), he too was listening to the daily report.
“In Terran news, the National Football League is set to start the season with modified rules and attendance policies because of the pandemic going around on the planet. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are more than eager for the season to start with Super Bowl hopes thanks to their acquisition of their new Tight End Rob Gronkowski, and their star quarterback Tom Brady, both former New England Patriots.” The newslady read from the teleprompter. The Guardians booed in unison, their disdain for the Patriots, which they oh-so-lovingly call the ‘Cheatriots’, was one of the multiple things that united them as a family.
“What sellouts.” Peter complains. “Just because Tom Brady and Bill Belichick didn’t get along the last season and lost to the Tennessee Titans in the wildcard round.” Everyone else nods in agreement.
“In other Terran news, a Florida Man was arrested overnight after he was found walking his pet alligator on the sidewalk. The same man then threw a steaming hot bowl of ramen noodles in the officer’s face.” The same newscaster states as Peter turned off the projector. “See? Ain’tcha glad that we don’t live on Terra?” Rocket decreeds as he grabbed his breakfast. “They’re overrun with IDIOTS on that sad excuse of a planet. No offense, Quill.” He adds as the humie gave him a dirty look.
Just then a horn from outside beeped and a large engine could be heard getting into gear. Groot had just missed the bus to school. “Ugh!” Rocket groans as he got up from his seat at the kitchen table. “Groot! You were supposed to be out there five minutes ago so that you didn’t miss the bus. Now I gotta drive you to school so that you’re not late, again!”
There was nothing more in this world that embarrassed Groot more than having Rocket drive him to school. Quickly, the treenager thought of a plan.
“I am Groot!” The teen proposes. “No! You are NOT driving yourself to school.” Rocket replies as Groot stared at his father. “End of story.”
“Come on, Rocket.” Peter begins to negotiate as he draped an arm over Groot’s shoulder. “The kid’s been doing good both in school and at home recently. I think he deserves to have a reward.” “Ugh, fine!” Rocket concedes as Peter handed the keys to the Milano over to the excited teenager. “But if we find one scratch on the ship, your ass is grass!” He added as Groot grabbed his coat and rushed out the door.                                                  —————— As Groot climbed into the cockpit of the Milano and placed the keys into the ignition, he decides that he would skip school today. After he called the school’s office and faked an illness, (which was easy since the office had a phone system where all Groot had to do was press numbers to indicate why he would not be showing up today, further reducing the cause of suspicion.) Once he was done, he decided on what to do with the free time that he had.
As he navigated the log of various planets, Groot came across Terra. Then he got an idea: he WILL PROVE Florida Man’s existence to the entire galaxy! He smiles to himself as hey punched in the coordinates and let the autopilot feature fly to Earth as he dozed off and took a well deserved nap.
A couple of hours later, Groot was awakened by the ship’s alarm system as the monotone voice boomed “DESTINATION AHEAD! WELCOME TO TAMPA BAY, FLORIDA!”
The teen looked at where he was headed and while wiping his still-groggy eyes. “I am Groot?” He says as the ship approaches a pre-determined landing site set by a small airport. Since the area Groot landed in was full of affluent residents, the Milano didn’t stand out amongst the multi-million dollar jets. It also helped that it was early morning so that the paint job wasn’t noticeable.
“I am Groot?” The teen thought to himself. How was he going to prove Florida Man is real? He pondered this as he walked the tree-lined sidewalks.                                                     —————— As Groot continues his walk, he remembers something that Peter said a while back while telling the Guardians all about Florida, where he liked to go on vacation. He also told them about some popular myths and legends, most notably the ones that involved the thing known as Bigfoot, or Sasquatch.
After Peter finished telling the tale, Rocket still didn’t believe it. That is, until Drax sneakily approached up from behind and scared the humie.
Rocket cackled. “HAHAHAHAHA! I guess that Florida’s not the only place people live in fear of Sasquatches!” Peter then gives the rodent a dirty look before retreating to his room for the night.
That’s it! Groot knew that if Peter was scared of this “Sasquatch” or whatever it was, Florida Man must be scared of them too. It’s probably a common Terran fear.
Groot took out his cell phone to research what a “Sasquatch” looked like. Basically, it was no more than a tall humanoid figure that was covered in mud and grass. Since he was wearing his school uniform and he didn’t want Rocket to yell at him for getting it dirty again, Groot changed out of it and into some regular clothes that he had in his backpack. He returned to the Milano to drop off his uniform that he hastily stuffed in his bag and locked the ship up.
The tree then continued his walk. He was about to give up until he heard something. He was coming up to the biggest house yet that he’s seen yet. In the backyard, there he was: Florida Man! Well, not exactly THE Florida Man. It was Tom Brady. who was tossing around a clearly DEFLATED FOOTBALL around with his best friend, Rob Gronkowski.
Groot got into action and hid his phone in one of the holes in the tree. He then discovered a small marsh nearby and got himself covered in mud and grass.
Meanwhile, Brady and Gronk were tossing around the deflated football and working on various plays that their new head coach, Bruce Arians, wanted them to work on and perfect. ”Gronk! What the hell, man? You were supposed to catch that!” Tom shouted as the football hit Gronk in the head. “I’m NOT LOSING to the Saints next week!”
“Gronk heard something.” Rob replied. “Gronk think we’re being watched. Gronk think Bill set up cams around here so he can see the plays.”
Tom shook his head. “Do you really think that Belichick’s spying on us? If anything, I’m the one that came up with the whole SPYGATE thing!”
This was Groot’s chance! He ran as fast as he could, although being caked in mud and grass proved to slow him down, that didn’t deter him from his goal: proving Florida Man’s existence.
Groot screamed at the top of his lungs as he leapt into the air as Gronk turned around and screamed like a little girl!
“GRONK DOWN! GRONK DOWN!” The scared football player shouted as Groot’s weight was too much for him and he and the teen fell into the pool.
Luckily, Groot fell on top of Gronk, so his disguise wasn’t ruined and he was able to carry on with the prank as he used Gronk as a stepping stone to avoid the water.
Now it was just him and Tom “Florida Man” Brady.
Brady assumed a fighting stance. “I’m not afraid of you.” He said bravely as he swayed back and forth on his legs. “Unlike Gronk, I’m going to subdue you and take control of the situation until the cops come and then you’re gonna be their problem.” He said as a tiny whistle could barely be heard and a moment later, Brady loss consciousness and joined Gronk in the pool. “Get’cho ass back to the ship right now!” Rocket’s voice boomed from Groot’s headphones, which were plugged into his iPod. “You are in DEEP TROUBLE when you get home, mister!” He adds as Groot grabbed his cell phone from the tree and Rocket remotely piloted the Milano to Groot’s location.  Groot climbed into the ship. He knew that he would be grounded for A LONG TIME. But before Rocket would pilot him back to the house, Groot made sure to upload the footage that he got to YouTube.  Florida Man IS REAL!———————————————————————————————————————

The Joys of Raising a Teenaged Groot- Chapter 58: A Different Perspective
The next day, Groot was given the all-clear to leave the nurse’s office and get back to his regular schedule. Azrik monitored Groot from the security camera set up in the nurse’s office from his phone and saw nothing that alarmed him, or needed him to come over during the night, but when Groot goes for his next appointment, he will tell Cre’Nok and Xalani of his concerns with Groot’s medication.
“Okay, Groot, are you ready to go to therapy?” Azrik asked Groot as the teenager nodded. He then pushed Groot out of the nurse’s office and down the hallway to the therapy wing.
Once the three of them got to the therapy wing, Groot thought that Azrik would have to leave for one of his many meetings. The teenager is confused as his aide walks inside the room with him and Rocket.
“Groot, I need to see how you do in therapy today, so I’m going to observe your sessions both today and tomorrow.” Azrik informs Groot as his therapists come by to take him inside.
“Hey, Groot.” Zeliek greeted him. “Are you ready to get started?” Groot wasn’t sure. “We have something fun for you to try today.” That piques Groot’s interests and he nods as Zeliek and Qu’lo leave to go retrieve whatever it was that they were talking about.
A few minutes later, Zeliek and Qu’lo came back with the item: a stander.
“Alright, Groot, are you ready to stand up?” Talia asks Groot as she takes off his lap tray and undoes his various seat belts, as well as swing his footrests out of the way. Miska and Talia positioned Groot’s feet on the stander’s platform and when they were happy with how Groot’s feet were situated, they strapped them in.
Qu’lo and Zeliek then wrapped Groot in a back support and attached the straps to the stander. Zeliek then slowly cranked the lever that would bring Groot from a sitting position to standing. Once Groot was fully upright, his therapists quickly placed lateral side supports as well as a headrest and a pommel in between his knees in order for Groot to stand in an optimal position. The last thing that was put on was an activity tray at the top of the device so that Groot could still do his regular exercises with his arms.
Rocket walked to where his son was now standing. He grabs a step stool that was to the side and climbed the two steps to the top of it to look Groot in his eyes.
“Hey, you’re taller than me now.” Rocket smiles at Groot before he hugged him. “I’m so proud of you.”
Azrik got up from where he was sitting and working with his laptop. “Groot, do you want to see yourself in the mirror?” Groot nods as his aide gets a full length mirror for Groot to look at himself.
Groot didn’t know the significance of him standing until he gazed at himself in the mirror. For once he was eye-to-eye with the people around him instead of having to look up at everyone (except Rocket) all the time. He didn’t care about all of the supports and straps that were needed in order for him to stand, all that mattered to him was that he was now level with everyone.
Groot broke down crying at his new view of the world. Rocket hugged him and because of feeling Groot’s sobs, the raccoon couldn’t help but cry too. These weren’t sad tears, they were happy tears. Tears for Groot experiencing something so simple and so small that was unfairly taken away from him that fateful night when the rebellious teenager made what was probably the worst decision of his young life.
After his therapy session was over with and he was taken out of the stander and placed back in his wheelchair, Rocket couldn’t help but feel pride for Groot. The teenager was starting to amaze his father at how fast and determined he was in his recovery.
As a special treat, Rocket took Groot back to his room to watch Bob Ross. What they both didn’t know was that there was some people waiting for them in Groot’s room.————————————————————————————————

The Joys of Raising a Teenaged Groot- Chapter 57: Attitude
Later that day, after Groot was disconnected from his feeding tube, it was time for him to go to therapy for his daily session. Groot wasn’t thrilled, instead wanting to stay in his room and watch TV with Rocket. The teen thought that since Azrik had to go to yet another meeting, Rocket would let him skip therapy for today and let him do whatever he wanted. Rocket, however, taking a sudden turn in being a responsible parent to Groot, encourages the teen to go do what he needs to do. Even when Groot whines, Rocket stands his ground.
“Hey, we all have things that we don’t like to do. I’m giving you a little freedom by not having your arm restraints on you.” Rocket tells a discontent Groot as they made their way to the therapy wing. Groot crosses his arms as his father wheels him down the hallway. “Don’t give me that attitude, Groot. You know that you have to go everyday and that’s the end of this discussion.” Rocket commands as he gets behind Groot in order to get him to the elevator so that they could go down to the floor that the therapy wing was on. Groot rolls his eyes as Rocket presses the elevator button to go down.
Once Groot and Rocket were in the elevator, Groot’s attitude didn’t subside. The teen kept up with the whining, even after they were out of the elevator and going down the hallway to the therapy room. As they were about to pass the main conference room, where Azrik was holding his meeting, Groot’s stubbornness reached a fever pitch. The teen began to bang the back of his head, which was safely ensconced in his protective helmet, against his wheelchair’s headrest. Groot didn’t stop there, as he balled his hands into fists and began to bang them on his shatterproof lap tray while screaming at the top of his lungs, trying to get the attention of anyone nearby.
Rocket had enough. “That’s it!” He exclaimed as he turned Groot around, found an empty corner, and made Groot’s wheelchair face the wall. “You’re in timeout until your attitude changes!” He then walks away from Groot, but remaining nearby until his son’s temper tantrum subsided and he was done with his timeout.
Groot remained in timeout for thirteen minutes. When his time was up, Rocket walked back over to Groot, turned his chair around, and made him look at his father.
“Groot, you were in timeout for screaming, banging your hands on your tray, and banging your head against your headrest. Now can you apologize to me so that we can continue on to therapy?” Rocket beseeches as Groot signed sorry to him and Rocket responded by hugging his son and kissing him on his cheek. Groot was about to cry, having made his father upset. “Hey, hey, don’t cry. I’m not upset.” Rocket proceeds to cuddle Groot as he wraps his son up in his arms. “You were misbehaving, I gave you a timeout, and now all of that is over with. Now can we continue on with our day?” Groot nods as Rocket gathers up his things before he pushed his son down the hallway.
Rocket didn’t even take five steps before Groot was crying out in pain. Rocket stops, and being the concerned parent that he is, he tries to figure out what was wrong with Groot.
”Hey, hey.” Rocket was again at Groot’s side as the teenager pressed his hands against his forehead and screamed in pain. “Alright, son. Let’s get you to the nurse’s office.” He declared as he turned around and pushed Groot the opposite way from the therapy wing.
Once Rocket got Groot into the nurse’s office, Rocket told her what was wrong with Groot and upon her seeing Groot, she ushered them into a private room with an electric bed and hoist for her to get Groot into the bed and laying down comfortably.
Once Groot was in the bed, Azrik came by.
“Zeliek said that Groot didn’t show up today.” Azrik stated as he looked at Groot. “What happened?”
“Well, Groot didn’t want to go, so by the time that I got him on this floor, he was extremely upset and he began to bang his head against his headrest, he slammed his fists on his lap tray, and he screamed at the top of his lungs.” Rocket explains. “I had no other choice besides putting him in timeout until his attitude changed. As soon as we began to go to therapy, Groot screamed out in pain.”
“Groot, where does it hurt?” Azrik asks as he and the nurse begin to look Groot over. Groot cries when Azrik lightly touches his arms. “Alright. Now, I’m going to have to take your arm braces off, okay?”
Rocket then tells Groot to look at him as Azrik, and the nurse gently took off his arms braces and inspected his arms. Other than a slight flinch when Azrik felt Groot’s bones in his arms to make sure that they weren’t broken, his arms and hands were fine. Groot was beyond relieved when his braces were put back on.
“Do you hurt anywhere else, Groot?” Azrik asks as Groot points to the back of his head, where he banged it against his headrest. “Alright, let me take off your helmet and have a look.” He said as he gingerly takes off Groot’s helmet and inspects it. “Well, his helmet isn’t damaged.”
Rocket nods silently. He knew what was coming next as Groot’s aide inspected his son’s skull and each scar that Groot had on his head. “But what?” He was almost afraid to ask.
“Well, the good news is that Groot doesn’t have any skull fractures, so we don’t need to go to the emergency room.” Azrik observes as he places Groot’s helmet back on him. Azrik then gets suspicious of the possible cause. “Groot, do you have a headache right now?” He asks as Groot nods.
Rocket became just as concerned as Azrik was. “What does that mean?”
“This could mean that Groot’s medication that he takes to prevent him from getting any seizures could be losing effect on him.” Azrik suspected. “I’ll have to call Cre’Nok and Xalani and see what they think.” He then walks over towards the cabinet in the room and gets out a syringe as well as a vial to treat Groot’s headache. As he prepares Groot’s feeding tube to receive the dose, Groot swats at the syringe. “I know, Groot, but do you want the headache forever?” Groot shook his head. “Then you’re going to have to take your medicine. I’ll be fast, but gentle on you.” He says as he injects the medicine into Groot’s tube.
“Alright, so as soon as Groot’s over his headache, he can go down to therapy?” Rocket asks as he holds Groot’s hand.
“Actually, I’m going to recommend that Groot stays here for observation. I’m worried about his one medication not doing what it’s supposed to do. I’ll call Zeliek and explain to him what’s going on and Groot can go to therapy tomorrow morning.” Groot cheers at his small victory and points at the TV overlooking his bed. “Sorry, Groot, but to be safe, I don’t want you to be near any electronics, so Rocket’s going to have to read to you tonight.”
Rocket nods. “I don’t mind, Groot. But Azrik’s right, we have to be careful right now.”
Groot then returns Rocket’s nod. A few minutes later, Groot needed a diaper change as well as a new catheter inserted. After that was taken care of, Azrik gave Groot his nighttime formula and evening medications and stayed with Groot and Rocket until his shift was over and he had to leave for the night. Before he left for the night, Azrik gave Rocket his emergency phone number and told him to call it should anything happen with Groot.
Luckily, Rocket didn’t have to dial it that night. —————————————————————————————————

The Joys of Raising a Teenaged Groot- Chapter 49: Balance
Azrik came back just after the other Guardians left Rocket and Groot for the day. As they passed Groot’s aide, he saw that Peter was hunched over and Kraglin had a guilty look on his face.
“What was that about?” Azrik asks Rocket.
“I don’t know.” Rocket lies and shrugs his shoulders. “Peter got sick or something...”
“Oh, no.” Azrik was genuinely concerned for the humie. “I hope he’s alright.”
“Yeah, I think Gammy said that it was some sort of stomachache or something.” Rocket surmised. “He’ll get over it and be back to his stupid self by tomorrow.”
Azrik didn’t know how to respond to that. “Okay... well... anyways.” He tries to remember why he came by. “Groot, are you ready to go to therapy?” He asks Groot as the teenager nodded.
Once they got to the therapy wing, they were greeted by Groot’s therapists, who then brought Groot, Rocket, and Azrik over to the main area.
“Hey, Groot.” Qu’lo greeted the teenager as the other therapists smiled at him kindly. Qu’lo then turns to Rocket. “His session won’t be long today, we just want to see if he’s regained any more movement.”
“Oh, okay. I’ll just go get a cup of coffee or something while he works on his exercises.” Rocket proposes while Groot reaches out for his father’s arm and looks the raccoon in the eyes. “What is it, Groot? Do you want me to stay here?” He asks as Groot nods his head. “Okay. I’ll stay here and watch you do your thing.”
Groot’s regular therapy session went off without a hitch. He did all of his normal exercises and stretches without complaining one bit and finished fifteen minutes earlier than usual.
“Groot, you did really good today and you have a couple of minutes left of therapy, so is there anything else you want to do?” Azrik asked as Groot looked around the therapy room. He then spots the extra large yoga balls that he sees the other therapists use for their patients. “Alright, if you want to try sitting on one, we can see about that.”
Azrik then took the largest yoga ball out from the corner that they were stored in and rolled it next to Groot before he sat on the balancing ball. Qu’lo and Zeliek then unbuckled Groot from his wheelchair and carefully picked him up before handing him over to Azrik, who helped Groot sit up straight on his lap.
Groot did his exercises flawlessly while he was sitting on the ball. Groot’s head control was even showing signs of improvement as the teenager was holding his head upright and moving it side to side for longer than usual instead of Groot’s neck straining and as a result, Groot staring at his lap when he doesn’t have the support of his wheelchair’s custom headrest. Azrik and Rocket were amazed with Groot’s progress. Although Groot was still doing the same muscle-strengthening and fine motor skill exercises, the movement of the ball provided an added sensory element in that he needed to compensate for in order to remain upright, even though Azrik was giving Groot some support on the sides of his lower back.
“Groot, you did good today.” Rocket congratulated his son as the remainder of his therapy session was ending.
Azrik was about to pick Groot up and place him back in his wheelchair when he felt Groot do something.
“Hey, Groot. I want to see something.” Azrik proposes as he adjusts Groot in his lap. “I want to see if you can sit up by yourself without me helping you, so I’m going to let go of you and see how you do.” He stated as he slowly lowers his hands from Groot’s sides.
To everyone’s shock and awe, Groot was able to sit upright by himself for a good ten seconds before he needed Azrik’s support. Rocket was especially proud of his son and praises him as Azrik and Qu’lo got Groot back in his wheelchair.
“You did good, Groot. Now, do you want to see if Star-Munch is still puking his brains out?” Rocket congratulates Groot as the teen laughs as the father pushes his son back to his room. ——————————————————————————————————

The Joys of Raising a Teenaged Groot- Chapter 56: Regret
Once they got back to Groot’s room, they saw Azrik setting something up on the teenager’s TV.
“Hey, guys.” Azrik waved to them.
“Hi, Azrik.” Rocket responded. “What are you doing?”
“Well, we just got something exciting for all the residents, but since you and Groot are such big video game fanatics, I’d thought that you guys would like to be the first ones to try it out.” Azrik answered back.
Rocket didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know if Groot still had an interest in, let alone how he could still play video games after his accident.
“I, I don’t know, Azrik.” The raccoon replied. “I, I don’t know how Groot can even hold or use a controller.”
“Actually, he can now.” Azrik stated as he brought out an adaptive controller. “This is a modified controller that I hooked up various switches, buttons, and levers that’s easier for Groot to press and hold.” Groot then made some noises to indicate that he was hungry. “Alright, Groot, I’ll take you to go get your lunchtime feeding.”
With that, Azrik took Groot down to the nurse’s office to have his lunchtime formula hooked up to him. Rocket then took a look at the various video games that Groot had to choose from. One title caught the raccoon’s eye. This was the latest game that Rocket had bought Groot for his birthday and the game that was in his handheld video game system the night that Groot was arrested and Rocket overreacted and took all of his electronic devices, disconnected his son’s wifi, and grounded him until God-knows-when.
The raccoon dug into his pocket. He brings out the cartridge of the game that he took away from Groot the night he was brought home by the Nova Corps. He then went into his bag and found Groot’s handheld system and held it in his hands. Rocket then turns on the system and sees that the last time Groot played his game was just after he came home from school on the day that he was caught with those good-for-nothing hooligans. He decides that he would not finish the level that Groot was on the last time that he played, or delete Groot’s last saved game. He would let Groot pick up where he left off.
Rocket looks over the manual to the game, what buttons controlled what, and matched those buttons to the modified ones on Groot’s controller. He soon discovers that most of the actions in the game requires the use of both of his hands. For those instances he would help Groot.
Azrik and Groot came back a few minutes later. Rocket helped Azrik set up the controller and the various buttons, levers and switches on Groot’s lap tray so that he could reach them easily as well as tilt Groot’s chair back so that the teen was comfortable. When Groot was all situated, Azrik left to do some important things that he needed to do.
Rocket then turns on the TV and the video game console before he sits next to his child. Groot just stared at the screen, not remembering that not too long ago, that video games were his life.
“Groot, buddy?” Rocket catches Groot’s attention. “Don’t you remember this game? This one was your favorite until-.” He stops just before he finished his sentence, not wanting to dwell on what happened to his son. Rocket regains his thoughts. “Do you want to play?” Groot shook his head as Rocket stood up and placed his hand on the teenager’s shoulder. “I’ll help you if you get stuck. I just want you to enjoy being a kid again.”
Groot then uses his talker. “I am enjoying being a kid, Dad. Aren’t you?”
Rocket was about to speak, but breaks down. “Yeah, but, but.” He buckles underneath his emotions and collapses next to Groot, crying as he hugged him. “I didn’t want any of this. I’m sorry that I wasn’t more strict with you. If I was, we would be home with the guys instead of here. You wouldn’t be in that chair and having to eat everything through a tube. You would be talking and arguing with me with your own voice instead of through a box. You would be a normal kid.”
Groot then breaks down and cries as Rocket cradles him and gently rocks him back and forth in his arms. Rocket shushes Groot and tells him how much he loves him.
Father and son spend the rest of the time that they had together reconciling and reconnecting. Rocket felt that Groot needed to get his emotions out in order to help with his recovery.—————————————————————————————————

The Joys of Raising a Teenaged Groot- Chapter 55: The Crawl
The Guardians returned home to nurse Peter’s “Injury” back to health, leaving Groot and Rocket alone with each other.
“So Groot, after therapy today, what would you like to do?” Rocket asks as Groot shrugs. “Alright, I’ll let you think about it. Ready to go down there?” Groot nods as father and son leave the room.
When Groot and Rocket get to the therapy wing, Rocket tells his son’s therapists that Groot kicked his leg yesterday and if they wanted to help him get more of that type of movement in Groot’s legs that they had his permission to do so.
“Actually, Rocket, we wanted to try something new with him.” Zeliek replied as he brought over a red padded board with rounded sides as well as rounded caster wheels on the bottom.
“What do you mean by that?” Rocket wondered.
“We want to see if Groot can crawl.” Qu’lo answers as he and Zeliek get Groot out of his chair and lay him down on his belly on the board. “This will also build up his arm strength.” He then turns to Groot as he guides the teens arms on how to push himself. “Groot, this is what you’re going to do move each arm up and down, up and down and now you’re crawling, see?” Groot nods. “Now, can you do it by yourself?”
Groot just stares ahead. He looks at Rocket, unsure of what to do next. The raccoon took this as inspiration.
Rocket stood up. “Groot, buddy.” He gently gets on the floor next to his son. “When you were a baby and were just starting to crawl, you’d want me on the floor and crawl with you. How about we do that again?”
Groot nods and on cue, him and Rocket crawled around the therapy mat, pretty much oblivious to where they were or their surroundings. It was pretty much like they were at home and Groot was a baby again. Once the session was over with, and Rocket was taking Groot back to his room, he couldn’t believe that Groot enjoyed something that he did all the time when he was a baby.
Rocket was beginning to notice that Groot was starting to act like his old self. —————————————————————————————————

The Joys of Raising a Teenaged Groot- Chapter 51: Floating
The next day, Groot was up and ready to begin his day. As Rocket and the other Guardians entered his room, Azrik was already helping get Groot dressed and into his chair.
“Oh, hey, guys.” Azrik welcomes them as he got Groot buckled in and his talker and lap tray attached  to his chair. “Groot just got done with his breakfast feeding and he has a long day today because he has a long therapy session with his therapists, followed by an equally long session with Calina.”
“Well, why are you asking us if we want to leave?” Gamora replies as she strokes Groot’s face. “We want to be here for Groot and support him.”
The Guardians go with Groot to his therapy session for the day. Azrik leaves as he had a rather important meeting to attend to and there was no way of him missing it. As the Guardians waved goodbye to Azrik, Groot’s therapists came by.
“Hey, Groot.” Qu’lo greeted him. Groot looks bored as he doesn’t feel like doing his exercises today. “No, no. We have something special planned for you today.” Groot looks intrigued. “How would you like to go swimming today?” He asks as Groot looks worried.
“Groot, you’ll be fine.” Rocket reassures his son. “We went to the beach yesterday and you dipped your feet into the ocean, remember?” The raccoon reminds Groot as the teenager slowly nods. “Okay, so do you want to do this? Don’t worry, we’ll be here watching you and cheering you on.” Groot then nodded his approval.
Qu’lo and Zeliek then took Groot into the dressing room to get the teenager into his bathing suit. The Guardians took their seats along the bleachers to watch Groot do his lesson. Five minutes later, Qu’lo and Zeliek re-emerged from the dressing room pushing Groot in a specially-designed pool wheelchair, since his regular wheelchair couldn’t be brought out to the pool area because it wasn’t safe enough to do so.
Talia and Miska then placed Groot into a special life vest that was designed to support the teenager’s body in the water as he worked on his exercises in the water.
Miska, Talia, and Qu’lo then readied the pool lift that would bring Groot into the water. Groot did not like this at all. He screamed as Zeliek parked his chair next to the lift, flipped up one of his chair’s armrests, as well as the armrest on the pool lift’s chair, and as Zeliek and Qu’lo prepared to get Groot in the pool lift’s seat.
“Groot, Groot.” Rocket calls out concernedly. “What’s wrong, buddy? Are you scared?” Groot coos at his father’s question.
“Do you want Rocket to go swimming with you?” Peter asks as Groot nodded. He then turns to Qu’lo. “Can Rocket join Groot in the pool?” He just wants to confirm that it was okay to do so.
“If it makes Groot more relaxed, then Rocket can join him. He might even be more inclined to do his exercises if he sees Rocket helping him.” Qu’lo postulated.
“But I forgot my bathing suit at the motel.” Rocket stated. “And all of the other bathing suits are too big for my raccoon-sized butt.”
Drax then poked Kraglin in his side.
“Oh, uh, Rat. We managed to find one of your spare suits in the ship today.” Kraglin responded as he handed the raccoon the black bag containing the swimsuit.
“Oh, okay.” Rocket thanks the Xandarian as he went into the changing room. As soon as Rocket was out of earshot, Kraglin and Drax snickered amongst themselves, trying to conceal their laughter. Five minutes pass, then ten. It NEVER takes Rocket this long to change. Peter gets up and goes over to the dressing room door.
Peter knocks on the door. “Rocket? Everything okay in there?” “SHUT UP STAR-MUNCH!” The angry raccoon yells from his side of the door.
“Woah, easy there.” Peter was shocked at Rocket’s anger. “It’s your bathing suit, right? So it has to fit you perfectly. WHAT THE HELL?!?!”
Rocket steps out of the dressing room. Kraglin and Drax try to contain their laughter at the sight. The raccoon was wearing a bathing suit that had American Flags printed all over it with a purple/pink band at the top. Oh, it wasn’t a normal bathing suit, but a SPEEDO.
“WHAT, WHAT THE HELL?!?!” Peter still couldn’t comprehend what he was seeing. “Where the HELL did you get that?!?!”
“Don’t blame me!” Rocket argued. “It was in the bag that Kraglin gave me!” Rocket said as he turned around, revealing a perfect hole that he cut himself in the back that was big enough for his tail to fit through. Peter rolled his eyes. “Don’t worry, Star-Munch. I’m only ‘borrowing’ it. I’ll give it back to you.” He says as he gets rid of a wedgie.
“No, no.” Peter covers his face as he shook his head. “Keep it. It was much too loose for me anyways.” Rocket shrugs his shoulders. “Hm, weird. It fits me just fine.” Peter raises his eyes and gets ready to punch Rocket as he slowly realizes what the trash panda is really saying.
“Rocket...” Gamora says to de-escalate the pending fight.
“Fine!” Rocket responds as he turns his attention over to Groot, but not before sticking his tongue out at Peter. “Groot, you ready to go?” He asks his son as the teen looks frightened.
“Rocket, how about you get in first to show Groot that there’s nothing to be afraid of.” Miska suggests.
Rocket walks over to the other side of the pool where there was a diving board he could leap off of. He performs a perfect cannonball and then doggy paddles his way towards where Groot was about to get transferred onto the pool lift so that he could enter the pool.
“Groot, are you ready to go swim?” Zeliek again asks the teen. Groot was still fearful. “Look, you saw how Rocket got in and don’t you want to do your therapy session with him?” Groot nodded. “Alright, but first, we got to get you in the pool. There’s nothing to be afraid of. If you do get scared, Rocket will calm you down.”
Groot readied himself as Zeliek and Qu’lo lifted him up from the pool chair and onto the lift seat. Qu’lo strapped him in using the velcro strap as he supported Groot’s back as he helped the teenager sit upright in the chair. Talia operated the controls that made the lift raise up and lower Groot into the pool. Talia held Groot’s feet up as she made sure that he didn’t get them hit on something and causing him pain. Zeliek was already in the water and waiting to get Groot out of the lift so that he could start his therapy session.
Groot was frightened as the lift descended into the water. Rocket does his best to calm down his son and said encouraging things to ease Groot’s fears and by the time the teenager was in the pool, his fears were subsided.
“See, Groot? You did it.” Zeliek praises him as he and Qu’lo got the teenager out of the lift. “I know, it was scary.” He acknowledges as Groot shouts out as Talia and Miska joined them in the pool. “Feel how warm the water is?” He asks as Groot still refuses to lower his arms into the water, keeping them scrunched up near his chest.
Their first order of business was to get Groot acclimated to the water. They achieved this by throwing an inflatable ball to Groot and encouraging him to push it back towards them, making him having to lower his arms in order to push. Once Groot’s arms were low enough that he didn’t mind them coming into contact with the water, they began to do his regular exercises. Groot was doing so good that they got out some pool toys for him to play with, but the teenager refused to use them.
“Well, do you think Groot can float on his back?” Rocket inquires as Groot looks interested.
“Perhaps.” Zeliek answers. “But we’ll have to hold him so that he doesn’t go underwater. But it’s worth a shot.”
Zeliek and Qu’lo then proceeded to have Groot lay on his back. Groot was apprehensive about it at first, but after some convincing from Rocket, Groot’s fears were once again put aside and he floated on his back.
“Groot, do you want to move your arms up and down?” Groot looks at Miska as to say that he needed assistance to do it. “Don’t worry, we’ll help you out.”
With guidance, Groot moved his arms up and down from his sides as he floated. With much praise and encouragement from everyone in the room, Groot grew his confidence as his first swimming session ended and he got back into the pool lift so that he could change back into his regular clothes.
As Zeliek and Qu’lo got Groot back into the pool chair to go into the changing room, Rocket swam over to the ladder and proceeded to climb out of the pool.
“Well, I think that today was successful so far for Groot.” He proclaimed as he saw Qu’lo and Zeliek shut the door to the changing room after they brought Groot into it. “He really enjoyed swimming and he’s getting better with trusting everyone and-.” Rocket’s attention then turned to Peter, who was laughing uncontrollably. “What’s so funny, Star-Munch.” Peter then points to the Speedo that was floating in the pool. Rocket glares at the humie before jumping back into the pool to retrieve it.
After Rocket got changed back into his regular clothes, he growled at Peter for embarrassing him. At least he was thankful that Groot wasn’t witness to it as they walked Groot to his session with Calina. —————————————————————————————————

Milk, Cookies, and a Metal Arm- Chapter 1: The Legend of Captain America
“Captain America had no ill will against Tony Stark and hopes that Tony would still fight alongside him should there be another immediate threat to the Avengers.” Rocket read from the storybook as Groot sat on his lap. “What a crapload of shit.” He rolled his eyes as he closed the book.
“Language!” Peter called out as he leaned in the middle of Groot’s doorway, back against the wall and arms crossed. “You wouldn’t want Groot to pick up on your bad habits, would you?”
“Shut it, Star-Munch.” Rocket snarled. “It ain’t like Groot’s gonna say that anyways.”
“I am Groot!” Groot smiled at his adoptive father, who smiled innocently at Peter, who scowled. “I am Groot! I am Groooot!!!”
Rocket chuckled innocently towards Peter, whose scowl intensified at Groot’s newfound phrase. “Well, ahem, to anyone who can’t understand him.”
“What were you even reading to him anyways?” Peter questioned Rocket.
Rocket turned the book over and read the cover. “Captain America: Civil War. By the Russo Brothers.” He placed the book on Groot’s nightstand beside his crib. “If you ask me, these Russo Brothers got a couple of screws loose. A soldier that was brainwashed and given a metal arm to kill at the mention of a few code words? Yeah, if you ask me, the Russos are full of it.”
“I am Groot.” Groot smiled at having learned yet another new phrase. “I am Groooot!”
“Groot!” Rocket quickly hushed his son. “I did NOT say that word.” The raccoon then smiled sheepishly at Peter. “I meant that these Russo Brothers that wrote this book have a, uh, creative mind. Yeah, a creative mind.”
Peter then let forth a bemused smile towards Rocket. “Uh, huh, sure, Rocket. Good night you two.” The humie then turns off the big light in Groot’s room, leaving only the small lamp on the baby tree’s nightstand for light as Rocket tucked the sapling in his crib.
“I am Groot?” Groot squeaked from his crib.
“No, Groot.” Rocket replied. “Captain America doesn’t fly all around the galaxy in his Quinjet dropping off presents on the night before Independence Day. He ain’t Santa Claus.” Groot’s heart broke as he is told this.
“Actually, Groot.” Peter thought fast on his feet to prevent Rocket from obtaining the Worst Father of the Year Award. “He does. And he really likes it if you leave him some milk and cookies.”
Groot was intrigued now. “I am Groot?”
“Uh, he might leave you some presents.” Peter tries to understand what Groot is saying. “Were you a good seedling this year?”
“I am Groot!” Groot nods enthusiastically. “I am Groot?”
“No, Groot. Rocket isn’t gonna get any presents because he was a bad, bad, bad raccoon.” Peter explains as Groot giggles. “If anything, all Rocket’s gonna get is a firework fired at him.” Groot’s innocent giggle then erupts into full-blown laughter as Rocket growls and leaves Groot’s nursery. Peter then turns out the nightlight as he tucks Groot back into his crib and kisses him goodnight.——————————————————————————————————

Rocket Raccoon, YouTube Star
“OKAY! THAT’S IT!” Rocket yelled as he entered the living room, livid as ever.
“Uh... hey, Rocket.” Peter greeted the raccoon as Rocket stood in the middle of the room, clearly angry and every inch of hair on his raccoon frame standing on end, a clear sign that he was especially angry.
Rocket then turned into the humie’s direction as he pointed his gun in Peter’s face. “You’ve got a minute to live, fill it with words.” The rodent demanded.
Peter was dumbfounded. What did he possibly do or say that would make Rocket this angry.
“Uh, okay, I don’t know who or what you’re angry about, but-.” Peter began.
“But what?!?!” Rocket barked as he cocked his gun and rested his finger on the trigger.
“I-I can assure you that none of us are to blame!” Peter responded.
“Oh, yeah? Then how do you explain THIS then?” Rocket interrogated Peter as he put down his gun and shoved his halopad to the captain of the crew.
Peter looked at the halopad. It had YouTube opened up to a video titled “Rabid Space Raccoon Wakes Up from Extensive Cybernetic Reconditioning.” It had Rocket waking up from his procedure that he had to address issues that he’s had with his cybernetic implants for the past few months. Evidently, it showed Rocket acting as if he was drunk, except instead he was more cheerful and loopier than usual.
“Well, I can assure, Rocket, that none of us in here recorded this.” Peter explains as Rocket’s tiny nostrils flare. “All of our cell phones and stuff were confiscated the moment we went to visit you in the recovery room. Well, at least mine were, BECAUSE I’M AN HONEST PERSON!” He added on for added sincerity.
“Rocket, none of us would ever record you without your permission.” Gamora stated as she knelt down to Rocket’s level and looked him in the eye.
“How do I know you’re not lyin’?” Rocket asked.
“Because we’re Daughters of Thanos.” Her sister, Nebula, answered to the raccoon. “If there’s one thing he didn’t teach us was to lie, that’s why we’re so bad at it.”
Gamora got up and stood behind her sister as she gently grabbed her shoulders to calm Nebula down,a trick she learned while growing up under Thanos’ parentage. “You can trust us, Rocket. Neither my sister or I would embarrass you like that.”
“Yeah, we have more devious ways of doing that.” Nebula muttered underneath her breath.
Mantis cautiously approached Rocket. “Crabby Puppy? I know that you’re angry, but I would never do anything that would embarrass you.”
“I know, Mantis.” Rocket was trusting of the newest member of their dysfunctional family. “You’re the most trustworthy of these A-Holes that make up our so-called ‘Family.’” The raccoon’s attention then turned to Drax and Kraglin. “You two, explain yourselves.”
“I was sorta distracted.” Kraglin replied. “I was hungry and I heard that the facility we were at had a high-tech, brand new, soup-dispensing, vending machine, so I decided to go look for it. Turns out that I was lied to and no such thing exists and now I’m heartbroken...” the depressed Xandarian finished as Rocket turned his attention towards Drax.
“I wasn’t even there.” Drax began as Rocket stared at him. “I was working on my invisibility skills.”
“Oh my god.” Peter facepalmed himself. “Drax for the millionth time, you can’t turn invisible! You’re-.”
“Shut it, Star-Munch.” Rocket interrupted. “I’d believe any cockamamie excuse Drax has before I would believe anything that comes out of your stupid mouth.” He fumed as he stormed out of the living room and went upstairs to his room.
The rest of the Guardians were left in absolute silence. The only noise was coming from Groot’s handheld video game. The teenager was too engrossed in his video game to pay much attention to what was going on around him. He just sat in the chair that he dragged to the corner and kept playing his game, his concentration fully on the halopad that displayed his game.
“Well, at least somebody managed to tune out Rocket’s little tirade...” Peter stated as Groot put his video game down as he got up from his seat and walked over towards the other Guardians.
“I am Groot.” The teen greeted as he looked at the others. “I am Groot?”
“No, it was nothing, Groot.” Peter informed the curious Flora Colossus. “Just Rocket being Rocket.”
Groot chuckled. “I am Groot.” He stated as he handed over his halopad that had YouTube opened to the video that caused so much strife within their family. Groot then went to his room upstairs.
”Oh... my... God!” Peter was shocked by what he thought Groot said. His understanding of Grootish still rudimentary at best, but the teenager’s body language and attitude in his voice told him all that he needed to know. He then glanced at the video that was on the tablet. “That little twirp!”
“What did Twig do?” Kraglin queried as he took a spoonful of soup.
“Groot was the one who secretly recorded Rocket waking up and posted it on the internet.” Peter told the others. “Oh, boy, wait until I tell Rocket this. He’ll never let Groot near his laptop, halopad or his cell phone ever again.” He predicted as he went to tell Rocket what he found out.
Surely enough, as soon as Rocket was told this, he confiscated all of his son’s electronic devices and destroyed them in the most spectacular way possible: by sending them up in a capsule and shooting said capsule with an untested, unauthorized, and illegal blaster gun. Rocket then uploaded the footage of the destruction to the internet so that Groot could experience the humiliation and embarrassment that he caused his father.
Groot deleted all of his social media accounts shortly after the video gained one million views and hasn’t been online since.——————————————————————————————————

The Joys of Raising a Teenaged Groot- Chapter 53: Pedal
It was the next day. The Guardians went back home to take care of some issues that arose while they were away. Rocket came by to hang out with Groot.
“Hey, buddy.” The raccoon greets his son. Groot coos in response. “What are you up to today?” He asks as Azrik walks in.
“Well, Groot, are you ready to go to therapy?” Azrik asks as he uses the patient lift to get Groot into his wheelchair. The teen nods as his aide straps him in before the three of them go to Groot’s daily session.
“Hey, Groot.” Zeliek waved to him. Groot points to where the pool door is, hoping that he’ll get to go swim today. “No, I’m sorry, but the pool is down for maintenance.” Groot was upset. He clearly didn’t want to do his regular exercises, instead desiring to do something fun. “I know, I know. Hey, how about you try riding a bike today?” Groot seemed interested at that prospect. “Alright, let’s get you set up.” He added as he went into the storage room and re-emerged moments later.
Azrik came back with a fully customized adult trike. The frame was coated in a deep blue flake which made it sparkle underneath the fluorescent lights of the facility. The seat was an oversized bicycle seat for maximum comfort. What separated it from normal bikes wasn’t just that it was a tricycle built for teens and adults; It was a trike meant to be used for people who couldn’t otherwise ride a traditional bike. The trike had a tall backrest with headrest, as well as an array of different seat belts and side supports in order to give people like Groot, who couldn’t sit upright on their own the support that they needed in order to do that. Another thing that set it apart was that the seat was adjustable so that no matter how tall someone was, they could ride and pedal it comfortably. The pedals were also a little bit different in they way they moved. Instead of a circular motion, the pedals mimicked an up and down motion, as if the person on the trike was walking. The handlebars were leather-wrapped and in an oval shape and that too was adjustable for comfort. There also was a removable panel to keep his knees separated and in a correct position as well as a detachable handle for Zeliek to pull and guide the trike if Groot didn’t feel like pedaling himself or steering.
“Now, Groot.” Azrik began as Groot’s other therapists came into the room. “I know that you’re not going to like what I’m going to tell you, but, you’re going to have to wear all these straps that are on the bike for you’re safety and the straps that are going to be on your feet are going to be extra tight so that they don’t slip off the pedals.” He added as he took off the teenager’s lap tray and various restraints on his chair in preparation to pick up the teen as Miska and Talia adjusted the seat height on the bike to get it ready for Groot to ride.
Azrik lined Groot’s wheelchair up next to the modified bike and he and Qu’lo then lifted the teen onto it. Zeliek then shifted Groot’s body so that he was sitting upright in the most optimal position. Then came the part that Groot hated: In order to keep him sitting upright, he had to wear the various seat belts that were on the tricycle. Groot didn’t mind the lap belt on him, but when it came to the ones that went around his chest and the straps around his feet, he cried at first, but after some coaxing, he calmed down shortly after. Groot also had to have the panel in between his legs, but he didn’t mind that compared to all the different belt buckles keeping him secured on the bike.
“Groot, are you ready to go for a ride?” Qu’lo asks as Groot plays with the strap on his chest belt. “No, no. Here, put your hands here so that you can steer.” He encourages the teen as he adjusts the handlebar so that Groot could reach it, which he did almost immediately. “Good, now are you ready to go?”
Rocket sensed his son’s nervousness. “Wait.” He croaked as he stepped forward. “Groot, do you want me to ride a bike alongside you?” He asked as Groot nodded. The raccoon then went to the storage closet where Azrik got the trike Groot was on and came back moments later riding a toddler-sized tricycle. This one was different in that it didn’t have all of the safety modifications that Groot’s trike had. “Ready to go son?” He looks at Groot as the teen nods.
Zeliek attached the guide arm in between the handlebars of the trike as an added precaution so that Groot wouldn’t crash into any walls. Qu’lo stood behind Groot as he gently pushed it to go forward. Miska and Talia sat on wheeled stools to guide Groot in pedaling the bike with his legs and to make sure that they were properly aligned. Rocket pedals his own bike and give Groot encouraging words to keep him going. The doting father also makes motorcycle noises as well as mimicking various stunts and tricks to keep Groot entertained and take his mind off of his therapy session. Azrik walks beside them and takes notes on Groot’s posture, his movements, and most of all, his mood.
Midway through, Groot stops pedaling and cries out, waving his arms.
Rocket gets off of his tricycle and kneels beside his son. “Groot, what’s wrong buddy? Are- are you tired?” He questions his son as Groot nods. “Okay, do you want to go back to your room?” Groot answers with another nod.
Azrik then knelt on Groot’s other side as he spoke to the teenager. “Groot, do you think that you can pedal the trike back to the therapy room or do you want me to get your wheelchair and you can get in it out here?” Groot points to Azrik as if to say that he wanted to get in his chair in the hall and could get back to the therapy room without feeling exhausted. “Alright, I’ll be right back.”
Azrik left and returned minutes later with Groot’s wheelchair. He and Qu’lo undid the restraints on the bike before picking the teenager up and getting him into his chair and buckling him in.
“Groot, you did such a good job today with the trike that I’m going to let you take an easy for the rest of the day.” Azrik stated as he and Rocket took Groot back to his room to rest and relax.
Rocket was so proud of his son that for the first time in a while, he didn’t complain as Groot was helped into his bed and turned on Bob Ross to watch on the TV for the rest of the day.—————————————————————————————————
