They come to you every so often, the dreams that cause you to wake up in a cold sweat, jaw stretched open as if locked in a scream that never seems to come. The crushing weight upon your chest, the vice-like grip upon your throat, the voice that's begging you to run.

You are no stranger to nightmares, no stranger to them. You had your first only a handful of weeks after coming to Akureyri, and they started to come only once every two or three months. That soon turned into once every month, and then every other week. Lately they’ve been happening nearly every night.

Which is normal. It’s fine.

Humans can have nightmares for a number of reasons. Anxiety, stress, changes to sleep schedule, sleep deprivation, apnea - anything that knocks their routine only slightly out of balance. The dreams might be the most human thing about you; although you have a feeling that normal humans don't start talking to the corpse-like being that's causing them, and you're pretty fucking certain the creature doesn't start spewing prophecies in any normal human's dreams.

The Mare is not here to kill you.

They're not really here at all.

(The Mare appears as a formless creature of smoke and ever-shifting shadow, impossible to define. In slivers of moonlight you might catch a glimpse of silver-white hair or skin as pale as death itself, but whether that's real or a figment of your unconscious imagination is anyone's guess.

It's a bit strange, honestly, that you've never seen the face of the stranger in your bed.)

Final Girl Blurb

Trans MC x Devon Low A possible scene that can happen if the MC is trans and on decent terms with Devon.

“What do you mean I know you from highschool? We never met before this job!” You snap as you spin on your heel towards Low.

“Of course you know me you stupid prick! We dated for three years and you dumped me to go to college across the country!!” What? Wait, WHAT?! Your eyes immediately begin scanning Devon’s face.

“I never dated…wait, JASON!?” Your jaw drops and you notice a few of your co-workers edging closer to the heated argument between you and your ex.

“It’s Devon now” She growls, her fists clenching at her sides and you immediately recognize the gesture, she is so close to simply slugging you. “Let’s take this somewhere else" she mumbles as she eyes your nosy co-workers. Grabbing your arm she drags you into an empty office and slams the door behind the two of you. “Now, stop acting like this is something bigger than it is,” she bites her lip as she looks you up and down, “I’m not the only one who’s changed. Who’d have thought we were both trans.”

That snaps you out of your thoughts and you close your mouth, readjusting your posture to your usual professional self. “Yeah, who would have thought,” you hesitate for a moment before you and Devon try speaking at the same time.

“You owe me...”

“I should tell you…”

You both stop and each fidget in your own way. A full minute goes by before she motions to you, “Will you at least tell me why you felt the need to break up? I just woke up one morning and you were already gone. I tried talking to your parents but they refused to even look at me, and none of our friends knew why you had just vanished overnight.”

“Oh, yeah, that…” You sigh and run a hand through your hair, your posture immediately slumping again. “I didn’t mean for that to happen. I wanted you to come with me like we talked about and I was going to wait a year for you to graduate so we could go at the same time, but when dad found out…well he flipped. I was trying to explain that taking a year to decompress and evaluate life was a common way to go but at one point I accidently let slip that we were dating and that just made things worse…it took weeks for my black eye to heal.” Devon’s eyes widen and she takes a step closer. “He actually hit you? I never thought…”

“Yeah, turns out there was something that could tip him from always angry into rage. Turns out having a gay son was what did it, though, heh,” you shake your head as you chuckle, “Nope nevermind, guess I'm still gay. Anyway he gave me a warning, leave for college immediately without telling anyone and he and mom would still pay my way through school, or stay and become homeless with no job.” You slump against the desk behind you, picking up the nameplate and fiddling with it. “I took the coward's way out, and I regretted it for so long, still do in some ways  I guess. After I managed to shake off the fear I did try to call you but you had blocked me on everything and no one else would even talk to me or let you know what had happened.”

“Actually Kate did tell me that you had been trying to find me, but I was still SO pissed off. I still am if you couldn’t tell,” she leans against the desk next to you, “But at least now I understand. So thank you for that I guess. Hey, so can I ask when you realized…” she trails off.

“Realized I was a woman?” she nods, “Second year of college, I had just met my, uh,” you cough into your hand as you try to say ex to which Devon just rolls her eyes, “Smoooooth”

“Right, yeah so I had just met my ex and we were hanging out with some friends and one of her friends was trans and I started asking her some questions, you know just the usual cis curiosity questions, but her answers started to make more and more sense you know? I started to realize that a lot of her answers applied to me, to things I kept secret. It took months of research and talking to a few of the other transwomen around campus before it fully hit me. Took another year for me to accept it and tell anyone.”

“How’d your parents react? I can’t imagine it was good.” You can’t help but snicker.

“I never told them. I held out till graduation and as soon as it was all said and done I immediately cut them out of my life. No calls, no messages, I just changed my phone number, moved in with my ex, and changed my name. So I basically did to them what they forced me to do to you, I just cranked it up to eleven. Didn’t even bother to tell them about the graduation.”

“Wow, well they kinda deserved it huh?”

“Eeeeyup” You reply, popping the p at the end. “So when did you?”

“Another time Nancy, okay? We just dropped some major bombshells on each other and I need some time to absorb everything.” She stands back up and heads towards the door.

“Yeah, no problem Devon, another time.”

“For what it’s worth…it’s nice hearing you saying my name.”

What if Horizon 3 had some romance options like the AC games, feel like it could make a lot of people happy, including myself. (I'm more of a kotaloy guy, no offense to erealoy)

Oof I'm SO in on romance for hz3. It's GOTTA happen for the last game.

So far, horizon has had quite a linear style of storytelling (except for the optional deaths like olin, nil, and drakka/yarra, which in on themselves don't really affect Aloy's character/narrative like something as big as romance would) So if romance were ever to be inlcuded in the games, sadly I kind of doubt it would be multiple choice.

Romance would be a huuuuge step for a character like Aloy's, so having multiple options/endings regarding her chosen partner would just dilute the narrative and her writing for me. It would def hit harder if she were to make the choice for herself as her own character, instead of being chosen by the player.

I gotta agree that everyone getting their preferred ship might be the a nice option though! But personally, I'm more on board with the devs telling the story they want to tell without making writing choices for the fans, y'know? (Like for example, choosing the top 4 fan fave characters to be romance options no matter in which stage their relationships with Aloy might be.)

Like I said, the devs mentioned aiming for one linear narrative for horizon in the hzd guidebook, so perhaps romance with solely one non-optional character or no romance at all might be what we'll get? Either way, only one of those choices would do. All in, or all out.

Regarding who that character could be, guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Additionally, she is set to attend the semi-finals and grand final. Players can decide to develop a friendship, maintain a professional relationship, or even pursue a romantic relationship if they play as a female MC. Notably, unlike the other romance options, Ilona isn't a great singer, and she hasn't been in a serious relationship before.

That probably shouldn't be much of a surprise; being the eldest son of a God and a giant is bound to give someone a bit of an ego. Being the eldest son of Thor means that ego is - unfortunately - probably earned. And having your father, mere moments before his death, make a point to tell you what a colossal fucking disappointment you are? Well, that's going to cause enough psychological damage to last a lifetime.

So yeah, maybe you should feel a little bad for him.

It's just that - well, it's just that it'd be a lot easier to cut him some slack if he wasn't such a fucking dick.

He’s arrogant. He’s reckless. He’s kind of an idiot. He’s stuck in a perpetual cycle of act first, think later, but later rarely seems to come at all.

Sure, some people might say that it’s sweet how much he cares about his siblings, and sure, a person could argue that the stupid jokes he tells are occasionally funny. Someone might even find themselves thinking that they could possibly, eventually…like him. Maybe. If he ever shuts the hell up.

For your own sake, just make sure you never tell him that. He’ll be absolutely insufferable if you do.

Random RO Facts? At 12AM? More common then you think. I got you, Anon (Now I must try not to fall asleep or spoil too much, which I’m terrible at ahhhhhh) It's a little long so- Under the cut it goes!

Ashborn

Ashborn lives and works with her mother, Lady Dalilah, at Arcana Herbs. Since Ash is rather strong and tall compared to Dalilah, they usually do the heavy lifting and deliveries, otherwise they’re behind the counter serving customers. Thanks to this, they already sort of know the MC, since they do the deliveries for The Wolf Den.

They are unintentionally the biggest charmer of all the romance options, being the best in social situations and the most friendly with others. Ashborn is also the scariest to anger, I thought it was Constantin… But nope, it’s Ash. Fear the one who is hard to anger.

She can’t fit through the majority of doors in Evenfall, Ashborn is too tall and often hits their head when not paying attention. Though, Ash isn’t the tallest Romantic Interest. (They were before Constantin and Sonja showed up. They also suffer head trauma from the doorframes.) 

Ashborn was born in a small desert kingdom outside Darkrow, travelling and ending up in Evenfall with their mother when they were around ten or eleven years old.

Heka

Not much is really known about where Heka comes from, other then the fact he lived in the kingdom neighbouring Ashborn’s homeland for a small time, it’s the place that actually inspired the current appearance of his human form. Not long after, Heka ended up moving to Evenfall to offer his medical skills, as well as following a strange feeling in his gut… 

Before even all that, Heka travelled the seas and explored a lot, so he gained a wide knowledge of the world in his time on ships. It also happens to be how he met Constantin back in the day.

Heka has a strong infinity with healing magic, magic not commonly granted to devils, making him a rarity among his people. His magic is the reason he decided to learn and become a doctor during his time at sea.

Every devil knows each other, the Infernal Realm isn’t big enough for devils to not meet at least once or twice in a lifetime. Sonja has never, at least in her time there, seen Heka in the Infernal Realm. This makes her wonder if Heka was even born there or if maybe he’s just far older then she is and left before her time. It’s a mystery. 

Constantin

Where to begin with Constantin… Well for a start, Constantin isn’t a local of Evenfall but was born in the Kingdom of Darkrow. Constantin was born to a vampire father and human mother, being raised mostly by her until being found and made into a Hunter. Sadly it’s a fate most half-blood children face. 

Constantin is a very skilled hunter, learning in his youth to use various weapons but favouring swords and his fists in fights. His preferred weapon is an Eastern-style blade that belonged to his father.

Love and emotions are something Constantin has to re-learn, his social etiquette is horrible and he has a hard time expressing his feelings through words. I used to think he’d also be horrible with physical affection and expressions, but after writing more it felt more right to make him someone who shows how he feels through actions. I also feel that despite him not eating human food, Constantin is a good cook and will do it often for people he cares for. It’s a habit he had to learn sleeping with a workaholic who doesn’t eat.

Constantin isn’t ever seen without his silver locket, it has a lot of sentimental value and is a reminder of what little humanity he has left. I’d say without it, there would be no chance of ever teaching him love again. 

Why not, a few more random facts- Constantin is extremely sensitive to touch, his hair, hands and back being the most reactive to physical contact. He also has a big hatred for normal fucking clothing. Shirts? Hates them. Sleeves? Awful. Pants that aren’t skin-tight? Pure shit. He likes his more revealing attire, maybe it’s the vampire in him…

Rowan

Rowan is a devout, an Ethereal born from a Warden and Elven race (more to be posted about Elven races soon), in Rowan’s case, they descend from a druid bloodline. Druids are creatures with a strong connection to nature and animals, some even having animal features (like Rowan’s fox ears). They grew up in the Ethereal realm and don’t know much about their mother or her side of the family, just what she was. 

Rowan is an old acquaintance of Sonja, the two having first met during their time serving the Infernal and Ethereal armies, but both will never admit to their past due to respect and not wanting to reopen old wounds. 

Their current reasoning for being in Evenfall is unknown but they know more about the current murders that they're letting on. Rowan seems to also have knowledge of MC’s visions and where the power originates. 

Rowan is the hardest to love, but quickest to hate, the devout purposely being a rather unbearable person to avoid having close friendships and relationships. Rowan avoids relations of any sort like the plague.

And since they are going to be announced soon as their character art is done, Eden and Sonja! The lovely ladies of Evenfall. 

Sonja

Sonja is part of the Evenfall Guards, having worked up the ranks to be the Guard Captain's right-hand woman. She’s also the only non-human guard in Evenfall, not to mention the only competent guard to believe the MC about everything going on. How a woman like her ends up a guard in a town like Evenfall, well, you’ll have to wait till she opens up for that story.

It’s hard to tell what exactly Sonja’s height is, she has terrible posture outside of fighting, but she’s estimated to be around 7’0 or taller. This officially makes her the tallest RO! She will use height to her advantage.

Sonja is a big drinker and a regular at The Wolf Den, but no one has seen the devil intoxicated… When not there, Sonja can usually be found training recruits, patrolling the streets or doing paperwork at the library (it’s more quiet then the guard quarters). 

Remember how I said she uses her height to her advantage? That’s in many scenarios… I won’t say she’s not a tough lady to romance, I’ll just say when she does fall (very hard I might add), MC better not be within range of walls or benches… or any surface Sonja can lift them on/against. 

Eden

Eden is the owner of the local library ‘Serpent’s Tale’ and a single mother to her young daughter, Fern. Eden doesn’t go out much because of her family and work, but she does share a unique friendship with Ashborn and Sonja, being the only one who can make them get along. 

Everyone in Evenfall loves Eden for her kind and caring nature, most not expecting her to be a Gorgon, a creature known for harming humans and turning them to stone with a single gaze. Eden is very careful though and keeps her human form up to protect everyone. Luckily, Fern is too young to use such magic yet, but she can’t create a human facade either.

The best part about Eden is that she’s the healthiest option for romance. She’s just very confident in the sense of how she wants to be treated and how she should treat her partner. Eden is just the sweetest woman and I’d say the only one who doesn’t have an incredibly slow start. When she cares and loves, she knows right away and isn’t going to waste time being coy about it. 

All the snakes on her head have their own unique personality and are named, which becomes a little confusing for her when they tangle together during her sleep. 

Eden loves dancing and music with a passion but often finds she can’t attend festivals or livelier nights at The Wolf Den due to running the library. 

Crowley

Lastly and obviously, Crowley! I love how some seem to want to know about him. Crow’s winning hearts he doesn’t deserve…

Crowley is the eldest of three siblings; Vivian, Carmilla and Roth. All of which he cares about dearly, even if one of them is a bit of a psychopath.

A fact not many know (unless they look far back in my post) is that Crowley is royalty, he simply avoids his duties because ruling a country that shuns what you truly are isn’t his thing and he has a bad relationship with both his mothers. One of them wasn’t the kindest to her kids in the beginning and the other simply did nothing to help or defend them. Love can make you weak. Despite the rough beginnings, Crowley’s a pretty big softy.

The cigarettes he smokes are just herbal and get their red colour from being marinated in human blood. It helps calm him down and keep his hunger under control. His thirst is beyond that of a normal vampire. 

Crowley holds important information about what might be happening in Evenfall. 

I feel like I’ve revealed too much but at the same time nothing at all… I’ll happily do more if anyone asks! I love writing about the gang and how they act and what they like. Maybe if I can find an OC ask post to reshare or something? I never know where to look for these things pfffft.

Ooh interesting take on the romance options, going off that, who do you think could be the realistic option for Aloy? I assume Erend is off the table since the writers said they have a sibling dynamic before (and tbh that’s how I see it in game), I know they’ve had multiple options of Avad’s responses and stuff about romance/returning to Meridian so maybe him? I also don’t think they expected Kotallo to be as widely loved in HFW as he is, so honestly I have no idea anymore truly (not to mention lack of female options), romance is trickyyyy in Horizon, so far it’s been hinted at so every possibility is there for a fandom if they want it but never stated outright. If they’re gonna include romance it’s gonna be a lot more subtle I think, like maybe a single kiss or a scene where she chooses a place to remain and be a part of a tribe as the end scene might work? (since Aloy is barely getting used to hugs at the moment lol), honestly I have no idea what Horizon 3 will bring but I’m so excited to find out!

Regarding my possible options, I only have two to be honest. Erend and Talanah.

On the other hand, I didn't quite sense a sibling dynamic with Aloy and Erend, tbh. Their relationship has been described 'heartfelt' in Erend's hfw character bio, so I mostly take "Sibling dynamic" as another way to admit they're really really close without having to put a 'possible-romantic-candidate' label on it for whichever reason, be it you dislike the ship/dont ship it or other. Overall the sibling stuff just sounds silly to me 🤷‍♀️

Then when it comes to Avad, his romance convo had me genuinely curious as to what its purpose might mean. Initially, I thought it was treating it as a mean to further his intentions with Aloy - which fair, it did - but I felt it unnecessary since his intentions were pretty clear back in hzd. If anything, him asking again it's probably meant to propose the idea of romance to Aloy for a future though/arc, and let the players know Aloy's actual stance on the subject during hfw. Avad isn't really present in the whole game either, so perhaps he might do a comeback in hz3 because of the last bit of the convo where he hopes to see Aloy again, but I don't expect to see anything significant to come from it. Man deserves happiness though.

And agreed! Regarding the level of focus on romance hz3 might take I don't expect it to have a huuge focus, since it's never been actually touched upon with Aloy except for small bits here and there. Subtle or recurrent small themes along the game might work, or perhaps a small moment at the end of the game where its implied she might want to run off with someone or not.

The dlc might keep some of my horizon hunger at bay, but I'll stay super hyped for whatever hz3 might offer!
