After Hazel visits
Mc: "I miss my wife Kimber, I miss her a lot."
Everything with Hazel in book 2 feels like a never ending gut punch.

A couple things I want from Book Two of The Night Market (@night-market-if ) because I've had brainrot on and off since finishing book one.
Spoilers if you haven't finished Book One.
• a gut wrenching scene of our MC clawing their way out of their own grave, fueled by rage and pain and heartbreak. And the visceral description of them making their way back to Hazel's or Gabriel's or Bella's, staggering through crowded streets like some eldritch being
• a scene where we see a lone raven keeping watch over the unmarked grave
• a new scar in the center of our MC's chest from where their ribs were literally ripped open and all the RO's crushing reactions to it.
• Milo knowing exactly when our MC wakes up because the Night Market seems to pause, take a breath, the laterns become almost impossibly bright for a moment and the air fills with the smell of gravedirt
• our MC having always known where Milo was hiding (if he's been hiding in the market) because our MC is The Night Market and there's nowhere he could truly hide. And one day he comes back to his hideaway to find them sitting at his table.

A Howl in the Night
Since The Night Market is currently in the process of getting edited and put on Steam, I've been missing it quite a bit!
Moreover, I've been missing my girl Hazel and the absolutely fantastic world around her.
So what better way to reminisce than creating more fic?
If you haven't read The Night Market, I highly recommend you check out @night-market-if ! It's an extremely awesome community and a phenomenal read. And this piece will definitely contain spoilers for the end of book 1!
Warnings for mentions of blood, the threat of violence, and toxic parents.
----
There was a presence in the house.
It hid well around Lucinda, a strange pressure on the air that disappeared when she set foot in a room.
She knew the bones of this house well. Every floorboard, every whorl of wood, every pane of glass was hers, swelling with power, down to the very foundation.
The presence was not.
It followed Hazel loyally, swirling around her, settling like a mantle on a queen. Where Hazel walked, the house warmed. Flowers bloomed in the dead of winter, glass polished itself, silver shone bright.
Everything was just a fraction smoother whenever her daughter was around, as if the universe wished to be kind to the girl.
As if the very Night Market had found Hazel broken, and fallen in love regardless.
Lucinda was not ignorant of the presence. In fact, she could not be.
The presence hid, but it protected.
In the morning, as much as morning in darkness could be, Lucinda once again tried to speak to her child on the subject of curses.
Hazel's shoulders tensed, and the presence grew ever-so-slightly.
"Hazel, if you only-" As Lucinda reached out to touch her daughter's shoulder, a spark snapped in the air, a pop of static so sharp it made her hiss and yank her hand back.
"Mother?" Hazel looked up, alarmed. "What happened?"
Lucinda waved her off. "It's fine, girl. Don't worry about it. Go wash the breakfast dishes."
Hazel bit her lip, but rose, collecting the plates. As she wandered off into the kitchen, Lucinda glanced down at her hand.
A single bead of blood welled up bright on her fingertip. A warning.
She smiled. "How cute. You'll have to try harder than that."
The air chilled around her. The teacup and saucer in front of her cracked, and plants grew the slightest hint of thorns.
"This is my house. You are not welcome here." Even as she went to pull on the magic around her, she felt the house…resist. It was a strange feeling. The magic that had once been hers seemed to hesitate, almost as if it was used to a gentler, kinder hand.
Her expression darkened. She raised up the hand that had bled, feeling the single bead of blood begin to rise.
And then, footsteps sounded behind her.
The presence vanished. Lucinda closed her hand, tucking it behind her back as she turned. "Hazel, dear, have you finished the dishes already?" She asked sweetly.
Hazel nodded. "Yes, Mother." She shifted on her feet, seemingly unaware of the conflict that had almost occured. "If you'll excuse me, there's a stray dog outside, I have to feed him. He comes by every once in a while for scraps." Hazel dipped past, a bowl of chopped meat and vegetables in her hand.
Lucinda sighed, watching her daughter pass. The presence had vanished, but that didn't mean it wasn't still around, and Lucinda remained on edge. "Girl, there are no dogs in…the…" She trailed off.
As Hazel opened the front door, stepping outside, she set the bowl down and flung her arms around a massive dog. With a long black muzzle and long dark brown fur, it wagged its tail slightly at Hazel's affections.
Mr. Billows wove around it, tail held high.
Lucinda was sure all her daughter saw was a dog. After all, that was what she was supposed to see.
The old witch, however, saw a wolf. Golden eyes like lamplight reflected back at her, staring her down like she was a rabbit on a hungry winter night.
Instantly she understood where the presence had gone. It had always been here.
It would always be here.
And it was making it very clear of who it was here to protect.
Lucinda raised an eyebrow.
Well, well. It seems Hazel's made some new friends while I was gone.
The wolf nuzzled Hazel softly before dipping its head down to eat.
Its eyes never left Lucinda's.

Irene Dunne and Myrna Loy in Thirteen Women (George Archainbaud, 1932)
Cast: Irene Dunne, Myrna Loy, Ricardo Cortez, Jill Esmond, Mary Duncan, Kay Johnson, Florence Eldridge, C. Henry Gordon, Peg Entwistle, Harriet Hagman, Edward Pawley, Blanche Friderici, Wally Albright. Screenplay: Bartlett Cormack, Samuel Ornitz, based on a novel by Tiffany Thayer. Cinematography: Leo Tover. Art direction: Carroll Clark. Film editing: Charles L. Kimball. Music: Max Steiner.
Myrna Loy was born Myrna Williams in Helena, Montana, but you wouldn't know it from the way Hollywood often cast her at the start of her career in the '20s and '30s. Her role in Thirteen Women is probably the purest example of her work as the stereotypical sinister Eurasian. She plays Ursula Georgi, whom the cop played by Ricardo Cortez scorns as "Half-breed type. Half Hindu, half Javanese, I don't know." (Actually, Cortez himself knew something about crossing ethnic lines: He was born Jacob Krantz in New York, but Hollywood changed his name to capitalize on the vogue for Latin lovers like Rudolph Valentino and Ramon Novarro, and later claimed first that he was French and later that he was born in Vienna.) Ursula seeks revenge on the women who belonged to a sorority at a girls' college and blackballed her when she sought admission. She seeks out a phony seer known as Swami Yogadachi (C. Henry Gordon), whose horoscope readings the girls sought out, and hypnotizes him into sending them poison-pen readings that predict dire events. Two of the girls, the sisters June (Mary Duncan) and May Raskob (Harriet Hagman), have become trapeze artists, and June is so unnerved by the fake reading that she lets May fall to her death during a stunt and goes mad as a consequence. As others fall prey to Ursula's schemes, some of the survivors gather at the home of Laura Stanhope (Irene Dunne), who thinks that their hysteria over the deaths is absurd. Laura is the single mother of a son, Bobby (Wally Albright), who is one of those cloyingly cute movie children -- he calls her "Mumsy." But even Laura's calm vanishes when Ursula makes Bobby her next target. In addition to being stupidly racist, the movie is sheer hokum, a cockamamie blend of revenge thriller and police procedural, and it was not much of a success at the box office, even after RKO cut 14 minutes from it after test screenings -- one of the reasons why we learn the fates of only 10 of the 13 women. One of the performances cut to only four minutes was that of Peg Entwistle, who played Hazel, the one who kills her husband and goes to prison. Entwistle was reportedly so despondent about her movie career that she climbed to the top of one of the letters on the Hollywood sign (reports vary on whether it was the H or the D) and jumped to her death. As for Loy, this was her last outing as a Eurasian vamp: The Thin Man (W.S. Van Dyke, 1934) changed her screen image to that of the witty and soignée wife, most often of William Powell.

Steam/book 2/General Update
Tumblr media
I am so excited to announce that the Steam Keys for Kickstarter will be sent out in the next few days. What does that mean? It means that we have a Steam release date for the public!!! Expect it to be out for purchase, September 3rd! (barring any terrible code breaks because I am so freaking nervous there is going to just be a blue screen of death for some reason).
I am also excited to announce that the Introduction to book 2 is in beta right now. And Chapter One is being written.  Book 2 will follow much the same format as book 1. With the chapters being released to the public for free on itch.io. Early access will be available on my Patreon. I will make an announcement when that is available but the intro will just be released to everyone immediately.
Along with that, keep on the lookout for another story brewing. More on that in the next week or so. But Fall is almost here and with it, so many creative endeavors to get us through the winter.
I am looking forward to hearing from you all again and crafting yet another tale.
With love,
Zinnia

A Memory Where My Heart Used to Be
It’s...angst hours.  I wrote this instead of going to bed, because I made a joke to a bunch of Discord friends about writing something for Alder, my Hazelmance, as a post book 1 thing.  And then I actually immediately needed to write it.  So...Have some pain and angst with your cereal, and as per usual, if you haven’t read The Night Market, you should go and check it out.  (Btw, this is spoilies for Chap. 12 of TNM Book 1!)
-
Hazel is no stranger to ghosts. She's hidden away in her house, knowing they're right out of view. That alleyway. The taste of smoke on her tongue. The cries she turns her back on.
She can't hide from the ghost of him.
It's in every whorl of the wooden floorboards. In the dust that swirls past candlelight. It's in the quiet of the house.
She sees him everywhere. As she walks out of her room, a tiny flame flickering in the candle holder, she heads further into her house and leans against the archway. Watching his ghost. The memory of him that yet lingers, like the house is just as desperate as she is to hold onto his essence for just a moment longer.
He's in the kitchen, doing dishes. His long, lean frame is curled forward, shoulders hunched slightly. There's an errant curl brushing over his forehead, one her fingers itch to slide over and tuck behind his ear. Any moment now, he'll turn to her, his smile wry, a little besotted. "It's getting long," she'll say. He'll wipe his hands dry on a dishtowel and take hers, bringing the knuckles up and brushing his lips over them, looking at her with those grass-green eyes. "I know," he'll murmur. She'll laugh at him. "Want me to cut it?" Hazel knows he'll blush, easy as can be, ruddy red overwhelming his swath of freckles. "Nah. You do this thing, sometimes. Where you run your fingers through my hair absentmindedly when you're readin'. I find it as soothin' as I do endearin'. You make me like havin' it long." Her heart will stutter in her chest at her ridiculous man, the man she never thought she'd have. Someone always willing to stand by her side, to take her side, to encourage her to blossom and grow. "That's the silliest reason I've ever heard," she'll mumble, and blush as he laughs low and warm. Alder will brush his fingers over her cheek. Press his lips softly to hers, and steal the breath out of her lungs. He'll lean a little forward, as if they weren't already alone together, and murmur in her ear. Sweet and low, as if he's sharing a secret just for her. "You make me want to be silly, Haze. Ain't no one I'd rather laugh with. Your laugh is the sweetest thing I've ever tasted."
"I love you, Hazel Albright."
She startles, the candle flickering, wax spilling on the floor. Her earlobe tingles, as if someone's pressed a kiss to the soft skin there. For a moment, it felt as if he'd said the words himself. But as she looks into the kitchen, it's dark and empty. There's nothing there. Just the lingering smell of dish soap, and Alder's sandalwood and vanilla aftershave. Hazel leans against the archway and feels her knees wobble. They give out beneath her as she slides to the floor. She doesn't even notice she's set the candle down next to her. Hazel pulls her knees up to her chest. Her lip wobbles. Her eyes sting. Alder is gone. "Mrrt?" Mr. Billows shoves his head underneath her hand. "Hi there," she whispers shakily. "Do you miss him too?" It's almost like he knows what she's saying. His little furry head turns to the top of the kitchen cabinet where he usually lays, often observing Alder as he works. Where the tall man can easily reach up and absentmindedly scratch his head. Mr. Billows looks at her and meows, a plaintive, sad sound. "Yeah," she says, but her voice cracks at the word, her vision swimming, feeling her breath coming sharp and quick. "Yeah. That makes two of us." Her bottom lip wobbles, and she whimpers as Mr. Billows pushes his way into her lap, forcing her to pet him.
She buries her face in his fur and cries.

dent’s eyebrow’s shot up. the woman sitting across from him had just witnessed to a heated phone call ( embarrassing to say the least , to lose his temper in front of someone who was less than an acquittance to him ) between him and an arkham spokesperson. her observation, however, had caught harvey off guard. something about it felt ominous and the district attorney couldn’t help but wonder if ms. albright was trying to threaten him. a cog in his brain, rusty and faulty, clicked the wrong way; perhaps he ought to bare his teeth at her, bark something back, SHOW HER THAT HE WAS NOT TO BE MESSED WITH. but harvey sat back and slid one of his hands into one of his blazer’s pockets.
there she was ; a silver dollar .
the moment he brushed his thumb over the coin, that ugly thought was tamed. lately it had become hard to ignore that part of him   ──   a violent fury dent had, no doubt, inherited from his father’s side. but he dealt with it the only way he knew how; by putting on his best vote-winning smile and deescalating.   “  ──  perhaps you ought to look into changing your major, ms. albright. you certainly seem to have a future in the psychiatric field . ”   he joked. harvey dent looked comfortable in his office chair, but in the depths of his pocket, his fingers continued to nervously turn and squeeze that coin. HIS COIN.    “ i’m sorry you had to hear that. i’m, uh, ”   his smile faltered for a second. “ i’ve got it under control . ” but, just like that, it came back, wide and confident and warm, dent looked like a guy you could trust your life with. a moment of silence arose between them as dent looked into becky’s hazel eyes.
“ you want anything? water? coffee? ”

His love for the sax came at age 10 and he started his career as a performer by 12. His influence comes from his early years living in Germany as a child of a military family. Later, he moved back to the US and spent several years on bases in Louisiana and California before finally settling on Colorado. Though he grew up listening to gospel and performed at the church, his father planted a seed by exposing him to various types jazz, including smooth jazz. His chief influence growing up was gospel performer, Angela Christie. While attending college at the Lamont School of Music at Denver University and Metro State, he began listening to urban saxophonist like Gerald Albright, who later became his mentor, and David Sanborn. The road wasn’t always easy for him as he ran into many bumps, edgy twists and turns on his road to becoming a recording artist and renowned performer. It was only by his faith in God and a very driven determination that he triumphed gracefully over adversity. Harold has performed with artists such as Hazel Miller, Selina Albright (daughter of saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist, Gerald Albright), The Hot Lunch Band, Jessie Campbell from the Voice, George Huff from American Idol, Andrew Woolfolk of Earth, Wind & Fire, Timothy Wright, Israel Houghton and Grammy Award winning Gospel artist Kirk Franklin. There’s no shortage of organizations that he has performed for, like the Colorado Black Arts Movement. He is an active member of the Potter’s House of Denver, where he plays in the band. He’s also performed for professional sports organizations, such as the Denver Nuggets and the Kansas City Chiefs. Recordings: 3rd Degree Set Apart Expressions of Christmas Funk It Up (produced by James Roberson and Gerald Albright)

Saw this picrew and decided to use it to make my MC Marian, and Hazel Albright from @night-market-if (Not totally accurate of course because the hairstyle is wrong but I went for hair texture over hair style and there was no hazel eye colour option. Meanwhile Marian is surprisingly accurate because they did have a purple eye colour option and I was definitely thinking of an outfit like this when she was buying clothes.)
But still - them!!! Cuties!! <3
