WIP Zaberial
This is something that I had started before writing anything for Aketho. I cleaned up a few things for it, so hopefully, it doesn't read like a mess, lol I'll probably be writing more for Zabe in the future, but they'll be more one-shots than a series. --------------------------------------------------
Zaberial sighed softly as he hunched over his desk, working through the ship’s current supplies and budget. He’d love to punch whoever told him there’d be no paperwork as a smuggler, apparently they didn’t have other mouths to feed on their ship. With the addition of Guss to his crew of misfits, they were in need of more of everything and then some. The Mirialan groaned and leaned back in his chair, running a hand down his face—maybe he could get Akaavi to smack him over the head a few times so he could forget how to do math and then ask someone else to do the budget…
When the door to his quarters opened, he almost jumped for joy. Finally! A distraction from the numbers!
“Captain, there’s a call on the holo for you,” Risha said as she entered the room.
“Oh yeah? Did they happen to say who they were?” Zaberial asked, picking up his coffee to take a sip.
“He said his name was Leland.”
Zaberial choked on his drink.
“Please tell me you’re joking,” he managed to get out between fits of coughs, looking back at her with wide lavender eyes.
Risha looked highly amused as she crossed her arms, hips canting to the left. “I’m not. I’d ask why you look so shocked, but considering the man has your face I’m going to take a wild guess that he's your sibling.”
“Yeah,” the captain replied, making a face. “He’s my twin brother…and I’m pretty sure I know why he’s calling…how pissed off did he sound?”
“On a scale of one to ten? I’d give it an eight,” she replied, raising an eyebrow.
“Fuck me,” Zaberial groaned, running a hand down his face again.
“I can’t help you there. We’ve long since established we are better friends than lovers,” Risha teased, smirking as the captain got up.
“Har har,” he grumbled, walking past her towards the common area. He put on his best smile as he stepped up to the holoterminal. “Lee, big bro, what an unexpected surprise! How have you been?”
“Don’t even with me right now, Zabe,” growled an older Mirialan, the deep baritone of his voice echoing around the commons. “Why in the hell do you have a hundred million credit bounty on your head? By Rogun the fucking Butcher of all people!”
“And here I thought it was from Rogun the Cuddler of Kittens, thanks for clearing that up,” Zaberial quipped. He winced when his brother crossed his arms and glared at him further. “Look, I can explain,” he sighed, rubbing the back of his neck, “Believe it or not it wasn't my fault…for once.”
“Oh, this oughta be rich,” Leland said, gesturing with his hand for the younger man to continue, “Let’s hear it.”
“Right. So, I had this gun run to Ord Mantell….” the smuggler started, detailing his failed delivery to Vidu and how his ship was stolen by the slimebag Skavak. He followed it up with the other wild deliveries he made for Risha before concluding with meeting Nok Drayen and finding the old gangster’s lost treasure. By the time he finished his brother was rubbing the bridge of his nose.
“That’s pretty much it in regards to Rogun,” Zaberial said, shifting from foot to foot as he waited for his brother to respond.
“I can’t believe you lost Pop’s ship,” was the first thing out of Leland's mouth.
Behind him he could hear Risha snicker while he saw Corso try to hold in laughter. Zaberial glared at them both before turning back to his brother.
“Ok, one, it’s my ship—I bought it off of Mom and Pop when they retired. In full, I might add,” he growled, “Two, I didn’t lose the ship, it was stolen. And not only did I get it back, I made that thieving scum sucker pay, thank you very much. And three, that is what you took away from that whole story? Really!?”
His brother just smirked and shrugged.
“You ass. If I did that to you when you told me about winning the Great Hunt you’d have thrown a hissy fit,” the captain scoffed.
“No, I wouldn’t have.”
Zaberial couldn’t help but smirk at the offended tone in his brother’s voice. “Uh huh, sure. That pout says otherwise.”
“I am not pouting,” Leland argued.
“Tell that to your lower lip,” Zaberial snickered.
“You’re seeing things,” his brother growled, waving the captain’s comment away.
“Uh huh, right, sure,” he said before raising his voice so the young slicer he knew was there could hear him. “Hey Mako, I’m not seeing things, right? Leland’s pouting?”
“He’s pouting,” she confirmed from off holo.
“Mako!”
“Ha! You’re the best!” the captain cackled before addressing Leland again, “Please tell me Mom and Pop have adopted her already.”
“They’re working on it,” Leland said in all seriousness, “They’re still trying to convince her to let them.”
“She should!” Zaberial said in encouragement.
“I still don’t see why they would want to,” Mako said as she stepped into frame. “I’m no one special.”
“You kidding!? You’re a gem, Mako,” the captain said with a wide grin. “Besides, I always wanted a little sister I could team up with against Leland.”
The bounty hunter sighed and shook his head, “And suddenly I’m starting to have second thoughts about this—one younger sibling is bad enough.”
“It’s not like that would stop us from teaming up on you,” the slicer pointed out.
“True, it would just be official,” Zaberial tacked on, snickering when the older man had a very ‘done with it all’ look on his face.

Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
Thanks for the ask (and for your patience!).  I’ve been stewing over this one. It’s a little wide-ranging,but it does come down to one major meta I’m working on.
In terms of callbacks and clues, I often write multiple pieces at the same time.  As a result, I weave in certain threads that seem to recur sporadically through the storylines... but they’ve been added at the same time. So it’s not like I’m keeping a running tab on “hmm, need to put this in the fic.”
One of the things I really like to do is establish enduring quirks that absolutely don’t matter in canon.  For example, I’ve invented the Saturday morning adventure characters of Shiv Starrunner for Guss Tuno (who appears all the way back in Love in the Time of Technoplague) and Princess Power-Tart for Risha (first appears as bandages in The Grand Reveal, simply as an alternative to Shiv Starrunner bandages, but now I have entire premise for her).  Do these fictional fictional characters have absolutely any bearing in canon?  Nope.  Totally irrelevant... but we all know people who still love their childhood fandoms -- they can sing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme song on demand.  It helps give depth to characters that are all too readily rendered as flat for ease of plot (which is why I get hung up on my smuggler crew; they each have a thing).
I have a similar headcanon with Jace, Satele, and Theron all (secretly) liking the same high fantasy holonovel series; Jace watches the holofilms since historical nonfiction is more his jam, but Satele and Theron read the books.  They’re all completely unaware they like the same thing, and it gives the reader something more about well-established characters in canon without interfering with any major plotpoints.  Same goes with the headcanon/fanon that Jace was a swooper like Theron (I’m not the only one to think of this).
I’ve spoken before about my enjoyment of trope inversion and undermining anticipated stereotypes.  Obviously, my smuggler is one of those efforts:  completely uneducated by any galactic standard, yet intelligent.  In it for the credits, but she has a conscience.  Absolutely chaotic, but though there be madness, there be method in it (and it drives Risha right up the wall -- it’s the most fucked up logic that SOMEHOW works out every time). Gronn the Bounty Hunter is, in theory, in it for the money, but he’s absolutely terrible at actually collecting.  The three Jedi I’ve introduced in the Yavin fic were originally one, massively screwed up Jedi -- they each fulfill a certain stereotype.  Fria, the innocent and the unworldly; Romjomos the zealot due to lived experience as a slave; and Norwan... without spoiling, I’ll just say he does not want to give anything more to the Order than he already has.
The same goes for NPCs -- I like reworking characters so that they remain canon compliant and yet there’s a little more to them.  This goes for the obvious, prominent characters like Theron and Lana, but I also enjoy the background characters.  I love letting Trant make trouble, and he’s going to get lots of opportunity prior to Theron’s departure from the Republic.  T3, Rogun, and Alilia are also characters that receive development....
But everything here goes to building the tragedy of lost potential.  The doors not opened, the choices not taken, the weekends not had, the parties not attended--  that’s one of the metas I will push as Yavin turns to Ziost and the Eternal Empire.  All the future things people hoped to do after Yavin -- the trajectories their lives would take -- are altered by Ziost and Eternal Fleet.  There is no way back. In some other universe, they did something different and their life is completely unrecognizable.  But that’s not here and now.  That universe is dead.  Some of the characters I’ve made will fall, as will some of the characters I’ve built up. They’re OCs or we never see them again after Vanilla, so who cares what happens to them?
If I’ve done my writing well enough, the reader does.

Tension
Author’s Notes: Sexual content ahead, albeit fairly SFW. Someone sent me a prompt.
Tumblr media
The tension had been building for weeks.
Her victory over the Voidwolf at Corellia – and the ‘conclusion’ of her entanglements with Rogun the Butcher – had led to many new opportunities for Captain Bas’riish and her crew aboard the Kikalekki's Gambit.
Her decision to dissolve the smuggler’s fleet the ‘Wolf had assembled – after unleashing it on the Imperials at Corellia – had further built on that tension.
Exiled queens looking to fund planetary revolutions hated to leave money on the table.
In the absence of daily attempts on her life, it had also meant that Bas’riish was finding herself increasingly distracted concerning her first mate and chief engineer.
To that end, with a few moments to catch her breath while they were docked at Port Nowhere, she’d made her way back to the ship’s engine room… and immediately caught her breath at the sight of the protruding posterior of her quarry.
Bas’riish licked her lips as she gazed down at the woman who currently had her head and upper body stuck inside an engine vent. Those tight pants she was wearing accentuated everything.
“You overworked the fuel injectors again.” The rebuke from within the vent came before the lovely green Twi’lek captain could start breathing again. “I told you before that would gunk up the sub-light drives.”
Risha Drayen had no doubt heard her walking in across the floor panels. Hell, she probably could tell which member of their crew it was just from their footfalls.
Clever bitch. Bas’riish smirked, continuing to gaze at the engineer’s butt.
“Sorry about that.” She finally spoke. “We had to rush to make the deadline on that shipment.”
She tilted her head.
“You need any help in there?”
A long sigh could be heard from the vent.
“Just hand me that power calibrator, alright?”
Her lips impishly smirked as Bas’riish picked up the tool, sliding it into the outstretched hand… and then taking that hand in hers.
“My hand?” the irritated voice came again.
Bas felt her own voice grow softer.
“Got a minute?”
Another sigh escaped the vent.
“Sure. Hold on.”
Bas’riish finally released the hand as Risha ducked her head and backed out of the vent.
Damn. Bas’riish thought to herself as the engineer pulled off her goggles. Even sweaty and tired, her tank top clinging to her body (and showing off no small amount of cleavage), Risha was still incredibly beautiful.
And the tension in both women had been slowly building up for a long while.
“What’s up?” Risha asked, raising an eyebrow.
Bas’riish swallowed again. Shavit. She never felt nervous. Why was this situation any different from the countless others she’d been through?
Because she knew Risha. She cared about Risha. She trusted Risha.
And right now, she wanted Risha.
“You’ve been working hard.” She began.
Risha rolled her eyes.
“Thanks for noticing.”
“…. And we’ve both been through a lot. These last few weeks.” She reached her hand up and gently caressed Risha’s cheek. ”You’ve put up with a lot from me.”
Risha’s eyes widened for half a second but then she closed her eyes and let out yet another sigh. Where the first two sighs communicated frustration, this one reflected something else entirely.
“So.” She leaned in. “I was wondering if I could buy you a drink.”
Risha’s eyes opened and she swallowed. The engineer slash exiled noble slash criminal mastermind usually acted so much wiser and more knowledgeable than her years would suggest, but right now, the look in her lovely brown eyes was younger and vulnerable than Bas had ever seen her.
“I could go for something.” She whispered, leaning in towards Bas’riish.
Their lips met. Soft. Inviting. Comforting.
Hands soon followed. And then much more.
Regardless of what else happened, the two women were going to work through their tension.

The problem with the twiiiist about Rogun the Butcher in the Smuggler storyline is that it's this weird heel face turn instead of a shared bigger enemy thing.
I suspect it's inspired by things like the bit at the end of The Rocketeer where the mobster helps in the finale because, while he's a crook, he's an American, damn it, and the bad guy is a Nazi. But that's a fun/cool moment, not a twist. He wasn't secretly good all along or secretly...whatever the fuck would be the equivalent to what we're told about Rogun, he just has standards.
Rogun as Evil Has Standards could work. (You still have to rewrite all of the supposed ways that the Smuggler has unknowingly helped the Empire to actually, you know, make sense with that version of events.) But the I'm The Republic's Monster version really doesn't. At least not without some evidence that he is actually doing beneficial to the Republic things.
It's still a damn hard sell with everyone, including Guss* (who worked for him) telling you what a monster he is. Which makes either dropping the twist or making it an Evil Has Standards moment instead would make a hell of a lot more sense.
Ugh. I still have to decide how much of this nonsensical (yet somehow full of potential) storyline I actually want to keep. There's something weirdly compelling about it, even though a lot of it frustrates me and the genderousness makes me want to fistfight the writer(s) in a Denny's parking lot at midnight.
*I swear, like 90% of Guss is dialogue is either him proving what an idiot he is or saying something about how Rogun eats babies. (not an actual quote)

Courscant SnapShots
Title: Courscant Snap Shots
Fandom: SWTOR/Star Wars The Old Republic
Featuring: Seth Rand and Corso Riggs
Synopsis: Just a couple of moments during the Smuggler storyline on Coruscant.
Word Count: 938 words
Author Notes: Seth has a VERY good reason for wanting to catch Skavak…and he’s not too worried what happens to the bastard either.
(Coruscant 1)
“So, we’re gonna catch Skavak, Captain,” Corso said, a hint of concern in his voice. “I know that, but…what are you going to do when we do catch him?”
Seth turned his head from his drink, the sideways smirk that Corso had come to find as ever-present on the Mirialan’s face disappeared and a dark expression came over his eyes, darkening the violet irises. “I’m going to kill him, Corso.” There was no joke, no amusement, not even sarcasm evident in the man’s voice. Corso blinked and for a brief moment, it was like he was looking at someone else.
“Oh,” Was all Corso could say. It wasn’t the answer that had him speechless, it was the change in the Captain’s tone and demeanor.
“Does that bother you, farm-boy?” Seth asked, his expression smoothed but the dark look remained in his eyes.
(The rest is under the cut for length!)
“Well, no, not really,” Corso answered, “I mean I did figure you would, he stole your ship and Skavak deserves it, no doubt in my mind, Captain.”
“I’m not killing him over my ship,” Seth said, taking a sip of his whiskey. “Well, not just my ship.”
Corso frowned, “The cargo? Leaving us stranded on Ord Mantell and getting you slapped with a bounty by Rogun the Butcher?”
“No,” Seth said, downing the rest of his whiskey and standing up from his seat at the table. “My daughter is on that ship…”
Corso froze, staring at the white-haired Mirialan as the Captain made his way to the bar and paid for their dinner. The Captain had a daughter? That threw the Mantellian for a loop. That was completely unexpected, then again, it wasn’t his business either. But this bit of information made some things about the Captain make a lot more sense, such as the Captain’s treatment of the kids they’d come across during their chase of Skavak here on Coruscant. The Captain changed tracks and their priorities on the credit chit for the children they’d encountered in the Hydrosupply…and the young girl in Justicar Territory.
Corso had noticed the almost fatherly-like tone in Seth’s voice and later the way he’d put himself in harm's way automatically to protect the girl’s brother… Yeah, many things made more sense. Skavak was more than just a dead man.
“Let’s go, Corso,” Seth called, pulling the Mantellian from his thoughts. The sideways smirk was back as the Captain waved him to follow.
(Coruscant 2)
The ship was just beyond the hangar door and Fabizan was a blubbering mess on the floor. Seth kept his blaster, Mischief, pointed at the Bith as he glared the ship salesman down. “You open this hanger door or I’ll space you here and now.” Nothing was going to stop him from getting into that hangar…but it would be easier if the Bith would open it. The Bith muttered something incoherent and Seth lowered his head as he pressed the barrel of his blaster against Fabizan’s head.
“Last chance,” Seth growled in a low tone, from deep in his throat.
To the Bith’s credit, he nodded and fumbled in his tunic pockets for something. “Yes, yes…” he muttered as he sent a remote signal to the door. The Hangar opened with the slightest of groans, revealing his ship, Lucky Strike, sitting there.
“Good,” Seth said, keeping his blaster where it was. “Any surprises I should be aware of?”
Fabizan shook his head, stuttering out his answer, “N-no, Promise.”
“Good,” Seth nodded, “One more thing, if I see you again, with Skavak… I’m not going to be talking when I take off your head.”
If the Bith’s eyes could get any wider, they’d swallow his head. He nodded vehemently.
Seth stepped back, holstering his blaster. “Get out of here….” He said and without a second look, he took off into the hangar bay, running towards his ship. He’d check the ship over later, there was one thing he needed to see, needed to make sure was safe above all others. He had the hatch open in a matter of seconds and stepped through, his blaster in hand. There was no telling if Skavak had any other idiotic goons on the ship… He carefully made his way through the main corridor towards the second cargo bay. He hoped against hope that K’Teena had hidden herself in the secret compartment he’d installed just for her. It had been days, weeks since Skavak had stolen the ship…
Entering the cargo bay, he approached the back. He could sense another person, unfamiliar on the ship and he’d deal with them soon. But first… At the back bulkhead, he paused, crouching down, he knocked on a panel in a specific rhythm. There was a moment of silence that seemed to last forever, his heart pounded in his chest. He could sense her presence nearby, like the morning dew as the sun first rose in the morning.
He rapped his knuckles on the panel one more time. Come on, sweetheart, he thought.
Then the panel opened and a small blue Twi’lek head popped out.
“Papa!” K’Teena cried out, launching herself out of the secret compartment and straight at Seth. He caught her with ease, nearly crushing her to him as he wrapped his arms around her. Relief flooded through him. She was safe.
“Papa, I’m so glad you’re back,” she said into his shoulder, a trembling in her voice. He could sense her relief at his return and that alone was enough to have emotion clog his throat for a moment. He held her, refusing to let her go just yet. K’Teena clung to him and he felt the small fear beneath her relief that if she let go, he would disappear again.
“I’m here, Angel Face,” he whispered past the lump in his throat, holding her tightly as he dropped a paternal kiss onto the top of her head. “You’re safe.”

Captain Adira Chudo, the Voidhound
Adira Chudo was born on Ryloth in 3665 to Lin and Dinek Chudo.  Dinek’s grandfather had developed a faster way of manufacturing weaponry and smaller walkers for the Republic, which had made him very rich, very quickly in his own youth.  Unlike his grandfather, Dinek solely cared about making money, turning him into the kind of father who handed his daughter toys and asked her to leave him alone.
Adira, for her part, did love money; however, she loved making friends and adventure more.  Once Dinek bought her a spaceship for her 16th birthday, Adira would spend entire weekends flying around wherever she could, often giving her mother small heart attacks.  As an adult, Adira got into smuggling, though it was at least semi legitimate; spice was an absolute no-go.
When she was about 10 years old, Adira was shopping with Lin when they ran into a young Mirialan girl who had been separated from her own mother.  Adira was able to make the other child laugh within a couple of minutes, and helped her find her mother.  This girl, Lehusa Medora, became one of Adira’s best friends, and would later lead Havoc Squad in the Republic military as an adult.  Furthermore, Lehusa casually mentioning that her mother, an employee of Dinek’s, was rather poor would force Dinek to pay his employees more, only to keep the rest of his family off his back.
Eventually, Adira’s adventures in smuggling led her to Ord Mantell, where she hoped she’d find new coworkers in Skavak and Corso Riggs.  Only the farmboy proved loyal, as Skavak stole her ship, prompting a chase that led to Coruscant, where she was reunited with her beloved ship.  Skavak is one of the few people that Adira genuinely hates, and one she was more than happy to shoot in the chest.
While Adira was loyal to the Republic, her busting her ass as a smuggler was both in the hopes of keeping Rogun the Butcher at bay, as well as proving herself capable to her father.  Adira has ADHD, and as such, is highly excitable and energetic--on a good day.  She is somewhat airheaded, but when given the chance, is quite intelligent and more importantly, kind.  She will never turn away someone who needs help, or fail to make someone laugh.
Eventually, Adira’s crew grew to include Corso, Risha Drayen, Bowdaar, Akaavi Spar, and Guss Tuno.  Towards the end of her conflict with the terrible Voidwolf, Adira realized that her relationship with Corso would result in another crewmate: she was pregnant with her first child.  Teeubo Riggs was born shortly after the Battle of Ilum, and would take up smuggling as an adult himself.
A DNA test led Adira to find that she had family that she didn’t know of: a young Sith Lord named Aayes Chudo.  When Dinek refused to acknowledge his bastard daughter and attempted to kill her, Adira shot him first.  She later sold the company to a rival of his, a Duros named Chait Krue.  She built a solid relationship with Aayes despite their opposing factions; Adira would be overjoyed once Aayes left the Empire for good.
Unfortunately, Adira’s relationship with Corso collapsed after the Makeb crisis, as he realized that his wife would never want to slow down until old age demanded it.  They divorced shortly before the Dread War.  In the interim between the Dread War and the Revanite crisis, Lehusa introduced Adira to SIS Agent Cassie Quax(who belongs to @abyss-wolf ).  The two began a strong and happy relationship.  Teeubo had joint custody with his parents, on top of having a second mother and a baby sister through adoption named Niika.
While Battlemaster D’leah was in carbonite, Adira and Cassie traveled the galaxy helping the little people, as well as helping slaves escape bondage.  Adira’s ship would become a huge asset to the Alliance. Their biggest task so far is taking down the Brothers, a slavery cult in bed with the Empire.

Is there an NPC in the game you'd ever long-term ship jólene with?
Besides Rogun the Butcher? XD The obvious answer would be Darmas if he hadn’t betrayed her. But the other one would be Numen Brock.
He’s gots some guts, which she likes, and he knows how to fence goods to make some cash, so that’s ALSO good. He sticks to his guns and his words, which she absolutely RESPECTS, but he also...speaks to that deep seated yearning for connection that she sorely wants. Unlike Corso, Numen FEELS like he could be home. And he even seems like he might be convinced to leave and go with her once the fighting is done on Balmorra.
But, unfortunately, her quests got in her way and her dodging Rogun’s bounty hunters kept her from going back. And then other stuff happens which makes her more jaded and eventually leads her to Rogun.\
BUT, to answer your question properly (because i miss read it a bit and had a thought spew XD), in an AU, YES. She is shipped hard with Numen Brock and he helps rebuild that trust in her and she gets less and less ruthless and they handle Rogun together and go on to be amazing freeelance smugglers.
EDIT: Lol, I read that question right the first time. :V I'ma doof!
