Walk the Line of Morality: 10 Fantasy Novels with Thieving Protagonists
In the usual realm of swords, sorcery, dragons and direwolves, aren’t we all occasionally partial to a protagonist that’s a bit, well… shifty?
I’m not talking about the big muscle-bound, honour-bound heroes that are as predictable as the British weather, I’m talking about the sneak-thieves, the tricksters, the rogues!
There’s something devilishly enjoyable about a character that walks the line…

so I actually really enjoy the OG SQQ, he is such an angsty and dramatic bitch absolutely stuffed with trauma and terrible coping behind that ice cold veneer and it’s a shame we didn’t get more of him. there’s just so much to explore with him and he gets cut out and missed by his sect exactly 0% which is pretty heartbreaking.

it’s always so interesting to me when people state that they just “didn’t trust” jin guangyao from the very first moment he appears on screen as meng yao in cql because like
do you not recognize how your suspicion of a sex worker’s son on sight, before he’s done anything at all except endure humiliation during the cloud recesses welcoming ceremony, is the exact same attitude shared by the rest of the cultivation world?

Had the sudden thought of somehow Desmond was dropped kicked into Dragon Age/Thedas, specifically the Inquistion and received the glowy mark of doom. And on one hand, it's all here we go again, and on the other hand, someone keeps a leash on Desmond because he keeps trying to run away
Well, we can’t really blame him considering he just got booted from being a chosen one to another chosen one in a different world where he knows nothing at all XD
And in a world where one of the major faction is called the Templars?
He’d be wary of them from the get go, that’s for sure. XD (not that the mages wouldn't send alarms all around his mind)
Honestly, he’d probably go his own way and travel the new world he finds himself in, trying to understand the geopolitical status of the world.
Well, that seemed like a tall order so he would probably focus on Thedas first.
He’d also build his own Brotherhood along the way.
In his defense, it’s less building it and sorta accidentally setting it up because he kept saving random people during his travels and feeling the need to help them.
He calls them travels.
Leliana calls them ‘Desmond running away again’.
The funny thing though… he’s just traveling but he gets roped into the power struggle all over Thedas and gets railroaded into the original plot.
Not that he knows this.
Perhaps it’s simply fate.
Perhaps the Calculations is still at play.
Perhaps… a certain ‘hedge mage’ is at fault.
Desmond definitely isn’t sure.
He’s just trying to live his life in this new world he finds himself.
.
Oh.
And because this is the kind of curse Desmond is given whenever he gets isekai’ed to another world/game/franchise.
Yes.
The companions and advisors want to bang him.
The people he recruits for his Brotherhood though thinks of him as a mentor and more of a parental figure.

I just completed Pasqal's personal quest, and I have... THOUGHTS. Spoilers below!
It turns out all the Haneumanns are his mentor, and they created Nomos, the ship spirit. Suspicious of its nature as a tech blight, they researched a way to kill machine spirits as the ultimate precaution. The choices presented was to let him become the circle again, or to assimilate the 6 members and let go of their epiphany, or just be Pasqal while letting go of the epiphany.
I could not choose, because on one hand, I hope that Pasqal could be himself, for I have grown very fond of the tech-priest. On the other hand, the knowledge, albeit dangerous, should not be lost. So I told him that I want him to say while preserving the knowledge, but he explained it wasn't possible. In the end he chose the second path, and when I talked to him, it was... Well, he had changed a lot. Part of him was still there, but I wonder whether that part would persist.
The problem is, I do not hate the circle. In fact I love the concept/entity, but I also love Pasqal. Not letting Pasqal ascend feels like I am limiting his potential, and this is something I could never do. And yet once he ascended, he would lose part of himself that I have come to love dearly. The angst... The angst is too much.
I should probably look at alternative outcomes later before making judgement, but for now I shall stick to my choice and see how it will end. However I have an inkling that no ending will truly please me, and that is ok- because I recognise the layers and the beauty of them, even if they are all, to some degree, tragedies.
And I thank Owlcat for creating such an fascinating character and an interesting quest. As someone who has always loved the Adeptus Mechanicus faction, the portrayal of Pasqal and other tech priests are very on point and incredibly nuanced.
Edit: I finished the game, and I got the ending that his circle went after the Dark Mechanicus. I am... 60% sure that Pasqal might be no more, but Amarnat Collective is back. I don't know what to feel about this... I am sad that the rogue trader has lost his friend, but on the other hand, the rogue trader doesn't want to be the one who prevents Amarnat from forming- it will be akin to murder. So yeah, I am really conflicted.

Gray Wing
(Forgot to mark this as a request! But it's okay, I'll get to the next one as it was a duo request :D)
Gray Wing is definitely one of the more peaceful and relatable protagonists. A good father, too, adopted a ton of kids and just kinda enjoyed life outside of all the war and brutality his brother started up. Overall, a chill dude. Would take as my father figure

(Ooc) would the goddess toriel design be her dark world design or would it be different?
yes, it's her dark world design! it's been a while and we've tried out a couple different concepts behind the scenes (you can see an old one that hued closer to the popular "mage toriel" take in the art from january that gasterofficial posted). but now i finally have smth i like that's more unique to our blog story! the idea was always that her dark world outfit would be this goddess-like outfit that's far more grand than toriel herself, to really emphasize the fact that she is an ordinary woman that unwittingly wields the power of a god.

ig we don't know a thing abt its character creator or classes or story, but do you have a plan for who your da4 protagonist will be?
oh not at all haha. i’m only an ideas person when you give me something to work with, i’m no good for making something out of nothing and i couldn’t commit to anything without knowing the first thing abt the story... all of my da guys are designed knowing the whole game in advance lmao and even then i had false first playthroughs that i no longer think abt. i probably won’t have an idea until i’ve already played through the game once JGHJSFJK let alone when it’s not out for like a year and all i know is that solas and varric are there and we go to weisshaupt maybe

If you're gonna put together an list of "asexual and aromantic" media, you need to put in at least some effort to actually find aro media to put on your list. Otherwise just fucking be honest and call it an asexual media rec list.
