Y'know, I've been talking about Rogue Legacy 2 a lot, but this moment from the original game is still something I'll never forget
Tumblr media
For as story-light a game as Rogue Legacy 1 was, it really nailed the ending (and beginning).

Ok so here's a post about me drawing and ranting about obscure video game characters again
Look at him. Estuary Enoch. He's literally the definition of Evil Gremlin Wizard and I'm here for it.
(More doodles and thoughts under the cut)
Tumblr media
Reasons why I love him:
- Big hat from where he just Appears
- I haven't finished the game but apparently he's like, an undead prince infected by an evil tree disease ???? Idk can't wait to know the full Lore
- His boss battle is so fcking hard for no reason like you beat him normally, you think you have won and then A GIANT TREASURE CHEST MIMIC APPEARS AND BEATS YOU TO DEATH I'M STILL STUCK SEND HELP
- The treasure chest is, also, apparently, his true form
- Has given souls to eggplants for unclear reasons
- Gremlin hands
- Is called The Fake Scholar despite writing full on thesis and books, and being more aware on everything that's going on in the game in general
- What even is he wearing
- Giant eye/mouth under the coat
- His favorite pizza topping is canonically pineapple, as it should
Bonus doodles :]

Something I noticed in Rogue Legacy 2, is that the portraits of the estuaries reflect upon who they are.
Spoilers
Lamech's and Irad's frames are the same, firey, pointy, sharp, with an easy lead into combat and fighting.
Nammah's and tubal's are the same, artistic, flowy, intricate, leading to them being the artistans, the creators, the makers of life.
Enoch's is relatively simple, with only the corners being intricate, kind of like old fashioned fancy books, mainly bible, during the dark ages. Books, library, thinker, etc.
Super spoilers
Then there is mehujal's frame. Very plain and simple, one that the common farmer or worker could get for a important photo. On the corners is a simple design of a shell. A simple man's photo and seashells. The two things we really know about him. He was a ship captain, cares for his crew and their families, and before doing the prime version, his shattered soul is alluded to in the fact that after beating the "skeleton crew" *budum tish* of his ship, the picture is grayed out. After the prime version, he's all there, showing how all the fragments of his soul are done and gone.

Rogue Legacy 2
More Rogue
More Legacy
More... diversity. Almost.
They added different skin colours! White is still the majority, but you now have a low chance to be black! Rogue Legacy is a game where you literally play all of the descendants from a single family. Maybe if they just let you pick your skin colour at the start, and kept it consistent.
Anyway, or the actual content. More classes, and each class has it's own base weapon, making them all different from a base level, rathe than just adjusting your stats. More spells.
You have to actually unlock a character with a skill / trait to see what it does.
Most of the negative traits provide a gold bonus, giving you a reason to take them.
There are now unique weapons, heirlooms that give you persistent powers, (the only one I've gotten so far is air dash), weapons and armour to buff your physical stats, runes to buff your magical stats, fairy chests that require challenges to complete, new regions that require heirloom abilities to unlock.
Basically, everything that would cause "one more playthrough" to last for 20 playthroughs with the original.
Basically, everything the original had, but better.

Gaming Thoughts - January 2024 - Rogue Legacy
Well, technically I started playing this on Christmas Day and did a good amount at the end of December too, but oh well, I played it a lot this last month and thus it counts for the monthly doodle.
Either way, I did once try to play this game on steam a long while ago, struggle getting myself to play much in it though some of it could also just be somehow a strange disconnect with trying to play PC games as a whole even back then. Or it could just be because I still had other games on my mind as the time too.
I decided to pick it up lately because I needed something small and easy to pick up and play on the switch from time to time and just found myself back hooked into it as well. I've only gotten two of the bosses down though and still am slowly getting a little bit better from time to time. Though I find myself liking using the Paladin the most out of each of the classes likely because of how balanced it feels as well in regards to stats and also it does have quite good survivability as well in my experience compared to the other classes.
Still a fun game to mess around in if you need something that is good for bite-sized sessions like how things are for me right now with busy season.
Also, yes, Charon is just collecting those coins from me, he may as well be able to swim in them like Scrooge McDuck at the rate that I've been going. XD

August was busy and very stressful. I'm in a transition period with a lot things in my life, and even though most of those changes are positive ones (for once), change is still hard for me to process. Add in a bit of family drama, and you get, well... stress. But this month was also full of video game favorites!
Mario Kart: Two new sets of tracks were finally added. Including some old favorites, like Waluigi Pinball and Mushroom Gorge! I haven't spent a huge amount of time with these tracks yet, as I've been busy with other games. But it's always great to have more track options!
Sims 2: I've been been busy with Sims again this month. But not so much with actually playing it? 😅 I've fallen into the rabbit hole of default replacements and just making my game look better and more consistent. As it often works with me, I started with what I thought would be a small project and it turned into a much bigger one. I'm giving my downloads folder a much needed complete revamp, after many, many years.
AI: Nirvana Initiative: My friend finished Nirvana Initiative, and I'm already missing watching him play. The game was maybe not quite as strong story-wise as the first, but it was still gripping and fascinating the whole way through. And the epilogue presented a very interesting premise for a potential third game.
PS5: Best (or most exciting) thing for last? I got a PS5! I'd been looking for one for months, but could only find expensive bundles until getting an invite from Amazon. I don't have many games for it yet; it was mostly an investment in my gaming future. 😆 But to my surprise, I was able to transfer all of my games and saves from my PS4. So, I've been trying out a lot of old favorites and games I'd never gotten around to playing. Spelunky 1&2, Rogue Legacy, Loco Roco, Flower, Abzu, and the beautiful Unravel - among others. The system transitions between games very smoothly, though I'm still getting used to the new UI.
Music Favs: Yours (Now, Now), Melt (SHAED), Lovers (Late Night Alumni), Under the Sheets (Ellie Goulding).

Rogue Legacy 2's lore goes hard (warning: mild spoilers)
There's no reason Rogue Legacy 2's lore to get to GoT levels of intrigue and deep character motivation. It's got traits for giving your current heir mega-farts ffs!
But then you start getting into the lore and then you find out this Vivi-knock-off looking dude
Tumblr media
and this sad plant lady
Tumblr media
actually have a sweet backstory of love, sacrifice and ultimately tragedy.
It's all in journals and we don't actually see it in-game but still, it's so sad. I thought Enoch was the biggest asshole Estaury and it turns out he was one of the 'good' ones, along with Naamah! Tried his best, regretted his failure in evacuating Naamah or salvaging the kingdom, solidly monogamous even though Cain insists that all his children 'spread their seed' as much as possible.
Also I thought it was REALLY GoT cos I was under the impression that all the Estauries were literally brothers and sister(s), but conveniently Naamah isn't related to Enoch. Even though the game even says they're all 'Cain's flesh' but apparently that's metaphorical...except when it isn't.
I mean I'm glad Prime Naamah's memories clarify that she and Enoch aren't related at all considering they have a kid together, and even had a meet-cute moment, but I'm still so confused how she was made an Estuary if she's not related to Cain.

you ever just take a randomly-generated Rogue Legacy 2 character and make them into a Guilty Gear OC just because you can
#oops i dropped a pencil ~art~#ocs#lady kimberly iii#rogue legacy#rogue legacy 2#guilty gear#she's not really connected to the greater GG lore because that's a whole can of worms I'm not ready to open#instead she's got a mostly self-contained story about her and someone else's OC#the other guy was a highly skilled assassin trained basically from birth and raised into the ultimate killing machine#Kimberly was one of their earliest victims—number 5 if memory serves—and got completely bodied#that was like during the original crusades it was a longass time ago#anyways cut to present day Kimberly is mysteriously resurrected and decides to chase down her murderer for revenge#and also for clarity because they apologized right before she died and she wants to know what they were apologizing for#gameplay wise she's a zoner who primarily focuses on countering/reflecting her opponents' moves and punishing mishaps#of course she's also got fairly low health that can easily lead to her BEING punished for a mishap. BUT.#she has a signature move where she heals some of her HP at the cost of some tension#it has a bit of a lengthy startup so it's dangerous to just try to do your funny healing move in neutral#it has two versions (10% and 25% HP) and the one that heals more has a lengthier startup and costs more meter#that's basically her gimmick: keeping the opponent away & punishing them for making mistakes while taking any opportunity to keep yourself—#—afloat with your healing soup so you don't GET punished#her instant kill also makes her dubiously a cannibal since she cooks the opponent in her soup until it explodes into a geyser & ejects them#in short I have put way too much thought into this character lmao#I love her. Lady Kimberly III my beloved

Review: Rogue Legacy 2
Rogue Legacy 2 is an enormous beast of an adventure, packed with fast combat, great platforming and endless replayability.  It’s the kind of game that can be actively difficult to stop playing, with the spoils from one run opening up new opportunities in the next that can be difficult to resist checking out.
