Brazilian rock icon Rita Lee dies aged 75

Brazil’s president hails Lee, a singer central to the politically charged Tropicalia movement, as ‘ahead of her time’.

Renowned Brazilian rock singer and songwriter Rita Lee, an icon of the Tropicalia artistic movement, has died after a two-year battle with lung cancer, her family said on Tuesday. She was 75.

“We announce the death of Rita Lee at her home in Sao Paulo late last night, surrounded by all the love of her family, as she always wanted,” a statement posted on the singer’s Instagram account said, inviting the public to her wake on Wednesday.

Her death brought an outpouring of tributes from artists, politicians and celebrities who cheered her trailblazing role in Brazilian rock.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called her “an artist ahead of her time” and “one of the greatest and most brilliant names in Brazilian music”.

Rita Lee Jones de Carvalho was born on December 31, 1947, in Sao Paulo, to a dentist of United States descent and a Brazilian pianist with Italian ancestry.

She was central to Brazil’s politically charged Tropicalia movement, which emerged in defiance of a military dictatorship starting in 1964, and her work at the time was often censored.

With more than 20 albums recorded and 55 million records sold, her songs touched on issues related to feminism and sex in an era when such issues were taboo.

Although she regarded her voice as “weak and a little out of tune”, like a sparrow’s, she enjoyed a long run of top-selling albums, including Rita Lee and Rita Lee & Roberto de Carvalho, and dozens of her songs were featured in widely watched telenovelas in Latin America.

The behemoth television network Globo used her rendition of the song Poison Weed (Poison Ivy) in three of its programmes.

“I was not born to get married and wash underwear. I wanted the same freedom as the boys who used to play in the street with their toy cars,” she told the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone in 2008.

“When I got into music, I realised that the ‘machos’ reigned absolute, even more in rock music. ‘Wow’, I said, ‘this is where I’m going to let my fangs out and, literally, give them a hard time.’”

Lee gained fame in the 1960s with the band Os Mutantes, formed with Arnaldo Baptista and Sergio Dias, playing alongside legends of Brazilian pop music such as Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso to international acclaim.

Kicked out of Os Mutantes by Baptista, whom she had been married to, for supposed artistic differences, Lee played with the band Tutti Frutti in the 1970s.

That band broke up towards the end of the decade, leading Lee to start her solo career, and she played often with her husband Roberto de Carvalho, the father of her three children.

Eventually, her popularity extended beyond Brazil.

She performed in Portugal, England, Spain, France and Germany. In 1988, the British newspaper Daily Mirror revealed that then-Prince Charles admired her song Lanca Perfume and considered her his favourite singer.

She won a Latin Grammy in the Best Portuguese Language Album category in 2001, for her album, 3001.

Lee was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2021 and had been undergoing treatment since then.

Ontem passei o dia segurando o choro por saber da sua partida e hoje eu tive a honra de sonhar contigo pela primeira vez na vida: Eu me despedia de ti e saía do cômodo onde estávamos -- você estava muito bem como antes de adoecer, feliz e brincalhona, com seus cabelos vermelhos -- e eu te via em todos os lugares daquela casa ao mesmo tempo, não entendia o motivo e te perguntava "ué, mas você estava ali..." e você me respondia com esse sorriso maravilhoso " é que agora eu faço parte do todo" e abria abria os braços, só então minha ficha caía de que você tinha morrido e eu começava a chorar, você me abraçava, sorrindo, e a sensação era maravilhosa, de acolhimento e felicidade plena, e me dizia que estava tudo bem, que você estava bem e não havia necessidade de chorar, fazia brincadeiras e palhaçadas pra eu sorrir.

Noutro sonho, também contigo, e ainda mais louco, por algum motivo, você era a "vovó Rita Lee" e não a cantora Rita Lee.

Em mim e em todos os fãs, amigos e familiares, ficarão a saudade, o amor, a admiração, o carinho e as lindas memórias das risadas, das palavras de quem falava o que queria. Você foi, é e sempre será maravilhosa e a verdadeira rainha do rock (ainda que você não goste desse título).

Other Characters you can legally use for your Mickey Mouse project

Mickey Mouse is in the public domain, as is Minnie Mouse and Peg-leg Pete. There's some caveats to that, and I talk about that more in this other post, but for now, let's talk about other characters who you can also use to fill out the cast.

These characters should all be in the public domain, though some characters still have treademarks. I'll get into how to use them safely as we go. Anyways, let's start.

Other Disney Characters

Disney obvciously doesn't advertise this, but there's actually quite a few Disney originals who've actually been in the public domain for a while.

The Mad Doctor never had it's copyright renewed, and so it's very technically the first Mickey Mouse cartoon to enter the public domain. Keep in mind, the version of Pluto featured in the short isn't in the domain just yet, but the Doctor himself is free to use.

What's funny is that Disney would later use a version of Doctor for Epic Mickey. Obviously don't use that version of the character.

Aside from the Mad Doctor, we also have Oswald and Ortensia

Yeah, as it turns out, Oswald's been in the public domain for quite a while, but he's still trademarked by Disney. Easy recommendation... use the original "fat" design of the character and have him go by Lucky.

But before Oswald, we have the Alice Comedies

Everything about the Alice Comedies is Public Domain for a long time, and the Disney corporation very rarely acknowlege these characters existence. Which is a shame because These shorts were some of the first shorts Walt ever produced, and they have the unique gimmick of featuring a live action girl in an animated world.

Everybody already knows about Oswald, but nobody talks about Oswald and Mickey's older brother from these shorts, Julius the Cat

Like... yeah no, it didn't all start with a mouse. Or a rabbit. It started with a cat.

Foxy and Milton Mouse

Both Foxy (top) and Milton (bottom, pictured with his girlfriend Rita Mouse) were characters created by Warner Brothers and Van Beuren respectively to cash in on Mickey's success, and both characters are also in the public domain.

In fact, all Van Beuren cartoons are apparently in the public domain, and I encourage you to find their cartoons and use them as you please.

Fleischer Characters

Betty Boop is probably in the Public Domain, but there's a few caveats with this. From what I can tell, the name Betty Boop is trademarked, but the character herself isn't. Most of the old Betty Cartoons are free to use, but newer incarnations, including the versions used in 1985's The Romance of Betty Boop and 1989's The Betty Boop Movie Mystery are still very much under copyright.

To avoid any legal trouble, I have two big recommendations. Although everybody remembers Betty as having Black hair, in one of the few early instances of Betty being shown in color, she's actually depicted as Redhead.

This is Betty Boop in 1934's Poor Cinderella, and her hair color is pretty clearly red.

The other option is to just make her black.

Though there's been some debate as to whether Betty Boop was intentionally modeled after Esther Lee Jones or not, there's still no denying the influence of Jazz on the character. Betty Boop is a Jazz singer and is often depicted dancing to Cab Calloway. Hell, the Betty Boop musical features Jasmine Amy Rogers as the titular character.

Betty Boop aside, there's an entire world of defunct Betty Boop characters who are definately public domain, including Bimbo and Koko the Clown.

Next year, Popeye's also gonna enter the Domain. So keep an eye out for him too.

Anyways, these are my picks, but obviously this list isn't meant to be comprehensive. There's a ton of old cartoon characters out there who can be freely reinterpreted into newer works. Feel free to add your own favorite public domain cartoon to the list.
