Why I Love Sanctus

(This is a little creativity exercise I decided to try to keep in mind as I continue to create stories for my original world. I took it from the approach of like, ‘if I was a film critic for Goncharov’ sort of angle, lol. Don’t take it seriously. In essence, this is just a silly essay to remind myself why I’m still working on stories in Sanctus, including the Snap Dragon Club bois.)

The isekai genre is one that has existed for a long time. Beyond ‘Sword Art Online’, and even beyond ‘Wizard of Oz’, people have always played with the idea of what it’d be like to travel to a world different from your own. Some have even subverted it by letting it be demons or dragons that get isekai’d into the real world, our world. But what of the point of view of those whose world humans get isekai’d to? It’s a subtle take that Sanctus attempts to answer. In this essay, I would like to go over three reasons why I think Sanctus is a fun sandbox of a world with hidden depths that anyone can enjoy.

To begin with, Sanctus is a concept borne of having a safe haven. People from various worlds are isekai’d away from some horrendous event or a dying world, only to find themselves in Sanctus, a world that seems truly welcoming, to various degrees. In Ossen, all the inhabitants of the continent seem to welcome newbies with open arms, more than happy to help them get on their feet and start a new life. In Rioc, there is a bit more obvious tension than in Ossen, but people are still generally willing to help, provided you’re willing to do favors or quests. Traloc is currently a mystery, as neither human nor a native of Sanctus has visited this place, so one can only imagine the sort of hospitality a newbie would be given. Finally, there is Auden, a land littered with monsters, where everyone is expected to fend for themselves. Each continent seems to delve into all the possibilities of life, giving watchers/readers something to think about. What if I could live a fairy tale life in Ossen? What if I could live an RPG life in Rioc? Or what if I was in a survival/horror genre in Auden? There are so many stories to be told, and it all depends on which stories you like. Basically, there seems to be something for everyone of any age.

Furthermore, the author admits that the origins of Sanctus is ‘to be a safe haven for [their] creations’. They’ve made several OCs over the years, many for already established franchises and worlds. But why should their existence end there? Why can’t they be rescued from a dead-end story? Why can’t they live a brand new life, where their existence is safe to make new choices, face new challenges, meet new people? Is it a bit too daring to put so many characters in a world and hope for the best? Perhaps. But that’s the same for any creation. In Sanctus, these once shallow, two-dimensional characters can grow to be something more, to be protagonists in their own stories, to be cool heroes or villains in a world where the population always seems to be getting filled more with world-hopping people.

Finally, Sanctus, in general, is meant to be a wish-fulfillment in the similar way that we like to be heroes in video games. We’re given side quests and fetch quests, all in the name of helping others. Sometimes we do them because we’ll get cool stuff out of it, sometimes it’s to be a completionist and do everything possible in the game. But sometimes, it’s because we do have an inner desire to help when we can’t always. A lot of times, we want to help, but our situations make it difficult to be in a position to help without sacrificing something big ourselves. A lot of video games make sure we’re always in a position of power, always in a position to get better, and always in a position to help others who are in need, even if it’s in small ways. Sanctus is a way to give OCs happy lives and happy endings, in a way that we can’t always afford.

In conclusion, if you are a fan of happy stories, of magic, fantasy and fun, I highly suggest taking a look at the characters of Sanctus. They all have colorful backgrounds, meta and in-story. There’s always more to discover, and I hope some of you will decide that’s worth it enough to give it a look.
