This time I made a figure of the loyal dog "Rini" called "Ukrainian Hachiko" from resin clay

hobby crafts and great and everyone should get into a hobby craft, but I really really really really need people to do at least a little bit of research into what they’re interested in and learn important things such as that fact that polymer clay, air-dry clay, and resin are NOT food safe. yes that includes clay that’s been coated in a clear coat like mod podge (the dishwasher safe mod podge is not food safe)

the reason that some* ceramics are food safe is because glazes melt into essentially a thin layer of glass on the surface, and the clay is heated to a temperature that vitrifies it. and I say some because not all ceramics/glazes/firing temps are food safe, and that’s a whole other deep dive of research for people who get into ceramics. but the point is that most people can’t do that at home, so they look into non-ceramic materials and assume that’s a cheaper and easier way to make food-safe items, when really what’s going to happen is all these materials will leach into your food, especially with heat applied

also can resin creators wear proper PPE with gloves and respirator, I am begging you, that shit is toxic to touch and inhale

Ok, I watch a ton of clay creation slash diorama creators on YouTube.

And I really, really need to share three of the most mind blowing artists with you all.

Because I just saw one that completely broke me (affectionate) and realized to be honest I need to show two others before I settle on “Most insane amount of detail imaginable.”

First, the most recent vid.

TW: Zombie shark, so dni if either of those concepts are bad for you, but I cannot stress enough how much skill and talent and detail!!!!!!! (spoiler, I’ve never seen this technique with lights before and it’s amazing)

Second, for some whimsy, a Minecraft miniature diorama. That’s actually a tutorial for the free patterns they made if you have the time/energy/patience to make one yourself!!!!

(Actually go on to YouTube and use CC for subtitles so you can follow along, but the point stands)

Lastly, a 2-parter, this is just presented without comment. Largely because my jaw is still dropped and how gorgeous these four (four!!!) pieces are!!!!

Tried my hand at some more detailed clay work for a Xenosmilus, but since I don't have a kiln I had to make a silicone mold and cast it in resin to paint. Turns out I still have a lot to learn about resin because the final product didn't quite go as planned. Both look good but I'll always prefer the clay model. 😅

The girls are finally ready! Grace the Golden Sebright is completely hand made.

I cut the vague shape of a chicken out of clay with a craft knife, wait 24 hours for them to dry, then sand them down to smooth the surfaces. After that, a layer of gesso to make the paint sit nicely. Then comes the actual painting using acrylics.

Once that’s completely dry, a few layers of UV resin on each side to protect the clay. Curing the resin is pretty time consuming with no freaking SUN lmao.

Finally, I attached split rings to the hooks for extra security and put the whole thing together. 🌈
