Epona feeling good today!
Update on her....
About 1 month ago, I noticed she was parking out her right front and was slightly lame. Took her to the farrier, and he wasn't sure why, so I went ahead and got the vet called. We took X-rays, and this poor girl has ring bone disease and a couple of bone spurs. For how little she shows pain, I was very surprised the amount of arthritis.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Gone right into treatment with Previcox and injections. Was unable to find draft size shoes that helped with ring bone disease, which was very frustrating. Farrier and I devised a plan and hand welded custom shoes for both front feet. She is feeling much better, as you can see from the little video above.
I have retired her from mountain trails, heavy riding, and other more strenuous activities. Vet cleared her (for now) for kid pony rides, light/short rides. She has a forever home here, so even if she turns out to be a full-time pasture puff, that is fine by me until treatment no longer gives her pain relief. Then, I will make the tough call to make sure she isn't suffering. Sadly, this is comman for draft horses, and with her being a rescue, it is even more challenging. She is well loved, and my husband and I will do everything in our power to take care of her.

After a few months of trying different things we have decided Fly will be turned out for the foreseeable future. She is not happy with pressure or being asked to do “hard” work, it’s hard to say right now if this is pain related or just that her heart isn’t in it and she doesn’t k ow how else to communicate. The multitude of people, professional and otherwise (vets, farrier, dentist, body workers etc) so far all agree there is nothing physically wrong with her although budget restraints haven’t allowed spinal X-rays (with kissing spine in mind) or other exploratory endeavours so either there is pain somewhere or she just isn’t keen on the lifestyle we had in mind as a potential 1.30m horse. She wants so bad to be a good girl, she has so much talent but for now she is happiest as Belles paddock mate so that will be her job for the next week while. She is most definitely happy to be turned out, once I have the funds (after Belle and Maggie stop finding ways to bankrupt me) I would love to do further investigating to ensure we are doing all we can for her but she is not being sold, just having redirection. Horses don’t understand talent or their own potential, just because she can doesn’t mean she should.
We will be looking for youngster to bring on both as a show jumper and for low level dressage and showing but Fly isn’t going anywhere, she has only ever tried her absolute best, we will get to the bottom of her limitations be it physical or mental only to ensure we give her the best possible future.

TES Rescue & Rehabilitation Program
True North Equestrian
Week 1 (Pt. II) - Homecoming
Though Chava had made it through that fateful night, she wasn’t out of the woods yet. The infection raging through her body left her weak and tired, and it took time for the medications to do their job. She received what felt like a whole pharmacy’s worth of intravenous fluids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and painkillers to keep recovery from sliding backwards. Too frail to even make it to the wash bay, poor Chava remained caked in thick layers of mud and sweat and hair, though Pidge did her best to keep the gash on her knee clean and clear of debris.
Week 1 Pt. II submission for the Rescue & Rehabilitation Program event at @theequestriansims
The Doc managed to get x-rays done of her feet a couple days later. With the condition her overgrown hooves were in and the pain she exhibited when she was finally coaxed to stand, Pidge wasn’t at all surprised to learn that Chava had laminitis in all four feet as well. “She’s lucky,” The Doc said, “The coffin bone hasn’t dropped and penetrated her sole. There doesn’t seem to be bone loss, and her bloodwork showed she was clear for Equine Metabolic Disease and PPID. These feet will take a while to fix, though, given how the coffin bone has rotated.”
“Poor girl,” she sighed, looking at the radiograph of Chava’s hind left hoof structure. She traced along the ghostly white outline of the improperly angled coffin bone (angled away from the hoof wall, instead of being parallel as it should be), and wondered how anyone could let a horse’s hooves get this far out of hand. How long had Chava been like this, before TES had intercepted that truck bound for the slaughter pen?
The only reason the Doc hadn’t recommended humane euthanasia (despite the chronic laminitis, the raging infection, and the severe emaciation) was the fact that Chava was clearly recovering, however slow it was. Despite the excessive poking and prodding, Chava never shied away, either, and always seemed curious about what was going on around her despite the pain she was in. Day by day, inch by inch, she grew stronger as her condition improved, until finally, at the end of the week, Pidge was allowed to take her home.
“Stall rest!” The Doc barked as Pidge gently guided Chava into the trailer, which had been lined with a thick layer of straw padding. Meek as a lamb, Chava stepped up into the trailer with no fuss. “With deep, soft bedding, to reduce the pressure on her feet. Have you called Max yet?” Max was the local farrier: a little rough around the edges, but knew hooves like no other. There was no one else Pidge trusted with the upkeep of her horses’ hooves. “I texted her this morning. She’s coming out tomorrow.” “Good.” The Doc grunted, nodding in approval. He handed her a bag full of medication, his final parting gift.
A full week after Chava’s intended homecoming, she finally arrived at True North. As Pidge pulled in, she saw that Oskar was already there waiting for her - and, to her delight, Aisha was too.
Tumblr media
Chava was a little bit uneasy coming off the trailer, but settled right down as Pidge brought her around to the barn door. She hobbled slowly, and the strange click of her misshapen hooves on the cobblestone drive sounded completely alien and wrong.
As soon as Aisha got a good look at their newest addition, her eyes widened and her hands flew to cover her mouth. “I know I saw the pictures,” she gasped, “But- I didn’t realize how bad she actually was.”
Tumblr media
“She’s looking way better than she did the first night,” Oskar observed, looking over the skinny beast with a critical eye. Pidge had no doubt the wheels in his mind were already turning, working out the best possible ways to get weight back on her. Though the stall they’d prepared for her wasn’t far off at all (Foaling stalls happened to make excellent recovery stalls as well, what with all the space), their little procession was slow. Each step Chava took was painful even despite the painkillers the Doc had pumped her with prior to her departure from the vet, and while she was sweet and clearly eager to please, the stable flooring wasn’t exactly soft. By the time Pidge led her into the stall, it was clear the poor mare had reached her limit. With a soft groan, the skinny thing dropped down onto her front knees, and then gracelessly slumped to the ground.
The stall, like the trailer, had a thick layer of straw as padding, something Pidge knew Chava appreciated. She caressed Chava’s dirt-caked brow a final time before leaving her to rest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Inshallah her recovery is swift,” Aisha murmured as Pidge shut the stall door, her gaze fixed upon the mare. “You know, I’ve been seeing a lot of stories about the horses rescued from that truck. Many of them are skittish and reactive, and spook at the drop of a hat. And yet, Chava is so calm.” “She’s such a sweet girl,” Pidge agreed, turning to look at the mare as well. “Didn’t fuss at all at the vet. And when I sat with her? She’d put her head in my lap like a dog.”
“When Oskar came home that night without either of you, I was worried,” Aisha admitted, winding her arms around Pidge’s waist to embrace her from behind. Pidge leaned back into it with a soft smile. “He didn’t think she’d make it.” “She did, though,” Pidge leaned back into the hug with a soft sigh. After practically living at the vet this past week, it was no wonder she was eager to make up for the girlfriend cuddles she’d missed. “She’s not done here yet. That’s the only reason Doc said he’d treat her, you know. He told me that he usually recommended euthanasia for cases this bad.”
Aisha pressed a kiss to her temple. “She’s stubborn, then. A fighter. Just like someone else I know.”  Pidge blushed.

The Black Sun Job
Tumblr media
Based on this post below I found on Pinterest:
Tumblr media
Diyana and Hellboy in 1954 on Fletcher’s Ice Island T-3, although granted I used Alaska scenery for the background 😅. Diyana is still fairly new to the BPRD so she and Hellboy don’t get along too much. The fact that Diyana robbed him and lead him on a long run doesn’t help with that fact. As does neither constantly pickpocketing for amusement or her constant flirting help. Yup, a good start to a beautiful friendship later to turn awkward 😁 (Also I made this for art class in High school so I had to give Hellboy a lollipop rather than a cigarette here.)
Summary of Job:
In the events of Hellboy and the BPRD 1954: Black Sun, during February 1954, Agent Hellboy, Agent Swann, and Professor Farrier arrived on Fletcher's Ice Island T-3 in the Arctic Ocean sent by the B.P.R.D to investigate the mysterious brutal death of a man named, Frank Wielder, a seismologist from M.I.T who was part of a research team. When the said team found what remained of Wielder's torn remains they were attacked by an unseen creature they barely managed to scare away in time.
Deciding to investigate the matter of this entity, Hellboy, Swann, Farrier, and one other member of the Ice Island team, Heurlin. The latter being the only one both uninjured and convinced what attacked him and his group wasn't a polar bear. During their search, they encountered, somewhat ironically, a mutated polar bear that was far too big and rancid in odor to be a regular one. Hellboy and Diyana immediately sprang into action to defend the two researchers. Hellboy beats the mutated polar bear to a pulp with Diyana finishing the job by slicing its head off. The search party discovered, upon closer inspection of the carcass, it was covered in a shiny green mutative substance called Enkeladite. They also discovered they killed the mutated specimen in front of, what's essential, a flying saucer in the snow.
Diyana immediately went to work to gather samples of both the polar bear and the leaked fuel of the Saucer, while Hellboy and the rest of the group investigate the fresh bloody meat pile that could've been the pilot. Intrigued by a low humming sound emitting from inside the saucer, Hellboy decided to go inside the mysterious vehicle with Diyana not far behind, eager to gather more samples and research more of the Saucer. Given the tight fit of the cockpit, Diyana decided to have a small flirt with Hellboy over their close proximity, much to his exasperation. However, before they could leave the cockpit, the hatch leading to it slammed shut and alarms started to give out a deafening blaring noise. The rest of the group tried to get the two agents out of the Saucer, but were unable to before the vehicle dived through the thick ice and into the inky depths below.
Meanwhile, within the Saucer, both Diyana and Hellboy were thrown around the cockpit to the point of Hellboy becoming unconscious because Diyana unintentionally headbutted him from behind before her head slammed into his right hand. When both came to, the alarms had stopped, and both agents made their way out of the Saucer. When they did, they found themselves in a hangar filled with machines similar to the one they took an impromptu ride on. Shortly after, The Order of the Black Sun, basically Nazis, surrounded them and opened fire. While Hellboy focused on taking the Nazis that started to dogpile him, smashing them left and right; Diyana teleported around to execute each Nazi she could get her hands on with the hidden rapier in her umbrella, killing them before they hit the ground.
Seeing as regular guns won't work, the Nazi soldiers decided to switch up to ray guns they referred to as Accelerators. These proved to be as effective as they hoped, as they managed to incapacitate Hellboy on orders of their superiors and send Diyana to run and teleport away to avoid capture/death. Hellboy was heavily bounded to a volatile machine meant to extract an energy source, Shakti, from him and forced to listen to the head of the Black Sun, Eckart, a monologue about the backstory of his organization and their not-so-original plan to take over the world using a fleet of flying saucers like the one Hellboy and Diyana found. Meanwhile, the latter took the opportunity to raid the head doctor's office to snatch files of some of their research pertaining to hidden artifacts deep within the earth, from the dawn of history, lost cities, and other planes of existence. She found where Hellboy was being held just in time to watch him destroy the extractor he was attached to. Diyana grabbed him just after he smashed in the device and popped them out of the compound, but they still got caught in the edge of the blast.
In the aftermath, Diyana and Hellboy were stranded for a little over six weeks in the frozen arctic with no idea where they were. All the while, both agents did their best to stay warm and signal the BPRD to come retrieve them. Diyana tried her best to strengthen the signal, but it could only help so much, given their position in the middle of nowhere. Hellboy and her worked to keep a fire going, with the latter using some files she picked up as kindling. This wasn't a significant loss to her, given how those pertained to the Black Sun's pipe dream of world domination. When Hellboy questioned why she has those in the first place, Diyana twisted the truth to say that their job pertains to research as much as fighting occult baddies, plus it made good kindling. While not completely convinced, Hellboy decided not to question Diyana further.
While waiting for rescue, the agents started exchanging some stories from their lives, laughing and joking about keeping their spirits high and souls warm, not just tolerating the other's presence. However, the warmth situation would grow so dire for them that they would have to huddle up next to each other for warmth, more so for Diyana's sake than Hellboy's. This didn't seem enough to keep the pooka awake as the little food she had on her began to run low. Her body temperature started to lower to a startling degree, as did breathing and heart rate to the point Hellboy could've sworn Diyana stopped breathing at some point. While panicked at first, Hellboy soon realized that his fellow agent wasn't dying but instead entering a hibernating state known in the animal kingdom as "Torpor." A state that would last for days at a time for Diyana before she's back to consciousness.
When the Broom and a fellow agent named "Muraro" finally tracked down their coordinates, Hellboy was holding Diyana close as she was in this state, with himself covered in snow and ice. Soon after, Broom and Muraro built a fire to warm up both agents as well as give them hot cocoa. Professor Broom then informs them that the Saucer they found somehow ended up taking them from the arctic all the way to the Antarctic; speculating it may be because of hidden passages as theorized in the hollow earth theory. While Diyana and Broom engaged in a speculative discussion about the possibility, Hellboy gratefully sipped his beverage, satisfied to have taken down the bad guys. At the same time, both Hellboy and Diyana remained physically close to one another by the fire under the same blanket.
*I make no apologies for the long post 😁

Giving me the side eye during his appointment with the farrier yesterday.
It went fairly well, with some…news. This was the first farrier appointment I got to be present for since we moved here, because I had classes on Tuesdays when he would come out. But I’m on break now, so I got to be my nosy self while he worked on his feet. Farrier said he’s got pretty good feet, and no thrush or abscesses, his toe crack is steadily going away, etc. He got rasped and cleaned up, as he didn’t grow enough foot for any to be clipped off (again), and got his shoes reset with much less fussing than before. Then I asked how his white lines were looking, referring to the toe crack and his previous propensity for developing them, and he said, “Well, they’re still pretty separated from the laminitis, but it’s getting better.”
Wait, wait. What? Laminitis??
If y’all remember, before we moved he developed some serious issues with foot-soreness and was very uncomfortable and lame for a time, until I finally ignored my barn owner and decided to have the vet and farrier out together to evaluate him. A set of x-rays and a pair of shoes with pads later, Nav was pretty quickly on the mend, and we moved. Apparently…it was a bout of laminitis. My horse was laminitic. Which is why he seemed so “fussy” at his first few appointments that I missed, it explains all the awful bruising in his soles that trimmed out last time, it explains how he got so bad so fast back then. Thankfully, it was a very mild case, especially considering that the x-rays showed no changes or anatomical issues of any sort, and the newer growth is healthy. In fact, he’s the soundest he’s ever been. But six months ago, he was the lamest I’d seen him. And I feel guilty for not knowing better, or preventing it somehow, and for taking so long to find out that that’s what it was.
But I’m also pretty aggravated with my old BO, who told me I should keep riding him like that, or that if I rode him better he wouldn’t look lame because it would disguise it, or that he didn’t really need x-rays or shoes and I was overreacting. When in reality, her barn and shitty turnout led to him becoming laminitic. I’m glad I didn’t listen to her about those things she said. I’m glad he’s doing better now.

So, about 6ish weeks ago, we discovered that one of our mini horses, Cowboy, was lame. Lame in horse terms is that the horse has shifted in gait or has an abnormal stance in response to pain somewhere in the affected limb. It was quite significant, so we called the vet out to make sure it wasn't a substantial injury. This was the morning of the boygenius concert, actually. We had the car accident happen right outside of the practice about 20 minutes before the vet came. She confirmed what we were hoping for in that it was probably just an abscess in his hoof. So, abscesses are common and frequent issues for horses in our particular climate. There's not much you can do to prevent them because the weather really has the final word. So, what causes an abscess is the softening of hooves due to long periods of rain and then extreme heat that causes the hooves to harden before they are naturally able to work little rocks out of their hooves by walking or something like that. So, when the hoof hardens with that little rock wedged in there, that is what causes the abscess. The best form of treatment is hoof soaking and then hoof packing. This method causes the hoof to soften long enough for the abscess to burst, which is not painful to the horse and provides relief. So, you soak the hoof in a bucket of warm water and epsom salt for 20 minutes and then pack the hoof with a wet cotton poultice, wrap it in vet wrap and then with duct tape for durability, especially if it rains. You want to keep the hoof as clean as possible to prevent infection. This kind of procedure is easy to manage with a mini horse as their hoofs are cute and small.
He looked fab in hot pink 💁‍♀️
Tumblr media
It takes about 5 or so days for the hoof to become soft enough for the abcess to burst, so this is something you have to do every day until it bursts.
While helping her with cowboy, she explained that the practice has been really lucky to have not had to deal with abscesses over the last 6 years that she's been our equine specialist. We've had to hoof pack for Jake when the ground was really hard last year with the lack of rain, and it irritated his front hooves due to his navicular issues. We didn't have to, but it was the kind and ethical thing to do because he was so uncomfortable and hurting. We gave him lime green hoof packs 😎
Well, two weeks after Cowboys abscess healed, Nicole found Traveler lame so we called the vet out to make sure that was all it was, and because it presented that way, we treated it as such. Now, Traveler is a friesian, one of the biggest horse breeds. His hooves are so much heavier and harder to maintain. He also has the worst ground manners of any horse you could possibly interact with. It's just the way his owner let him be. He is very pushes with his nose when he has had enough. He will paw/stomp the ground with his front left hoof when he no longer wants to be tied or wants you to give him his food faster. He is also the sweetest horse who loves people and their company. He's just spoiled 😅 with that said, the process of soaking and hoof packing has been a nightmare. We had suspicions that he wouldn't tolerate standing in a bucket, so we got him a special waterproof hoof soaker to strap onto his hoof. It took about a week for his abscess to burst. A week of fighting a giant ass horse every morning to make sure he would recover. You have to have fun, though, so we got him different colors of duct tape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Love the pic of him with his tongue out 🤣
Well, he was doing great last Friday, and then Karen noticed that he was lame again.
So, we called the vet out on Monday, and she did some x-rays. This was when I was a vet assistant and he did not want to cooperate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We sent those to our farrier, and she noticed odd things about his x-rays. She said it seemed as though he was missing part of his coffin bone, which is pretty much a death sentence for horses because it leads to chronic laminitis. It wouldn't make sense, though, so she consulted with a podiatrist from rood and riddle in Lexington, who is supposedly one of the best in the country. He said it appeared as though Traveler has a condition called keratoma, which is a benign tumor that grows inside the hoof. It's benign, so that's great, right? Well, the issue is that if you don't do surgery to get that out, he'll keep continuously abscessing. Abscesses are just so painful for horses. Well, Traveler just turned 24. He is an old man with severe arthritis. He can't be trailered to a hospital without being sedated because he is claustrophobic. He would have to be in a stall at the hospital, but he hates stalls because he is claustrophobic, so he would have to be sedated the entire time. The surgery isn't a hard one, but recovery would be long for him, and we can't guarantee he would be fully healed before the winter, which is already a hard time for horses with arthritis. So, Linda (his owner) was pretty much waiting for the vet to confirm to know how much time we had before euthanasia. The vet called and told us not to give up (which we weren't trying to) because Dr. Lesser wanted to personally see Traveler and get more x-rays. Depending on the size of his tumor, we might be able to get it to the point in which he only abscesses once a year or so. If that's the case, euthanasia will not be on the table. So, it's a waiting game of spending all the time with him and giving him all the treats I the meantime with pain meds and an antibiotic to help him recover from this episode faster. He is more sound today than the last three, so that gives me some hope. I've known in my gut that this might be our last year with him depending on how harsh the winter is, but I didn't think the possibility of that would come this soon so that's been hard. But we're trying to stay positive and be sure he gets the best care we can offer. We are continuing through hoof pack without soaking to give him some cushion between his sole and the ground. This one is just a semi wet poultice, a diaper, and vet wrap, so it's not nearly as bad. We can do it faster so he gets less irritated by the process.
He's a sleepy boy in this pic.

Buy a Horse
Tumblr media
Introduction:-
Horses have long been admired for their grace, strength, and beauty, captivating the hearts of many.
If you're considering buying a horse, it's essential to understand the responsibilities and joys that come with horse ownership.
Factors to Consider:-
Budget:-
Determine your budget for purchasing a horse, keeping in mind additional costs such as boarding, feed, veterinary care, and equipment.
Experience and Skill Level:-
Assess your experience and skill level with horses.
Novice riders may benefit from purchasing a well-trained and gentle horse, while experienced riders might prefer a younger, more spirited equine.
Purpose and Discipline:-
Decide on the purpose and discipline you have in mind for your horse.
Whether it's trail riding, show jumping, dressage, or Western riding, certain breeds and temperaments are better suited for specific activities.
Time Commitment:-

Finding a Horse:-
Local Breeders and Trainers:
Visit local breeders, trainers, and equestrian facilities to inquire about horses for sale.
They may have suitable horses or know of individuals looking to sell their horses.
Online Classifieds and Websites:-
Utilize online classifieds and horse sales websites to browse available horses.
Exercise caution and conduct thorough research before finalizing any online transactions.
Horse Auctions and Sales:-
Attend horse auctions and sales to view a variety of horses in one location.
Auctions can be exciting but require careful evaluation of the horse's history and health.
Networking and Recommendations:-
Network with fellow equestrians, trainers, and horse owners to gain insights and recommendations on potential horses for sale.
Preparing for Purchase:-
Pre-Purchase Veterinary Examination:-
Arrange for a trusted veterinarian to conduct a pre-purchase examination.
This includes a thorough health check, evaluation of soundness, and potential X-rays or other diagnostic tests.
Trial Period:-
Whenever possible, request a trial period to spend more time with the horse before making a final decision.
During this period, assess compatibility, ride the horse in different environments, and observe its behavior.

This helps build trust and strengthens your relationship.
Establish Groundwork:-
Engage in groundwork exercises to establish respect and communication.
This includes leading, lunging, and ground training.
Patience and Consistency:-
Be patient and consistent in your interactions with your horse.
Horses respond well to clear, calm, and consistent cues.
Positive Reinforcement:-
Utilize positive reinforcement techniques, such as rewards and praise, to encourage desired behavior and build a positive association.
Mutual Enjoyment:-
Create opportunities for enjoyable experiences together, such as trail rides, playtime, or participating in horse-related events.
This strengthens the bond and makes owning a horse a fulfilling experience.
Conclusion:-
Owning a horse can be a rewarding and life-changing experience.
By considering the factors involved, choosing the right horse, and providing proper care and attention, you can embark on a remarkable journey with your equine companion.
Remember, responsible horse ownership entails ongoing commitment, but the love, trust, and connection you develop with your horse make it all worthwhile.

Ah as callous as it sounds… sometimes a not so perfect vetting can be used to negotiate the price of the horse down— every situation is different obviously. In experience with horses that aren’t show animals it’s not about going all out on the vetting (full X-rays for example… usually ridiculous school animals.. also honestly I never understood buyers who don’t pull the plug on the exam/purchase as soon as the first issue is found…) but making sure ur not walking face first into an existing (and maybe unknown or not disclosed) problem that may become very expensive very quickly. Know this woman who bought a horse w crazy feet issues bc she was like “I can fix it- it just needs a better diet farrier blah blah blah” it’s been 8 months of struggle and vet and full board and training etc and finally she came to our barn n we r like you literally can’t fix this this horse needs to be put to pasture
See, that’s the damn struggle. All I want is a really cursory check, movement, flexion tests, maybe some blood drawn, blah blah. The basics. But no one will come out there to do it, and the horse is not priced high enough to warrant being trailered out for a ppe somewhere else and a two week trial, which would be great. The owners are already a little iffy on the fact that I even wanted a ppe (the exact reaction was “why? What good would that do?” it’s pretty freaking country out there) I tried to get the mobile vet to agree to just some basic I’ll-trot-her-out-while-he-watches-her shit and he just said no way, gotta drive to his office two hours away and get X-rays and scopes, and there is no way that a 2500 dollar horse merits 1000 of formal office ppe. I love the nature in this state and the fact it can be so rural, it’s beautiful out here, but it is a major pain in the ass when it comes to shit like basic veterinary care. Hell, there is no emergency vet for small animals in my city, I have to drive 45 minutes away to the next one whenever my cat has a problem. And my city is the goddamn state capital. This… it’s a really weird state.
Your example is the only thing that really is on my radar, tbh. She’s in good shape (if a little wide, they are only feeding her alfalfa), back is not sore, she bends well, clear eyes, nice gaits (when she picks them up, she’s still learning). My main concern is her feet, she gets sensitive on gravel. she hit a rock when the owner was lunging her and it put her off in the front for a few minutes. Once the owner got on three minutes later she was sound again, and pretty seriously balanced considering the owner is probably close to 200 lbs and the horse is 13.2. She was sound under me too, and rode like an all terrain mule when I had her just out on rough ground in the trees behind her pen. No tripping, no twist in her back legs when she walks, stabs a little wife but not crow toed or camped out. Really energetic, solid little mare.
But! Obviously I’m not trying to buy a horse with lameness issues, so I’m trying to get at least one more pair of eyes to come out and look her over to confirm if I’m seeing shit correctly, because as it stands she doesn’t have underrun or contracted heels, her feet are solid and show no signs of past laminitis, I’m not getting any other obvious signs of navicular issues like tripping, choppy strides, etc. She was shod when they got her but they took the shoes off and they keep her on pretty hard ground, ride her in a slanted pen on hard/pebbly ground, keep her feet too long, etc. I see no indication that she has nothing more than basic sensitivity that would be solved by boots or shoes. It’s all just situational and I need another pair of eyes, because she stood stretched out for a minute and I was like “?? bad foot sign??” but she’s also gaited, so the stance could be natural, and she only did it once. 🤷🏻🤷🏻 I am not trying to purposefully buy a lame horse, so I’m crossing all my fingers that my trainer friend would be willing to go out there with me to check her over and take more video, especially since the weather is supposed to get worse this week, I’d like to see her when it’s cold and muddy and see if the pressure change causes joint aches, etc. also! They ride her in a Tom Thumb, so god only knows how she will behave/move if I take her home, get her feet done and leave her in a pasture for a week, and then start her going in a baucher french link or something.

Why ‘War of the Worlds’ (2005) is a underrated masterpiece.
Tumblr media
‘War of the Worlds’ was released in 2005, it is directed by the film god that is Steven Spielberg (Jaws, E.T.) and written by Josh Friedman (Terminator: Dark Fate, Avatar 2) and David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible)
Cast:  - Tom Cruise as Ray Farrier. - Justin Chatwin as Robbie Farrier. - Dakota Fanning as Rachel Farrier. - Miranda Otto as Mary Ann. -Tim Robbins as Harlan Ogilvy. - Ann Robinson as Grandmother.  - Gene Barry as Grandfather.
First lets start with some history of ‘The War of the Worlds’ - The 2005 film is based off the novel of the same name which was written by H.G. Wells between 1895 and 1897, it then was then made into a series by Pearson’s Magazine in 1897 in the UK, Cosmopolitan in the US. Then becoming a hardback novel in 1898, it is one of the earliest written pieces to tell a story of conflict between Martians and man and so its one of the most commented on pieces of science fiction.
It has been adapted and developed several times over many decades in many medias, the ones that come to mind are the famous 1938 dramatic radio reading that was directed and starred Orson Welles that actually caused public panic to those who listened in and didn’t know that the Martian invasion was fiction, its said that up to a million people ran out of their homes in terror.  (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds_(1938_radio_drama) )

The 1953 ‘The War of the Worlds’ film adaptation, which was produced by George Pal and directed by Byron Haskin. It also starred Gene Barry (who played Dr. Clayton Forrester) and Ann Robinson (who played Sylvia Van Buren) who can also been seen at the end of the 2005 film, they play the grandparents of Robbie and Rachel which I think is a sweet little cameo to see for those who loved the 1953 film.  Ann Robinson also revived her role as Sylvia Van Buren in two other films and three episodes of ‘The War of the Worlds’ tv series in 1988.

In 1978 the most well known musical album by Jeff Wayne was produced and based off the story of ‘War of the Worlds’ this album included the voices of Richard Burton and David Essex.

This was then turned into a concert musical which tours annually through out the UK and Europe, the concert includes live performers such as Carrie Hope Fletcher but also a 3D hologram of Liam Neeson. It also includes a mix of computer animation, pyrotechnics and a big mechanical tripod that comes out on stage and lights up and can fire its heat-ray.

There have also been several Tv series, the two newest being the 2019 BBC version staring Poldark’s Eleanor Tomlinson and Full Monty’s Robert Carlyle, that has a Edwardian setting and follows closely to the novel.

The other being the FOX 2019 adaptation that is set in present day Europe but I found this version didn’t really go off the novel, and was frustrated with the lack of the famous Tripods.  (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds)
As a kid I would watch the 1953 film with my mum all the time as its one of her favourites and I do really like it, but then 2005 rolled around and in comes Steven Spielberg’s version. To be fair it was probably 2006 when I finally saw it, I was nine years old at the time and I remember my dad bringing home the DVD that someone at work had lent him. I don’t remember watching it but I do remember having nightmares for a month after, only for a month though.  Many years later when I was half way through high school and getting more and more into film my dad then bought the DVD from Woolworth's before it shut down, the DVD didn’t have a case only a see through CD case so I think it only cost him something like 50p. So I re-watched and again I don’t really remember this but all of a sudden I was hooked, and it climbed to the second spot on my favourite movies list where it still sits today. Honestly if you asked anyone I was friends with at that time they will tell you just how obsessed I was with it.
I have many scenes that I love in this film the first being the rise of the first tripod, but there are two that I geek out over every time.
The first scene being the one in the basement at Robbie and Rachel’s house, the scene starts off with Ray asleep in a chair. He starts to stir when when a blue flash of light on his face, but then jolts up right at a load whooshing noise followed by closely by Robbie shooting up from just below the camera. I love the way that Robbie appears sort of fits with the sound that’s heard, also the whole mood of the scene which is pitch black with this blue flashing light every now and then. The fact that you’re just as clueless as the characters as well, you find out what’s happening when they find out.  Also the way that Rachel appears behind the basement stairs, which will appear again near the end of the movie in a much more damaged basement which shows just how much their world has changed in just a short few days.  The sound design in this movie as well is something that I love, I love when the sound in a film alone can creep you out. The tripod sound is one of my favourite sounds to exist, like if I heard that from outside I would be so creeped out and scared.  At this moment in time Robbie and Rachel have no idea what is hunting them or what Ray has seen, Imagine running from something and seeing something completely destroy the whole of your neighbourhood yet not knowing what it looks like. This is what runs through my mind when I heart Rachel cry “Is it them, Is it them?!”  Then the next morning when Ray goes upstairs and see’s that the house is just completely destroyed by an aeroplane that has crashed down in the middle of the the housing estate. This Boeing 747 was a out of use plane and the production crew bought it for $60,000 which then cost them $200,000 to transport, it was then broken into pieces and houses were built around it. Which just shows how far some movie productions will go to make a film look more legit. (We love practical effects in this house.) This scene is still set up at Universal Studios Hollywood and can be seen on the Studio tour.

(Basement and Plane crash scene.)
My second favourite scene, which is one of my all time top favourite scene ever with no surprise is the dock scene.  The speeding train that’s on fire is absolute stunning in every sense but for me the scene starts when the music starts.  ‘If I ruled the world, everyday would be the first day of spring.’ But i’m really glued to the screen when Rachel starts to follow the birds coming in from the river to in land, she follows them up to the hill where she notices the tree’s on the top are moving weirdly. “The tree’s are funny.” She then reaches out and grabs onto Rays hand who was talking to a friend.  Robbie turns to the hill as the camera slowly comes back and shows Robbie also turning to look at where Ray is looking. (Just remembering that this is the first time Robbie and Rachel ever see the tripods.)
Tumblr media
The camera then shows us what the family is looking at to reveal a tripod stood on the top of the hill, it then moves one of its legs which crushes a tree and makes everyone else look back. Obviously chaos ensues from this point on, everyone running trying to get onto the ferry to get away from the impending doom, unfortunately we learn that no where, not even on the water is safe. As a tripod comes up from out of the water and attacks the ferry, the family manage to escape and get to land on the other side of the ferry. They stop for a moment to catch their breath as people are being picked out of the water below them, they turn as a old air raid alarm is heard on the other side of the hill and we see tripods coming over another hill that was filled with people and using their head rays to wipe them all out, we also see in the distance a lighting storm indicating more Martions are still coming to earth. The scene is like a depiction of all the stages of the attack.  (Dock attack scene.)
Tumblr media
I mean all the action scenes in this movie are just so beautiful and amazing, but did we expect any less from Spielberg? And the CGI and practical are all done extremely well and fitted together to make a scene look as real as possible. One of the art directors that worked on this film, Doug J. Meerdink who has also worked on Jurassic Park: III, Cloverfield and Jurassic World.
I was looking up some trivia on IMDB for this movie and found that there was a deleted scene that is called the ‘Camelot’ scene. This scene is supposed to take place between the attack on the ferry and the battle on the hill, it involves Ray, Rachel and Robbie walking through an abandoned housing estate that’s named Camelot, when a pack of tripods start walking near by.  One of the tripods breaks off and the family has to take cover behind a SUV, they watch helplessly from behind as the tripod reaches into the house and grabs people from the houses. This scene has never been released but apparently it was fully finished, VFX and all but then taken out a few weeks before post production was wrapped up.  There is only one official video from this scene that was in the actual trailer for the film, and it’s only a shot of the family hiding behind the SUV.
Tumblr media
The only other shot from the scene is this landscape shot of a CGI tripod.
Tumblr media
There are also photos of the set designers setting up the miniature of the housing estate to shoot this scene, the rest are fan arts of how the scene maybe looked/ played out.  (Source)
I really hope that one day Steven releases this scene, or for some anniversary adds it into an extended version of the film like we’ve seen for other films. Because I would love that so much! It seems like such an incredible scene, and to see the tripods up this close again would be so cool!
One of the trailers that was released for this film doesn’t have any of the film shots it in, It takes place in a normal neighbourhood where people are just going about their normal nightly routine when suddenly over the hill there are all these brilliant flashing lights, everyone's just coming out of their houses in their pj’s and standing in the street marvelling at this sight in front of them. Then we see explosions and suddenly heat rays are blowing up the tress on the street which then goes into the title.  I just love this, a trailer that doesn’t give anything away from the movie but creeps you out enough to be invested.  (Trailer.)
Tumblr media
All in all it’s just an very visually pleasing film, it feels real enough to give you a sense of fear for the characters and for yourself. I also love that Steven stayed true to the source material, more truer than some of the other adaptations and also added in his own little Easter eggs.  The sounds, the aesthetic, the colours just everything comes together so beautifully. I think its a very underrated movie that deserves so much more love.

Ray’s fate
Tumblr media
Galen Stagg belongs to @cursebreakerfarrier and of course if we’re talking about the future, I have to mention Galen’s other half, Siobhan who belongs to @kc-needs-coffee
Guardians were known for being the protectos or childeren. Their hopes, dreams, memories, fun and wonder. However those are just a few of the things the guardians protect. There was also mischieviousness, ambition, curiousity and that's just to name a few.
I'm sure you know of the most famous ones, Jack frost, the Tooth fairy, the Easter bunny, Sand man, Santa Claus. But they're not all.
She was there when Siobhan and Galen finally got married, and made sure to look over the letters the lovers send back and forth, doing whatever she could to help the wind go faster so they could talk just a bit more often.
Allow me to introduce you to a new guardian, a young witch who had died at the tender age of seventeen. Her name when she was alive, was Rachel Willow. Now, in her sort-of death, she was known more commonly as the lady of Autumn. But the other guardians and the childeren who got to see her, knew her as Ray.
It took a while for the young spirit to realise what was going on or why certain people made her heart swell with emotions, when she had just awoken.
It took what felt like ages before she recognized her good friend, Galen Stagg, when she visited him at his work. Unknown to him and many other of her loved ones, she tried her best to attend important milestones in their lives.
She was there when her old lover, Ceilo, got married and used his magic to build a name for himself, seperate from the Malfoy Family he had longed for.
To say she was happy her best friend found someone as equally amazing as him, was an understatement.
It were the little things like that that made her heart swell. She knew very well that she was not the same witch who got sorted into Hufflepuff many years ago. It broke her heart having to watch her friends age, without being able to see her, like they can see all the other ghosts in the castle where they spent so many years.
But some good things did come with all the changes, she thought to herself as she admired the leaves in the forest. Changing colors and bathing everything in a warm color pallete. The wind shook gently, picking up leaves from the ground as it circled around her, slightly lifting her dress off the ground.
She chuckled softly as she saw a few snowflakes fall before her. She sighed playfully as she picked up her pace, to keep up with the winter spirit and a new friend of hers.
After all, winter and fall got along just fine, atleast most of the time.
"Jack! It's not time for snow yet, not all leaves have fallen!" Ray shouted at the white haired boy, who was grinning at her from his spot on a large three branch.
"Then you should hurry up, don't you think?" He retorted, making the red haired spirit roll her eyes. "Jack, you're like a 100 years older than me. Just for once, act like it, would you?" She asked, smiling.
