Have you ever gone for a walk in the rain at night and been moved nearly to tears by the beauty of water flowing downhill over black asphalt? Or by the tiny waterfall pouring from a drainage pipe? Or by the way light from a streetlamp makes a glowing ring out of the water droplets clinging to a leafless tree's branches?

Have you ever gone out into the edge of a storm at night and sung along off-key with the music in your headphones? Have you ever turned your umbrella into a prop to clumsily dance with, knowing full well that it will do a poor job of keeping you dry when swung around like that but not caring? Have you ever paused your walk and your dance to stand beneath a gutter torrent so that you could feel the concentrated raindrops through your umbrella and started singing louder so that you can hear yourself over the noise?

Have you ever paused midstep, mesmerized by the streaks of rain crossing in front of a streetlamp like a swarm living moonlight? Have you ever been so overcome with joy at the sight of lightning that you can't help but laugh along with the thunder? Have you ever stood and stared in awe at the sight of a staircase you climb every day and thought about somewhere, somewhen, another human being, probably several designed it, calculated the appropriate width-to-height ratio of the steps and how many there would need to be, figured out the radius of the hand rails, made a decision on whether the fencing of the guard railing should be round or square, passed all of this and more of to other human beings who procured materials for other human beings to build it while leaving large gaps in the wall so that you, another human being (or something close enough), can still feel the lightest brush of the wonderful wind and rain as you ascend?

Or perhaps I just find myself stormy eyed this night.

Precipitation

Oy. December temps have always been variable here, but we're normally closer to freezing than this. Today is supposed to be a 24-hour downpour of rain and I, for one, object. This could all be snow! We could be having a memorable blizzard!

Hero and Nutmeg are standing glumly under their barn overhang, and I'll probably hand out some extra treats today because they won't be able to graze at all. The chickens are miserable. I have plenty of work to do inside, but I'm still gazing out the window a little mournfully.
