Toga’s Love/Quirk Theory;
Tumblr media
‘I love Tomura-kun and Touya-kun too, but their quirks won’t come out like Jin-kun’s or Ochako-chan’s. I also tried it before this battle...and they wouldn’t come out! Even though I love him... Even though I can become someone I ‘love’... Even though Jin-kun could make them come out... ‘
Translations made in here by @pikahlua.
Tumblr media
Recently in chapter 382, we see Toga’s unable to become people she loves (Tomura and Dabi), despite the fact that she became Ochaco and Jin and used their quirks and i would argue that problem is not that she didnt love them enough. (This scene also remind me of the time La Brava gets depressed when her love quirk isnt powerfull enough and she questions her love, kinda parallels.)
But i dont think thats the case. Not after Shigaraki became the first person who believed in her, gave a place she belong to her and everything he did for her and not after Dabi and Toga recently connected through Jin’s death and we even get a official art of him imitating Dabi, more details in here.
I believe in you, Toga, that your love for them is geniue too.
So what’s the problem?
Tumblr media
I think its no coincidence that the people whom she couldnt use their quirks happenned to be Shigaraki and Dabi. Suicidal brats who is full of hatred and have personal agenda in league the most, unlike Toga who wants to live, even if its her own way and she is living for love.
Toga cant fully become them because she cant understand them. She doesnt understand whats going on their head. She cant relate to their hatred and she doesnt understand their thoughts.
Compared to this;
Tumblr media
Uraraka is Toga’s foil. She is someone who is just like Toga. This is exactly why Toga ran away to talk with her. Because they are similar. Their feelings, the way they tried to shut their feelings down because Toga did the same in the past, the good girls who repress their needs and they both want to become their crushes. This is why Toga thought if its Ochaco, then she can understand her and they could talk about love.
Tumblr media
In Jin’s case, he is Toga’s bestie and someone she cares as big brother. They have many similarities, they both live for the connections. They both felt lonely. They both were abandonded by society and they wanted to live easier life. They saw league as home and they wanted to do their best to help people they care about.
Basically, Toga can understand their inner thoughts and relate to their inner feelings. I dont blame Toga for this really. Shigaraki and Dabi are too complicated to understand, especially if you dont know their story and inner thoughts. And they dont even talk about their past to connect with league so it makes sense why Toga cant use their quirks.
Well, you could say Toga cant become them because she doesnt want to become them? But i kinda disagree with that. There is a theory made in here by me and several people already mentioned that Toga is imitating Shigaraki and she seems to wanting to be more like him. I would even argue that when she says ‘Even though I love him... Even though I can become someone I ‘love’’, she is talking about Shigaraki.
Tumblr media
‘I loved people’s happy faces. That’s why, for that girl, I won’t turn a blind eye to her tears.‘
Toga is a character who geniuely want to connect with people she care about but key point of love is understanding the person you love. I guess it happens to be good time to talk about love. And last panel with Uraraka and Toga is parallel with Deku’s last panel with Shigaraki, that they wont turn a blind eye to crying face, even though they are villains, they want to save them. So good luck, Toga and Ochaco.

Okay so we have a quirk that can steal any other quirk and leave the person quirkless, it can also give those quirks to others no matter if they have a quirk already. We have a quirk that can copy other quirks and another quirk that can give a quirkless person a new quirk, or the quirks of all the previous users, right? We have that one quirk that sets rules to reality and one that leaves other people quirkless for an amount of time.
I just need more quirks that play into that rule.
Like— swap quirks quirk. You touch two people and for the next ??? minutes their quirks are now swapped. They can accidentally hurt others or themselves because they're basically relearning how to manage their quirk. They don't even know what happened or when would it end or if the effect will pass.
Or reversing quirks. You had ice? Nah, you have fire now. It sounds logical until you remember that most things don't have an exact opposite, so the user can't know what would happen. What if the electric quirk turns into a rubber body quirk? You can create anything using body fat? Now you can erase anything but you gain weight doing so.
Quirks that transfer immunity: you touch first A aka person with the "attacking" quirk and then B aka person that you want to make immune to A's quirk. You can give that immunity to multiple people, but it's less effective and lasts less than if you did with one person.
Those are the types of quirks I'm talking about.

What if Kai actually is germaphobic because of his quirk? He senses what things are made of when he touches things right? So he wears the gloves to protect himself from being able to use his quirk, but also because if he doesn’t he feels all the germs on whatever surfaces he touches?

I'm curious, did Kai prove that quirks are a generational disease?
Eri has the ability to turn back time on a piece of physical matter, she could take the scratch on someone's knee and rewind it to a time before it happend. But didn't Kai say somewhere that she could even turn back evolution, that she could turn a human back into a monkey?
Then I was sitting here thinking, if Kai used Eri's quirk to rewind the evolution of quirk DNA, then how come his first batch was only temporary? Then I came to the conclusion that perhaps he simply rewinded the quirk activation part of the brain to before it knew how to activate a quirk. Which would prove the theory that as people grow inside the womb, the quirk factor also develops, so when your born, you're born with the quirk you have. For example, Bakugou didn't "develop" his bomb quirk during kindergarten, his brain simply didn't know how to activate it until around the age of five, he always had the quirk, his brain simply wouldn't allow him to use it.
(Extra thoughts // The first known quirk was a glowing baby. That baby's quirk activation was working as a newborn. Maybe that happened to all newborns with quirks in the beginning, maybe those with more dangerous quirks died as soon as they were born because of it. That would be enough to spark an evolutionary change in DNA.)
That explains the temporary serum. Now for that permanent one, that would have to be the rewind of quirk evolution if it's true that you are born with quirks DNA. But how would that prove that quirks are a generational disease? Given that Kai was still believing in the quirk disease theory after he produced the permanent serum is one clue. Surely he would've found out whether or not quirks are a disease after working with the evolution of quirks, seeing for himself the steps quirk DNA took before it became what it is now.
Maybe that's why Afo seems so cautious around him. Afo knows that Kai knows what quirks really are and how to destroy them... it is way too late for these type of thoughts...

(I just want to infodump. If you aren’t interested, feel free to scroll. This might turn into more of a guide or overview of what I know in the fandom so far; discussion is welcome and appreciated!!!)
So. BNHA fan-devised quirk theory!!! Because the fandom is better at clarifying worldbuilding in BNHA than Horikoshi himself.
The term ‘secondary mutation’ pops up a lot, and it’s probably one of the more important ones to understand. The idea is that, there are quirks, which are the actual power, and the secondary mutations, which are evolutionary characteristics developed to support that power. For example, Toga likely has an immune system specifically designed to fight the diseases she’s get from drinking random strangers’ blood, and Uraraka is probably actually more resistant to nausea and G-force to handle her quirk’s drawbacks.
Sometimes, a character has a secondary mutation without the quirk, or (in extremely rare circumstances usually related to a quirk being given/stolen) a quirk without the mutation. For example, Midoriya’s green hair - he doesn’t use it for anything because he was born quirkless, but presumably someone in his ancestry had a quirk that was supported by having green hair, so it became an evolutionary trait.
When you have a character with a quirk and no secondary mutation, however, things get interesting (spoiler alert for UA Traitor). Aoyama, being originally quirkless before recieving a quirk from AFO, has no secondary mutation to deal with his quirk; hence, the “drawback” of the stomach aches hurting him. This can also be seen in Izuku’s chronic bone-breaking tendencies, although not to the extent that it should, which is where a lot of Dad for One theories come in. And, weirdly enough (although I haven’t seen many people talk about this out of the context of Dad for One yet), a lack of secondary mutations in the brain may be the reason for the Nomus’ lack of sentience - there has to be SOME part of the brain that processes how/when/if you’re going to use your quirk, and it stands to reason that if you have too many quirks, your brain can’t do that.
That’s also why a lot of people believe in Dad for One; from a worldbuilding perspective, it’s the best explanation for why Midoriya of all people unlocked OFA’s potential through Quirk Singularity. Midoriya having a secondary mutation, passed down from his father, that allows him to hold multiple quirks would theoretically explain why it is that Midoriya can hold all the past users’ quirks without becoming a nomu.
(Technically, you can argue that OFA changes the user’s DNA to make them compatible, but that obviously has limits, as seen in Midoriya’s chronic bone breaking. If that limit is hit before the quirk even reaches singularity, then how would he stay sentient with nine quirks in his brain??? Also, why would OFA reach singularity when Izuku is quirkless and has nothing (quirk-wise) to combine the quirk with, if not for a wierdly specific secondary mutation that comes from the same family line as the first holder?)
If you read on ao3 among the ‘Dad for One’ or ‘Quirk Theory’ tags, or longer fics that mainly centre around that area, you probably know most of this already. If you’re interested in quirk theory, I would definitely recommend checking that area of fanfics out. Even if you aren’t; a lot of these fics are really good!

Theories about Quirks:
Like most physical traits, Quirks are highly genetic, and in 90% of cases, children will either inherit one Quirk from one parent or a Quirk that is a combination of both parents' power sets. Inheriting a combination-style Quirk is not as common as inheriting a single-style Quirk, but it is not impossible or even unlikely.
For examples of combination-style Quirks that we know of, think of Todoroki, but Bakugou is also another character whose Quirk is a combination of his parents; it's just a bit more subtle than someone like Todoroki who is quite literally a perfect genetic combination of his parents.
(Side note: I've seen a couple people debate about whether or not Todoroki technically has two quirks instead of just one, but no. Yes, Todoroki can control both ice and fire, but that doesn't mean they are two completely separate quirks. Endeavor and Rei's quirks are on a sliding scale of temperature control/manipulation. If Endeavor's fire quirk is on one end of the scale, then Rei's ice quirk is on the opposite end. Shouto's quirk is the middle ground between the two extremes. Shouto's quirk is just temperature control/manipulation but on a larger scale than just heating up or cooling down objects.
This type of combination-style of quirk inheritance actually reminds me a lot of the genetic inheritance of hair texture. If one parent has curly hair and the other has straight hair, it's possible for the kid to develop a combination of both textures, and instead of getting either curly hair or straight hair, they get wavy hair, which is a combination of curly and straight. This is also similar to how skin tone works. If one parent has dark skin and the other has light skin, then it's possible for their kid to be born with a skin tone that falls in between the two different colors.)
In extremely rare cases, it is possible for Quirks to develop spontaneously that has nothing to do with either of their parents' Quirks. These types of Quirks are the result of a genetic mutation that causes the Quirk to be way more powerful than is typical for a child with a recently developed Quirk. These types of Quirks are often volatile and difficult to control, and have the potential to be very dangerous if not properly handled or addressed. These types of Quirks can be very dangerous because of their power level. Most children are born with low-level Quirks that grow in power naturally as they age. Think of them kind of like stat levels that start out at 1 and then gradually increase as the wielder gets older. But these types of spontaneous Quirks start out with an already maxed out stat that either stays at the same level or keeps getting stronger as the wielder grows. And if not handled properly, they can be extremely dangerous and volatile, especially if the wielder's emotional state is unstable or in a state of immense emotional distress. (Think of Eri and Shigaraki).
Children are most likely to inherit the Quirk of the parent that they inherit the most amount of genetic traits from. For example, if a kid looks more like their mother, they are more likely to inherit their Quirk from their mother rather than their father.
There are different categories that Quirks are classified under: mutation, transformation and emitters. I imagine that certain Quirk classifications would be more dominant over others. Like, if two parents had a kid and one parent had a mutant Quirk, then the kid would most likely develop that parent's mutant Quirk.

Dabi Is A Hot Pocket
This is 100% spoilers.
I've thought for a long time that there was more to Dabi's quirk than simple fire, because so much of his damage to himself is on the surface. Something about his quirk has had to keep his body functional, even while it's roasting.
We've seen, now, that even while Dabi is burning his extremities to ash, he's somehow still protected his innards with ice, a trait that he either awakened or became aware of when he got hit with Phosphor. While Shoto's quirk is Hot and Cold, split between Left and Right, Dabi's is Hot and Cold, split between Inside and Out. Dabi's Fire side has settled in the skin and muscles of his body... while his Ice side appears to have settled in his BONES.
Tumblr media
That's right. Scorching on the outside, with an Icy Core:
Dabi is a Hot Pocket.
You're Welcome.

WARNING: MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD FOR CHAPTER 388
It’s time for another episode of Quirk Musings with Allie! Today we will be going over:
Todoroki Toyua aka Dabi!!
Now, I was just reading a mha/bnha fic, as I do, when i was reminded of the recently-ish release of BNHA388 where it revealed that Touya has had an ice quirk the entire time apparently, I don’t really know much more than that, and my mind, as it does, was on a very fast spiral of connecting the adhd dots and coming up with theories. SO!
It is confirmed that Dabi had hotter flames/fire than Endeavor, but with him actually having an ice quirk along with his fire, I’m betting that his fire wasn’t/isn’t hotter… But that it’s colder.
I think Dabi’s fire was so cold that it burned hotter than his fathers ever would. And I believe that his rotted/rotting skin grafts weren’t because he couldn’t handle the heat but because they couldn’t handle the freezing cold temperatures his fire gave off. It even looks like frost burn/ice burn

People really want to give Deku AFO in aus. I get this, role reversal and all. What im surprised I never see tho is Deku awakening AFO through OFA.
See All For One WAS the second holder, so his vestige and quirk should be stockpiled.
After all AFO seems to be built upon two main quirks. stockpiling, the quirk afo stoll and gave to his brother, and his brothers ability to give his quirk.
But what if his brother WAS quirkless, and it was just half of afo this whole time. Or that he did have a quirk and it was "my quirk can't be taken" instead of my quirk can be given but not taken. Has any ofa holder even tried to take a quirk? I mean Deku has been the only holder to use more than the stockpiling and gifting aspect, who's to say the others couldnt use the previous quirks the whole time and just didn't. Whose to say they couldnt steal quirks this whole and just didn't.

So I had a thought, Ik Ik, that’s usually not a good thing, this time I think it is though
I think I had an idea for what fuyumis quirk could be
Fuyumi is obviously one of my favourites, and I think she can draw heat of our things, she can’t make ice or fire, but she can pull heat out of other things and into herself, and she’s heat resistant, maybe even fully fire resistant, and the things around her that she pulls heat from are made colder
If she was never taught to control it, maybe she pulls heat out of things on accident, like if she touches someone they come away feeling cold, or maybe the air around her is always freezing
Also adds a cool second dimension, if she can’t produce her own heat, so she had to take it from other sources, not literally she produces no heat, her body temp is just really low and she can’t regulate it

If you recall, the quirk singularity theory established that quirks will become uncontrollable one day, following the rate at how they were increasing in power and the inability of the body to keep up with such growth. The best example of the veracity of such theory is Tomura Shigaraki and the way his body has morphed in order to accommodate the strength of his quirk, right?
My question is: Have Toga and Dabi breached the quirk singularity point? Could that be the reason why Toga became able to use the quirk of the people she shape-shifts into, the reason why Dabi's alive and his body seems to regenerate a little or at least withstand the rate of destruction he inflicts on himself?

dumb quirk thoughts pt 2 (shigaraki.1)
is his quirk based off of the actual five points of touch or mentally recognizing those five points of touch?
cause like in canon when he gets his quirk awakening, part if it is him being able to control what decays even if he's touching it with all five fingers and he can decay with just touch now
but like i wonder; was it the actual contact of all five fingers that activated his quirk before or could it be something like acknowledging his quirk activates its, even accidentally???
idk if this makes any sense but like lets say shigaraki grabs something with all five fingers, he doesn't notice and then he does and the things already crumbling away before he can let go, because there was that moment of oh shit my quirk it's going to decay this, that activates the decay, because he thinks that the five point contact automatically activates it
what if its not the actual contact, but that slight almost-like intention to use his quirk is what activates it, so even that brief moment of thinking oh shit my quirk is enough to activate it?
so if he grabbed something with all five fingers but didn't notice and lets the item go without noticing it then it wouldn't decay, because there was no acknowledgement/intention to use his quirk
if that makes sense
and his quirk awakening was less 'something physically changed with his quirk so he can control it at will' and more him realizing that specific aspect to his quirk and getting control over it?
and if so, then are quirk awakenings the result of something actually physically changing the quirk or does it have more to do with like a person's perception of their own quirk or a person gaining a new/better understand of what their quirk actually is and being able to use it in a new way?

All Might has all the past users quirks.
Hear me out.
MAJOR MANGA SPOILERS
.
.
.
.
I don't think even All Might knows that he's been using the past user's quirks because they didn't manifest in the same way as they did with Izuku.
Going backwards, Nana had Float. One of the first things we see All Might do is leap into the air. It's played off like part of his strength quirk (all of them are played off as just his strength) but we see him scouting for a building to land on with Midoriya. That suggests he has some form of control, maybe even unconsciously, of where he lands.
We see his control over this "leap" in Kamino when he lands EXACTLY where he needs to to face AFO.
With the 6th user, En, it's pretty apparent how All Might uses his quirk. All Might physically SMOKES/STEAMS when he transforms. The manga points out that it's not just dust, in the USJ arc, Izuku sees it mixing with the dust. And All Might lets off a tell-tail steam when his time is running low.
I think this quirk manifested when All Might felt most compelled to /hide/. I haven't read Vigilantes so i don't know if he steams in that prior to his injury but it would make sense that, as All Might lost muscle mass and began looking significantly different than this personal identity, smokescreen developed to hide the transformation.
Now, Banjo is the first one I'm stumped on bc I can't figure out how it translates to All Might's power. Best I can think of is sense it's the most outwardly different quirk than the others, not something we can casually think is part of All Might's all-might-ness, i wonder if this is the only one he DIDNT develop. He had long-range attacks using a form of airforce so he may never have felt the pressure it took to develop it. I'm not sure, what do you think?
Hikage, though, is also fairly obvious. Danger sense is all but confirmed in vigilantes (I saw a scan or two) but also as the TOP PRO, we've seen All Might elude to feeling uneasy and can easily find crime/danger.
The third user's quirk, Fa Jin, is basically an all Might smash. During the USJ, we see All Might punch the noumu 300 times before delivering a huge smash after building up the power. TBH, I'm still a little unclear of how Fa Jin works but from what I've read, it's basically that.
Now, here comes the speculations.
What is the 2nd user's quirk.
I think it has to be a form of body manipulation. Based on how much All Might uses the other quirks passively, the only "that's just all might" thing we haven't explained is All Might's transformation. I think the second user has the ability to change his limbs. Hear me out. When we see 2 and 3 burst into to save First, 2 is pointing some kind of gun at First. We only see ONE hand. I thought it was just part of the gauntlets we see in the spirit form but now I think that gun IS his hand.
This is, tbf, my least convincing argument, at least in terms of the "all Might has all of the users quirks" theory. Bc yeah, that very well could be his arm but how does that translate to All Might's transformation?
Best I can theorize is that the quirk is a low level mutation quirk, sorta like a shape-shifting quirk? If we believe OFA grows in power than maybe it has limits and over time turns into the ability to completely reshape your body.
(If that's true, it's going to be kinda hilarious to see Izuku go full buff, lmao. Like can you imagine? Yikes. Though, he DID "arrange" his face to look like All Might but that's most likely a manga gag.)
Something else I've toyed with is the idea that it's a MENTAL quirk but now I think that's actually First's.
Think about it. How did ANYONE, even him, know he had the ability to pass on a quirk if everyone thought he was quirkless? I think First's quirk isn't "can pass on quirks" but rather, the ability to pass on quirks is part of a larger, connection quirk.
Maybe AFO is SO attached to his brother because they literally had a mental attachment/connection that First ends up severing when he's taken by 2 and 3. Then, he makes a connection to 2 and through their bond, First passes on the stockpiling. 2 is suddenly able to connect to 3 and that's enough for them to figure out what's going on.
Eventually, this connection of minds builds the void inside OFA where all the past users "live". Sometimes AFO can access it, forcing a connection or reopening the door that First shut on him.
I'm thinking this bc Bakugou sees Toshinori in the vestiges world. I think izuku and Bakugou have formed a connection, one Izuku could pass OFA onto him (but won't bc it's too powerful for anyone else now) and they are now able to share that subtle connection like First and 2.
(Maybe Izuku has made that connection with EVERYONE. Maybe the entire class gets brought in on it and is boosted by OFA's shared power. Or maybe Izuku extends that connection to Shigaraki and that's how he's saved)
Anyway, what do you think?

All Quirks are Mutation Type
Here's my theory on why Eraserhead's quirk doesn't work on mutant types. The answer? His quirk does work on mutant types.
I'm sure you're thinking "What's that supposed to mean?" To put it simply all quirks are a mutation of the base human genome.
What Erasure does is it stops the active force of a person activating their mutant genes to do something like shoot fire or make yourself stronger.
But mutant quirks are always active, altering your body to suit the quirks needs. So when Eraserhead uses his quirk on a mutant he turns off the quirks active factor, but of course since the body has already been molded into another shape that it deems natural it is impossible for them to just revert back to what would be considered a 'normal' human shape.
Eraserhead just makes it so that the quirk doesn't alter the person's body anymore for as long as he keeps his quirk active. If you were able to have Erasure used on a child that would have developed a mutant quirk for their entire childhood they probably wouldn't start to develop any mutations until Erasure was deactivated forcing the person's body to to go through a pseudo-puberty for their mutations rather than just growing up with them.
So, to conclude Eraser's quirk does work on 'mutant' type it's just unnoticeable.

Izuku was intended to be a quirk marriage baby, alongside being AfOs son.
Hear me out
Merging All for One and Attraction would create a way for Quirks to be stolen without the need for physical contact, since Attraction from Inko could just actively pull the quirk from someone and not necessarily require the user to be close by.
And that simply Izuku was born with the wrong Quirk combo (and had it taken from him), or no Quirk at all (I do think Izuku was born with Decay but that's a whole other convo)
DfO Quirk Marriage
And imagine if Izuku had been born with the correct Quirk! All for One probably would have yoinked it immediately and then proceeded to take many many quirks with ease
Or AfO would have stayed (or taken Izuku from Inko) and raised Izuku as his successor from birth without the need for Tomura
I have a lot of thoughts about this
