Writing disabled characters as a disabled person is both liberating and painful. Having those experiences of chronic pain makes it easier for me to describe how my MC feels about his pain. For example, how it feels like burning knives are stabbed into his leg over and over. Or how you’ll push yourself to do something, you know very well you don’t have the energy to do. Pulling from these experiences has been more liberating than I thought. It has helped me deal with some of the trauma, and also come into this acceptance that I’m still as badass as anyone else. Which is why I think writing disabled characters is just as important as writing queer characters. Everyone deserves to feel themselves connected with a character, and to live vicariously through them. This it what fiction is made for, to have these stories where our minds can run free.
I’ve read both books with queer characters where their feelings of their sexuality have resonated with me, and make me cry over the feeling of being seen. And I’ve read books with disabled characters and had the same feeling. This is why it’s so important to have representation. To have queer, disabled and/or POC in rom-coms, fantasy, sci-fi and thrillers. To show that a character that looks like you, has the same feeling as you can be a badass hero. Which is what I want to do with “Ruins of Dawn”, yes I just name dropped the new and improved title for my WIP. I want to show that a morally gray character, who has nerve pain and limps, still can kick ass. That neither his disability nor sexuality defines who he is as a person, or if he can save the world. He’s Ed Johnston, the world’s most powerful super.

The last workshop of the winter season for @flux_twc the theme today was “femme”, probably the one I was most looking forward to! As a trans masc person, who does have fluidity in gender expression, but feels like they need to go towards masc to be “seen” by others as masc… I appreciate the expiration of femininity. I don’t want to push it away or dismiss it, because I still enjoy it for myself. And I love the heck out of femmes 💚💗. It was great to explore this theme, to get some words written, and to hear what others had to say and express. 👏👏👏👏👏🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈📝📝📝📝📝📝 #writingworkshop #queerauthor #queerwriter #transauthor #transwriter #creativewriting #authorsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #writergram✒️ #catsofinstagram #transmasc #femme https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpsb_gXrLVE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Portrait of author and photographer Hervé Guibert (1955-1991). I first got to know Guibert thanks to a remarkable documentary on his life and work that was aired on TV on World AIDS Day - and I was electrified. Guibert's ruthless honesty about his life as a HIV-positive man, about his friendships (most notably with philosopher Michel Foucault), and about his complex relationships is obvious in both his photographs and books. #herveguibert #hervéguibert #herveguibertphotographe #michelfoucault #alamiquinemapassauvelavie #hiv #aidsliterature #literature #queerauthor #author #portrait #frenchliterature #photographer https://www.instagram.com/p/Cizckw4N0Ux/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Coming out July 23rd: Let Me Count the Flowers A story about office crushes, work buddies, and how flowers can do a lot more than sit there looking pretty. 🌸🌺🌻🌼🌷⚘️ Ever since earning his accounting degree, Cody McIntyre has bounced from temp job to temp job. For almost a year now, he's been the receptionist at Coffee Brews Distribution, and his contract with them expires in exactly twelve days. Hoping to stay with the company, Cody's interviewed for a permanent position that's recently became available. If he gets it, not only will it save him the aggravation of having to find a new job, he'll get to keep working with his awesome coworkers, especially fun, easy-going, and attractive Shane Wilson. But when someone starts leaving flowers with special meanings on his desk every morning, Cody doesn't know what to think, and can't even begin to speculate who they're from. And when he realizes how hard he's been crushing on Shane, he can only hope he gets good news sometime in the next twelve days--bright and beautiful as all the lovely flowers. Will Cody ever find out who his secret admirer is? Or will he have to leave the company without ever solving the mystery? #books #lgbtq #authors #authorsofinstagram #writersofinstagram #writingcommunity #comingsoon #queerbooks #queerfiction #queerauthor #queerlit https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfk80X3s-Uf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Falling in love with genres you’ve never considered writing and barely read anything from is the greatest gift I’ve gotten from writing and editing my WIP. Allowing myself to lean into those dark themes and give myself the goosebumps as I’m writing a horror scene has been so fun. As a kid, I’ve always been curious about dark themes. Reading about Stockholm Blood Bath in history class and that mixed with the fascination of vampires and the lore of the “real vampires” was so fun. But saying that, I’ve never enjoyed watching horror films, even some thrillers have been too much for me. Until I started reading thriller books, sure some of them had a good romance plot, but the suspense had me on my toes and I’ve wanted so much to see who the villain would be. After reading a few thrillers and suspense novels, I cracked the code on what I think makes a thriller and/or suspense novel a great one. The villain is right under your nose. And knowing that fact helped me plot better and write better foreshadowing, make the reader suspect everything and everyone. Which circles back to reading in both genres you’re writing in, but also other genres you don’t write in are actually helpful! What’s the worst thing that can happen? That you didn’t enjoy the book or the genre, but that’s awesome to still know. Because then you’ll know what to not add to your projects. For I’ve both discovered that I enjoy reading certain fantasy tropes and thrillers, but also within the romance genre, there’s so many tropes that I didn’t know I both enjoyed and dislike. There’s a reason why the advice for writers is to read. It helps.

Hello dear friends,
How is the weather in your corner of the world? In my parts, spring is coming, and the weather is growing warmer, I'm even waking up by the birds outside my window.
I'm spending my days reading the light novel Bloom Into You: Regarding Saeki Sayaka. Have you heard about it? The main story, Bloom Into You, was made into an anime, it's a lovely story.
Since I know it's a well-loved series, I've recorded my readings too and published them on my YouTube channel. You can find it on youtube.com/@maratellsstories.

The Mark of the Wolf is a book about six teenagers who are suddenly and involuntarily initiated into a hidden world monsters and the supernatural.  The story is set in Lawrence, Kansas, 1998.  The Satanic Panic has died down in most of the country, but lingers on in Middle America even as the New Age and Neo-Pagan movements continue to grow.
The action of the story begins when a young woman is attacked, in front of her entire church community, by what everyone thinks is an oversized dog.  Convinced that the attack was otherworldly in nature and that she is now cursed, she recalls the whispered accusations of witchcraft within the school, and seeks out those accused in ironic and desperate hope that those rumors are true.
The coven she imagines is not what she finds.  They are not sallow-skinned, richly dressed maniacs, but rather mismatched misfits largely indistinguishable from the rest of the student body.  Nevertheless, she begs them for aid.  Despite deep reservations, they promise to help her.
