Kids in the Archive: Special Announcement
For today's Kids in the Archive entry, I thought I'd switch it up and try something a little different by responding to a piece of fan mail from the first year the show was on the air. And if you did send the kids in the hall fan mail in the late 80s/early 90s - don't worry i didn't actually read any of it aside from this letter, because while this fan was not writing to me specifically (how could she, i was over a decade away from being born when this was sent) i think i might have some information that's uniquely suited to answer her inquiry:
Tumblr media
Lucky for both of us, Kat Kvill, they did bring Buddy back. Many times. For you see, Kat, Buddy's powers cannot be contained to one monologue. Even after a prolific run on The Kids in the Hall, Buddy still reappeared in his own autobiography:
Tumblr media
surrealist independent webseries,
Tumblr media
multitudes of live performances,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and even nearly came to primetime as a cartoon:
Tumblr media
what's that, kat kvill? how do i know this? you see, i am the foremost expert on buddy cole's legendary career. documenting buddy's history and unearthing these many lifetimes that may have become lost media has been my passion project for the past year. the real-life tale behind our favorite lounge lizard must be told...
and I'm here to announce that soon you all can be part of that story.
Crowdfunding for The Buddy Cole Documentary launches on Indigogo on Thursday, November 16th, 2023
stay tuned for more updates from myself as well as my executive producers bruce mcculloch and paul bellini as we commence launch week!
in addition to helping support a young queer filmmaker give this comedy icon his proper place in the history books, the crowdfunding campaign also features a multitude of exclusive prizes you can only get from donating to this film: from exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and videos of never-released buddy cole material to personalized thank you messages from the kids in the hall and a chance to virtually attend buddy cole's happy hour, we are taking every opportunity to immerse supporters in the wonderfully queer world of buddy cole. so pull up a seat at the bar, this is one story you don't want to miss.

Hey Filmblr!
It's been a while, but I directed another music video and got to try some cool new techniques. We did some crazy visuals with tape sculptures and crystal refraction. It would mean a lot to me if you checked it out!

I have had it pretty good teacher wise so far in my film program, 3 of my classes are taught by women, another the male teacher has clearly shut down behaviour dismissing women, my writing teacher I've known for years actually and would to the same, probably in a funny way to boot.
So when I got a rank queer phobic vibe from my first directing class with this teacher, I really took every opportunity to test him and he really managed to fail the vibe check hard as hellvwithout saying anything too incriminatingly queerphobic. Y'all I was running on less than 4 hours sleep, and a frankly unsafe amount of caffeine for my potsie body, due to a misunderstanding of the exact balls to the wall amount of caffeine in a Starbucks cold brew. So with a pretty absent impulse control and an extra beta blocker to compensate for the resulting tachycardia, I'm really not sure my sass was hitting the mark each time, like a lot of talking out of turn.
So coming home and debriefing has meant recognizing a few things
A. Check how much caffeine is in shit so as not to hit the floor
B. My previous anxiety/loss of verbal function under stress did not equal impulse control, in fact may have compensatex for a lack of or contributed to a hindered development of impulse control
C. I'm incredibly grateful for the amazing teachers I've worked with so far. I started out afraid I'd face teachers like this every class. Most of my classes are spaces I am empowered to speak up and challenge the status quoe beyond just my presence in the space. And very importantly there are male teachers setting a good example for these young men going into the industry.
Planning on being a little less caffeinated and more precise about it, but I am more committed than ever to taking space for my voice, and backing up any other marginalized voices in my class prepared to do the same.
To anyone else staring down similar attitudes in school, remember this is the time to talk back. The reality is we're all going to have to pick our battles in this industry, not to mention this world. But the consequences aren't the same as on set. I can piss of this prick of a teacher now by calling him out, but he can't fire me from school, he can't tank my future indie projects. Certainly not when I'm already building a network of both professional connections and support.
Which to be fair their are intersections I haven't experienced, people who have different social consequences than I do in my whitness. I also don't know about Hollywood politics, I know Albertan entertainers. But I do think school is the safest testing ground in building up your voice in whatever way you find feasible.
Besides like I'll let myself be nickel and dimed to go to school, just to roll over for misogynist pigs.

Oh How Times Have Changed
For years Felicity Myers and her wife Vivian struggled to make ends meet. Living in the basement of Vivian’s parents’ house, the women had no choice but to empty their accounts and start over at the start of every month. For years Felicity and her wife worked jobs they hated for nickels and dimes while they each built their careers on the side. Many nights, Felicity would come home from work only to shower before sitting behind her computer to work on her latest short film with her best friend Connor; that was back in their twenties. Now Felicity, Vivian, and Connor are in their thirties, and Felicity and Connor have turned their side hustle into a full-fledged production company. Now, as they, and their families, lounge out on a beach in the South of France, Felicity can’t help but marvel at how much things have changed.

📣 On April 28th, our friend and fellow filmmaker Jules Rosskam is holding the first public event connected to his newest film project, DESIRE LINES. No stranger to the 13th Gen family, in 2018 his award-winning first-person essay film PATERNAL RITES - produced by Marc Smolowitz - had it's world premiere at @moma's DOC FORTNIGHT and went on to screen around the globe at BFI Flare, Tampa Bay International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Inside Out LGBT Film Festival and more. His new film project DESIRE LINES centers around trans masculinity and cruising culture - parts of queer history that have gone unnoticed in relation to each other - until now. You can support the film by making a donation (link below) OR by coming out to a fundraising event in Los Angeles on April 28th from 6-8pm where a short pilot concept of the film will be screened, followed by a conversation about trans masculine representation onscreen with celebrated icons in the community, including Amos Mac (film/TV writer); Scott Turner Schofield (Emmy-nominated actor, founder of Speaking of Transgender); D'Lo (actor, writer & comedian); including a special performance by Ezra Michel, musician & founder of Pussyboy Clothing! 💥 Tickets / donations: 👉 https://givebutter.com/DESIRELINES 💥 Every dollar gets Jules and his phenomenal filmmaking team one step closer to finishing the film!

I just think older films are so fascinating! And the few things that my little sister and I agree on is watching French language films (mostly because she’s pretty fluent in French and I did film studies)
Not even the “important” ones either. I really enjoyed Сере́бряные коньки́ (Serebryanye konki)/The Silver Skates and part of that was just enjoying listening to the Russian actors.
Explore your films! Find things you hate and ones you love!

Dear Disney,
about this:
Tumblr media
The fit check and hair slick thing are romantic tropes in film:
Tumblr media
See?
Now, you are film makers. I take it you have all the experience and the know-how there is when it comes to TV and film. So, when you use these tropes, I have to assume that you want to tell us one of two things: Either you want to show us that there is a romatic story to be expected between two characters or you want us to believe that there is one when in fact there isn't. In this case (this case being Loki), that could be considered queerbaiting.
