He continued, “There’s so much white mediocrity that gets celebrated, and Black people, we have to be absolutely flawless to get half of [that] anyway. So, I’m slowly training myself out of that and being like, ‘No shit. You deserve love just for existing.’ And that has taught me to be a lot more loving as well, in a weird way.”

A public note based on personal experience:

When you publicly come out by choice, when you feel secure and ready and willing, even then it’s terrifying and you will feel waves of regret and confusion and discord within yourself.

When the choice part is taken away, when the security and readiness and willingness are smothered, when coming out is forced, the grief that comes with it is soul crushing.

No matter the motivation behind it, the act of coming out causes traumatic stress which can take a lifetime to recover from, if you ever do.

Coming out is not simple. It’s not quick. It’s not like ripping off a bandaid. It’s a complex surgery that lasts your whole life and you’re awake for all of it. And everyone in the world gets to sit in the viewing room and watch and comment. Once in a while they get to come in and poke your organs or even remove one and examine it. It’s life long discomfort.

No one should ever be pressured into coming out. Ever.

i'm going to cry??? i love her so much it's so amazing to have queer actors, especially non binary actors and hes. talking about it and it's just... i've never really seen myself in anything, like yeah in some cartoons and in community but there was only really one cartoon ive seen with a character so much like me with an autistic and queer storyline and in community he's not canonically queer and yeah May isnt canonically autistic but it's like... a non binary character. with a story so similar to mine, and they're talking about it, and i just feel so seen whenever Justin talks about being queer.

being non binary can be so lonely, but when i see things like this, or talk to people like me, or just remember that theres people like me, like her... everything feels so much safer. so much more secure. yes, it can be lonely, but it can bring us together and it can create a community. i love being non binary and May helped me accept that i am. because when i was so scared of being outside the binary, and when i was trying to convince myself that if i'm not a girl i can be a boy, i saw May and they helped me. because non binary actors help me know that this wont stop me from doing what i love and having a good life. because if theres people like him, it's okay.
