So I'm doing my first full qt reread since rott, and also my first audiobook listen, and was listening to the thief on the way home today and had Some Thoughts.
In the conversation about Gen being named after Eugenides the god, and how Gen's mother was a thief but his father wanted him to be a soldier, Sophos is surprised, either that Gen's father was a soldier or that Gen knows his father. And Gen, replies, perhaps a bit acidly, that no he's not illegitimate, and yes he even has siblings from the same father, and yes his siblings are all in respectable professions.
Which of course, given the rumours and speculation about Gen's parentage in rott raises a few questions. If we take as fact the belief that Gen rarely lies outright (but rather gives partial truths and lets people fill in the blanks in a way that suits him), what does this say about how Gen views the MoW? And vice versa? That despite rumours, despite what must've been a complex and at times painful situation, that they viewed the other as their "real" father/son? We already knew Hektor cares for Gen deeply, he funds Gen's heist in The Thief to save Gen's life (though of course we only find out the truth of this in rott), and I've always thought part of the reason he pushed Gen towards being a soldier rather than The Thief of Eddis, was to protect Gen from the isolation of the thieves, their ultimate death in falling, and from the Eddisian court which already viewed Gen with suspicion that could be life threatening as it was after Lader's death. Idk. I was struck by that convo with Sophos in a way I wasn't before.
And then further, I've noticed that in the myths told by Gen and the Magus so far, Eugenides the god is always referred to as "Earth's son", and the "woodcutter's son", despite the fact that his origin tale focuses on the woodcutter's wife's desire for a child (and presumably Eugenides the god was raised by the woodcutter and his wife, we hear of Earth visiting only in disguise to see her son). So, in a way, the god Eugenides also has three parents, just as Gen the thief does. And each Eugenides is deeply loved and wanted by his non-biological (or suspected non-biological) parent. Another similarity between Gen and his god?
I really dk where I was going with this. Just. Thinking My Silly Little Thoughts.

One sided (maybe) Torisai hanahaki fic idea that i may or may not use depending on my motivation:
Toritsuka has feelings for Saiki and since saiki sort of finds out instantly Toritsuka doesn't confess (this version is where the person has to confess to get rid of the flowers) and saiki sort of half turns him down but not really so Toritsuka continues having feelings for saiki.
Time goes on and he starts feeling pain in his lungs and he doesn't know why. It starts getting harder to breathe. He starts to cough up Petals and leaves and he has no idea what's going on, saiki finds out instantly again but he doesn't really know either so they do research and find out its hanahaki!!!
They find out that it might end up killing Toritsuka but even if Toritsuka confesses it won't really work and Toritsuka can't really get rid of his feelings, we get fun saiki angst of "everythings always my fault it's it's fault I don't like him and now he's gonna DIE"
They find out that Toritsuka can get surgery to remove the flowers!!! But he'll lose all feelings of romance and memories of the person he was in love with :((( And there's still a chance of the flowers growing back.
Toritsuka doesn't want to lose his memories of Saiki but Saiki wants Toritsuka to live, ensue sad but cute at the same time "Why do you care for someone like me???" Sort of stuff anyways toritsuka gets surgery and forgets about saiki and by extension the psychickers (sort of)
Toritsuka back at school, no memories of saiki, lost all attraction for girls, people are confused because "Holy shit the perv is being a perv???" And saikis sort of like "I'm the worst, Toritsukas not even Toritsuka anymore" and now that Toritsuka doesn't remember saiki he has no friends and is sort of lonely :( Toritsuka also knows he got the surgery for Hanahaki, he just has no idea who the person he fell for was
Anyways from here the plot goes two way option 1 is where Toritsuka slowly ends up becoming friends with the psychickers again, he bonds with everyone and they all get close again, saiki ends up being his best friend and he's happy, even if he's not in love anymore option 2 is slow burn where Toritsuka starts to get feelings for saiki again and the flowers start growing back. Over the period of time seperated with toritsuka saiki falls in love with him and is now kind of sad that he didn't find out earlier, he blocks out his feelings of Toritsuka as sort of self-punishment for what he did, thinking it's all his fault (it's not obviously) and ignores Toritsukas slowly growing feelings for him until Toritsuka starts coughing up flowers again, Toritsuka takes this as meaning saiki not loving him back and he's starting on planning to get the surgery again but then saiki confesses to him in fear of Toritsuka getting hurt again yadayadayada Torisai happy ending:)

For Yuletide this year, I wrote this pseudo-Vox article for @newtsoftheworldunite's gift. The premise is a modern-day feature article in the QT universe where Shakespeare wrote a play about the king who married the queen who cut off his hand, and what the modern discourse about their real relationship would look like in both historian and fandom circles.
I had a lot of fun with it, and I crammed it full of both fandom references and non-fandom references. I made a list of all the ones I could find when I reread it (I'm sure I overlooked a few), which you can check out below the cut.
Princess Bythesea novels by Phresine are a reference to in-world bodice rippers from @hoeratius's Princess Diaries AU, for which both she and @hippolytas have written fic.
The Genny Diaries is a play on The Lizzie Bennet Diaries
The Setran Eugenides & Ira is a nod to my beloved Bride & Prejudice, a Bollywood Pride & Prejudice adaptation (and imo the best P&P adaptation)
Wikipedia talk pages are basically a discussion page on every Wikipedia article to help editors behind the scenes make decisions, fix citations, and discuss what should/shouldn’t be included on the page
Clothing references: the birds and twigs are a canon reference (thanks, Pheris), the wild fennel robes are a nod to a comment on a post MWT reblogged that someone else later made art for (she also reblogged the IRL coats which are beautiful), and the “ornate, traditional” clothing was a reference to Greece's really stunning regional clothing.
The rings were inspired by posy rings, which were popular in England and France in the late Medieval period. The inscription on Irene’s ring—Yours to command—was a legit inscription I found on a list so you can imagine how fast I added it in.
The poem is heavily pilfered from Sappho fragment 94, although it’s been edited to pay tribute to the most beautiful woman on earth
The “life size statue” fights were @hippolytas's idea (among other things in this fic, but that’s what I remember most clearly)
The Friends finale reference is a little joke for myself. Ross/Rachel were *the* will-they-won’t-they couple of the 90s and 00s, and I told some friends earlier this year that I think if Matthew Perry and Courtney Cox had had 20% less on-screen chemistry, the romance narrative might’ve shifted to who Monica would ultimately pick and let that be the big finale moment (and, frankly, have given Ross and Rachel’s storyline more creating room—but I digress).
The RPF fics are all references to QT fanfics. The missing scenes and wedding night fics are obvious, but the two AUs are are this sci-fi one where the Attolia AI trains the guard and one of my own, Where Did You Come From, Where Did You Go?
I'll update the list if I notice any others, but feel free to ping me if you think I've missed one! There are some other easter eggs in there, so if you think you spotted something else—you're probably right!
Thanks to everyone who has kudosed and commented on this fic, and to @thecrenellations and @cartograffiti and @hippolytas for their help and cheerleading, would legitimately have lost my mind if not for them <3

I still don't think i LIKE audiobooks, as a personal preference and as someone with auditory processing struggles sometimes, but this tge listen has made my lengthy daily commute so much less onerous, so I think I'm gonna try more audiobooks (but again just for books that I already love and know very well)
Tmrw, we start queens thief

So exciting that you loved Queen’s Thief so much! It is most definitely worthy of discussion!!
My favorite thing is hearing about people’s experience reading book 2, especially with regards to the portrayal of Irene! At one point did you start to sympathize with her? And at what point did you realize she’s coming Nahuseresh? I know when I first read it, I stayed Stressed and Confused pretty much until the part when she gives her speech (about gifts and bribery) to Nahuseresh above the battlefield, but I have some friends who noticed what she was up to much earlier! (And of course on reread, I see so many of the hints!)
Also you mentioned you want to talk about the last book! What was your favorite moment and/or was there any scene that shocked/surprised you?
Finally, if you haven’t already discovered them, I’d just like to recommend the amazing Queen’s thief art done by @emilybeemartin, and @shebsart. The QT fandom is blessed to have SO many amazing pieces of art dedicated to it, but these two have some of the largest collections and I’m forever stunned by them.
Hiiiii!!!! Oh yes please let's talk about book 2!
It was easily the most complex out of all of them. It was VERY hard to guess what the Queen was thinking, since this one, out of all the books!, was the most about her, yet it still wasn't told from a first person POV. I wavered between "please don't be dumb and silly please don't be dumb and silly" and "naww she's playing everyone again, I just can't guess HOW" and that made me so angry!!!!! Lol.
The scene where Gen was recaptured and then the earring scene following that, were of course fantastic.
As for the last book, I have to reread the entire battle season. I just have to. Poor Pheris betraying and saving Eugenides at the same time and just hoping for mercy is so endearing. And I need to get the details of the Mede's camp again and get a list of what exactly Eugenides damaged when he was there ;)
I also liked the way the army train was described. It was very vivid how a mass of armed and heavily supplied people would move across the countryside. The author obviously did her research, and I was delighted to find out that it moved no differently than an ordinary group of hikers, just on a much larger scale!
I have already discovered TQT art and it's stunning!!! I'm so glad people made art, it would have been so hard to enjoy the fandom if there wasn't at least a little bit of art!! What actually got me hooked on TQT in the first place(!) was @/emilybeemartin's Gen vs. Costis art and @/mothsartart's Puppet King. They are both awesome.
Thanks so much for asking, friend!!! :)

Three ships: gen/irene (am rereading qt), ged/tenar (still riding earthsea reread high), doctor/clara (always)
Last song: last heard belting "this river is wild" the killers in my car
Currently reading: king of attolia by megan whalen turner, the unspoken name by a.k. larkwood, winterkeep by kristin cashore, still a lot of and about wallace stevens, the lightning thief by rick riordan for library book club purposes
Last film: the persian version (2023) - it was interesting, kind of reminded me of saving face (2004) in its themes and humor, but the most compelling part was definitely shireen's storyline
Currently craving: squash. we were going to make a good butternut squash recipe for dinner tonight but we forgot one (1) ingredient

I literally didn't know you were @eedis one day you were just showing up on my dash and I was like okay sure
lol yes I used to be eeddis but I've moved away from QT, took me a while to change b/c I wanted something with a similar vibe/reference, then I reread The Goblin Emperor and a little while later while I was thinking about it again and then I remembered the "morhath" bit
I feel like I need to make Several posts about this because I will probably do (and therefore probably win) nano which means new nano winner icon on December 1st (knock on shitty fake wood) and thus I will become completely unrecognizable

@soldier-poet-king tagged me about books!
Last read:
I just finished another listen to The Goblin Emperor because I love it too much and only ever make it like six months before I’m back again. Other recent reads were Thornhedge which was darling and Divine Rivals which was very cute for a silly YA romance.
Current reads:
I’m slowly working on The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms which is kind of dragging for me. I don’t generally dnf so I’m gonna try to finish it but I doubt I’ll go find the other books. I also started a reread of The Wizard Butler which is just one of my favorite comfort books. So gentle and chill.
Next read:
Since Fran is gonna read Blood Ladders FINALLY (I’m very ready to watch her die) I got the audiobooks and I’m planning on listening to them on the plane this weekend. I’ve had The Left Hand of Darkness sitting on my shelf for forever so that’s also happening when I’m back. I also have the “second” Miles Vorkosigan ebook (meaning book 7) so maybe I’ll start that on the plane if I get tired of audiobooks. I’m also planning a QT reread with my coworker where we want to annotate all the books and scream about them over coffee.
@ihaveonlymydreams @batmantaking-hobbits2gallifrey tell me about books!!!

Between the personal qt reread, as well as reading TaT aloud, I've been kind of all over the place with my tbr. But I read Silver In The Wood today, and I did like it, although I wish it was longer and more detailed. Felt kind of like reading the outline of a book that could have so much more in it. Maybe it's just that I'm spoiled with reading so many long and rambling series x)
Anyways I haven't decided yet if I want to read the second one, seeing as romance isn't my cup of tea and I like where this one ended. I think I'll move on to Gideon The Ninth for now.
