#DailyDevotion Jesus Cries Out To The Father With A Sure And Certain Hope
Psalm 22 16Dogs gather around Me; a gang of villains surrounds Me. They have dug holes in My hands and feet. 17I can count all My bones. They watch; they gloat over Me. 18They divide My clothes among themselves and throw dice for My garment.
Like I said in a previous devotion, it is like David is there, watching his see and his Adonai being crucified. I'm certain he is in a prophetic trance when composing this psalm and has not experienced anything like this in any figurative way. Well, sure, he certainly has had enemies, but everything that follows doesn't point to a moment in his life.
Jesus being nailed to the cross certainly gives us a very literal depiction of him nailed to the cross by his hands and his feet. Hanging here and looking down as he asphyxiates, he can indeed see all his bones and count them. As he is being crucified he sees the crowds and those who sought his death while below him he sees the agents of his crucifixion throwing dice for the tunic he wore. Contemplating this we see what our sins deserve, the ones we committed and the ones we through about committed. The sins which actively hurt our fellows and the sins where we did not help our fellows but we could have.
19But You, O LORD, don't go far away; O My Strength, hurry to help Me. 20Save My life from the sword, My one life from the clutches of a dog.21Save Me from the lion's mouth, and from the horns of the wild bull. You answered me!
Jesus in the midst of his suffering and pain, hanging on the cross, surrounded by his enemies continues to put his faith in his Father. He petitions Him not to be far from him. He still calls upon Him to be his strength in all this to hurry and help him. You can hear this prayer for help as Jesus cries out, “Into your hands I commit my spirit.” The darkness has dissipated. God's wrath has been propitiation. Our atonement has been made complete. With these words Jesus knows the Father has answered him and will not leave him in the grave.
22I will spread Your fame among My brothers; I will praise You in the congregation: 23“You who fear the LORD, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him! Fear Him, all you descendants of Israel!
At his resurrection and appearance to his disciples Jesus spread the fame of the Father and praised Him in the congregation. Jesus' brothers, i.e. his disciples continue to this day spreading the good news of the God our Father and our LORD Jesus Christ. We all are called to praise Him for the work of our salvation completed in Christ Jesus. Starting from Jerusalem, to Samaria to the ends of the earth Jesus' Church praises God the Father and our LORD Jesus Christ to Jacob and the descendants of Israel. That is what Jesus sets out his disciples to do in Matthew 28 before he ascends to the right hand of the Father.
Some may complain, “What kind of Father would do that to his son?” One who loved you and didn't want to see you get what you deserve for your sins against Him. The only other option is to cast you into the Lake of Fire to be punished with the fallen angels forever. These people rarely see Jesus volunteered for this job, for being a sacrifice. Like Isaac before him, he does not struggle against being sacrificed but submits to the will of his Father. Jesus is in on it also. He submits his will to the Father's will in praying, “Not my will be done but your will be done.”
Heavenly Father, grant us faith and thanksgiving for all your Son Jesus Christ has done for our salvation upon the cross so it will lead us to a godly life. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Top 5 reads from 2023
Again thank you @counterwiddershins for the tag!!
The list:
1. Les Mis
2. Ninety-three
3. Twenty years later
4. The Picture of Dorian Gray
5. Rudolf, Crown Prince and Rebel
Les Mis:
The scale, the symbolism, the amount of beautiful emotions and hilarious scenarios within the book! How can anyone refuse Hugo’s infodumps? Definitely not me.
Ninety-three:
I really enjoyed how the book was written, it’s very tightly structured and quick-paced. Although not free of Hugo’s philosophical flaws, and I’m not sure if I like the conclusion that much, the characters, the tension, and the emotional damage caused definitely secures a strong second for it.
Twenty Years Later:
The better sequel. Yes. A second that is BETTER than the first. One can clearly find how Dumas’s storytelling skills improved, while keeping all the virtues of the former work. Since my beloved rat child is in the book you would have expected its appearance on the list.
The Picture of Dorian Gray:
Read for Patrice Alexsandre, stayed and glued in the gay chaos jail for Wilde. It’s very different in nature from the books listed above, more personal and smaller in scale, but definitely not lacking in fun and pain. The gay triad of Dorian, Basil, and Henry is perfect.
Rudolf, Crown Prince and Rebel:
The only nonfiction! Hamann is a wonderful writer, it’s only fifth because I didn’t finish it. Yet. I got sidetracked. The book has a very lucid feeling of which I enjoy greatly in writings of historical topics.
(Also thank you Fitz so much for this one)
Tagging
@pilferingapples @fitzrove @riotstarruika @psalm22-6 because I’m really curious but no pressure

in the first part of les mis, in the book, the bishop visits a conventionist and hugo tells us that he's basically been living in exile because everyone hates him. why? did the political atmosphere in this tiny random town change so much that even the townsfolk hated him? i don't understand. did people really want the ancien regime back?
Hello!
Warning: this answer is going to vastly, vastly oversimplify everything about the political climate of late 18/early 19C France, or we'd be here all day.
So here's the thing: support for the Republic was never universal, or even remotely universal, even at the peak of the French Revolution. There was pretty much a civil war going on about it for years!
A lot of people were sincerely and , as they saw it, devoutly loyal to the Ancien Regime. Being royalist tended to go along with being very Catholic--for many people, there was still a sense that the king had been chosen by god--and the Revolution, to those people , was a violent blasphemy that brought war and unrest to the country and destroyed the True government.
Given how people in Digne feel about their church and their Bishop, and how they treat people who are openly Bonapartist, it seems like they've always been a royalist town. (Napoleon was noooot exactly carrying on the ideals of the republic, but plenty of people saw them as the same thing) .
So this isn't a shift in attitude, it's just how a lot of places were. If there'd been no support for the monarchy, the Allies would have had a much harder time putting a king back in charge of France. Lots of people wanted the monarchy! as to why...whoo boy that is WAY too long to do justice to here. But yeah! This is very much how a lot of people did continue to see the revolutionaries--even when LM was published, many people were very angry about the Bishop kneeling to G, because they considered him an evil murdering usurper--but those critics are @psalm22-6's research XD

[Mid-Morning Prayer]

[INTRODUCTION]
O God, come to our aid.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.
[Hymn ]
Come, Holy Spirit, live in us
With God the Father and the Son,
And grant us your abundant grace
To sanctify and make us one.
May mind and tongue made strong in love
Your praise throughout the world proclaim,
And may that love within our hearts
Set fire to others with its flame.
Most blessèd Trinity of love,
For whom the heart of man was made,
To you be praise in timeless song,
And everlasting homage paid.
<Stanbrook Abbey Hymnal>
[PSALMS OF THE DAY]
#Psalm22(23)
The good shepherd
Whoever eats this bread will live for ever, alleluia.
The Lord is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing.
He has taken me to green pastures,
he has led me to still waters;
he has healed my spirit.
He has led me along right paths
for his own name’s sake.
Even if I walk in the valley of the shadow of death,
I shall fear no evil, for you are with me:
your rod and your staff give me comfort.
You have set a table before me
in the sight of my enemies.
You have anointed my head with oil,
and my cup overflows.
Truly goodness and kindness will follow me
all the days of my life.
For long years I shall live
in the house of the Lord.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.
Whoever eats this bread will live for ever, alleluia.
#Psalm75(76)
Thanksgiving after victory
The Lord will come in glory and he will do wonderful things for his saints, alleluia.
God’s name is known in Judah,
in Israel his name is great.
His dwelling-place is in Salem,
in Zion his habitation.
He has destroyed gleaming bows,
shields, swords, and whole armies.
God of Wonders, your glory shines
from the mountains of spoil.
The proud and powerful are despoiled
and now they sleep their sleep –
all men have lost their strength.
God of Jacob, at the sound of your rebuke
chariot and horse fall stunned.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.
The Lord will come in glory and he will do wonderful things for his saints, alleluia.
#Psalm75(76)
Offer prayers and gifts to the Lord your God, alleluia.
You bring terror and no-one will stand up to you
when your anger is roused.
From the heavens you have made your judgement known:
the earth trembled and lay still
when God rose up to give judgement
to save all the humble of the world.
For the rage of man will proclaim your greatness
and the remnants of that rage will make a festival for you.
Make vows to the Lord and fulfil them.
Let all around bring gifts to the God of Terror,
to him who takes away the breath of princes
and brings terror to the kings of the earth.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.
Offer prayers and gifts to the Lord your God, alleluia.
CONCLUSION
[Short Reading]
#1Corinthians6:19-20©
Your body, you know, is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you since you received him from God.
You are not your own property; you have been bought and paid for.
That is why you should use your body for the glory of God.
℣. My soul is longing and yearning for the courts of the Lord.
℟. My heart and my soul ring out their joy to the living God.
[Let us pray.]
Be gracious, Lord, to us who serve you,
and in your kindness increase your gifts of grace within us:
so that, fervent in faith, hope and love,
we may be ever on the watch
and persevere in doing what you command.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Let us praise the Lord.
– Thanks be to God.
