I hope you guys enjoy it!!!
(Also,, I got this idea from one of @fanficwriter284 's fics as well as my own ideas!!)

synopsis. you’ve been harboring a crush on your neighbor since middle school, and now as junior year nears a close and prom is just around the corner, your relationship gets thrown through a loop with the introduction of a new girl. now you have to make it through seeing him with her when it’s so obvious that he belongs with you.
details. bff!Jungwon x fem!reader, neighbor au, bffs2l, ft. ex-boyfriend jake and sister wonyoung, mostly fluff, lots of pining
warnings. none
word count. 4008
Tumblr media
You had never particularly liked windows.
A weird thing to dislike, true, but there was always something unsettling about them to you.
Maybe it’s because they were so transparent. Windows couldn’t hide anything, and hiding was something you’d been doing for a very long time.
However, there was one window you liked.
You peeked your head through the curtain, looking across and seeing the exact same window you were looking through but on the house next door.
Taped to the glass was a piece of paper, Jungwon’s messy handwriting reading ‘meet you at 7’ staring back at you.
Jungwon, your neighbor and best friend since you were six.
The paper was a fun habit the two of you had started when he got his phone taken away for prank calling your principal (it was Riki’s idea). In his desperation for homework answers, he had taken a bold sharpie to a notebook, and now it was the chosen source of communication.
You rushed to grab your things, running down the stairs and out the door, a way-too-chipper-for-seven am spring in your step when you fell into step with Jungwon.
“You ready for karaoke night tonight?” You asked, referring to the weekly karaoke night you had on Fridays. Jungwon was always ready for karaoke night.
“Oh shoot, um I actually can’t make it this week. I’m sorry.”
“What do you mean?” You pouted at your best friend. He’d never missed karaoke night before.
“I actually have plans with Sohee tonight.”
You roll your eyes but make sure Jungwon can’t see it. Last month when he’d told you Kim Sohee had started talking to him you had laughed out loud, which made him grumpy for the next week.
Sohee was in the grade above you, she was captain of the cheer squad, and the last time you checked, had been dating Jake Sim for the last year.
You were understandably shocked that she had suddenly become interested in your best friend.
“I thought you were hanging out tomorrow?”
“Yeah, she made plans for tonight and tomorrow.”
“Without telling you?”
“Look, she didn’t know it was karaoke night okay? Can you drop it?”
You take a deep breath, reminding yourself to just be happy for your best friend.
“Yeah, of course.. so what’d you get on that science test?”
“73”
“Jungwon!” You gasp, and he laughs sheepishly.
The rest of your walk to school feels normal, just you and Jungwon messing around while complaining about the classes you’re about to enter.
“Jungwon!”
You’re cut off by the shrill voice of Kim Sohee as soon as you enter the school building, Jungwon’s phone still in your hand as you two take a picture of the top of your foreheads.
She beckons him over, and he looks at you for a second as if contemplating if he should go, but a quick nudge of your elbow has him going over to her, yelling something about sending you the picture and seeing you in class.
Your smile drops once he’s gone, turning into an awkward grimace as you navigate the halls alone— an action you’ve never had to do before, since you and Jungwon were already solidified best friends by the time you stepped foot into a school building.
‘You did the right thing,’ you remind yourself as you approach your locker.
Best friends support each other. Best friends like when the other is happy.
You slam your locker shut harder than you meant to— all those other best friends aren’t stupidly in love with Yang Jungwon like you are.
Tumblr media
“All I’m saying is that if this was an episode of backyardigans-”
Your sentence is cut off by a car horn, and you and Jungwon both stop your steps as you turn to see who it was.
The two of you were already running a little late, because you’d stopped to get coffee before school this morning and the line was longer than usual.
You’d wished you’d just kept walking once you see who it is.
“Wonnie, do you want a ride?”
Sohee smiles her sickly sweet grin at you, and you fight to urge to make a face at her.
He looks over at you next to him before speaking.
“Uh I’m okay walking, thank you.”
“Oh come on don’t be silly, I’m already here and my dad took the top off of my car this morning!”
Jungwon glances at you again, and you give him a tight smile.
“It’s okay, Won, we’ve been doing this long enough I know the way to school by now.”
He breaks out into a goofy grin at your comment, hopping in the passenger side of Sohee’s convertible.
She grabs his face and smashes her lips to his— an action that has you immediately diverting your eyes from their direction, willing your eyes to stop watering.
When you look back she gives you a satisfied smirk, putting one hand on the wheel and driving away while your best friend sits stunned silence in the passenger seat.
That morning you’re late to class, but your teacher lets you off the hook because of the mascara smears dried down your cheeks.
Jungwon misses karaoke night again that week.
Tumblr media
“And he yelled at me for having your number on my face, can you believe that?”
It’s Saturday morning and you’re sitting on Jungwon’s bed while you tell him about what the band director had said yesterday when you’d marched at halftime.
Jungwon had gone out with Sohee and some of the other cheerleaders after the game and forgot to text you last night, but Saturday morning breakfast with the Yang’s was part of your routine at this point.
“He doesn’t want me to do it next game— but don’t worry, no old man is gonna make me stop supporting my best friend!” You declare, jabbing your finger into his pillow.
Jungwon is quiet for a moment before speaking.
“Well, maybe you shouldn’t.”
You raise your eyebrow at him, “what do you mean?”
“Like wear my number.. if your director gets mad. Plus Sohee said it makes it look like we’re dating.”
You frown. Did Jungwon really hate the idea of dating you that much?
“Won, I mean this in the nicest way but frankly I don’t care about what either one of them thinks about us.”
“Well I do”
“What?”
He sighs, “it’s just, Sohee doesn’t like that we’re always hanging out because it kinda seems like we’re dating ya know? She wore my number on her face yesterday too and everyone asked if me and you broke up.”
You feel guilty at how happy that thought makes you. People actually thought you and Jungwon were dating.
“Okay so?”
“It just doesn’t look good if people think me and you are together and me and her actually are.”
“Won, since when do you care about what people think?”
“I just do okay? Can you just do this for me? I think I really like her.”
You make sure you’re looking the other way to hide the tears building up, “yeah, whatever won that’s fine.”
“Are you mad at me?”
You sneak a peak at his face, an action you immediately regret because looking at his shiny eyes and pouty lips only intensifies the feeling of being helplessly in love with your best friend while he chases someone else.
“No, I’m just gonna head home okay? I’ve got a lot of homework to do today.”
Jungwon calls after you, offering to do it together, but you’re already down the hall.
“Yn honey, are you not staying for breakfast?” Jungwons mother looks at you softly, and something about it has the tears immediately falling down your face.
“No, I’m really busy today so I’m just gonna head out. Thank you.”
She stares in shock as you run out the door, immediately marching up to Jungwons room to ask what was up— you hadn’t missed Saturday breakfast with the Yangs in six years.
That night you scroll through your phone aimlessly, Wikihow articles on “how to not fall for your best friend” and “how to get over a guy you never had a chance with anyway” pulled up on every tab.
It comforts you a little, and you peek out your window to see if Jungwon is in his room, already sketching out ‘sorry for ditching you’ in your newest notebook.
However, he wouldn’t have seen it because even though he’s in his room, Jungwon is pacing back and forth not paying a single ounce of attention to you.
He’s on the phone, and it doesn’t look fun with the way his hand is flailing about as he talks or the deep heaves of his chest from repeated sighing.
You watch for longer than you probably should, what first started out as trying to read his lips inevitably turning into just staring at them.
He tosses his phone onto his bed (still with the same cars blanket on it from middle school) and covers his eyes. Somehow you know he’s letting out a loud groan— probably because you’ve seen him do it so many times.
He looks your way, and at first you’re embarrassed to be caught, but then he grabs the notebook next to his bed and a giddy feeling returns to your chest.
She’s crazy
You take one look at it and let out a laugh. Normally you don’t condone woman bashing, but it’s Sohee, and she definitely is crazy.
Hate to say I told you so
He just rolls his eyes before flipping to his next sheet, looking at you hopefully.
Chem hw?
Already turned it in
He pouts, writing out a goodbye before clambering over his bed and to his school bag.
You just look down at the notes on your bed, clicking play on your Spotify as you transfer them to a new page.
A few minutes in and they’re quickly discarded, materials strewn across the comforter while you attempt a performance of Fancy by Twice in your vanity mirror.
It’s not very good, but it’s fun, and when the next song comes on you try again. This time you put on a bedazzled hat that you found in your closet, quickly turning into a one woman dance party, completely forgetting that yours and jungwons curtains are both open.
He looks up from his homework to ask you something about ions, but he leaves the sharpie hovering over his notebook, immediately letting out a giggle at what he’s seeing.
There’s laughter in his eyes as he watches you fondly for a few moments before turning back to his paper, deciding he’s done for the night.
When you finally finish your impromptu performance and collapse on your bed in exhaustion, there’s a note on Jungwons window and you have to squint to see the black writing because of the darkness outside.
Cute moves
Tumblr media
Not only did he compliment you, but the next morning you see the familiar meeting message on his window, meaning he told Sohee not to pick him up so he could walk with you.
You practically float down the stairs, the prospect of Jungwon finally realizing that Sohee wasn’t the one for him making all of the negative thoughts from the last few weeks disappear.
“Well you’re in a good mood this morning,” he giggles when you join him.
“I’m just glad we’re walking together again, I’ve missed you these last few days.”
He smiles, bumping your shoulder with his own, “I couldn’t leave my best friend hanging.”
You hide a bashful smile behind your hair.
“And I need your help with something.”
You look up at his glittering eyes, “what’s up?”
“Well, you know prom is coming up..”
Your eyes light up, and he giggles.
“So I guess it’s true then.”
“What’s true?”
“That girls get all excited and gushy over prom,” he says, with another bump to your shoulder.
“Well I don’t know about gushy, but yeah I’ve thought about it before…” you trail off, leaving out the fact that all of your prom daydreams included him.
“That’s great!!” He doesn’t offer any context on why it’s so great, just asks you another question. “What do you think is the perfect way to ask someone to prom?”
You can’t help the excitement from bubbling in your chest, you try to convince yourself that it’s a totally harmless question, but the lovesick voice in your head can’t help but scream “HE'S ASKING YOU.”
Because come on, why else would he be asking about your perfect promposal if not to use it to give you exactly what you want.
“Well, personally I think I’d like it kinda small. Like just someone with a sign outside my window or a casual ask while on a walk or something,” then quickly you add, “but I know a lot of other girls dream about a big public ask, ya know like at a football game or in front of the whole school.”
Jungwon nods, “that’s what I thought.”
There’s a beat of silence before he speaks again.
“Sohee is probably a big ask kind of girl, don’t you think?”
You feel as if you’ve been slapped, and you can’t help the way you recoil.
“Uh”
“I mean I don’t know if it’s weird asking you or not, I know you’re not her biggest fan but I figure you know girl stuff better than me.”
You tuck your head down, blinking back tears as you realize he was never interested in you.
“Yeah, she definitely would be.”
He notices the way your voice seems quieter.
“Hey you okay?”
“Yeah totally,” you’re approaching the school doors now, and you cover with a quick lie, “I just realized I totally forgot to study for this quiz in chem.”
Tumblr media
“We have a quiz?!”
Somehow, Jungwon took your embarrassed reluctance when it came to prom as excitement, as he enlisted you to help him write out a giant sign for Sohee.
(“Well you seemed so excited and I know how much you like making posters”)
So for the three hours between the end of school and the time you had to report for the football game, you sat on Jungwons floor and helped him.
Honestly, it was kind of nice. You got to sit there with someone you love, joking around and creating something.
In fact, if you forgot about what you were doing it almost felt like a date.
But then you would trace out Sohee’s name in two foot letters and remember that he didn’t want you.
“Okay, I’ve got to get ready for band… good luck tonight!”
You hug your best friend goodbye, your lips brushing his cheek on accident and leaving you blushing as you run out of his house.
A small part of you didn’t want the team to win, because maybe if everyone was upset about the loss, Jungwon would decide the moment wasn’t right to carry out his “epic promposal plan” (Yes he named it that himself).
But you tried to shake that thought out of your head, immediately feeling guilty when you remember how long Jungwon had been looking forward to this game.
“Go Tigers!!”
From where you stood playing in stands, you could just see the top of Sohee’s face. It would be a lie to say she looked anything less than perfect, her dark hair shined in the large lights and her kicks were flawless everytime the team scored.
And as much as you told Jungwon you hated football, you spent the entire last quarter on your feet, screaming your head off for your best friend and his teammates.
The other team was up by three with less than a minute on the clock, and you let out an inhuman noise when Jungwon catches a throw in the end zone, officially winning the game for your school.
You wish you could run down as soon as the buzzer sounds to give Jungwon a hug, but unfortunately you were stuck in the stands until the rest of the crowd dispersed.
It’s only when you see him with the rolled up paper that you remember your after school activities that day, and your eyes shoot back to the view of Sohee in front of you.
This time instead of tumbling or cheering, she’s standing still and— flirting with her ex boyfriend?
Your eyes go wide as saucers, mouth falling open as she playfully shoves Jake’s shoulder, giggling like a schoolgirl.
You wave your hands at Jungwon, trying to get his attention and call the plan off, but he either doesn’t see you or doesn’t care, continuing his path to the cheerleader.
As much as you hated them together, you couldn’t help but want to stop Jungwon from seeing her with Jake.
But all you can do is watch as he locks eyes on them, dropping the still rolled sign as he walks up.
“What the heck?”
Sohee turns to look at him, and she doesn’t even have the decency to look guilty, keeping her hand on Jake’s pec as she turns to look at the boy she’s been leading on for over a month.
“What?”
“I- I just thought-”
“Thought what?”
He doesn’t even respond, just turns around and walks away, stomping mud into the discarded sign as he does.
Tumblr media
“Won?” You tap on his back door, hoping he hadn’t locked himself up in his room.
He didn’t, and it only takes a moment before he’s swinging the door open.
“Hey.”
He doesn’t look as upset as you thought he would, and you feel a weight lifting off your chest at his lack of bloodshot eyes.
You pick up the sign he had left on the ground, and he glared at it.
“I don’t want it, I mean you did most of it so if you want to you can keep it but-”
You cut him off, “Jungwon I don’t want to keep it.”
“Then why?”
You beckon him out the door, leading him further onto his own deck.
You roll out a small piece of the paper, grabbing it securely at the top before ripping it with as much power as you can muster.
The confusion on his face has now changed to a smile, and his eyes glitter as you take the piece you tore off and rip it into even smaller pieces, depositing them into his fire pit.
“You try.”
He practically runs over, ripping a huge chunk off before layering it with another one and ripping both.
Before long he’s got the entire poster in his fire pit, and there’s a real smile on his face— one you haven’t seen in a while since he started bringing Sohee around. It only gets bigger when you grab a pack of matches from your purse.
After lighting the pile of promposal, you watch as he collapses into one of the chairs around the fire.
“You always know exactly how to make me feel better,” he laughs, “even if this does feel a little bit crazy.”
You shrug, owing the idea to your older sister, “it worked for Wonyoung, we burned all her ex boyfriends hoodies and she never cried over him again.”
Jungwon laughs, “you know, I actually didn’t cry at all.”
You sit next to him, propping your head up on your hand.
“Really?”
“Nope,” he shakes his head, “I don’t know why. Honestly I didn’t really feel sad, I just felt really embarrassed.”
“There’s nothing to be embarassed about, I doubt Jake thinks of you any differently, and really she should be the one embarassed. I can’t believe she used you like that.”
Jungwon nods, “yeah, Jake already texted me and told me he thought it was messed up. Apparently she used me to make him jealous, but when he found out he turned her down.”
You can’t help the satisfied smile from making its way onto your face, a small snort leaving your mouth.
“Guess she’s going to prom alone tomorrow.”
Jungwon looks up at you, “are you going?”
“No, I think I’m just going to stay home and study. I don’t really like most of the people at our school.”
He pouts, “but what about your perfect prom to go with your perfect high school experience?”
You shrug, “that was when I was younger Won, I think I’ve just realized it’s unrealistic.”
He looks like he wants to say something else, but at that exact moment Mrs.Yang yells out the window that it’s too cold and the two of you either need to come inside or postpone your talk until tomorrow.
You yell back immediately, promising to send her son back in.
“I need to get to bed anyway. Goodnight Won, I’m glad you’re not sad.”
He hugs you close, “goodnight love.”
You do not in fact, get to bed after that, because the nickname is all you can hear and think about everytime you close your eyes.
Coffee?
You’ve never felt so grateful to see Jungwon’s handwriting from across the way, and you send him a thumbs up before closing your curtains to get dressed.
The two of you spend most of the day in the cafe, talking and joking around just like old times, and you think that maybe this is enough.
Maybe Jungwon doesn’t have to love you back, he just has to love you the way he always has.
So that night when he holds up a notebook with “sure you don’t want to go?” on it, you smile.
Maybe next year
I’ll hold you to it
He grabs the jacket to his suit, and you close your curtains. If you leave them open you’ll never get anything done, you’ll be too busy waiting for him to come home.
Which would be no time soon, considering the dance didn’t end until eleven and it was barely after six.
You lasted about half an hour actually studying, before deciding to watch a movie to pass the time. It was some cheesy high school movie, and you hoped the cheesy prom scene would make you feel better.
You and Jungwon had watched this movie at one of your sleepovers, because you loved romance movies and he loved you so of course he watched it.
You pause.
Jungwon loved you— surely it was platonic, but he loved you.
You click pause on the remote, ripping your curtains back to see multiple papers taped up on Jungwons window.
I love you
⬆️ I wrote this last year and then buried it deep into one of my drawers, but I think it’s time to bring it out.
I never loved Sohee, not the way I love you. I think deep down I knew it was always you, and I’m sorry it took me so long to admit it.
I love you, and not in the best friend way.
You read it three times before your vision gets too blurry to make the letters out anymore.
“Mom! Do we still have Wonyoung’s old prom dresses?”
In five minutes your mother is in your room, multiple dresses in her arms.
“I knew you would change your mind, come here.”
Tumblr media
The party is in full swing when you arrive, and you see Jungwon standing out on the dance floor awkwardly next to Sunoo.
You can’t help the laugh that escapes your mouth, and as if he has yn senses, Jungwon’s head whips around.
His eyes find your immediately, and he starts cutting through the crowd of people towards you, a huge smile on his face.
Sohee cuts in for a moment, but Jungwon is tired of her getting in the way of you, and shoulders past her.
Neither one of you say anything when you finally stand in front of each other, but you open the small clutch your mother had sent with you.
He watches with fond eyes as you unfold a peice of paper.
I love you
And he kisses you right in the middle of the dance floor, just like every high school movie you’ve ever watched. Except it’s better, because it’s Jungwon.

Super by Lottiara
-note from mod sparkle, this is very very angsty and made me cry (read the tags before xx)
- Two of the city's superheroes fight villians and protect the city whilst keeping their true identities a secret. They cannot even know the names of each other, their faces disguised by their magical jewels. Dream is a flirty, cocky and impulsive hero with a sword and a smirk, never failing to cast witty and flirty remarks at his partner. GNotFound is clever and calculated, and can’t stand being near the flirty masked hero. Exams, friend groups, crushes, fights and prom should be their main stressors. But George and Clay barely have time to sleep, let alone focus on anything else. None of that stops George from crushing hard on his classmate, but Clay’s heart seems to be somewhere else. Perhaps with a certain masked hero he secretly spends nearly every day with. Neither can escape the responsibilities on their shoulders, and they can’t tell anyone their problems. The only person that could possibly understand what they are going through, is each other. But they don’t even know who that is. Which is Super inconvenient.

“Don’t you get it?” Dream said to him in an excited whisper, eyes alight with joyous realization. “You—you’re magical, George!” “What does that mean?” “It means you’re like me!” When George first met the tall, freckled child who called himself Dream, he thought the other boy was bonkers. Strange clothes, a foreign accent, a closely-guarded secret — what was George supposed to make of his new next-door neighbor? Despite the newcomer’s strangeness, the two boys quickly forge a friendship. George soon realizes that he and Dream have a lot more in common than he first thought. //Dreamnotfound Hogwarts AU//

He had the awkward tenderness of someone who has never been loved and is forced to improvise.
When George is finally able to visit Dream in Florida, they start to face a lot more complications than they'd anticipated.

-I LOVE THIS FIC SO MUCH, WILL ALWAYS RECOMMEND (but defo read the tags cuz it gets angsty xx)
The unexpected of parenting meets the uncertainty of love. Dream has to learn how to balance building a relationship from the ground up and his kids as he faces a new school year, new coworkers, and new drama. why did you ask me out (2)
Tumblr media
1 / chapter 2 - just how it used to be / 3 / 4 / 5
5.1K words
warnings - speedrun enemies to friends to lovers trope
summary - You and Chrissy are long-lost best friends that join sides to pull one over on the girls hoping to make you prom queen as a bet. Things don't always go to plan - sometimes you realize you're in love and sometimes the girls shoot back at you.
~~
1977. Third Grade.
“I’m sorry nobody came,” Chrissy’s pouting, but you know her and you know she’s being nothing but genuine, “They’re all missing out.”
You shrug and remove the party hat from around your head, “I don’t really care.”
“How can you not care?” she gapes at you now.
“I have you,” you grin when she giggles, “I don’t need anybody else here when my best friend comes.”
“I’ll always come,” she takes your hand and squeezes, “Besides we get the cake to ourselves, right?”
“Duh!” you hop off the chair and Chrissy chases after you as you run into the kitchen.
Your present, the hottest toy of ‘73 - a Baby Alive, was abandoned on the dining table in favor of the Jell-O poke cake your mother so kindly spent the entire morning making. You didn’t have much preference between that and something else, but you knew it was popular and you knew Chrissy had been dying to try some.
It didn’t matter that your entire class flaked at your birthday party because she came, and that was always more than enough. Now there was nobody to impress or host - just you and Chrissy and not waiting thirty minutes between eating cake and jumping into your family’s pool.
1986. Senior Year.
You’re in the middle of a changing room - stuffed into a dress you hate and flanked at both sides with girls that hate you in each neighboring stall. The only reason you’re here is her. Chrissy Cunningham.
You poke your head out of the curtain and spot the blond staring at the floor, a pink dress hanging off her arm.
“Hey, you,” she grins when you call, and you hate the way your heart lights up. You nudge your head back, “wanna help me outta this sucker?”
“You know it,” Chrissy’s more careful in keeping the curtain from exposing you as she gets in than you’ve ever seen her before.
She hangs up her dress and you turn, eyes falling on the mirror and you make a point to look at the floor. You feel her soft, nimble fingers as they fly to your zipper.
“Found one you liked yet?”
“Not really.”
To say you didn’t expect to be here is the understatement of your lifetime. If it weren’t for the bet, you’re sure Chrissy never would’ve approached you again.
But here you were. Chrissy’s careful hands help you slide down yet another rejected prom dress as Pat Benatar’s Love Is A Battlefield echoes through the store. The dress eventually pools at your feet and Chrissy picks out the last one in your lineup. A more ball gown type of dress that requires lacing in the back, one you only picked when Chrissy said you’d look like a princess in it.
“Why did you ask me out?” you’re quieter than you wanted to be, you sound afraid and it makes your stomach coil in disgust, “If you were just gonna tell me it was a bet, anyway, why’d you even ask?”
“Just thought you’d like to go to prom with us,” she grins and you can’t even tell that it twitches downward for a moment, “I wanted to hang out with you again. I miss you.”
“Really?” you can’t help the laugh that bubbles from you.
Her fingers work quickly at lacing the back, “Of course.”
You find that hard to believe, but Chrissy is so willing to give you tender attention so you take it. You’re not surprised that she and her friends would spark this bet about you - that dreadful rumor that floated around Hawkins about you most likely helped. But it was one that you’d thought would put her off.
But Chrissy’s always been especially charitable. She’s sweet and you can’t bring yourself to hate her no matter how many nights you spent alone because of her. And Chrissy isn’t lying, not for a second. You’ve always been her person. The one she ran to in tears, happy or sad, the first person to hear any news, the first person she’d approach at a party (on the off chance you two didn’t just arrive together).
But you two are not friends anymore. And if you remember correctly - and you absolutely do - Chrissy left you during that summer of ‘82. And Chrissy’s friends are the ones that like to torment you and your friends. And Chrissy’s friends are the ones calling you all freaks, throwing food and drinks, scribbling on your lockers, stepping on your things - the list goes on and on.
You have no idea what possessed Chrissy to even tell you about the bet and you’re honestly too afraid to ask. Because you know her, and you know that the second she says her sickly sweet “I really did just miss you”, you’ll never leave her side.
“It hurt, you know,” her fingers pause and she looks at the mirror to see you staring at her, “I’m not gonna sit here and lie, Chris, it really fucking hurt.”
“Well,” her voice shakes as she finishes tying the lace, “that’s why we’re here, right? Make amends and such?”
“No, you’re not listening,” you huff and turn to face her, “This isn’t just gonna disappear because we get drunk at prom together.”
“We’re not getting drunk,” Chrissy’s eyes widen - scandalized.
“Jesus,” you shake your head, “I’m saying this point blank, Chris, just because you’re taking me to prom, doesn’t mean I forgive you.”
“Well, you don’t have to forgive me, but just- can’t we try?” you hate the way she squirms and you hate knowing it’s because of you. No matter what you do, there’s no way you can shake the love for her that lies in your heart, “Why can’t we just be like we used to?”
1978. Fourth Grade.
“So,” Chrissy’s laying back on your bed, hair fanning out on your bedspread, “what’d you wanna show me?”
You’re standing at your stereo system - something your parents only got you under the promise you wouldn’t ask for anything expensive for the next four birthdays. You’re facing Chrissy and you tap your fingers against the smooth wood. Voice level as you speak, “Moving fast, down 95. Hit top speed, but I'm still moving much too slow. I feel so good, I'm so alive. Hear my song playin' on the radio.”
Chrissy sits up at that, brows furrowed and head tilting, “Huh?”
As if she would somehow know what the hell you were talking about, you simply continue, “It goes: Get up! Everybody's gonna move their feet. Get down. Everybody's gonna leave their seat,” you give the blond a pointed look and knock quietly on the wood, “You gotta lose your life in Detroit Rock City.”
“Still no clue what you’re saying,” she shakes her head.
“Detroit Rock City,” you turn to hit play and a repetitive riff (that 9-year-old you would die for) comes through your speakers, “as in the ‘76 album Destroyer as in KISS.”
“Oh my God,” Chrissy throws her head back but she’s really just trying to hide her smile, “You’re really into this, aren’t you?”
It isn’t mocking - not at all. Simply inquisitive.
“Hell yeah,” you’re practically vibrating in excitement and you lean forward to rest your hands on the mattress, “‘m gonna get big like this one day, Chris. Just you watch - I’ll be kickin’ it with Cherie Currie and Joan Jett on big stages in bigger cities and Hawkins will be a stain on the map of places I play.”
“With The Runaways?” Chrissy fixes her head to look at you and just now, she realizes how close you really are, “Dream on. You’d be buggin’ the whole time.”
“Nah, I’d be chill. They’d love me.”
“I’m sure,” Chrissy rolls her eyes just to tease. You notice her foot tapping to the beat and she leans somehow closer to you - almost nose to nose, “Don’t you think this music is kind of intense?”
“That’s KISS, bitch,” you jab a finger to her shoulder and flick the volume of the stereo higher. Your head bobs to the rhythm and Chrissy’s eyes widen.
“You swear in your house?”
“When I’m alone,” you shrug and move towards your bed, a pep in your step as the voice of Paul Stanley breaks through your speakers, “or with you.”
You and Chrissy both lay back on your bed, your head still bounces to the song and Chrissy can’t help but beam at the sight.
You’ve always had a connection to music - different than the one she does. She likes to dance and she likes to listen, but you seem to come alive at the gruff voices and loud instruments. She thinks it’s cute, the way you’re so enthusiastic about rock, even if it isn’t her taste. Well, she likes Blondie and The Runaways - but only a few songs.
You don’t judge though, just ribs and jabs, but that’s normal of you two.
“Next we can put on Heart Of Glass,” you turn your head and Chrissy copies, “You still like that song, right?”
You know she does, but her heart swells at how you ask - just to be sure. She nods and you sit up as KISS comes to a close. It feels like barely a second passes before drums open up to a soft “once I had a love and it was a gas”.
Chrissy called you a dreamer about your rock dreams, but she believed in you wholeheartedly. Your most recent expensive birthday present had taken the form of a bass guitar; the calluses and shallow indents along your fingers were evidence enough that you’d been faithful in practicing.
Hawkins will be a stain on the map of places I play, you said. Chrissy knew that would be true, but she didn’t want you to go to bigger places and do bigger things without her.
“You’ll take me, right?”
You whirl around at that, “Huh?”
“When you’re on the road and playing in big cities,” she sits up on her knees, “you’ll take me, right?”
Chrissy relishes in the way you smile, “Duh, no way I’d go without you,” you sit on your knees as well, “Every band needs groupies.”
“I wouldn’t be a groupie!” Chrissy laughs, shoving your shoulder, “I’d already know you, so it’s totally different.”
“Whatever you say, groupie.”
That earns you another (rather light)  shove.
1986. Senior Year.
“‘Why can’t we- '" you don’t even get out the whole quote before you’re laughing, “You’re kidding. You know why.”
“I don’t,” Chrissy crosses her arms, growing increasingly frustrated as you fight her on this, “I thought you didn’t care about cliques and social groups.”
“I don’t!” you’re certain the cheerleaders on either side of you heard that, but you’re not in the right mind to give a shit right now, “Your friends do though, and we’re in completely different legs of the hierarchy. Not to mention, which one of us stood by while a life crumbling rumor was spread about them?”
“And I’m sorry,” Chrissy looks away, desperation scrawling up her throat, “but nobody’s even talking about it now, it all blew over, right?”
“That doesn’t change the fact that it happened, Cunningham.”
“C’mon, don’t- “ Chrissy wets her lips, her voice breaks and you can tell she’s about to cry. Guilt gnaws at your conscience but you’re too deep into the fight to backtrack, “Don’t call me that. I thought we were doing well,” she bites her bottom lip, her voice is hoarse and her question is nearly a whisper, “Why can’t things just go back to how they used to be?”
“Because- ! I know that in your head everyone just loves everyone and we’re all capable of being friends, but that’s so far from the truth that you might as well be in the Mariana Trench of delusion right now. Whether you wanna look it in the face or not, there is such a huge fucking difference between you and the average student in Hawkins, and there is an even bigger difference between you and me.”
So maybe you’re a little bitter.
Your hands rub over your face to ease the ache you feel behind your eyes, “You want us to be kids again because it was so fucking easy for us before I was living in a trailer and had my own opinions! Before you started dating Jason and before…” you swallow and look away, “before that stupid fucking rumor.”
You’d never say it, but part of you thinks that Chrissy said something to spark that rumor. Not directly. She’s just a bit of a blabbermouth sometimes.
“I want us to be kids again so that I can do right by you,” Chrissy takes a hesitant approach to holding your hand and eventually decides not to, “I don’t want you to turn out any different than you are now, I just wish I could go back and redo everything I did wrong.”
“Then why’d you do it in the first place?” your eyes start to spring with tears. You waited at that lunch table with Gareth and Jeff and Grant and Eddie. You told them you had a friend coming. You waited after school by the bus bay. You waited in the seat that afternoon and the next morning.
You waited for five weeks before you accepted she wasn’t coming.
Chrissy’s collapsing from the inside, her heart feels like it's being strangled and all she wants is for you to pry the clutching hands away. But the clutching hands are yours and she deserves this.
“My mom,” you sigh but you know it’s an honest answer, “she didn’t want us hanging out after you moved. I didn’t really know why at the time, but I- I know now.”
“Your mom always hated me.”
“She did,” Chrissy nods slowly, grimacing, “I never did, though.”
“No?”
“No.”
“Could’ve fooled me.”
“I’m sorry,” her voice snaps completely and she sniffles, wiping away the tears already decorating the skin beneath her eye, “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have left and I shouldn’t have just stood by. I miss you,” she looks at you and you feel yourself cave under her teary eyes, “I just want you back. I don’t even care about prom, I just want you back.”
Chrissy’s always been prone to tears, but you’ve always been prone to drying those tears. Maybe she said something like that to Lola Carter and that’s why she started the rumor.
You always had such a soft heart when it came to Chrissy. Malleable and dough-like.
She was probably trying to reason out why you weren’t such a bad person to the cruelest of Hawkins’ students and it ended up biting her in the ass.
Lola Carter most likely heard Chrissy say something like “She’s always protected me, she doesn’t deserve to be treated like that, you guys.” because that’s just the sweet person Chrissy is - and that’s why Lola spread that stupid fucking rumor.
1978. Fifth Grade.
The winter dance is something you hate and love. You hate most of the kids at your school and their obnoxious behaviors that suddenly ramp up to the max at a dance. You love watching those kids make asses of themselves. You hate the aftertaste of the punch. You love some of the decor (most of it was still tacky, though). You hate getting your feet stepped on. You love the hours leading up to the dance, where it’s just you and Chrissy and music as you get ready. You hate that Chrissy has been swept up and away from you for most of the night.
You hate that the most.
You’re not particularly clingy, but seeing her dance with other people tonight just makes something inside you ugly. You don’t like that ugliness. You try to swallow it but it’s always climbing up your throat when a new boy approaches and she grants them the pleasure of dancing with her.
The fastest runners, the quickest at math, the least stuttery readers, the fit-throwers in gym - they all wanted a dance with her.
So yes, you’re jealous, but it’s not because you want to be Chrissy. And yes, you’re upset, but it’s only really because you know Chrissy’s not confrontational enough to tell them no.
At one point, in the middle of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John’s You’re The One That I Want, Chrissy’s stone blue eyes finally meet your gaze. She rolls her eyes and mocks a gun to her head over Chase Vabin’s shoulder as they dance; she mouths a quick ‘putz’ as she looks at Chase’s side profile, just to truly emphasize her misery. You finally crack a smile and shake your head.
Just as the song reaches its climax, Chrissy steps back politely and spews a reason that you both know is bullshit. Chase takes it, though, and moves on quickly to Lisa Hughes.
Chrissy’s short heels clack against the gymnasium floor when she runs for you, taking your hand and pulling you into the bathroom. It’s empty and as soon as she’s sure of that, she lets out a huff.
“I hate these things,” she grumbles but soon finds her fingers plucking at the sash tied around your waist, “Nice threads.”
“You saw them earlier,” you laugh, batting her hand away.
Dusty Springfield’s voice comes over the speakers and while it’s echoey and dampened, you can still hear You Don't Have To Say You Love Me through the thick bathroom door.
“My mom says Dusty’s no good,” Chrissy mocks a Southern accent as she says it.
You grab her hands and pull her closer, “Your mom’s insane.”
She barely gets to whine out a “Hey!” before you’re tugging her along to sway with you to the tempo of Dusty Springfield.
“Closet disco queens,” Chrissy mutters.
“‘s not disco,” you chuckle.
“Could be, if we just pretended it was.”
“I’m not a good pretender.”
“Well, I am.”
“So, show me,” she looks at you incredulously and you break away from the dance, throwing out your hands dramatically, “C’mon, dancing queen,” you kick your mary janes against her wedges, “young and sweet. Seventeen.”
“I’m not seventeen,” she crosses her arms.
“I thought you could pretend.”
“It’s so embarrassing to just…” Chrissy tosses her head back but she’s smiling the entire time, “It’s embarrassing.”
“Don’t be embarrassed, I’ll cheer for ya,” you watch her raise a brow at you and you nod securely, “Come on, Chris, show me what you got.”
So she does. Hesitantly at first, but the more you root her on the more sincere her moves become. More bold. More empowered. Chrissy’s always loved to dance and she’s always loved that you never wavered in supporting her.
When you’re older and you’re looking back on this memory, you’ll realize you fell in love with Chrissy Cunningham that night. Under the yellowish lights of the bathroom and in front of cracked, water-spotted mirrors, you fell in love with your best friend.
1986. Senior Year.
That stupid fucking rumor. That you were gay.
What made it worse? There was some truth to it, but you could never admit that.
You always had a soft heart for Chrissy, and Chrissy always had a problem where if her mother told her to jump she’d only ask “how high?” and you could barely fault her for that.
It’s hard to watch her in tears now and it’s hard to admit you’re still in love with her and it’s hard to not take her face in your hands and brush away every drop of her wrenching heart.
1979. Sixth Grade.
“Three minutes left,” you stretch your back until there’s a satisfying pop and you giggle when Chrissy cringes at the sound.
“It sort of sucks,” Chrissy sighs, throwing her head back against the couch.
ABC’s Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve is playing before you two on the TV and there’s a party popper in both your hands. Your parents left for a party an hour ago and Chrissy’s mom was asleep by ten.
“What does? The music?”
“No,” she purses her lips, “We’re eleven and haven’t had a single New Year’s kiss yet.”
“So?” you shake your head, toying with the string of your popper, “It’s not like we’re teenagers yet.”
“Still, though. Johnny and Ruby are going steady and get to have a kiss every year.”
“They break up all the time,” you cross your legs under you and turn to face Chrissy, “Ruby was holding hands with Mikey during recess on Friday.”
“What?!”
“Yeah,” you lean forward, an elbow on each knee and your chin resting on your hands, “New Year’s kisses are dumb anyway. Why would you wanna open the year without being able to breathe?”
“It’s like a grand gesture,” ever the romantic, Chrissy bunches the material of her sweater right above her heart, “opening the year with love, it’s sweet!” suddenly, the pout is back on her face, “I wish I had one.”
Neither of you are paying attention, but the TV broadcast turns to the ball drop in New York. A minute left of 1979 until the brand new decade rolls in.
“Well, you’ll get one eventually,” you wave off, “You’re pretty. Who wouldn’t wanna kiss you?”
“Why don’t we be each other’s New Year’s kiss?”
“Stop joking.”
“I’m serious!” she huffs, “Why not?” when you think of no reason, she throws out her arms, “So- !”
“Fine,” you shake your head and sit up straight - you don’t realize it yet, but the swimming feeling in your gut is called butterflies and you’ll soon discover they always pop up around Chrissy.
Dick Clark and all of New York and all of the world count back from ten, ready and welcoming to 1980. You stare at Chrissy and she stares right back, waiting with furrowed brows and uneasy breaths for that cheer of ‘one!’ to finally end the awkward silence.
But it’s never truly awkward with Chrissy, is it?
Finally, the cheer comes and your noses hurt when they crash together.
It was a mere peck. Just a moment. But you weirdly want the moment replayed as soon as you two break apart.
Chrissy grins and pulls the string on her party popper, “See? Fun!”
You laugh and pull the string on your popper, “Yeah, super fun.”
You hope it’s just you two next New Year’s too, and unbeknownst to you - Chrissy is hoping the exact same thing.
1986. Senior Year.
“Do you really wanna be friends again?” you whisper into the quiet changing stall.
“More than anything,” Chrissy hiccups.
You don’t, though. You want a little more affection. A little more freedom. A little more of her attention. But friendship is the closest you’ll come, so you decide to settle before the market busts.
“Alright,” you turn back around to face the mirror, “I’ll forget and forgive, Chris.”
“Oh my God,” she loops her arms around your neck and squeezes, you can feel the imprint of her upturned lips against your shoulder, “thank you, thank you, thank you!”
“Yeah, yeah,” you elbow her jokingly, “stop strangling me ‘n’ tell me what you think of the dress.”
“You look like a princess,” she nods definitively, “just like I said.”
“I like it, too.”
It’s dark. Wine purple and fluffy at the skirt. You like it a lot, actually.
“Then let’s go,” Chrissy leans in, chin resting on your shoulder and she wiggles her eyebrows in the reflection, “Dad’s paying.”
You didn’t like to seem arrogant or overly prideful, but the way the cheerleaders’ jaws drop at the dress hanging off your arm has your chest puffing out just a little more.
Stacey Bennet, a girl you recognize vaguely from Eddie’s deals, reaches out to brush her fingers over the material, “Where’d you find that?”
She was one of the nice popular kids - nothing like Chrissy, but she never made your life hell. Her and Grant went out for milkshakes once in freshman year, but you suspect she just felt bad that her friends made fun of him. It was an appreciated gesture, though.
“No clue,” you shrug, following after the group as they begin towards the next store, “Chris found it.”
1980. Seventh Grade.
“It’s not that different,” you insist.
“Everything’s changed,” Chrissy grumbles, nervously unfolding her class schedule, “Now we have different classes and periods and lunch times - what if we don’t even get to see each other?”
“Don’t be a bunny,” you knock your sneakers into hers, the two of you huddle into a corner of the hall before first period, “We’ll see each other.”
“But what if?” her bottom lip tucks out and you roll your eyes, taking her schedule to compare it to yours.
“See? We got, like, four classes together. And lunch. We’ll see each other all the time.”
“But I’m gonna miss you so much,” she huffs, less for dramatics and now you can sense the insecurity building behind her skin, “What if you find a new best friend?”
“Oh, yeah, I’m stoked to make best friends with,” you look up and point to a few kids, “everyone that just learned how to stop drooling when they talk to a girl and everyone who hates girls. Honestly, Chris,” you hand back the paper and bump your shoulder with hers, “you’ve gotta chill. Do I look like a flat leaver to you?”
“No,” she relents, carefully folding the paper back up, “I’m just so nervous, everything is so new.”
“You’ll be fine, sunshine,” you tease, “Just smile and wave ‘n’ if anybody gives you trouble, I’ll give them a shiner.”
“No, you won’t,” she counters, “You’ve gone soft.”
“Have not, I just like you,” you don’t pay much attention to the way she blushes before the bell is ringing. You pat Chrissy on the shoulder and wish for nothing more than to keep your hand there, “Do me a solid and don’t lose your head, okay?”
“Yeah, okay,” she nods, anxiously fiddling with her fingers, “Can you walk me to my first class?”
You have just as much a clue to where that is as she does, but that doesn’t mean you say no.
1986. Senior Year.
You’ve never been to the makeup aisles or stores for yourself, your mother wasn’t much one for makeup and by the time you were beginning to show interest - your family’s money was cutting tight. So, it’s more than safe to say you have no idea what to do among the lipsticks and eyeshadows. You’re just following Chrissy around and she’s more than content to entertain you.
She’s using your exposed arm to apply shades to and you just like the way her brows furrow as she judges the shades.
A long while ago, you and Chrissy would do this. Exactly this. And to be here again is almost disorienting.
Chrissy’s iconic eyeshadow wasn’t always blue. It used to be purple. And before that it was pink. And for a week it was solid red - until she realized how much it looked like she had an infection and promptly took it off during lunch.
And you can’t help but chuckle when you see her eyeing an apple red shade, her attention flies to you and she laughs, “I’ll go lighter this time - promise!”
“Yeah?” you step closer to the palette she’s looking at, eyes sinking to the price tag, “Should’ve gotten a green dress - just to match.”
“Shut up,” she’s grinning though. Big and bright.
You missed this, too. You missed her.
The other cheerleaders had fled to different corners of the store and it feels like it’s just how it used to be. You and Chrissy. Best friends forever.
Just best friends.
Only best friends.
1982. Eighth Grade.
You went on a single date in your entire middle school career and it was this - dinner with Gareth in March during spring break.
It was friendly and warm and you had fun, but that’s all it was. It felt like you two were hanging out - not on a date, and that was your doing. You refused every romantic gesture and you kept the discussion casual and you don’t even know why you agreed to go out with him.
Next to Chrissy, Gareth was your oldest friend (of only a year, give or take - not that it’s very important). You two were consistently told you should date, you suppose that’s why you said yes. That’s probably why he even asked.
The bright fluorescents of the diner light up your backs as you two sit on the curb, waiting for his mother to pick you both up. It’s a cold night and you brought your own jacket so Gareth wouldn’t have to drape his over your shoulders.
It’s quiet.
He smells like smoke and if you didn’t know him, you’d assume the worst, but you do know him and you know it’s from his dad.
You know so many little things like that about him. How he prefers soft serve ice cream because it’s easier on his teeth. How he hates milk because of the way it smells. How he always buys his clothes three sizes too big because he hates when they hug his body. How the word “turbo” makes his skin crawl. How he plays country music when he studies because it’s easier to tune out than music he actually likes. You know many things about him, but there’s nothing there.
A car passes and you perk up, but it’s red and Gareth’s Mom’s car is black. So you return to slouching as Gareth picks at loose threads at the bottom of his zipper.
He’s cute, you know that, but he’s not cute, cute.
“I don’t like you,” you blurt, “Romantically.”
“Yeah,” he nods and shoves his hands into his jacket pockets, “I know.”
There’s nobody else around. You close your eyes and sigh, “I think I like girls.”
Gareth is quiet and for a moment you regret your confession. But then he shrugs, head hanging down so he stares at his shoes, “I get it. Girls are dope.”
That makes you smile, and it’s all Gareth can ask for right now.
“Cunningham?”
“Yeah.”
He laughs and you decide that’s a good thing.
Gareth doesn’t ask how you feel about boys - it’s none of his business and he doesn’t really care. Yes, he has a small crush on you, but it’ll fade and he’ll cheer you on when you get a girlfriend or boyfriend or whoever the hell you end up with. It’s probably better you two cut off any romance now, while Gareth still likes Kimmy Miles and before he could fall too deep for you.
Gareth would go on to get a girlfriend (Kimmy Miles, ironically enough) at the same time Jeff did and the two would become best friends. You didn’t mind because you were quickly taken under Eddie’s wing - and it was only helped when you moved into his trailer park.
You’d go on to still daydream about Chrissy Cunningham.

100 of my favorite non hip hop releases from 2022. I made a seperate list for hip hop already which you can find here if you’re interested. 2022 will go down as a memorable year for me not just for the sheer quantity of great releases, but also because i feel that all my of my favorite genres had a chance to shine. I started returning to my hardcore/punk/metal roots within the last couple years and 2022 was the first time in recent memory where I really felt like I was fully tapped in. There were so many highly anticipated releases from a ton of different artists last year, and the majority lived up to the hype for me. Grindcore, Mathcore, and Post-Hardcore seems to have been making a huge comeback with some incredible new efforts from modern genre staples like Wormrot, Callous Daoboys, Brutus, Greyhaven, Birds in row, Knoll, and Cloud Rat. Not to mention the much welcome return of some legendary acts including Gospel, Sawtooth Grin, and City of Caterpillar. I’m sure there’s plenty of stuff I missed out on too, so feel free to hit me with any recommendations you might have or just let me know what projects you enjoyed the most last year. Oh and you can also click the titles of any of these albums and it’ll take you to the bandcamp or spotify page where you can check them out if you’d like. Peace. Chart with album titles 1. BACKSTORY
TW:  child  neglect,  familial  loss,  mentions  of  mental  health
the  eldest  by  a  handful  of  months,  weston  grew  up  trying  to  be  everything  his  little  siblings  needed.  their  parents  are  twisted  but  he  would  learn  to  see  them1  through  rose-colored  glasses  instead  of  living  in  pain.  when  his  siblings  fell,  he  felt  it,  too,  &  when  they  cried,  weston  was  the  shoulder  to  lean  on.  it’s  too  much  responsibility.  his  parents  fed  and  clothed  them,  but  he  held  their  mental  health  in  his  hands  and  the  truth  is  he  was  no  better.  weston  just  got  so  good  at  hiding  behind  this  mask  that  he  couldn’t  seem  to  tell  the  difference  between  himself  &  party  favor  anymore,  and  the  fact  of  the  matter  is  that  while  weston  was  quiet  and  just  so  different  in  a  way  that  his  parents  feared  he  would  be,  he  blended  in  like  a  chameleon.
he  was  class  president  &  prom  royal.  that’s  the  way  it’s  always  been.  but  all  the  academic  strivings  and  kodak  ready  smiles  in  the  world  can’t  hide  the  fact  that  weston  was  no  better.  the  older  he  got,  the  more  they  could  see.  his  grandmother,  first.  then  his  little  brother’s  best  friend.  his  first  love.  everything  he  tried  to  hide  sits  in  his  lap  &  wes  tried  to  wrestle  it  into  submission  and  but  sometimes  it  won.  they  know  him  but  he  doesn’t.  his  eyes  flashed  golden  sometimes  when  he’s  mad  enough  that  he  remembers  that  he’s  the  one  who  put  the  burn  stains  on  the  wood  floors  of  his  family’s  old  home,  but  he’s  more  human  than  anyone  can  ever  even  imagine.
he  was  angry  in  a  way  they  couldn’t  be.  he  liked  classical  music  at  prolific  volumes  and  he  liked  driving  his  car  too  fast  and  wes  liked  making  people  regret  believing  in  him.  his  mother  scoffs.  says  he’s  just  like  his  grandmother  who  she  moved  countries  to  get  away  from,  who  drank  vodka  like  orange  juice,  who  never  could  stand  the  way  her  daughter  liked  to  lie  to  herself.  his  father  glances  away.  asks  weston  to  please  turn  that  down,  or  please  show  your  ‘  friend  ‘  out,  or  to  please  stop  ruining  dinner.  when  he’s  home  alone  again  at  age  eighteen  wes  makes  them  regret  treating  him  like  this.  and  when  he’s  nineteen  when  they  leave  the  keys  to  the  porsche  in  his  eyesight.  and  when  he’s  twenty-one  and  him  and  jaime  can’t  even  make  it  up  the  steps  to  the  front  door  because  you’re  so  wasted  new  years  eve.  wes  can  be  angry  and  vicious  and  that  made  him  really  fucking  happy  in  a  way  that  nothing  else  does.
but,  when  his  father  passes,  reality  grips  wes  with  a  frightening  stillness.  while  his  siblings  are  inducted  into  the  family  business  and  take  the  helm  of  the  restaurant,  wes  packed  his  life  away  into  cardboard  boxes  and  leaves  washington  for  the  first  time  in  his  life.  his  first  taste  of  true  freedom.  freedom,  as  it  turned  out,  felt  an  awful  lot  like  being  confined  as  well,  as  weston  shackled  himself  to  shitty  jobs  to  keep  a  steady  flow  of  money  coming  in,  living  in  leaky  flats  with  shitty  roommates  and  eating  a  lot  of  humble  pie  as  he  figured  himself  out.  eventually,  he  finds  his  own  current  and  instead  of  cleaning  dishes,  he  prods  the  idea  that  had  always  lingered  in  the  back  of  his  mind:  culinary  school.  he’d  never  been  the  best  cook,  jaime  had  bested  him  at  that,  but  it  was  something  weston  could  apply  himself  to,  so  he  latched  on.
for  the  first  time  in  many,  many  years,  weston  allows  himself  to  follow  through  and  with  this  new  career  set  into  motion,  he  took  the  plunge  and  quit  his  day-job  the  moment  that  first  soux  chef  check  landed  in  his  palms.  he  spends  the  next  few  years  embracing  this  one  true  freedom  —  falling  in  love  with  girl  who  he  didn’t  deserve  once,  twice,  maybe  three  times,  studying  things  that  truly  enthralled  him,  and  establishing  himself  in  the  culinary  field.  swiftly  rising  from  soux  to  executive  chef,  his  name  becoming  synonymous  with  splashy  ‘chefs  to  watch  for’  writeups  and  running  a  world  class  line  staff.  though,  weston  stills  for  just  a  moment  long  enough  for  life  to  pass  him  by  at  a  frightening  pace.  within  the  span  of  a  few  months  he  was  awarded  the  james  beard  foundation  award  and  in  the  same  span,  lost  his  younger  and  only  brother,  jaime.  as  it  turns  out,  old  habits  thought  to  be  deaded  a  decade  ago  have  an  odd  habit  of  rearing  their  heads  when  least  needed  and  so  the  cycle  reinvents  itself  and  lurches  onward.
and  it’s  like  being  guilty  for  a  crime  he  hadn’t  committed  because  while  weston  was  innocent  in  the  larger  scheme  of  things,  he  cannot  help  but  to  think  that  it  should  have  been  him.  if  anyone  could  bare  the  weight  of  the  world,  let  alone  keep  the  family  business  afloat,  it  could  have  been  weston.  not  jaime.  jaime  should  have  been  the  one  living  his  life,  and  instead  he  took  his  father’s  place  while  wes  indulged  in  god  knows  who  or  what  for  the  past  decade.  for  now,  weston  is  back  in  town,  picking  up  where  jaime  left  off:  cooking  up  good  food,  repaying  back  a  debt  he  didn’t  take  out,  and  trying  his  very  best  not  to  think  of  all  the  unpleasant  things.
HEADCANONS
renamed  barnie’s  ( the  family  restaurant )  after  jamie’s  birthday  on  06/01/83
slipped  back  into  binge  drinking  after  his  brother  passed
still  attends  his  AA  meetings,  though  he  has  yet  to  fess  up  to  not  being  sober;  mostly  just  attends  for  emotional  validation  at  this  point.
while  they  weren’t  born  at  the  same  time,  wes  and  jaime  were  oft  called  the  “ abbott  twins ”  growing  up  on  account  of  how  closely  they  stuck  to  one  another.
currently  receiving  a  bit  of  pushback  following  the  recent  conversion  of  barnies  into  six  oh  one  but  there  still  hope  of  getting  both  kitchen  staff  and  previous  regulars  of  the  restaurant  on  board  with  the  change.
owns  thousand  dollar  chef  knives  but  has  no  curtains  in  his  apartment.
